Benghazi Victims’ Families Demand Real Investigation

Jihadist Hand SignMonday, surviving family members of the victims of the Sept. 11, 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya dispatched a letter to House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) criticizing Congress’s disorganized and inadequate inquiry into the tragic incident. Approximately 75 military and conservative leaders, including Freedom Center President David Horowitz, joined in calling for the formation of a congressional select committee, equipped with subpoena authority, to provide a serious investigation into the attack. The full text of the letter follows.

“To the living we owe respect. To the dead we owe the truth.” –Voltaire

The Honorable John Boehner
Speaker, U.S. House of Representatives
The Capitol, H-232
Washington, D.C., 20515

January 6, 2014

Dear Speaker Boehner,

We write to express our grave concern over the failure of your House of Representatives to extract the truth from the Obama administration concerning the attack on our diplomatic and intelligence facilities in Benghazi, Libya; and, the brutal deaths of Ambassador Christopher Stephens, U.S. Foreign Service Officer Sean Smith, and security officers Ty Woods and Glen Doherty.

To date, five (5) different committees of the House have conducted separate hearings, uncovering information in a piecemeal fashion lacking professional investigators.  The five committees’ efforts are disjointed and uncoordinated.  The Obama administration has benefited from that dysfunctional process to hide the truth.  Hardly any Obama administration witnesses have testified – publicly or privately.  You have resisted repeated calls for the creation of a select investigative committee with subpoena authority. It appears that you are satisfied to allow that state of investigative incoherence and ambiguity to continue.  The last public hearing by any of the five committees was held in September – four (4) months ago.  The families of the dead who fought valiantly to protect the mission and their families, the survivors, and the American people deserve better from you and your Members of Congress. They deserve the absolute truth from their government. Your failure to get the truth and hold public officials accountable increases the possibility of other repeat attacks and additional failures to defend Americans abroad.

On Sunday, December 29, 2013, the New York Times published a story concerning the Benghazi attacks that directly contradicts the sworn testimony of witnesses who appeared before various committees.  Besides the obvious New York Times editorial and political objectives of inoculating Hillary Clinton and her 2016 presidential campaign from further criticism of her failures as Secretary of State, the story contradicts objective truth and established facts in a way that confuses the public.  Your inaction and failure to lead on the Benghazi investigation directly contributes to the repetition of lies; a lack of accountability from responsible government officials; and the political advancement of persons who seek to continue to “fundamentally transform” the Constitution and our country.  The New York Times recent publication proves the Benghazi story is not “going away.”

Your oversight of the Department of Justice and Federal Bureau of Investigation has been without any meaningful effect or result.  Not a single terrorist in this well-planned and executed military attack by radical Islamists has been apprehended.  Ahmed Abu Khattala, a ringleader of the attack, granted long interviews to reporters in Benghazi cafes, while the Obama administration – and you – have done nothing.  Nearly 16 months after the terrorist attack, the American public has no accountability and no plan of action from House leadership. The public is subjected to undisputed disinformation from a White House who calls the terror attack a “phony scandal.”  While the White House repeats false and misleading information, you continue to ignore claims, documented by Rep. Frank Wolf, of intelligence officers being intimidated with multiple, punitive polygraph examinations and harassing non-disclosure agreement demands.  If Benghazi is “phony” why are intelligence officers being threatened not to speak and subjected to polygraph exams? Why do you stand by passively?

Some analysts believe your inaction and passivity towards getting to the truth concerning Benghazi is because you were briefed on the intelligence and special operations activities in Libya as a member of the “Super 8.”   You may possess “guilty knowledge.”  We recall how then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi developed a form of “amnesia” concerning a documented briefing she received on so-called “enhanced interrogation techniques” – later termed “torture” for political purposes.  Are you in the same position as your predecessor?  Are you dodging a legitimate, thorough, coordinated investigation of Benghazi because it will damage your political position as Speaker?

You should be embarrassed that members of Congress, and your own party, are forced to file Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests with Obama administration agencies to get basic information about the Benghazi issue.  What a sad and pathetic statement about the operations of House standing committees looking into this tragedy that FOIA has become the last resort of even Republican Members seeking the truth!  Are you concerned that the scattershot and untimely efforts of the various committees may actually be doing more harm than good at documenting facts?  These are all examples of Republican leadership failures.  How are you accountable?

Rep. Mike Rogers and the Intelligence Committee seem to act as defense counsel for the Obama administration.  A recent Intelligence Committee weekly update note stated as fact that no arms shipments were being run from Libya, and that no intelligence officers were being coerced not to speak.  There is substantial evidence to the contrary on both counts.  Why does Rep. Rogers parrot the discredited falsehoods of the so-called “Accountability Review Board” (ARB)?  Conflicting accounts, testimony and evidence need to be investigated – not dismissed or ignored.  Don’t those contradictions and questions compel you, on behalf of the American people, to take any action to resolve the matter and get to the truth?

