• Administrators at the University of Minnesota are looking into a proposal to ban the use of racial descriptions of suspects in crime alerts. The policy change was proposed in a letter sent to university officials by a number of student and faculty organizations on campus including the Black Student Union and the Black Faculty and Staff Association who claim minority students on campus feel threatened when black suspects are named in crime alerts. “Efforts to reduce crime should never be at the expense of our Black men, or any specific group of people likely to be targeted,” stated the letter. Vice President of University Services Pamela Wheelock responded that while she shares the letter-writers’ concerns over possible profiling, “I believe that sharing more information in our Crime Alerts, not less, is most beneficial in terms of public safety, especially when that information is available.”

• Maranatha Baptist University, a small Christian school of about 1400 students in Wisconsin, has relegated its “Crusaders” team name and mascot to the dust heap after it was deemed too controversial. The campus has received no complaints about the name, which has been in use since the school’s founding in 1968. “In light of our global outreach and more advanced understanding of how things could be perceived, we want to avoid controversy,” explained the university’s executive vice president Matt Davis.

• A pro-life display on the campus of the University of Southern California that was set up to commemorate the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision was repeatedly defaced. The display was organized by USC Students for Life and included a photo of a fetus in utero, information about post-abortion counseling and 275 paper hearts meant to stand for the number of abortions that take place every two hours in America. Posters in the display were ripped in half (and later taped back together) and two female students were discovered laying waste to the rest of the display. After one of those students remained to apologize and discuss her views on abortion, Students for Life elected not to file a complaint.

Top Stories:

• Two staffers for the conservative campus paper, The Dartmouth Review, were denied entry to a strategy session held by leftist campus activists on how to commemorate Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on campus after admitting that they were not registered Democrats. When the students attempted to enter the meeting, they were halted at the door by one of the organizers who demanded to know their political affiliation. After stating that they were “registered independents” the Review staffers were told that the meeting was private and they could not attend. “What I am really frustrated at is the fact that we can’t have reasonable discussions about these issues,” commented Sandor Farkas, one of the students denied access to the meeting. “It has to be very private, secretive – and I don’t think that represents the spirit of MLK or in trying to create an awareness of various issues.”

• During the subsequent events held for MLK Day, Dartmouth student Jalil Bishop, who is the president of the campus Afro-American Society, delayed the invited keynote speaker, ABC News correspondent John Quinones, from taking the podium for 20 minutes, while he led the audience in an angry protest. As part of the protest, large numbers of sign-carrying students mounted the stage to join Bishop while shouting, “No justice! No peace!” Bishop continued to address the audience, urging it to “stand if you understand that we must eradicate white supremacy” and stating that Dartmouth is “complicit in failing to break down the structure that keeps so many black and brown bodies across the country and around the world marginalized, and keeps so many white bodies benefiting from that marginalization.”

• Florida Carry, Inc., a pro-Second Amendment group that defends citizens’ rights to carry firearms, has filed a lawsuit against the University of Florida alleging that the University has disregarded a previous ruling stating that its campus gun regulations are unconstitutional. Current UF policy prohibits the carrying of firearms or weapons anywhere on university property. Florida Carry alleges that instead of heeding calls to reform these unconstitutional policies, the University merely added an “Intent” footnote to its current regulations. “Nationwide, millions of adult university faculty, students, and their families live in university owned housing,” states Florida Carry’s press release. “The fact that state housing facilities run by Florida Universities continue to deprive law abiding adults of their fundamental right to keep and bear arms in their homes, years after the clear decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court that such bans are unconstitutional, is unconscionable.”

• The 2014 annual Modern Language Association convention, a gathering of literary academics, featured a roundtable discussion on “Academic Boycotts: A Conversation about Israel and Palestine which included supporters of the anti-Semitic Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, but no opponents. Pro-Israel groups Hillel International and Israel on Campus Coalition attempted to host a discussion at the convention but were denied by the MLA which claimed they had submitted their application too late. Participants at the roundtable on Israel included Omar Barghouti, the co-founder of the BDS movement, as well as Wesleyan professor Richard Ohmann who signed a letter declaring that Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians constitutes “one of the most massive, ethnocidal atrocities of modern times.”

• The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF), a statewide union which represents faculty and personnel on Pennsylvania state campuses, has voiced its opposition to a proposed policy that would permit the carrying of weapons, including firearms, in open areas on campus such as parking lots and sidewalks. The policy would not permit weapons inside buildings or at class activities, sporting events, or other organized outside events. The taskforce recommending the policy includes police officers, students, faculty, members of the system’s board of governors and university presidents. The taskforce’s recommendation echoes the guidance provided by lawyers for the system who note that wholesale bans on weapons on the grounds of public campuses have been declared unconstitutional in recent years.

• A student at The College of New Jersey has courageously come forward to expose the pro-Obamacare and anti-Republican rantings of her German professor. In a recent exposé, student Emma Colton recounts how her German for Beginners professor John Benjamin used his classroom lectern to encourage students to “examine the great benefits of Obamacare” while insulting the Tea Party as “very moronic.” Colton notes that it is only now after her final grade has been recorded in this course that she feels comfortable in coming forward with her experience of classroom indoctrination.

