50 Years After ‘None Dare Call It Treason,’ David Horowitz Rises to the Occasion

Fifty years ago, in 1964, a Korean War veteran, electrical magazine editor, and self-taught expert on Communism named John Stormer published None Dare Call it Treason. It eventually sold 7 million copies.

The premise of the book was fairly simple: there are high-ranking people in America that are in fact the enemies of America and as a movement do everything in their power to sabotage our battle against totalitarianism. Yet, nobody is willing to identify these people for what they are: Traitors. And no one will call what these traitors are doing for what it is: Treason.

That is no longer true, thanks to David Horowitz and his new book The Great Betrayal, Volume III of The Black Book of the American Left. “Treason as a moral rather than a legal issue is not difficult to define,” he writes. “Treason is when your country is at war and you want the other side to win.”

In an article written and posted on September 11, 2001, Horowitz threw down the gauntlet:

Americans are unwilling to recognize that much of the world hates us, and will continue to hate us because we are prosperous, democratic and free. Today’s tragedies must be a wake up call.  It’s time to remember that the first duty of government is to provide for the common defense. …

It’s time for those on the political left to rethink their alliances with anti-American radicals at home and abroad.  It’s time for the President to identify the monsters who planned the day of infamy, and then to carry out a massive military strike against them and any government who sponsored these acts. In sum, it is time for a new sobriety in America about what is at stake in the political battles with those who condemn America as an ‘oppressor’ nation and the ‘root cause’ of the attacks on itself.  It is time for Americans who love this country to stand up in her defense.

The attitude he was referring to came into clear view a few weeks later, on November 7, 2001, when Bill Clinton gave a speech at Georgetown University that, Horowitz writes, “ranks as one of the most disgraceful utterances to pass the lips of a former American president. Without any acknowledgment of his own responsibilities as commander-in-chief, Clinton joined America’s enemies in attempting to transfer the blame for the atrocities to his country. ‘Those of us who come from various European lineages are not blameless,’ he explained, reflecting sentiments made familiar by American appeasers since the [Communist-controlled Henry] Wallace campaign of 1948.”

The view that America is the bad guy of the world is what drove the radical Left (including Clinton and the majority of the Democrats) to dismantle America’s military and intelligence defenses in the pre-9/11 era.

In light of these unprecedented attacks, did the Democrats rise to the challenge? Of course not. They pretended to be hawkish patriots for two years – including voting to destroy the enemy regime of Saddam Hussein which we now know did, in fact, have Weapons of Mass Destruction and connections to Al Qaeda – but, as Horowitz recounts:

The global protesters failed to stop the British and American military effort or save Saddam’s regime, which fell six weeks after the initial assault. This victory put an end to the filling of mass graves by the regime; it shut down the torture chambers and closed the prison that Saddam had built for four to twelve-year-olds whose parents had earned his disapproval. But Saddam’s forces were not entirely defeated. They regrouped to fight a rearguard guerilla campaign against the American “occupiers.” At the same time, the organizers of the anti-war protests continued their efforts, this time in the arena of electoral politics. Their activists marched into the Democratic presidential primary campaigns to support the candidacies of anti-war Democrats Dennis Kucinich and Howard Dean.

The enormous resources in money and manpower that the activists mobilized against the war transformed the campaign of an obscure governor of Vermont into the Democratic frontrunner. Dean condemned America’s war in Iraq; he hinted that as president he would make peace at the earliest possible opportunity and withdraw American forces from the Gulf. Electoral politics thus became the left’s rearguard attempt to produce the result their pre-war protests had failed to achieve: an American defeat in Iraq.

Thus it began, in June of 2003, that the Democrats realized that their false patriotism endangered their standing with the America-hating base of the Democratic Party and (with the notable exceptions of Joe Lieberman and Dick Gephardt) turned on the war nearly all of them voted for. Without hesitating, they stabbed the troops they sent into battle in the back. “You can’t tell a 19-year old, who is risking his young life in Fallujah and is surrounded by terrorists who want to kill him, that he shouldn’t be there in the first place; that he’s with the ‘bad guys,’ the aggressors, the occupiers who have no moral right to be in Iraq,” Horowitz wrote in 2008. “You can’t do that and not threaten his morale, encourage his enemies, deprive him of allies and put him in danger. And that is exactly what the Democrats have done – and all the Democrats have done – for five years of America’s war to deny the terrorists victory in Iraq.”

