Obama’s News Police

Matthew Vadum is an award-winning investigative reporter and the author of the book, "Subversion Inc.: How Obama’s ACORN Red Shirts Are Still Terrorizing and Ripping Off American Taxpayers."

130430110854-obama-newser-apr30-story-topThe Obama administration is planning to send what critics characterize as government spies into the newsrooms of the nation’s media outlets.

This unprecedented assault on Americans’ First Amendment freedoms is part of the Community Organizer-in-Chief’s political war against the few pockets of media resistance he has encountered at Fox News and in the world of talk radio. Sending federal bureaucrats to meddle in newsroom affairs by conducting an alleged “study” will chill news coverage and make government-licensed broadcast media think twice about airing stories that place the Obama administration in a bad light.

To this end the Federal Communications Commission is moving forward with its “Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs,” or CIN. Although the FCC is a regulatory body, not a research organization, it plans to send researchers to question reporters, editors, and station owners about how they decide which stories to run. In the spring a field test is set for Columbia, S.C.

The FCC intends to discover “the process by which stories are selected,” how often stations cover “critical information needs,” the media outlets’ “perceived station bias,” and “perceived responsiveness to underserved populations.” The phrase “underserved populations” is politically correct neo-Marxist jargon and a screaming red flag that some kind of quota system may be on its way.

Republican members of the House Energy and Commerce Committee attacked the study idea, saying it was a step towards a “Fairness Doctrine 2.0.”

“Given the widespread calls for the Commission to respect the First Amendment and stay out of the editorial decisions of reporters and broadcasters, we were shocked to see that the FCC is putting itself back in the business of attempting to control the political speech of journalists,” all Republicans on the committee wrote in a letter to new FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler.

“It is wrong, it is unconstitutional, and we urge you to put a stop to this most recent attempt to engage the FCC as the ‘news police.’”

In an interview with Fox’s Megyn Kelly, Townhall.com news editor Katie Pavlich eviscerated the proposed study:

I don’t understand why the Obama administration hasn’t understood this idea that when the Department of Justice monitored the phone lines of journalists, and their parents by the way, that wasn’t enough to them. Now they want to send investigators into newsrooms all over the country whether it’s broadcast or print. They have no business sending those people into our newsrooms. How we gather news is none of the government’s business. And this isn’t about the FCC getting people the information that they, quote, need, as they claim. This is about controlling what people say and this is about intimidating the news through these –whatever you want to call them– navigators.

Pavlich, author of the New York Times bestselling book, Fast and Furious: Barack Obama’s Bloodiest Scandal and the Shameless Cover-Up, continued:

I just think it’s such an asinine concept that the government, government bureaucrats are now going to be appointed to come in and monitor professionals, editors, reporters, and decide the best way for them to gather news as if they don’t know what they’re doing and then to try and shift the focus from certain stories to others.

The leftist radicals at Obama’s FCC know they won’t be able to nationalize media outlets outright. They would love nothing more than to force the nation’s free media institutions to take race, class, and sex into account in future reporting.

Mark Lloyd, appointed by Obama as FCC diversity czar from 2009 to 2012, gave away the game, explaining years ago one of the ways the left planned to mau-mau its perceived opponents in the media. In short, the left wants to harass media outlets into docility in order to allow the fundamental transformation of America to proceed.

Lloyd is a huge fan of the late communist dictator Hugo Chavez and a disciple of Rules for Radicals author Saul Alinsky, Seton Motley explained during Lloyd’s tenure.

In his 2006 book entitled Prologue to a Farce: Communication and Democracy in America, [Lloyd] calls for an all-out ‘confrontational movement’ against private media.  He wants leftist activists – through incessant political pressure – and the government – through the creation of a totally untenable operating environment of fees, fines and regulations – to work together to force the commercial broadcasters out, to be replaced by public broadcasters.

Summoning the spirit of “Repressive Tolerance” essayist Herbert Marcuse, Lloyd argues that privately owned media outlets work against the public interest. Freedom of speech or the press “is all too often an exaggeration,” he wrote. “[T]he purpose of free speech is warped to protect global corporations and block rules that would promote democratic governance.”

Obama’s attacks on freedom of the press have not gone unnoticed by media watchdogs.

