Tamera Mowry Is Not Alone

mowry-1113This made my heart ache and my blood pressure spike: Actress Tamera Mowry, who is black, wept in an interview with Oprah Winfrey over the vile bigotry she has encountered because of her marriage to Fox News reporter Adam Housley, who is white. Misogynist haters called Mowry a sellout and a “white man’s whore.” International news outlets labeled the Internet epithets she endured “horrific” and “shocking.”

Horrific? Yes. Shocking? Not at all. What Mowry experienced is just a small taste of what the intolerance mob dishes out against people “of color” who love, think and live the “wrong” way. I’ve grown so used to it that I often forget how hurtful it can be. Mowry’s candor was moving and admirable. It’s also a valuable teachable moment about how dehumanizing it can be to work in the public eye. Have we really sunk to this?

Young actresses in the 21st century forced to defend their love lives because their marital choices are politically incorrect? We’re leaning backward in the regressive Age of Hope and Change.

Let’s face it: Mowry’s sin, in the view of her feckless detractors, is not merely that she married outside her race. It’s also that she is so open about her love for a white man who — gasp! — works for reviled Fox News. Neither of them is political, but the mere association with Bad Things (Fox, conservatives, capitalism, the tea party, Christian activism, traditional values) is an invitation for unabashed hate.

The dirty open secret is that a certain category of public figures has been routinely mocked, savaged and reviled for being partners in interracial marriages or part of loving interracial families (for a refresher, see the video clip of MSNBC host Melissa Harris-Perry and friends cackling at the holiday photo of Mitt Romney holding his black adopted grandson in his lap).

And the dirty double standard is that selectively compassionate journalists and pundits have routinely looked the other way — or participate directly in heaping on the hate.

Have you forgotten? Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was excoriated by black liberals for being married to wife Virginia, who happens to be white. The critics weren’t anonymous trolls on the Internet.

They worked for major media outlets and institutions of higher learning. USA Today columnist Barbara Reynolds slammed Thomas and his wife for their colorblind union: “It may sound bigoted; well, this is a bigoted world and why can’t black people be allowed a little Archie Bunker mentality? … Here’s a man who’s going to decide crucial issues for the country and he has already said no to blacks; he has already said if he can’t paint himself white he’ll think white and marry a white woman.”

Howard University’s Afro-American Studies Chair Russell Adams accused Thomas of racism against all blacks for falling in love with someone outside his race. “His marrying a white woman is a sign of his rejection of the black community,” Adams told The Washington Post. “Great justices have had community roots that served as a basis for understanding the Constitution. Clarence’s lack of a sense of community makes his nomination troubling.”

California state Senate Democrat Diane Watson taunted former University of California regent Ward Connerly after a public hearing, spitting: “He’s married a white woman. He wants to be white. He wants a colorless society. He has no ethnic pride. He doesn’t want to be black.”

Mowry is not alone. The Thomases and the Connerlys are not alone. Poisonous attempts to shame are an old, endless schoolyard game played by bullies who never grow up and can’t stand other people’s happiness or success.

Time doesn’t lessen the vitriol or hostility. Take it from someone who knows. “Oriental Auntie-Tom,” “yellow woman doing the white man’s job,” “white man’s puppet,” “Manila whore” and “Subic Bay bar girl” are just a few of the printable slurs I’ve amassed over the past quarter-century. You wouldn’t believe how many Neanderthals still think they can break you by sneering “me love you long time” or “holla for a dolla.” My IQ, free will, skin color, eye shape, productivity, sincerity, maiden name and integrity have all been ridiculed or questioned because I happen to be a minority conservative woman happily married to a white man and the mother of two interracial children who see Mom and Dad — not Brown Mom and White Dad.

Mowry’s got the right attitude. She wiped away her tears and told Oprah that haters wouldn’t drag her down. Brava. Live, laugh, think and love without regrets. It’s the best revenge and the most effective antidote to crab-in-the-bucket syndrome.