The defining moment that proved whose side the Democrats were on came in 2007, when President Bush, recognizing the errors made, shifted to a Counterinsurgency plan referred to as “The Surge.” The plan was a dramatic success, accomplishing its twin goals of breaking the back of the various Islamist insurrections and creating an unprecedented atmosphere of security for the Iraqi people. But the Democrats were desperate to undermine our military, shown most infamously when General David Petraeus was preparing to testify to Congress on the progress made. A Democratic Senator told Politico, “No one wants to call [Petraeus] a liar on national TV… the expectation is that the outside groups will do this for us.” And within a few days, the Democrats’ activist arm, MoveOn.org, published a full-page advertisement in the New York Times under the blaring headline: “General Petraeus or General Betray us? Cooking the books for the White House.” In fact, the Times gave MoveOn.org a 64% discount to run the smear. The Democrats knew what they were saying wasn’t true. We now know this thanks to Robert Gates in his memoir Duty. In a meeting between Secretary of Defense Gates, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, President Obama and other administration officials on October 26, 2009, “Hillary told the president that her opposition to the surge in Iraq had been political because she was facing him in the Iowa primary. She went on to say, ‘The Iraq surge worked.’ The President conceded vaguely that opposition to the Iraq surge had been political. To hear the two of them making these admissions, and in front of me, was as surprising as it was dismaying.”

Our troops triumphed regardless, so that once Obama came to power, he needed a way to undo these achievements without making it obvious. He did so by sabotaging the Status of Forces negotiations, orchestrating parliamentary obstacles where there previously had been none. As the great Fouad Ajami wrote in the Wall Street Journal before his untimely passing, “Obama’s rush for the exit and [then-Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al] Maliki’s autocratic rule ensured that much hard-won progress would not last.” America’s security position is the worst it has been in generations, and the bloodbath we see today is the fruit of the Democrats’ betrayal.

Fifty years ago, John Stormer wrote:

There is much to be done if America is to block communist domination of the world. Much of the work is up to you. First, you must educate yourself. Determine that the facts in this book are true. Then, alert and educate others. Stay informed – and start to act. Join with others who are already well-organized for the battle against communism.

In a slightly different form, these words could have fit nicely in The Great Betrayal. Horowitz is a veteran of the ideological wars against both the Communists and the Jihad. He knows what he’s talking about.

    Excellent summary.

“Treason as a moral rather than a legal issue is not difficult to define,” Horowitz writes. “Treason is when your country is at war and you want the other side to win.”

“It is time for Americans who love this country to stand up in her defense.”

The question stands as to how to deal with traitors and battle against generic communism. True leadership, bloodshed, or both?

A spirited opposition may well ensure some violence. So be it. If we roll over and let the Left have their way, there will be violence anyway, as they take revenge on political enemies, and that most certainly includes the people who frequent FPM. Ferguson was all about scaring people into compliance. Violence is already being used by the Left.

The Tea Party scared the Left. We need to coalesce around issues that most people hate. Obamacare and illegal immigration/invasion are two such issues. Ebola and ISIS are also losers for Imambama. We need people back in the streets and pissed off, not afraid of Obama or Holder, and not afraid of the Left’s professional nihilists.

The Right has no choice but to eat, breath, and sleep politics, like the Left does and has been doing for decades. We won’t turn this around by sending $25.00 to our favorite candidate and voting. We can’t outsource the running of the country to politicians we inherently, and mistakenly, trust. The problems this nation faces are a direct reflection of the apathy and ignorance of the electorate over many years. We need to remind our politicians constantly that their stay in DC is highly conditional. That is the antidote to the much discussed RINOs.

David Horowitz is a modern day Paul Revere, but his warnings have fallen for too long on ears clogged with denial and more than a little arrogance. The hue and cry must be amplified, all day, every day, in any way we can. Praying would help, too.

