No, 30,000 Alaskans Did Not Sign a Petition to Join Russia

Alaska-the-last-frontier

I assumed that this non-story would have gone away on its own, but some conservative sites still insist on taking it seriously.

Some Alaskans apparently are not opposed to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent annexation of Crimea—in fact, they are hoping to be grabbed up next. More than 30,000 Alaskans have signed the petition “Alaska back to Russia,” pleading that the White House allow them to secede and join their native land. If the request garners 100,000 signatures by April 20, the White House will make an official response.

The petition titled “WE PETITION THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION TO: Alaska back to Russia” was clearly authored by a Russian language speaker with no sense of how grammar in this language works.

The author claims to be in Anchorage. With sentences like, “Vote for secession of Alaska from the United States and joining Russia” he’s more likely to be based out of Moscow.

Most of the signers don’t even list a state. The few who do list a state seem to be in New York. After scrolling a dozen pages, I’ve seen Akron, Ohio and Lutz, Florida and Bellevue, WA. I have yet to find one Alaskan signature.

Even one fake Alaskan signature.

I won’t speculate on the reason why people from other states might want to get rid of Alaska, but I’m sure if we had a petition to turn over California or New York to Russia, a bunch of people from other states might sign on to it too as a joke.

There’s enough Russian propaganda floating around the internet. I don’t see why conservative sites should be adding to it. It’s one thing to point out that Obama is weak and inept. It’s another thing to champion an enemy nation and its tyrant.

  • Gee

Well part of California was in the Russian Empire. Ashokawna or Bidapte, Slavianka River, Rio San Ygnacio, Rio San Ignacio was renamed after the US bought the colony as part of the Steward’s Folly.

    • Texas Patriot

Historical claims to land based on prior occupation or conquest mean nothing in the real world. The true owners of land are those who can use it profitably to create value to support themselves and others in need. When the land remains fallow and unproductive, it’s time for new ownership. That is the way things are, and that is the way things have always been. Everything else is background noise.

      • mikell

        Most of Alaska is unproductive.

        • Texas Patriot

So is most of Siberia. ;-)

      • Gee

Tell that to the Arabs. Their conquest and occupations are very real and absolutely supported in the real world

        • Texas Patriot

Not a problem. What they took from others can be taken back from them if they fail to conduct themselves in accordance with international law, and there should be no surprise about that.

          • Drakken

There you go using that so called international law thingy again. There are only sovereign countries with sovereign laws and no one is obliged to follow anything out of a so called international body.

          • Texas Patriot

International law is another thing you’re going to end up liking, Drak. Just remember this. It can be used as a sword as well as a shield.

          • Drakken

Sorry, again your wishful thinking is on full display. The UN is less than useless and them trying to enforce anything on anyone is laughable and naïve. What is so called international law under the UN going to do? Send a strongly worded letter of disapproval? Yeah, sure, Sparky that will get the job done. The Russians are laughing at the so called international community and their international law nonsense.

          • Texas Patriot

International law does not depend on the UN. It existed long before the UN existed, and the body of law that it represents will probably exist long after the UN ceases to exist. The benefit of acting within the bounds of the law is that it provides a moral justification for doing what needs to be done. And in the case of terror attacks being launched from states that tacitly permit terrorists to operate on their territory gives rise to a right of self-defense by those attacked that exists separately and apart from the existence of the UN or any action by the UN. Let’s put it this way. When you’re attacked, you don’t need a ruling by the UN or anyone else before you have a right to defend yourself, and in the case of international terror attacks sponsored or instigated by Iran, the record is well-documented, and it is highly likely that we could blow Iran off the map tomorrow and still be within the broad parameters of international law. Beginning to get the picture?

          • Gee

Since when has any Arab regime even remotely conducted themselves in accordance with international law?
I feel you are one of two types of people. A joker than is playing some sort of prank or a total idiot that hasn’t a clue in the world.
            Which is it?

          • Texas Patriot

I’m probably both, but so what. The truth is that from the point of view of international law, it doesn’t matter in the slightest whether any Arab regime has ever conducted itself according to international law. What matters is whether the West is prepared to enforce international law going forward.

  • Texas Patriot

Obama is not “weak and inept”, he’s subtle and shrewd, and the pompous blowhards of the pseudo-conservative right can’t even begin to perceive it.

    • herb benty

You’re probably right, but I’m thinking it’s Jarrett who is subtle and shrewd, with Obama as the smiley face shown to the masses. Obama is THE ONE the American Commies(Progs), were waiting for who, even levelheaded citizens, would vote for(First Black POTUS). America was deceived, big time.

      • Texas Patriot

Will you still think that if Obama defangs the Iranian mullahs by blowing their nuclear weapons complex completely out of the ground?

