Maher and Harris Educate Affleck about Islam

dsI don’t usually stand with comedian Bill Maher, but last week on his Real Time program the provocateur once again was a voice of reason addressing the Islam Problem. His guests were atheist author Sam Harris, former RNC Chairman Michael Steele, New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof, and actor/director Ben Affleck of the Oscar-winning Iranian hostage crisis flick Argo. As you might expect from such a lineup, the discussion swiftly degenerated into the usual stalemate between facts and politically correct defensiveness.

“Liberals need to stand up for liberal principles,” opened Maher, “freedom of speech, freedom to practice any religion you want without fear of violence, freedom to leave a religion, equality for women, equality for minorities, including homosexuals.” When this earned applause, he continued, “these are liberal principles that liberals applaud for, but then when you say in the Muslim world, this is what’s lacking, then they get upset.”

Sam Harris, an atheist who, like Maher, at least understands that not all religions are the same, replied,

Liberals have really failed on the topic of theocracy. They’ll criticize white theocracy, they’ll criticize Christians, they’ll still get upset over the abortion clinic bombings that happened in 1984… The crucial point of confusion is that we have been sold this meme of Islamophobia where every criticism of Islam is conflated with bigotry toward Muslims as people, and that is intellectually ridiculous.

This brought whoops of approval from the audience, and a highly agitated Affleck took the opportunity to jump in and challenge Harris on his credentials for discussing Islam. Of course, Affleck, who had nothing knowledgeable to say about the religion himself, immediately proved Harris’ point by calling his statement “gross” and “racist” – buying into the standard progressive misconception that Islam is somehow a race. Maintaining his composure, Harris responded, again to applause, that we have to be able to criticize ideas. This was a point with which Affleck hastened to agree – until Harris dropped some truth that “Islam is the mother lode of bad ideas.”

“Jesus,” a frustrated Affleck exclaimed. He practically came out of his chair a moment later exclaiming, “How about the more than a billion people who aren’t fanatical, who don’t punish women, who just want to go to school, have some sandwiches, and don’t do any of the things you say all Muslims do?” This too brought applause, even though once again he was proving Harris’ point that criticizing Islam gets unfairly conflated with a broad-brush attack on all Muslims.

“All these billion people don’t hold these pernicious beliefs?” Maher asked. “That’s just not true, Ben.” When Harris “unpacked” the concept for an impatient Affleck, explaining about concentric circles of fundamentalism, Affleck shut down listening and simply interjected, “Let him [Kristof] talk.” Nicholas Kristof defended moderate Muslims who speak out, and Michael Steele raised the point that opposition Muslim voices don’t get media coverage, to which Maher, trying to bring the discussion back to the ideology of Islam, responded that a big reason Muslims don’t speak out is fear. “It’s the only religion that acts like the mafia,” Maher said. “They will f**king kill you if you say the wrong thing, draw the wrong picture, or write the wrong book. That’s why Ayaan Hirsi Ali needs bodyguards 24/7.”

Affleck, unable to restrain his righteous anger, suddenly gesticulated at Harris as he began to rant irrationally. “What is your solution, to just condemn Islam? We’ve killed more Muslims than they have us, by an awful lot, and yet somehow we’re exempted from things because they’re not reeeally a reflection of what we believe in…”

When he couldn’t be reined in from this tangent, Harris condescended, “Let me just give you what you want,” and proceeded to say that there are hundreds of millions of Muslims who don’t agree with ISIS and that reformers of Islam should be supported. That didn’t pacify Affleck or Kristof, who said that Harris’ point still smacked of “the way white racists talked about African-Americans and defined blacks” – proving yet again Harris’ point that criticizing Islamic ideology always raises the specter of Islamophobia.

When Affleck began another stupid rant, equating a factual discussion of Islam with racism against blacks, Maher cut him off. “It’s based on facts. I can show you a Pew poll of Egyptians – they are not outliers in the Muslim world – that say like 90% of them believe death is the appropriate response to leaving the religion. If 90% of Brazilians thought that death was the appropriate response to leaving Catholicism, you would think it was a bigger deal.”

“I would think it was a big deal no matter what,” Affleck lied, trying to sound fair and balanced. People like Affleck will defend the rights of jihadists all the way up until the blade severs their heads from their bodies, but think nothing of publicly smearing all Christians as theocratic bigots.

“I’m simply telling you,” Affleck told Harris, “I disagree with you.” Harris calmly countered correctly with, “You don’t understand my argument.”

That’s because Ben Affleck is typical of uninformed but holier-than-thou, media-empowered Hollywood actors, who substitute passion for thought and utopian ideals for reality, who reject facts for ad hominem slurs of racism, and who wear the blinders of moral equivalence because their false god is multiculturalism. Unfortunately, we can’t dismiss the influence of such smug, ignorant loudmouths on the smug, militantly ignorant sheep who constitute their audience.

