The word Apartheid is swiftly losing all meaning. First Iran claimed Nuclear Apartheid. Now there’s Tourism Apartheid. Will the Apartheids never cease?

A state-distributed leaflet advising Arab tourists to stop haggling over prices, dumping litter and wearing burkas has caused a storm of controversy among residents and public officials in the Austrian ski resort town of Zell am See.

The eight-page guide, titled “Where Cultures Meet,” produced by tourism officials, the police and the Austrian Arabic chamber of trade, includes a number of tidbits and advisories that address local concerns over road safety, littering, dress and behavior.

The pamphlet also advises that prices in Austria were not meant to be negotiated.

According to the Austrian Times, the most controversial debate over the pamphlet was the mention of the burka, with critics saying it would be seen as an attack on Islam. In the end, an advisory against wearing the traditional body cloak went in with an explanation that Austrian women dress as they wish, but typically choose to wear black as a sign of mourning; and that “people from the region are used to looking into the laughing face of others in order to gain a first impression and in order to build trust. With this in mind, locals would be glad when visitors adopted the Austrian mentality.”

Hotel owner Wilfred Holleis even went as far as to say it was a form of discrimination. “I see this as a kind of tourism apartheid,” he said according to the Austrian Times, adding that he had no problem with Arab tourists.

Tourism Apartheid. Is that a Third World problem or a First World problem? Or is it a problem when rich Third Worlders invade the First World, litter, waddle around in Burkas and attempt to bargain for everything.

And how do you ski in a Burka anyway? I don’t know, but if a US ski resort tries to interfere, Holder will come down on them like Karl Marx on a free croissant.

Considering the lengths that some European resort towns are going to in order to attract wealthy Saudi and Kuwaiti tourists, this is a refreshing move.

This is a fairly typical story about the intersection of non-Muslim broken families and aggressive Muslim missionary activity. Unfortunately American inner cities are ripe targets for the same treatment once there is a critical mass of Muslim settlers living in them.

The Muslim convert – who threatened a caretaker because he let tourists into a mosque with their heads uncovered – hails from a devoutly Christian family and started wearing the veil only as recently as 2012 after being radicalised by a ‘Muslim vigilante’.

Pictures taken six years ago show her as a carefree teenager enjoying listening to music and dancing with her relatives. But just a few years later, she shocked family members by turning up at the funeral of her grandmother Delcie Dawson wearing a burka.

Her great uncle, Gilbert Bell, said her Jamaican-born grandmother worked as a nurse at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and raised her family as strict Christians

Mr Bell’s wife Dorothy said: ‘I’m horrified and angry that a woman wants to put on an Islamic veil. That is like going backwards in women’s rights. I really can’t understand it at all.’

Brought up in a broken and violent household, Dawson had a chaotic childhood that may give an insight into her rejection of Western values.

Born in South London in 1991, the jobless Muslim fanatic is the fifth of six children. Her father, Christopher, 54, was released from prison last year after serving a five-year sentence for trying to smuggle £100,000 worth of cannabis into the UK from Ethiopia.

This week, Blackfriars Crown Court heard how Dawson had recruited her brother Matthias to help her frighten a caretaker at Finsbury Park Mosque in North London because he had let three Portuguese charity workers into the building on June 4 last year.

She confronted caretaker Daudi Yusuf, saying: ‘Why are you inviting naked women in the mosque?’

A fight broke out after her husband Royal Barnes, 23, intervened. Terrified, Mr Yusuf reported him to the police.

Two weeks later, Dawson returned to the mosque – where hate preacher Abu Hamza famously disseminated his poisonous beliefs – accompanied by her brother to challenge Mr Yusuf. She asked him: ‘Why did you tell the police my husband is threatening to kill you?’

This led to her trial for witness intimidation, during which she was allowed to wear her veil – to the fury of open justice campaigners.

Judge Peter Murphy insisted she remove her niqab to give her evidence.

Revealingly, the problem is religion, not race. Muslim converts are often nastier and more violent than those born Muslims because they are more religious.

Dawson attacked an actual Muslim who worked as a caretaker at a mosque because he didn’t live up to her standards. This also holds true for secularized Muslims like the Tsarnaevs who revert violently to their religion.

Radicalization is a misnomer. The proper term is religiosity. Dawson and the Tsarnaevs became religion. Many Muslims are either secular or passively religion, rather than actively religious.

Radicalization is really active religiosity as opposed to secularism or religious apathy.

Massacres, beheadings, rapes and the rest often take place whenever and wherever Islamic jihadis take over. Lesser known but no less eye-opening, however, is the aftermath of occupation—the everyday “rules” and laws the jihadis enforce once they’re in charge.

