Save the Environment from the Socialists

earth-on-fire-global-warmingThe USSR killed 338,000 whales. Its relentless illegal whaling fleets drove the blue whale into extinction in the North Pacific and caused population crashes in a number of other species.

Some have labeled it the worst environmental crime of the century, but it was really just a slow day for the USSR whose other contributions to the environment included destroying one of the four largest lakes in the world (“One of the worst environmental disasters of the world”: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon) and multiple nuclear disasters culminating in Chernobyl (the world’s worst nuclear disaster).

The USSR was determined to show that communism could defeat capitalism and while it couldn’t beat the United States in industrial production, it took home the gold medal for environmental disasters. By the end, 75 percent of its surface water was polluted and its air was among the dirtiest in the world.

The only ones to give the old USSR a run for its money when it came to environmental disasters were their fellow Communists across the border in the People’s Republic of China.

But the only thing that the left does better than wreck economies and the environment is rewrite history. Its three-legged roaches crawl out from underneath the rubble and pretend that nothing ever happened. The left claims historical inevitability while refusing to learn anything from history.

Like mutated cockroaches in Chernobyl, its red-shirted acolytes converged in the People’s Climate March chanting that the only solution for the environment was to replace capitalism with Socialism.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation carried a banner proclaiming that “Climate Change is the Symptom, Capitalism is the Disease, Socialism is the Cure.” The PSI is a Marxist splinter group from the even more insane Workers World Party. It thinks that the collapse of the USSR was the real disaster.

The Communist Party of the United States, whose logo still includes a sickle and gear, announced that it was now concentrating on nature. But it will take a lot of greenwashing to turn those reds green.

The International Socialist Organization, another Marxist group, came promoting its “Eco-socialism” while bearing posters of a globe dripping with oil. “Capitalism is Killing the Planet; Fight for Socialism.”

But when it came to killing the planet by drilling for oil, the Socialists were the champs. Other countries just drilled for oil. The USSR tried to drill for oil using nuclear bombs. It also tried to use nuclear bombs to search for gas and coal making it the only country in the world whose coal was also radioactive.

When it came to drilling for oil, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics was the drunken fisherman trying to catch a trout with dynamite. This was, not coincidentally, a favorite hobby of its Party bosses.

But the USSR wasn’t completely neglectful of the environment. It also tried to use nuclear bombs to create holes for storing toxic waste. There’s no doubt that if the USSR could have thought of a way to improve the environment by exploding a bunch of nuclear bombs, it would have done it.

The Workers World Party showed up handing out literature calling for a ban on fracking. The WWP won’t be carrying that same literature to its friends in the Chinese government which leads the world in coal mining and oil pipeline disasters and which has already managed to kill people using fracking.

The People’s Republic even figured out how to kill people using solar panels. Solar panel pollution production has already killed large numbers of fish and local villagers are suffering from kidney and liver damage. It takes a Socialist and a five-year-plan to figure out how to kill people with solar panels.

Leftists in New York marched under the hashtag #FloodWallStreet claiming that only stopping capitalism would end the climate crisis. There’s no doubt that Socialists are really good at flooding things.

Soviet and Chinese dams failed more often than they worked. When the dams weren’t failing, then their Socialist planners were building pointless canals that didn’t work. The Stalin White Sea Canal killed 100,000 workers and can only accommodate small boats. Wall Street could have made it work without piling up a mountain of corpses. China’s Banqiao Dam however took home the prize for killing the most people in any dam failure in history; 171,000. But they did have the help of their fellow Soviet Socialists.

China’s current Three Gorges Dam has displaced over a million people and flooded 13 cities, 140 towns and 1,350 villages. There’s no way the capitalists of Wall Street could compete with that flooding.

The Revolutionary Communist Party wore stickers reading, “Capitalism is Destroying the Planet… We Need Revolution.” As Maoists however they ought to know that if anyone is going to destroy the planet, it will be them. Mao’s industrial and agricultural experiments very nearly destroyed China, killing tens of millions of people with a famine caused by his attempts at environmental engineering.

Today China isn’t just wrecking its own environment, but is also colonizing Africa with disastrous industrial projects. Chad recently handed China a $1.2 billion bill for illegal dumping of crude oil. Gabon has accused China of polluting its country. If anyone is going to destroy the world, the smart money is still on China which has the capacity and the determined rigidity to make it happen.

All these Socialist environmental disasters happened because of central planning. The key to Socialism is also a formula for endless human and environmental disasters. The USSR and Communist China saw human resources and natural resources as fuel for their vast centrally planned economies. It was capitalism without responsibility, human rights or independent points of views. And the left is determined to recreate these same environmental disasters in the name of the environment.

