What Samantha Power Forgot About the Soviet Role in the Holocaust

Daniel Greenfield, a Shillman Journalism Fellow at the Freedom Center, is a New York writer focusing on radical Islam. He is completing a book on the international challenges America faces in the 21st century.

Molotov-Ribbentrop

Samantha Power, who once discussed invading Israel, decided to use the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz to link it to the Syrian Civil War.

“In 1945, Russian soldiers liberated Auschwitz. Sixty-nine year later, if the United Nations is to live up to the noble purposes for which it was founded, the world again needs Russia to use its influence, this time, to ensure that food reaches the desperate and starving people imprisoned in besieged Homs, Yarmouk, the Damascus suburbs, and elsewhere,” she added.

Considering that much of Syria thinks that the Holocaust was a good idea that didn’t go far enough and has tried to repeat it, the linkage is inappropriate at best.

As is Power’s invocation of the Soviets as liberators. The Red Army did indeed take Auschwitz, but the Soviet Union’s pact with Nazi Germany had helped make Auschwitz possible.

The left worked hard to revise history and transform the USSR into the stalwart anti-fascist resistance with the Allies as virtual collaborators, when it had actually been the other way around.

The Soviet Union then spent decades minimizing and denying the Holocaust. And toward the end of his life, Stalin had allegedly planned to carry out his own Holocaust.  The Red Holocaust used the Doctor’s Plot as its Kristalnacht, it was meant to scale up to riots that would culminate in mass deportations to Siberian camps.

Stalin’s plan was aborted by his own death, but in his lifetime, his purges had killed large numbers of Jews. And the killings did not stop with his death. Khrushchev continued targeting Jews leading to protests from the European left. The death toll under Khruschev and subsequent Soviet leaders decreased, but never stopped.

The Soviet Union was not torn down the way that Nazi Germany was and its intelligence operations remained intact. The process of assembling the data on the victims is still ongoing and faces challenges. But it’s worth noting that even in the USSR’s death throes, one of the three civilians killed in the final coup, Ilya Krichevsky, was Jewish.

Auschwitz wasn’t liberated because Stalin wanted to stop the killing. The killings would continue. Samantha Power is inappropriately hijacking Jewish history to promote a regime that engaged in mass murder on behalf of terrorist groups that seek to murder Jews.

Cass Sunstein, Samantha Power’s husband, was born into a Jewish family.

I know he is a Leftists, but cannot he be objective about some Jewish history and can he not pull his wife aside and say “You got your history wrong, you better research the topic better”?

I know my spouse defends their home country, when I say something like they have a pollution problem.

Cass is whipped or he is onboard with revisionism.

    • Daniel Greenfield

Cass is more leftist than Jewish

      • Jim

        Unfortunately.

I pointed out the air pollution to my spouse and their reflexive response was to defend their homeland and ethnic group. This after their family blamed a sibling’s eye ailment on the smog 2 years previously. But Cass is different. His Jewish heritage is an impediment to him.

The Roman Catholic Church excommunicates people. The Amish shuns people. Maybe Jewish groups need to say Cass is anything but Jewish. It would not mean anything measurable immediately but it would be great political theater.

        • Daniel Greenfield

Leftists are different. And leftist Jews tend to have less allegiance to the Jewish people because if you’re Norwegian, then you have a country. But if you’re a non-Israeli Jews then your whole identity is based on religion/ethnic solidarity that leftist politics displace.

    • Chiron_Venizelos

Bill Maher also comes to mind.
As a man of faith, I cannot help but feel pity for their souls, but for the present, I find it sad to think how miserable they must be when, in the darkness of their solitude, the reality of their betrayal comes to visit them.

    • mackykam

I’m certain he married her to cover up his Jewish roots. I’ll even bet dollars to donuts that when they argues she calls him an ‘effen’ Jew! He agrees and poof, end of argument!

Lest we forget: Stalin ‘repurposed’ Nazi concentration camps, when as where convenient for the NKVD.
Beyond that, “Bloodlands” and “Unholy Trinity” make a strong case that NKVD ops inspired the N@#&s/ SD, for even the NY Times whitewashed the Holomordor.
The weight of the evidence is that Beria took down Stalin with Warfarin. It’s the kind of agent that one can eat an equal portion of… only to ingest the antidote in a timely manner.
Used as rat poison to this day, its symptoms perfectly describe the final torments of Koba. (A brain hemorrhage being the primary route of termination, anyone with high blood pressure or of age would succumb first.)
Beria knew that ALL of his predecessors had pre-deceased him during just such purges as the Doctor’s Plot! It was heads-up or heads off.
Nikita wrote in his diary that Stalin was an anti-Semite of the first water — not even one step behind Hitler in this fixation.
This makes the assertions of “Unholy Trinity” that Stalin used/ egged on Hitler to his own ends all the more credible. It’s of note that the full scope of the Shoah didn’t erupt until Barbarossa rolled out. That curious timing is hard to overlook.
And all the while, Stalin was shipping out entire nations into Siberia. This latter campaign was of epic scope considering the state of Soviet railroads and the urgency of the war.
We are still sifting through the sea of lies that is Soviet Great Patriotic War hagiography.
How many know of the debacles — of even Operation Mars?
Am I the only one to note the surrender of the Italian armies on September 9, 1943 as being the pivitol event? After all, it left an eighty-mile gap in the front — on no notice — for the Red Army to WALK THROUGH — without firing a shot. This, not Kursk, is the reason that the Germans rolled backwards past the Dneiper.