Consider the al-Qaeda-linked Islamic State of Iraq and Levant’s (ISIL) recent occupation of Raqqah, a city in northern Syria. First there was the overt violence. Among other things, the jihadi organization attacked two Christian churches—the Church of the Annunciation and the Church of Martyrs—broke their crosses, burned their Bibles, and raised the Islamic flag in triumph. One video depicts a Muslim “freedom fighter” smashing a Virgin Mary statue to shouts of Islam’s victory cry, “Allahu Akbar!”

Now consider the rules that organizations like ISIL enforce on the people living in the territories they occupy—or the inevitable “talibanization” of societies where Islamic supremacists hold sway. For example, a Syrian news clip recounts the following new laws ISIL promulgated in a statement it issued soon after taking over Raqqah:

• Women are banned from sitting on chairs.

• All women are obligated to wear Islamic attire, such as the niqab and burqa (which cover the entire body and face); sweaters, jeans, and makeup of any kind are strictly banned.

• Female clothing is not to be displayed in shop windows; only women are allowed to work in these shops; if a man is found on the grounds the shop faces closure.

• Women are banned from seeing male gynecologists.

• Smoking—cigarettes, water pipes, etc.—is banned. Violators could face the death penalty; shops found selling cigarettes will be burned.

• All barbershops are to be closed down and men forbidden from having short hair, wearing modern hairstyles or using hair products; men are also forbidden from wearing low-waist jeans.

• Anyone who uses the word “Daash” (an acronym for the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant in Arabic) will receive 70 whippings; the organization is to be referred to by its proper name.

The punishments are indeed severe: swindling taxi drivers face repercussions ranging from chopped hands to chopped heads; the reason cited is that their swindling may somehow interfere with a passenger’s worship (e.g., a Muslim seeking to go to mosque at the proper time). Likewise, shop owners who do not shut down during prayer times must face the consequences.

Thus while the Islamic jihad may lead to brief, spectacular forms of terror—massacres, beheadings, rapes, bombed churches—its aftermath and goal, purportedly the creation of a “perfect Islamic society,” is “spectacular” in its own way, especially for women, who become virtually invisible members of society.

Women with uncovered faces might give the little tykes all sorts of ideas. This isn’t happening in Afghanistan… but in Tunisia. The heartland of the Arab Spring.

A group of Salafites has issued death threats against teachers at an elementary school in Djerba, Tunisia, if they will not start wearing the Islamic veil within a week.

In a letter with the logo of Ansar al Sharia, a Salafist Islamic group suspected of terror activities and banned by the Tunisian government, the teachers are threatened by an organization which calls itself a repression cell in the region.

The death threat was denounced by the school director who took the letter to the police.

Primary schools have long been targeted by Islamists as part of what appears like a general plan to set up, without authorization, dozens of Koranic schools with programmes which are completely different from official ones.

A repression cell. How precisely accurate.

Handy solution. If you have trouble setting up your own schools just threaten all the other schools into complying with your program.

Some might complain that it’s unfair to call Salafis moderate. But I’m not being sarcastic. If the Muslim Brotherhood can be repeatedly referred to as a moderate group as well as many of the Salafist militias in Syria that aren’t Al Qaeda… that clearly isn’t a problem.

I’ve lost count of how many Burka bank robberies there have been. Apparently giving people permission to wear virtual ski masks in public is convenient for bank robbers.

This is why Muslims and Islamic garb shouldn’t be exempt from mask laws.

A women dressed in all pink is suspected of robbing a bank in Prince George’s County on Monday.

Police say the woman robbed the Capital One Bank in the 6200 block of Annapolis Road in Landover just after 5 p.m. She passed a note to the bank teller demanding cash and made away with an undisclosed amount of money.

The suspect is a black female in her late 20s, between 5 feet 8 inches and 5 feet 11 inches tall. She was wearing a pink head wrap and pink coat while carrying a pink cell phone with her at the time of the robbery.

Police have released a surveillance image of the suspect at the bank and are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

At that height, we could very well be dealing with a man in a Burka. It’s happened before. Capital one. What’s in your Burka?

Obviously it’s the native Italian woman protesting the Burka who will be jailed, not the Muslim immigrant male who attacked her.

A Milan prosecutor has requested a one-month prison sentence and €100 fine for Daniela Santanchè, an ex-leader of the Movement for Italy party, now a faction of Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party, for organizing an anti-burqa protest in 2009 without permission.