“We’re obviously not convincing anybody,” Bill Maher conceded. Maybe, maybe not, but unlike nearly all of his cohorts in the media, at least Maher’s willing to try.

Maher is COURAGEOUS on Islam. Whatever you may think of him elsewhere, on Islam he is taking point at considerable physical risk, of which he is fully aware.

What Affleck has is ATTITUDE. That substitutes for thought on the Left. He can’t be a complete fool, having coauthored Good Will Hunting and directed Argo. But in order to maintain his social position and to navigate the world without having any knowledge of it, he has ATTITUDE.

That means that he thinks people who disagree with him are bad people. Facts don’t intrude. And he can’t make an argument. He thinks because he knows a very nice couple in Dusseldorf who make the greatest strudel, we can’t be against the Nazis. And he thinks that’s a profound idea that has never occurred to the rest of us.

What does Affleck think about Peter Kassig, who converted to Islam and went to help the Muslim downtrodden only to be next on the beheading list?

    TILT. Wouldn’t compute.

Ben Afleck is a raving idi0t… comparing criticism of Islam to racist White attacks on Blacks.

“We’ve killed more Muslims than they have us, by an awful lot” – Afleck

That is definitely false. Since that murderous Arab psychopath started his dev!lish hate cult 14 centuries ago, Jihadis have killed over 200 million non-Muslims around the world.
Apparently it has not occurred to Afleck that if Muslims weren’t trying so hard to kill us, we wouldn’t have to kill any of them.
Why aren’t we killing Hindus, Buddhists or other non-Christians?

No kidding. The latest American soldier whom they are threatening to behead next, actually returned to Syria and converted to Islam WILLINGLY. Yet, they are still threatening to behead him. Any group that will rape women and children, behead them and any man who attempts to stand against them is not representing a religion of peace and neither do they just want to buy some sandwiches as Affleck suggests.

Islam since its inception has invaded more than 100 nations and there have been more than 60 million casualties estimated.

The movie Argo could have been directed by someone who knows nothing about Islam. The movie doesn’t deal directly with Islamic issues, but with revolutionary excess.

Ben Affleck like most liberals has been deceived by the benign, smiling exterior of Islam while Islam’s true 1380 year history resembles a metastasizing malignant cancer.

Wise up Liberals, the greatest weapon of Islam is not committing acts of Jihad such as 9-11; it is stealth Jihad to destroy the nation from within.

“Most liberals” is unfair. Maher is one. I’ve talked to a lot of liberals. Any liberal that has bothered to look two inches deep into this understands the nature of the problem. Fools like Affleck (and quite frankly, our country’s leadership) who insist on hammering the irrelevant point about the many peaceful Muslims in the world need to be called out. The ones who think like Affleck do simply never bothered to look into it.

Maher uses the best tactic one can in his film “Religulous:” he lets Muslims defend Islam for themselves. I defy any liberal to see that film and not be chilled by it.

      • johninohio1

A ‘moderate Muslim’ is in violation of the Koran, and is therefore a heretic. Whether an individual Muslim is moderate or not, can’t be established by polls, or even anonymous polls. The question should be, do you have males of fighting age, and if so, where are they? And, how much of the money you donate to Muslim organizations and your mosque ends up in the hands of jihadists? Individual Muslims who withhold their sons and money, if they exist, probably experience a variety of backlashes, possibly even death threats.

      • Nabukuduriuzhur

No, “most liberals” is quite fair. I’ve dealt with them since I was a kid and very, very few of them have any perception of reality. Most of that comes from the pot that the under 60 Democrat smokes or has smoked. Even those who quit are never right in the head again. (I lived through Oregon’s legalization with its 20,000+ casualties from murder, manslaughter, vehicular homicide, domestic violence, etc.)

Maher is closer to the liberal of 30 years ago, where he mostly believes that which isn’t factual, but he hasn’t entirely lost his ability to think. He still can see the brick wall ahead. The typical liberal has no ability to foresee the results of an action, as is shown by their claims when a matter is discussed.

  • Bottom and Company

I wouldn’t give Bill Maher credit for a damn thing. He makes sense this one time because the world he lives in has deteriorated so badly he has no where else to go but reality.

You don’t have to like Maher. But he’s one of the only people with a big platform speaking out on this regularly–and not just preaching to the choir, either. Many in his audience probably share Affleck’s inane position.

You’re right. Most liberals are glad to join forces with jihadists against their common enemy–Western Civilization and the Christian religion, which is at the heart of it. Anyone who doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand that Quran verse 9:29 makes all Muslims Bad People hasn’t a right to speak in front of a mirror, much less a camera.