I agree. The global war of ideologies is reaching critical mass and people in this country will be forced to make some very serious decisions. Those of us that respect Constitutional
law and a culture influenced by Judeo-Christian values need to pursue the rule of law as long as possible. Treason and the psychology of hate, greed and indifference will wreck our system of checks and balances and finally force the hand of violence. I use to think it was only a possibility, now I believe it’s inevitable.

I put a lot of effort towards the last election, put a lot of money up front. Not just towards Alaska’s US Senate candidate, but the NRA too. I met with now Senator Dan Sullivan three times before he was elected. After my first visit with him I realized he was the only candidate that could beat Mark Begich (D) who was heavily financed by the DNC – Harry Reed. If there’s any hope for Congress to repair our Republic, Sullivan will be an asset to the team.

The everyday horror that surrounds us defies logic. But then, evil has it’s own reasons. Many people possess the intellectual capacity and potential to make this world a hundred times better than it is, if they had the right leadership. Which brings up the question, who or what are they led by now? Morals, logic, or emotional instinct?

We desperately need leaders and during the interims we need the Paul Reveres. Horowitz and the writing staff at Frontpage are doing a great job. I wouldn’t visit this site otherwise. Prayer? It’s the best of human consciousness but recently I have more questions for God than my lasting gratitude.

        100% correct.

    • sendtheclunkerbacktochicago

Horowitz has done amazing work but he MISSED the mark by not helping true patriots in their efforts to expose what happened leading up to this Fraud in Chief becoming President. There is provable FRAUD that occurred and Horowitz refuse to touch it. The fact that someone used FRAUD to advance into the presidency DURING WAR is TREASON Mr. Horowitz. Barry Soetoro (aka Barack Hussien Obama) could have been stopped before he was nominated and for sure after he released that April 27th, 2011 computer generated forged birth certificate recognized as such faster than they recognized the Dan Rather forgeries. Congress and the Media allowed that CRIME to go unchecked. Shameless

      • camp7

I can’t answer for David Horowitz but the rest I agree with. We were set-up when Holder slipped through the cracks and was nominated by BO for Attorney General and approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. Under Holder’s control of the DOJ and a Democrat controlled Senate, BO was protected from impeachment. And yes, an obvious crime at the top of the list. I’d love to see an impeachment process started on BO and HO just to slow down the damage their doing to this country, regardless of the final outcome.

        • Hetty T

Impeachment is for a validly sitting official. The imposter/usurper should be arrested and charged for his many crimes. The $64,000 question is, who’s going to do it, especially now that the top ranks of our military have been purged.

          • camp7

It would be gratifying to see Obama in a bright prison jumpsuit. We’ll see if the new Republican Senators make a difference come January, although I’m not holding my breath.

At 76, how does one battle communism?
I believe this is really a battle of Evil [those who are Satanic] versus Righteousness [those who are Godly] and communism is just a subset of the atheists.
The most obvious enemies are the followers of the Koran who are mandated to hate every Godly attribute. Eg: Koran is void of ‘Agape Love’, ‘forgiveness’. ‘restoration of a person who denied their faith’, ‘anything resembling the 10 commandments’. At the same time the Koran encourages their faithful to use lies, deceit, false promises and not honoring contracts, agreements and treaties with the infidels if they can benefit from it.
It should be mandatory that every student and parents study the one page proof and evidence http://www.GodAuthoredBible.com and then use it to evaluate other books from which people receive their authority for truth.

Part of the reason that treason is never prosecuted in this country are the “undeclared” wars. In WWII, FDR received a blanket declaration of war on Japan and Germany. He then proceeded to incarcerate Japanese-Americans, read private mail, and prosecute people for treason. And we won. Then those programs were terminated. If Congress had given W. Bush a declaration of war, against Al Qaeda and its supporting enterprises, until the threat was rendered harmless, those government employees that went public with several classified anti-terror programs to track the finances, and communications of Al Qaeda, could have been vigorously prosecuted. In a declared war, a president attains tremendous power to destroy the enemy – foreign AND domestic.