Santanchè protested against the burqa as 3,000 Muslims gathered to celebrate the end of Ramadan at Milan’s La Fabbrica del Vapore, a cultural centre, in September 2009.

“I saw dozens of women walking around with this portable prison that is the burqa,” said Santanché.

Daniela Santanchè said that she went to see “in person” if Muslim women respected the “law of the Italian state” that they can not go in the street with their faces covered. And since that day she has seen “dozens in a burqa”, partook in a discussion with the men of the Muslim community who insulted her. “I’d gone there to tell them that the law must be respected.”

Santanchè, along with 12 other activists, reportedly asked women entering the building to “uncover their face”. She also called on Italian police to apply a law that has been in place since the 1970s forbidding any dress that hides a person’s face.

The protest provoked anger among the Muslim community, ending with an Egyptian man, Ahmed El Badry, assaulting Santanchè. El Badry was fined €2,000.

“Santanchè went at the end of Ramadan to remove the burqa,” said the Imam of Segrate. “Ramadan is an important holiday for one million Muslims in Italy, she has offended them,” he continued wishing that Santanchè burn in the “fire on the day of judgment”.

Until then, he can be satisfied that an Italian woman protesting the Burka will be jailed, but not the Muslim immigrant who attacked her to defend his right to abuse women with the Burka.

Apparently it’s a bad idea to let masked people roam the streets. This is why most cities with high crime rates had laws about wearing masks in public. But Muslim Islamization groups arranged to waive those laws on the grounds of religious freedom.

Now Muslim and non-Muslim criminals are using the Burka to carry out crimes.

SEATTLE – A woman who was nine months pregnant was attacked and rob by two teenagers wearing burqas last Tuesday in North Seattle. Now, police are asking for help finding the attackers.

According to police, the pregnant woman was walking on Nov. 5 near the intersection of Pinehurst Way NE and NE 113th Street when two female teens dressed in all black and wearing burqas approached the woman and asked if they could use her cell phone.

The expectant mother said no, and that she would place the call for them. That’s when the girls, between the ages of 13 and 15, knocked the woman to the ground and tried to rob her before fleeing.

It is unclear if the victim suffered any injuries or needed any medical attention. Police called to the scene and police weren’t able to locate the suspects.

Well of course not. They were wearing masks. Legally. All they had to do was take off their Burkas, fold them up into a backpack and they were good to go.

“They say I’m a prostitute. It’s not true. I swear to Allah I’m not liar.”

This is like the Arabian Nights version of the Prince and the Pauper. A woman named Sara Al Amoudi is being sued in the UK, but it’s unclear whether she’s the princess she claims to be or the prostitute she’s accused of being… because she wears a face veil.

The woman at the centre of a $20m London property fraud has denied allegations she is an Ethiopian prostitute. She says she can back up her claims she is a wealthy Saudi princess by producing evidence of her lavish spending sprees.

Sara Al Amoudi, who arrived at the London High Court in a chauffeur-driven Rolls-Royce with an ‘HRH’ number plate and accompanied by three bodyguards, claims to be the daughter of Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi, a Saudi businessman who was ranked the 63rd richest man in the world by Forbes in 2011 and is estimated to have a wealth of around $12.3bn.

Her real identity and alleged wealth are central to allegations by London property developers Amanda Clutterbuck and Ian Paton that she is a fraud and she convinced them to transfer six luxury London apartments worth £14m ($20.8m) into her name as part of a larger property deal they believed would be funded by the Al Amoudi family.

The couple claim funds for the larger deal failed to materialise and the 30 year old woman refused to return ownership of the six apartments, which are based in upmarket London areas such as Knightsbridge and Belgravia.

”I thought I was living through an Alfred Hitchcock film, in which reality seemed to be totally distorted,” Clutterbuck told the court, claiming Ms Al Amoudi and her sister were not Saudi princesses but “were in fact prostitutes”.

Giving evidence before the court this week, Ms Al Amoudi refuted these allegations: “They say I’m a prostitute. It’s not true. I swear to Allah I’m not liar.”

The prosecution also produced witness Negat Ali, an Ethiopia-born south London furniture dealer, who claimed Ms Al Amoudi was not a Saudi princess and was a former prostitute originally from Ethiopia.

Race doesn’t really clarify much, because Al Amoudi married an Ethiopian woman.

However, Clutterbuck and Paton claim Ms Al Amoudi obtained her wealth by using her fake identity to borrow money from various banks, with reports claiming she had borrowed £4m from HSBC and allegedly had £165m in an account in Barclays bank.

