Nothing to Do With Islam

QuranRifle3The war against jihadism has been chronically misunderstood because of our failure to acknowledge the religious motives of Muslim jihadists. This failure began in 1979 with the Iranian revolution. Trapped in our Western secularist paradigms, we interpreted the uprising against the Shah as an anti-colonial revolt against a “brutal” autocrat propped up by the West for its own exploitative economic and geostrategic purposes. The aim of the revolution, the argument went, was to create a government more sympathetic to national sovereignty and Western pluralistic government. However, it soon became clear with the political triumph of the Ayatollah Khomeini that the revolution was in the main a religious one, inspired in part by anger at the Shah’s secularization, modernization, and liberalization policies. As Khomeini said in 1962, the Shah’s regime was “fundamentally opposed to Islam itself and the existence of a religious class.”

Despite that lesson, the rise of al Qaeda in the 90s was also explained as anything and everything other than what it was and still is–– a movement with deep religious roots. Under administrations of both parties, the mantra of our leaders has been “nothing to do with Islam.” We created various euphemisms like “Islamism,” “Radical Islam,” “Islamic extremists,” or “Islamofascism,” to explain an ideology that is firmly rooted in traditional Islamic theology and historical practice. We were anxiously assured that Islam was a “religion of peace,” its adherents tolerant and ecumenical. Popular figures like Osama bin Laden were “heretics” who had “highjacked” this wonderful faith, distorting its doctrines to serve their evil lust for power. We looked upon them as “beards from the fringe,” malignant cranks like Jim Jones, Charles Manson, or David Koresh.

This fundamental error continues today, as Muslim violence and anti-Semitism are explained by every factor instead of the essential one––the theology, jurisprudence, and history of Islam.

When one asks for evidence for this detachment of Muslim violence from the tenets of Islam, the best most apologists can do is produce a Westernized nominal Muslim, a propagandist like Tariq Ramadan, or a left-wing academic who reflexively considers any enemy of the colonialist, imperialist, capitalist West to be a friend of the left. Jihad is not, they assure us, the theological imperative to “fight all men until they say there is no god but Allah,” as Mohammed himself commanded. Jihad is merely a form of self-improvement and community service. “Allahu Akbar” is not the traditional Muslim battle cry, but merely a way of saying “Thank God.” Revered Muslim scholars like the Ayatollah Khomeini––educated in Qom, the “Oxford and Harvard of Iranian Shi’ism,” as Barry Rubin put it, and honored as a “grand sign of Allah” for his theological knowledge––was simply wrong when he said, “Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you,” and “Islam is a religion of blood for the infidels.”

Despite being consistent with such statements, dismissed as racist ignorance are the centuries of Western observation and bloody experience showing that, as Tocqueville wrote in 1838, “Jihad, Holy war, is an obligation for all believers. … The state of war is the natural state with regard to infidels … These doctrines of which the practical outcome is obvious are found on every page and in almost every word of the Koran … The violent tendencies of the Koran are so striking that I cannot understand how any man with good sense could miss them.” Likewise Samuel Huntington’s phrase “Islam’s bloody borders” is called a racist lie, used to justify neo-colonial incursions into Muslim lands. Meanwhile, of the 7 global conflicts costing more than a 1000 lives a year, 6 involve Islam.

As for “moderate” Muslims, those ordinary millions who we are constantly told abhor the jihadists as violators of the true Islam are, with some rare exceptions like M. Zudhi Jasser, curiously silent in the face of horrific jihadist violence against non-Muslims, the beheadings, torture, crucifixions, rape, kidnappings, and indiscriminate slaughter of women and children justified by supposedly slanderous distortions of their faith. After every jihadist atrocity, we never see global mass protests against this malicious degradation of Islam. But after 9/11, we did see thousands of Muslims worldwide cheering the attack in a “tremendous wave of joy,” as a London-based Saudi cleric wrote to President Bush in a Muslim newspaper.

But when newspaper cartoons deemed offensive to Mohammed, or false rumors of Korans flushed down toilets in Guantánamo, or reports of an obscure pastor planning to burn a Koran become known, then we see tens of thousands of Muslim protesting violently. Right now Muslim terrorists are committing unspeakable atrocities in northern Iraq, Syria, Nigeria, and elsewhere, but there is no global “Not in Our Name” mass movement, no “Million Muslim March” springing up among the world’s 1.6 billion Muslims to protest this alleged distortion of Islam, and to reaffirm its true dogmas of peace and tolerant coexistence.

Another example of this intellectual myopia is the way many commentators explain the anti-Semitism rampant in the Muslim world, where Hitler’s Mein Kampf and the early 20th century Russian forgery The Protocols of the Elders of Zion are popular. Misled by this popularity and the use of Nazi-era metaphors describing Jews as a “bacillus,” “cancerous tumor,” or “vermin,” these pundits attribute Muslim anti-Semitism to the malign influence of Nazism on the Muslim Middle East in the 30s. However, such an explanation mistakes rhetoric for content. Nazi-style anti-Semitism flourishes among many Muslims because their faith has already created a “potential space” for it––the Koran-sanctioned use of violence to enforce Muslim hegemony, and the broader intolerance of other religions, especially Christianity and Judaism, resented as precursors and rivals to Islam. But the hostility of the Jews in Mohammed’s traditional biographies––for example, he died after allegedly being poisoned by a Jewish woman–– has made them an special object of contempt and hatred.