Thanks to Obama’s heavy-handed treatment of the media, the U.S. is ranked an embarrassing 46th on the 2014 World Press Freedom Index, falling between Romania (45th) and Haiti (47th) out of 180 countries scored. The U.S. scores worse than Botswana (41st), United Kingdom (33rd), Ghana (27th), Canada (18th), New Zealand (9th), and Finland (1st).

Just last year the U.S. was ranked 33rd. The 13-place drop by the U.S., one of the biggest national declines over last year, was blamed “on increased efforts to track down whistleblowers and the sources of leaks.” The U.S. ranking has plunged from 20th since 2009 when President Obama was inaugurated.

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is preparing to reward its allies in the world of community organizing and give the left a big boost on the conservative-dominated radio airwaves.

The FCC is awarding broadcast radio frequencies made available by new technology that could lead to the creation of 1,000 left-wing radio stations as Steven J. Allen previously reported. Successor groups for the ACORN organizing network, which had operated several radio stations, and other Saul Alinsky-inspired community organizing groups could be awarded the lion’s share of the available licenses.

As the leftists at “Democracy Now!” cheered during the application period in the fall: “This means nonprofits, labor unions and community groups have a one-time-only chance this year to own a bit of the broadcast airwaves. It is being heralded as the largest expansion of community radio in United States history.”

The licenses to be issued by the FCC cover LPFM (Low Power FM) stations that will each cover a radius of around three or four miles. But many of the licenses will cover major cities, which means that a single station could reach 100,000 listeners, excluding people listening over the Internet.

As former Occupy Philadelphia spokesman Jeff Rousset gushed last year while applications were being accepted, “The work that we do over the next four months will really help shape the course of this country’s media landscape for the next 40 years.”

It is a fair bet that the radio stations that Rousset helps to establish won’t have anything to fear from Obama’s FCC.

Republican leaders need to stop worrying about reelection and start using their access to major media to boldly declare that a coup is underway, our freedoms are fading fast, and Obama is a Fascist dictator. The media can’t resist that kind of “suicide bomber.” The coverage would be intense, if the right people would say it.

Yes, it may get that particular politician in some trouble. It may cost him reelection, but we need to shock America awake before it’s too late, and it may be too late already.

I agree. If only any politician would stop worrying about polls and actually lead! The results would give whoever the poll numbers they are looking for. It would also give them the historical legacy their egos so desperately crave. All it would take is someone to step up and ride out the bad press of being a true leader.

Ironic then that the US is pressing Egypt to respect basic rights and freedoms as it goes ahead with the trial of Al Jazeera journalists.

Those would be Muslim Brotherhood terrorists and activists, and it’s been blatantly obvious since the obamessiah’s trip to Egypt back in 2008 that he is on the side of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Several years back Rush Limbaugh devised his 10 question “Kook Test” for the paranoid and the conspiracy-minded. Now Limbaugh is floating the idea that Obama might not step down January 2017, insisting there are more things he needs to accomplish. With this despotic U.S. president, nothing surprises me.

    • CapitalistPig

“Floats” might be a bit exaggerated. He’s fielded questions on the issue & postulated that Obama might feel he “needs” another term…..But I’m a fairly regular listener & I’ve never heard Limbaugh seriously advance that scenario………though even he adds himself “nothing surprises me with this President”.

      • wildjew

Maybe you are right. I don’t listen to Limbaugh as much as I did in the past after he [virtually] uncritically carried George W. Bush’s water for eight years. (I voted for Bush in 2000). Then he supported Mitt Romney. I saw Romney was unfit to be our nominee in the December 11, 2011 Iowa (primary) debate. Why didn’t Limbaugh see it?

float an idea: to suggest something informally to see if people accept it

pos·tu·late: suggest or assume the existence, fact, or truth of (something) as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or belief.

        Maybe we are spitting hairs?

        • CapitalistPig

Probably….I just don’t get the impression listening to him that he believes the Dems & Obama would mount a serious attempt at a third term, preferring to put all their eggs in a much more realistic H. Clinton basket. But he has 3 hours to fill so the subject does occasionally come up.
As to Bush, I thought Limbaugh was highly critical at times, especially the Medicare D & No Child Left Behind cave jobs & he, like many economists was critical of the housing policies that led to the meltdown-though he was quick to include that these were mainly of Democrat origins. (And that was before the crash.) But Bush, always wanting to “reach across the aisle blah blah blah” went along with them–much to his & our destruction. Rush was quite supportive of the Iraq war ……….I’ll give you that.
I voted for Romney……was he the best nominee? I don’t think there’s any question we needed a strong conservative & Romney just isn’t one……but to stay home gets you………….Obama.
Just like staying home in Florida 2000 nearly got you Al Gore.
About the only argument conservatives can make for staying home is….”Better to let it blow up in the Democrats face than to have a RINO in office & then have conservatism get blamed”—which I argue is what happened to Bush.

