“This disappointing decision follows discussions with the authorities in Gaza who have insisted that no women should participate,” the UNRWA said.
The UNRWA was planning a marathon to raise money for the children of Gaza. Hamas liked the money part, but it didn't like the idea of women stepping out of the kitchen, taking off their burkas and hijabs and taking part in it.
“This disappointing decision follows discussions with the authorities in Gaza who have insisted that no women should participate,” the UNRWA said in a statement published on its website.
We regret to announce that the UNRWA Gaza Marathon, due to be held on 10 April 2013, has been cancelled following a decision by the authorities in Gaza not to allow women to participate.
Registered Marathon participants who still wish to come to Gaza are welcome; UNRWA is working on an alternative programme of events which will be forwarded to those interested as soon as possible.
That program of events had just better not involve women.
UNRWA is extremely grateful for the overwhelming public interest in the Marathon, and the depth of support for the children of Gaza.
The UNRWA may want to start looking into the situation with the women of Gaza... unless Hamas is opposed to that as well.