Consider the doctoral dissertation of Dr. Muhammad Sayyid Tantawi. No crank or fringe character, from 1996 to his death in 2010 Tantawi was the Grand Sheik of the most prestigious institution for Sunni Islamic theology, Cairo’s Al-Azhar University, a position reserved for the highest authority in Sunni Muslim thought. His 1966 dissertation, The Children of Israel in the Qur’an and the Tradition (Sunna), has asits subtitle, The Jews’ Abominations Described in the Qur’an Are Demonstrated Throughout the Ages. The following is a representative sample of this esteemed theologian’s thinking:

“In the Qur’an the Jews are people of various bad qualities, known for their loathsome characters and contemptible behavior. The Qur’an calls them infidels and liars and ingrates; selfish, arrogant and cowardly naggers and cheaters; rebels and lawbreakers, cruel and constitutionally given to deviating from the correct path . . . Jews are prone to crime and aggression. They cheat and steal people’s money with lies. The Jews must be oppressed and humiliated.”

The bulk of Tantawi’s book supports these slanders with meticulous exegeses of the numerous Koranic verses, hadiths, biographies of Mohammed, and theological interpretations of these texts over the centuries, large numbers of which have been collected in Andrew Bostom’s The Legacy of Islamic Anti-Semitism.

This long tradition is the foundation of Tantawi’s anti-Semitic slurs, which are typical of both popular and academic writing in the region, such as the Holocaust-denying PhD dissertation of “moderate” Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas. Thus it beggars belief to think that these are idiosyncratic misinterpretations that violate the true meaning of Islam’s sacred texts, or that they are a recent creation of Nazi-era anti-Semitism––not when Tantawi was awarded such a highly prestigious position, one that requires expert knowledge of and fidelity to Islamic doctrine.

Obviously, later motifs of anti-Semitism, like the medieval blood libel or the fever-swamp paranoia of the Protocols, have over the years been taken up by Muslim anti-Semitism and used to reinforce and validate the traditional Jew-hatred of the Koran. Similarly, racists in America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries incorporated Darwinism into their racist theory and rhetoric, a practice given warrant by Darwin’s The Descent of Man, with its speculations that the Negro is the transitional species between humans and animals. But no one argues that racism was a secondary effect of Darwinism. Rather, Darwinism and its technical terms conferred a patina of “scientific” prestige and validation on a preexisting irrational hatred, just as in the 30s writings from an advanced global power like Germany reinforced and legitimized traditional Islamic anti-Semitism.

Similarly, one can argue that the eliminationist rhetoric now lacing traditional Muslim anti-Semitism reflects Nazi influence. After all, historically Muslims did not aim, like the Nazi final solution, to kill off the whole Jewish race, but to keep Jews subordinated and subjected to a humiliating second-class status, as the Koran instructs. So too in the Jim Crow South, most whites were content to keep blacks in their second-class place, and violence reflected perceptions that blacks were getting “uppity” and threatening institutional segregation. Something similar has happened in the Middle East, where the failure of the Arabs to enforce Jewish submission to Muslims with violence has led to more radical calls to eliminate Jews completely from the region. But once again, the “potential space” for such genocidal aims was in place before the Holocaust, created by the justified violence used over the centuries against Jews who resisted or threatened Muslim hegemony.

The point is not that all Muslims are anti-Semites and terrorists, or even are sympathetic to the jihadists. Rather, the scope and volume of jihadist violence, the financial and moral support given to jihadists by many millions of Muslims, and the relative silence of those who have no intention of practicing jihad themselves, all suggest that modern jihadism and its theological justifications have deep roots in Muslim theology, and ample models in Mohammed’s life and Islam’s history. This in turn means that Muslims who oppose jihadism or Muslim anti-Semitism do not have the authoritative, traditional, canonical arguments and precedents for that position, unlike the jihadists, who routinely and copiously quote chapter and verse of Islamic sacred texts in support of their violence.

Finally, pretending that modern jihadism has “nothing to do with Islam,” and spinning pleasing distortions of Islam’s theology and history, will not help sincerely reform-minded Muslims, for they know that there is no historical or theological foundation for these flattering fairy tales, which consequently lack authority in the eyes of most of their fellow Muslims. They know their own history and religion too well, unlike the Western apologists who tell esteemed and learned Muslims like Khomeini and Tantawi that they don’t know their own faith. Indeed, a movement to create a genuine liberal-democratic Islam would be truly “radical” from the perspective of traditional Islam and its beliefs, as the continuing failure of liberal democracy to take hold in the Middle East demonstrates. But most of all, such fantasies endanger our attempts to destroy a committed enemy who is motivated by a storied history of conquest and domination, and inspired and justified by the most cherished beliefs of millions of their co-religionists.

Always so disappointing when facts get in the way of media spin.

  • truebearing

This was a great and irrefutable polemic against the fools who persist in detaching the tree of Islam from its roots.

The evil committed by the devout Muslims is provably required behavior according to Islam’s teachings. So why can’t people see that? Maybe it is because they have spent so much of their lives lying that they no longer recognize the value of truth. Only the imminent threat of their own death will wrench these people from their self-deluded beliefs. By then it will be too late.