It has nothing to do with Adam Housley being white. It does have everything to do with his employer. There wouldn’t be a peep if he were part of the Hollywood/ Rock Star/MSNBC mob.

  • American1969

A clear example of the “tolerance” of the Left. Keep this story in mind from now on when you hear some Regressive Liberal idiot making comments about racism in this country.
Kudos to Tamara and Adam and God Bless to you and your family.

  • Bamaguje

The attacks on Tamera Mowry and Clarence Thomas seem to be because of their conservative bent.
I don’t see the same attacks on the numerous other Black males who are involved with White women. In fact the pro-liberal Hollywood commonly depicts Black male/White woman love… although the reverse is rarely the case.

For conservatives in inter-racial relationships, it’s damn if they do, and damn if they don’t. If they avoid inter-racial entanglements they are racists. If they are involved in one, they are sellouts.

  • dougjmiller

Michelle, once again you hit the hammer on the head. Not only are you correct and informative, but your style is enjoyable prose. Don’t stop.

    • Marlin B. Newburn

Michelle is a national treasure, IMHO.

  • mattogilvie55

With all due respect to Mrs. Malkin, I have to disagree with the last paragraph. The best revenge is a 357 magnum hollowpoint right between the eyes. If I were Tamera Mowry’s husband, there is no way I would tolerate the things being said about her.

    • A Z

I would suggest a stage play/you tube video as social commentary.
I would name names. They can’t successfully sue if it is true. You are suggesting a one time action. I am suggesting that their name be made infamous for a few hundred years for their rude and uncivilized behavior.

If you carry personal surveillance, they’ll blab hatefully. they’ll not see the surveillance or many after a while will ignore it and blab hatefully away. There is your raw material for a stage play that will damn them for a long, long time.

      Sousveillance
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sousveillance

I would also suggest a duel for offenses given. It would limit how many people said such things.

    • PouponMarks

Too harsh. But very public flogging with lasting and visible scars would be fine with me.

  • cacslewisfan

What a sad and disgusting commentary of our time. I can’t believe the sickening thoughts the Left harbors. Then they are allowed to spew their hatred, and almost no one says anything. They do everything to keep racism alive.

  • A Z

The left wants to paint the Right as racist. This marriage goes against script. So individual leftists unbidden will try to split this couple up by making their life crap at all costs. If the couple divorces, many leftists will feel reassured that all is right with the world.

Another larger example is The Southern Baptists Leadership Council. It has a black president. You don’t hear about it. It goes against script, their historiography.

  • ott198089

The same people who smeared Judge Thomas for marrying a white woman, are now celebrating the progressive mayor of NYC Bill De Blasio for marrying a black woman.

    Talk about hypocrisy…

    • Marlin B. Newburn

      Amen.

  • Skeptic7

Democrats started the KKK. Democrats voted against civil rights – like Al Gore’s father. Democrats owned the slaves. Nothing’s changed – it’s still the dangerous destructive Democrats holding the black community back in their high crime neighborhoods, and low performance schools.

Since blacks are only 13% of the population, isn’t it more likely that some of them end up in relationships with someone outside their race if they are mingling in a diverse environment?

Race is a fake social construct anyway. It is not based in biology. Yet gender, which is based in biology, the liberals claim is fake. Liberalism is a hateful mental illness.

    • Seek

Utter nonsense. First off, the Klan started right after the Civil War, long before liberalism became established in the North much less the South. Second, Democrat and “liberal” did NOT mean the same thing in the Old South. Indeed, they usually meant the exact opposite. (People who opposed the Klan also were heavily Democrats, and not just JFK and LBJ).

As for the rubbish that race is merely a “social construct,” you’re as naive as anyone on the Left. Race is the main basis for forming human associations, whether marital, community or national.

  • bethgma

Tamera appears to be mixed race anyway. How is she supposed to know which race to marry unless she marries another mixed race person with the same skin tone? That is precisely why it is a bad idea to marry outside of your race, because the children will not have their own identity.

