California May Pass Law to Protect Black People from Soda

Bloombergism is alive and well in California as another front is declared in the War on Soda. Apparently black people can’t be trusted to decide what they want to eat or drink on their own.

They must be protected from their food choices by the nanny state.

A bill introduced in the California senate would require warning labels for soda and give state bureaucrats the authority to inspect businesses to ensure compliance.

Sen. Bill Monning (D.) introduced the “Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Safety Warning Act” last week in the name of “public health,” which would prohibit selling soda or any sweetened drink with 75 calories or more without a safety warning.

“When the science is this conclusive, the State of California has a responsibility to take steps to protect consumers,” Monning said in a statement. “As with tobacco and alcohol warnings, this legislation will give Californians essential information they need to make healthier beverage choices.”

And then we can outlaw and tax soda and prevent it from being sold… because that will make everyone healthier.

The bill would “prohibit a person from distributing, selling, or offering for sale a sugar-sweetened beverage in a sealed beverage container, or a multipack of sugar-sweetened beverages, in this state unless the beverage container or multipack bears a specified safety warning.”

So it’s a war on sugar then. Let the people drink unsweetened Kale.

Vending machines would also have to display the safety warning, and require businesses to keep invoice records of all sugar-sweetened beverages “distributed, purchased, or sold,” for two years.

“The department and a local enforcement agency shall have the right to inspect, examine, and copy those records at any time during normal business hours for the purpose of ensuring compliance by distributors with the requirements of this article,” the bill said. “The refusal to allow a full inspection, examination, or copying of those records shall constitute a violation of this article.”

Failing to comply with the legislation would result in a $50 to $500 fine. If passed, the bill would go into effect July 2015.

Our police state is nothing if not magnificently petty.

Monning’s office said the bill is necessary for California’s “communities of color.”

“The health implications are felt most acutely by California’s communities of color, which are the largest consumers of these sugary drinks,” a press release said. “Unless the obesity epidemic is reversed, one in three children born after 2000—and nearly half of Latino and African American children—will develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.”

Isn’t that a concern for their parents? Oh I forget, California is their parent. California Uber Alles.

Ah. Sounds like “disparate impact” is striking out in a new direction. I can foresee no end to the malfeasance this sophistry will enable.

    • objectivefactsmatter

Disparate impact is the gift that can’t ever stop giving if you’re a Marxist tyrant.

  • CaoMoo

Ive seen this episode of the Simpsons where Marge pushes to and gets sugar banned in Springfield, and Homer becomes a sugar smuggler. What does it say when your legislator is reenacting a prime time sit com in real time?

“What does it say when your legislator is reenacting a prime time sit com in real time?”

      …and it isn’t even funny.

    • Shadowwind

I remember a King of the Hill episode (“Trans-fascism”) in which Arlen bans trans fat to be more like trendy liberal cities. About as successful as you would imagine, complete with a black market for burgers and stuff. Interesting to see liberals taking cues from TV shows and not getting the humor (but certainly not surprising).

  • nopeacenow

Too bad someone can’t pass a law from stopping California from passing laws. Then California might become liveable again.

  • objectivefactsmatter

    California Fascism.

  • lyndaaquarius

“communities of color” is such a disgusting,Leftist term . Makes my skin crawl .

White Leftists especially, really look down on black people,so condescending.

    • catherineinpvb

These narcissistic and so totalitarian inclined, are the original ‘spider-fly’ – sugar coat it – operatives. It is Liberalism/Progressivism/Leftism that needs a Warning label; as are warnings needed against those who are ‘The Believers’, who by turn, mindlessly crank out for mass consumption; their perversion of ‘love of neighbor’; patriotism and altruism.

How is it; that around the world; we witness horrific scenes of life and death; whereby citizens are engaged in the fight for their lives, so as to claim their Inalienable Rights as human beings. At same time; those ‘most free’; still, find a comfort as they rest in the bubbling hot water that is soon to be; Frog Soup.

      • laura r

i am still not getting this. if they want their soda they can buy their soda.

        • catherineinpvb

LOL and you would think. . .but of course; the Pro-Choice Left, clearly, has never repped ‘pro-choice’. . .America is now the Left’s plantation; and they are making the best of it.

Forward!. . .The Left rides on the oxymoron and the lie; so embedded.

          • lyndaaquarius

Hope you’re reading Daniel Greenfield. Think you’d really appreciate his work. He’s also known as Sultan Knish.