• Attempts by the student government at Cornell to cut the budget of the African, Latino, Asian, Native American Students Intercultural Programming Board (ALANA) were rejected and characterized as discriminatory despite drastic overspending by the group and the outright loss of $8,000 in unaccounted funds. While the Cornell Student Assembly recommends a funding limit of $10 per attending student at events, ALANA funded some events at a cost of up to $92 per student and wasted student funds on trivialities such as $450 for pins for the group’s executive board. Ultimately, ALANA’s budget was reduced only slightly to $108,000 for the next two years as opposed to $118,000 for the 2012-2014 allocation after attempts to dramatically reign in the budget were characterized by supporters as failing to be “sensitive to the needs of cultural umbrella and programming organizations like ALANA.”

• As part of an art project on racism, a black student at Sacramento State University designed an outdoor exhibit featuring the apparent lynching of two white people. The white individuals were actors who were displayed dangling from a tree on campus with nooses encircling their necks. Student Christina Edwards who designed the piece stated that it was meant “to bring to light social injustices and the issue of inequality that impacts me and my community as a whole.” Edwards did not seek University approval to set up her display and administrators are looking into whether any campus rules were violated.

• The American Studies Association (ASA) voted in December to support a boycott of all academic institutions in Israel, the only liberal democracy in the Middle East, while taking no action against the numerous tyrannical states and dictatorships across the globe. The resolution stated that the ASA “endorses and will honor the call of Palestinian civil society for a boycott of Israeli academic institutions. It is also resolved that the ASA supports the protected rights of students and scholars everywhere to engage in research and public speaking about Israel-Palestine and in support of the boycott, divestment, and sanctions (BDS) movement.” Dozens of colleges and universities in America, including Harvard and Yale, have spoken out opposing the ASA’s vote as prejudiced and several have withdrawn from ASA membership entirely. Among the testimony considered by the ASA was that of Communist terrorist Angela Davis who compared the situation of Palestinians to the Jim Crow South and Richard Falk, a 9/11 “truther” and anti-Semite.

• The University of Michigan chapter of Young Americans for Liberty, a libertarian campus group, has filed a lawsuit alleging that the University’s decision to deny them funding constitutes unconstitutional political discrimination. Officials from the university stated that they were ineligible for university funding because their events and activities were “political.” But other campus groups with a clear left-wing political agenda, including the NAACP and Immigrant Rights Advocacy do receive university funding. The lawsuit against the University was filed by the Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian legal group, on behalf of Young Americans for Liberty.

Minneapolis Community and Technical College has issued a formal reprimand to African-American professor Shannon Gibney charging that her comments in class “single[d] out white male students” and thereby “created a hostile learning environment” for these pupils. Gibney claims that the students took her lecture on “structural racism” personally and filed a racial discrimination complaint after she challenged them to do so. In a letter appended to Gibney’s file, the College’s Vice President of Academic Affairs held that it is “troubling that the manner in which you led a discussion on the very important topic of structural racism alienated two students who may have been most in need of learning about this subject.” This latest charge is Gibney’s second formal reprimand for racial discrimination against white students. In 2009, MCTC issued an earlier reprimand after Gibney was accused of targeting white male students on the campus newspaper staff for not working hard enough to eliminate racial bias from the paper. Gibney is currently suing MCTC in a class action lawsuit joined by six other faculty members.

• The director of public safety at Missouri State University is raising concerns about the use of fluorescent nerf guns in a popular campus roll-playing game of Humans vs. Zombies. “I don’t know that it is necessarily a danger to campus. It is a disruption to campus,” safety director Don Clark told a local radio station. “We cannot tell people that ‘if you see someone with a gun, it might be a Nerf gun, so just disregard it.’” The University is considering a ban on the Nerf guns despite a student government poll showing that students overwhelmingly oppose such a ban.

• An administrator at Furman College in South Carolina was caught on video attempting to confiscate flyers critical of Rev. Jesse Jackson from conservative students who were distributing them outside an event where Jackson was speaking on campus. Video taken of the incident shows Furman Special Events Coordinator Gayle Warth demanding that a student distributing the flyers turn them all over to her. When the student refused, Warth claimed that he could not distribute materials without “pre-approval.” A spokesman for the university defended the administration stating, “Furman is satisfied that no one was prevented from expressing their opinions.”

• The student government at the University of California Berkeley passed a unanimous resolution barring the term “illegal immigrant” from their discussions and communications. “No human being is illegal,” states the resolution which holds that the term is “racially charged” and leads to “punitive and discriminatory actions aimed primarily at immigrants and communities of color.” The resolution suggests that student government members substitute other terms including “‘Foreign nationals,’ ‘undocumented immigrants,’ ‘immigrants without papers’ and ‘immigrants seeking status.’” UCLA passed a similar measure last summer.

• The University of Texas—Austin chapter of the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) were forced to cancel a planned “Catch an Illegal Immigrant” game on campus after administrators issued strong condemnations of the event and implied that participants might face disciplinary action. Vice President for Diversity and Community Engagement Gregory Vincent wrote in a public statement, “If the members of YCT carry out their plan for ‘Catch an Illegal Immigrant,’ they are willfully ignoring the honor code and contributing to the degradation of our campus culture.” Movie star America Ferrera also got involved, leading a campus solidarity march of hundreds of students and activists to protest the event.