The Vatican evidently shares the “hi-jacked Religion of Peace” mantra.
See how they “unambiguously denounce and condemn” the practices of Islamic State in Iraq. In doing so they unwittingly denounce and condemn orthodox Koranic Islam. See “The Vatican is Blind to the Fundamental Barbarism of Islam”

    • 1Indioviejo1

It is the Vatican’s game. If any institution knows more about Islam than the Catholic Church, I don’t know it. They saw the birth of Islam in 610 A.D., Muslims conquered Jerusalem in 638 A.D. while Christian Byzantium ruled all of the Middle East, Egypt, North Africa, and parts of Asia Minor. I can’t figure out yet what the Vatican’s game is.

      • Mohammad Izzaterd

The Vatican’s got no game. Just last year the Pope wrote that “authentic Islam and the proper reading of the Koran are opposed to every form of violence.” I think the words clueless and chaotic come to mind. Certainly not someone in touch with God.

        • 1Indioviejo1

I don’t think they are stupid. They know more than any institution, including the CIA, Mossad, FSB, and all the rest, about the “real” Islam. I believe they do have a game going on but it is not from God.

          • Onymous

They know that, if the Pope doesn’t make this public pretense but, on the contrary, correctly identifies Islam’s teachings for what they are, then it will be publicized as a call to “crusade”. That is the Muslims’ main grievance against Catholicism, and even formerly Catholic Europeans apologize for their efforts to drive back Muslim dominance of the Holy Land.

  • Docs357

They have a book that basically says if the don’t convert kill them not much to misunderstand. Having that book doesn’t make it right lawful. If you use the term illegal around liberals they will misunderstand and claim they thought you were talking about sick birds.
If we had an American president who wasn’t a Muslim or willing to stand with them much of this would have never happened keeping in mind that Barry did nothing to stop it made much of it possible buy using our tax money to support it. He can resign his office and go fight jihad if that’s what he believes in he had absolutely no right to drag this nation into it to stab our allies in the back trash the USA I believe that’s what dictators do. He’s painted himself into a corner this dog and pony show is about to come to an end. I doubt it will be a peaceful ending he has traded his soul to the devil or given it away because of his hatred of the USA he’s been dancing for six years he will pay the band it won’t be with cash the millions of dollars he spent on himself his family and friends. Never has the office of he president been so abused in such an evil disgusting way by a man dedicated to it’s very destruction his word is no good that makes him no good. it is likely that the non-militants are simply waiting until the situation seems settled. Then, if the barbarians seem to be in control, they will join in the barbarism. If civilization and the west seems to be in control the non-militants will act as if they never supported jihad.
If we don’t understand this, and take control, then we will end up having no chance, as the bad guys multiply along with their prospects of ultimate victory.

    • mtmla

Christians in Iraq said that when ISIS arrived their muslim neighbors turned against them (the Christians). I read once an interesting saying: Moderate muslims are the ones who’ll hold your feet while the jihadis cut your head off.

      • Americana

That’s true of almost every and any instance where a cruel and barbarous crowd takes control of a culture. Otherwise how else explain how the German masses turned against the Jews, the Communists, the Catholics, the gays (really, when so many Nazis were gay themselves?), the physically deformed, the mentally challenged, the mentally ill, etc., etc. This is the mindset behind what happened in Cambodia and in several of the African nations where children were pressed into the choice of killing their parents or being killed. If your own life is in danger and you don’t know how to save yourself and your own kin, you might not extend a helping hand to others who are obviously facing death.

        • truebearing

The only ones close to the evil of Islam is N azism and Communism in the 20th Century — both derived from Marxism — but even they weren’t as depraved.

          • Americana

Nazism wasn’t derived from Marxism but I’d love to see you make the political science case for your perspective. As for what indicates the most depravity, I have to go w/the total number of dead victims and that award goes to the Nazis and the Communists, both individually and together.

What indicates the depravity of a philosophy in the most finite manner? The barbarity of the killing or the sheer inhumanity of killing anyone of a particular faith and killing into the millions under the guise of killing for that particular philosophy? Jihadis may be racking up some big numbers but they’ve still got a way to go before they reach Nazi or Communist achievement levels. Thankfully, this sectarian, DISCRIMINATING killing is what will eventually kill ISIS.

          • Onymous

Nazism was anti-Marxist, but it was an avowed type of “socialism”; as such, Nazism grew from the common trend of 19th century socialist thought that institutionalized marxism-leninism drew on. Beyond that, Hitler admired Stalin and his totalitarian methods had much in common with Leninist practices.

          • Americana

Yes, I’d maintain Onymous status too if this is your thinking on the interrelationships between Nazism and Socialism and Maxism and Leninism…

The West can’t deal with the nightmare of what to do with of 1.3 billion potential terrorists (a.k.a. Muslims), so it’s better to live in denial… that Islam isn’t really evil.

      1. Kill all of the terrorist in arms.
      2. Kill all the Imams, Ayatollahs, and any other spreading Jihad or preaching violence.
      3.Send missionaries to convert Muslims.
4.Support the secularist, anti Islamic Arabs to take power.
Eventually we would bring them to heel, but first and above all, we have to be on the same page about who our enemy really is.

      • carpe diem 36

number three is not a good one. As soon as they start converting Moslems they will just be killed, maybe by those very ones who they try to convert.

