The Palestinian blame-game.

Dear President Obama, Secretary of State Kerry and UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon:

Save yourselves lots of time, anguish and jet fuel, by learning a short saying in Arabic that sums up the current crisis in Gaza.

“Darabni wa-baka, sabaqni wa-ishtaka.”

It is a rhyme in Arabic that means:

“He hit me and quickly cried: ‘He attacked me,’ he lied.”

It aptly describes the way Palestinian thugs and leaders—from the PLO’s Yasser Arafat and Mahmoud Abbas to the maniacs of Hamas—attack or try to cheat someone and then rush to complain about being beaten up or victimized.

It is a form of misconduct perfected by Yasser Arafat. It is why other Arabs distrust the Palestinians and see them as hypocritical and ungrateful cry-babies.

ARAFAT’S MOTTO: Hit hard, complain harder:

This pattern began in 1967 when PLO chief Arafat slipped into Jordan, disguised in women’s clothing, asking refuge from King Hussein. Within two years, Arafat and his terrorist colleagues had taken over the country, directing traffic in Amman and blowing up hijacked planes in Jordan’s airports.

At the last minute, King Hussein rallied his army and saved his country. Arafat and his thugs cried and wailed how the King massacred Palestinians in the “Black September” of 1970. Then, they ran to Lebanon where they took over another country, brutalizing all who stood in their way: Christians, Druze, Shiite and Sunni moderates.

Until Arafat and the PLO came to Lebanon, it was called “The Switzerland of the Middle East”—an imperfect democracy that usually worked.

Arafat fixed that.

The PLO destroyed Lebanon’s delicate balance and frail democracy, sparking a Muslim-Christian civil war.

For 12 years, Arafat and his colleagues ceaselessly attacked Israel from the refuge of Lebanon, using rockets, mortars and cross-border terror raids, killing hundreds, storing their arms in UN schools or neighborhood houses.

Does that sound familiar?

In June 1982, after the PLO broke ceasefires brokered by US officials (including a Palestinian attack on an Israeli ambassador), Israel evicted Arafat from Lebanon.

Arafat cried and lied about “Israel’s inhumanity.” Western media echoed his words. The Lebanese Red Cross (Crescent) run by Yasser Arafat’s brother, Fathi, said Israel had massacred thousands, and had made 600,000 homeless in southern Lebanon (a number larger than the entire population of that region).

Forced out of Jordan and then Lebanon, the PLO went to Tunisia, sometimes pretending that it had changed its wicked ways. Naïve “peace activists” in the US and Israel coached Arafat to say the word “peace” in English and French. It worked.

Arafat managed to fool Israel, and, in 1993, it signed “The Oslo Accords,” which Arafat immediately violated, smuggling arms into Gaza and the West Bank.

Within months, Arafat’s Fatah group and Hamas were both competing who could hurt Israel more with shootings and suicide attacks.

In 1996 Arafat launched his own “Tunnel War” against Israel, claiming an Israeli archeological dig in Jerusalem was a conspiracy to collapse the Al-Aqsa Mosque. About 20 Israelis and 50 Palestinians died in Arafat’s Tunnel War.

In 2000, Ehud Barak offered Arafat almost all the West Bank and all of Gaza. Arafat refused, launching another war he called The Al-Aqsa Intifada. He claimed the Arabs were attacked by Ariel Sharon who allegedly “desecrated” the Al-Aqsa Mosque with his shoes. Again Arafat lied, and again hundreds died.

In 2005, Israel removed its army and all 10,000 of its own citizens from Gaza—hoping the move would be seen as another peace gesture. One hundred per cent of Gaza was put in the hands of Mahmoud Abbas, Arafat’s successor as PLO chief. But Gazans saw Abbas as weak, and the power of the rival Hamas movement grew.

Abbas tried to hold Gaza by promising Hamas (Fatah Day Speech—January 1, 2005) that they could all join their rifles together in attacking al-Ikhitilal al-Isra’ili–“The Israeli Occupation”—a code-word for Israel itself.

US Secretary of State Condi Rice ignored Israeli pleas that Hamas—which swore Israel’s destruction—not be allowed to run in the 2006 Palestinian elections. Rice now admits her mistake, but it is too late.

Hamas fastened an iron grip on Gaza. Its thugs literally threw Abbas supporters out of the windows of government buildings in Gaza. Hamas began building and smuggling rockets, as well as digging tunnels into Israel for a future war. Hamas forced children, whose bodies are small and flexible, to dig at the point of gun.

More than 160 children died digging for Hamas, according to a Palestinian journal. CNN and The New York Times did not report it. UN Human Rights Commission did NOT object. Mahmoud Abbas did NOT file complaints to the International Court of Justice, where he loves to lodge complaints against “Israeli inhumanity.”

Abbas and Turkish Islamist dictator Recep Erdogan complained that Israel—which supplied cheap or free electricity and water to Gaza—was trying to “starve” Gaza, by trying to supervise a quarantine of illicit items for the Hamas war machine.

But you do not need to remember all of this history.

Just remember the Arabic saying: “Darabni wa-baka, sabaqni wa-ishtaka” and it means: “He hit me and cried: ‘He attacked me,’ he lied.”

And why Jews are leaving.

You may not have noticed, but, over the weekend, Europe died.

“The First World” basically succumbed to a long illness. It gave up the ghost as an economic force, as a culture and even as a continental political entity.

Here are two very different signs:

“Anti-Europe” politicians swept to power in the European Union (EU) parliament on a crest anger at leftist EU bureaucrats who built up layers of regulation of daily life that are unpopular with millions of people;

A well-trained terror squad murdered four people in Brussels, the seat of the EU—only the latest episode of Jew-hatred in Europe’s greatest cities. from London, Paris, Toulouse, Marseilles, Copenhagen

“Oh don’t worry about the Fascists and Right-wingers who won one small election, and don’t get alarmist about one incident of extremism,” say the feel-good crowd, but they are fooling themselves and trying to fool others.

The anti-EU vote in the European Parliament elections is not just a passing phase, and it is not just an eruption of “fascist,” “nativist” or “right-wing” emotions.

There is significant anti-EU feeling among responsible and intelligent people in many countries in Europe—people who have seen years of fat-cat EU politicians living in a fantasy world of statist theories that leave economic and social chaos.

Greece—a country that endlessly rewards incompetence and then gets bailed out—is a prime example. Some Greeks get 14 monthly salaries in 12 months.

Official unemployment continues to rise in most European countries—England, France and even Germany—but the real joblessness has climbed over 20-percent in countries like Spain. Meanwhile, people in England, France and Germany no longer want to pay pensions for slack workers in Greece and Spain.

Frail European economies and the falling value of the Euro currency are not as disturbing as the collapsing values on the streets of London, Paris, Marseilles, Toulouse, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Brussels.

Europe’s core cities have become quite uncomfortable areas if you are not a Muslim immigrant. They are dangerous “no-go-zones” if you are visibly Jewish.

Slick salesmen coined the phrase “buy now, pay later,” and Europe is now paying.