    • De Doc

Those twins are mixed race. Their mom is AA and dad is white. Big deal! Which race are they supposed to pair with then? Black? White? Only 50-50 Mulatto? This argument tends toward the ridiculous idea of the “One Drop Rule.” I’m sure many White Americans would be shocked to know that they too fall into that category once their DNA ancestry is tested.

What the one twin was subject to was unacceptable, because it was racism through-and-through. Only in this day it’s never racism when it comes from the black community. And there is decidedly political motivations for the bigotry here. She decided to marry a White guy who works for a well known conservative news network. If it was an MSNBC operative, we’d have heard nothing but effusive praise.

      • lyndaaquarius

exactly!. Isn’t the internet great? Every day more and more Americans are waking up to the ugly game that the Left has played on America. They will not increase their power in 2014.

  • http://www.themadjewess.com/ The Mad Jewess

Sorry.. But I 100% believe that MANY black people are just totally racist against whites

    • Bamaguje

Why are you sorry, when It’s true.

    • Prez Perez

And same goes for whites against black. You’re a genius!

      • Debbie G

I think Mad Jewess is pointing out that many blacks are just as racist as some whites. Don’t be so obtuse.

        • Prez Perez

Thanks Sherlock Holmes for pointing that out. You sure made a fool out of me. You probably shouldn’t assume that one’s responses, determines if a person is witty or keen.

          • Debbie G

I think you’re managing to make a fool out of you all by yourself. Have at it.

          • Prez Perez

Sorry YOU feel that way. Let foolery commence!

  • richarddonna

To be liberal today is to be racist. This article makes that fact all too clear.

  • De Doc

Kanye and Kim? Seal and Heidi? Ice T and Coco? No problem! Tiger Woods escaped criticism for a while, when he was the ever popular and apparently stain free sports icon, until he was caught dogging around with white call girls. His sin of course was claiming that he was multi-ethnic, rather than just ‘black’ during an Oprah interview years back. Stacey Dash was vilified for supporting Romney in 2012. America’s black community has a very ugly and authoritarian side to it when you don’t agree with their idea of perpetual victimization combined with a culture of handouts.

    • lyndaaquarius

until the Left sunk their claws into the black community for the Democrats power, the black community was extremely, extremely tolerant.Always was.

    • Prez Perez

Culture of handouts? Has nothing to do with this stick to the topic at hand.

    • Debbie G

Robert DeNiro and Grace Hightower, David Bowie and Iman. Hey, even Michelle Obama married someone who is half white.

  • ratonis

Pretty soon the Progressives will be agitating for laws banning inter-racial marriage.

    • Seek

Good for them. It means even the Left might get in touch with their family genes instead of going on trophy hunts looking to punish “racism” (i.e., “white racism).

  • hrwolfe

My favorite Malkin slam was when Oberman (Keith can’t find a job these days ) called you a bag of meat with lipstick, what an ass he is.

  • lyndaaquarius

wouldn’t it be a totally different story if her white husband was a well known, outspoken Lib defender of Obama? So,it’s all about political advantage.Where has Marxism ever created peace and prosperity?

    • http://www.facebook.com/aemoreira81 aemoreira81

Not really…non-political Hollywood celebrities in interracial marriages have received similar treatment…such as Taye Diggs.

  • glpage

So, Kaye West really wants to be white, at least according to the leftists who slandered Judge Thomas. Sure would be fun to see them explain, in person, why Kanye is an Oreo. And, then there was OJ and Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant and Ice T and (here’s a real good one) Van Jones and Charles Moose and Quincy Jones and Keenan Ivory Wayans and Scotty Pippen and Michael Jordan and Robert Griffin III and Charles Barkley and, well, this is getting old.

  • doruss03

What’s the matter with all the gossip? She is a smart looking woman, She is not black and she is not white, she is just normal.