          • wildjew

I did very reluctantly vote for Romney in November 2012 (not in the primary; I voted for a proven conservative) but what was my choice in November? My priority issues are national security / foreign policy. On these issues Rush Limbaugh has no vision. His ignorance (or maybe cowardice is a better description) is appalling.

You might recall Limbaugh supported Bush on the Dubai Ports takeover or buyout much to the anger of his listeners. Limbaugh told his listeners he visited Dubai and it was a wonderful place. After Bush betrayed, he sold-out Israel, bowing to Saudi pressure (late August 2001, only days before the Saudi sponsored attacks on the US) to establish a Muslim-terror state in the Holy Land, Limbaugh for a brief moment protested and then he fell silent for seven long Bush-toadying years!

Bush (I voted for him in 2000) repeatedly lied about Islam calling it a religion of peace; the “terrorists” traitors to their faith when they were and are nothing of the sort. Limbaugh? Silence or worse, strong support for Bush’s lies by means of his silence. Limbaugh lost all credibility during the Bush years. (I should add, lost all credibility with me.) Were it not for George W. Bush and those like Limbaugh who strongly supported him, we might not have this Muslim-born nightmare in the White House.

          • CapitalistPig

I just never got that impression. You understand Dubai runs several ports (quite economically & efficiently) & had agreed to let us marble those ports with our security people–overt & covert & monitor them at our complete discretion? You’re certainly free to disagree with Bush & Limbaugh but that wasn’t an indefensible deal by any means.
I’m with you on the “religion of peace” BS Bush was spewing–& I’ve never heard Limbaugh agree with Bush on that point. These people are lunatics & to many Muslim societies simply will not man up & clean out their ranks. But liberals wlll tolerate NO criticism of Islam up to & including not even calling Islamic terrorism by name.
I’m not a “Limbaugh drone” who parrots whatever he’s fed, but the guy is funny, insightful & highly entertaining. I’ve disagreed with him but what else is out there in the media?…….especially in the 80s & 90s?. Limbaugh was pretty much it for airwave conservatism. You simply cannot listen to strong opinion 3 hours a day & not find something to disagree with. It just isn’t possible,
If I were to debate a clone of myself from 30 years back—I’d find a few points on which I’d disagree

          • wildjew

Way above and beyond President Bush’s apologetics on Islam was his betrayal of Israel, our only reliable friend in the region. Only days after the Islamic attacks on America, Bush came out with his vision (early October 2001) for the establishment of a Muslim-enemy state in Israel’s heartland. I wondered back then, “What gives?” Come to find out Bush cut a secret deal with Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince (now King) Adullah late August 2001. I did not know when I voted for Bush how much personal family wealth he and his father acquired over the years, doing business with the Saudis; the Carlyle Group, etc. Did you know when you voted for Bush? I did not know; stupid me. But I got up to speed within months.

Here we were attacked by devout Muslims who were Saudi proxies – the Muslim world was jubilant; Palestinians handed out candies and sweets in the streets of Ramallah, Gaza, etc. – and then days later Bush sells-out an ally to the Islamic jihadists and Rush Limbuagh was silent. Silence means complicity. Limbaugh was complicit with and supportive of George W. Bush and his treachery and it wasn’t just Limbaugh. This site was silent / complicit as well. So conservative supporters of Bush would ask me when I challenged them about Bush, “Would you rather have Al Gore?”

That’s not the point. I voted for Bush. I did not vote for Al Gore. Conservatives are rightly furious when we see leftists circle the wagons around Barack Obama and his un-Constitutional and illegal acts and YET that is the very thing we did with Bush.

            Didn’t we?

          • wildjew

You wrote: “But liberals will tolerate NO criticism of Islam up to & including not even calling Islamic terrorism by name….”