New York City Police Commissioner Ray Kelly was forced from the stage at Brown University by students enraged by the NYC police’s “stop-and-frisk” policy. Kelly was at the University to give an address on “Proactive Policing in America’s Biggest City” but dozens of student activists created such an uproar, heckling Kelly with accusations of racism, that he was unable to continue. In defense of their conduct, one Brown student explained that they had earlier petitioned the university to cancel Kelly’s speech, but when administrators refused “we decided to cancel it for them.” Brown University President Christina Paxson released a statement calling the student’s behavior “indefensible” and “an affront both to civil democratic society and to the university’s core values.”

Afro-beat band Shokazoba is alleging that Hampshire College cancelled their planned performance at a campus Halloween party after students posted complaints on Facebook that they were “too white.” According to the band’s keyboardist “The reason they gave us was that their students felt unsafe. When we asked what made them feel that way, they had no concrete answers and the comments about us from a small group of people were deleted from the Facebook wall.” Ironically, the contract that the band signed actually prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion and other characteristics.

Administrators at Washington University in St. Louis issued a harsh denunciation of several students who posted a Halloween photo on Facebook depicting themselves dressed as soldiers with water guns and guarding another student costumed as Osama bin Laden. The photo was titled “Halloween ’13 Amurrica.” “The image also is entirely inconsistent with who we are as an institution, our values and the way in which we engage in the world around us,” Wash U. administrators wrote in their statement. A Muslim student on campus, Mahroh Jahangiri, went even further in her condemnation, stating that the photo represents “a broader, more aggressive (and apparently violent) Islamophobia rampant here at WashU and in the United States.”

In response to planned protests against conservative speaker Ann Coulter’s upcoming appearance at the University of Southern California (USC), administrators at the school have tasked the College Republicans, who are hosting the event, with funding security for the event and developing a protest reaction plan. Left-wing students on campus had attempted to persuade administrators to cancel the event, but were unsuccessful. One student commented on the event’s Facebook page that ““I’m gonna be really surprised if this women makes it out of USC alive lol.”

Several universities across the country have taken action to warn students not to wear “offensive” costumes on Halloween. At the University of Colorado Boulder, Dean of Students Christian Gonzales urged students to “consider the impact your costume decision may have on others in the CU community.” Among the costumes she deemed offensive are cowboys, Indians, geishas, “squaws” and those including sombreros or blackface. At the University of Minnesota, the Office of Student Affairs issued an email to students cautioning them against costumes that “inappropriately perpetuate racial, cultural and gender stereotypes.” The Multicultural Center at the University of Wisconsin Madison posted a blog, “Does this costume make me look racist?”, which lists several categories of outfits to be avoided including “costumes that appropriate a culture,” those guilty of “Romanticizing a culture” including “’poca-hottie,’ gypsy, belly dancer, and geisha” which “have ties to oppression, rape, and genocide” and those which stereotype cultures including “The Mariachi, the Kimono princess and the kung fu.”

I just no longer assume that the people who happen to hold those values are less likely than people who share my political outlooks to have acquired the sorts of knowledge and dispositions that a decent science comprehension scale measures.”

University of Arizona associate professor Pat Willerton was caught on video telling his “Politics, Policy and Governing” class that viewers who watch Fox News are less informed than their counterparts who get their news from liberal media sources: “you look at MSNBC, ABC, CNN, all of these cases, the average viewer knows more than the person who doesn’t consult any source. When they survey people who watch Fox News regularly, they know less.” Willerton exhorted his students to “look at the studies” by which he meant a much-derided 2010 survey by WorldPublicOpinion.org. Prof. Willerton neglected to mention any criticism of this study or Fox New’s point-by-point refutation. An Arizona administrator defended Willerton stating that “To all indications, he is conducting the class responsibly and within his authority and expertise.”

Professors at campuses across the nation have been quick to lay blame for the government shutdown. And they are not blaming Barack Obama or the Democrats. University of Pennsylvania Associate Professor Anthea Butler claimed on twitter that racism against President Obama was responsible for the shutdown stating that a previous shutdown had taken place under the leadership of “fake black president Clinton” but this time Republicans have a “real black president to mess with.”

Assistant Professor Rachel Slocum at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse sent students in her geography class an email stating that “some of the data gathering assignment will be impossible to complete until the Republican/tea party controlled House of Representatives agrees to fund the government” due to the Census website, among other resources, being unavailable. When a student objected to the partisan email, Slocum sent a second email to her class claiming that she hadn’t “meant to be partisan” but still laying out essentially the same argument and further stating that “It’s important to recognize that within the Republican party there is disagreement over how to govern. Many are not happy with this all or nothing style that people on the far right (who refer to themselves as the Tea Party) are advocating.”

Students at Columbia University and Barnard College staging a joint production of The Vagina Monologues have banned white students from participating in the performance on the grounds that the show “has historically overlooked the empowerment of women of color, queer women, and trans* folk, among others—often replicating and perpetuating the same systems of power and privilege that prompted the playwright, Eve Ensler, to write The Vagina Monologues in the first place.” The Facebook page for the event notes that the board’s decision to restrict participation to “self-identified women of color” was unanimous and will “center traditionally marginalized identities within the feminist community, creating a space in which the voices, stories, and experiences of women of color can be heard, acknowledged, and addressed.”

University of Maryland administrator William Dorland, who serves as the director of the university’s Honors College, stated in an email welcoming students back to campus for the fall term that “This year, we learned that it is legal to hunt down and kill American children in Florida,” alluding to the acquittal of George Zimmerman in the shooting of Trayvon Martin. Dorland continued on to note that, “This year, the most activist Supreme Court in the history of the United States and radical factions of gun owners, gun manufacturers, and marijuana users are challenging the very fabric of the nation…” Despite complaints from some students and faculty about the email, Dorland insisted “In my job here I’m pretty apolitical.”

