Obama tells Israel that he’s “got your back,” but he doesn’t even have America’s.

Teddy Roosevelt advised world leaders to “speak softly but carry a big stick.” Our current-day President seems to have gotten that backwards.

When Edward Snowden surfaced in China with a laptop full of America’s deepest secrets, President Obama openly warned the Chinese there’d be a big problem if they refused to hand him – and our stuff – over, but Peking was unfazed, and packed the little turncoat off to Russia. The Russians were then told – publicly – that Obama “expected” them to extradite the leaker, but Putin just glared back and then poor John Kerry was dispatched to do the low bow: “We are not ordering anybody. We are simply requesting.”

In the end, when everyone saw that Obama’s America had its bluff so easily called, and was seen as powerless to move nations that once treated us with respect, our President slinked away: “I’m not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29-year-old hacker. We’ve got other business to do.”

Now go try that in the schoolyard, and see how many toughs rush in to test your will. Obama keeps telling Israel that he’s “got your back,” but he doesn’t even have America’s. What could be more transparently supine than to call a man who is exposing America’s top secrets “a 29-yearold hacker” – just because you can’t snatch him back? Aesop had a fabulous fable about the fox calling those out-of-reach grapes “sour.”

When you “lead from behind,” when you speak loudly but don’t even want to carry a stick, you stand exposed as the “paper tiger” that Mao said we were. The same American impotence is evident throughout the Middle East. Roughly 100,000 Syrians have been killed, but we’re on the sidelines. Iran is daily closer to getting a nuclear bomb to incinerate the Jewish state and Obama repeats – “We’ve got your back.” Iran, it was revealed last week, is developing the missile capability to send a nuke all the way over here — but not a peep from the White House. Lebanon is lurching toward civil war. Jordan – the peaceful, stable Arab state – is now acting nervous. The Christians in the Middle East are in danger of being driven out, or into mass graves – not even one word from the President. An enormously destabilizing tragic and bloody Sunni-Shiite war is breaking out across the Muslim world with a possible death toll that is simply unimaginable.

Helpless in the midst of all this, Obama and Kerry, looking for something that makes them seem less than impotent, turn to focus now on the Israeli-Palestinian “peace process.” They’re like the drunk who searches for his lost keys – not where he dropped them, but under a random streetlamp, because that’s where there’s light. Obama thinks his stick is still big enough to prod Israel.

The cudgel? The “two-state solution” – a policy that, to put it generously, stands on wobbly postulates and offers wild promises that amount to a cure for worldwide political cancer. Shrinking Israel, the two-staters claim, and giving the Palestinian Arabs a nation-state, will bring peace between Arabs and Jews, make Israel more secure, and placate the inflamed Islamic world. It’s a hundred times more likely that creating a Palestinian state next to Israel would do the exact opposite of every one of these promises. The “two-state solution” would surely backfire.

It totally misreads the conflict: Peace-loving people so much want the war to be about borders – because such a conflict might yield a reasonable compromise; but Islam’s roots are much deeper than Arab nationalism, and a fundamental tenet of Islam is that infidels may not have self-rule in any part of the Waqf – the Muslim realm. Arafat feared he’d suffer the fate of Sadat, and so refused to agree to Jewish sovereignty. With Hamas at his back, Abbas has already said the same. (Two-staters discount this, as they do all the other evidence that challenges their dreams.)

But even if an Abbas were to ignore the assassins of the Brotherhood – and Hamas and the Saudis and Hezbollah and the Iranians – Israel would render itself indefensible if it shrunk down to a coastal mini-state on the Mediterranean with Arabs sitting in her highlands and perched on her mountaintops. What if a heroic, peace-loving Abbas signed the two-state pact and were overthrown, hostile forces would control the new “Palestinian” areas from which rockets could so easily rain down on practically all of Israel — and put Jerusalemites within rifle range from across the street? It has gone generally underreported that the two-state solution also requires Israel to abandon any claim to the Jordan Valley. This means that the “West Bank” would extend all the way to the Jordan border, and this means there would be an Arab continuum all the way from Baghdad to the gates of Tel Aviv. Iraqi, Jordanian and Syrian armies could then saunter into East Jerusalem… never leaving Arab land.

