Saturday Night Live: “We Don’t Make Fun of Democrats, They Take It Personally”

…and I assume that Lorne Michaels wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of the Dinesh D’Souza special. But he’s being a little disingenuous at best.

Saturday Night Live doesn’t just avoid making fun of Democrats while attacking Republicans because it’s part of a culture war. It lands a few love taps on the Dems and then moves on to its real targets. This is part cultural bias. It is filmed in New York and it’s playing for two audiences, the one in the theater and the water cooler audience of media types that elevated Jon Stewart, and both of those audiences are extremely liberal.

“Republicans are easier for us than Democrats. Democrats tend to take it personally; Republicans think it’s funny. But we’re not sitting here every week going, ‘We’ve really got to do the First Family.’ This week, our cold open is about three big stories. We have Piers Morgan interviewing A-Rod, Chris Christie, and Justin Bieber. We’re doing more of that kind of thing than stuff about Benghazi or the new budget agreement. The country has lost interest in it. I can’t tell you why. It’s no less important, but in some way you can’t do health care more than twice, at which point there’s just nothing left. But Jay Pharoah does a really good Obama.”

Jay Pharaoh is mediocre. He’s just better than the white guy in blackface they had before who played Obama as slightly awkward. Jay Pharaoh occasionally gets close to the real joke that Obama’s routine is fake. But he doesn’t dig too deep into it.

There was a time when Saturday Night Live could do a much more biting take on Democrats (and no, the Obama Paxil ad is nowhere close to that no matter how much conservatives pass it around). Here’s an example.

It’s interesting to note how many cast members from back then either ended up on the right or as more libertarian provocateurs.

““Republicans are easier for us than Democrats. Democrats tend to take it personally; Republicans think it’s funny.”

Shouldn’t that be all the more reason to lampoon the self-important Democrats? Isn’t pomposity one of the easiest things to parody?

I guess it goes without saying that we won’t be seeing any send ups of muslims anytime soon…or ever. Could they at least do a bit on comedic cowardice?

They take it personally means they won’t come on your show, they won’t invite you over for parties or let you come to their fundraisers

Poor Lorne would no longer be the toast of Liberaldom if he started tapping the target rich Left for humor. With Obama’s endless lies, Hillary’s endless pantsuits, Biden’s endless stupidity, Sheila Jackson Lee, Maxine Waters, et al. for inspiration, SNL would actually be funny again.

In the interest of full disclosure, I haven’t watched it since Chris Farley was in the cast.

        • Daniel Greenfield

          Me either

There’s less tolerance for political dissent

  • onecornpone

The country has lost interest in it.

The country has lost interest in SNL…….

    It is a SNORE!

    • veeper

SNL is actually becoming less humorous than that dumbazz broke girls show…..

  • Anukem Jihadi

Yeah, well Saturday Night Live are experts at taking it easy especially when it comes to themselves but that’s not why they go after Republicans.
Flattery costs them nothing even if it’s true but it costs Conservatives exactly what they intend it to.

  • The March Hare

However, you could tell the audience during that show was made up of liberal New York Democrats because they weren’t laughing much at all. The truth hurts.

  • American1969

What ever happened to comedians and shows that weren’t afraid to have some fun and just make fun of everyone? What ever happened to comics that weren’t afraid to tweak the Establishment in fun, even if they were Liberals?
Now everyone is too sensitive or nasty to retain that sense of fun anymore. It’s a shame, because we could all use some good humor and laughs these days.

    • Daniel Greenfield

      Dissent isn’t tolerant these days

  • Phil

I just wonder how, “All in the Family” would fly these days?

    • veeper

obama would have it removed like he did with Jay Leno…..

      • Phil

Wow. Jay? You really think? That never even dawned on me but now that you said it.

        • veeper

NBC was ok with Leno until he started making jokes about obama and michelle at the start of obama second term…..

NBC is stacking their network with liberal/progressive obama butt kissing SNL minions….

Leno is not only the number one late night show ….he’s way ahead of all others….

but, he’s the only one that doesn’t still drool over obama and michelle….

          • randy63ism

Leno is the only one I have any respect for. I love Jay Leno’s Garage. He has a keen understanding of history.

  • veeper

    More BS from SNL…..

they don’t make fun of dems because they are liberal A-holes using a TV show to influence elections and voter opinion….

the biggest liberals are bailing on SNL now that obama has been completely exposed as a failure and a LIAR…..

  • wally

These are very wicked people, not even people, worse than beasts, murdering their own babies snuffing them out in the womb by burning and cutting them into pieces.

  • Veracious_one

SNL doesn’t make fun of Muslims either….

  • Melvin_Udall

Did I miss the link to that quote? That would be helpful before spreading this.

  • John Van Stry

The reason why people ‘don’t care about bengazi’ is because the media (and SNL) don’t talk about it at all, ever. So people don’t hear about it. If they did, they’d care and we just might have a President being impeached.

  • Freedom’sBell

Liberals are just so funny by themselves we don’t need SNL. How could they make Pelosi, Biden, Reid, Waters or even Obama any funnier than they already are.