Aren’t you concerned that General Carter Ham was suddenly and prematurely recalled from AFRICOM, and then made statements at the Aspen Institute that directly contradicted the Obama administration’s position on the nature of the attack in Benghazi?  Why has General Ham not testified publicly before one of the House committees?

The New York Times story reports that the CIA was, in fact, collecting weapons in Benghazi.  If true, why was the CIA running a separate, parallel weapons program from the State Department’s $40 million collection effort?  Where did the CIA-purchased weapons go?  Is the Obama administration arming al Qaeda affiliated jihadists in Syria?

If you wished, you could have publicly engaged Rep. Devin Nunes concerning his November 6, 2013 letter to you, addressing the nine unanswered questions about Benghazi. Instead, there was thundering silence from your office. You have an opportunity to show strong leadership and resolve a national disgrace perpetrated by specific public officials. You are failing.

Your reluctance to lead and resistance to create a Select Committee on Benghazi must end.  More than 75% of all House Republicans – with the conspicuous absence of those in leadership or committee chairmen – have cosponsored Rep. Wolf’s Select Committee bill.  Few bills in this Congress demonstrate such overwhelming support from Republicans.  Additionally, the bill enjoys the support of national security advocacy groups, and the Wall Street Journal editorial board, among many others.

We urge you to bring the bill to the floor for a vote immediately to start effective oversight on this critical national security matter immediately. We have waited long enough. Your approach is not working.

Mr. Speaker, we call upon you to act now and create a Select Committee on Benghazi to investigate all aspects of the United States involvement in Libya, to include, but not be limited to the attacks of September 11, 2012. It must now also include the protracted cover-up the American people, the families of the fallen and those with loved ones serving overseas have endured. The new committee must have subpoena power, capable staff and Members from both parties who are committed to finding the truth, not playing politics.  The Committee must be staffed with new, professional, qualified and experienced investigators. It must have resources to conduct a thorough, comprehensive investigation and issue an exhaustive report before this Congress adjourns.

Sincerely,

The Undersigned:

Oh they can demand all they want, but no one in Dear Leader’s administration will listen to them, including the Nothing Man himself. I wish them the best and, eventually, the full truth will come to light. But I doubt anyone will swing from the gallows because of it.

The most powerful people behind the scandal will stall, declare they “can’t recall” and overwhelm everyone with endless legal chicanery. Lawyers, as we all know, specialize in that sort of crap.

Oh and I’m sure the weeping wussy himself, Mr. Boo-hoo Boehner, will get right on it. Yeah, he’s just the brave soul we need to put the president’s feet to the fire and get to the bottom of this.

But more than that, the American people are fatigued by the seemingly endless scandals coming from this administration. Eventually, they will lose interest and call for the entire investigation and/or prosecution to just go away. Besides, they’re much too preoccupied with American Idol, the Kardashians or whatever reality show is popular at the time.

Hey, did you ever hear the story about the Frog in the Kettle?

    - Representative John Boehner must be primaried.

    - If he survives primary challenge and there is no Democrat candidate another party must run against him.

    - Every effort must be taken to campaign against him and deplete his campaign funds, so the very thought of running for elective office is see as futile for him.

    - He needs to be so radioactive that he cannot be hired as a lobbyist.

    - Above letter must be sent to everyone in your special circles and not using a work email account (if you are using a work account, it would be poor form and 1/2 effort. It says that you do not care to take the time to do it right.).

    - Creation of a select investigative committee with subpoena authority is not enough. If it is created over the summer or in the fall for campaign season purposes, it is not a serious effort. It is just something that can be endured with vast amounts of commercials, walking around money and precinct level work. It has to begin in SPRING and the level of commitment and finesse has to be such that it never leaves the spotlight.

Nothing will happen. Not while this admin is in charge anyway.

    • Atikva

      Especially if we, the
      people, do nothing about it.

How about mailing a copy of this letter to Mr.
Boehner with a note mentioning your outrage and adding your name to the list of
      its signatories?

How about emailing those of your representatives who are not among the 179 sponsors and demanding that they do the job for which they were elected if they want to keep a chance to be re-elected?

Sure it’s a tedious process, but we loose the right to complain if we don’t do anything about this scandal.

  • Hass

They can demand all they want. I’ve seen how this Admin behaves at hearings, it astounds me, and I find it unbelievable. It’s like they’re untouchable.

