We are pleased to announce the appearance of a new blog edited by Frontpage Shillman Fellow Daniel Greenfield. Daniel is one of the brightest stars in the conservative blogosphere and webverse. His Freedom Center pamphlets Muslim Hate Groups on Campus and The Great Betrayal: Obamas Wars and the War in Iraq are essential reading for anyone concerned about our country and its future. His columns for Frontpage are on the cutting edge of conservative thought and stellar examples of conservative polemic. I am very excited that Daniel has taken on this task for Frontpage and look forward to what he will produce in The Point. Following this announcement I am terminating my own blog. In the future anything I have to say in blog form will appear under Daniel’s editorship in The Point.

I began as a skeptic of the selection of Paul Ryan as Romney’s VP

I began as a skeptic of the selection of Paul Ryan as Romney’s VP. I did so not because I didn’t think the world of Paul Ryan – I do – but because I was afraid the Ryan plan would provide a juicy target for a campaign run by Democratic gangsters who have already accused the Republican candidate – as decent a human being as you will find in politics — of murder.

But listening to candidate Ryan over the last few days and watching his impact on Romney himself and on the presidential campaign – its new vigor in going on the attack and its effectiveness in dispelling the opposition’s lies, I have come around to agreeing that this was a terrific choice. Ryan is articulate, aggressive and on top of the facts – loaded for Democratic bear. Opposing Medicare – which Obama has plundered — to Obamacare, which a majority of voters already dislike, is a brilliant strategy that can neutralize the unprincipled attacks and the calculated distortions of the conman in the White House and his ethically challenged thugs. Most importantly, with Ryan on board the Romney team has gone on the attack. If they continue this way through the rest of the campaign we might save our country after all.

The International Olympic Committee has refused to memorialize the murder of Israeli athletes

The International Olympic Committee has refused to memorialize the murder of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. The reason isn’t hard to guess. The images of discord, where athletes from muslim countries either leave the field, or where officials from Islamic nations bluster at the inappropriateness of such a tribute, would be shameful and disgusting to sane people around the world. Such evil and inhumanity is best kept under wraps if you want to pretend it doesn’t exist.

In some parts of the world, murder remains as fashionable as it was in parts of Germany in 1943.

Enter one gold medal winning American gymnast – Aly Raisman.

Her floor routine was accompanied by the folk song “Hava Nagila.” She said the choice wasn’t intentional, but was quick to add, “the fact it was on the 40th anniversary [of the Munich murders] is special, and winning the gold today means a lot to me. If there had been a moment’s silence, I would have supported it and respected it.”

Watch the video of her routine here.

C.S. Lewis wrote about the ongoing battle between lightness and dark, and that everyone is a participant whether they know it or not. Courageous acts by individual people are necessary to keep the dark at bay, whether a Marine in a desolate Mideast hell, or a gymnast with the courage to say what needs to be said, even if the IOC doesn’t.

Originally published by Fran Spielman from City Hall Reporter

Jul 26, 2012

Ignoring Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan’s history of anti-Semitic remarks, Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Wednesday welcomed the army of men dispatched to the streets by Farrakhan to stop the violence in Chicago neighborhoods.

Ald. Debra Silverstein (50th), an Orthodox Jew, has said it’s good that Farrakhan is “helping” in the fight against crime, “but it doesn’t eradicate the comments that he’s made about the Jewish community.”

Emanuel offered no such caveat. Although Farrakhan has a history of making anti-Semitic statements, Chicago’s first Jewish mayor has no interest in revisiting that controversy.

He’s more concerned about reducing a 40 percent surge in Chicago homicides that’s become a media obsession and threatens to undermine his efforts to market Chicago to international tourists.

“People of faith have a role to play and community leaders have a role to play in helping to protect our neighborhoods and our citizens. You cannot get there on just one piece of an anti-crime strategy,” the mayor said.