Sure, there are risks, say the two-staters, but the payoffs to success are potentially enormous. The Israeli-Palestinian problem lies at the heart of the “clash of civilizations,” they say, and solving it would do much to end world conflict and suffering.

Does anyone who has been paying attention believe that giving the Palestinians a state will do anything to help or save the Christians in Egypt, Iraq, Syria, or in Nigeria, Sudan and Indonesia, all of whom are caught up in the Islamist surge? Will a Palestinian state stop Egyptians from raping their own women in Tahrir Square? Will it stop Iran from hanging gays in Teheran? Will it put an end to female genital mutilation, or the stoning and honor killing of women in the Muslim realm, including in Muslim enclaves in Europe and America?

Islamism, according to scholars like Bernard Lewis, is an intellectual revanchist movement that seeks to regain the Islamic civilization’s past glories. Islamism blames the pathetic collapse of the Muslim power after World War I on the abandonment of ancient religious fervor, belief and practice. The creation of a Jewish state is only one of the painful humiliations of Islam.

A “two-state solution” would not placate Muslims. It would not likely be seen by the region’s rising Islamists as a sign from Allah that they had misunderstood Him all this time. On the contrary: The surrender of vast and strategic territory and the evacuation of Jews from “holy Arab land” would only inflame them further. “We were right,” they would crow. “We’re half way there… Don’t give up, stay the path. Finish the job.” And by that, Islamists refer not only to the subjugation of the little Jewish state. Look at Europe.

Westerners used to have genuine wisdom about human affairs. But the left’s “long march” through our educational and cultural institutions has left us with the brain-rot of political correctness. Machiavelli’s sad but solid truth about the political realm – “it’s better to be feared than loved” – was not absorbed by our Prince – and won’t be, by all our little princes and princesses whose enormous tuition payments grant them the opportunity to stew in that rot.

Obama went to Columbia, where instead of realism they teach the principles of “conflict resolution” which, they aver, can be applied to marriage and business disputes as well as international relations – where accords are achieved through reason and compromise alone –virtuously, without force or the threat of force – because, after all, everybody wants the same thing; nobody wants to die or kill. Roger Fisher’s “Getting to Yes: Negotiating Agreement without Giving In” is the canonical text, perfect for those who insist the world be run on sweetness and light.

But not to worry, Bibi: Obama says he’s got your back. Just don’t be surprised if, Heaven forbid, the rockets rain down and Egyptian and Iraqi armies march, and Teheran’s nuke sits at the ready, don’t be surprised if you hear a faint voice from across the Atlantic: “I’m not going to be scrambling jets. We’ve got other business to do.” Just ask Edward Snowden – or our former Benghazi Ambassador, Chris Stevens.

What explains the West's shameful indifference?

This article first appeared in the Boston Jewish Advocate.

Why is the West so shamefully silent in the face of the onslaught against Christian peoples and communities throughout the Islamic realm?

If the reasons for this are not understood – and if the silence continues – we are almost sure to witness bloody religious/ethnic “cleansings,” if not actual genocides.

The Syrian Christians in Damascus, whose church has just been bombed by anti-Bashar al-Assad rebels, know their community will be wiped out if Assad is toppled. The Christian Copts in Egypt can see what the Salafists have in store for them as the Muslim Brotherhood assumes more and more control. The Copts’ daughters are already being raped, their priests beaten, their churches set aflame. From Nigeria to Malaysia, from Pakistan to Iraq, from Uzbekistan to Tanzania, Christians are arrested, harassed and threatened. Murder is in the air.

Some in the West see what is coming. The Middle East Forum recently launched a monthly update on Christian persecution in Islamic lands. Last year, Christian Solidarity International (CSI) issued a “genocide warning” concerning the endangered non-Muslim minorities (mostly Christians) in North Africa and the broader Islamic Middle East. John Eibner, President of CSI’s USA branch, asked President Barack Obama to speak out on behalf of the endangered Christians.