Because the rogue government is the CIA and NSA…with the secret FISA Court to make it appear legal…We now have our very own GESTAPHO

      • tatave

Worst than the Gestapo or KGB.

Not quite yet. People haven’t been disappearing yet, at least as far as we know.

        • SadPuppy

So there you have it, power can be usurped at the Executive level and the US can be turned into a tyranny. Can’t live under the delusion of freedom anymore, checks and balances have been subverted by criminals. All that’s needed now is a dollar collapse and the USA can officially enter the third world, while the criminal bastards that caused it all escape with he wealth. Ironic isn’t it?

    • tatave

They can demand what they want, nothing will happen.Quite interesting to notice the silence of the “great defenders” those so prompt to jump to the recue of Ted Kennedy,Clinton etc etc,Where are tose low lives?

      • defcon 4

The names will be taken down for later use by the NSA and the other alphabet soup of federal law enforcement agencies, while the petition will be round-filed.

Congressman Bonehead isn’t going to accomplish anything during his stay as Speaker. He is a waste of time and energy. He should be sent packing back to his Daddy’s bar where he can draw draft beer for a living.

What folks should be demanding is an investigation into the fraudulent and criminal activity of this Fraud in Chief. The evidence has already been collected and packaged all these crap heads would have to do is giver the investigators a platform to show their evidence. This would end this nightmare we are suffering through. All the other investigations are a total waste of time and money.

Those people who where murdered at Benhazi as well as all the other places around the world where many people innocent people die because of murderous violence of those who engage militant jihadism of Islam,9:111,112. 47:4, is terrible indeed. The hands of the jihadists who engage in such heinous actions of murder because of their religion are very bloodly . All does bring to mind the wisdom of the teaching of Thomas Paine from his book THE AGE OF REASON. Which reads “Any system of religion that has anything it it that shocks the mind of a child, cannot be a true system.”

It’s about time to get after Boehner — it should have been done a long time ago. He is an absolute disaster in the position of House Speaker. However, I note that Chris Stevens’ family are not among the signatories and have never been critical in any way. Makes one wonder if they haven’t been gotten to by Obama and the Clintons.

  • toc7

There is something very sinister about Hillary’s and Obama’s attempts to cover this up. The truth MUST come out and fast.

In her remarks the very day after the attack on the Benghazi outpost, Secretary Clinton told the American people that, “Heavily armed militants assaulted the compound and set fire to our buildings.”

Days later, Ambassador Susan Rice told Bob Schieffer on Face the Nation, “Whether they were al-Qaida affiliates, whether they were Libyan-based extremists or al-Qaida itself I think is one of the things we’ll have to determine.”

It has long been established that the Benghazi outpost was neither an embassy or a consulate, but was largely a CIA operation. The light U.S. military footprint in Libya, while avoiding a repeat of the Bush quagmires in Iraq and Afghanistan, toppled the Qaddafi dictatorship and led to the first democratic elections — in which the conservative Islamics were big losers — in 40 years. Qaddafi, of course, was the tyrant linked to the terrorist deaths of hundreds of Americans and who President Reagan called the “Mad Dog of the Mideast.”

Stevens, then a “Special Envoy” to the rebels, arrived in Libya on a Greek Cargo ship with the CIA and other personnel. During the revolution, CIA Global Response Staff (GRS) soldiers and Pentagon Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) commandos utilized indigenous fighters as “force multipliers.” In post-war Libya, the mission was to secure the many MANPADS that had been looted from Qaddafi’s arsenals during the war. These shoulder-fired missiles posed grave dangers to civilian aviation. Despite the many security risks, this mission was too vital to just abandon as Republican partisans claim — in hindsight — should have happened. And all the activities in Libya, of course, were authorized with the signing of a “Presidential Finding” and were carried out with oversight by Republicans and Democrats alike on the Congressional Intelligence Committees.

These covert forces, by design not happenstance, provided security at the outpost, reinforced the Diplomatic Security Services (DSS) force and local security. As Commanding General Ham and the Chair of the Joint Chiefs of Staff testified, Stevens himself turned down multiple offers of an increased military presence at the outpost. This was likely due to the clandestine nature of the operation and the fact that a large Western invasion force would not have made the delicate mission of disarming the numerous militias and creating a central national security force any easier.

Three CIA/JSOC response teams comprised the Benghazi rescue and evacuation operation. They were further reinforced by dozens of fighters from the February 17th Brigade, Libyan Shield, and Libyan Military Intelligence arriving in more than 50 armored vehicles. In the end, these forces killed dozens of the attacking militants, secured the bodies of our four dead, and escorted nearly 40 Americans to safety.