“The police have a role to play. Tearing down abandoned buildings has a role to play. Shutting liquor stores that are a cancer in the community have a role to play. Community leaders have a role to play. Pastors have a role to play. Principals have a role to play. And most importantly, parents have roles to play. They have decided, the Nation of Islam, to help protect the community. And that’s an important ingredient, like all the other aspects of protecting a neighborhood.”

For the last two Mondays, black men in dress suits and bow ties fanned out across violence-plagued Chicago neighborhoods — first Auburn-Gresham, then South Shore — to form a human wall of protection against any sudden outbreak of gunfire.

The army of men, know as the Fruit of Islam, were led by Farrakhan, who ordered the show of force in response to last month’s brutal murder of seven-year-old Heaven Sutton.

Emanuel’s decision to steer clear of Farrakhan’s history of anti-Semitic remarks is a far cry from the 1994 controversy that followed former Mayor Richard M. Daley’s private meeting withFarrkakhan.

During the meeting, Daley prodded Farrakhan to work out his differences with Jewish leaders in talks arranged by the Commission on Human Relations. Daley even hinted that if those conversations did not take place, the Nation of Islam would have trouble winning the city approval needed for its planned development along the 79th Street commercial strip.

Jewish leaders refused to engage in the dialogue. They were so concerned about the mayor’s private meeting with Farrakhan they demanded an audience of their own to clear the air. Daley used that meeting to deny ever suggesting the give-and-take.

“There’s been a rather longstanding pattern where Minister Farrakhan has talked about wanting dialogue. There have even been a couple of instances where members of the Jewish community have met with him,” Michael Kotzin, director of the Jewish Community Relations Council, said at the time.

“Invariably, he’s been unchanged after that. They have felt betrayed by things he said to them. Been there. Don’t want to be there again and be put in that kind of box. All that happens is that he gains from those kinds of meetings a kind of credibility, legitimacy and stature. That’s all that would come of it.”

An influential voice in a generation of leftists who did an enormous disservice to this country and the world at large.

Alex Cockburn is dead of cancer at the age of 71. Alex was an influential voice in a generation of leftists who did an enormous disservice to this country and the world at large by carrying on a political tradition and promoting a political cause that killed 100 million people in the 20th Century – in peacetime – and consigned more than a billion others to immeasurable and unnecessary poverty, even starvation, by imposing on them the crackpot socialist schemes of Karl Marx and his misguided disciples. Alex’s father Claud was also a noted writer and both an agent of and propagandist for Stalin’s bloody regime. Alex exhibited in his own person many of the worst Stalinist traits. He was personally vicious in attacking political opponents and even friends, such as Christopher Hitchens, about whom he wrote one of the most disgusting columns I have ever read – although in fairness it must be said that Christopher himself was a master of this particular form of literary abuse.

On the other hand, Alex had worthy sense of humor, which even a target like myself could appreciate, and was a clever writer though inferior as a stylist to Christopher whom he obviously envied and paid back with insults. It could be said of Alex that he was also a gutsy individual who, like Christopher, on occasion displayed independence of mind – a rarity among leftists who are normally incapable of challenging the progressive herd. Alex’s most notorious deviation from orthodoxy was his refusal to support the idea that human beings are responsible for climate change, a cardinal tenet of the progressive faith. This caused the obituary writer for the Los Angeles Times,[1] which like most of our metropolitan papers has become a left-wing tabloid, to say of him “his thoughts on global warming aligned him with the far right” – as though matters of science should be subject to a political party line.

Needless to say, the Times obit failed to mention the fact that Alex and his father were shills for Communists, or that Alex was anti-American and an anti-Semite and a cheerleader for the Islamo-fascists of Hizbollah, Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood who are bent on destroying us. Despite the unfortunate resurgence in our time of the vile ideologies of the 1930s and 1960s to which he devoted his life, Alex was at the end a bitter and spiteful man. This was the predictable fruit of a life spent badly in recrimination and anger.

Senator John McCain thinks it's "sinister" to question

[Today’s blog is also posted at the HorowitzFreedomCenter’s Facebook Page where I will be commenting regularly from now on.]