Obama has not spoken out. But neither have the “human rights” community and other “caring and compassionate” people who endlessly talk about social justice. And sadly, neither have Christian pastors and priests. Why are both the left and the Christians abandoning these people to their fate? I can see 10 reasons.

The left’s silence

1. Crime by non-Westerners distracts from the left’s message.

For many Western progressives, guilt over past Western crimes of colonialism and slavery narrows their focus to horrors committed by Westerners. This enables them to cast themselves as “the good whites” and be exonerated of Western sin. Apartheid committed by South African whites moved them greatly; to protest Arab/Muslim attacks today on Christians would distract from their message and blunt their purpose.

2. Christians cannot be seen as victims.

Progressives perseverate on the notion that Christian missionaries were an arm of Western colonialists, and tricked Asian and African natives with religious mumbo jumbo. Also uppermost in their minds: Christians allowed – and Christian teachings abetted – Hitler’s genocide of Europe’s Jews. The progressives’ history, however, omits centuries of Islamic conquest (by the sword, not the work of missionaries), slaughter, and enslavement of pagans and subjugation of Jewish and Christian communities – which, by the way, preceded Islam in Egypt and of course Israel. Few progressives ever understood that “the tragedy of Sudan” was a murderous anti-Christian (and anti-tribalist) jihad.

3. Pointing to crimes by one’s adversaries hinders “peace.”

Apart from their incomplete and biased view of history, progressives have a PC/therapeutic view of peacemaking: Discussion of Islamist human-rights crimes is barred as “unhelpful” at best and “racist” at worst. To make peace, their theory goes, we must appease and not offend “the other,” and we must think of our adversaries as no different from ourselves. One should not describe cultures that wish only to dominate, encourage men to rape, and force others to reject their own religious faiths. In other words, progressives would object to reporting on what is happening to the Christians in the Muslim world.

4. Many progressives see themselves in a culture war with Christians.

Many progressives may not wish to help persecuted Christians in the Middle East and in Asia because they are at war with Western Christians here over such things as gay marriage, women’s clergy inequality, and abortion. Why help your “enemies?”

Christians’ silence

5. Ignorance, which is sometimes willful.

For the sake of peaceful relations, the media (see “progressives” above) fails to fully inform Christians about Christian suffering at the hands of Muslim radicals. Christian pastors, some of whom have been told by their Muslim “dialogue partners” that any such talk threatens to harm interfaith harmony here, opt for a similar silence. The Diocese of Worcester recently cancelled a talk on Christian persecution by renowned scholar Robert Spencer of JihadWatch.org for precisely that reason.

6. Fear of doing further harm.

The Christian communities in the Islamic realm are effectively hostages. Popes and preachers have known for centuries that Western agitation for Christian rights under – and protection from – their Muslim overlords pose threats to the very lives of the people they wish to help.

7. Christians are not a “people.”

Christians here don’t identify with other practitioners of their faith as “family” – in the way, for example, that Jews do. Recently, Christian students at Gordon College, a Christian school in Wenham, Massachusetts, explained to me that unlike the Jews who mobilized throughout all their communities when one Jew – Gilad Shallit – was kidnapped, Christians are not “a family like the Jews who all come from Abraham and who carry his blood.” (I suggested that the global jihad might cure them of this viewpoint – that their fate was tied now to all Christians.)

8. Few available victims as spokespeople.

When the American Anti-Slavery Group organized mass American support for freeing the slaves of Sudan, our effort was helped immeasurably by escaped slaves who told their personal stories eloquently in English at American churches, synagogues and on campuses. Without such powerful voices here, awakening and mobilizing the Christians – and all Americans – will be much more difficult.

9. Christians cut off from their history.

In the American psyche, as Henry Ford suggested, “history is bunk.” Among American Christians there is not much interest in keeping foreign, ancient Christian communities alive, even the cradles of Christian civilization. In Bethlehem, Christians are disappearing at an alarming rate due to Arab/Islamist pressure, with no audible protest in the West.