Quran verse 9:29, directs all Muslims to dominate the world thru:

    1) Forced conversions to Islam or
    2) Forced Enslavement and forced payment of a protection tax or
    3) Murder those who resist

There is no such thing as a moderate Muslim; they are all menions of Satan and Affleck of all people should know this.

    • Bamaguje

Methinks Q 9:5 is more dangerous. Also known as the ‘Sword verse’, it reads – “When the sacred months are over, kill the unbelievers wherever you find them”
And there’s Q 9:123 -”Believers make war on infidels who dwell around you, let them find harshness in you.”

      • american121

Both verses reflect the True nature of Islam and that is Satanic. They are undeserving of habitation on planent Earth!

      • Moa

Even more importantly, those verses are among the last attributed to Mohammed (the Most-Evil man that ever lived). That means those violent verses “abrogate” (replace) all other verses. Abrogation is KEY to understanding Islam.

        • Nabukuduriuzhur

I’d say Mao was the most evil. Some 30 million EACH in the chinese civil war (he starved entire cities), the Great Leap Forward, and the Cultural Revolutions. Also, some 400 million thanks to the One Child Only Policy.

One can guess that his torment will be the most severe of humans after the antichrist, beast, and false prophet.

          • Moa

Mao was evil alright, but he was an amateur compared to Mohammed and his legacy – which is estimated at a staggering 270 million over the 1400 years of continuous jihad. Worse, the Muslim world is only getting started. Qur’an Sura 9:5 and 9:29 command them to kill or subjugate all of the other 5.4 Billion people on the planet. Once the jihadis get nukes then nowhere is safe (which is why the maniacs ruling the otherwise decent Iranian people must not be allowed to get nukes).

          • Bamaguje

If Mo’ had guns, tanks and bombs rather than just swords, he’d have wreaked far more atrocities than Mao.

    • Davon Bertoli

Yes you just said it, anyone who doesn’t have the mental capacity to understand the Qu’ran shouldn’t open his gob
You deliberately take things completely out of context: Here it is:

It was meant for a specific time during the attacks that were carried out against Muslims.

      Assuredly
Allah hath succoured you on many fields and on the day of Hunain, When
your number elated you; then it availed you naught, and the earth, wide
as it is, straitened unto you; then ye turned away in retreat. (25)

      Thereafter
Allah sent down His calm upon His apostle and upon the believers, and
He sent down hosts ye saw not and tormented those who would disbelieve:
such is the meed of the infidels. (26)

Then Allah will, thereafter, relent toward whomsoever He liketh, and Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. (27)

      O
Ye who believe! the associators are simply filthy; so let them not
approach the Sacred Mosque after this their year; and if ye fear
poverty, Allah shall presently enrich you out of His grace, if He will.
Verily Allah is grace. Knowing, Wise. (28)

(read the above, it was about the “non” believers at that time who were attacking them.)

      Fight
against those who believe not in Allah nor in the Last Day and hold not
that forbidden which Allah and His apostle have forbidden and observe
not the true religion, of those who have been vouchsafed the Book, until
they pay the tribute out of hand and they are subdued. (29)

      (Read the above)
It specifically speaks about the Jizya (a tax) that is in fact a 7 times lower than the Muslims had to pay, plus with that they were protected they were NOT forced to go to war, or fight alongside the Muslims.
Now when you quote something have the decency and the knowledge of what it means and when it came down.

I am not an apologist like you always love to tag “Muslims” I am stating some facts.
      Good day

    • Davon Bertoli

Let’s take this out of context in the Bible shall we ?

      Matthew 10:34

34 “Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35 For I have come to turn“‘a man against his father,
      a daughter against her mother,
      a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law—
36 a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’[c]
      And it goes on

Does it mean what it states ?
Now I’ll leave you with this :-)

Isn’t this the same Bill Maher who said the 911 hijackers had guts to fly planes into buildings? Maybe after so many years, he’s finally catching on. As for Affleck, I get so tired of these smug Hollywood liberals. He knows nothing about Islam. I think what leftists and Islamists have in common is they are both vengeful type of people. They don’t want justice or peace as they claim, they want vengeance over what they perceive to be insults.

Mr. Kristof mentioned moderate Muslims who speak out (presumably against Islamic jihadism). Where are they? Why aren’t they getting any air time?

    • WW4

There was a film made for PBS a while back by Frank Gaffney that never aired, presumably because its depiction of Islam was too frank. There were a few moderates depicted (giving the moderates a platform was I think the point of the film). Needless to say they lived under threat–and they were the ones brave enough to air their views in public.