Senator John McCain thinks it’s “sinister” to question the political attitudes and influence of Huma Abedin, the Secretary of State’s close adviser even though Abedin’s mother and father are (or were — her father is deceased) figures in the Jew and Christian-hating Muslim Brotherhood, spawner of al-Qaeda, parent of Hamas – an organization dedicated in its own words to “destroying the American civilization.” If Abedin’s mother and father were influential figures in the Ku Klux Klan or the Nazi Party during the Thirties would McCain have the same attitude. It’s disgraceful that that there are still influential Republicans who are clueless when it comes to the internal threat to this country posed by the Muslim Brotherhood, its front groups and its allies in the White House and the Democratic Party. It is also dangerous.

What has caused more long term destruction - the A-bomb, or Government welfare programs created to buy the votes of those who want someone to take care of them?

Japan does not have a welfare system. Work for it or do without.

These are possibly the 5 best sentences you’ll ever read and all applicable to this experiment:

1. You cannot legislate the poor into prosperity by legislating the wealthy out of prosperity.

2. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving.

3. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else.

4. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it!

5. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that is the beginning of the end of any nation.

Politically speaking there couldn’t have been a better Supreme Court decision

Politically speaking there couldn’t have been a better Supreme Court decision. If Obamacare had been declared unconstitutional, the Democrats’ campaign in November would have been those horrible Republicans have politicized the Supreme Court and denied affordable healthcare to everyone. The focus would be on the court’s “unfairness.” The Democrats would have a plausible if unfair case (and in politics lack of fairness is a given). Advantage Democrats. Advantage because the last things they want to talk about are Obamacare and taxes. And that’s the second big plus from this decision. The focus – thanks to Justice Roberts – is going to be on the biggest tax increase in human history on everyone, not just the rich. And on the lies of Obama which dwarf those of Clinton. Obama promised no tax hikes on the middle class and then defended Obamacare before the Supreme Court as …. a tax.

As for the constitutionalists. Roberts’ argument makes sense to me. Yes the power to tax is the power to destroy, but it’s in the Constitution. So this decision doesn’t really change anything constitutionally. If you don’t like Obamacare, the remedy is to repeal it. Let the elections begin.

Poor David Maraniss

Editors note: This article was originally published at PJ Media by Ron Radosh

Poor David Maraniss. The best-selling biographer of the just published Barack Obama: The Story is not only crying all the way to the bank, but shedding crocodile tears that his new biography is giving the Right ammunition against the President. Yesterday Maraniss told CNN’s Soledad O’Brien the following on “Starting Point:”

I’m not writing it as a fact checker. I’m writing it as an historian. Other people for ideological reasons are pouncing on that part of what my book is, but in fact I’m trying to tell the truth.
A memoir is far different from rigorous factual biography. It’s not as though I’m trying to say, aha, I got you, at each point, I’m just trying to present the way I really found it, which in many cases was different from what he presented.

Let me pause to parse the above paragraph from the distinguished journalist and historian . So here is my translation of what Maraniss is really saying:

My book has been taken up by Obama’s enemies just because I told the truth. Give the President a break. He was writing a memoir, and everyone knows a memoir is different from the truth, since Obama is the first post-modern President. His memoir was his truth, even though it wasn’t true, it was to him. I didn’t mean to show he lied—pardon me,—unintentionally fabricated his own story. I only sought to show the truth was different than he said it was.

Get it now? If you don’t, Maraniss also said on the program that Obama sought to write it through the “prism of race.” He went on to note that the “Right-wing” is “cherry-picking” negative things in the book, which “is almost why I didn’t want to write it.” As he went on, he got deeper into the problem: “He wrote it when he wasn’t running for President, and had no thought that people like me would come along and tell the real story.”

So what is the real story? Fortunately, Buzzfeed.com has given us a good summary. The Maranis bio, author Ben Smith tells us, “is the first sustained challenge to Obama’s control over his own story, a firm and occasionally brutal debunking of Obama’s bestselling 1995 memoir, Dreams from My Father. And this is important because, I and so many others can tell you about how many people voted for and supported Obama for President precisely because of what he related in his own memoir.