Top News:

• University of Kansas journalism professor David Guth has been suspended from his teaching duties after he responded to the horrific Navy Yard shooting by stating his wish on twitter that the next crazed gunman would kill the children of members of the National Rifle Association. Guth’s tweet read: “#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the #NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters. Shame on you. May God damn you.” In a statement released by KU, Ann Brill, dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications in which Guff taught, stated, “While the First Amendment allows anyone to express an opinion, that privilege is not absolute and must be balanced with the rights of others. That’s vital to civil discourse. Professor Guth’s views do not represent our school and we do not advocate violence directed against any group or individuals.”

• A textbook used to teach Advanced Placement History at Guyer High School in Denton, incorrectly summarizes the Second Amendment, making it appear that it pertains only to soldiers in a “state militia” and not to ordinary citizens. The summary provided in the text reads, “The people have a right to keep and bear arms in a state militia.” By contrast, the actual Second Amendment to the United States Constitution holds that “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.” The textbook is also used at an indeterminate number of other high schools.

• A student who attempted to pass out copies of the United States Constitution on Constitution Day, September 17, at Modesto Junior College in California was told that his actions violated the rules of the College. The student, 25-year-old Robert Van Tuinen, was confronted by an intimidating campus security guard who claimed that he could only do so in a tiny free speech zone, and that he was required to fill out forms to schedule his distribution of materials in advance. Van Tuinen caught the exchange on video and is being supported by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education which called the incident “depressing and nauseating.” The College claims to be “looking into the incident.”

• The regents of Colorado University, in a unanimous vote, passed a resolution adding “political affiliation” to the school’s non-discrimination policy, thereby ensuring that conservative students are protected from professors who might penalize them for their political views in class. The University will also conduct a study to determine whether professors are respectful of students who differ with their (typically leftist) views in the classroom. These decisions put into place protections that Students for Academic Freedom, a program of the David Horowitz Freedom Center, first attempted to enact in 2003.

When two freshman sisters at UCLA were told their mandatory orientation on sexual harassment would include a section on sex education, they respectfully requested exemption from that part of the program. As Catholics, Angelica and Bella Ayala did not want to participate in the sex-ed presentation — which discussed, among other topics, how to put on a condom and how to ask someone to have sex with you — because contraception and premarital sex violate their moral code. But the two girls were swiftly reprimanded for their small protest and told they were required to attend another session, even if it violated their conscience.

Colorado University shields students from political harassment by their professors.

In a unanimous 8-to-0 vote, the Colorado University regents have passed a resolution to add “political affiliation” to the school’s non-discrimination policy, thus protecting students from political harassment by their professors, including punitive retributions for expressing their views in class. Colorado U. is also moving forward with a study, approved by the regents in June, which will evaluate whether professors currently show proper respect for the differing (usually conservative) opinions of their students. This path-breaking resolution was the work of the two courageous regents who sponsored the resolution, Sue Sharkey and Jim Geddes.

The resolution amends Article 10 of the UC “Laws of the Regents” to state, “The University of Colorado does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, creed, religion, sexual orientation, GENDER IDENTITY, GENDER EXPRESSION or veteran status, POLITICAL AFFILIATION, OR POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY in admission and access to, and treatment and employment in, its educational programs and activities.”

It goes on to add that, “The university is committed to the principle of non-discrimination and does not tolerate harassment on any basis, including sex, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, sexual orientation, GENDER IDENTITY, GENDER EXPRESSION or age, POLITICAL AFFILIATION, OR POLITICAL PHILOSOPHY.” [Words in capital letters are newly added to the policy].

Speaking on the resolution’s impact, Regent Sharkey commented that it “really does send a very good statement about the University of Colorado, and in a very positive way. … We’re not going to discriminate based upon a person’s political philosophy, political affiliation, gender identity or gender expression.”

This critical victory in the fight to protect the academic freedom of students and faculty has been a long time in coming. In the fall of 2003, the David Horowitz Freedom Center launched a campaign in Colorado to promote an Academic Bill of Rights for students to achieve a similar result. The core principles of the bill were adopted in a Joint Resolution of the Colorado legislature but because of the opposition of the teacher unions and the Democratic Party were never enforced.

In the spring of 2004, the reform campaign went national as the Freedom Center’s newly created organization, Students for Academic Freedom, was activated on 100 campuses nationwide. Over the next seven years many victories were achieved in educating the general public about the problem of political persecution of conservative students. But equally many defeats were suffered as the powerful teacher unions and their Democratic Party allies went into action and blocked every single reform the Freedom Center was able to put in place. The unions were even able to remove all the regents who voted to adopt the Academic Bill of Rights at Illinois’ College of DuPage, and to expunge the principles of intellectual diversity they had put in place as well.

In the summer of 2004, the Students for Academic Freedom campaign approached 88 university presidents, including the president of Colorado University, and asked them to revise their anti-discrimination policies to include political, ideological, and intellectual diversity. Only two of the 88 responded and neither of them was willing to consider the proposal.

Now, nearly 10 years later, two Colorado University regents have persuaded their colleagues, including several Democrats, to achieve that goal. Bravo, Sue Sharkey and Jim Geddes.

