In Phoenix, you can put a legal taxi on the streets for the price of the equipment, insurance, and the cost of getting a weights and measures sticker. Of course, we do not have the large customer base that NYC does, but then we do not have all those toll roads and bridges. An enterprising drive with some regula personals can do quite well. The large companies have online ordering etc, but I personally think automated systems are not all they are cracked up to be. I see too many errors and problems with them. At Sunrise Cab, we are low tech and it works out real well. Especially when we are the cheapest cab in the Valley.

More buses in NYC? You must be kidding. These ones too are unionized and you may use them, sure, as I did for 14 years... only don't be in a hurry, don't be expected anywhere, don't have a train to catch, especially when it rains hard, or when it snows... or whatever. And make sure you don't have to go somewhere when they have shut down for the day.

As to air pollution, try to breathe while the bus is moving from the curb and you are stuck waiting for the green light!

Not to mention the successive fare increases. I remember once when someone at MTA ordered a whole fleet of inoperative, unsafe buses that were quickly abandoned. Who do you think had to pay for a new fleet? Why, us customers, of course.

Anything a union puts its paws on is doomed.

Interesting article......imo.
If the Unions had any real brains they would understand that the key to their long-term survival is adapting and embracing new methods----you know, the way the private sector has to do to survive.
Instead they are digging trenches and trying to halt progress---and as consumers of those industries we are all in for a rough ride.
Perhaps the membership of various Unions will realize that if the want to survive in the long term they will have to change. Of they will choose slow, gradual, extinction.