10. Christian Zionists are otherwise occupied.

Christian Zionists know more than most about Christian suffering under the Islamists. But, strange as it may seem to us Jews, they are motivated overwhelmingly by the duty they feel toward the Jewish people. They have not been convinced that mobilizing here for their own Christian brethren in the Middle East would do more for Israel (I believe it just might) than continuing to “just” be the amazing Zionists they are.

Eibner put it this way in his letter to President Obama: “At the Holocaust Museum, Mr. President, you repeated a truth of which American policymakers must never lose sight: “Preventing mass atrocities and genocide is a core national security interest and a core moral responsibility of the United States of America.”

Americans of all political stripes and religious denominations need to remind ourselves of whom we are – and ask ourselves whom we would be if we leave the Christians to what so clearly seems a terrible, terrible fate.

Where is Arab Apartheid Week on American campuses?

Israel Apartheid Week has come and gone this year on many American campuses. It was, of course, a hoax: However much Arabs in Israel suffer, and whoever is to blame for it, there is no apartheid in Israel.

Meanwhile, however, in Sudan and Mauritania, racist Arab societies enslave blacks. Today. Most of the slaves are African Muslims. Yet there is no Arab Apartheid Week on American campuses. Why not?

One might think American student activists would be upset about Mauritania, the West African country with the largest population of black slaves in the world – estimates range from 100,000 to more than a half-million. In Mauritania, slaves are used for labor, sex and breeding. The wholly owned property of their masters, they are passed down through generations, given as wedding gifts or exchanged for camels, trucks, guns or money.

Surely, life is not so good in a Palestinian refugee camp – no matter who is to blame, but it’s undeniably a whole lot worse for Mauritanian slaves. According to a Human Rights Watch/Africa report, routine punishments for slaves in Mauritania – for the slightest fault – include beatings, denial of food and prolonged exposure to the sun, with hands and feet tied together. More serious infringement of the master’s rule (in American slave-owning parlance, “getting uppity”) can lead to prolonged tortures known as “the camel treatment,” in which the slave’s body is slowly torn apart; the “insect treatment,” in which tiny desert insects are inserted and sealed into the ear canal until the slave is driven mad; and “burning coals,” a torture not fit to describe in a family newspaper. Perhaps the reason for silence on campuses about these things is that the story of black slaves and their Arab masters remains unknown there. It would, of course, be a sensitive topic: slavery has existed in Mauritania since the 12th century, when Arab tribes from the Arabian Peninsula invaded and conquered North Africa. Raiders then stormed African villages to the south, pillaging, enslaving and converting the indigenous peoples to Islam. While the Koran forbids the enslavement of fellow Muslims, just as in the West, in North Africa racism trumped religious doctrine. The descendants of those Arab invaders are today’s slave owners. The descendants of those captured as slaves in jihad raids are in human bondage today. These are, then, black Muslim slaves – who, for racist reasons, aren’t allowed to touch the Koran with their black hands, who can’t marry without their owners’ permission, and whose children belong to the master.

Not all blacks in Mauritania are slaves. But all are oppressed by Arab colonialism. (You might even call the Arabs in North Africa “settlers,” if you wanted to be testy.) Arab Berbers (or “White Africans”) constitute less than a third of Mauritania’s population of 3.5 million people, but they control the government and military, as well as the education and the court systems.

I interviewed Saidou Wane, a Mauritanian immigrant who lives in Cincinnati and speaks regularly on behalf of the Movement for Justice and Equality in Mauritania (MJEM). Saidou reports that the Mauritanian regime is constantly working to cleanse the country of any non-Arab influence. The state recognizes only Arabic as an official language, refuses to acknowledge the local African languages (Wolof, Fulani, Soninke), and allows only French and Arabic in school curricula. In other cases, this would easily be termed “cultural cleansing.”

Indeed, it might be even worse than apartheid: The government has expropriated land owned by black Africans through expulsion and dispossession. An ethnic cleansing campaign that began in 1989 led to the expulsion of an estimated 100,000 blacks from Mauritania. The government and army were purged of black officers. Amnesty International reported that thousands of blacks were killed, and many tortured, while hundreds of African villages in the south were demolished.