          • catherineinpvb

Read him here – and elsewhere . . .; but never have been to his blog. Thanks for the ‘tip’; and a ‘heads up’ and Thank You, to Dan; right here. ;-/ Off to the Sultan Knish. . .

    • glpage

Well, of course they do because they are so much smarter than everyone else.

      • lyndaaquarius

But,they’re simply not. Can you name one prominent Leftist who could destroy any of the following in a structured debate,Thomas Sowell,Mark Levin,Rush,David Horowitz,Dennis Prager,Daniel Greenfield, etc? Why can’t their shallow, silly, failed and destructive ideas be exposed on a public stage? Our nation is being ruined with empty slogans that never get challenged.

        • glpage

Sorry Lynda, i still haven’t figured out how to get the dripping with sarcasm inflection into my typed responses. I do agree with you that lefties would find it difficult to stay on a debate with the folks you mentioned.

          • SCREW SOCIALISM

            glpage,

Try using the “/sarc” “tag” or the “NOT” suffix.

  • Elizabeth Cape Cod

It’s the delusional mindset of a liberal that thinks they can control behavior.

    And interestingly….they’re all on-board with marijuana….:-l

    • Daniel Greenfield

Sure and homosexuality. No health risks there.

      • Elizabeth Cape Cod

Can you do anything about the excessive censorship of these comments? I wrote a perfectly acceptable comment to you several hours ago, still waiting for moderator approval .

    • catherineinpvb

Political Correctness is critical tool for ‘control’. . .albeit more subtle. Change the way a person thinks. . .and you change the behavior of a culture. . .(There are those who resist; of course; but all impacted.) As for the Left not being successful in their ‘control’ of people; sadly, we have plenty of evidence to the contrary; as our past – and our ongoing history – gives witness.

Remember ‘The Truman Show’? The rationale is the least of ‘the journey’ for those who, by their mega narcissism, find pleasure in controlling another human being; and better per challenge, many of them. The best, for those most power-greedy; entire populations. (And for Soros; the world.)

(As for control – ‘outcome based’ initiatives – as we speak; our entire ‘Middle Class’ is on a train ride. They are arriving daily, on the Left’s ‘Level – egalitarian – playing field. They were not ‘herded’; and their ticket, is free. More than a few of same, are no doubt, ‘stoned’; making their ride, all the more fun. )

  • Bamaguje

This is a very dangerous slippery slope. Next thing you know, fat people will be suing soda drink companies for making them fat… just like with tobacco.

    • Daniel Greenfield

      It’s been done

  • Habbgun

Ahhhhhh……the first “Israelizing” of blacks by the Left. You don’t know what’s good for you, you cost your betters money better spent on ourselves and weird logic that says things like you’ll be a child your entire lifetime “and nearly half of Latino and African American children—will develop Type 2 diabetes in their lifetime.”—-Expect more of this as the taxes come in and they don’t need the votes anymore. What will the Left “suddenly” find out about blacks? Will they condemn ethnocentricity? Too religious? Not tolerant enough when immigration catches up and black neighborhoods and jobs are swamped? Islamophobic if Moslems bomb black churches? This is going to be interesting.

  • laura r

do you really think this will “control” behavior? no way. people will eat & drink what they want too. i do agree there should be ingredients listed, chemicals & sugar content. (people didnt consume this 100 yrs ago. that is why modern folks are so ill). there is nothing wrong w/the warning. the crap is for sale, & anyone can buy it. whats the problem? the race thing is ridiculous, its just a rational. 95% of of all people are gross fat, sick & beastly. i think the bottom line is to impose fines after inspections, a way to get revnue. mr. greenfield dont project, nothing to see here. we need to look beneath the b.s. for the real modivations.

    • laura r

its the inspections & fines. all about the $. what will they think of next? (not anout health not about race not about income). this is the short version.

  • Hard Little Machine

They’ll make being fat a covered pre existing condition under Obamacare soon and toss it in the same basket as handicaps as well. Be prepared to shell out billions to support the obese on the tax payers dime.

  • glorifing

This article is disingenuous.. the bill doesn’t specify race, nor does it call for a “ban” on carbonated beverages.

  • visrecce

All these mandated labeling requirements coming soon to a store near you….why can’t they pass a law to label GMOs.
However, in regards to the article….the communities of color remark is probably one of the most racist quotes I’ve read recently. It makes a complete insinuation that those who are in that category are unable to make decisions for themselves, or they are not smart enough to know the consequences of their actions.–Sen. Monning—you need to check yourself!