Europe bought cheap manpower, importing young men from Pakistan, Morocco, Turkey to make up for the loss of European men in two bloody world wars. It was acceptable as a short-term policy, but Europe got addicted to cheap Muslim labor.

Europe made this worse with its very low birth rates, then sped up the import of Muslims laborers, without educating them about European values and history. These men kept to the edge of society, becoming bitter: good recruits for crime and terror.

Then the EU tried to buy the affections of the young immigrants and their second-generation families with big welfare programs. But you cannot buy love or loyalty.

Many of the Muslims felt un-British, un-French, un-Swedish. They could speak the language, but they had no appreciation of living in a mixed modern society.

Instead, many Muslim immigrants reverted to the authoritarianism of their home cultures and their tribal values. Extremist Muslim preachers–dispatched years ago to the West by Saudi money—grabbed the chance to turn the disaffected Muslim workers into a crop of jihadis.

The first target of the jihadis today, like the first target of fascists and Nazis in the 1930′s, is the Jews. Jews are an easy target and popular target.

But Jews are also a weather vein and a lightning rod. They tell us which way the wind is blowing, and they tell us a storm is coming. Jews are the default choice for hatred whether it is Hitler, Stalin or Osama Bin-Laden.

And the Jews have noticed. Jews are leaving Europe, and Europe will regret it. Nations that welcome Jews get richer in many ways. (Check out the Nobel Prize list.) Countries that evict or kill their Jews—whether the Spain of the Inquisition or the modern Arab states—get poorer.

The synagogues in Europe are mostly empty. Many of the Jewish sites in Europe are really memorials or museums, but it is Europe that will itself be just a memory.

Yes, it will take a few years, but it really happened this week.

Why Israel's existence is tied in with being a Jewish state.

What does “Being Jewish” have to do with Arab-Israeli peace? Why does Israel insist Palestinians accept Israel as a Jewish state? What causes Palestinians and other Arabs to be threatened by the “Jewish” character of Israel?

Answer One: Israel is designed to be “Jewish” in the sense that it is meant to be a spiritual home and a physical refuge for Jews—the world’s most persecuted minority.

If you pick a century—or even a decade—in history, you can find how the powers of the day set out to persecute, rob, enslave and kill the Jews of their time: Egyptian pharaohs, Babylonian kings, Roman emperors, European knights, Spanish Inquisitors.

In the last century alone, Nazis and their allies murdered 6,000,000 Jews—a third of the world’s population. In ecological terms, Jews are an endangered species. Israel is a nature preserve for Earth’s most persecuted and perhaps most productive minority.

Israel is a home where Jews can be safe to practice their religion (or not), to identify as Jews or Israelis (or not) without fear of persecution by German Nazis, Russian Cossacks, British Crusaders, French fascists, Islamic maniacs, etc.

Answer Two: Israel must insist on having its “Jewishness” recognized because Arab and Islamic individuals, states and organizations say Jews can only exist as a second-class status within a sovereign Arab or Islamic community. In Islamic terms, this is called being a dhimmi—having protected but limited second-class religious rights.

Making Muslims accept Israel as Jewish really means making them accept that Jews have political and cultural rights like Arabs and Muslims. Arabs have 22 sovereign states whose area is bigger than Europe. The Muslims have 50 or 60 states. No one questions that. So, the Jews can have one state the size of New Jersey.

The so-called “Arab World” and the “Islamic Community” say they do not have an ideological problem with Jews as a religion, but they are being misleading in asserting this. The truth is that they do not have a problem with Jews as long as the Jews “stay in their place.”

Many Arabs and Muslims have a huge problem with the Jewish nationalism known as Zionism. Recognizing Israel as Jewish means Jews are not just a religion but are also a nation, have national rights, and cannot be evicted from their homeland.

When Jew-haters (or genteel anti-Semites from Britain or Norway) say they do not hate Jews but only hate Israel or Zionism, they are lying. It is like saying they are not against Jews but only against Jews having arms, legs, eyes—the ability to see for themselves, build for themselves and protect themselves.

Zionism means a Jewish state, a Jewish refuge, a predominantly Jewish home. This is not just a practical option but a moral imperative. Worldwide, Jews are safer when there is a Jewish state, because it helps them.

In addition, non-Jews are also safer because a Jewish state does not persecute Muslims, Christians, Druze, Bahai, Circassians and others who live in that Jewish state, and that same “Jewish state” also helps to protect non-Jewish minorities in nearby states, and it often gives them refuge from persecution.

The 22 Arab states and 50-odd Islamic states cannot make that claim.

Answer Three: Many Arabs, many Muslims and particularly the Palestinians are threatened by a “Jewish” Israel because Israel is real and successful—a modern state with traditional values. The Jewish state’s very success casts a harsh light on the failures of the “Arab” and “Islamic” states and their values.

This is particularly true of the Palestinians who cannot even agree on who will lead them—the PLO in the West Bank or Hamas or Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Palestinians feel threatened by Israel because of their own internal weakness and incoherence.

This is not just political frailty but a weakness of spirit. Palestinians sense something artificial about their own identity. The concept “Palestinian” is relatively new in Arab thinking. It is a foreign word in Arabic. “Palestine” is never mentioned in the Quran, Islam’s holy book. “Israel” and “the Jews” are mentioned scores of times.

This internal Palestinian lack of identity may be the psychological reason for the PLO-Hamas long-time insistence that Israel cease to exist. Perhaps this explains why both PLO and Hamas refuse to recognize the Jewish character of Israel.

Even so-called Arab “moderates” (who are not really moderate) like PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas violate treaties with Israel. They try to boycott, isolate and hurt Israel. Indeed, Abbas and other “moderates” recoil in disgust at the suggestion of accepting a “Jewish” Israel.

On the other hand, staunch Israeli patriots or religious Jews do not fear Arab nationalism, Muslim religion or Palestinian sentiment. Most Israelis feel strong enough about themselves to accept Palestinian Arab nationalism, even as most Arabs still reject the very idea of Zionism or a Jewish state.

The real question remains: Are Arabs, Muslims and especially the Palestinians able to make peace by accepting the Jewish state as a real partner and neighbor?

*
Don’t miss the recent Glazov Gang episode with Mudar Zahran, a leader of Palestinians in Jordan who has been living in exile in the UK since 2010.

Who should Western democrats support in the “new” Middle East?:

a. Islamists elected to power who claim to be democrats (best example: the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt or the ayatollahs in Iran).

b. Bloody-handed Arab nationalists who pretend to be moderate (best example: Bashar Assad in Syria).

c. Would-be nationalist leaders who cannot be elected dog catcher and who pretend to be moderate while actually being extremist (best example: PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas who dresses nice but acts not nice).

d. Militarists who claim to be liberals but have suspended elected government (best example: the Egyptian generals who have ousted the Muslim Brotherhood).

