Director of National Intelligence Lied to Congress About Muslim Brotherhood Contacts

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

There’s apparently a long list of things that DNI Clapper lied to Congress about, but as Ryan Mauro at the Clarion Project reveals, Brotherhood contacts are also on the list.

The story of the deception began when the Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testified to Congress on February 10, 2011 saying that the Muslim Brotherhood is “a very heterogeneous group, largely secular, which has eschewed violence and has described Al-Qaeda as a perversion of Islam.”

In the same hearing, Clapper was asked by Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL) about the administration’s relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood. He answered, “There have been outreaches to the Muslim community in general, but I guess we’re not aware of any direct outreach to these particular organizations. That is, if you’re speaking domestically.”

Was Clapper telling the truth?

Just four months later, on June 12, 2012, a 90-minute “Roundtable Discussion” took place at National Intelligence’s headquarters in McLean, Virginia. At the meeting, Clapper met in person with a representative of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA). Also present were National Counter-Terrorism Center Director Matthew Olson and Alexander Joel, ODNI Civil Liberties Protection Officer.

So that would be a firm “no”. And it’s not like ODNI wasn’t aware of the issues.

Declassified emails obtained by the Clarion Project show that staff inside the ODNI expressed concern about ISNA, even suggesting interagency intelligence-gathering on the organization. The author(s) of the internal emails also wanted intelligence gathering on the Council on American-Islamic Relations, another group labeled by the Justice Department as an unindicted co-conspirator in the Holy Land Foundation trial. Like ISNA, the Justice Department listed CAIR as a U.S. Muslim Brotherhood entity.

The heavily redacted ODNI emails, written sometime between January 2009 and August 2012, read:

“I’m also interested if our team could work with the FBI and DHS on any Muslim Brotherhood collection and analysis opportunities such as looking at the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) and the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) ongoing relationships with MB int’l leadership and enterprises.”

On June 10, 2010 an email was written by someone within the ODNI’s National Counter-Terrorism Center referencing internal discussions about engagement with Muslim Brotherhood-linked groups. It reads, “We have a large MB [Muslim Brotherhood] presence on the West Coast, and there has been some discussion here about engagement—both state and federal—with folks who are also MB members.”

This wasn’t a case where a Federal agency was clueless. Clapper and co. knew exactly what they were getting into and lied about it.

I guess Mr. Clapper is completely unaware of the MB’s entire history since 1928 and the views of its founder Hassan al-Bannah and subsequent member Sayyid Qutb, or that the Muslim Student Association is MB, or unaware that the IIIT in Virginia is MB, or that they have an English language website that gives their mission statement. This guy is the head of an intelligence agency? Hey Clapper try Google you might learn something.

Clapper lied and the most important question is, why? Why is he covering up the activities of America’s enemies? Is it because Obama is directing him to? How is it serving the national interest? (just kidding)

Clapper has nowhere to hide. He has to either admit he has repeatedly lied or his profoundly incompetent. Funny how this is true of most of Obama’s administration, with the exception of Biden. He’s just profoundly incompetent.

    • GeeGee

      Exactly. WHY??
Is our government already being changed from the inside out BY the Muslum Brotherhood w/ Valerie’s help?
Is it at all possible that some may be … being ‘threatened’?
(Fear & violence is their ‘weapon’ of choice.)
What if our legislators are even more afraid (or just Politically Correct)f than ‘We the People’ ??

Bin Laden told America in an interview with ABC news more than 2 decades ago, that ‘islam’ was at war with America.
btw … they still are … never stopped. (since 1000 AD!)

President Obama supports the Muslim Brotherhood and may be a member. (1) When Hillary Clinton was his Secretary of State, her close aide was Huma Abedin, whose family is Muslim Brotherhood and Muslim Sisterhood; (2) Obama’s half-brother from Kenya is a leader of the Muslim Brotherhood; (3) Obama has supported the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and objects to the overthrow of their leader Morsi.

The focus of this article is on CAIR and ISNA. Then there is ACMCU, AIC, AMAC, AMF, AMJA, AMP, AMPAC, AMSE, AMSA, AMSS, FCNA, FOSNA, IAK, IBS, ICD, ICNA, IHC, IMA, ITC, IIC, ITTT, ISA, MANA, MAS, MAYA, MBA, MCA, MIA, MLFA, MOS, MPAC, MSA, MUNA, MWL, MYNA, NAIT, NAIC, NICS, OIC, OCF, USCMO, to name just some.

Muslims make up about 1% of the population. The number of alphabet-soup organizations they have representing them would be comical if it were not so serious.

  • Gee

Shock – the Odumba regime lied to Congress – they have been lying to the world since 2008

  • kevinstroup

Clapper is a corrupt apparatchik. Only a tool would say that the MUSLIM brotherhood is secular.

  • SCREW SOCIALISM

Who knew that the black jihad flag had quotes in Arabic from the New York Times?

  • kikorikid

    “almost got away with it.”
He has gotten away with it because no corrective
action has been taken. But, as you say, we have noticed
and a lot of folks are lining up as opposition.
Obama has stated he will side with Islam.
Will he stand next to them at the wall?

The fact that people like Clapper are lying to us is bad and should lead to job termination. The fact that they are lying to us about matters that weaken national security should be considered treason.
