Petition signing is a business. Every day men and women with clipboards troll the streets around campus areas working for contractors who are outsourced by non-profits like Greenpeace to get people to sign on to a petition for the whales, the children or clean energy.
It’s not really about the petition. It’s about collecting information for a mailing list. Campus areas are targeted because if you have a stupid cause, you’re more likely to get signatures there.
It’s an experiment that has been tested for decades with all sorts of stupid petitions. A significant number of college students will sign absolutely horrible things as long as they’re phrased in loosely progressive terms.
This from Campus Reform is another reminder of that.
Students at George Washington University (GWU) willingly signed a petition supporting the deportation of one American citizen in exchange for one illegal immigrant.
“Please sign our petition for President Obama to deport one American citizen, in exchange for one undocumented immigrant,” read the petition. “Everyone must be allowed a shot at the ‘American Dream.’ Americans should not be greedy. Let us right the wrongs of our past and make another’s dreams come true.”
“It makes sense,” one student told Campus Reform. “Like, I’ve noticed that there is a lot of like hatred against undocumented immigrants and it’s not necessarily their fault.”
What’s the secret here? The same one used by Obama.
Younger liberals in particular are unable to process negative consequences from a progressive policy. You can tell them that this Green Energy plan will kill all children under 6 and they’ll talk about how they’re for it because the environment smells too much.
This is how Obama operates.