If you are the Obama Administration, you answered this one question incorrectly—three different ways:

a. By choosing the Muslim Brotherhood (and you doubled the ante by not working hard to help foes of the ayatollahs).

b. By preferring Bashar Assad as a worthy ruler to whom you sent an ambassador against the express wishes of Congress, then dilly-dallied even as Assad slaughtered thousands, and further procrastinated as the rebel forces came to be dominated by Al-Qaeda.

c. By encouraging Palestinian intransigence and rewarding PLO chief Abbas, who has neither legal legitimacy nor any kind of popularity to represent Arabs in any area between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean.

Choice “d”—aiding Egypt’s generals is not a great choice, but Westerners need to distinguish between autocrats moving slowly for change and full-fledged despots who will never change. Some Mideast dictators exploit “democracy” in order to rub out democratic opponents.

Islamist leaders who gain power in Egypt, Turkey and Iran, will not give up power graciously or accept real elections where there is a real chance they will lose.

That is what Recep Erdogan has done in Turkey, muzzling the press and castrating the military. More journalists in Turkey have been jailed than anywhere else in the world, and the army commander was jailed for treason, though the Turkish army was meant also to be the guardian of a secular republicanism so that extreme clerics do not vanquish liberty.

Sadly, Turkey’s army was cleverly outmaneuvered by Erdogan, and Egypt’s army wanted to prevent that Turkish scenario in Egypt, where the Muslim Brotherhood had moved strongly to impose Islamic law and veiling women.

Turkey’s Erdogan is Barack Obama’s favorite Mideast leader, and he has also frozen Israel out of NATO exercises. Obama and Hillary Clinton did nothing.

Turkey’s Islamist leader helped Hamas terrorists in Gaza, and he has tried to bully and extort Israel. A very good sign from Egypt’s military leaders is that they did NOT let Erdogan visit Gaza, and another good sign was that they are working hard against Hamas and on Al-Qaeda-linked terrorists in Sinai who just fired missiles again at Israel’s port city of Eilat this week.

So maybe the Obama team should be a bit kinder to the Egyptian generals, and let’s not forget that both Anwar Sadat and Hosni Mubarak were Egyptian military men who, while not perfect democrats, worked hard for their people economically and also tried to preserve a fragile peace with Israel.

Just because someone calls himself a democrat or uses a parliamentary trick to gain and hold power does not mean real democracy.

We saw such “phony democracy” when Hitler came to power in 1933 Germany by manipulating the parliamentary process and then burying freedom.

No one claims the Muslim Brotherhood has reached Hitler’s level. However, the Iranians hold phony elections and are already the top terror exporters in the world, including active terror plots in North and South America, even as Iran makes no secret of its global ambitions.

Iran seeks the ultimate weapons of destruction—nuclear bombs atop long-range missiles. For years, Obama temporized on the issue, guided perhaps by Iranian-educated advisor Valerie Jarrett, who led a White House gala for Iranians the day after an Iran-aided terror attack in Bulgaria a year ago. Five Israelis were murdered in that attack, and a White House official said it was “tit for tat” for Israel allegedly attacking Iran’s atomic scientists. The quote appeared in The New York Times, but no one at its editorial board thought to chastise the unnamed senior Obama official for making light of terror and lumping Israel’s attempts to stop a nuclear Iran together with the fanatical terror of Iran and Hizballah.

The term “Islamic democrats” is an oxymoron meant for morons. Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood and Iran’s ayatollahs will not peacefully relinquish power.

“They believe,” as Professor Bernard Lewis once quipped, “in one man, one vote, one time only.”

Abraham Lincoln showed that preserving democracy sometimes demands military power (The Civil War) and even temporarily limiting some liberties (suspending habeas corpus ). We do not need to go that far today, but Arab-Islamic terror and despotism are real dangers to world democracy. Standing piously on the sidelines is not what Abraham Lincoln would have done.

Why the jet-setting secretary won't be bringing peace to the Middle East any time soon.

Forget the headlines: John Kerry has been jetting everywhere and getting nowhere.

Kerry thinks putting the PLO in a room with Israelis will solve the “Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” which he thinks is the most important issue facing the world.

“The core issue of instability in this region and in many other parts of the world is the Palestinian-Israeli conflict,” said Kerry.

Rarely have time, words and jet fuel been so wasted.

First Reason: The PLO does not want peace with Israel, only a piece of Israel, and then another piece of Israel. Palestinians had several chances for a Palestinian state—in 1947, in 1949, in 1967 in 1981, in 2000, in 2006—but always overreached, trying to dismember Israel rather than build Palestine.

Late PLO leader Yasser Arafat said he did not want to be “mayor of the West Bank,” and he did not like fixing sewer lines, but preferred to build concrete bunkers.

Second Reason: The PLO and the Palestinians have nothing to do with problems facing the world. Kerry and Obama think otherwise.

Kerry got off the plane and apparently concluded: a. Syria’s war—the Palestinians; b. Iran’s bomb—the Israelis; c. Egypt’s unrest—the Zionists; d. problems with North Korea — the Israelis; e. trade crisis with China—the Palestinians; and so on.

Before assuming Kerry bumped his head, like Hillary Clinton, we must recall that Obama sent Kerry abroad and also thinks “Palestine” is the center of the universe.

This need not mean that all foreign policy travel is a waste of tax dollars, because travel is often really good for the soul—and for policy.

“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page, ” declared Augustine, centuries ago, and his words are even truer today.

We must see the world, taste other cultures, hear different tongues in order to grow. When we stay in the same place all the time our thoughts get as stiff as our muscles.

Mark Twain, the great writer-traveler, was a boat-hand on the Mississippi River, and he found that “travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness.” Twain warned against “vegetating in one little corner of the earth all one’s lifetime.”

But, as Obama and Kerry have shown, travel is no guarantee of success.

Travel will not help world leaders who do not broaden themselves before going abroad, who do not really study history, culture or languages. Barack Obama is often called bright and worldly, but his policies and statements show he lives in his own Obama-centric world.

Obama thought Russian despot Vladimir Putin was his buddy. He pledged to be even more “flexible” with Putin if he (Obama) got re-elected, and he felt Chinese leaders would cooperate on economic and political matters. Sino-Russian support of terror, tyranny and Edward Snowden show how wrong Obama was.

Obama and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton made colossal errors, claiming a “re-start” in ties with Russia, but they could not even get the word “re-start” right in the big signs they placed in front of cameras at a Russian-US summit.

Westerners who grew close to Communist Russia and China were once called “fellow travelers.” For Obama-Clinton-Kerry, a better term is “frequent fumblers.”

After four years in office and much travel abroad, Obama has a foreign policy built on Obama’s initial gut feeling, not lessons learned from experience or travel. Mark Twain would call this “prejudice,” or “vegetating” because when Obama travels or sends Clinton or Kerry, he keeps his mind closed, effectively staying at home.

That explains why Obama-Clinton ignored warnings that Arab-Islamic terror might strike again on 9-11. The idea did not fit with their world view. They ignored reports from their Arabic-speaking ambassador in Libya, Chris Stevens, who told them repeatedly that Al-Qaeda was targeting Americans in Libya.

That is why Obama-Clinton felt Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood was a better bet for America than President Hosni Mubarak. Obama’s gut, not empirical data, is why Obama says the Guantanamo base in Cuba caused terror rather than the truth: terror caused the need for the Guantanamo base to house terrorists.

