Spike Lee Lives in $32 Mil Manhattan Townhouse, Complains about White People Gentrifying Brooklyn

This is Spike Lee’s $32 million Manhattan townhouse bought with resentment money. Known as Hatch House, it was owned by William Vanderbilt, Gypsy Rose Lee and a host of other famous names.

Lee, who turns resentment into money faster than even Jesse Jackson and Don Rickles, returned from obscurity to complain about white people taking over Fort Greene and gentrifying it and whatnot. Spike Lee doesn’t appear to realize that white people lived in Brooklyn before black people did, but why bother with the facts.

Movie director Spike Lee had a lot to say about the gentrification of his home borough of Brooklyn and he’s blaming ‘hipsters’ for changing the neighborhoods.

Lee, who was addressing an audience at Pratt Institute during a Black History Month event on Tuesday night, became irate when an audience member said there were benefits to gentrification.

“They just move in the neighborhood… You’ve got to have some respect you just can’t come in to where people have a culture… and you come in and knock {expletive} down and change because you’re here? Get out of here. You can’t do that.”

I’m sure the former residents of Brooklyn neighborhoods that went Ghetto felt the same way. New York City changes. Nobody gets to lock down a neighborhood, though housing projects tend to do that. Just because you moved in somewhere 50 or 75 years ago, doesn’t make it your permanent property.

Gentrification is the process of neighborhoods changing and adapting in the natural human tide of the city.

Nah. You can’t do that. You can’t just come in the neighborhood and start bogarting and say, like you’re motherfuckin’ Columbus and kill off the Native Americans. Or what they do in Brazil, what they did to the indigenous people. You have to come with respect. There’s a code. There’s people.

And there were people living there before Spike Lee’s father too. How much respect did they have for them? Now Lee wants to bogart the neighborhood for all time.

I’m for democracy and letting everybody live but you gotta have some respect. You can’t just come in when people have a culture that’s been laid down for generations and you come in and now shit gotta change because you’re here? Get the fuck outta here. Can’t do that!

It had to change when black people became a majority. Now it has to change again. Welcome to hope and change.

You can’t just — here’s another thing: When Michael Jackson died they wanted to have a party for him in motherfuckin’ Fort Greene Park and all of a sudden the white people in Fort Greene said, “Wait a minute! We can’t have black people having a party for Michael Jackson to celebrate his life. Who’s coming to the neighborhood? They’re gonna leave lots of garbage.”

Shouldn’t black people have a party for a black musician instead?

Hypocrisy seem to be mainly in the the realm of race baiters and libtards!Too bad they are blind to it. It makes them look very foolish and selfish.

  • glpage

Too many people on the left forget to engage their brain before their mouth takes off.

Rockers and jazzers still write songs about her. I don’t know about Helen’s face, but I bet she was a heck of a tease.

  • cxt

    Ok…….lets examine Mr. Lee’s logic.
When Brooklyn was a mainly white section of the city what do you think Spike Lee would have said if the white residents that had been there for generations stated:
“You have to have respect, you just can’t come in where people have a culture”
He would, no doubt, have claimed racism……and he would have been right.
Odd that he fails to see his own illogic and his own racism.
Or perhaps not so odd in that the Left is well-known for its double standards.

    • Daniel Greenfield

It only works one way. Once you go black, the neighborhood is never go back. I’ve seen that same logic at work in different races and neighborhoods. It’s racism and entitlement.

  • nomoretraitors

I think the couple whose address he mistakenly tweeted out should sue him for everything he’s worth

    • Daniel Greenfield

Or he could just trade houses with them. His looks nice.

      • CaoMoo

        But the taxes would suck

        • Daniel Greenfield

        • CowboyUp

It’s funny you would mention that. When I first read the article it occurred to me that he probably got his property tax bill not long before this rant.. I wouldn’t be surprised if he got a tax break for living in a ‘distressed’ neighborhood. That’s easy for a person that can afford half decent security.

      • CowboyUp

I bet it is, but it might be a historic landmark, considering who all has owned it. The maintenance on those can get extreme. These days they might do best to sell it as soon as they got it.