  • Sherry

What color will there be in HEAVEN? None. It will be a real shock to all racists who believe their color is supreme or better than any other. THERE IS NO COLOR IN HEAVEN and therefore, there should be no discrimination of color HERE ON EARTH. Once mankind gets that thru their heads, maybe, just maybe this will be a better world. So, when someone begins to talk about these kinds of things, don’t throw a punch – JUST SHUT THEM DOWN and tell them there is no color in Heaven and therefore, NONE HERE. Then, walk away.

    • Prez Perez

I wish our country wasn’t built on color. Maybe then we could believe your “we are equal” rhetoric.

      • Debbie G

Seems to me you are the racist, still carrying the torch that this country was “built on color.” If you don’t believe you have equal opportunity here, I suggest you try somewhere else. Good luck with that.

        • Prez Perez

LOL. It’s the truth. Not racist. This country was built on prejudices and HAS yet to relinquish the ill it has caused. I don’t have equal opportunity here. My people did not START with equal opportunity. But I sure as h*** hold myself accountable for ensuring that I am treated equal, that the inequality in this country is dealt with. Your in denial and want to believe that this country was built on ALL great things.

    • Seek

There are, however, races here on earth. And for the time we remain alive, we have to deal with that fact — and celebrate it. As a white, I have no hesitation is taking pride in my race. A race-denying “conservative,” in the end, is no different than a race-denying liberal. Both are equally naive and stupid.

      • Stormy Alexandra Perez

Your race? What is your background your lineage?

  • Sherry

There is also NO LEFT OR RIGHT IN HEAVEN. Think about that one. And since living on this earth is such a TEMPORARY thing, I’d be thinking about my eternal life and how God will see the words that come out of a person’s mouth – ARE THEY PRAISE WORDS, OR HATE WORDS? IT IS YOUR CHOICE AND THAT WILL DEFINE WHO YOU **REALLY** ARE AS A PERSON and that will be how God sees you as well and where you will end up in eternity, WHICH IS A VERY, VERY, VERY LONG TIME. Much to consider here folks.

  • Marlin B. Newburn

The biggest threat to a liberal black person is a free thinking black person.

A black person marrying outside of their race is an open demonstration of a free-thinking black man or woman who is not bound by the chains of black toxic-tribal demands and dictates. God bless them.

These people have shown that they can’t be controlled – and that they’re free.

    • Debbie G

      Well said, Marlin.

      • Marlin B. Newburn

        Thanks, Debbie.

    • Prez Perez

Eh, not really. There are definitely bigger threats to “Liberal” Black Community. Racism, poverty, lack of education, institutionalized racism, slavery, the lack of emotional intelligence. This is not about control, and I am sure you will never understand what it is really about in the broader sense. This is just small caveat–choose what you will learn from it.

      • Marlin B. Newburn

You’ve learned all the critical buzz-words from the liberal, canned excuses and failure factory, I see. Well done.

Actually, you got one right. The lack of emotional maturity, see also “intelligence”, is rampant among most inner city black people. Black people, as a group (as their black overseers demand), have the emotional maturity level of a preadolescent, ages 8 to 12. Not surprisingly, that’s the emotional age level of chronic and violent criminals.

Much of the inner city black population is an infantalized group of people, and this is due to decades of liberals and other socialist-wannabes removing personal responsibility after their beloved social programs fail.

Race-hustlers have milked this fantasy, and they’ve made millions. All they needed was enough sock-puppets like you.

The problems in the black community – and soon to be Hispanic – are self-inflicted. But there’s no profit for you and your kind to take personal responsibility for your delayed adolescence. Call it, “fun with blaming.” You’ll prosper mightily.

Now go lead a demonstration asking for another handout. Our current governments, state and federal, will most certainly oblige you.

        • Prez Perez

Marlin you sound so angry. It is truly sad. You don’t know me from a can of paint and believe so much about a community, that I don’t even think you are a part of. Still that doesn’t mean you can’t comment but like I say there is a bigger problem–not just personal responsibility. I wish you knew me to know what I do. Just so you know so you can STOP assuming. I work with teenagers teaching them life skills- how to get a job, how to build a resume, hot to be professional. I make a change everyday. I don’t sit here on my computer talking to people like you for nothing. It’s part of bigger plan/picture. Sorry that your hatred for people you barely know causes you to literally attack and demean others. Easier to point fingers and blame people rather than looking at yourself and asking yourself “what am I doing to help?”