That is the test of a leader. Did Churchill worry about what the left (and many of his conservative colleagues) thought about his warnings and criticisms of Na zism and Hit ler during the nineteen thirties? Churchill was a “warmonger” and a “scare-monger” throughout the nineteen thirties as Germany swallowed up one small country after another. After nearly three thousand of Bush’s fellow citizens were murdered by Islam on 9/11/2001, he thought it a good idea to help Islam swallow up another tiny nation, Israel.

  • Donald J DaCosta

The question on the table is, where are the checks and balances that we were once assured would never allow this abuse of executive power in America? Obama is openly and deliberately fulfilling the one campaign promise he is dedicated to keep; “the fundamental transformation of America.” He is clever, devious and ruthless enough to realize that he could not accomplish this alone, or in one term in office, and has and is continuing to place radical leftists and Muslim Brotherhood connected individuals in key positions within his inner circle. Every facet of his agenda is becoming increasingly evident and it is not pro American or, for that matter, pro western. It is certainly not pro jobs, pro the poor, pro women, pro the middle class or pro the environment. as he continually professes are his primary concerns. Smoke and mirrors.

Meanwhile, the congressional membership, democrat and republican alike, and their respective leadership, whining, bickering and fearful of a vengeful, vindictive, ruthless, Obama enthralled, media unleashing their evil propaganda machine on them, do nothing to stop him or even attempt to focus the public spotlight on a political disaster of the latter’s own making.

If this administration’s lawlessness is not strenuously challenged it will achieve Barack Hussein Obama’s transformation objectives and it will not be the envisioned utopia perhaps expected by his supporters. It will be a progressive, socialist, communist flavored, one party dictatorship, an economic disaster and the American people will never have to worry about participating in legitimate elections again.

Don’t let them take away your guns! You may be needing them in the not too distant future.

Obama doesn’t lie only when hes trying to get his way. He lies even when he doesn’t need to. He simply lies. Deceptive is his normal. Whatever he says, more often than not, turns out to be the opposite of the truth: Obamacare, Keep your provider and doctor, Benghazi, The Respect for Marriage Act, Transparency, The fence on the US Mexico Border, First he was against homosexuality, then promotes it, the list is endless… Malignant narcissim is characterized by unsubmitted will. All adults who are mentally healthy submit themselves one way or another to something higher than themselves, be it God or truth or love or some ideal…They believe in what is true rather than what they would like to be true. In summary, to a greater or lesser degree, all (mentally healthy individuals) submit themselves to the demands of their own conscience. Not so the evil however… In one respect, the reason for Obama’s constant deception is obvious and understandable. Hes committed to leading a center right country to the Far Left. How could he possibly succeed if he were honest about where he really is heading? Only a small percentage of Americans would follow…So he lies. The Progressives have to shut down information and truth to be able to pull of their agenda!

Obama doesn’t have to tell the IRS to abuse its authority. It’s run by liberal Obamatrons. The idea there is some smoking gun e-mail or minutes of some meeting that exists where Oblamo tells the IRS “Skruw those TP groups” just isn’t going to happen. It’s the nature of liberalism. There isn’t a single scrap of paper in all the documents gathered after WW2 where Hitler or top Nazi’s tell anyone “kill the Jews” or that it was even the goal of the Final Solution.
They knew what to do…….. because they were Nazi’s.
And liberals know what to do……..because they’re liberals & the goal is acquisition of government power. Lois Lerner is/was a certified, rabid, partisan liberal who had no qualms or moral reservations about abusing her position either in her past or recent positions in the Federal government.
This recent incursion into our freedom will be no different. It’s liberalism………….nothings changed.

I’m sure your reaction would be just as blase if it were Bush operatives doing this at the IRS. I’m sure you would have no issue with Republican “political officers” patrolling the newsrooms of say, The Nation or MSNBC, assuring “balanced” coverage of his administration…..right?
No issues at all? “Tempest in a teacup?” Really?
So, let’s suppose, for instance, even a relative squish centrist gets eleted in 3 years like Romney—no complaints from justquitnow when the IRS starts stripping or denying unions, green scammer groups, LGBT, civil rights huckster/panderer/pimps of their tax exempt status? How thick do you think we are?