        • IslamDownpressesHumanity

Yes your observation is obvious and is exactly why The Church Of Latter Day Saints doesn’t send its missionaries to islamic states.

I know of a Korean pastor and his son who traveled to Turkey to spread the gospel some three years ago. They were never heard from again and the mohammedan authorities there don’t seem to care.

        • mollysdad

Therefore the only alternative is the wholesale destruction of Muslim societies by appropriate means.

          These means might be conventional.

They might also be of another description.

    • Americana

The West shouldn’t be dealing w/the “nightmare of what to do w/1.3 billion potential terrorists” from the perspective that 1.3 billion Muslims are terrorists or people who necessarily will become interested in performing acts of terrorism. Protesting against actions deliberately meant to denigrate and slander the Qur’an and their Prophet isn’t terrorism though some of the demonstrations and protests have led to rioting and deaths. The number of Muslims engaged in terrorism is extremely small. Out of the entire world’s Muslim population, only 10,000+ have decided to join the ISIS forces. That is an absurdly small percentage of the world’s Muslims. Even the world’s Muslims themselves haven’t concurred w/the premise of world=wide jihad or there would be more total jihadists and the world’s Muslim governments would have thrown themselves at the feet of the al-Baghdadi Caliphate. If the Muslims themselves aren’t celebrating the Caliphate then there’s something wrong w/your premise.

      • nobullhere

Football clubs only have 11 men on the field, but millions of supporters worldwide. As do ISIS, Al Qaeda etc. Your death cult has hundreds of millions of potential terrorists, and many more supporters. Your evil Koran ordains Muslims to convert, enslave or slay infidels. All Islam brings is death and destruction. It doesn’t produce many eminent scientists etc, the sort of people the world can do with. It produces in profusion the types the world can well do without.

        • Americana

If jihad was all it’s cracked up there would be be many more young men who’d be performing jihad. If the recruitment process was infallible, there’d be many more young men performing jihad. As for denigrating the Muslims who’ve contributed to the sciences, how ridiculous.

It’s not “my Koran” by the way and neither is it “my death cult.” If I had my way, there would be other solutions for their excessive religious zeal.

And it’s not by accident either. Americana isn’t even a quarter as clever as its three quarter wit thinks it is. Of course when you’re a member of the ummah over-inflated arrogance is a given.

          • Americana

I’d say over-inflated arrogance has been the hallmark of others on FPM and not me. One of the all-time FPM funniest moments was truebearing tooting his own horn — twice — over the same post of his after having claimed I’m a narcissist. It was one of those classic, never-to-be-forgotten FPM moments. It’ll be interesting to see if you commit the same fux-pas.

            4. No, I’m not interested in practicing taqqiya and I don’t practice taqqiya as far as I’m concerned. Just because Jews throw that particular label at someone doesn’t make it true and it certainly doesn’t make it stick.

Only the intellectually and FACTUALLY bereft try to take the route of throwing anti-Semitic labels my way as a way out of disproving my points/perspective.
            8. However, calling someone names and then NOT PROVING ANYTHING IS FACTUALLY WRONG w/their posts (such as failing to acknowledge the validity of my points about the assassination of Count Bernadotte) shows you’re liars.

            2. Yup, I’m Roman Catholic. My patron saint is St. Francis because of his relationship w/animals. I have an uncle who is a Jesuit priest who’s led RC tours to the Holy Land. I visited many of the RC shrines in France and Italy when I lived there. I have water from Lourdes.
            3. I wouldn’t bother practicing taqqiya under any circs.
            4. I’m not immoral, I’m not deceitful.

Talk about practicing taqqiya, we should call you ‘Big T’ signifying Big Talk and Tall Tales. You’re welcome at any point to post FACTUAL MATERIAL that blows my posts out of the water. • Americana

The above post of mine has not one sign of an equivalency anywhere but that’s not crucial for your criticism, is it? The fact is those points about the validity of jihad’s popularity are valid whether you like to have them pointed out or not.

          • IslamDownpressesHumanity

You’re a liar. A lying muslim, but I’m being redundant.

      • RAM500

There are cases where representing it accurately denigrates it!

        • Americana

There are aspects to Islamic philosophy that deserve denigrating. Why would I hope for Muslims to commit to a reformation if I wasn’t fully aware of what the downsides are to their philosophy? However, as a Roman Catholic, I’ve read the histories of how many faiths have gone through periods of terrible turmoil before arriving at a purged version of their religious perspective where the faith is no longer used against populations of ‘OTHERS.’ I hope for the very same to eventually happen to Islam.

Who knows what the likely trigger of a reformation might be? The killings of too many innocents? The killing of a particular few innocents who were important to a major Muslim figure? The possibilities of the source for reform go on and on and on and given what is happening in many regions of the world thanks to today’s jihadists the trigger could come from anywhere. Even if a reformation finds no traction in today’s Islamic world, ISIS will still be pushed back into oblivion by the remaining Arab bloc countries because it’s too dangerous to leave such an extremist religious faction hanging around as the Islamic State because of what its aims are and what its tactics have been thus far.