This is exactly what the GOP needs to do for the next 6 months. Isolate and demonize ALL democrats. Ridicule them mercilessly like McCarthy on steroids to plant the seeds of distrust (as Alinsky would say) and wrap socialism/communism/treason around the necks of the progressive movement as a whole. While naming names!
Point out also the Obamacare-ism of all portions of our society. How the progressives have put Grubers (read czars) into every department of the federal bureaucracy to suppress freedom of ALL citizens.
Do a 6 month intense campaign – then just concentrate on jobs, and the economy until the election. The American people (especially us here in IL) can see for themselves the empty store fronts in our towns. We know the economy is NOT getting better – nor our lives.

    • Hetty T

The GOP will not do those things, Infantryman. There are simply too many RINOs who are already talking about reaching across the aisle when the new congress is convened. Then, there’s the dirty secret that many of them are aware of the fraud in the WH, which makes them complicit in treason. These RINOs are waiting, hoping that they’ll make it through the next two years peacefully and usher the imposter to the exit door.

      • truebearing

Complaining about RINOS accomplishes nothing. Take action to see to it people are informed, warned, and prepared to take action. The RINOs will blow with the wind, and they can be replaced, if enough people act instead of expecting someone else to correct the problems.

        • Hetty T

Something else has to happen because the primaries are controlled by the parties (of course) and we just get more RINOs on the ballot. The GOP needs a transfusion of fresh blood; don’t much care what the democoms do.

          • johnnygeneric

Hetty, you are…RIGHT. The answer is not in the GOP as it is presently composed.

        • MLCBLOG

I think she’s just pointing out a true fact that we all know. RINOs are a real problem right now.

Even Limbaugh was saying today Didn’t we just win an election? and these guys are still acting like we lost!

            yw Hetty.
Went looking for a copy around a year ago.
They’re out there, but some I saw looked overpriced.
Just read it for free on that site, and copy what you want.
What I like about that book, is the quotes from political and big business heavyweights back then.
The author only mentions Bilderberg on a single page-that being because not that much was even known of them at the time-in ’71, when the book went to print.

These goings-on now that Mr. Hanson writes about in this article, just can’t make you not think of that book you’re looking at now, can it?
It sure doesn’t for me, anyway… :oI

What the GOP and the Conservative media need to do is expose the most dangerous “sleeper cell” in America’s history, the one that is most protected, 1600 Penn Ave. They need to do this before this domestic enemy is allowed to walk out the front door in January 2017. If he is never charged for his fraudulent crimes and walks we will have schools named after this fraud, highways named after this fraud, airports named after this fraud, navy vessels named after this fraud, hospitals named after this fraud, etc when in fact OUT HOUSES should not be named after this fraud. That scares me more than him continuing on his path to crush our economy. We have ignored the rotten apple in the barrel long enough and we cannot continue to allow him to get away with his crimes. It looks as though Congress is willing to allow this piece of crap to cruse through to January 2017 and what a tragedy that will be.

  • cree

The democrat’s changing to opposition to the war for only political reasons became actually opposition to the political right’s position of unity for the whole country in its defense against its enemies. In other words, political gain and disunity should take precedence, dividing the nation, falsely supporting the military and giving credence to America’s enemies when none is due, which persists to this day. Political posturing by changing or believing falsely who is to blame is treason to the American people when facts disprove America’s guilt beyond doubt. And tragically, a faction of America’s enemies are Americans.

    • MarilynA

Just what did you think Ted Kennedy was doing when he corresponded with the Soviet Leaders and the KGB, asking for recommendations and assistance in blocking Ronald Reagan’s agenda? When the KGB files were finally made public the Correspondence between Kennedy and the KGB was made public. However, few people have ever heard of it. Ted Kennedy was a traitor. The question is. Was his brother’s JFK and RFK traitors too?

      • Daniel

        Absolutely correct.
What I really like about how Ted Kennedy’s collaboration with the KGB came to light is the way it happened by accident.
The human rights group, Memorial, devoted to finding the whereabouts of Gulag prisoners for their surviving relatives demanded that the KGB archives be opened to the public when the USSR collapsed.
        What did they find?
Ted Kennedy and KGB collaboration against Reagan and the US.
Brutalized Russian citizens attempting to get some peace over their long lost relatives and destroyed lives uncover the complete moral bankruptcy of an American LIBERAL icon.
Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, the man who brought GULAG to world consciousness, has a famous quote……..”One word of truth outweighs the world.”
        And here we see it.

