Frank Rich’s Faux Fox News Victory Lap

New York Magazine decided to give Frank Rich, an extremely stupid man, four virtual pages to fill with sneering and insults set around the thesis that FOX is no threat because its audience is in decline.

What Rich eventually admits, somewhere between the 100th insult, is that the cable news in general is declining and growing older. Frank Rich argues that FOX News viewers are older than the average, but once your median viewing age is in the sixties, the fine points don’t really matter all that much. Nor should the senior vote be underestimated.

What’s missing from Frank Rich’s rant is any ability to gauge FOX News’ online impact and the impact of conservative sites from Front Page Magazine to The Blaze to Daily Caller and dozens of others. claims a median age of 48 and an average income of $70k. It also claims almost a billion monthly pageviews and 27 million uniques.

If Frank Rich were intellectually honest, he would have dealt with the implications of that. But he isn’t. His thesis is often stupid and random. Take this claim…

As a pair of political analysts wrote at Reuters last year, “When the mainstream media reigned supreme, between 1952 and 1988, Republicans won seven out of the ten presidential elections,” but since 1992, when “conservative media began to flourish” (first with Rush Limbaugh’s ascendancy, then with Fox), Democrats have won the popular vote five out of six times.

Rich is quoting Reuters here, but it’s still a stupidly random argument that emphasizes correlation over causation. Much like the rest of his screed.

Jerry Doyle often harps on the age of Fox News viewership. He also says it will become extinct due to increasing age. He has the 6th largest talk radio show before. This year he is #8.

I grow weary of him bashing Rush. Actually he has not done that in about 2 months. He coined the phrase “Combat to commerce’. He has a lot of valid points. He stakes out a libertarian view. Basically he is in Talk radio because the LEFT black listed him after he ran for Congress as a Republican.

TV is old and cable news is old. Those are just general realities.

I went to junior high school with Frank Rich. There are a lot of bad things you can say about him, but being stupid is not one of them. Perhaps intellectually bankrupt would be a better criticism.

    • Les Nessman

Smarmy, condescending, intolerant of the ideas of others. Morally and intellectually lazy. But not stupid.

Maybe he was smart in junior high, but maybe he hasn’t matured much since then. If he makes demonstrably stupid arguments, he deserves to be called stupid, and intellectually bankrupt. To use one’s intellectual gifts to lie is stupid, in my opinion.

    My thoughts:

Frank Rich sure has affection for Lester Holt in hipster glasses talking about polar bears and Elmo dolls.

Do demographics count 20 year olds living in their mom’s basement?

Go back a few week and read about the New York political machine gloating about the death of conservatism. Now it’s Fox News. Please don’t let these people be in my operating room.