“I am thrilled with this result,” commented David Horowitz. “I applaud Sue Sharkey and Jim for waging what I am sure was a lonely fight among their fellow Republicans as well as Democrats, to do the right thing and begin to restore an academic environment to our beleaguered university system. I have spoken to thousands of students in almost fifty states and heard their tales of professorial discrimination, harassment and outright intimidation. I have known first-hand the determined opposition to academic freedom of the American Association of University Professors and the American Federation of Teachers, and have felt the sting of their slanders. So I know the kind of backbone it took to get this resolution passed. What they have achieved lifts some of the burden of frustration from my shoulders, and I look forward to other universities adopting this needed reform in the coming months and years.”

While teaching his Literatures, Cultures, Identities course on August 29, Penn accused Republicans of attempting to suppress the black vote and characterized them as “cheap” and claiming “they have already raped this country and gotten everything out of it they possibly could.”

• The College Republicans at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill are speaking out after the finance committee of the Student Congress cut their annual budget by more than 75% while doling out substantial increases to two left-wing campus groups. CR chairman Nate Pencook protested the decision, telling the Student Congress: “I really came to encourage you on two magic words: intellectual diversity.” The budget cut means that the CRs may not be able to bring as many conservative speakers to campus as planned.

• Prof. Andrea Hatcher, a professor of political science at Sewanee: The University of the South, revealed on twitter that an Obama-advocacy organization sought to use her to recruit students to publicly praise President Obama’s policies. “I don’t shill for any interest group or party,” Hatcher declared in response. The organization, called Organizing for Action, has its roots in the Obama presidential campaigns, and did not return calls from journalists.

• After a student at Florida State University posted racially offensive comments on a university-wide social media network, university administrators responded by declaring that “Florida State has zero tolerance for racist speech, no matter which medium is used to communicate the message” and promised to “take appropriate action within University policy.” The Foundation for Individual Rights in Education is looking into the case, noting that “FSU’s professed ‘zero tolerance’ stance toward racist speech” is “plainly irreconcilable” with its obligation as a public institution to uphold the First Amendment.

LSU’s ‘Free Speech’ Zones Raise A Disturbing Question: Are We Losing The War? [Forbes.com]

This fall I will celebrate 12 years defending the basic rights of students on college campuses across the country, and in that time my organization, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE), has had some great successes. But while we win battle after battle, sometimes I fear we are losing the war. Time and time again I see examples of how campuses are teaching a generation, primarily through example, how to think like censors and how to apply all the wrong lessons about what it means to live in a free society.

The incidents, which included posting racist, anti-Semitic and antigay messages and graffiti around the campus and harassing a female student, sparked a one-day cancellation of classes so that students could attend a teach-in on the evils of racism and homophobia.

• Administrators at the University of Denver have refused calls by students and alumni to reinstate “Denver Boone,” a Daniel Boone-like figure who wears a coon-skin cap, as the University mascot on grounds that he doesn’t adequately represent the diverse student body at UD. “Boone was a polarizing figure that did not reflect the growing diversity of the UD community, but rather was an image that many women, persons of color, international students and faculty members found difficult to relate to as defining the pioneering spirit,” Chancellor Robert Coombe stated in a letter to the university community.

• Harvard University has hired former democratic mayor of Los Angeles, Antonio Villaraigosa, as a “visiting fellow” for the upcoming fall semester, despite numerous scandals surrounding Villaraigosa’s campaigns and time in office. Among these blots on his record are the 31 ethics violations alleged by the Los Angeles Ethics Commission during his 2003 bid for City Council and his use of nearly half a million dollars in federal stimulus funds to refit the mayoral yacht.

How our protest against an anti-Israel extremist for UC Student Regent sparked a national conversation.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center’s public opposition to an extreme anti-Israel candidate for UC Student Regent has helped to trigger a national conversation about the growing problem of anti-Semitism on college campuses.

UC Berkeley student Sadia Saifuddin was recently appointed student regent-designate for the University of California over protests by the Freedom Center and a few others who opposed her nomination on the grounds that her extreme anti-Israel views and activism with organizations known for their anti-Semitism make her unfit to represent all students in the UC system. The controversy sparked by the Freedom Center’s opposition has become national news.

During her years at Berkeley, Saifuddin was a leader in two Muslim Brotherhood-linked organizations, the Muslim Students Association and Students for Justice in Palestine, which regularly invite anti-Semitic speakers to UC campuses and sponsor an annual hate-week known as “Israeli Apartheid Week.” She was also an active participant in the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement which calls for the destruction of the Jewish state and led vicious attacks on Tammi Rossman-Benjamin, a lecturer at UC Santa Cruz who has dedicated herself to protecting Jewish students from anti-Semitism on UC campuses.

In an open letter sent to the University of California Board of Regents, the Freedom Center’s chairman, David Horowitz, and director of campus campaigns, Jeffrey Wienir, urged the Board to reconsider their selection: “Appointing Sadia Saifuddin to the Board of Regents would be an offense to the ‘Principles of Community’ for UC Berkeley which are supposed to be core values in the UC system, and which call on UC students to ‘respect the differences as well as the commonalities that bring us together and call for civility and respect in our personal interactions,’’ the letter stated. “How is it respectful for the organizations that Sadia Saifuddin represents to sponsor ‘Israeli Apartheid Weeks’ which support terrorist organizations like Hamas and call for the destruction of the Jewish state?”

