The German taxpayer remains one of the leading sponsors of hate groups targeting Israel and the Jewish people.

Reprinted from TheCommentator.com.

A week after Chancellor Angela Merkel reaffirmed her government’s commitment to fight anti-Semitism at a landmark rally in Berlin, a lot needs to be done on the ground to stop the rising tide of anti-Semitism.

At home, German Law enforcement authorities have not only shown apathy and inaction, as in the case of the Muslim Imam in Berlin who called for the extermination of Jews, or against demonstrators in many German cities blaring anti-Semitic slogans. Police have sometimes seemed to go out of their way, allowing demonstrators to use police-megaphones and vehicles to spread the hate – as in Frankfurt and Hagen recently.

Internationally, the German tax payer remains a leading sponsor of NGOs and groups that target Israel and the Jewish people.

According to conservative estimates provided by the watchdog group NGO Monitor, between 2010 and 2014 the German government gave more than €4 million to organizations in Israel and the Palestinian territories that are actively running campaigns to demonize and delegitimize the State of Israel.

Two German political foundations alone, the Rosa Luxembourg Foundation and the Heinrich Boell Foundation, could be funneling more than €2 million worth of taxpayer’s revenue every year to such groups.

According to NGO Monitor, both of these political foundations have shown a lack of transparency in their allocation practices, making it difficult to estimate the actual amount of money going to these groups. The real figures could be even higher.

Not surprisingly, both these foundations also happen to have a long history of supporting anti-Israel campaigns in Germany.

Kerstin Müller, the Green Party politician who was active in the anti-Israel Boycott-Movement and campaigned for the labelling of Israeli goods coming into the European Union, now heads the Heinrich Boell Foundation office in Tel Aviv.

The Rosa Luxembourg Foundation is affiliated to the far-Left party “Die Linke”, successor of the East German Communist Party (SED). The Luxembourg Foundation regularly organizes events for anti-Israel activists and publishes literature promoting Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) tactics directed against Israel.

The overall figures from Europe and other Western countries are just as staggering. Between 2011 and 2014 European governments gave over €25 million to Israeli and Palestinian NGOs that are involved in de-legitimization and anti-Israel Boycott campaigns. Globally, around €100 million are granted annually to NGOs operating from Europe, North America and elsewhere that run anti-Israel campaigns.

Many NGOs receiving funding from Germany are involved in Lawfare campaigns against Israel. Using this so-called Lawfare strategy, these activist groups seek to exploit legal provisions abroad to intimidate the Israeli government and officials with civil lawsuits and investigations.

The main purpose of the exercise is to harass, bully and use courts as platforms for activism, rather than achieving any legal outcome.

However, it is even more troubling when German funding goes to groups that are blatantly anti-Semitic. German funds allocated in the name of “development projects” end up with groups that regularly use anti-Semitic themes and imagery in their campaigns.

This stream of funding coming from German and other European countries is part of a sustained campaign to put pressure on Israel, forcing it into making one-sided concessions.

It is a diplomacy driven by a childish belief that all the conflicts in the Middle East would cease to exist, if only Israel could willingly shrink itself to whatever size Arab nations are willing to allow her — at a given point in time.

However, the geopolitical “arm-twisting” and demonization of Israel comes at a price.

Instead of lifting the level of education or developing the skills of the Palestinian youth, these groups continue to fuel the age old hostilities. And instead of helping impressionable Palestinian youth to think critically about the deficiencies in their own society and strive for real change, these groups present them with easy scapegoats in the form of Israel and the Jewish people.

This hatred of Israel has harmed Palestinian and Arab societies more than it has hurt the Israelis.

Today, when German politicians are grappling with the issue of rising anti-Semitism, it would be a good time for them to demand accountability from donor organizations and to take a closer look at the networks in Germany that fund this hate.

Recent anti-sematic riots in Germany are clearly a precursor of things to come. If migration from the Arab counties continues at the current pace, a good measure of this hate could be imported back to Germany, and that too is an issue we cannot ignore.

Reprinted from The Commentator.

While giving finishing touches to his Ph.D. dissertation the Dutch student Jerke de Vries had a seemingly harmless idea. A believing Christian that he was, he decided to thank God in his dissertation acknowledgement.

What seemed like a nice gesture to him, did not sit well with the members of the Dissertation Committee at the University of Wageningen (The Netherlands). They gave him a choice between God and the doctoral title.

He was ordered to blacken the sentence acknowledging God in several hundred printed copies of his dissertation, or face a certain rejection of his thesis.

Apparently in the committee’s view, it is one thing to acknowledge a favorite pub, a regular hang-out or even the local soccer team, like other batch mates, but by mentioning God the student had clearly crossed the norms of acceptability.