        • herb benty

Obama is assisting the Iranian Theocracy to OBTAIN nuclear weapons, while Kerry threatens Israel to negotiate with PLO terrorists. Texas Patriot? I doubt that very much.

          • Texas Patriot

I’m probably so much more of a conservative than you have any conception about it’s not even funny. What Obama is doing right now is setting up the Iranians for the destruction of their nuclear weapons plant, and they probably don’t recognize it any more than you do. First of all, the Iranians contend that their nuclear efforts are peaceful, and they expect the world to believe that. As Christopher Hitchens pointed out in 2009, we all know that they’re lying, and they’ve been caught lying.

            https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4E-6Sg5wYBM

Russia and China probably know this as well, but as the main supplier of material and technology, they are obliged to give Iran the benefit of the doubt. Hence the generous lifting of sanctions with the condition that the Iranians provide full access and disclosure of everything they are doing. Pseudo-conservatives think Obama has caved in to a no-verification deal, and perhaps the Iranians do as well. The Russians and the Chinese know better, and in the event that the Iranians fail to permit the necessary inspections, the Russians and the Chinese will have plenty of political cover to stand aside as we blow the Iranian nuclear complex completely out of the ground.

Sorry to disappoint you, and I really hate to shatter your worldview, but Obama is probably quite a bit more of an Authentic American Conservative than you are, and if he goes forward with the destruction of the Iranian nuclear weapons complex, you are going to owe him an apology.

          • herb benty

I apologise to you, if what you say is true. My question really boils down to this. Will those mullahs use a few nucs before they are stopped. Is playing “chicken” with nuclear weapons smart?

          • Texas Patriot

HB: Will those mullahs use a few nucs before they are stopped. Is playing “chicken” with nuclear weapons smart?

My guess is that we know exactly how close the Iranians are to developing a nuclear weapon and being able to use it, and we have no intention of letting them get that far. It’s a delicate balancing act between never giving the mullahs the chance to harm anyone with nuclear weapons and giving the Russians and Chinese enough political cover in the event we have to act unilaterally and preemptively to prevent that from happening. But the answer to your question is, no, I don’t think we will ever allow the Iranian mullahs to get into the position of being able to use nuclear weapons against anyone. And if I’m wrong, I will owe you an apology.

          • Drakken

That is your problem right there, you guess to much instead of actually knowing something.

          • Texas Patriot

Drak, I would say that your problem is you’ve forgotten that there is more than one way to solve military problems. Land armies are nice, but they are expensive, very slow, very cumbersome, and they male very easy targets for fifteen-year-olds with homemade IEDs detonated by cell-phones. Submarine-launched cruise missiles are much more efficient, much more discreet, and much harder to defend against. My guess is that you’re going to end up liking this kind of warfare.

          • herb benty

            Fair enough.

          • Texas Patriot

            Okay.

          • Drakken

Really? Obummer is setting up the Iranians you say? So please enlighten the rest of us where the military is preparing for this very scenario of which you speak? Where are the forward deployed units practicing bombing runs? Where are the logistics in preparation for said raids, and bombing runs? Where are the naval contingency and supply ships filled with armaments for 30 days? Where are the troop deployments and new base camps? Oh what’s that you say? There aren’t any preparations being made. So keeping believing in those rainbows and unicorns, they actually might come true. Meanwhile, keep huffing on that bong pipe.

          • Texas Patriot

Drakken: Obummer is setting up the Iranians you say? So please enlighten the rest of us where the military is preparing for this very scenario of which

It’s a new day, Drak. No troops necessary. No boots on the ground. No blood the sand. Just submarine-launched cruise missiles with state of the art bunker-busting technology equipped with whatever force is necessary to do the job. The Iranians go to bed one night with their nuclear weapons complex intact. They wake up the next morning and its gone. Nice and quick, nice and clean, and nice and easy, with a minimum of collateral damage. Welcome to the 21st Century.

          • Drakken

The missiles that go on those subs and warships are not being deployed on said subs and ships, nor are they being sent to the theater. What is it about reality that you are not getting?

          • Texas Patriot

Unless you have access to classified information not generally available to the public at large, you would have no way of knowing: (a) what special bunker-busting technology is being developed for purposes of destroying the Iranian nuclear weapons complex; or (b) whether it has been deployed on ships or subs in theater. Just because the president has not held a press conference stating that the necessary weapons have been developed and deployed on the necessary launch platforms does not mean those actions have not taken place.

          • Drakken

Jesus h effing Christ! You really are bloody stupid aren’t you? Keep huffing on the bong pipe, obviously you know absolutely nothing about national security affairs, how the military works and anything about simple logistics.