As Smith writes, that story had a firm “narrative goal,” one based on a story of race and identity in the 20th Century. The falsehoods in Obama’s memoir include his mother’s claim that she experienced racism in Kansas, stories about the colonial brutality suffered by his grandfather in Kenya and by his Indonesian step-grandfather. It contains, to quote Maraniss, to paint Obama as “blacker and more disaffected” than he was in real life, and hence Obama “accentuates characters drawn from black acquaintances who played lesser roles in his real life but could be used to advance a line of thought, while leaving out or distorting the actions of friends who happen to be white.”

Having written these lines, Maraniss suddenly has seen the devastating impact they could have in souring people on the President’s truthfulness. Since he is himself a good liberal and supporter of the President, David Maraniss is in effect apologizing for the truthfulness of his own account. Smith continues:

Maraniss finds that Obama’s young life was basically conventional, his personal struggles prosaic and later exaggerated. He finds that race, central to Obama’s later thought and included in the subtitle of his memoir, wasn’t a central factor in his Hawaii youth or the existential struggles of his young adulthood. And he concludes that attempts, which Obama encouraged in his memoir, to view him through the prism of race “can lead to a misinterpretation” of the sense of “outsiderness” that Maraniss puts at the core of Obama’s identity and ambition.

The problem that Maraniss acknowledges is that Obama’s composites and rearrangements are not only that of style, but “are also substantive.” Hence he seems Dreams as a work of “literature and memoir, not history and autobiography.” The key example is the woman named “Regina” who Obama treats as a symbol of an authentic African-American experience that Obama wanted for himself, and that he found in the woman he eventually married. But Maraniss found out that Regina was an Occidental College student leader who was white, and not African-American! Her real name was Caroline Boss, and Regina was the name of her Swiss grandmother.

Other fabrications found by Maraniss include that Hussein Onyango, his paternal grandfather, was not whipped and tortured by the British. Nor was his Indonesian stepfather killed by Dutch soldiers in the fight for independence. Maraniss calls it a “concocted myth in almost all respects.” The truth was far more simple and hardly one to call up reverence: He “fell off a chair at his home with trying to hang drapes, presumably suffering a heart attack.”

One must also note that these truths offset some of the mythologizing carried out by Dinesh D’Souza, whose book The Roots of Obama’s Rage is based on accepting what Maraniss has now exposed as false. As Smith writes, “Obama’s conservative critics [have]taken the self-portrait at face value, and sought to deepen it to portray him as a leftist and a foreigner.” Certainly, while Obama was a leftist, I think Smith is correct when he says that Obama did not have a “foreign and strongly Muslim heritage.” Nor did he have “roots in the 20th Century’s self-consciously leftist anti-colonial struggle.”

Finally, Maraniss shows that Obama’s father, Barack Obama Sr., “sheds whatever sympathy his intelligence and squandered promise should carry.” He was a domestic abuser who beat his wives, one of whom got a sexually-transmitted disease from an extramarital relationship he had. Nor was Obama’s mother and he abandoned by the father when they were in Hawaii in 1963. Maraniss writes that his mother left Hawaii first one year earlier than Barack Sr., and most like did so because of spousal abuse.

Obama’s own friend “Ray,” discussed in the President’s memoir, was not as Obama wrote “a symbol of young blackness,” but was a man half Japanese, half native American, and part black,” like Obama himself. Nor was he Obama’s close friend. And they had no trouble dating white girls, unlike the claim made by Obama in his memoir. As one friend told Maraniss, Everything didn’t revolve around race.”

