[](/sites/default/files/uploads/2015/01/ShowImage.ashx_.jpg)The New York-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL) postures as one of America’s largest Jewish organizations devoted to combating Anti-Semitism and bigotry. A noble mission – but one which must contain the caveat that the organization is a mouthpiece for liberal issues – rather than the voice of the Jewish community.
In the latest case in point, the ADL recently issued a press release where they claimed one of among the “Top 10 issues affecting Jews in 2014” was “Racial Bias in the Criminal Justice System.”
Their press release stated,
The shooting deaths of African-Americans at the hands of police officers – especially the cases of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri and Eric Garner on Staten Island, New York – resulted in an outpouring of protests and demonstrations. Some turned violent. Public safety requires trust and communication between law enforcement and the communities they are sworn to protect, especially when their jurisdiction includes communities comprised primarily of racial, religious and ethnic minorities. The Brown and Garner cases highlight a continuing challenge that must be addressed – bias and/or the perception of bias that can call into question the integrity of the American criminal justice system.
The release quoted ADL’s President, Abe Foxman:
These cases were potent reminders that we cannot afford to ignore the implicit bias and prejudice that still tarnish our society. We need a justice system that all Americans can trust, and the Jewish community can play an important role, joining with our political and community leaders, towards pursuing and ultimately achieving that goal.
No one denies the unfortunate deaths of Brown and Garner, but the ADL is wrong to imply that not all Americans can trust the justice system. This statement mimics liberal politicians who have created an anti-police atmosphere in recent months, including President Barack Obama, Attorney General Eric Holder and New York’s Mayor Bill de Blasio. New York’s former mayor, Rudy Giuliani, Bernie Kerik, the former chief of police, NY’s former governor, George Pataki, and others have commented that certain politicians and media outlets are wrongly tarnishing police officers with allegations of racism. The ADL continues on this track – and ignores the feelings of heroic police throughout this country who defend Americans of all races and religions.
Bizarrely, the ADL release also claimed that one of the most important issues facing Jews in 2014 was “a meaningful path toward immigration reform.”
Another divisive issue – and surely one which Jews, like all Americans, are very divided on.
A November 2014 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that 48% of Americans opposed Obama’s action to take executive action towards immigration reform. Notably, only 11 percent of Republicans supported this action – which the ADL cited as one of the most important facing Jews. That’s true – assuming those Jews are Democrats.
This press release on most important 2014 issues is a continuation of many years of ADL advocating liberal viewpoints, including their previous support for gay marriage and advocacy for gun control. The Anti-Defamation League is simply a liberal Jewish organization.
ADL’s left-of center advocacy will continue with Jonathan Greenblatt, who will commence in July 2015 as the organization’s new President, replacing the ADL’s long-serving President, Abe Foxman. A current White House staffer in one of the most anti-Israel administrations in history, Greenblatt is Special Assistant to the President and Director of the Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation in the Domestic Policy Council. Greenblatt’s area of expertise is “social domestic policy” (encompassing immigration reform and “racial bias in the criminal justice system.”)
The Anti-Defamation League has done a lot of good work through the years – yet, their divisive stances on social issues makes me wonder if they are merely the Jewish wing of the Democratic Party. Their press release headline should have read “Top 10 Issues That Liberal Jews Advocated for in 2014.”