          • Texas Patriot

            Speak for yourself, Drak. ;-)

        • Drakken

I told you once and I’ll tell you a thousand times until you get it through that drug addled mind of yours, that it ain’t going to happen, period, end of goddamn story. So here you are repeating the same bullsh*t that Obummer and your wishful thinking is the same thing. Obviously your dad didn’t beat some sense into you when you were younger.

          • Texas Patriot

Calm down, Drak. You just afraid that it’s going to make your heroes the pseudo-conservatives like John McCain and Lindsary Graham look like horrendously inept knotty-waddies, which of course is what they most certainly are. Think of it this way. Maybe it’s a good thing that we’ve decided to quit wasting American blood and treasure for no reason and instead have decided to start solving the problem in the most simple and direct way. As George Patton said, “I don’t want you to die for your country, I want you to help the other guy die for his country.” In this case, unless the Iranians keep an all-night crew working at the nuclear weapons complex, it is entirely possible that we could destroy the whole thing while everyone is at home sleeping. Now wouldn’t that be something.

          • Drakken

I look at McCain and Graham with nothing but contempt, they should have been retired long ago. for they have outlived their usefulness. The logistics of sending your mystical magical missiles to Iran are not being deployed, so your worship of your hero Obummer is extremely misplaced and very misguided. Yeah it would be something, but it ain’t gonna happen.

          • Texas Patriot

Drakken: The logistics of sending your mystical magical missiles to Iran are not being deployed…

If the necessary bunker-busting technology is being developed and fabricated secretly (as of course it would be) and if it is going to be delivered by submarine-launched cruise missiles (which is by far the most invisible and effective way of doing it), how would anyone know if the requisite armaments are “being deployed” before the strike actually takes place. Theoretically, the Iranians wouldn’t know that the weapons have been deployed until they actually hit the nuclear weapons complex. Then, of course, the Iranians would know, and the rest of the world would know, but not before.

          • Drakken

Yes and it will rain unicorns and rainbows! Your wishful thinking has no place in what we call the real world. So you go ahead and have a Obummer cheering session for something that won’t happen under his watch, I’ll sit here and shake my head in complete amusement.

          • Texas Patriot

If the mullahs of Iran are thinking like you are, all of you could be in for a big surprise. ;-)

          • Drakken

La la la la la la la la la la la ohhhhhh rainbows la la la la la la la la la la la la la la la ohhhhhhhhh unicorns la la la la la la la la la la la la la la soooooooo prettttyyyyyy.

Drak, I know you’re caught in the loop of hating Obama no matter what he does, but it’s really not the world you want to be in, no matter how good it makes you feel. As Sun Tzu pointed out, all warfare is based on deception. When you’re strong feign weakness, and when you’re weak, feign strength. My guess is that Obama has you fooled right along with the Iranian mullahs, and from my standpoint, that’s just fine. I hope they never wake up, I hope they never catch on, and I hope they never see it coming before their nuclear weapons complex is blown completely out of the ground. But here’s a clue. Even you can be useful in accomplishing the objective. Let me put it to you this way. If the fact that you feel compelled to ridicule and mock the simplest and most direct approach for getting the job done keeps the mullahs from waking up and figuring out what’s going on, even a little bit, you will have served your country well. So, keep up the great work, amigo!

          • Drakken

Your hero Obummer can’t spell Sun Tzu much less have read anything from him. Obummer hasn’t fooled anyone except his fellow leftards who worship the ground that dumbazz walks upon. The truth is Obummer isn’t going to do a goddamn thin about Iran except appease them period. The fact of the matter is you can’t see this inept fool for what he is and he isn’t fooling anyone who has two brain cells to rub together and our enemies know it, another little fact for you, is our military absolute despises and loathes Obummer so good luck with that.

          • Texas Patriot

Perhaps our military will have a higher opinion of Obama if he saves them the trouble of destroying the Iranian nuclear weapons complex. Otherwise, keep up the great work, Drak. We can only hope that the Iranian mullahs are reading your posts!

    • Drakken

Your smoking a massive amount of drugs again, what did I tell you about that.

      • Texas Patriot

        Speak for yourself, Drak. ;-)

  • jack_foobar

Since the Obama Administration doesn’t track IP’s, especially on their donation page, anyone can sign the form. And since it’s the Obama Administration, they’ll ignore it regardless, so it doesn’t matter.

  • Drakken

Giving Kalifornia and New York to the Russians you say? You might be on to something, I would love for the hippys and leftards to live under the Russians for awhile, in a couple years they would do anything to come back to the Union.

    • Tim N

Gee “California” with a ‘K’ How klever.

      • tickletik

        Knew York?

Perhaps this can shed some light on the Crimean vote as well.