That is why Obama believes hostility to the US among Arab extremists or by the regimes of Russia and China is tied mostly to imaginary offenses or insults inflicted by America. That is flat-out wrong. Real travel and real study could have mitigated the error, but the real cure is real inquiry and an open mind.

The dean of US foreign policy in the post-war era was George Kennan, who knew Russian and German well. Kennan felt many US officials did not recognize Soviet and Nazi goals early enough, fooled by myths circulated by those regimes.

Kennan felt US officials needed to take the time and effort to penetrate the cultures of the societies who were the main rivals to America in the world. That is still true.

To make good foreign policy one has to do more than travel by plane. One has to be able to travel with one’s mind.

The president shares a few of his most memorable post-election correspondences.

Dear Michelle,

Well, the election is all over. I want to thank you again for making me the happiest man in the world. I also want to share with you a few thank-you notes I’m sending, as well as a few messages I got after our great victory.

Your permanent running mate, Barack

Dear Governor Romney,

Michelle and I thank you and Ann for being such nice people and for running such a clean campaign. It was a real challenge to beat someone who has no sex scandals (like I used against my Senate race opponents) or any other skeletons in the closet.

David Axelrod and I had to be really inventive, pretending our economic problems were caused by your investment portfolio. Axelrod bet his mustache that you would eventually insult me, but I knew you’d never do that. Yes, Axelrod already bet his mustache a few times in this campaign, but he lost to me. [You see, you're not alone.] That’s the real reason he set up that charity challenge offering to shave it if the goal was reached, because he has to shave that thing off anyway. Rahm Emanuel also lost the same bet, but he wagered on his leotard. I’m giving it to my youngest daughter. Please don’t let anyone know about David and Rahm. In Chicago, we don’t laugh at people making fun of us. Or as they say: never bring a smile to a fight.

Barack Obama

Dear Former Republican Candidates—Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, etc.

Thank you for exhausting Mitt Romney and forcing him to spend his war chest fighting you. That meant he did not have enough money to answer back when I spent $100-million this summer to delegitimize him as a fat cat, tax-dodging, woman-hater.

Sen. Santorum, I want to thank you and those Republican Senate candidates in Missouri and Indiana for introducing marginal social issues which helped us define Romney as a right-wing bogeyman. Your help was priceless. Newt, you always had a way with words, and I used many of them to attack Romney as a rich kid out of touch with working class America.

Your favorite president,

Barack H. Obama

Dear Republican Voters,

Everyone said you were energized, but I want to thank you for proving them wrong. You and your indifference were my margin of victory.

Compared to the 2008 election, I lost more than nine million votes this year from my own backers and independent voters In 2008, about 69 million voted for me and about 59 million for McCain. This year I got about 60 million, while Romney got only 57 million (including more independent voters than McCain got and even a few people who voted for me). This means that two or three million voters who voted for McCain did not vote for Romney. Wow. Thanks so much.

If all the Republicans who voted for McCain had voted for Romney, then Romney would have caught me in the popular vote and maybe even surpassed me, perhaps even taking Florida, Virginia and one or two more close states. That was a close one.

Your president too [ha, ha],

Barack Obama

Dear David (Axelrod),

Thanks for running the campaign in true Chicago fashion. Romney never knew what hit him. Had you advised him, he would have smashed me for Libya and other bumps in the road. Instead he let me slide. Romney reminds me of McCain who never went after me for my ties with Jeremiah Wright, Bill Ayers and some of the others. It’s nice to have nice guys for opponents. Nice guys finish second. Cheers, BO.

Dear David (Petraeus),

Thank you for your service to your country and for being discreet about the little affair that has unfortunately brought an end to your service. Thank you also for taking the job at CIA when we both know that your ideas about fighting terror and my ideas were not always compatible.

Your commander in Chief,

Barack Obama

Dear Reverend Wright,

You and I both know how much I owe you for helping me in my personal and professional life. You brought me Michelle and connections to the community, and you taught me a lot about speaking to crowds.

We both know that I did not want to have to disown my ties to you in 2008, but I had no choice. I am really sorry for all that. It really hurt me and Michelle, and I would like to make it up to you by having you come to the White House to lead a prayer breakfast. You can also bring our mutual friend, Rev. Farrakhan, because while we will distribute “the pork,” we won’t eat any.

We will have your favorite dish: Chickens-Come-Home-to-Roost.

Dear President Obama,

Congratulations on your great win. Hillary and I are happy for you and Michelle, and we are glad that we contributed in our own way to your success.

Hillary is gearing up for a run in 2016, and we know you will help her as a way of saying thank you for my help in the campaign and especially at the convention.

Bill Clinton

Dear President Obama,

We delivered the vote, and we know we can count on you to keep delivering stimulus money and watching out for a closed union shop wherever Americans work.

Your good friends,

The AFL-CIO, teachers unions and SEIU (Service Employees International Union

Dear President Obama

I congratulate you on your great victory, and as your great leader Abraham Lincoln once said, one should be magnanimous in victory. Dimitri Medvedev and I are looking forward to your being especially flexible in pulling back missiles, bases and other aggressive signs of America’s imperialistic past. This is the “flexibility” of which you spoke near that open microphone, and when we re-occupy Georgia and Ukraine, we would like you to come on a vacation with Michelle to celebrate with us.

From Russia with love,

Vladimir Putin

On Obama characterization, Clint Eastwood has the last laugh.

Clint Eastwood’s image of the empty chair in the White House hit home even with the literately conscious magazine The New Yorker whose cover featured Barack Obama’s “empty chair” as the metaphor for the presidential debate.

Movie cowboys are often men of few words and much action. Eastwood knows. Few people are better suited to sum up the essential emptiness and hackneyed hollowness of Barack Obama who cast himself as the sheriff who kills terrorists like Osama Bin Laden when all before him have failed.

The policies of Barack Obama all begin with a lot of words: Recovery Summer, Stimulus, Arab Spring, Re-Start with Russia, Engagement with Iran, ambassador to Syria. But they all end “not with a bang, but with a whimper.”

That is the phrase of T.S. Eliot whose poem “The Hollow Men” seems to have been written for Obama, although it was composed before Obama was born.

We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
Our dried voices, when
We whisper together
Are quiet and meaningless
As wind in dry grass
Or rats’ feet over broken glass
In our dry cellar

Shape without form, shade without colour,
Paralysed force, gesture without motion;

“Gesture without motion” is President Obama’s trademark in office.

When we think of President Obama’s years in office, we see the big speech in a stadium or a public square to an adoring crowd in Cairo or Prague. Behind the scenes, our dramatic speaker has undercut our friends, Egypt’s Mubarak, and leaders of the Czech Republic and Poland who wanted to help the US anti-missile network.

That is not part of the picture, that is not part of “The View” or “The Late Show with David Letterman,” but it will be part of the historical chronicle.

We will recall the promise of a balanced budget and cut deficits, and the reality of no official budget and incredible deficits. We will remember the pledge of six percent unemployment within two years, and then the delivery of real unemployment to double-digit levels not even being covered by government figures.

