Once you unleash extremists, it's really hard to put them back in the box. Once you start destroying statues, it won't end with General Lee. It won't end until there are no statues left.
What started with an attack on Confederate memorials escalated to proposals to remove statues of Washington. In Chicago, a leftist clerical activist wanted to remove a statue of George Washington.
On CNN, Angela Rye, CNN political commentator and former executive director of the Congressional Black Caucus, called for removing statues of Washington and Jefferson.
“George Washington was a slave owner, and we need to call slave owners out for what they are, whether we think they were protecting American freedom or not,” Rye said. “He wasn’t protecting my freedom. My ancestors weren’t deemed human beings to him.
“So to me, I don’t care if it’s a George Washington statue or a Thomas Jefferson statue or a Robert E. Lee statue. They all need to come down,” she said.
Then Vice called for blowing up Mount Rushmore.
Of course we're just getting started here. Al Sharpton joined in by going after the Jefferson Memorial. The Lincoln Memorial was vandalized. And a statue of Lincoln was set on fire in Chicago. (Why is it always Chicago?)
Protesters went after the statue of Teddy Roosevelt in front of the New York Museum of Natural History.
And we're just getting started.
Over in the UK, the local Black Lives Matter franchise, which is crazier than its US cousin, went after Gandhi, confusing most leftists who never learned enough actual history to know he was a racist.
In the heart of London, in Parliament Square stands a statue of Gandhi. Admired by some as a freedom fighter, he was a racist bigot, who often called black people "kaffir", the South African equivalent of the n-word. On the 2nd of October, in the spirit of those who oppose the Confederate statues in Charlottesville, BlackLivesMatter will protest with SOAS Antifa to demand his statue comes down.
BlackLivesMatter activist and SOAS Antifa chair Robbie Mombusi explains, "BLM stand with our brethren, the students and professors at the University of Ghana are demanding the removal of a statute of Mahatma Gandhi from their campus because of his "racist identity,' and calling for statutes of black heroes and heroines to be erected instead."
Gandhi was a jerk, but it's probably just that British racists are short on Confederate memorials to pull down. And besides the whole goal is to spread controversy. That will do it.
On to Seattle, which has a shortage of Confederate memorials, but does have the Fremont Lenin I recently wrote about. Seattle Mayor Ed Murray issued a call to remove the imported Lenin statue even though it's on private property. I'm all for not honoring murderous Communist dictators, but at this rate, I'm not sure that any statues will be left.
And, with plaques and a subway tile being torn down, we may not have anything left at all.
Virtually every famous person had their flaws. And if you plug in leftist politics, no one will ever be good enough.
99% of statues depicted people who didn't support gay marriage. Take them all down.
Every general by definition killed people. Every politician had a controversial position on something.
Back when we were a more reasoned society, we understood that we admired the virtues of leaders, rather than endlessly holding them accountable for every vice. We could look back at history and understand that not everyone might share our exact understanding of human rights (the average 16th century figure probably didn't) but that were part of a larger civilizational journey.
Now the cultural revolution demands that everything be constantly torn down and remade. And that leaves us with nothing.