Mauritania holds the distinction of being the last nation on earth to legally abolish slavery, which it did, with no mechanisms of enforcement, in 1981. Slavery was not criminalized until 2007, but to date there has been only one single conviction.

Why hasn’t any of this been addressed by Western governments? For one, the Mauritanian regime, once a supporter of Saddam Hussein, has ingratiated itself with the United States and Europe through promises to help fight al-Qaida. And then in December 2012, in a move that defined it as the morally bankrupt institution it is, the United Nations (U.N.) Human Rights Council elected Mauritania as its vice president and rapporteur.

What about the silence of Western progressives? I call it the “human-rights complex:” The cases that the rights groups focus upon are not determined by the nature, extent or degree of suffering by the victims, but rather by the identity of those thought to be the oppressors. Think about it: Most human-rights advocates in the West are decent, middle-class whites who are defensive about past Western sins – slavery, colonialism, racism. Their activism is a matter of personal identity. They act to be exonerated, to be seen as innocents, guiltless, not like the “bad white” exploiters. They march under the banner of “Not in My Name.”

Anti-Israel propagandists have inverted reality in the minds of many of these people: Jews have been transformed from last century’s stateless, Asiatic, non-Europeans, to whites with power who behave badly toward innocent, impoverished, indigenous, darker-skinned people. This is precisely the taint that many “rights activists” wish to avoid: “people who look like us, behaving badly.” (That’s why whiteimposed apartheid in South Africa was treated as a bigger crime than Arab slaving and genocidal massacres of blacks in North Africa.)

Israel Apartheid Week – and the absence of Arab Apartheid Week – have nothing to do with external realities, or actual suffering but are the psychodramatic results of miseducated, manipulated, guilt-ridden, American middle-class youth. The biggest victims here, of course, are those oppressed by non-Westerners (women, gays, Christians, blacks, and other minorities in the Muslim realm) who cannot break through the fog of political correctness to reach the good but blinded souls of American students on campus.

In 2012, CNN reporters interviewed Moulkheir Yarba, who escaped her master after he raped her, fathered her child and then left the baby to die in the Sahara Desert – to teach her to “work faster.”

If Moulkheir could understand how America, a nation of abolitionists, has so enchained itself with political correctness, and become so blinded to her plight, she would weep. As should we.

Watch the American Anti-Slavery Group’s video of a remarkable Passover celebration. Joseph Polak, a prominent rabbi from Boston, shared the Jewish tradition of remembering slavery with 175 just emancipated slaves in southern Sudan:

This article originally appeared in the Boston Jewish Advocate.

Spring’s coming. Get ready for Israeli Apartheid Week on campuses across the nation. Here in Boston last week, Harvard got off to an early start: the college’s Palestine Solidarity Committee placed mock eviction notices on students’ doors, warning students that their rooms were “scheduled for demolition in the next three days.” This was then likened to “the unlawful displacement of Palestinians.”

That little psychodrama is just the prelim to a full program which will include anti-Israel films, the construction of an “apartheid wall” in the Science Center Plaza, and a talk by Hizbollah supporter, MIT Professor Noam Chomsky — who just may be the American Jew most proud to be ashamed that he’s a Jew.

At Northeastern University, where Professors Denis Sullivan and Shahid Alam have proudly been working for decades to foment hatred of Israel (see www.shameonneu.com) the schedule is even more fulsome: From March 11-15, students will be shown two anti-Israel propaganda films, one even narrated by Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple. There will be a mock checkpoint constructed on the Centennial Commons, and all week long there will be a lighted sign flashing: “End Israeli Apartheid.”

NEU President Aoun, who has finally come under pressure to do something about his radical, anti-Israel/anti-Semitic professors, might find it useful now to emulate Jason Kenney, the Canadian Minister of Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism, who condemned Israeli Apartheid Week as simple anti-Semitism. Aoun, who is Christian Lebanese, surely knows that Middle East Christians are the ones suffering from something pretty close to apartheid – in every one of the lovely Arab-dominated states they nervously inhabit. Condemning the lie about Israel while outing the real oppressors would be a double mitzvah. True, he’d have a tenured tantrum on his hands. Meanwhile, the silence of the Jewish Studies Department there continues to astonish.