      • Eddie_DMC-12

Those 10,000 ISIS fighters defeated a nation’s army, took control of an area of land the size of Britain, displaced Christians that have been in these areas for 1800 years, and have been commiting genocide. What effort has Islamic world made to stop this? What have they done to stop any of the Islamic terrorist organizations of the world? Not much of anything. They are as irrevelant as the peaceful Germans of World War II. I don’t give a damn if not all of the 1.3 billion Muslims of the world are following their scripture and committing murder. The fact is a large number of them are and there is an even larger number of them that supports this behavior that don’t necessarily participate in the violence. (Check out those cool ISIS fan clubs and T-shirts!) If you are going to use this lame argument, then perhaps we can pay little attention to gun violence since the overwhelming majority of the U.S. population doesn’t kill people with guns.

There has been over 23,000 documented attacks committed by Muslims in the name of Islam around the world since 9/11/01. All of the other religions of the world combined can’t come close to this. Not even a close second. When these attacks do happen, Muslims are unusually silent. You would think a hateful organization like ISIS committing mass murder, forced conversions and establishing a caliphate all in the name of their religion would evoke mass demonstrations against it by Muslims all over the world, but no. Most Muslims in the media seem to be too busy complaining about the ban of headscarves or criticizing Israel for defending themselves from rocket attack by people with the same murderous mindset to give a damn. When Muslims do criticize the use of violence, they usually take the opportunity to take shots at the West, blaming them and warn about an anti-Muslim backlash that never transpires.

Why is it, Americana, that liberals such as yourself go out of your way and jump through intellectual hoops trying to defend this indefensible religion? A religion mind you, that has nothing in common with your supposedly liberal values? Just curious.

        • Onymous

Muslims continually kill far more Muslims than people of other religions. The Sunni vs Shi’a divide is profound, because the infidelity of the Shi’a, as perceived by the Sunni, is far more intimate than the infidelity of Christians, Jews, Yazidis, Zoroastrians, Druze, et al. The West doesn’t need to kill all the jihadists; in fact, trying to do so would only attract more jihadists. The West only needs to be a bit smart and divert them into killing each other. The Iranians, Turks, and Arabs are psychologically all very different from each other. Let them struggle forever with each other to unify the Middle East.

      • mozart

You show your idiocy and your taqqiya again, sharamuta. TEN percent of Muslims are actively participating/supporting jihad. That is ONE HUNDRED FIVE MILLION hamorim, zona. Mr. Thornton just detailed for all, simple facts, with accurate quotations, chapter and verse with unimpeachable references. Your lies, fantasies do not fly here. We all know the truth!

        • Americana

Where were those COLD, HARD FACTS w/the unimpeachable numbers of Muslims who are actively supporting/ participating in jihad? (Look below, nothing specific but Thornton uses the words “MANY MILLIONS” to make the number seem really enormous.) Bruce Thornton didn’t include that hard data in his article at all. As for Thorton’s “ONE HUNDRED FIVE MILLION MUSLIMS” guesstimate about Muslims participating in jihad all around the world, if that’s the number participating (according to Thornton’s math), they’re not getting their money’s worth. They should be much further along in the jihad process than they are if those are the round numbers of Muslims participating.

(BT) >>>> The point is not that all Muslims are anti-Semites and terrorists, or even are sympathetic to the jihadists. The problem is that the so-called “western moderate Muslims” don’t truly know their own religion. Few of them speak Arabic, and they really don’t appreciate their own faith’s tenets beyond praying 5 times/day, keeping Ramadan, and giving to charity. They’re in the same position as the Roman Catholic laity in Martin Luther’s day, when the Mass was chanted in Latin that nobody but the clergy understood.

So, when presented with a modern day “Islamic Luther” who does interpret the Koran for them in terms that they understand, they are faced with a dilemma: do they follow their religion faithfully, or do they follow modern western inclusive progressivism? As Jonah Goldberg pointed out in “Liberal Fascism” (a very good book) modern western progressives don’t realize that many people, especially young adults (who tend to be more vigorous in their faith anyways) from Middle Eastern countries, really don’t appreciate modern western moral values, see us as corrupt, decedent, and a threat to their traditional ways of life, and in turn embrace their traditional religions even more firmly.

    • IslamDownpressesHumanity

“…they don’t truly know their own religion.” For crissakes, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out what islam is allah about. Are you saying they haven’t noticed their fellow mohammedans murdering/persecuting/raping people of other faiths all over the world? Are you saying they don’t know their most holey man, mohammud, murdered/enslaved/expelled all the Jews in Saudi Arabia?

      • Paul of Alexandria

No, they haven’t. People following any religion – including, unfortunately, Christianity – can be divided into three groups: those who were brought up in the faith and basically go through the motions to keep their family happy, but really don’t get into the underlying doctrine; those who truly believe but don’t bother or can’t study the fundamental doctrines and scriptures – basically just following their favorite preacher; and those who do study and understand the teachings and writings behind the faith.

You have to understand one fundamental aspect of Islam: most Muslims are not Arab, and in order to read the Koran and Hadiths properly you must read them in Arabic. To the Muslim, the Koran is not merely inspired, but literally dictated by God – in Arabic. So no, they don’t know the history of Islam, they don’t know their own scriptures, and most particularly they don’t know that the murderers and rapists are following the true example of Mohammed! They believe the Western line that Islam is a religion of peace.

Where they run into trouble, and where most “radical muslims” are radicalized, is when they do go to a madras or take a trip to the middle east and study under an actual Wahhabi teacher who teaches them what the religion that they profess to follow actually teaches. Very, very few people will chose to abandon the religion of their youth (especially when they are threatened with death if they do so), but will follow the teacher instead. This is especially true when they look around at the sexual promiscuity and license of the West and hear the superficially reasonable words of their teacher who, after all, is only calling for them to follow the teachings of Allah.