          • Marlin B. Newburn

Not angry in the least, child.

And by the way, you project mightily. What’s it like to be a case study?

          • Prez Perez

Answer my question and then I will answer yours: What are YOU doing to help? Second time asking

          • Marlin B. Newburn

Too busy with multi-tasking in the area of social pathologies. Your narcissism runneth over, child.

Is everyone supposed to answer you if you ask a question? Aren’t you special?!

You’d have to work decades to catch up to my experience. You’ll also have to grow up.

          • Prez Perez

Your too busy but you responded. Interesting. Couldn’t help yourself could you. I could of chosen your field but decided to persue other endeavours.Yea, everyone should answer my questions. Im just that relevant, so much so you HAD to comment. Btw my name is Stormy not child.
For me to be narcissistic I would have to be vain and do things for my own benefit. You obviously don’t know me. But please keep projecting your own shortcomings on me. I will bask in it. BTW none of this has to do with the article.

  • tickletik

There is a great deal of evidence that Neanderthals were highly intelligent, capable and emotionally sensitive, probably far more than even the best of so called “modern man”. And that it is actual Cro Magnon man that was the barbaric savage who defeated Neanderthal by virtue of superior numbers. There’s not much you can do when it’s 100-1 odds.

So, I would recommend giving your detractors the worst and most vile insult, that they are clearly pure r-selected herd-like Cro Mags

  • MLCross

Michelle Obama married a white man (if Tamera is ‘black’ even though she’s half white, then Barrack is ‘white’ even though he’s half black. Don’t look at me, that’s liberal math) and nobody criticizes her for marrying outside her race.

  • darkknight3565

Interesting how enlightened FrontPage readers are on the matter of race when charges of racism can be used against Progressives.

Too bad that same enlightenment won’t be present when Colin Flaherty posts another 3 year old video of a Black teenager punching a White women. Then we’ll start seeing the “Blacks are subhuman” comments again, I’m sure.

    • dennis x

      Thank you!

    • laura r

colin flaherty re-posts old vids as well as new vids. the reason is that not everyone reading the forums know the problem has existed for several years. i caught up this way, especially w/the situation in my old neighborhood. yes there is a difference between ghetto thugs & tamara. the left will find anything to critizise. they think interracial is only for them. then again it depends upon the day of the week, or the mood of the race baiter.

  • Seek

This actress is “black” only in the most nominal sense. Her racial features, as anyone can see, are almost entirely white. She certainly isn’t some ghetto “sistah”/”Shaniqua” type with a surly attitude, lacquered hair, and a fat rear end.

Malkin is trying to manufacture the “liberal racism” meme. It doesn’t work. How about it if she did something really audacious and started sticking up for whites for a change? Hey, she married one. THAT would be a conservative deed worth doing.

    • Debbie G

What a racist you are! According to your theory, all blacks live in a ghetto, are named Shaniqua, have lacquered hair and and a fat rear end. This article is about a conservative “mixed-race” couple that are being slandered for being just that.

      • Prez Perez

Huh? Where did I say that?

        • Debbie G

I believe I was responding to “Seek,” not you.

    • Prez Perez

Your ideology is the reason why people are ashamed to be who they are. Thank you, really thank you.

  • Dyer’s Eve

To Tamara and Adam – fight the good fight. Actually, you’ve already won, judging by the commie bile thown at you. You’ve done nothing wrong. You’re just human. I love ya! I wish you many happy decades together. Live long, live strong!

  • laura r

there are 2 interesting points here. one is that oprah featured her on the show, thats a good thing. the other is that interracial marriage/relationships is supposed to be the laft wing multi culti way. looks like it is only accepted if its 2 liberals who marry??