It’s amazing how the left can’t stand to hear that Hitler and Stalin started the war together. They agreed to invade Poland and split it between them.

I tried to put this in Wikipedia but they wouldn’t have it. “Germany invaded Poland” is all they’ll say. I wrote Germany invaded the Western half of Poland and the USSR followed by invading their allotted sphere. At one point I even had a quote by Ribbentrop talking about occupying only the Western part and wondering why the Russians haven’t done their job as the Polish have pulled back and regrouped into the Eastern part. Still, they wouldn’t have it. It’s amazing that leftists still come to the defense of Stalin. As we always knew, anti-anti-Communism is pro-Communism.

    • TaftScholar

It is really too simple. The Nazis were trying to exterminate Jews. It was Jews! Jews! Jews! The Russians were trying to create a utopia. And they had a few thousand pages of babble by Marx and Engels and Lenin to justify it. So they killed a few million people? Now, if only Hitler would not have been so anti-communist, he would have realized that all he had to do to exterminate Jewry was to embrace a diversion. A utopia. As a communist he would have succeeded.

    Don’t forget the Warsaw uprising……

    • A Z

You mean where the Russians could have put an end to German efforts to suppress the Poles but waited until the Germans had crushed the Uprising?

Because the wanted the Poles more pliable after the war.

And who can forget Katyn Forest…

        • A Z

The Russian Communists, Soviets (I am not going to paint all Russian people with that brush), are so sweet they imprisoned, enslaved, executed anywhere from a few hundred to 25,000 American soldiers by the end of WW2.

          America in WWII
          December 2013 issue page 35

          - Russian President Yeltsin said that there had been hundreds
          - SHAEF estimated 25,000 (Some historians allege the same for the British)
          - Another document from May 1945 estimated 15,000 with 12,000 returned
          – the U.S. Army Center of Military History estimated 5,000

Why are there so many MIA from WW2? It is not just because there were so many men involved. We also had an enormous amount, a proportionate amount , of graves registration personnel and much time since then to keep digging.

A good bolshevik is a dead bolshevik.

          • Drakken

The Russians shot up all of the Polish officer class, not the Germans.

          • A Z

Yes Katyn was a massacre of Polish officers by Soviets.
True. I did not say otherwise

The Russians had enough resources to enter Warsaw before they did. They chose to rest and refit instead of rolling over the Germans to ensure fewer Poles with the gumption to resist tyranny would live to resit their future tyranny.

If the Russians had advanced then maybe they could have save more lives of every nationality.

The operational pause gave the Germans time to regroup and stiffen resistance.

The Russians were forever outrunning their supplies because their logistics were just that bad. However the extra 10 or 20 miles to take Warsaw was feasible.

How do these people who don’t know history get so far in life? In an area where knowing history is important?

    • Daniel Greenfield

They know dogma. Today that counts for more.

Oh, Ms. Powers – that great moral equalizer! Taking upon her frail and fearsome shoulders the burdensome task to equalize all of the worlds’ nastiness. Let’s go back to 2008 and hear what she has to say about Hitlary:

“We F***** up in Ohio,” she said. “In Ohio, they are obsessed and Hillary is going to town on it, because she knows Ohio’s the only place they can win. “She is a monster, too – that is off the record – she is stooping to anything,” Power also said the amount of “deceit” Clinton was putting forward “is really unattractive.” – as quoted in, The Scotsman.

Oh, and let’s not forget Power’s warm words for John Kerry after he lost the 2004 Presidential bid:

“The lesson we got was that the only thing worse than John Kerry being Swiftboated was his being slow to respond,” Power told the New Statesman. “God love him, he must have thought that having got shrapnel in his ass out there bought him some credibility. It didn’t.”

I love the moral equalizers of the world, they seem to equalize everyone else except themselves.