At Boston University, there will be a sham conference on “The Right of Return.” Several scholars who oppose the idea that Palestinians in vast numbers should be allowed to flood into Israel, thereby extinguishing the Jewish state, have submitted proposals to give papers. As of this writing the “conference” conveners have not responded to any of them, so any pretense that their panel is “academic” is a farce. Just more political theatre.

So what do we do about all this? The ADL has said it is “outraged” by the Harvard eviction notices. Nice, but then what?

I attended a workshop last week at the mammoth, yearly AIPAC Policy Conference which addressed the surge of anti-Israelism on the campuses. The two speakers representing Jewish organizations that work on campuses came to promote what has become the Jewish Establishment’s only acceptable strategy; it’s called “retail engagement.” Responding to anti-Israel activity publicly with counter arguments, they say, has been shown to be ineffective. “Debate,” they argued, “has no audience.” A better approach is to get to know other students personally, especially student leaders, to build relationships with them, to “make friends, not arguments.”

Much of this makes sense. Cold facts and logic don’t win over most people. So much of politics is personal. Being popular and playing on emotion is often key. This sort of engagement is clearly necessary — but why would anyone think it’s sufficient to win? Isn’t the other side much larger? Can’t they reach out to more leaders? To be truthful — aren’t they often more charming?

And don’t they have a big advantage? In our leftist-dominated culture which is obsessed with victimhood, the other side continually offers students what seems the high moral road — a victimhood campaign. In a low-information age, a picture of an Israeli tank next to a Palestinian child is enough to set people’s judgment against us, sometimes for good.

Our problem is that they lie. Another reason that “retail engagement” alone won’t win is that there is something more emotionally powerful than personal friendships at stake: In our world, people see themselves as good and moral people if they are for the underdog, and against oppression. If pro-Israel students, no matter how engaging, are seen to be supporting a cause that people fear taints them morally, friendship with charming Zionists will not often prevail.

No, friendship is not the magic bullet. To win, Jewish students will have to do harder things: They have to re-capture the emotional argument that counts most: Not that we are individually nice people, but that Israel is a decent nation that is being lied about. Jews are being victimized. That is the central truth of the matter, but exists now as the elephant in the PR room. Winning people to this central truth– that they are lying about us – means that pro-Israel students are going to have to do something the Jewish Establishment tells them not to do: they are going to have to call the campaign of lies what it is. They are going to have to talk to their friends about the people who are doing the defaming. They are going to have to “go negative.” What we face is more than a social popularity contest: it’s a political/ideological war; surely we know by now that it will take more than being charming if we mean to win.

It is time Jewish students stopped crowing that gays can march in Tel Aviv and started calling the propaganda crusade against us what it is: Bull! Lies! A hoax! The most inconvenient truth for our adversaries is that the horrors the Arab/Islamic world has falsely charged against Israel, are things they have actually done themselves — and are still doing…. While the “human rights” world keeps relatively mum. Land theft? The Arab world started out in Arabia and conquered the rest by jihad. Cruelty? Take a look at how women are treated, at how Sunnis treat Shias and vice versa. Is it now 70 or 80,000 dead in Syria? How many black slaves serve Arab masters across Arab north Africa?

Apartheid? Jewish students should say: “glad you brought that up. Because if you are truly interested in institutionalized subjugation in the Middle East, then talk to Simon Deng, an African who was enslaved by Arabs in Sudan; or to Mohammed Yahya, an African Muslim from Darfur, whose people are being massacred by Arabs for resisting Arabization; or to Caroline Doss, a Christian women from Cairo, whose people shiver to think what may soon happen to them because of the wonderful Arab spring. (They’re all available.) Apartheid in the M.E. is not about Israel at all. That’s a scam. The real apartheid is in the Arab/Islamic states.

If pro-Israel students can convince their classmates that anti-Israelism is based on lies — inversions, actually — Israel might just win on campus. Sure, it helps if pro-Israel students are likeable but only if they have the courage to state the truth and the wisdom not to listen to their establishment “leaders” might their efforts be decisive.