We have had more than a year of investigations and reports. Six different Congressional committees. More than 30 hearings and staff briefings. More than 25,000 pages of documents provided to Congress. An FBI investigation — including interviews with the surviving personnel just days after the attack, the transcripts of which have been provided to Congress. The bipartisan Accountability Review Board (ARB) investigation — which also had full access to all surviving personnel — and their classified and unclassified reports to Congress.

The Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff testified that the President authorized the immediate deployment of all forces necessary to save lives in Benghazi and that the White House was fully engaged with the military command center for the duration of the attacks. Commanding General Ham testified that he had full authority to order an air response but that it was neither indicated or timely. Former Secretary of Defense, Republican Robert Gates declared that he would have responded in the same manner and that critics have a cartoonish view of our military capabilities.

The ARB presented their report — classified and unclassified versions — to Congress. They interviewed more than 100 people and had full access to the Benghazi survivors — just as the team of FBI investigators and lab technicians did at Ramstein Air Force Base just days after the attacks. The transcripts of these interviews were also provided to Congress. This was confirmed by the bipartisan leadership of the ARB, Ambassador Pickering, President George H.W. Bush’s U.N. envoy, and Gen. Mullen, the top U.S. general under President George W. Bush. “We had unfettered access to State Department personnel and documents. There were no limitations,” Mullen said. “We received the full cooperation of all witnesses and every State Department office. We interviewed everyone we thought it was necessary to interview. We operated independently and were given freedom to pursue the investigation as we deemed necessary.”

Congress also has had direct contact with the survivors. Deputy CIA Director Mike Morell — along with CIA officers who were at the agency’s Benghazi base on the night of the attack — testified at a classified hearing before the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence back in May.

Even the conservative Washington Times reported last June that there was no “stand down” ordered in regard to Benghazi. The Republican-led House Armed Services Oversight Committee — based on the testimony of the military and others actually involved — made an unusual public statement after a classified hearing and confirmed there was no “stand down.”

Now we have had more of the CIA force on the ground in Benghazi testify before Congress. They confirmed that the response time was the result of the Team Leader seeking more intelligence and reinforcement from Libyan fighters. Once again it is confirmed that there was no delay or “stand down” resulting from any orders from superiors.

You parrot the Left’s talking points very well – I’d say you earned your pay this week. Of course, almost everything you state is wrong – I haven’t the time to go into all your errors, but your post is pure propaganda. Perhaps you should apply for a job with the NYT – but here, we’ve no use for you. A cover-up have already been proven – now we want to know exactly what has been covered up, and since you won’t be any help, just stand aside and let us go to work.

      • TomM

So you have time to “go to work” on this but you don’t have to respond to all of Jim Ward’s errors? That’s funny.

        • NAHALKIDES

Feeding the trolls is never as productive as shining a disinfecting light on the Progressive project. You may not think it’s so funny when the truth finally does come out – your heroes Barry Soetoro and Hillary Clinton are not going to come out smelling like roses, and we already know how deceitful they are.

          • TomM

This is nothing but more fodder from the anti Obama/Hillary loons who cannot accept that Obama was elected not once but twice and who will do anything to smear Hillary before her (soon to be victorious) presidential bid. As noted by Jim Ward, the bipartisan ARB has already reviewed all of this and presented their findings to Congress so this “letter” is just more silly nonsense. Also, Obama and Hillary are not my “heroes”. While I did vote for Obama twice, I do not agree with everything he’s done but, considering the alternative, he was clearly the best choice. Like I said, Obama is not my hero, he’s just my president (and yours also whether you admit and/or agree with that). So what are you going to do once Hillary’s president for the next 8 years after Obama?

In Benghazi where the four murdered men where white, Obama
doesn’t care. As his old hag, Hillary said “what difference does it

I’ve read Boehner has refused to create a select committee to investigate Benghazi. My question is why? Does the administration have knowledge of something unsavory regarding the Speaker? Blackmail? I wonder. I also wonder why the administration has not pursued the Benghazi perpetrators. I wonder if the trail leads to the Muslim Brotherhood, former Egyptian president Morsi, MB operations in Syria, and/or schemes to gain the release of the Blind Sheik? any thing is possible and these issues have been publicly rumored for some time. Why not create a select committee to find the truth?

  • DontMessWithAmerica

Find several benevolent billionaires with a strong sense of justice to put up several million for an independent investigation in Libya and in Egypt to pay whistle blowers handsomely and you’ll get all the data and proof to impeach Obama and indict Hillary. There was a Muslim Brotherhood connection in this attack and the present Egyptian administration could in all likelihood help – they would be most willing to help because their chief enemy as America’s chief enemy sits in our White House.