Despite the regents’ failure to reconsider their nomination of Saifuddin, the Freedom Center’s protests garnered widespread press coverage of Saifuddin’s questionable ties to anti-Semitic organizations and helped to raise awareness of the often-threatening environment confronting Jewish students on UC campuses.

In covering the story, the Associated Press framed their coverage in light of the Freedom Center’s objections: “The University of California’s governing board confirmed its first Muslim student member Wednesday, despite some Jewish groups’ claims that she marginalized Jewish students and promoted an anti-Israel agenda.” The AP story about Saifuddin’s controversial nomination was picked up by dozens of other newspapers and websites.

Numerous other publications and websites including The San Francisco Chronicle, The Los Angeles Times, The San Jose Mercury News, IsraelNationalNews.com, JWeekly.com and The University Herald picked up the story that Saifuddin’s confirmation was controversial because of her anti-Israel leanings and associations, with many directly citing the Freedom Center’s stance.

In an editorial in the Los Angeles Times, the editors offered their congratulations to Saifuddin but noted that the “one glitch” in her resume is her outspoken criticism of Israel which the editors labeled “the third rail of UC politics.” The Times editorial went on to quote David Horowitz’s statement in his open letter that “If [Saifuddin] were confirmed, it would set a dangerous precedent to encourage anti-Semitism on campus, which is already a big problem in the UC system.”

We may have lost the battle against Saifuddin’s confirmation as UC Regent. But by sparking a national conversation about how her anti-Israel activism and leadership in organizations known for their anti-Semitism should disqualify her for such a position, we are a step closer to winning the war.

Even before the Trayvon Martin verdict was announced on July 13, George Mason University, located in Fairfax, VA, announced that it planned to offer an academic course on Martin’s life and death in the context of racial politics. The course, titled “Race and Politics, Trayvon Martin,” will be taught by Prof. Rutledge M. Dennis, who teaches in the African-American Studies, Sociology and Anthropology departments. According to the course description, the class “will examine how racial and cultural politics were driving forces in the public debates and controversies surrounding such cases as the Scottsboro Boys in Alabama, Robert Williams in North Carolina, Emmett Till in Mississippi, Medgar Evers in Mississippi, Martin Luther King in Georgia, Angela Davis in California, O.J. Simpson in California, Rodney King in California, and currently, Trayvon Martin in Florida.”

Audrey Jarvis, a student at Sonoma State University in California, was working at freshman orientation on June 27th when an employee of the University’s Associated Students Productions asked her to remove her crucifix necklace claiming that it might offend or intimidate the freshmen they were recruiting. The employee, Erik Dickson, told Jarvis that he had received a letter from the chancellor of California State University stating a policy against wearing religious items. Five days after Jarvis was asked to remove her cross, SSU President Ruben Armiñana denied the existence of such a policy and issued an apology stating “Somebody made a mistake…you are free to display whatever religious instrument you wish.”

UC-Berkeley Law Professor Jonathan Simon reacted to the Zimmerman verdict by declaring that the jury suffered from racial prejudice, even if they might not be aware of it: “Imagine that Trayvon was a 17 year old female, a 54 year old white male, or even a 17 year old white male. In all of those cases the prosecutors would have had an easier job convincing the jury that Zimmerman acted recklessly in firing his gun… In convincing the jury that George Zimmerman was reasonable in fearing for his life, the defense had a wind at its back that would not have been there had Trayvon been female or white.”

Meticulous and detailed, its conclusions are a blistering indictment of the administration of former school President Mary Jane Saunders.

Learn About Trayvon Martin on Your Own Damn Dime [CampusReform.org]

Campus Reform learned last week that George Mason University (GMU) in Fairfax, VA plans to offer a class on Trayvon Martin this fall. Given GMU’s reputation as bastion for leftist thought, this class will no doubt be used to canonize the slain Florida youth while demonizing the now acquitted George Zimmerman. No doubt Professor Rutledge Dennis of the Sociology and Anthropology Department plans to tear apart the verdict, arrived at by 6-person jury, and press upon the way he understands the narrative from his perch in the ivory tower in Fairfax Station.

Months ago, in my Common Sense e-letter, I took issue with Tulane University Professor Melissa Harris-Perry — who hosts an eponymous MSNBC weekend show — for declaring, in one promotional ad, that “we have to break through our kind of private idea that kids belong to their parents, or kids belong to their families, and recognize that kids belong to whole communities.”

It’s not unheard-of for a college to tell a faculty member partway through a probationary period before tenure that things just aren’t working out. And that may well be why Weber State University failed to rehire Jared Lisonbee, a professor of child and family studies. But the timing of his termination – after he and his wife spoke out against plans to name a new family program after a Mormon leader who has expressed controversial views on gays, women and intellectuals – has raised suspicion about what motivated the decision.

Perhaps the Obama administration was not expecting a great public outcry this spring when it unveiled a “blueprint” for how campuses across the nation will henceforth need to handle complaints of sexual misconduct. Under the scheme as announced on May 9, colleges must crack down on a wide array of sexually oriented conduct defined as “unwelcome” to one or more persons, including many instances of what the feds quaintly term “verbal conduct,” better known as “speech.”

The regents of the University of Colorado moved to go forward with an independent survey to determine whether there is sufficient respect for political diversity on the Boulder campus. A second measure, which would have banned discrimination based on political affiliation or belief, was considered by the regents but postponed for further review.