        • Michael Copeland

This is so right. Diligent observant muslims are only trained to RECITE the Koran in its quaint old Arabic. They are not asked to understand what it means. On the contrary, from a young age they are told sharply – by being hit with hand or stick – NOT to ask questions, just to recite. As a result the only doctrines they know are what the mullah at the mosque tells them. So many are woefully ignorant.

          • IslamDownpressesHumanity

Then why do all muslim states persecute people of other faiths? Then why do all muslim states have enforced blasphemy and heresy laws? Why don’t you test your most muslims don’t know the tenets of their faith by going to an islamic state and criticising islam. Go ahead, put your money where your mouth is.

        • IslamDownpressesHumanity

Ever read the phrase by their fruits shall you know them? FFS, if I didn’t know anything about islam, I could just take a look at the actions of muslims all over the world to know how f’ed up it is. BTW, don’t most muslim-fascists live in islamic states? Do you figger they haven’t noticed how the najjis kaffir are treated in their own countries? I find your lame excuses for muslims unconvincing. I’ll tell ya what, if the muslims don’t know what their f’ed up, Jew hating death cult is allah about, why don’t you go to a muslim state and straighten them out?

    • Metro

True, most can’t read classical Arabic, BUT – Islam has already had it’s “Reformation”, where the Koran (and Hadiths, etc) is taken in a more fundamentalist and authoritative sense – a “Bible alone” kind of approach. This is the populist form, which is the virulent brand of Islam we contend with today (and since the 10th century). Islam takes the Koran as “dictation” of God (unlike Christian Scripture which is considered “inspired” but written by humans) which allows no evolution in interpretation. They do adhere to abrogation, where later scripture takes authority over earlier scripture. The problem is, Islamic scripture gets more and more violent the later you go. People like to cite the early “get along with people” verses as benign p.r., but it’s well known the verses that win are the later “cut off their heads” verses. So – a more “scripture-based” reformation *has* happened, and the problem is that Islamic scriptures are irrefutably bloodthirsty and the basis for what we see today. The more observant and scripture-based they become, the worst for the rest of the world.
Interestingly, it seems like they could use a counter-reformation, with a central interpretive authority like a Pope with power to interpret their scripture and abrogate the violent stuff, and that they’d get excommunicated if they waged jihad. Unfortunately, their scriptures are the literally the highest authority they have.

As an aside – the Bible was already in print and available in German -various German dialects that is, as there was no standard German. Owning a Bible was like owning an MRI machine, costing around $600,000. Then the printing press make printing cheaper, and Luther’s smart move was picking the most popular form of German to print his version in.

Another aside – there is another trend of some Muslims getting their hands on translations of the Koran (which is forbidden), being entirely repulsed by it, and quitting. One could only hope that would spread.

      • Paul of Alexandria

” Islam has already had it’s “Reformation”, where the Koran (and Hadiths, etc) is taken in a more fundamentalist and authoritative sense”

Precisely, and that’s where most Westerners fail to appreciate the situation. When they call for “reform” they want Islam to turn away from the “true faith”, not towards it.

Re Luther: yep. Gutenberg had just printed his magnum opus (which is still one of the most beautiful books ever printed, there’s one here in the Library of Congress). What Luther took advantage of was not just the ability to print Bibles, but the ability to print his tracts and pamphlets relatively inexpensively. He could get them out faster than the authorities could burn them.

It should also be noted that Luther was a very capable scholar and not only read Greek and Latin but was one of the first medieval church scholars to study Hebrew so that he could translate the Old Testament from the original language, and not just from the Greek Septuagint.

Excellent article. Jihad IS the highest duty of Muslims. The Koran is considered the exact words of Allah, and Muhammad executed those instructions to the letter. The Koran and Hadith explain the different contributions towards Jihad by Muslims; those that slay and are slain, and those that support it with materiel. But let there be no mistake, all Muslims MUST contribute to Jihad in Allah’s cause until the world is brought to Islam. The millions of Muslims in the west ARE part of this Jihad. Everyday they undermine our societies a little more. We have allowed another 13 years, post 9/11, of Muslim infiltration while denying exactly the things Mr. Thornton has illustrated.

The overwhelming majority of online comments from Muslims regarding the violence in the Middle East — particularly as it relates to the Yazidis and other religious minorities is that it has NOTHING to do with Islam. There is always another reason — justifying it — of course. Sometimes they will say that all religion is bad — but hardly ever do they blame what is actually written in the Koran. In fact, they NEVER do. Violence to the Jews is because of the evil Zionists who stole Muslim land; violence to the Yazidis is because they worship the devil; violence to the Christians is because…..they won’t accept the “true” religion of Islam, or whatever excuse they care to mention. When confronted with Sunni violence against Shiites, the response by Sunnis is that Shiites aren’t Muslims; and on and on and on. Many say that Islam is growing and that eventually it will be the majority religion. I disagree. In less than 100 years, it will be nothing more than a bizarre cult that few people will admit to practicing.