None of these fables- “People make up stories,”- one distant relative told Maraniss, -for what Jonathan S. Tobin calls “a pattern of falsehoods and distortions about his past that has been one of the hallmarks of the president’s public career.” None is more telling than “the oft-told story of [Obama’s mother’s] dying because of the failure of her health insurance company to pay for her cancer treatment [which] was a flat out lie.” Ann Dunham’s cancer treatments were in fact paid by insurance, although she had a separate and unrelated conflict about disability coverage. During the 2008 campaign Obama said the following:

For my mother to die of cancer at the age of 53 and have to spend the last months of her life in the hospital room arguing with insurance companies because they’re saying that this may be a pre-existing condition and they don’t have to pay her treatment, there’s something fundamentally wrong about that.

Obama, Tobin notes, knew this to be false, since he handled her insurance matters with the company. Yet he and the campaign regularly referred to this falsehood even though a buried story in The New York Times by Janny Scott revealed the truth. It was also repeated in a film about Obama narrated by Tom Hanks. Tobin writes that “Not only has the president never apologized for lying to the American people about his mother’s plight, he rightly assumed that even though the truth was uncovered by the New York Times, neither that paper nor the rest of the mainstream media would follow up on it as they undoubtedly would had a Republican ever tried to sell the voters such a transparent whopper.”

So the question remains, as more we didn’t know about Barack Obama comes out, what difference if any will it make in causing voters to reevaluate what they know about the President and his record of fabrications, even concerning his own life, and uttered to score a political point about the need for universal health care?

Now that David Maraniss has reluctantly opened the door, will the press and other investigators do their best to carry out the kind of vetting about Barack Obama that did not take place in 2008? Let us hope that Maraniss’s work is only the beginning.

Last week, Israel transferred the bodies of 91 terrorists including numerous suicide bombers to the Palestinian Authority. A PA TV program for youth, Speak Up, glorified the 91 terrorists saying they were:

“More honored than all of us… They are the greatest role models for us.”

The TV program is co-produced by PA TV and PYALARA, an NGO for youth funded by the EU, Save the Children and other international donors.

The following is the statement on PA TV honoring the terrorists:

“Unfortunately, we couldn’t part from them (i.e., the terrorists) or even embrace them, but were satisfied standing before their bodies, standing up before their sanctified message: The homeland won’t die, but we will die for it. These [Martyrs] are more honored than all of us… They are the greatest role models for us, not only because they fought and struggled for the homeland, but also because they went beyond the sacrifice [of] strain and effort, to the stage where they actually sacrificed their lives for the homeland.”

Palestinian Media Watch reported that the PA leadership participated in a national funeral treating these 91 terrorists as heroes and Islamic Martyrs. At the funeral, suicide bombers and other terrorists were presented as role models for others to “follow in their path“:This is the second time in a few weeks that EU-funded PYALARA has chosen to glorify terrorists. In May, PYALARA, on its other PA TV program Jerusalem Scenes, honored Palestinian terrorist prisoners serving multiple life sentences for planning suicide bombings that murdered many Israelis. The TV crew visited the homes and interviewed family members of three terrorists of the “Silwan cell,” which was responsible for terror attacks in 2002, including:

The TV host telling youth to view terrorists and suicide bombers as “role models” corresponds with PYALARA’s agenda, as its website states that creating “role models” is one of the important purposes of its TV program:

Hi Philadelphia it’s Glenn Beck and I want to invite you to join me for a very special luncheon. It’s this Thursday, May 31st at the Union League downtown. I’m gonna be there I’m gonna be speaking to support David Horowitz and the Philly Freedom Center. I have to tell ya, in this age of moral and economic decline David and his team at the Philadelphia Freedom Center need help to continue their mission of restoring the values and traditions that make this country great. David used to be a Marxist man, there’s nobody that knows these guys more than David Horowitz. He knows what they’re doing, he knows what they have done, he knows where they’re going and he knows more importantly how to stop them. He has helped me and advised me for several years now kind of behind the scenes and really never asked for anything. I want to be in Philadelphia to support him. This is important work. David’s work must go forward for our nation to go forward. Please, visit PhillyFreedom.org that’s PhillyFreedom.org and I’ll see you there Thursday.