Members of the University of Buffalo’s chapter of Students for Life have filed a lawsuit against the University charging that administrators violated their constitutional rights by forcing them to spend over $600 on unnecessary security for a campus event because university officials deemed it “controversial.”

An instructor at Florida Atlantic University, who was barred from campus last fall after instructing students in his class to write the word “Jesus” on a piece of paper and then step on it, has been rehired by the university. Administrators came to the conclusion that the instructor had done nothing wrong.

Foundation for Individual Rights co-founder Harvey Silvergate has released his picks for the 16th Annual “Campus Muzzle” awards – the campuses in New England featuring the worst record on free speech. Among his picks for this year are Yale University, which was singled out because its leaders “cheerfully accepted restrictions of academic and political freedom on its new Singapore campus” and Tufts University, which refused to allow the Tufts Christian Fellowship to enact standards requiring candidates for leadership to follow “basic Biblical truths of Christianity.”

Silenced on Campus: The College Muzzles [The Portland Phoenix]

If freedom of speech, the right to associate with whomever one might wish, and other constitutionally protected liberties had a home, you would think that it would be on the nation’s college campuses.
In an open letter sent to the University of California Board of Regents, David Horowitz urged the Board to reconsider its selection of Berkeley student Sadia Saifuddin as UC Student Regent for the 2014-2015 school year, noting her leadership in multiple campus organizations tied to Islamic terrorism which promote anti-Semitism and a threatening environment for Jewish students on UC’s campuses. “Appointing Sadia Saifuddin to the Board of Regents would be an offense to the ‘Principles of Community’ for UC Berkeley which are supposed to be core values in the UC system, and which call on UC students to ‘respect the differences as well as the commonalities that bring us together and call for civility and respect in our personal interactions,’’ Horowitz wrote to the Regents.

Sadia Saiffudin also figures in another recent campus scandal—the persecution of UC Santa Cruz lecturer Tammi Rossman-Benjamin who has dedicated herself for years to defending Jewish students from campus anti-Semitism. Saiffudin has led these attacks on Rossman-Benjamin through her role in pro-Palestinian campus groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood-linked Muslim Students Association, which slandered the lecturer as an instigator of “Islamophobic hate speech” and “inflammatory, hostile and racist assumptions” for her efforts to counter the hostile and threatening tactics of these same pro-Palestinian groups on campus.

Professor Linda Brunton at Columbia State Community College in Tennessee crossed the line from instruction to indoctrination when she ordered students in her psychology class to wear “Rainbow Coalition” ribbons expressing support for gay rights and defamed those who oppose gay marriage as “uneducated bigots” who “attack homosexuals with hate.”

Conservative pundit Caleb Bonham revealed the extent of anti-conservative sentiment on college campuses by asking students at the University of Colorado – Boulder to sign an oversize thank-you card addressed to the IRS expressing their gratitude for the institution’s targeting of conservative and Tea Party groups. Many of the student signatories eagerly offered their own commentary explaining why the IRS demonstrated good judgment by harassing conservative groups.

No Free Speech for Exposers of Campus Anti-Semitism [Frontpagemag.com]

In her controversial book, From Time Immemorial, which examined the false narrative concerning the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, Joan Peters referred to something she identified as “turnspeak,” “twisted rhetoric artfully aimed at the hearts and minds of the West, originated by the Arabs, and rivaling the Soviets, who are veterans of ‘semantic infiltration’ and the word war. Just as, in their lexicon, totalitarianism translates into ‘democracy,’ and degradation becomes ‘freedom,’ so has the flawed but democratic Israel been branded ‘Zionist imperialist’ and ‘racist.’” First used in 1939 to describe German propaganda after its invasion of Czechoslovakia, “turnspeak” in that instance was used to invert truth, enabling Germany to blame the Czechs for the aggression and belligerency they themselves were perpetrating.

University administrators are supposed to be the guardians of academic freedom at our institutions of higher education. They are charged with ensuring that faculty are granted the right to teach and students the right to learn. But the response of USC’s provost who defended a professor caught on tape ranting about his radical and extreme views in class shows how school officials can misinterpret and misuse this essential doctrine to allow indoctrinators free reign.

The professor in question, Dr. Richard Dekmejian, is a professor of political science at USC who specializes in national security issues, Middle East studies, terrorism and other related topics. The twenty-minute classroom recording was made in Fall 2012 by USC student Tyler Talgo, who may face consequences for his actions since USC’s Student Code of Conduct strictly prohibits making such recordings—a fact that USC’s provost was sure to note in her statement on the incident.

Even at a leftist bastion such as USC, Professor Dekmejian can be considered an extremist. In a mere twenty minutes of recorded classroom footage, Dekmejian repeatedly hurls insults at every Republican president since Reagan, claiming that they were “lazy” and that they “lied to the American people,” while praising Jimmy Carter for “still going around doing good things.” He also blames Israel for the radicalization of Hamas and claims that Islam deserves praise for its treatment of Jews and Christians.

Dekmejian’s radical rantings skewer so many conservative targets that it is difficult to find any cohesion to his lecture. On the Bush Administration’s motives for starting the war in Iraq, Dekmejian states, “Now the oil companies wanted the United States to take Iraq and establish a pro-America dictatorship there because that’s the only way you’re going to run Iraq. Talking about democracy as you go into Iraq as an excuse, you must be stupid or lying. That’s the Bush Administration.”