      • cree

Yes, read about good ole boy Ted. He being a Senator was traitorous enough but a president? New SALT treaty etc.

        • Hetty T

His trademark legislation was the Immigration ‘reform’ act of 1965 which he pushed through Congress. It eliminated the quota system for largely Western European countries and gave us this mess of Third Worlders that have come in by the millions ever since. I’m talking about the legal ones.

          • cree

Worst of all, the consequences evidence over many decades is that leftists refuse and/or are unable to see let alone admit to the errors of their ways. It becomes only the leftist ideology’s intent rather than the intent’s results that continually drives their existence that they impose on people to their detriment rather than benefit.

I recently re-read “None Dare Call it Treason – 25 years later. Stormer in on target in every way. I am 82 years old and have been in politics since I was 12 and I have seen and heard about most of the things Stormer covers but have not had the back story which he gives. Thanks for this article. This book is still available from Amazon and everyone should read it.

I’ll have to add “None Dare…” to my booklist. I just finished “Witness,” by Whittaker Chambers. Most Americans have no idea how long communists have been in high places in Washington DC.

      • Scar

If you haven’t already read it, I recommend “Suicide of the West” (1964) by Jame Burnham. It has been years since I read it, but it’s a conservative classic that, I’m quite certain, still rings true today.

        • Debbie G

Thanks Scar. Of course, Mr. Horowitz’s “Black Book of the American Left” is on the priority list! So much to read, so little time….

      • MarilynA

Whittaker Chambers biography is a perfect explanation of the history of the 20th century. After reading it, I understood exactly what was going on and how they had infiltrated our government from 1932 when our first Communist/Socialist president was elected, up until today.

The problem is reaching the public. Many reasons: Personal
and family problems distract from concentrating on other issues. After a stress full existence during the day the public wants to take their minds off of problems in general so go to diversions ;. also since the media filters the news the public is unaware. The left has labor unions, student organizations and etc to force the issue on people who can be activated. It is possible to reach the public but it is labor intensive.

As Ann Coulter said (paraphrase), “Vietnam is Liberals’ favorite war because America lost.” There is nothing the Left won’t do to ensure America loses not only wars but the standing in the world that goes with being the only superpower. They are still so angry that the Soviet Union, the Left’s favorite country, fell apart, disproving everything the Left believes in. God, do I hate these people.

    • MarilynA

This is true. I was on the board of directors of a national ” The vast majority of the other board members were running around with long faces and when it became apparent that their aim was “to unite all dissident groups and empower them to overthrow our government and replace it with communism,” I asked them why they thought it would work here when it had just failed there. their answer was, They weren’t practicing it right. when practiced in it’s true form it will work.” Remember, those 60′s radicals were running around waving Chairman Mao’s Little Red Book, not the Communist manifesto. Bill and Hillary Clinton were an integral part of the 60′s movements. That is the reason Bill Clinton propped up Chairman Mao’s China by giving them most favored nation status which allowed them to dump their slave labor made goods into this country tariff free. He knew that by taking that action he was transferring our manufacturing base to China because the Chinese government could say what it’s laborers were paid. From the actions of todays Democrats, I think it’s safe to say that the Democrat Party is now the communist party. .

      • truebearing

Absolutely. And Obama ran as a Communist in his first election in Chicago. He ran as a Democrat, but also a New Partian, which was a disguised communist party. Dual candidacy was one of the Left’s schemes to take over the Democratic Party. It was struck down by the Supreme Court, but they found another way to do it.

The greatest act of treason was the decision by Southern Democrats
to start the Civil War so wealthy plantation owners could people enslaved.

    • johninohio1

You view everything through the filter of white on black racism, which makes you narrow minded and self absorbed.
The issue at hand is not what was the greatest act of treason or any debate about it. What do you have to say about the treason of leftists in this country in the present? Are you an American, or are you an American African?