We will remember the invitations to the Muslim Brotherhood in Cairo, support for the Islamist leaders of Turkey, “engaging” Iran and sending an ambassador to Syria that then unleashed one of the greatest slaughters of recent times.

Obama’s idea of policy is to embrace a goal with words, followed by slogans and backed up with clichés, leaving details to others like lawmakers Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid or appointees like Eric Holder, Cass Sunstein, or the powerful but largely unknown Valerie Jarrett.

So it was with the grand health care plan launched in the middle of a recession and financial panic, and so it has been with the grandiloquent ecological ideas which have brought multi-million-dollar boondoggles like Solyndra.

So it was with Obama’s promise to close down Guantanamo Prison and try terrorists in downtown New York City—hollow promises that thankfully could not be fulfilled.

It is the height of hollow hypocrisy for Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, Secretaries Leon Panetta and Hillary Clinton to take credit for killing Bin Laden while their administration hounded the CIA agents and army commandos whose actions saved American lives and led to Bin Laden and others.

“Osama Bin Laden is dead, and General Motors is Alive,” declares the bumper sticker coined by Vice President Biden. But no bumper sticker can hide the truth.

The fight against Arab-Islamic terror is not over, and the economy is in bad shape. We face greater dangers from terror than at any time since 9-11. There have been more attacks and attempted attacks on the US in the last three years than in the previous eight, though no single attack was a 9-11.

As Eliot wrote:

Between the idea
And the reality
Between the motion
And the act
Falls the Shadow

As for the economy, the dangers of American insolvency and world economic melt-down are also greater than they were in 2008.

As Eliot wrote:

Between the conception
And the creation
Between the emotion
And the response
Falls the Shadow

So, you can believe Biden, but I will stick with Clint Eastwood and T.S. Eliot.

The useful idiots of our time.

Lenin joked that capitalists would sell him the rope by which he would hang them, and Muslim terrorists may be making the same joke about Jews whom they target.

Jews are among the biggest defenders of Arab-Islamic terrorists and those who help finance their efforts, help advance their political goals and help hide their real aims.

Jewish lawyers, clergy, politicians, journalists have taken a prominent role trying to stop interrogation or surveillance of alleged terrorists, while working to block probes of radical mosque speakers and Islamic funding programs that may aid groups like Al-Qaeda and Hamas or support their agenda.

To some people, this may seem natural, because Jews often fight for causes, lead political movements—from Communists to Neo-Cons—choosing to help the “underdog” in almost any argument, even when the underdog seems to hate Jews.

But Jews are also usually the first target of terrorists and tyrants, and so, it seems a bit incongruous when Jews—consciously or not—seem to be helping terrorists or those who aid terrorists, for example:

* Over the last eight years, The New York Times, owned by the Sulzberger family, ran many articles exposing sensitive elements of US surveillance programs and bank monitoring plans that thwarted terror plots. The Times also relentlessly attacked, in editorials and features, US interrogation of terrorists as “torture”;

* The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and other legal lobbies—where Jews are leading members—have toiled tirelessly to win for foreign-born terrorists (who are NOT soldiers or local car thieves) not only the status of uniformed prisoners of war but even the constitutional rights of US criminals;

* New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a Jew who leads the biggest Jewish metropolis in America, has supported building a mosque or Islamic center near the site of the World Trade Center destroyed on 9-11 by Muslim terrorists, though most New Yorkers oppose the Islamic project;

* The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) and prominent Reform rabbis denounced five congressmen as Islamophobic and McCarthyist for asking about possible Islamic penetration of and influence on US government agencies, including the armed services, the State Department and the Department of Justice.

This kind of penetration is not a McCarthist mirage, but a real fact of life. The man who trained Osama Bin-Laden’s bodyguards—Maj. Ali Muhammad—also trained special ops units for the Pentagon. And there are many other examples.

ADL and Reform Jewish leaders said that questioning the goals or methods of groups such as ISNA (The Islamic Society of North America) or CAIR (The Council on American Islamic Relations) was “conspiratorial” and “prejudiced.”

“It’s likes someone who says there’s a Jewish conspiracy to take over the world,” asserted Rabbi David Saperstein, a Reform Jewish leader, and he condemned “the Islamophobic effort to discredit and delegitimize the Muslim community.”

Saperstein and ADL referred to five House members: Michelle Bachmann (R-MI), Trent Franks (R-Ariz ), Louis Gohmert (R-Texas), Tom Rooney (R-Fla,.), and Lynn Westmoreland (R-Ga.) who sent letters with questions to the Inspector-Generals of several government agencies.

The five congressmen said they had not accused anyone of crimes but rather raised questions about undue influence from Islamic lobbyists (some of whom were named in US probes), about lax security clearances, and seeming lax government precaution against radical Islamic penetration of the US security community.

ADL said the congressmen should “stop trafficking in anti-Muslim conspiracy theories.” ADL leader Abe Foxman strongly defended the Obama Administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ), which closed major cases against what US government attorneys themselves called Muslim terrorist front organizations.

Neither ADL nor the Reform Jews recalled that Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) were also critical of US policy regarding radical Islam, and their Senate Homeland Security committee issued a 61-page report that said the Fort Hood shooting, in which 13 died, could easily have been prevented.

Why we can't rely on our policy elites to be "the best and the brightest."

It is hard for the average American to answer tough questions about terrorism or Mideast politics. It is natural, then, to rely on “experts” in government, the press and academia to give responses to the following queries:

* Is Islamic extremism a growing force inside the United States?

* What chances are there to develop more peace and stability from the political upheavals that have been called “Arab Spring”?

* How can we work with the Syrian government or against the Syrian government to end the bloodshed in that country?

* Is Iran making atomic bombs? What does that mean? Could we try to stop it?

* Can we employ Islamist Turkey to negotiate with Iran, and are the Turks more useful in fighting terror than Israel?

* Is the Muslim Brotherhood a moderate organization, and does it make sense to help them gain control of Egypt?

* Would solving the Israeli-Palestinian problem help the rest of the Mideast, and should the US press Israel to find a “two-state solution” with the PLO?

These are all good questions, but anyone who tracks the responses and the results over the last two years will see that many of our most highly regarded experts have been calamitously wrong time after time.

President Barack Obama directed his homeland security people and the US military to stop using the terms Islamic extremism and Islamic terrorism, even though there are clear signs such phenomena are real and rising. The New York Police Department alone foiled more than a dozen Islamic terror plots recently, but it was the Associated Press that won a Pulitzer Prize for a series attacking the NYPD for supposedly harassing Muslims.

Like AP and the New York Times, Obama worries more about staining an entire segment of the population—Muslims—than protecting the non-Muslim majority. A 60-page US Senate report shows that the Fort Hood terror attack (where 13 were murdered) could easily have been prevented, had US officials acted on warnings, instead of brushing them aside as politically incorrect.

Islamic terror attacks have risen in the US during Obama’s term, but the Obama team—particularly Attorney General Eric Holder—has moved to stop prosecutions and investigations of Muslim groups that are believed to help finance the Brotherhood. A set of indictments—the second round of the Holy Land Foundation case—that were pending in Texas was set aside.

Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton feel an “Arab Spring” is in the air, bringing democracy to the Mideast. They pulled the rug out from under President Husni Mubarak. Obama-Clinton and many media “experts” were sure Mubarak would be succeeded by modern democrats. Instead, the Muslim Brotherhood took over.

Key Obama aides pretend that the Brotherhood is really moderate. Muhammad Morsi, a Brotherhood leader who is Egypt’s president, says he wants to build a caliphate—an Islamic empire—whose capital is Jerusalem. He just opened Egypt’s border with Gaza, allowing Hamas and other terror groups to move freely in and out of the Sinai Peninsula bordering Israel.

How we helped the Muslim Brotherhood come to power and undermine the US in the Middle East.

President Barack Obama, who invited the Muslim Brotherhood to his Cairo speech in 2009, has now invited Brotherhood leader and Egyptian president Muhammad Morsi for talks in the United States.

But as the Muslim Brotherhood comes to power in Egypt, we should all be worried, because the Brotherhood was the group that fathered Al-Qaeda and the Jihad groups that attacked New York in 1993 and again on 9-11.

But President Obama is not worried. He thinks the Brotherhood coming to power is an opportunity—perhaps to achieve even more of a “dialogue,” for “engagement,” with the Arab-Islamic world.

So far this dialogue of engagement has failed everywhere Obama has tried it—in Egypt, in Iran and in Turkey, but the president with the Islamic middle name thinks he can charm radical leaders to a path of moderation.

Back on the ground in the Middle East, there has been a 104-percent increase in terror attacks across the border into Israel from Gaza and Sinai in the last month. Cross-border infiltration and rocket attacks are a daily affair, usually without fatalities, but that will change when the terrorists “get lucky.”

When that happens, and it will, Israeli leaders will have to abandon the pin-point reprisal policy and escalate to a more thorough house cleaning of the border area. The Islamic terrorists in Sinai and Gaza, supported by 11 Bedouin tribes that make money from smuggling, are heavily armed.

There are more than half a dozen different terror groups—some associated with Al-Qaeda—and they will all want to flex their muscles.

Israeli military planners think it is only a matter of time before the Brotherhood, its sister organization, Hamas, that rules Gaza, and the other terror groups destabilize Israel’s southern border, undermining the Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty and even causing a military conflict.

But in the rarefied air of the White House and Foggy Bottom, the Obama Administration is oblivious.

President Obama, Secretary of State Clinton and anti-terror chief John Brennan do not seem too concerned. They helped bring the Brotherhood to the Egyptian presidency by undermining Egyptian leader Husni Mubarak, much the way Jimmy Carter undermined Iran’s Shah 34 years ago.

Obama and Co. invited participation by the Brotherhood in Egypt’s governance, bringing them to Obama’s Cairo speech of 2009. They should have known: He who invites extremists to the appetizer should not be surprised when they stay for dinner and dessert.

The “Brothers” are not interested in sharing power any more than the Iranian ayatollahs were. Yes, there are differences between Sunni Islamic radicals (Egypt) and Shiite Islamic radicals (Iran), but they also have much in common:

They hate Muslims who are not sufficiently religious and are too “Western” in their daily lives;

They hate America and Israel;

And they hate sharing power with anyone.

There will be no real democracy in a Brotherhood-led Egypt. You can bet on it.

How Obama has badly hurt America’s ability to acquire data on terrorists.

Intelligence is the life blood of the fight against terror. You save it. You guard it. You don’t spill it.

President Barack Obama has done the opposite. In his desire to establish credentials as the killer of Osama bin Laden, in his desire to get re-elected, Obama has badly hurt America’s ability to acquire data on terrorists.

The Obama Administration outed a sensitive Saudi-British penetration of Al-qaeda which revealed ongoing plans to use more “underwear bombers” against the West. The Obama leak was designed to make Obama look good, but it destroyed a highly valuable penetration of Al-Qaeda.

Similarly, Obama’s team outed what appears to be an Israeli-led effort to stop Iran’s nuclear bomb program by using sophisticated computer viruses. Obama and Co. wanted part of the credit, and so the story came out with nice pat on the back for Obama.

This is part of a pattern for this administration. It invited film crews to the White House to film the made-for-TV movie about Obama VS. Osama. Sensitive information about US procedures leaked out.

Intelligence and intelligence sources come in many forms. Police know this. They jealously guard their undercover efforts and their data. With terror it is even more important, because the real purpose of counter-terror operations is preventing the terror act, not winning a conviction in court.

Israeli officials often decide not to try for a conviction against terrorists in open court, always preferring to stop the terror attack before it can materialize, especially in the case of a “ticking bomb”—a terror assault that is already in the pipeline. The cardinal rule is always the same:

ONE NEVER THROWS AWAY COUNTER-TERROR INTELLIGENCE.

This means technological or signal intelligence—such as wiretaps or monitored bank records or radiation or heat traces, and it also means human intelligence such as penetrating a terror organization or getting information from terrorists who are captured.

Since 2002, Western counter-terror intelligence brought us slowly but surely to Osama Bin-Laden, but more importantly, it saved thousands of American and British lives by alerting us to plots for huge terror attacks in London, Miami and Los Angeles, among many others.

The intelligence saved thousands of lives, but President Obama and his team have taken a cavalier and almost arrogant approach to counter-terror intelligence, and they spill it when it is politically convenient.

Obama campaigned against the US base in Guantanamo where we got information to stop a multiple hijack assault on Los Angeles and another plot against London and Heathrow Airport. Thousands of lives were saved.

Instead of praising the CIA interrogators Obama and Attorney General Eric Holder said in early 2009 that they might prosecute them. At around the same time, Obama-Holder also gave away details of interrogations procedures, so terrorists can now know in advance what awaits them.

Thanks to Obama and Holder, Al-Qaeda and other terror groups know just how to prepare for interrogation because Obama and Holder broadcast the interrogation manual.

This is a consistent policy of the Obama Administration that often treats counter-terror warriors and the worst terrorists the same: as mere criminals. It was not a fluke when Holder authorized reading “the Underwear Bomber” his “Miranda Rights,” and it was not a fluke when Holder wanted to give terrorists civilian trials.

The Washington Post reports that the Obama Administration is resurrecting the Clinton Administration’s view that the FBI should lead the Department’s many rules and FBI-CIA jurisdictional battles helped pave the way for 9-11.

Are Obama and Co. heading us in the same direction?

Clinton’s Justice Department and other parts of Clinton’s administration made so many rules about FBI and CIA sharing data, so many rules about “profiling,” so many rules about how and where to acquire intelligence agents (“the Deutch Rules”) that 9-11 gestated and matured on their watch.

An American president does all he can to shield Iran from Israel.

As US officials again ask Iran to stop its atom bomb program, President Barack Obama seems to be working hard to shield Iran and to prevent Israel from striking at Iran’s nuclear weapons potential. US officials are believed to be behind stories about Israel readying basing and refueling options in countries near Iran, like Azerbaijan.

