Easy explanation as to why if you think about it.

Putin = former KGB, trained soldier
Obama = former pot head

Putin = real red-blooded man
Obama = gay

Putin = judo black belt
Obama = throws like a girl

Putin = patriot who loves his country
Obama = foreign intruder who hates the U.S.

Putin = at least he claims to be a Christian and believes in God
Obama = worships only himself

No contest really.

Could Russia annex Crimea ... and the rest of Ukraine ... if it didn't have the power to do so? You're thinking of yourself as an idealist, but your basic premise, in this thread, is that power is what matters.

Should the United States "give" Florida back to Spain, and the southwestern state back to Mexico? Shouldn't Mexico then be annexed by Spain? And then, shouldn't Spain give it back to the descendants of the Aztecs?

This is basically what you're saying. The reason the events in the second paragraph, above, won't happen, is because Spain and Mexico don't have the power to make it happen. Crimea is "Russian", today, because Putin's Russia has the power to make it happen, and the cowardly punk in the White House doesn't have the will or the guts to use superior American power to stop it.

You're arguing for power politics, and you don't even know it ...

"Mexico lost these lands, didn't they?" - Wolfthatknowsall.

No!! United States (or rather President Polk) got greedy, waged war against Mexico and grabbed the territories.
On the other hand Crimea and east Ukraine are historically part of Russia.

"Raw power... the power to wrench lands from other people through the use of military force" - Wolfthatknowsall.

Exactly!!
In clear violation of UN resolution 1244, United States led NATO to bombard and bully Serbia into giving up her ancestral land - Kosovo - to Albanian Islamist insurgents.

The U.S.illegally occupies Guantanamo which belongs to Cuba. The entire United States was seized from native Americans by European invaders.
So America has no moral authority to whine about Russia's purported land grabbing. More so that Crimea and east Ukraine are historically Russian.

Yes but unfortunately these people are not in power. Nobody is saying that Americans have gone soft, it's just that America is being run by cowards and traitors at the moment. The same with Britain, France, Sweden and so on. Hopefully people will eventually get their countries back, but in the meantime, though it saddens me to say, only Russia has a government patriotic enough to actually be standing up for its values. Putin is no angel, he is still a thug, but he's a thug I would rather have leading my country than a cravenly wanna-be thug like Obama who isn't tough enough to fight a real enemy but is quite happy to bully his own citizens..

So, power is all that matters, and not some idealistic vision that you may have. Raw power ... the power to wrench lands from other people through the use of military force.

Let's see, Mexico lost these lands, didn't they? They couldn't hold onto them. They don't have the power to reclaim them. Therefore, they don't belong to Mexico ... they belong to the United States, because it DOES have the power. I suspect that US power is what galls you ...

Doesn't Britain have a claim to the original thirteen colonies? Spain certainly "owns" Florida, by your logic.

"Are the Obamas now proud of this America? There has never been a time America has had less respect in the world."

Putin has pride in Russia. He is a staunch nationalist. At the same time he has added billions of dollars to his net worth since 1999. The Obama's have benefited financially in ways that most Americans cannot even dream of. Michelle's vacation trips alone will be the stuff of legend eventually, costing countless millions of taxpayer money.

But as for 'pride in America', the Obama's will leave office with even less pride in this country than when they entered the White House. Why? They never received the unanimous adulation they considered their 'right'.

Putin may be obnoxious in his authoritarianism but at least he loves his country, something you will never see from the authoritarian Obamas.

“Obama promised us that in exchange for appeasement we’d get Russian help reining in Iran."

Perhaps it's time for Obama to read a book about the history of WWII and how appeasement had a great deal in bringing it about. You miss a great deal when you only read Saul Alinsky, Karl Marx, and other anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, anti-white and anti-western literature. One wonders, exactly how DO leftists and progressives understand (or not) the origins and causes of WWII?

They focus on Hitler's fascism but ignore Chamberlain's appeasement!

"This is not a surprise for a man who has said that the collapse of the Soviet empire “was the greatest geopolitical catastrophe of the century.”

Everyone uses this quote to show Putin as a communist revanchist.With all sincerity, I have gone back and read the context of the quote and it seems it did not mean that the collapse of communism was the great catastrophe, but the geo-political implication of a uni-polar world was the catastrophe.
We heard him say, the collapse of the Soviet Union was a tragedy. If we look behind the words it was a tragedy for Putin not because it was the death of Soviet Communism, but because it was a setback for Russia.
Russia is not rebuilding a Soviet Union but a Russia something much closer to the old Russian Empire with a destiny and "exceptionalism" of its own. We see it in Putin’s rejection of everything in liberal decadent post Christian Western culture as alien to Russia and emphasized the importance of Russian Orthodoxy in Russian life.When Putin speaks about why Russia is justified In absorbing Crimea, he didn’t didn't use Soviet Communist language. He didn't hesitate to cite the deepest roots of Russia’s identity, history and pride. This is the location of ancient Khersones, where Prince Vladimir was baptized. His spiritual feat of adopting Orthodoxy as the foundation of the culture, civilization and human values that unite the peoples of Russia.
It seems to me that those who use this one quote see an attempt to revive the Soviet Union in get it wrong.