He characterizes “right wing Christian evangelicals” as “Get[ting] happy on television every time there’s a conflict in the Middle East” because “they think that the Book of Revelations tells them that the messiah…Jesus is going to come… all we need is a war in the Middle East involving Israel and the Arabs.”

In discussing FDR’s presidential run, Dekmejian mocks Herbert Hoover’s contrary argument against government intervention and statement that “in time the system will correct itself” opining, “hmmmmm….sure.”

Towards the end of the recording, Dekmejian unleashes his venom on Israel and its prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. “There’s going to be an election in Israel, by the way, because Netanyahu wants to come back even more powerful,” he tells the class. “God help the globe. And Israel. And the neighbors.”

He also offers the following explanation for Palestinian aggression towards Israel: “Hamas is the radicalized wing of the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood of Egypt in the Gaza Strip and guess who was among the people that helped its radicalization? Israel! Not only by not creating a Palestinian state but by encouraging the most extremist Muslim Brotherhood chairs.” Unsurprisingly, Dekmejian fails to mention that Hamas and its Islamist allies have rejected the offer of a Palestinian state multiple times since they will only be satisfied by Israel’s total annihilation and have served as the aggressor in the Middle East conflict since Israel’s founding.

Dekmejian also lauds Islam as superior to Christianity, noting that

“Under Sharia law, traditionally Muslims recognize three religions: Themselves (Islam) and the two religions that they came out of, that preceded them, Judaism and Christianity. So therefore Christians and Jews have certain rights, not equality, but they have certain rights…the great kings of Christian Europe, they persecuted Jews. They didn’t give them that kind of benefit. At least Islam did.”

Dekmejian fails to note for his class that Sharia law’s recognition of Jews and Christians allows them to levy a special tax on them and to seize their synagogues and temples without provocation or that many Christians suffer relentless persecution and fear for their lives in Islamic regimes such as Pakistan and Egypt, not to mention the Palestinian controlled territories.

Dekmejian even manages to disparage opponents of global warming theory, commenting,

“When [hurricane] Sandy came along and sand clogged and water clogged all of the East Coast of the United States…even those guys who don’t believe in climate change, uhhhhhhh, they’re saying now wait a minute. But they can’t allow the climate change, I mean people who don’t believe in climate change they don’t care if Manhattan goes to underwater.”

What climate change has to do with his academic areas of expertise he doesn’t bother to explain – but then why should he since his provost thinks he has license to say anything he wants in class.

All these attacks occurred in a mere twenty minutes. Imagine what his students must hear in the course of a semester!

Official university evaluations of Dekmejian’s teaching are not released to the public but one can get a good idea of his students’ opinions by visiting the online rating site, ratemyprofessors.com. A spate of recent reviews rate his teaching as being of “poor quality” and include such comments as “Unorganized, rambles, does not provide any time for input, questions, or discussion” and “he didn’t teach, [he] was trying to brainwash with political propaganda.” Another comment states explicitly, “This is the worst teacher. I would never recommend him… He obviously has his own agenda. Why was he ever hired in the first place?” Keep in mind that most of his students are typical left-leaning college students who are accustomed to one-sided teaching.

Rather than expressing concern at Dekmejian’s use of his podium to indoctrinate impressionable students with his radical views – which is a clear violation of their academic freedom, University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Elizabeth Garrett defended the professor, claiming that his conduct is protected under academic freedom, which merely demonstrates her own ignorance of the principles laid down in the 1915 Declaration on the Principles of Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure and its more recent iterations:

“Faculty members are entitled to freedom in the classroom in discussing their subjects,” Garrett said in a written statement – a clear falsehood since an astronomy professor telling students the moon is made of green cheese would soon be facing disciplinary hearings. “The freedom to take unpopular positions and the freedom to express those positions publicly are at the foundation of what it means to be a faculty member of a university… One of the most important principles of an academic community has been that academic inquiry and discussion be free from censorship or undue outside control.” This provost however did not utter a word in defense of conservative speakers like Ann Coulter or David Horowitz who had to visit her campus under armed guard because of the hostility to unpopular positions at her politically correct university.

Garrett did pointedly observe that the Student Code of Conduct “expressly prohibits” students from taping their professors without consent – a policy which is a thinly veiled attempt to prevent the public and tuition paying parents from seeing the academic depths to which USC’s liberal arts faculty has plunged in recent years.

Provost Garrett is correct that USC’s academic freedom policy protects the right of faculty to freely discuss their subjects in class. But this freedom is not without corresponding responsibilities, in particular the responsibility to act professionally and not to indoctrinate their students in the kind of half-witted prejudices that are on display in the video of Dekemejian’s rant.

USC’s academic freedom policy clearly states,

“As educational officers [faculty] should remember that the public may judge their profession and the University by their utterances. Hence, they should at all times be accurate, should exercise appropriate restraint, should show respect for the opinions of others, and should make every effort to indicate that they are not speaking for the University.”

Only an academic provost in today’s university system could fail to see that Dekemejian violated this policy.

The Dekmejian incident makes the second time in recent months that a USC faculty member has been caught on tape abusing his position to indoctrinate students with leftist diatribes. Rather than concerning themselves with the students who violate school policy to record these indoctrinators, Provost Garrett and USC’s administration would do better to spend their efforts reigning in their out-of-control faculty and re-familiarizing themselves with the true meaning of academic freedom.

In exposing this travesty, Tyler Talgo acted with great courage and performed an important public service.