Everyone needs to know the Nazi-Soviet Pact. It shows that even the Communists, not just the Nazis, also started WWII. While Hajj Amin al-Husseni was the Nazi’s greatest fan of their’s, the Soviets were the primary suppliers of the Nazi’s “Final Solution.” The NKVD trained the Gestapo to make them more better, and the Soviets gave the Nazis their own gulag technology. It was a question of how the Nazis were going to make them more effective and efficient. Plus George Bernard Shaw did admire Hitler and Mussolini to a point, the French Communist Party and the Communist Party USA tolerated the Nazi-Soviet Pact, Walter Duranty lied about that there was no Ukrainian Holocaust, and Beatrice Webb as far as I’m aware did the same thing. Plus Nazis and Communists were involved in Hollywood. And National Socialism (Nazism) was developed from Marxism with a racial twist to it, just as Fascism was developed from Leninism. Look at the documentary The Soviet Story. The fact that the belief that the Soviets also started WWII is not a popular view among many is not surprising at all. The education system is corrupted and as a result misinforms or disinforms students, rewriting history. The Left controls information in our universities of what is allowed and what is not allowed.

The Left has blood on its hands and will continue to have blood on its hands until they learn from their mistakes, or until Jesus faces them on Armageddon when he saves Israel from them. That’s the truth.

Tan nails it better than few ever have or sadly ever will.
      Nice work, Tan.

I agree about Soviet complacency about the Holocaust, but your interpretation is severely flawed, Id love to discuss this insight more.

…What? You know, this is pretty popular when people compare Hitler to Stalin or say Stalin was worse because of what he did. I’ve heard from the extreme right that the Jews killed Christians, now here I am here the Russians killed Jews. Make up your mind.

The Soviets never denied the Holocaust; as a matter of fact they used it to show the tyranny of Hitler’s “supermen”. Not to mention the “Red Holocaust” is also fiercely debated in scholarly circles, and for the most part it isn’t a holocaust at all. The Holodomor was a tragedy, and while the Soviet government could have done more to prevent it, it was in no way planned.

There were no “mass deportations” to Siberia. At best the entire gulag held over 1.2 million and that dropped during the war. Not only that, but saying that Khruschev was better because he wasn’t Stalin is also false; he was the one who made up all the lies about Stalin. Under critical scrutiny, Stalin was dismissed from all charges. He actually tried to be democratic in his rule.

Here is an article dismissing that hoax that Jews were going to be deported: http://www.lechaim.ru/ARHIV/125/kost.htm

It seems the USSR will always be misunderstood. From Left or Right, it shall always be hated without a reason.

    • http://www.chaverimisrael.org Norbert Haag

Yeah sure you managed to put history back on its feet. Thank you so much.

I want to add that the benevolent and human communist states only crumbled under the pressure of the greedy, fat capitalist bourgeoisie, that didn’t stop to invent faster and made their citizens richer and better off – what a disgusting thing to do-.

Unfortunately to hold up this “historic” fact we have to give up our once close ally and co-religionist Hitler and his National Socialist (any idea why they called themselves socialists?) murderous thugs.

But hey to built the new world some sacrifices have to be made.

One of the first sacrifice was the capability to use ones own brain and offer it to the great leaders joyful and with excitement.

Now eat your Oreos, close your eyes and sleep my child…

I don’t know what this even means.

The USSR internally tried to avoid discussing the Holocaust and when it had to limited the number of dead to 3 million for its own political reasons.

The mass deportations were a plot that Stalin had put into motion, but was unable to complete.

From your arguments it seems as if you’re a Stalinist so there isn’t much point in discussing this.

“It seems the USSR will always be misunderstood. From Left or Right, it shall always be hated without a reason”

      Mass murder, tyranny, war?.

    • Drakken

Stalin killed 10 times more than Hitler ever did. The fact that you defend this bloody monster speaks volumes.

      • DogmaelJones1

Come again? How on earth could you construe Greenfield’s remarks as “defending” Stalin? Or even HItler? I think it’s obvious he has contempt for both of them.

        • Drakken

Not Greenfield, I was pointing out to Le Fox in her defense of Stalin.

            Okay. It wasn’t clear.

The rest of the allies also aided Germany. The US blocked 100% of the Jewish refugees from escaping. The British closed the Mandate, sent Jews back to the death camps, and then ran them after the war.
No the rescue of European Jewry was a side action to ending the war not a goal

    • Daniel Greenfield

It wasn’t even a side action.

It’s always interesting reading Jewish writer’s take on the Bolshevik run Soviet Union & their complete avoidance of the Soviet/Bolshevik’s own Holocaust including Ukrainian, White Russians, Poles and assorted groups totaling 20-40 million killed. Yet I rarely ever see anything written in the Jewish press about this Democide!!! I tend to think this was part of the Horowitz/Radosh beef w/ Diana West’s disclosure of the vast Soviet subversion of the FDR Administration. Its time to address these historic facts!
