“Put a Big Fence Around Our Country”: Quoting Sheldon Adelson Out of Context

mistanenim-levinski

I’ve been a strong and consistent opponent of amnesty, but this particular quote and the way it’s being misused should be clarified.

I’ve seen anti-immigration outlets use quotes like these to push the claim that American Jews support two different immigration standards for America and for Israel. Considering that the majority of American Jews support having Israel give away vital strategic territory to terrorists, I would say that they’re being largely consistent.

Furthermore even many Israeli businessmen “on the right” benefit from migrant labor the way that their American conservative counterparts who promote amnesty do. That’s why the migrants are there and why Israel suffers from far more unemployment than it should.

While Israel has begun taking steps to deport illegal migrants and bar their entry, the same can be said of many countries.

If you look at Obama’s deportation claims out of context, you might get the impression that he’s serious about the border. The coverage of Israel’s efforts to battle illegal migration has been overhyped on both sides, both the pro and anti-Israel side are pushing the same message for different reasons. That Israel is seriously cracking down.

The perception abroad of what Israel is or isn’t doing, is coming from two type of English language outlets

1. Pro-Netanyahu Israeli newspapers that put out articles in English

2. Anti-Israel international media

Both of those are biased sources. The latter is like reading a New York Times article on the suffering of Mexican migrants crossing into the US. It reflects a political agenda, not reality.

That message hasn’t gotten through in South Tel Aviv where African gangs continue to be a serious problem.

The third organization called HaKilerim (The Killers) was considered the most dangerous and specializes in collecting protection money from Jewish businessmen, Sudanese refugees and Romanian workers, Chinese and Filipinos who settled in the area and opened small businesses, as well as prostitutes and drug addicts. This organization also operates betting parlors, massage parlors, nightclubs, cafes and restaurants. In addition to all those engaged in smartphone robbery, kidnapping cases, pimping, drug dealing in very large quantities, bike theft, running stalls selling ethnic foods and making deals on the street.

Successful foreign criminals wear the best brands, Nike or Adidas, wearing gold watches, necklaces and bracelets, and sunglasses luxury. Many of them resemble the look nicer part of American rappers. While the soldiers are living in apartments and moldy old room south of the city, senior bosses can afford to rent apartments of three and four rooms and frequently travel in taxis.

In southern Tel Aviv, on Neve Shanan Street, as soon as darkness falls, the criminals go out and business owners go on alert. “By five – six pm most shops are closed fearing criminals will steal, rob and take protection money,” says a man who sell shoes in the area. “Whoever stays open gambles with his life. Those who do not pay, the criminals break the windows of their stores and put their knives to his throat, destroying and stealing merchandise. They are not afraid of the police. They have nothing to lose.”

The situation hasn’t changed dramatically since then for the people at ground zero. And it’s a familiar situation to people in Europe and in the Southwest.

Here’s some quick auto translations of more recent articles…

Back to Adelson, I don’t know what he believes Israel should do about African migrants. His paper tends to promote Netanyahu and his government on any and every issue. It’s not clear how much of that is his own opinion and how much of it is simply PR.

However the “fence” quote that is being pushed around is not about illegal immigration.

Here’s how it’s being used by some writers…

Adelson is an especially telling example of the self-interest of businessmen on immigration. His newspaper, Israel Today, the largest newspaper in Israel, is wildly patriotic on immigration (and everything else).

Israel Today has trumpeted the success of the 15-foot razor-wire fence along Israel’s 140-mile border with Egypt, triumphantly noting last August that, for the first time, “no infiltrations were recorded from the Egyptian border, compared to 193 from the same month last year.”

Adelson himself had suggested just such a policy to the Los Angeles Times last year, saying he wanted to “Put a big fence around our country.”

By “our country,” he, of course, meant Israel. In America, he wants illegal immigrants pouring across the border to provide him with an endless supply of cheap labor.

Except that Adelson isn’t talking about immigration. Here’s the context from the original interview.

A lot of Israeli Jews are concerned about what the lack of peace is doing to the Jewish, democratic state. Are you worried that if there is no two-state solution, it will threaten Israel?

That’s completely irrelevant and that’s propaganda-ish. It’s plain stupidity to recognize a partner that wants to kill you [in order to achieve] peace.

So what’s the solution?

Put a big fence around our country and say to the guys over there that the trucks can’t go over our land if they carry weapons, the planes can’t go over our airspace if they carry weapons. Period. [Tell them,] you want to have a state, go do it the way you want.

The “fence” quote refers to keeping terrorists from the Palestinian Authority out. It certainly isn’t about migrants coming through Egypt.

  • Gee

Stopping the illegal immigrants is merely secondary benefit of keeping the terrorists out of our country

    • GSR

Both must be stopped and legal immigration needs to be reduced. Otherwise the US will merely become an employment office for the world’s 7 billion. No heritage, no traditions, no culture. Just a job shop. Pathetic future.

  • GSR

Obama is using a new formula for calculating deportations. He considers “deporting” stopping someone at the border and turning them around. All other administrations never considered this “deportation”. That’s how he makes his claims of being a “deporter”.

    • kikorikid

So, you are saying he lied?

  • RagnarDanneskjold

I don’t understand the Jewish position on immigration. In Israel, illegal aliens are dubbed illegal infiltrators, taking it a step further to the right than America ever did. In America though, it’s open borders, which ticks off Israel’s #1 supporters, conservative Americans. On top of reducing support among their top ally, the very immigration plan also brings in more anti-Semites (foreigners have far higher rates of anti-semitism than white christian Americans) who are mainstreaming anti-semitism. I don’t see what there is to defend in Adelson’s comment. He is pro-Israel and anti-American. Call him out.

    • Rudy

“I don’t understand the Jewish position on immigration”

It’s quite simple really, no non-Jews should be allowed to immigrate to Israel and all white countries should have wide open borders for third world immigrants.

It’s called ethno-nationalism. It means the desire to preserve your own nation and to weaken rival nations.

      • Daniel Greenfield

That must explain why I’ve repeatedly written against amnesty.

    • Daniel Greenfield

There is no Jewish position on immigration. There are the same debates in Israel over it between the right and the left, with the left calling the right ‘Nazis’ for wanting to deport migrants… etc…

I’m not ‘defending’ Adelson’s comment. I’m pointing out that he wasn’t talking about a border fence to keep migrants out.

A misquote is worth being corrected.

  • Schlomo ben Matisyahu

Waitasec! So you mean Jews are OK with a fence across the Mexican desert if it is to keep terrorists out? Cool! Let’s jump on that before they change their mind and come up with some OTHER reason why we cannot defend the borders of OUR country!

    • Daniel Greenfield

Depends on which Jews. Liberals are not okay with fences anywhere.

  • chicagorefugee

You miss the major point of interest here, Daniel When Mr. Adelson mentions “our country,” he means Israel, not the US. That’s very … interesting.

  • Ben Cohen

Greenfield is of course correct, Coulter misquoted Adelson. This does not, however, make Adelson’s (and Bush’s) opinions any less dumb.

While it’s possible that Adelson worries about rising wages, (perhaps his business model depends on it), more likely he thinks he needs to reach out to Hispanics by supporting amnesty.