Finally, Jerke de Vries did bowed down to the dictates of the committee, but kept his pride by physically removing the entire acknowledgment page from several hundred copies of his dissertation, instead of blackening out the ‘objectionable’ sentence, as the committee had instructed.

What happened last week in a Dutch University is not an isolated case of academic overreach by overzealous members of a committee. Universities throughout Europe and North America are increasingly turning into hostile places, not only for believing Christians, but for anyone holding convictions other than the ones approved by the leftwing establishment.

The leftwing “Inquisitors” running amok on European campuses are not to be confused with the run-of-the-mill atheists or old school liberals. They have a well articulated faith and are anything but “liberal” in the originally intended meaning of the word.

Instead they are intolerant “professors” of the doctrine of religious Leftism bent up moulding young impressionable minds into their own image.

By default, they occupy the moral high ground in every campus debate. They claim to be impersonating dissent, while attacking every other dissenting opinion. They claim to be the champions of minority rights, while demonizing minority groups that do not confirm to the leftwing world view.

They take words like “democracy” hostage, while whitewashing the present and historical transgressions of leftist regimes and despots of the world.

These leftwing activists have deep contempt for the western society and laws, but are unhesitant in misusing free spaces and legal recourse provided by the society to slander, malign and destroy their perceived enemies.

By the end of the 1960s, sensing the failure and imminent disintegration of the radical student movement many European leftwing thinkers like the German agitator Rudi Dutschke called for a “long march through the institutions” as an alternative means of effecting “radical change” – alluding to the famous “Long March” that brought the Communist leader Mao Zedong to power in China.

They wanted a Cultural Revolution – another Maoist term – to transform society by taking control of academic and cultural institutions. This was in contrast to the classical Marxist notion of transforming society by taking over the means of production by force.

Today’s leftwing dominated academia is result of this meticulous ‘Long March’. Leftwing members of academia do not simply hold radical views, but take it upon themselves to indoctrinate their unsuspecting students. This indoctrination does not only take place in class rooms but permeates every aspect of teaching and formal learning.

In European countries like Germany, Holland or Belgium this indoctrination starts even more rigorously at the school level. A random look at the text books and curricula would prove the point. The constant looming threat of activism barging into classrooms makes even teachers with dissenting views toe the “party line”.

The Left has already succeeded in producing a resentful generation in times of economic stagnation. A generation not taught to use its rational faculties in debate, but to get shocked and offended in the face of diverging opinions.

Despite “expertise” in class warfare and degrees in areas like gender and ethnic studies, this generation is not getting what it thinks it is “entitled” to. This generation is not taught to be objective and self critical, lest it be too hard on itself! So if these young people are not getting what they think they deserve. Then, it has to be the system’s fault.

Universities and institutions of higher learning that once heralded the age of enlightenment and brought forth the marvelous innovations of the industrial revolution are turning into Leftwing Seminaries geared to produce committed leftists — to paraphrase the American social commentator Dennis Prager.

The Leftwing narrative is running unopposed on our campuses with no opposing narrative to counter it. Today, nothing less than the very soul of the Western civilization is at stake and we just might be letting the other side win by default.

Why we are all in peril if the practitioners of Jew-hatred succeed.

Reprinted from TheCommentator.com.

The Italian philosopher and politician Niccolò Machiavelli famously said: “Never attempt to win by force what can be won by deception”. After decades of aggression failed to destroy Israel, deception is the “new” game in town.

This deception has a name, or to be precise, a lame sounding acronym — BDS, the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel.

The BDS campaign has two main ingredients — one is deception and the other is another kind of lie. There’s the sinister deception about the campaign’s own true nature, and a blatant lie about the state of Israel.

The otherwise vocal BDS campaign remains eerily silent about its ties and sympathies with terrorist groups such as Hamas, Hezbollah and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad. The campaign lures in faith-based Christian groups, and LBGT community and feminist groups while at the same time hiding its ties with the homophobic and misogynist clerical regime of Iran.

Yes, indeed. The BDS campaign calls for an academic and cultural boycott of Israel, while doing the bidding of its masters in Tehran who offer bounties on the heads of writers abroad and hang poets for penning dissenting verses at home.

The BDS campaign targets and maligns Israel, the only functioning democracy and liberal-minded multi-ethnic society in the Middle East — a country that doesn’t discriminate negatively against its citizens on the basis of gender, sexual orientation or faith; and where every citizen has access to an impartial judiciary for redressing grievances regardless of faith or ethnicity.

The terrible beauty of the BDS campaign is that it does not have to bind itself to facts. This fact-free campaign is all about emotions. The campaign scouts interest groups, communities and campuses for “grievances”. Their game plan is to whip up emotions, ratchet up the hate, and present the mob with a target, namely Israel.

The fact that their issues and grievances have nothing to do with Israel doesn’t really bother BDS campaigners.

