The best that can be said of this article is that it is based on half-truths. The writer has totally ignored the fact that the Gulen movement has covertly placed tens of thousands of its members in state institutions from the police force to the judiciary and all the rest in between. It was the Gulen members in these institutions who fabricated fake evidence to put thousands of their opponents behind bars in cooperation with their then ally, the Erdogan government. The worst part was that it's members in the courts made rulings even when it became clear that the so-called evidence were fake! Calling Gulen a moderate is akin to calling Hitler a democrat for participating in elections until he took full control of power. The entrenchment of his roots in Turkey, despite the reflexes of the old secular guard, speaks ominously for the rest of the world. Of course, Erdogan's fascist tyranny, also is a big problem, but while his influence is localized in Turkey, Gulen's has spread all over the world. Now, even though Gulen's insidious ways is potentially more dangerous, taking sides in this conflict is akin to taking sides in mafia wars.
For the writer of this article, he needs to do his homework and duly research a subject, before writing on it. That's what he owes his readers and not a superficial, misleading article.

Obama has many characteristics similar to Erdogan. Purging the military of political undesirables (i.e. conservatives and Christians), opposing an independent judiciary, concentrating power in the hands of the executive, black-balling critical journalists, using the executive power to attack and prosecute political opponents, attacking the freedom of speech, religion and the press.
Notice that none of these actors actually believes in anything like freedom - not Erdogan the rabid Islamist, not Gulen the less-rabid Islamist, and certainly not the Social Democratic (Socialist) party. Turkey is already under one-party rule; it's just that there are separate factions of one big statist party. There is no one to speak for freedom, and therefore Turkey will continue to slide deeper and deeper into dictatorship whichever sub-party wins.