The Azeris quickly denied they allowed Israel to use their land., and this is a sign the Azeris are feeling pressure not to help Israel, even as Obama reportedly used the Islamist and strongly anti-Israel leader of Turkey, Recep Erdogan, to send a message to Iran that the US would be willing to accept “an Iranian civilian nuclear program.”

For Israel—and for Saudis, Jordanians and Egyptians—Iran’s bomb is not a matter that can be indefinitely delayed in a diplomatic ping-pong match.

President Obama has been rotating his top officials on and off the diplomatic playing field to deter an attack on Iran. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta, National Security Advisor Tom Donilon, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey, and many others have been sent to Jerusalem to tell Israel NOT to attack Iran.

“It’s not prudent at this point to decide to attack Iran,” said General Dempsey, in an interview with CNN. Meanwhile, Secretary Panetta openly discussed some of Israel’s options and possible time tables in ways that make them less surprising and effective for possible use against Iran.

At the same time, Obama has been seen using the playbook of his favorite pundit, CNN’s Fareed Zakaria, whose book is often under Obama’s arm, and Zakaria says “Within the context of Iranian politics, Ahmadinejad is the pragmatist.” For more than three years, President Obama has agreed, trying to “engage” such “pragmatists.”

“Pragmatist” has a special meaning for Zakaria/Obama or maybe they have not heard Ahmadinajad brag about how he felt a halo appear around him when he told the UN that everyone should pray for the Mahdi, an Islamic messiah Ahmadinajad believes has to be born out of a fire that will cleanse the world.

Ahmadinajad and Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, want such a mighty Mahdi. Their ideas are so extreme that Ayatollah Khomeini—hardly a moderate—outlawed them when he was alive. He felt the Mahdi cult would cause Iran’s destruction.

Zakaria thinks attacking Iran is dumb because Iran is run by “rational” men like those who led the Soviet Union. Zakaria has said this for a long time, and he has been wrong for a long time.

The Soviets were led by conservative old men who said Communism would beat the West as part of an “inevitable dialectic.” They could afford to wait. They did not run around handing out weapons of mass destruction to terrorists or client states. Iran is different. It helped Syria build a nuclear program and sends missiles to Venezuela.

About 25-percent of the suspected terrorist detainees freed from Guantanamo prison in Cuba are known or are believed to have gone back to active terrorism, says a government report that released recently — a report you probably did not see.

“The Intelligence Community assesses that 81 (13.5 percent) are confirmed and 69 (11.5 percent) are suspected of reengaging in terrorist or insurgent activities after transfer,” said House Defense and Oversight Subcommittee, citing data from the Director of National Intelligence, the CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency.

It is straightforward stuff, dovetailing with Israel’s experience in releasing jailed terrorists, where even higher numbers have returned to active terror.

The reason you probably did not see or hear about the report dealing with terrorists or suspected terrorists captured and released since 9/11 is that the report was treated as a minor news item by most media some of which ignored it entirely, while others called it a “Republican report” or “GOP” study.

“Freed Guantanamo Detainees Turn to Terror, Republicans Say,” wrote Bloomberg news, and ” GOP report questions release of terror suspects from Guantanamo,” averred the Associated Press (AP, of course, has been doing a lot of its own reports about how New York’s police supposedly harass local Muslims).

For their part, House subcommittee Democrats wanted the report to be treated as a partisan effort, because it shows that Guantanamo (Gitmo) prison holds some very bad people, and that some of those bad people were inadvertently released when the media and liberal groups pressed the Bush Administration to close the facility.

The Obama administration and the Democrats in Congress still say that Gitmo should be closed, and evidence that Gitmo is performing an important function is something that has to be discredited or concealed.

The main reason is that the report and the facts do not agree with the narrative and the rationale of the Democrats, and many in the US media are ready to oblige.

Led by Rep. Steve Smith (D-Wash.), the House subcommittee Democrats tried to undercut the report, even though it was produced by the intelligence community (such as Lt. Gen. James Clapper, director of National Intelligence, an Obama appointee).

The Democrats largely succeeded, but some of their statements are quite funny.

“Many of the key policy makers regarding this issue were not interviewed and only a smattering of government documents were reviewed (about 2000 pages),” said the Democrats’ minority report. Since when is 2000 pages just “a smattering” ?

Despite the media/Democrat contention that the intelligence study is a GOP invention, it shows that most Gitmo detainees were released by Republicans—then-President George W. Bush and then-Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld, both of whom led efforts to reduce Gitmo’s prison population which swelled after 9/11.

“ At a minimum, to obtain a comprehensive view of this subject we would like to hear the views,” said the Democrats’ minority report, “of former Secretary of Defense Rumsfeld, former Secretary of Defense Robert Gates, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and senior members of the National Security Council and the Intelligence Community.”

The administration's sloppy review of Israeli security needs and demographic considerations.

In major recent policy statements, at the AIPAC Conference, the White House and the State Department, President Barack Obama declared:

[*] “Precisely because of our friendship [with Israel], it’s important that we tell the truth;”

[*] “And it is precisely because of our commitment to Israel’s long-term security that we have worked to advance peace between Israelis and Palestinians.”

President Obama, however, has not told the whole truth in his review of the record of previous U.S. presidents. He has also been less than precise concerning his own efforts for peace and downright sloppy in his review of Israel security needs and demographic considerations.

Actually, if Israel were to return to the old frontier lines (which date from 1949, not 1967) as President Barack Obama urges, Israel’s strategic situation would be dramatically worsened in many ways.

Mortal Danger: Arab armies or terrorists would be able to cut Israel in half along its narrow waist, because there would be only eight or nine miles (15 km.) from the Arab state Obama envisions and the Mediterranean Sea. This is about the same distance as from Wall Street to Columbia University in New York City. An Arab armored column could knife across Israel’s heartland through the narrow and heavily populated coastal plain at Netanyah. Within minutes, certainly no more than hours, a surprise Arab attack could mortally wound Israel. Even a small and well-executed terror incursion could sever Israel in two very rapidly.

Air Space and Air Alert: Israel’s mountain bases in the West Bank and the Golan Heights, which Obama wants Israel to relinquish, allow Israel early warning time from threats (such as missile launches and air attack) from even as far away as Iran and Iraq. In addition, the heavily industrialized coastal plain gets a few extra minutes warning time from closer threats. Today, a jet fighter can cross from the Jordan River to Tel Aviv, Haifa or Netanya in under three minutes. That is not a lot of time, but it is better than having less than a minute.

Palestinian leaders refuse even to discuss Israel maintaining sovereign air rights over any Palestinian territory or Israel holding bases inside such territory. Indeed, the history of Israeli bases in the Gaza Strip, which were constantly attacked, is proof of how difficult it would be to maintain bases without significant Israeli territory linking them to Israel. This, too, is ruled out by PLO leaders, and no amount of “land swaps” can possibly correct the problem.