There is something for everyone. An all-inclusive package to fight “evil corporations”, “apartheid”, “racism”, “militarism”, “gender oppression” — or any other perceived discriminations. On university campuses all across Europe and North America, the BDS’s message is simple: “If you have a grievance worth getting mad about, we have just the right punching bag for you.”

The BDS campaign camouflages itself as the reincarnation of the Résistance, the Civil-Rights Movement or the Gandhian Civil-Disobedience movement in our times. The fact that it has nothing to do with the reality of Israel isn’t allowed to dampen the mood at this anti-Israel slugfest.

On the other hand, those in the western liberal academia and self-proclaimed “civil society” also have no big qualms about hopping on a bandwagon driven by Hamas or Hezbollah.

The question worth asking would be; what drives elements like Hamas and Hezbollah to hate Israel. It is not about the “settlements”, the “refugees” and the “occupation”. It is about the very existence of Israel; the existence of a free, humane and enlightened society in a neighborhood of bigotry, despotism and tyranny.

The contempt and hatred of Israel is in fact contempt and hatred of Western Democracy and Civilization. The radical Left in the West hates the values signified by Israel just as much as the religious supremacists in the Arab world do. It is a match made in hell in which the BDS campaign plays cupid bringing these sadists and masochists together to form an unholy alliance.

It would be hilarious, if it wasn’t so tragic. The BDS campaign uses the avenues and free spaces provided by the liberal and open societies to hit at the very core of values that built them in the first place. It uses University campuses, faculty unions and student bodies to divide and polarize. It targets trade unions, local communities and churches to spread the mean-spirited gospel of BDS.

The BDS campaign will never achieve its intended goal of “bringing Israel to its knees”. However, it is bound to have unintended consequences.

The practitioners of BDS are bent upon disrupting the free flow of knowledge, academic discourse and civilizational advancement in the Western World. They must not be allowed to do so, for we are all in peril if they are.

Last week saw India’s envoy to the US air discontent over imminent moves by US Lawmakers to tighten visa regulations on high-tech firms as part of a larger immigration reform. This move would restrict the ability of US based Indian IT firms to source their employees from India.

It is interesting to note that the uncanny and resigned tone of the envoy’s statement has come to define US-India relations in recent years. Once seen as blooming and dynamic, this relationship is now showing signs of deep trouble.

Those working in the US State Department and New Delhi’s South Block on “diplomatic solutions” to these increasingly frequent impasses might not succeed in the long run. For these are mere symptoms of a greater malady.

The reason for this deteriorating relationship is two-fold. The first directly arises from President Obama’s new foreign policy approach. He promised voters in 2008 that as President he would talk to enemies and this is a promise he really has delivered on.

It is a laudable approach to “positively engage” enemies, provided we live in an ideal world where good deeds are reciprocated. But the extended hand of friendship by the US has been seen by adversaries as a sign of weakness; encouraging despots like Assad to play “Russian roulette” with his chemical weapon stockpile, Iran to carry on Uranium enrichment and China to employ strong-arm tactics on Japan.

It has another unintended effect as well. This approach incentivizes bad behavior by enemies and at times penalizes loyal allies. The concessions made to adversaries have come too often at the cost of loyal friends. India has been quick to notice that in the region and has made no secret of her discontent.

The second aspect of this problem might be related to the first one, but has a “values” dimension to it. The current US administration does not seek to be the moral leader of the world. “American Exceptionalism” is not a guiding principle of foreign policy.

The US seeks to reduce its geo-political footprint and assume a more “equitable role” in the world. Another altruistic position, one might think, but it has an impact on India beyond the framework of disengagement politics undertaken by the current administration.

To put it candidly, India’s political leadership did not embrace free market capitalism as a result of an acquired conviction, but it was forced upon them after a balance-of-payments crisis in 1991. The initially painful steps imposed on India paved the way for her growth story. The US at that point played the role of a catalyst nudging India to overcome her initial hesitations and embrace free market capitalism.

India’s economic growth and her foreign policy tilt towards the U.S. have occurred simultaneously and that is by no means a coincidence. India’s initial ascent on the world economic stage was a direct result of her embracing quintessentially American values.

By curbing government control on private enterprise, cutting taxes, and reducing the size of the government bureaucracy through privatization, India unleashed the entrepreneurship of her hard working and ingenious people.

If one was to summarize India’s success in one word, it would be “incentives”. For the first time in the history of modern India millions of families had a real chance of lifting themselves from poverty, not through government programs, but as a direct result of economic growth and private enterprise.

Economic mobility dented the rigid and inhumane Cast System. Indian women broke new ground and were empowered by their increased participation at all levels of the economy.

However, the last decade saw India falter on this path. Rather than pushing ahead with economic liberalization and focusing on growth, the government is again resorting to the remedy of “social programs”.