Socialist governments in the United States and California have already created a man-made drought.  Warmunism in the UK led to massive flooding there this year. Environmental disasters created in the name of the environment are a reality as the same inflexible collectivist bureaucracies that wrecked the environment for industrial Socialism are wrecking it all over again for eco-Socialism.

The combination of rigid ideology, bureaucratic guidelines and experts with no real life experience led to droughts and floods in the USSR and the PRC. Now the same combination of big plans, clueless experts and mindless slogans are creating droughts and floods in the US and the EU.

The ideologues of the USSR and the PRC believed that nothing could go wrong if they drew their inspiration from Lenin, Stalin and Mao. The new ideologues are convinced that they have to be right because they are “on the side of the environment”; as if the air, the sky and the sea have a “side”.

Environmental disasters aren’t caused by capitalists or communists. They are caused by people who don’t think about the consequences of their actions.

The left has long since proven that it is incapable of thinking about consequences in any terms other than those of its ideology. A factory owner can recognize a toxic waste spill. A Socialist is incapable of recognizing that his ideology’s plan caused a spill. He will deny that it exists, denounce the witnesses, accuse critics of waging war on his ideology and then spend the next twenty years making it worse.

The planet doesn’t need saving from capitalists. It needs saving from Socialists.

The environmental devastation wrought by Soviet Industrialization became apparent with the fall of the Soviet Union.

The Aral Sea is now more or less a dried up salt pan, there are several areas (Chernobyl is but one) that are contaminated with radiation, and there are countless places that have been contaminated with assorted chemicals.

Some of those areas are still populated, and people in those areas have been suffering a whole manner of ill health from the contamination.

When it came to management of the environment, the Soviets earned themselves the grade of “epic fail”.

Therefore, it can be concluded that Socialists are even better when it comes to ruining the earth and making areas uninhabitable due to toxic chemical and radiation contamination…

    • swemson

It seems that capitalism, is always taking the blame for the failures of socialism. Why is that so?

Clearly the Socialists are FAR better at lying to the people than the prime movers, who are actually responsible for creating virtually all of the wealth being enjoyed by modern civilization, are about telling the truth.

When I first read Atlas Shrugged, in the early 1960′s while in high school, I knew right away that Ayn Rand’s moral and ethical principals were correct, however I never thought that I’d see her forecast of what was coming in the decades to follow, actually come true so soon.

It’s time we took her advice a bit more seriously, and started to go on strike.

  • truebearing

In the long list of failures contained in this article, the Left saw each problem as one that could be simply solved with power. Can’t catch a fish? Throw a stick of dynamite in the water. Need oil? Explode nuclear weapons underground to somehow force it up. Need a waste dump? Blow a hole in the ground with a nuclear bomb. The Left will do anything for power, then use it in stupid, heedless, sadistic ways. They seem to think the mere exercise of enough power will make anything work. Someday, Government Motors will announce their exciting, new, improved, high rpm, square wheel. In the past the square wheel failed because of a lack of horsepower.

The Left didn’t join, then usurp the civil rights movement, women’s rights, or the environmental movement because they were true believers. They saw these movements as leverage points for power, not to mention great disguises. After the true environmentalists were driven out of the movement by the parasitic Left, environmentalism was converted into a hot-air-powered generator of fear. The global warming/climate change scam is a transnational cause designed to instill irrational fear. Evil always rules by fear, and If the Left succeeds in converting enough fear into power, the environment will be soon forgotten. They will indulge themselves with the arbitrary exercise of raw power to destroy things and people, including the environment, with every depraved whim.

Small comfort then that the Left will inevitably fail. They are paving the way for the carrion eaters of Islam.

    • Daniel_Greenfield

The left is entirely focused on outcomes. It sanctifies its ideology as ideal and is therefore uninterested in process.

The ends always justify the means leading to complete horrors.

      • truebearing

Yes, and it’s no coincidence that the Left and the Muslims both subscribe to the great anti-ethic, the ends justify the means, and it is no surprise that their anti-ethical operating principle is wrong. The ends can’t justify the means because the ends are conditioned by the means. The ends cannot be isolated from the means. The ends have to be justified on their merits and so do the means. If one is evil, both are evil. This is yet more fundamental dishonesty and magical thinking on their parts.

There was another story — definitely in National Geographic — about the drying up of the Aral Sea, also lavishly illustrated with photographs.

The real ambition of the warm-mongers to the destruction of the Western economy. While they promote questionable science, the world ecosystems are being destroyed and species are becoming extinct in record numbers.

