Speechwriter: Obama Didn’t Lie About ObamaCare, He Just Didn’t Understand How It Worked

obama liar

The Obama approval ratings are apparently bad enough that they’re going with the, “He’s not a liar, he’s just stupid” defense.

At an AEI event on the secrets of the State of the Union speech, former President Obama speechwriter Jon Lovett acknowledged that the “keep your health care plan” pledge didn’t turn out to be as accurate as the administration planned.

That’s PR speak for, “It was a complete and total lie from beginning to end.” How accurate did the administration hope that a claim that had no basis in fact would be on a scale from one to minus zero?

If Obama were to accidentally nuke Cleveland, PR speak would be, “Obama regrets not contributing to Cleveland’s net development as much as he wishes he could.”

I can tell you that that that statement that that that about the way the law was work was something that was perhaps not examined closely enough at the time, but it was never, ever something that was viewed as not being true but something that should be said anyway. It was viewed as something that largely described the underlying structure of this bill and that is absolutely true.

Remember kids, this man is a speechwriter. Don’t try this at home.

Lovett isn’t saying that it was viewed as “true” in the sense that it described people actually being able to keep their plans and their doctors, but true in some deeper structural sense that wouldn’t actually allow them to keep their plans and their doctors.

No wait. I’m sorry. That “largely” would do that. Because there wasn’t enough PR speak or enough lawyerisms in that sentence already. Between the double negatives and contradictory phrasing, that entire paragraph has enough weaseling to kill an entire barn of chickens.

You know, these are people that thought they would be able to keep their plans because the president said so and I think the president made this point himself. That’s, that is, that is just the reality of the situation and I think it’s unfortunate that at that ensnared more people than they thought.

Let’s walk that gibberish back for a moment.

The upshot of this is that Obama repeatedly claimed something that wasn’t true because

A. He was lying

B. He was incompetent

Those are really the options here. Considering that the regulations were written to kill the maximum number of plans, the buck stops with him either way.

Now Lovett wants to claim that Obama wasn’t out to destroy everyone’s health plans, but that he just had no idea that health care isn’t magic. That’s fine.

It’s not like he occupies some important responsible position or championed the legislation that was responsible for this mess.

Thank heaven for small mercies. The pain of the last four years of this administration and the ensuing years of pain will be more tolerable if their lunacy and moral bankruptcy continues to be exposed for all to see. Well, too bad the world at large has to witness it, but, most nations of the world of gone through lunatic periods. Pride will always, always, always, always come before a fall. The fall of individuals not the fall of our great nation. I have hope, at least.

And de Blasio is outlawing classes for gifted children, who, say, might know the difference between dreams and reality. If we may make it to 2016 without a military coup on behalf of Obama, I will be surprised.

    • A Z

A military coup in support of Obama?

  • carltjohnson

No, it didn’t lie, it just didn’t tell the truth. Even “A Hole and chief” as a low IQ unconscious humanoid knew when it was deceiving the public. I call bull, It knew and if you think otherwise…the check is in the mail.

  • laura r

sounds like a jackie mason joke.

  • cxt

I’m not so sure that “incompetent” does not scare me more than “lie.”
A lie is bad enough but to think that the people running things are really that clueless would be……I think….more terrifying than “smart but sinister.”
Even sinister people need things to work at a certain basic level. Incompetent people however………….

  • truebearing

Given the abject stupidity of Obama’s writers, and Obama, I’m starting to realize just how smart those teleprompters really are.

America is on the verge of becoming a Cretinocracy.

    • darnellecheri

I don’t think they are stupid. Admittedly, it appears more like calculating and sinister, but not stupid. It is very difficult to keep account of every lie and deception unless it is obsessively micromanaged, and even then, humans can’t keep up with the seepage.

      • truebearing

I was joking, kind of, but they do make themselves look stupid, even intentionally sometimes. So why do any Americans support this nexus of stupidity, dishonesty, derangement, and evil?

        • hiernonymous

Because all of the truehearted, wise, and intelligent people are apparently devoting themselves to commenting on fringe political sites instead of public service.

          • Drakken

Please, Please, Please, enlighten us and inform us of exactly how things should be done? I am truly interested to know? Other than just tell conservatives that they are bad, evil, and are the problem, so please impart your vast knowledge and experience into the conversation.

          • hiernonymous

            Don’t sulk. It’s unbecoming.

If you criticize multiculturalism you are definitely xenophobic. Or nationalistic. Or both.

          • hiernonymous

“If you criticize multiculturalism you are definitely xenophobic. Or nationalistic. Or both.”

            Do you think so? Interesting.

          • truebearing

Why are you here? You don’t fit your own description of Frontpage commenters.