Indefensible Borders: The West Bank is essentially the world’s biggest anti-tank trap. Five mountain passes rise steeply from the low ground of the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea (the lowest point on the planet) up to mountains of Judea and Samaria. Israel can easily hold off superior forces from the high ground. That is why Gen. Earle Wheeler and the US Joint Chiefs of Staff told President Lyndon Johnson in July 1967 that, for its defense, Israel needed to hold this high ground. (For a copy of JCSM-373-67, June 29, 1967, see Michael Widlanski (ed.), Can Israel Survive A Palestinian State, Jerusalem, IASPS, 1990, pp. 148-149.)

President Lyndon Johnson’s advisers Eugene Rostow and Arthur Goldberg drew up UN Security Council Resolution 242. They specifically wrote “defensible borders.” This was a reference to the research opinion solicited by President Johnson from his Joint Chiefs of Staff. Johnson’s aides also refused the concept of total withdrawal.

Israeli military men and policy makers as diverse as Labor’s Yigal Allon and Likud’s Ariel Sharon also built their own strategic visions on Israel retaining at least 30-50% of the West Bank for Israeli security needs. Such significant Israeli control is completely rejected by Arab policy makers. It cannot be fixed by “land swaps” because Israel simply does not have enough land to swap.

Obama Rules Out Major Border Changes: Since making his State Department policy speech on the “67 borders,” Obama has tried to explain that he was not demanding a return to previous frontier lines, but several elements show that he is again not telling anything close to the truth. First, Obama himself stipulates that Israel’s total land area should not be increased, but that “Palestine” and Israel should execute mutually equal land swaps. Secondly, Obama insists that “Palestine” should be “contiguous”—i.e. that Gaza and the West Bank must be connected by a land corridor that effectively cuts Israel in half. Thirdly, Obama insists that “Palestine” have borders with Jordan and Egypt, making it likely that terror and arms smuggling will be relatively easy—as is the situation in Gaza today. Most important, Mr. Obama insists on “the full and phased withdrawal of Israeli military forces” from the West Bank. In simple language, this rules out Israeli forward bases on the Jordan River or the Jordan Valley. That is basically a return to the pre-1967 or 1949 situation, whether Obama admits it or not.

When Obama says he is “leaving it up to both sides,” this is also not true, because when Obama makes the stipulations about full Israeli withdrawal and the limits on Israel’s total size, he is making it nearly impossible for any future Palestinian leader to take a Palestinian negotiating stance that is less Palestinian than Barack Obama’s.

Obama did this before with his position on Jewish “settlements,” and PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas admits that Obama essentially ran him “up the tree.”

Defending Jerusalem: Between 1949 and 1967, Jerusalem was a shriveled town, whose re-supply and communications lines were vulnerable to attack. That is one of the reasons that Israel’s Defense Ministry was set up in Tel Aviv. Jerusalem was Israel’s capital in name, but isolated and vulnerable in practice. Jerusalem is located along the continental divide between the Israeli coastal plain and the Judean Desert. Geographically, it is an enclave surrounded by the West Bank, and maintaining Israel control of Jerusalem would be difficult without controlling significant portions of the higher ground of the Judean mountains around Jerusalem. Israeli control of Jerusalem would also be made a nightmare by ceding Arab control to significant neighborhoods or regions around Jerusalem, as Obama envisions.

Other Implications of Cutting Israel Down to Size: This has been a dream of Arab regimes and pro-Arab policy-makers even before the 1967 War. In the 1940′s and early 1950′s, Britain’s Ernest Bevin, UN mediator Folke Bernadotte and many in the US State Department wanted to take Jerusalem and parts of the Negev out of Israeli control for a variety of reasons. Today, “cutting Israel down to size” is the express dream of Amr Moussa, the staunchly anti-Israel secretary-general of the Arab League and the leading candidate to succeed Egyptian leader Husni Mubarak His goal of cutting Israel down to size would also likely encourage irredentist tendencies among Israeli Arabs and demands for autonomy of predominately Arab sections of Israel in the Galilee and Negev. In other words, Obama’s ideas would not lead to peace and stability but to more instability and foment.

Overall Effect on Israel’s Defense Doctrine: Because of the loss of strategic depth and early warning, Israel would need to move to a trip-wire defense posture that would encourage massive pre-emptive and probably unconventional attack on any perceived threats. This, too, is not a formula for stability or tranquility.

How a NY Times columnist directs his own unreality show.

Reading a Tom Friedman column on Bibi and Barack is to take a step into a virtual reality show, where the director, Tom Friedman, says there will be no connection to any real facts or any real history. Rather, the director, Tom Friedman, will superimpose a virtual reality of wishful thinking and pet prejudices that will serve as a new substitute reality.

In the new Tom-Friedman-directed reality, the Arabs are surging towards peace and democracy in a Barack-Obama-driven world. Arab oil prices are stable and low out of gratitude to Sheriff Barack, who drilled Osama bin Laden, and is about to drill for oil off-shore, perhaps in one Gulf (Mexican) or the other (Persian). And, yes, he is also about to “drill” Bibi Netanyahu, the villain who has come to town.

Tom the Director has the tough and decisive sheriff read a few lines to the world’s new outlaw—Bibi Netanyahu: “Yo, Bibi, you better get out of them there West Bank settlements by sunset, or you’re gonna be pushing up daisies, pilgrim.”

According to Tom the Director’s script: Bibi, the black-hatted villain surrenders and leaves or gets shot down at high noon on Pennsylvania Avenue. The Arabs in the audience cheer and everyone rolls in oil and a surging economy.

Yup. You-betcha. That’s Tom’s World—flat and wishful. Barack Obama is John Wayne as the Sheriff. Tom Friedman is director John Ford, and Benjamin Netanyahu is the evil and villainous rancher-rustler-”dirty Injun” who gets “run off the reservation.”

As a virtual reality show this only nets a small audience, because most of us recall where this kind of script has gone before. But Director-Screen Writer Tom Friedman has apparently not learned or perhaps forgotten the plot line from the real world.

In the real world, Sheriff Barack Obama’s attempt in 2009-2010 to impose terms on Israel caused the worst set-back in 20 years of Arab-Israeli negotiations. Obama demanded and got an Israeli settlement freeze that goaded the “moderate” PLO “leadership” of Mahmoud Abbas (also known as Marshal Abu-Mazen in some scripts) to refuse even to talk to Israel about anything. This was quite an achievement for Sheriff Barack and Director Tom. Let’s remember that other sheriffs have also had their own virtual scripts, too. Deputy Sheriff Condoleezza Rice demanded that Israel allow Hamas to take over Gaza in the 2006 “elections,” and this led to a new terror state in Gaza. But Deputy Condi cannot equal Sheriff Barack.

Sheriff Barack also tried to talk sweet to the Islamist government of Turkey, the ayatollahs of Iran and what Deputy Hillary called the “reformers” of Syria. We have all seen the success of that virtual reality script. Sheriff Barack made his first foreign speech in Turkey that was once the hope of a truly modernized Muslim community. Now, it has returned to the dark side of Islamism. Sheriff Barack even sent an ambassador to Syria where they tried to build a nuclear reactor with the help of Iran and North Korea. Iran is continuing its own nuclear weapons program.