Because of the warm-mongers, the real threats to the environment never make it to the front page. There is work to be done, and we are not even talking about it yet.

    • Daniel_Greenfield

I am a bit late to this discussion, but I think you will appreciate this little reading list I have been compiling for a few years now.

Blacksmith Institute: The World’s Worst Polluted Places

Elwood Carlson and Mikhail S. Bernstam: Population and Resources Under the Socialist Economic System

Marshall Goldman: The Spoils of Progress: Environmental Pollution in the Soviet Union

Philip Pryde: Environmental Resources and Constraints in the Former Soviet Republics

Paul Josephson: Environmental Justice and Sustainability in the Former Soviet Union

Walter Lacqueur: The Dream That Failed: Reflections on the Soviet Union

Murray Feshbach and Alfred Friendly: Ecocide in the USSR: Health and Nature under Siege

David Horowitz quotes Feshbach and Friendly thus:

“……In the name of progress, the Soviets devastated the environment to a degree unknown in other industrial states. More than 70% of the Soviet atmosphere was polluted with five times the permissible limit of toxic chemicals, and thousands of square miles of the Soviet land mass was poisoned by radiation. Thirty percent of all Soviet foods contained hazardous pesticides and six million acres of productive farmland were lost to erosion. More than 130 nuclear explosions had been detonated in European Russia for geophysical investigations to create underground pressure in oil and gas fields, or just to move earth for building dams. The Aral Sea, the world’s largest inland body of water, was dried up as the result of a misguided plan to irrigate a desert. Soviet industry operated under no controls and the accidental spillage of oil into the country’s eco-systems took place at the rate of nearly a million barrels a day…….”

        Also a very significant work:

Mikhail S. BERNSTAM: “Comparative Trends In Resource Use and Pollution In Market and Socialist Economies”

Included in “The State Of Humanity”, ed. Julian SIMON

Worth buying or borrowing the book, to get it. Someone needs to scan it and put it online.

Interesting how you bring up the Siberian Railway. From what it sounds like, I’ll bet many zeks who worked on that line would have eagerly traded places with the Chinese laborers who worked on the Canadian Pacific Rail line that extends across Canada and is still in use to this day.

While how the Chinese laborers were treated both during and after the construction of the CPR was an injustice (See also: Head Tax, Exclusion Act), it had nothing on the Soviet treatment of their convict and political prisoner labor…

      • tagalog

Yes, the freedom to leave when you’re being mistreated seems to make a big difference in one’s job choices. Also actually getting paid for your labor helps.

  • smendler

It needs saving from both. Both socialist and capitalist economies depend on industrial models of production, the exploitation of the environment, and a general attitude of seeing humankind as being on top of, rather than as part of, nature.

The 19th-century thories of neither Adam Smith nor Karl Marx can deal with our present situation.

That’s why I joined the Greens years ago: we need some new isms.

    • Daniel_Greenfield

Being part of nature is synonymous with living in caves. We are on top of nature because we choose to be. If you don’t want to be on top of nature, join the middle ranks of the food chain by hunting your own food (not with industrially produced firearms mind you) and living in a cave.

Let the cougar have a good shot at eating you. Welcome death at the ripe old age of 49.

More on top than your average indigenous tribe living close to nature.

And we could do a lot better when it comes to natural disasters if we were allowed to engage in the kind of preventative interventions that would give environmentalists hysterical fits.

        • http://www.apollospeaks.com/ ApolloSpeaks

Any number of things. But guess what? As the population grows and prosperity increases, we’re going to need more broomsticks. Gonna need more houses. Limbaugh speaks wisdom that most on the left refuse to think of. Capitalism replants. Socialism confiscates the wood.

And the modern forest industry has done a lot more for the forests than any environmental movement can dream.

I’d rather buy lumber made in Canada or America, from where I know that forestry practices and environmental laws have to be respected, than from a place like China where we know they would recklessly turn their terrain into wasteland just to make a few more Yuan…

    • tagalog

You forget how interestingly the law of supply and demand fits in with conservation of natural resources. In command systems, there is nothing other than human demand to rule exploitation of nature. In capitalist systems, the lowering and raising of prices due to the interplay of supply and demand brings about conservation of resources for the sake of maximizing profit.

    • UCSPanther

I’d say that recklessly poisoning an area with heavy metals, toxic organic chemicals and radiation to the point of rendering it uninhabitable is infinitely far worse than any kind of sustainable forestry…

A minor point in regards to the Aral Sea, at one time the fourth largest lake in the world. In that case, it was not neglect or incompetence that caused it to shrivel up to the relative puddle that exists today. It was deliberate and intentional.