Public service? We already have way too many people devoting themselves to public parasitism. Why don’y you spend some time learning how wealth is created and why wealth creation has to be done in the privare sector, and why it is essential for an economy to sustain itself. Here’s a hint: governments pay all of those public service goldbrickers with revenues generated by taxing the wealth creators.

          • hiernonymous

            “Why are you here?”

Doing my best to keep you honest.

          • objectivefactsmatter

            Why can’t anyone do both?

          • hiernonymous

I don’t see any reason they can’t. I see no indication that they do.

          • objectivefactsmatter

Not that it would be obvious to you.

          • hiernonymous

            If you say so.

          • pen44

            And, the troll arrives!!!

Already debunked. . . .PolitiFact Says Obama’s Lie About Lying is a Lie

President Obama gave a speech to campaign organization, Organizing for Action. During his speech, he suggested the media had been misreporting the “you can keep your insurance, period” pledge he had made. Two days later, PolitiFact reviewed the President’s statement, giving it their worst possible “pants on fire” rating.

  • sgfan

Did he understand the statement he made, “if you like your healthcare plan, you can keep it”? Did he understand “If you like your doctor, you can keep him”? I think he knew all along he was lying. He wanted this bill and this massive transfer of wealth to take place at all costs, including bold-faced lies.

  • Thomas J.Stratford

A bald faced liar, or completely inept…YOU MAKE THE CALL!

    • Owen_Kellogg

      I vote for both.

  • Owen_Kellogg

As far as competence goes, Obama couldn’t lead ants to a picnic. As for truth, Obama is like the little boy who always lied. Once he got caught telling the truth, but he lied his way out of it.

‘Truth’ is a virtue that liberals simply do not value. So it really doesn’t matter what Obama said as long as his ends were achieved. For an Administration that will never let a crisis go to waste, their goals have been dependent upon creating crisis after crisis for the entire duration of his Presidency.

    • pen44

I agree, Owen! And, I also vote for both!! If someone is completely out of their depth, totally incompetent, as 0 is, he has to depend on others for everything. He’s not capable of leading…Jarrett & company might rule, but none of them can lead. They are so busy setting up destructive initiatives, programs, regulations, that they have not thought anything through to the consequences, so they wind up causing crisis after crisis, failure after failure, which they then have to cover up. Of course, they cannot admit that their harebrained concoctions didn’t/don’t work, so they lie….and one lie leads to another, and on&on&on&on it goes. It’s a circus that is quite tragic for the country!!

  • Opinionated_Vogon

I ventured over to weaselzippers to watch the video. First observation: our stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure President has a a stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure Speechwriter.

Second observation: He uses the same Obama straw man fallacy tactic to excuse the incompetence of his boss.

He sets up his fallacy with “this change is a very very positive thing that will help many many millions of people”. Yes, but it has harmed even more for a net loss. Next the meat of his fallacy: “you look at any major conservative proposal on healthcare and it would upend the market in ways far more ah ah ah ah ah um disasterous for people in their current plans than anything that that that Obamacare would do, that there are changes that many conservatives would like to make that are pretty big for instance getting rid of the employer subsidy or a few other big changes that have often been on the conservative agenda”.

The GOP didn’t promise over and over that you could keep your plan. They didn’t repeatedly lie to everyone and cram down this fascist takeover.

To him, if the GOP was honest and said: “we want to end the employer mandate and disconnect health care from your job making it portable and offsetting the extra expense with tax credits” its the same or worse than their package of lies?

    Cheers,

    O.V.

Obama supporters will go hysterical over this well sourced list of 545 examples of his lying, lawbreaking, corruption, cronyism, etc. http://danfromsquirrelhill.wordpress.com/2013/08/15/obama-252/

  • SDLakeshore

    False dichotomy? A and B.

  • SoCalMike

He wasn’t lying. The “Smartest guy in the world” is just stupid.

  • poetcomic1

Not only is he both a liar and incompetent he is not even a very competent liar.

  • objectivefactsmatter

Translation: Someone somewhere in theory can keep their health plan. Don’t blame me if you’re not on the list. Period.

    • pen44

Exactly, objectivefactsmatter, exactly…..somewhere in the universe, it might be true….just not here on earth, or in America!!

      • objectivefactsmatter

They want to make it sound like typical campaign exaggeration when clearly he was lying through his teeth.

Why would you worry about the ACA when POTUS guarantees the law won’t remove you from your policy? Sure you might lose it for some other reason but at least the law and its regulations won’t force the policy to be canceled. Period.

        They’re still lying.

        • pen44

Denying, obfuscating, making excuses & blaming others for whatever, are just different ways of LYING, objectivefactsmatter. 0 has got lying down to an art form, it’s almost like lying is a plank in today’s Democratic Party platform. They just automatically lie…….