Today at FrontPage, Shillman Journalism Fellow Bruce Bawer has an excellent piece on an undercover investigation exposing the disturbing ideology preached in Swedish mosques. As Bawer points out, in 2007, Britain’s Channel 4 aired an even more shocking exposé on mosques in the United Kingdom. The program, which is presented below, shows British Muslims promoting violence, rejection of Western law, inferiority of women, hatred of gays and British society and the acceptability of marrying female children.

A rejoinder to the Tablet caricature.

Last week an article appeared in the Jewish magazine Tablet, in which I am portrayed as politically “homeless” and depressed, while the David Horowitz Freedom Center is described as long past its “heyday.” The article further alleges that I have come to a point in my life where I feel my efforts as a conservative have been “a waste.” All of these are false allegations made by a writer who is a political leftist, tone deaf and hostile to conservative ideas. As it happens, within the past year I published a book called, A Point in Time, which is a summary of my views on life and the battles I have waged and which is also the strongest possible affirmation of the philosophy that underlies my conservative worldview. Far from being abandoned by other conservatives, moreover, I have received the strongest possible endorsement from the reviewers of this book.

The David Horowitz Freedom Center is supported by 100,000 individual donors, which is more than three times the number of its supporters ten years ago. Conservatives who have spoken at events the Center has hosted include four of the contenders for this year’s Republican presidential nomination (Santorum, Gingrich, Bachmann and Cain) former president George Bush, his Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld, his Attorney General John Ashcroft, Senator Marco Rubio, and his colleagues, John McCain, Jon Kyl, Jeff Sessions and others, Speaker John Boehner, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, and Victor Davis Hanson. A recent pamphlet I wrote called Barack Obama’s Rules for Revolution has sold half a million copies and has been distributed to another two million. Contrary to the Tablet’s description of the Center as a declining institution it has doubled its revenues in the last ten years and its influence in the conservative movement through its websites Frontpagemag.com and DiscovertheNetworks.org is greater than ever.

I obviously made a serious mistake in judgment, in agreeing to be interviewed by someone who misrepresented what I told him and ignored the evidence that contradicted his distortions. For being so unguarded, I owe an apology to my friends and supporters, several of whom expressed their dismay to me after reading the article. It is partly their concern that has prompted me to set the record straight. But, in a perverse way, I am also appreciative of the opportunity provided by the author of this tedious and hostile piece of writing because he has caused me to look at how embedded in the conservative movement I and my colleagues at the David Horowitz Freedom Center are, and how deeply we are indebted to it as well.

When I received the Tablet request for an interview, I was inclined to say yes because it came from a magazine with which I had a history, and which did occasionally published first-rate conservative writers such as Bret Stephens and Lee Smith. They even published a defense of Nonie Darwish that I submitted when she was attacked by one of their writers. I was also disarmed by the author himself who sent me an email about his intentions:

I am a leftist, though not a dogmatic one, and I usually don’t write directly about politics. For The Nation, I write mostly for the Books and Arts section, which isn’t nearly as ideologically-driven as the magazine’s editorial page…. So, we may not find much common ground politically, but that may make for a more stimulating piece. I’m less interested in debating Islamo-fascism than exploring your work’s position at the intersection of autobiography, politics, history, manners, and polemic. I think I can do so fairly.

In the past, my work has been attacked by leftists who will take a phrase from a fund-raising letter, or a heated polemic and omit its context or distort its meaning to discredit my work. The prospect of a leftist writer distinguishing the intellectual from the polemical in my work looked to me like an opportunity to break through the censorship that leftists had imposed on it.

I could not have been more mistaken. When the article “David Horowitz Is Homeless” appeared, it was apparent that none of its author’s assurances — interested in the intersection of styles of thought, not interested in scoring political points, will do it fairly — were sincere. Here is an illustrative example: “If what was once labeled extremism is now mainstream GOP boilerplate,” the author wrote, “then Horowitz deserves at least some of the credit.”