I’ve been to Sicily. Privately, most will tell you their frustration with the Mafia’s grip on government and business. Relatively few make a public stink–and death, there, is not even always the punishment for speaking out. Multiply that by a billion, throw in religious “justification” and “law,” observe the deafening silence, and one quickly sees that why, yes, there may be indeed moderates, but their number is irrelevant in a world where Islamists either control their tyrannical governments; or the secular governments cede to Islamic law and influence.

Affleck is not just “of uninformed but holier-than-thou, media-empowered Hollywood actors.” He’s typical of leftists of all gradations. I work with a lot of Democrats ranging from liberal to “progressive” and probably beyond. One of my friends is very intelligent, a Democrat, and an attorney. We were having a discussion and I said, yes, I believe Islam is a violent religion. He said that he found that no different than what the Nazis said about Jews before WWII. I said that there was one crucial difference. He asked what that was. I replied, “The difference is that Jews were not, in fact, syphilitic vermin whereas, in fact, Islam is a violent religion. The difference is fact.” He couldn’t admit that. Almost all such people are more concerned with not be perceived a “multicultural” or “judgmental” than they are with objective reality. Most of them don’t even believe in objective reality and aren’t interested in hearing about, e.g., Islamic religious doctrine. They have their myth and are sticking with it.

The Maher segment is making the news and Bill O’Reilly Factor. O’Reilly doesn’t get it. O’Reilly says the Bible has harsh passages like Islam and in both cases it is a matter of interpretation. Katherine Ham agrees “it is not Islam itself.” They don’t get Harris who clearly says it is Islam. “Islam is the mother load of bad ideas.”

Right now I’m with Maher and Harris. A good atheist like Harris, who can say that Islam is far worse than Christianity, is far better than a good Christian like O’Reilly who says these religions are the same but too many Muslims have bad “interpretations.”

  • joe kulak

Islam has slaughtered 270 million kafirs over 1400 years. Affleck doesn’t know what he’s talking about, nor does he want to.
Harris was following the logical strategy of separating what can be termed Political Islam (the tenets of Islam regarding how muslims are to interact with us, the kafirs) from the personal religious beliefs of muslims. No one cares whether someone prays 3 times a day or 5 times, but we should care if there is an ideology that insists upon the rest of us converting, becoming dhimmis and paying the jizya, or being executed. We don’t need nor want to criticize individual muslims; we need to focus on the ideology of Islam. As Harris said, it is the motherlode of bad ideas. Check out PoliticalIslam.com

  • Joey Isotope

Ben confuses the legitimate criticism of islam and its central role in driving not a small number of muslims to murder with the PC sin of intolerance.
    gotesque and
I had actually thought Ben possessed an outstanding intellect. But as is the case so often in Hollywood, his gifts at acting and movie making do not translate to even suggest having the modest capacity to discern matters of human behavior and simple reality. His sluggish cognition still cannot grasp that islam is not a religion, and that although all muslims do not act on the doctrine of the koran, those that do prove islam is evil and dangerous. He is encumbered by many of the planted liberal ideological preconceptions . He probably believes he is holding onto a higher moral standard and is legitimately freaked at the idea of having to “hate” if he ever acknowledged that there is indeed a group out there deserving of intolerance on account of their decrepit ideology which itself is supremacist, intolerant and leads to murder, and lots of it.

Some resentments in life spring from a yearning from fairness but Ben Afleck’s support for Islam as demonstrated on Bill Maher’s television program indicates that this yearning has gone into overdrive to the extent that he has now become a “useful idiot” and an apologist for a wicked theo/political/ transnational supremacist movement that viciously subjugates women, gleefully hangs homosexuals and violently persecutes non-Muslim minorities.

Islam may be the first real evil which has benefited from the international curse of political correctness. After all, if you were an anti-Nazi you would not be accused of suffering from Naziphobia. However, this is exactly what Afleck did when he said that the comments of Sam Harris with regard to the retrograde nature of Islam were racist.

Racism is the atom bomb of accusations which left-wing liberals like to pass around more frequently than the bong at Oliver Stone’s house but it is not Islamophobia from which we suffer but an entirely rational and justifiable Islamonausea induced by people like Afleck who, drunk on political correctness, seek to excuse every form of Muslim misbehavior. They have become one-way multiculturalist pimps for a sick ideology that threatens to destroy the very western civilization from which Afleck and his fellow travelers have benefited but which they are convinced has been the cause of almost everything that is wrong in the world. I suppose one’s opinion on that might depend on how many people one saw jumping from the Twin Towers on 9/11.

Only twice have I ever run into people (both were professors at the university I got my last two degrees at) that literally set off alarm bells.

One was a total flake who I wasn’t about to take as an advisor and despite that the jerk almost derailed my EE masters.

The other was a bio professorette who also taught in “women’s studies.” She was caught with one of her students by a student janitor. Being a woman, it was ignored.