        • Daniel Greenfield

No doubt. Just ask Annie Leibowitz.

  • kasandra

There’s that unlimited sense of entitlement and grievance that the left has inculcated in the black community for decades. You know, my folks’ house where I grew up was in a neighborhood of a Detroit suburb. Black people came in where, to paraphrase Mr. Lee, there was a culture that had been laid down for generations and changed stuff, alright. Threatened to kill my mother. Broke into my folk’s house twice. Defaulted on mortgages in neighboring houses causing them to be taken over by HUD and boarded up destroying the value of the remaining houses including my folks’. (Sure looks great when you’re trying to sell your house to have neighboring houses with windows boarded up and “HUD Property” painted in red on the plywood. I’m sure Mr. Lee was all upset about that. What a stupid, over-compensated jerk this guy is.

but he’s an artist, don’t you know?

      • bodica

He’s a plagiarist, as some of us know!

  • Veracious_one

” ….and you come in and knock {expletive} down and change because you’re here? Get out of here. You can’t do that.”
yeah, that’s right!, why improve the neighborhood when you can come in and turn it into a worse ghetto…like we did….

  • CowboyUp

Silly me, I thought tolerance was a two way street. Black racial bigots don’t seem to realize they sound just like white racial bigots. The only difference seems to be that black racial bigotry is socially acceptable.
There’s something else that bemuses me about ‘gentrification’ outrage. I bet in the past Spike has B&M’d about whitey neglecting his neighborhood to make it a slum, redlining, businesses not opening up outlets there or few white people living there, because they’re racist and want to keep the Black man down. Then when they do start moving in, opening businesses, renovating, cleaning up litter, and increasing property values, people like spike get even more upset, angry, and hostile.

    • CaoMoo

Spike Lee is an Ass plain and simple. Always was always will be no point in paying any attention to him.

      • Nanook8

It is sad, for all of Spike Lee’s success, he is still a bitter, angry man.

        • CowboyUp

Some people aren’t happy unless they are unhappy. Spike seems like one of those. Leftists are often like that, or people like that gravitate to leftism.

        • bodica

He may be ‘successful,’ but it was on the backs of gifted white writers/performers/artists whom he kicked off the ladder even as they boosted him up!

      • CowboyUp

Yep, though the less polite (mea culpa), would use a very similar two syllable word, for precision of course. I was taught early all colors, shapes, and sizes can suffer from rectal cranial inversion. Mentalities cross culture, religion, and race, and people the world over are familiar with his.

  • LiberalsHateUs!

And Spike Lee is purifying Manhattan.

  • Alex Live

This jerk lives in the mansion, chukcha go back to Congo or Kenya and lecture your brothers. What movies he made recently, I didn’t watch his previous movies, his movies probably about equality and revolution, ha,ha,ha.

    • Daniel Greenfield

The last one anyone heard of was Malcolm X

  • spyeatte

Spike Lee is a clueless bozo. He has been rich for so long he has lost touch with reality.

  • UCSPanther

A bit like if “Emperor” Jean Bedel Bokassa was complaining about colonialism during his ill-fated reign over CAR back in 1970s.

  • Seek

Hey, don’t drag one of my heroes, Don Rickles, into this. The guy still has his mojo.

Spike Lee has nice slave quarters in the plantation called Manhattan.

He isn’t willing to live in the ‘hood anymore.

  • objectivefactsmatter

Critical Race Theory drives all of these inane victim rants from Lee and others like him.

  • edlancey

Spike Lee has a nice house. I’m sure 200 years ago his “House” ancestors lived in a nice house as well.

  • marco polo

If Obama had a tortoise it would look like Spike

Friend of mine used to wait tables at a coffee shop frequented by Lee Snr. He said Lee never tipped. Another friend murdered not too far away. It’s a nabe desperately in need of gentrification. Lee’s commie ethos just wants equal opportunity misery for the non elites – whose talents are robbed and plagiarised by mediocrities like him.