Not only was this a political attack, it was wildly inaccurate in both of its claims. The Republican Party today finds itself defending policies that were once the province of liberal Democrats like John F. Kennedy, specifically capital gains tax cuts, balanced budgets, strong defense budgets, color-blind racial standards and aggressive anti-totalitarian foreign policies. Only an extremist of the left could so mis-label a party that just nominated a former Massachusetts governor as its presidential candidate.

But the author isn’t done. He also wants to pin Republican “extremism” on me – the man whom conservatives have allegedly abandoned:

In a widely distributed 2000 pamphlet called The Art of Political War, praised by Karl Rove and endorsed by 35 state Republican party chairmen, Horowitz wrote: “In political warfare you do not fight just to prevail in an argument, but to destroy the enemy’s fighting ability. Republicans often seem to regard political combats as they would a debate with the Oxford Political Union, as though winning depended on rational arguments and carefully articulated principles. But the audience of politics is not made up of Oxford dons, and the rules are entirely different. … Politics is war. Don’t forget it.” If you can remember a time when conservative discourse sounded like an Oxford lecture hall, then you have a sense of how far Horowitz has helped to steer this ship off course.

The missing context in this presentation is that the little pamphlet I wrote twelve years ago argued that it is Democrats – not Republicans — who have transformed the political arena into a combat zone. The pamphlet then urged Republicans to stop behaving as though it wasn’t.

The kernel of truth in the description is that I did remark to the author that Republicans haven’t really heeded my advice. It is true that 35 state party chairman endorsed the pamphlet, but none of them acted on its recommendations. Republicans have come a long way since then – thanks in the main to the emergence of the Tea Party. But they still have a long way to go.

Tablet Magazine has posted an article about me which is inaccurate in its very essence. So that supporters of the Center and of mine won’t be misled by this article, I am posting here the letter I sent to the editors: The Tablet assigned the profile of me to a 24 year old Nation writer and credulous supporter of the Occupy Wall Street movement. Its text is as accurate a portrait of me as the caricature they chose to accompany it (I suspect even Ahmadinejad would get a more respectful treatment from the Tablet editors). I wasted my time with this young man, and am sorry I did. He read a lot of my work, appreciated some of it — in particular Radical Son — but hasn’t a clue as to what the conservative dimension of my life is about, and therefore who I am. I am not “homeless,” as the title and much of the article implies, or a cynical propagandist as he suggests. There is in fact precious little in this piece that accurately reflects what I think or even what I have said, that is because the writer has no respect for conservative ideas or thought generally. Aside from the ideas, among the obvious facts he could have checked but didn’t, my Center never occupied a “tony high-rise” let alone on the 12th floor, as the author claims — and never “in downtown L.A. My present staff is not three but fifteen (and my Center far from being in pathetic decline as he also suggests) has three times the budget it did in 2000 and about ten times the following or more (the Alinsky pamphlet I wrote has been read by 2.5 million people but you would never guess it from his description); there is no security guard in our present offices, the Olin Foundation no longer exists, I have 100,000 conservative financial supporters — not three foundations, and so forth. The Center’s pamphlets are only “lurid” to a far left kid who has absolutely no feel or respect for conservative ideas. And this is the main problem with the piece. A serious writer would have tried to understand the connection between the radical half of my life and work, and the conservative one. Instead the conservative Horowitz is merely a caricature, and while a caricature is built around recognizable features of individual it also distorts them beyond recognition. This is exactly what this caricature of text does so that it misrepresents what I think even when the words it quotes are correct. Liberal commentators have not “learned to tune [me] out” — for example. They never considered my work (something I foolishly hoped The Tablet would do). Instead they have snatched quotes from blogs I have written or — in the case of this article ads I have published — or titles of public events (like “Islamo-fascism Awareness Week) and used them to aggressively misrepresent what I have stood for and believed, much in the manner of the repulsive illustration which is attached to this text. I could go on but what’s the point? I don’t know of a single conservative magazine that would treat a comparable intellectual on the left as shabbily as the Tablet has treated me in this article.