          • justquitnow

First of all…you guys have been binging on months of misinformation about this “issue”. I can’t even say…”well look at the facts” since you have your own. The groups in question weren’t denied their status….and I think the law should be enforced as it is written and most of these groups shouldn’t get the status anyway. But I can see you are a real confused partisan since you think Obama is a commie and Romney is a centrist….LOL

          • CapitalistPig

Facts are facts…the fact you choose to ignore them based on the idea someone with whom you disagree uses them doesn’t make those facts any less “factual”. They’re not “my own facts”….they’re just the facts.
Don’t deflect by going on about Romney/Obama’s place on the political spectrum.
If you won’t apply a standard of strict political neutrality to the IRS when Obama or a Democrat is in office—don’t complain when a Republican, rabid or centrist, comes in & abuses the process—-it’s your “standard” now. That’s what the IRS is now. Not the governments primary tool to collect & administer the US tax code–but a partisan club to bludgeon political opponents.

          • justquitnow

Really….the fact that organizations were examined before they were given special tax status is a partisan club to bludgeon political opponents. You’re a hysterical ninny.

          • CapitalistPig

Actually, they weren’t examined. They were arbitrarily picked out based on key words that are associated with political opponents (liberty, freedom, constitution, limited–dangerous, seditious terms like that) then those cases were put into “pending” status–meaning you couldn’t appeal because technically no decision had actually been made so there was nothing to appeal–then the cases were promptly buried. Of course meanwhile, liberal groups sailed through unencumbered. This is stone cold fact. I’m sorry it’s news to you.
Hopefully you’ll be as understanding when this becomes the norm & groups you agree with are given the same run around by the next batch in control of the IRS. Don’t complain if it happens to be a conservative. That’s your standard now.

        • Gislef

Are you disputing that the IRS didn’t do it, based on direct and indirect directions from Washington?

Or that they targeted all groups equally?

          • justquitnow

Didn’t do what? Look…just calling it “targeted” or “targeting”….who started that? Do you even remember where these allegations came from to begin with? Now after hearings and nonsense for months…what’s your takeaway? Does the lack of evidence of anything prove the point? Airtight. That’s a win win…when your dishonest allegations can become part of your reality even after being debunked or disproven. Look at all the dust and time wasting that has been kicked up by this.

Its not just that the federal government (representing exclusively lib interests) thinks this is a good and proper idea, but I can guarantee that the lib fellow travelers in the lib Lie Stream Media have no problem with it as long as it is only libs that get to make the decisions. That a general, universally applied concept would be dispatched in favor of lib-centric power in the form of a government boot stepping on the necks of political enemies seems surreal, but it should come as no surprise once you understand the depths that libs will sink to when crusading for their own personal power.

They tried this with the so called “Air America Network” financed in part by some Fanny Mae racketeers, it bombed miserably, and most of the hosts that failed there were given shows on MSNBC. Those were on AM radio, which has the largest theoretical broadcast area, and identified with talk radio. FM stations have a much smaller broadcast range and are identified with music programming, I doubt whether an FM audience will tune into flea powered versions of Air America, and anyone who thinks such stations will reshape the media landscape is a delusional dolt. This is the sort of garbage they have in North Korea, Kim Jr’s speeches and rants blaring out of public address speakers day in and day out, it becomes noise that nobody pays attention to.
To a certain extent the FCC can influence broadcasters with their observers, but it will be up to the courts and legislators to limit this. As for newspapers and internet, they have absolutely no authority to even be there, period.

No surprise with this marxist, black power racist, Chairman Hussein Obama. He said he was going to fundamentally change the country. His hero Saul Alinsky once said “the white middle class must be destroyed”. This is exactly what the racist rat Obozo is doing? He wants to make the U.S. a weak, 3rd world nation where whites are the minority who can be attacked in the streets by black gangs and have no police support to protect them. He has already started this with his open borders policy and his encouragement of the sucker punch game. He is destroying the military, just as Hitler destroyed the SA in the night of the long knives so his henchman will little power to oppose them.

LMAO !!!!! Somebody just might have the same kind of white leftist parents and grandparents as Obama and Melissa Harris (I shake it like a white girl) Perry. Another Soviet Chaika limo. Black on the outside and red inside through and through.

Yes, “he” is. And a fraud claiming to be a Catholic. But his Jew hating got the better of him in another thread. A Catholic would not claim that Israel at the time of Christ and prior that had not been a Jewish kingdom. But steevo did. He called it Zionist propaganda. That means that Catholic church is engaged in Zionist propaganda too, steevo. A-a-h-h.