Islam will continue to be what it has been since the 7th century, when the merchant Muhammad led a moral reform movement among desperate tribesmen. I.e. it is a religious culture in two strata: the few with money, like Qatari merchants and Saudi oil magnates, who foster fundamentalist wahabi education and manipulate the armed militias of otherwise hopeless young men. There’s money in it for the rich ones, by expanding their influence. The 7th century caliphate from Baghdad to Andalusia only came about because plague from Tibet wiped out 1/3 of the Middle Eastern populations, weakening Persia and the Byzantine Eastern Roman Empire.

    • Onymous

Violence to the Christians is because of the Crusades, in which Christians attempted to recover the Christian Holy Land stolen by Muslims.

  • ObamaYoMoma

a movement with deep religious roots.

Of course, to all Muslims, Islam is their religion. So in that context, the writer is correct. As Muslims don’t have the first clue about what constitutes a religion. The only thing they know is that Islam is supreme above all other religions and also must subdue and subjugate all other religions and all infidels.

However, since I’m not a Muslim, I don’t consider a so-called religion that executes all apostates and all blasphemers in order to control the minds of its adherents to be a religion. In my book and in that context, that’s the definition of a cult, a very totalitarian cult. So while to Muslims Islam is a religion. To me and to most sane people, Islam is a cult and should be banned from this country ASAP because it is a very rabid cult that aims to eventually conquer us all.

the best most apologists can do is produce a Westernized nominal Muslim, a propagandist like Tariq Ramadan,

I wouldn’t arbitrarily dismiss Tariq Ramadan as being a Westernized nominal Muslim. Indeed, like all Muslims, Tariq Ramadan is also a jihadists. However, in stark contrast to ISIS, AQ, Hamas, and Hezbollah members, he is a leader in the non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad movement, which is not only astronomically far more prevalent relative to violent forms of jihad as for as jihad goes, but which also represents an exponentially far greater threat to the infidel world at large. Why? Well, since the Islamic totalitarian world is so backwards relative to the infidel world, they can never hope to defeat us militarily or via violent jihad. However, through mass Muslim infiltration of our countries and via demographic conquest, which are two very destructive forms non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad, they most certainly can defeat us. As a matter of fact, several Euroloon countries in Europe will become Muslim majority countries in the second half of this century.

    As for “moderate” Muslims

The existence of “moderate” Muslims, like the existence of “radical” Muslims, is a political correct myth. In reality, they only exist in the minds of loons and other unhinged moonbats. In Islam, the Western definition of a so-called “moderate” Muslim is the definition of a blasphemous apostate that per the dictates of Islam must be executed.

The truth is all so-called “moderate” Muslims are also jihadists in one form or another, but unlike the violent jihadists that constitute the members of ISIS, AQ, Hamas, and Hezbollah, the so-called “moderate” Muslims are the non-violent stealth and deceptive jihadists. As forms of non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad relative to forms of violent jihad are astronomically far more prevalent.

Their jihad is waged non-violently and by stealth and deception intentionally for a reason: If they migrated to the infidel world and started blowing things up and slaughtering infidels in cold-blood in the streets, their non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad would not get very far.

The reality is there are no so-called “moderate” Muslims. Not even the professional “moderate” Muslim, Zudhi Jasser himself, is a moderate Muslim, as his personal jihad is to dupe the West into wasting all of its resources trying to democratize the Islamic totalitarian world, which is absolutely impossible.

Everybody is extremely paranoid about Muslims perpetrating another 9/11 type violent jihad attack in America except for me. With the exception of a few rogue elements within Islam, the odds of it happening again is very slim to none, because it would be incredibly counterproductive for their intentionally non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad, as it would attract much overdue focus and scrutiny on Islam and Muslims.

Indeed, look around the world, Muslim migrants to the infidel world never ever assimilate and integrate into infidel society. Why? Because to do so would require them to morph into infidels, and in Islam morphing into an infidel would be an automatic death sentence.

Hence, it is very obvious that Muslims don’t migrate to the infidel world to assimilate and integrate, but instead to eventually dominate and subjugate. Nonetheless, because they aren’t blowing things up and slaughtering innocent infidels in the streets, they are considered to be so-called “moderate” Muslims by the masses.

Especially since what is actually violent forms of jihad is almost always conflated as somehow being terrorism by so many, which is another very false analogy. Since Muslims don’t target and murder innocent civilian infidels in cold-blood because they are terrorists. Rather they do it because “total warfare” is proscribed for them per the dictates of Sharia and because slaughtering innocent civilian infidels in cold-blood is the weak underbelly of infidel society.

    • Paul of Alexandria

Oh, it’s a religion – in the same way that the worship of Quetzalcoatl and Baal were religions. Nothing says that religions have to be nice. Your religion is the system of beliefs that you form your life around. (Deities are optional, atheism and Buddhism are religions also).

Whether Islam can be considered a cult is a matter of semantics. Usually, cults don’t have billions of followers. The problem with banning it is that we can’t – by our own first amendment. So long as the Muslims behave themselves, we must let them be. What I would say is that we need to be much less tolerant of them when they depart from our cultural norms – e.g. refusing to let dogs into their taxis.

      • IslamDownpressesHumanity

The US Constitution isn’t a dead document dipped in amber. It can be changed and it should — otherwise the moslems will be changing it for you, once they gain the political power to do so.

      • ObamaYoMoma

Oh, it’s a religion – in the same way that the worship of Quetzalcoatl and Baal were religions.