    • truebearing

Keeping people of any race enslaved is an abomination, but hundreds of thousands of Northerners sacrificed life and limb to end that horror show. We are dealing now with another attempt at enslaving people, only this time it will include vastly greater numbers of people being enslaved, and if we don’t stop it now, there won’t be a North to rescue us.

It is important that you stop living in the past. it can’t be changed. We are fighting for the future now, and it will take every white, black, brown, yellow, and red man we can muster.

    • MarilynA

Give me a break. When Lincoln was elected, every man and boy over 16 in the south grabbed his gun and went to war. Not everyone in the south owned slaves and it is not in human nature for a man to be willing to sacrifice everything, including his life so the rich guy down the road can keep his slaves. Lincoln was the candidate of the big money men in the North East and he didn’t promise to free the slaves. He promised to double the 1832 25% tariff on imported goods to 50%. When the 25% tariff was passed to force Southerners to pay the inflated priced of northern made goods when goods from Europe were cheaper, SC refused to collect it. Andrew Jackson sent 3 warships to Charleston and SC backed down because none of the other Southern states agreed to back them up. But when that tariff was doubled, every Southern state decided they had had enough and joined SC in seceding. Lincoln. like Bill Clinton, never got more than 43% of the votes due to a 3rd party candidate running. Once again the civil War was not about slavery. It was about taxes.

      • Hetty T

It’s truly a pity so few know what you are saying. Slavery was only a minor cause for the war, but an integral one for most of the Southern states. Young Southerners did not carry the rifle to protect the ‘chattel’ of the few (less than 7%) wealthy planter class that had them. And the corollary, no young Yankee walked hundreds of miles into the South, enduring the elements, hunger, disease, and great danger, to make Southerners free their slaves.

The tariffs enacted by Congress were but one of the indignities forced upon the region by the big money in the northeast. Lincoln was one of their proteges; he shares responsibility for starting the war. For, but one example, he refused to receive the emissaries from S.C. that were sent to meet with him. The Southerners were fighting for the same things their (and our) founders fought for against King George–deliverance from an overweening and capricious “rule,” in this case, by the Congress.

There was lots more to each state’s secession documents than the mention of slavery, although it’s included in each. You need to read the entire document.

          • MrUniteUs1

Slavery was the overriding issue and as you stated included in each.
Slavery was the overriding issue in the years leading up to the Civil War.

Communism and Islam joined forces against the West long ago. This is why Hillary/Abedin and Obama/Jarrett(Iranian). Traitors comitting Treason due to a FREE AMERICA being a thorn in the foot of ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT. Dangerous times.

I’m a big David Horowitz fan, but the 50-year reference is a little off. Ann Coulter wrote a book called Treason a few years ago. It conveyed the same subject matter.

Horowitz deserves credit for having the guts to come out and say what many people are increasingly coming to believe.
That President Obama is really the culmination of 50 years of radical, leftist, ANTI-AMERICAN(mainly anti-white) activism.
Obama and his DEM operatives are a symptom of a terminal psychological disease that the US will not survive in its present form.
Why would any US president allow ISIS radicals to return from jihad and live in the US?
Why would he allow flights to and from Ebola epidemic zones to continue into the US when other countries immediately halt such flights?
Why is he attempting to dismantle American police forces to enable and assist black street thugs?
Why is he importing hundreds of thousands of Latino teenagers with ties to the ruthless Mexican drug cartels like Los Zetas?
Why did he refuse to deport 36,000 CONVICTED illegal alien felons and release them into communities around the US?
Obama lacks the honesty and courage to be a straight up radical or jihadist. He does his destruction under the cover of plausible deniability which his DEM henchmen provide for him.
Decent Americans are being destroyed by their government everyday. You think a lot of clever debates and an election will save you and your kids………grandkids?
Decent, tax paying, law abiding Americans only have one chance:
RESISTANCE at the state level……..and if necessary…..the gun.

‘Progressives’ know that; that’s why they want our firearms.

Democrats, the party of slavery in 1860 and the party of slavery today…..,