The US that India had been dealing from the early 90s was assured of the superiority of its values and willing to inspire others to follow her. But with the present US administration focusing on reducing America’s ‘footprint’ and reluctant to even assert the correctness of its values, let alone defend them, India has lost a vital pillar of support.

That said, India does not seem to have any good option but to push through with her economic reforms and re-embark on her long walk to prosperity. India has a billion reasons to do so.

The coming general elections this summer could be a defining moment for India’s economic future. India has a chance to overcome current political indecisiveness and get back to the path of much needed economic growth by modernizing governance and liberalizing the economy.

However, if India does falter it will have dire consequence for the world’s largest democracy, and the U.S will surely come to see that as a cause for profound regret.

The "quenelle" gesture popularized by French "performance artist" Dieudonné says something about Jew-Hate in Europe.

Reprinted from TheCommentator.com.

The case of French footballer Nicolas Anelka, his “celebratory” quenelle gesture and his subsequent curious defense has once again raised allegations and concerns over the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe.

The quenelle gesture which has been described by some as an inverted Nazi-style salute, has been popularized by the French comedian Dieudonné. Monsieur Dieudonné and his fans defend quenelle as an “anti-establishment” gesture and maintain that it has nothing to do with anti-Semitism.

The fact that Monsieur Dieudonné has been convicted seven times for his anti-Semitic utterances and may well be on the way to his eighth trial, this time for implying that a Jewish journalist belongs in a gas chamber, hasn’t deterred his supporters from keeping on making that claim.

Monsieur Dieudonné who considers himself as a performance artist does not draw his fan-base from the French Far-Right, but from the mainstream of French society, mainly educated, urban youth.

In the age of Social Media the quenelle gesture has gone viral throughout Europe with people sharing their photographs of joyfully giving quenelle salutes and occasionally with very disturbing backdrops, like the Auschwitz death camp, the Holocaust Memorial in Berlin, the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam or the Jewish school in Toulouse where a massacre took place in 2012.

The French Striker Nicolas Anelka has been quick to plead ignorance to the wider implications of his highly public gesture, so did NBA Star Tony Parker before him and other major or minor celebrities like him in the past.

The incident wIll hardly affect Mr. Anelka’s football career and most probably he will be let off with a proverbial slap on the wrist. Considering the nature of Social Media this infamous gesture too may fade away as just another seasonal fad.

However, a question would still remain unanswered. Can one assume that anti-Semitism (or the term M. Dieudonné and his friends hide behind – “anti-Zionism”) is once again socially acceptable in Europe?

Is there a ready and receptive audience? Or better yet, does it pay to play with anti-Semitic symbolism in Europe today?

Going by Monsieur Dieudonné’s example, it most certainly does. His wife has capitalized on the market potential and registered quenelle as a trademark and he has now rolled out his own range of Quenelle-merchandise.

What Monsieur Dieudonné is doing, is by no mean new to Europe. He is playing with the age old clichés, conspiracy theories and selling a repackaged brand of anti-Semitism.

What we have not seen in recent times is the level of acceptance for such ideas. His fans would not consider themselves as being anti-Semitic or even Far-Right for that matter.

They are often well educated and otherwise liberal. But in these times of economic stagnation they are discontented. Despite their college degrees they are not getting what they think they are entitled to.

It would be preposterous for them to even to think that it could to some extent be their fault. Well, then it certainly has to be a racket. If they are not getting what they think they deserve, then someone must have rigged the tables. “Performance artists” like Dieudonné are more than willing to fill such “intellectual gaps” with their conspiracy theories.

These are not a band of seduced, misguided or misled youth. You have to be really mean-spirited to perform or defend the act of raising an unmistakably anti-Semitic gesture in the Anne Frank House or the Holocaust memorial in Berlin, and still have the audacity to point fingers at others for their transgressions.

Despite being a recent immigrant to Europe, I have lived here long enough to know that people I am referring to have no idea of their own history, have no idea of the complexities of international politics, and, most surprisingly, have never even met a single Jew in their life.

Whenever I have directly confronted and disapproved of such acts and utterances, I have repeatedly been asked a question (and often by righteously indignant perpetrators themselves); why does “their” anti-Semitism bother “me”?

It does bother me. As an immigrant who has made a conscious choice of calling Europe my home, it bothers me even more than it should bother them.

Immigrants like me have come to the West in search of a haven, where they can pursue their dreams without fear and realize our potential without restrictions.

Anti-Semitism stands at the very core of the idea and the ideology that threaten the values that have made Europe and the West great. We do not need to dig deep into European history to know that whenever anti-Semitism rears its head, Europe has been plunged into darkness and destruction.

It is therefore imperative for us all in Europe to realize that resurging anti-Semitism is not merely a problem or matter of concern to the Jewish communities, but to the rest of freedom loving Europeans as well.