Apparently, like most people, you don’t have a clue what Islam is. Therefore, you naively accept Islam’s false claim to be a religion at face value like most people.

Nonetheless, unlike you I don’t accept a so-called religion that has as its first and foremost requirement the total, complete, and unconditional “submission” to the “will of Allah” of all Muslims under the penalty of death for apostasy and death for blasphemy. Thus, unlike other religions, Islam is not a faith. Although, it is routinely called a faith by the naïve all the time.

Do you understand what death for apostasy and death for blasphemy means? Apparently not. In any event, let me spell it out for you. It means that any and all Muslims that decide they no longer want to continue to be Muslims are executed. It also means that any and all Muslims that defy the tenets of Islam are also executed. In other words, more than it is just a so-called religion, Islam is by far more a very draconian form of totalitarianism that seeks to make itself and its followers supreme throughout the world.

Meanwhile, what is this so-called “will of Allah” that all Muslims must totally, completely, and unconditionally submit to under the penalties of death for apostasy and death for blasphemy? In essence, it’s Sharia, i.e., Islam’s very draconian form of totalitarian law.

Moreover, the sole fundamental purpose of mainstream orthodox Islam, which is the only kind, by the way, is to subjugate all infidels and all religions into Islamic totalitarianism, i.e., harsh and degrading dhimmitude, through both violent and non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad (holy war) and the eventual imposition of Sharia (Islamic totalitarian law) to ultimately make itself and its followers supreme throughout the world.

As a matter of fact, In Islam all Muslims, including the women and children, are obligated to wage jihad in one form or another, which is a holy war waged by ALL MUSLIMS against ALL INFIDELS in the cause of Allah to ultimately make Islam and its followers supreme throughout the world. Thus, all mainstream orthodox Muslims in the world, including the women and children, are jihadists, i.e., mujahideen (holy warriors), in one form or another. Otherwise, they are blasphemous apostate that per the dictates of Islam must be executed.

You see like in the old Communist Soviet Union where all non-conformers were sent to the Soviet Gulags, in Islam all non-conformers are summarily executed.

Thus, what faith-based religions also executes all apostates and all blasphemers the same way only Islam does? The answer, of course, is none of them. If they did, they wouldn’t be faith-based religions. Indeed, what faith-based religions have as their sole fundamental purpose making itself and its followers supreme at the expense of all other infidels and all religions similar to Islam? Again, the answer is none of them. Moreover, what faith based religions also obligates all adherents, including the women and children, to wage holy war on its behalf? Once again the answer is none of them.

Therefore, Islam is obviously not a religion at all and, indeed, it’s very totalitarian nature that denies all adherents the freedom of conscience to choose not to be a Muslim or to choose not to adhere to all the tenets of Islam via the penalties of death for apostasy and death for blasphemy, makes Islam a cult, a very totalitarian cult. As Islam very strictly controls the minds of its adherents. Indeed, every adherent of Islam is in reality a slave of Allah.

Meanwhile, since when does the number of adherents have anything to do with whether or not a so-called religion is a cult? With all due respect, that is utterly absurd.

Not to mention also that since waging jihad is a fundamental holy obligation incumbent upon all Muslims in one form or another, including the women and children, then that means all the Muslims currently living here in the infidel world today are also jihadists in one form or another. In their case, however, they are non-violent stealth and deceptive jihadists, as waging violent jihad here in the infidel world would be incredibly counterproductive as it would quickly get them and their non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad kicked out of the infidel world.

The problem with banning it is that we can’t – by our own first amendment.

The first amendment protects religions. It certainly doesn’t protect a very totalitarian cult like Islam that seeks to make itself and all of its followers supreme throughout the world at the expense of all non-believers, i.e., infidels. Indeed, mass Muslim immigration with all of its excess baggage, which in reality is really non-violent stealth and deceptive jihad for the strategic purposes of mass Muslim infiltration of our society and for eventual demographic conquest, means that Islam is incompatible with all non-Muslim infidels, since Muslims, per the dictates of Islam, will always strive (i.e., wage jihad), to subjugate them in order to make itself and its adherents supreme. Indeed, what other religions besides the so-called religion of Islam always strives to subjugate all unbelievers in order to make itself and all of its adherents supreme?

Not to mention as well, that all the earlier peaceful verses of the Koran, the ones Muslims always cite to dupe gullible useful idiot infidels, have all been abrogated and replaced by the latter issued sword verses of the Koran that they conflict with and contradict and that also obligates all Muslims to wage jihad against all infidels until such time as Islam and its adherents have been made supreme throughout the world.

Indeed, anyone that is naïve enough to consider Islam to be a religion is more than just a little self-hating and also has very strong suicidal tendencies. I think you meet that profile.

        • Onymous

Very good argument: Islam is not truly a “religion”, therefore it is not protected by the US Constitution, and cold be banned as being a totalitarian cult. Interesting, indeed! Within the last two weeks, a devout Muslim visiting in the US said to me, beaming with satisfaction, that the US is truly the most free country for practice of religion. In the next breath he told me that the US Muslim population increased by six-fold within the last few decades or so, because Muslim women have, on average, half a dozen children, while American women have barely enough, if that, to maintain their own population. That is a long-term strategy for exerting influence through democratic institutions like elections, and other expressions of group demands.