Why? Because the someone in the Soviet Union decided that they should become a large-scale producer of cotton. Unlike the American South, which is like the perfect place to grow cotton, the semi-arid regions of what is now Kazakstan and Uzbekistan don’t have a reliable amount of rainfall necessary.

So, the plan was to divert the two rivers that fed the Aral Sea for irrigation purposes. Since these rivers were the only things that kept the water level up, the landlocked sea was expected to eventually evaporate away. As said, this was known and expected. What about the inhabitants of the area? Probably the Soviet apparatchik who oversaw the plan didn’t think they mattered or it was someone else’s problem. Not like people ever really mattered in the Socialist Paradise.

With such constant failures, even a dunce would have learned from their mistakes by now, but the Leftist is a special type of dunce that makes even a village idiot look smart!

I can liken to someone who insists on sticking a butter knife into electrical outlets no matter how many times they get zapped silly for their trouble.

  • Robin Whitlock

I seem to have stumbled into a mass reunion of the turbocapitalist right who can’t distinguish between socialism and communism. Not all left political parties and activists lean towards the soviet bloc, so this is just the usual sickening propaganda against the left. Entirely predictable unfortunately. So, environmental protection is safe in the hands of the right is it? Utter lunacy. You’ve had long enough to prove that and you’ve failed demonstrably.

    • objectivefactsmatter

Is that how you really feel? Thanks for keeping us posted.

I’ve got some “turboing” to do, which includes setting fire to oil wells and whatnot so I’ll check in with you later.

PS – The USSR was a “socialist republic.”

    • Softly Bob

You people have also failed demonstrably that whatever you call it, Socialism or Communism, it still never works!
Environmental protection has always suffered far worse under Leftism and no greater a teacher than history herself has proven that – (Aral Sea, Chernobyl, etc) but still, goldfish like yourself can never learn that lesson, because you are destined to forever repeat the same mistakes, and what’s more you lie about it.
Save your diatribe for people who are stupid enough to believe you.
You sir, are just another puffed up imbecile, clueless about reality, clueless about history and clueless about just about everything.

      • Robin Whitlock

Laughable really, you lot are so predictable. This is what a US environment correspondent wrote in The Guardian in 2010 http://www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/jan/12/climate-change-greed-environment-threat Enough said really, except to add that US-driven right wing corporate greed aided by climate change denialism has driven our planet to the very edge of global environmental disaster through climate change, the effects of which we are already experiencing all over the world. Wildfires, drought and floods in the US ring any bells? Hurricane Katrina? Hurricane Sandy? You are the imbecile Softly Bob, and deserve to be justifiably treated as such.

        • UCSPanther

Oh sure. Capitalists caused Chernobyl, a place that has a live core of congealed uranium and plutonium still simmering away and bathing the area in gamma rays and other harmful ionizing radiation, where no one can live due to said radiation, and where even the soldiers assigned to guard the cordon don’t dare set foot inside…

          • Robin Whitlock

Congratulations, you’ve just admirably expressed an Eco-socialist argument against nuclear. I could hardly have put it better myself. Good to see the US offshore wind programme progressing though….

          • UCSPanther

If you must know, this article is pointing out that communists have zero credibility when it comes to criticizing us “capitalists” when it comes to environmental record.

And its not just Chernobyl either that the Soviet Union has left as its environmental legacy….

But then again, you probably are fond of “going KGB” on anyone who so much as expresses even the slightest doubt on Global Warming…

        • Softly Bob

No my friend, you’re the imbecile.
What, we’ve never had hurricanes or floods before? You pathetic moron. They happen regardless. Guess what? The Gulf of Mexico is a hurricane zone!
What about the predictions that never came true. Twenty five years ago, they said that Manhattan would be under water, the ice caps would have melted and polar bears would be extinct.
Guess what else clown? It didn’t happen.
Idiots like you are just so gullible. They even changed the name from ‘Global Warming’ to ‘Climate change’. How vague is that?
You Global Warmists are the biggest suckers on the Planet. I wouldn’t care about that except for the fact that you expect everybody else to pay for it. But the truth is coming out now. Meteorologists everywhere are now claiming that they fiddled the stats.
By the way, the Guardian (Leftist rag) is renowned for false prophecies and false predictions. This is the same paper that in 1998 claimed that a World economic crash by 2003 at the very latest would destroy capitalism once and for all and usher in a new era of World collectivism.
          Didn’t happen!
It also claimed that in 2008, climare change would be so bad that Britain would have a Mediterranean climate and that lorida would be desert.
          Guess what, donkey?
          Didn’t happen.