Dubbed ‘The Vamp in the Veil’ by the British media, Ms Al Amoudi claims to have dated footballer Freddie Ljungberg and actors Colin Farrell and Joaquin Phoenix

And she did it all in a Burqa. A true inspiration.

Saudi religious police men stormed the UAE pavilion on Sunday and evicted three Emirati young men because “they are too handsome,”

There are no homosexuals in Saudi Arabia because any attractive men are immediately expelled from the country to avoid exciting the lust of the natives.

The more Islamist a country is, the more its clerics seem obsessed with pretty men. Egyptian Islamist Abu Islam Ahmed Abdallah told Bassem Youssef, the Jon Stewart of Egypt, that he “is so “pretty” he should wear a full-face veil, like women.”

Now the Saudi religious police stormed a UAE booth with excessively attractive men.

Also at the festival in the capital Riyadh, several Saudi religious police men stormed the UAE pavilion on Sunday and evicted three Emirati young men because “they are too handsome,” according to the Saudi news website Elaph.

A U-Tube film published in Saudi newspapers this week showed national guard members were evicting a member of the feared Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice from the UAE pavilion at Genaderia festivities in Riyadh after he stormed the stand. The incident triggered furor in the Kingdom, with the Commission Chairman Abdul Latif Al Shaikh calling for an investigation.

In its report, Elaph said several religious cops deployed through the festival rushed into the UAE pavilion on Sunday and escorted three Emirati delegates out.

The answer may be a Burqa for men.

The jacket with sunglasses integrated with the hood, nicknamed “burqa for men”, is gaining increasing popularity among young Britons since it went on sale a few weeks ago, but the police are concerned with the anonymity it provides. The “goggle jacket” is a jacket with a hood that can be closed completely by using flaps to cover the entire face, with two sheets of reflective plastic for the eyes. It was nicknamed the “burqa for men” by a Sunday newspaper.

Don’t worry, it’s for “educational purposes” so that they can understand Islam better.

The parents said they confronted their daughter and told her to explain exactly what she had been taught.

“They were asked about their perception of Islam,” she said. “Most of the class said they thought about terrorism. And her response was, ‘we’re going to change the way we perceive Islam.’”

And there’s no better way to change a teenage girl’s perception than with a Burqa.

The lesson on Islam was taught in a world geography class at Lumberton High School. The teacher brought burqas and other Islamic clothing for the female students to wear. They were also assigned to write an essay based on a Washington Post story that blamed Egypt’s troubles on democracy – instead of the Muslim Brotherhood.

We live in a surreal world of Title IX and educational Burqas. These things are really not compatible. But the school explains that it was all for diversity’s sake.

The lesson that was offered focused on exposing students to world cultures, religions, customs, and belief systems. A description on the whiteboard behind the students show the splits in religions: Islam (Sunni and Shia), Judaism (Reform, Conservatives, and Orthodox), and Christianity (Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant). Clothing expresses the individual culture. The lesson is not teaching a specific religion, and the students volunteered to wear the clothing.

The portrait focused only on Middle Eastern attire and the students are wearing variations of this customary attire found in the Middle Eastern culture. This portrait does not reflect the entire aspect of the lesson. The lesson encompassed diversity education so students receive a firm understanding of our world and why people are motivated differently.

So were there any students dressing up as Catholic nuns or Orthodox Jews? I suspect not, or else we would be seeing those photos.

“This is the normal answer from every school using CSCOPE,” said Janice VanCleave, a vocal critic of the program and the founder of Texas CSCOPE Review. “They are definitely promoting the Islamic religion.”

VanCleave said the trouble is that teachers are not giving students the full story. “They are not telling students how these young women are treated in this religion,” she told Fox News. “In the Islamic countries women are not treated well at all.”

They may not have been telling students… but they were certainly showing them.

One student quoted the teacher as saying, “We are going to work to change your perception of Islam.”

The teacher in the burqa lesson, according to a student, also said, “I do not necessarily agree with this, but I am supposed to teach you that we are not to call these people terrorists anymore, but freedom fighters.”

And we’re not calling them teachers anymore, they’re freedom educators.

Why, instead of celebrating female beauty and freedom, is the Obama administration supporting enforced coverings for Muslim women?

In his June 5 Cairo speech, President Obama stated that the United States has litigated cases “to protect the right of women and girls to wear the hijab and punish those who would deny it.” However, Mr. Obama did not tell the Muslim world what they needed to hear, and should have heard from the leader of the Free world. He had a moral obligation to add that we need to protect the right of Muslim women not to wear the hijab and punish those who force them to do so.

No one has prevented Muslim women from covering up. Even in France, the law only prevents Muslim women from covering their faces, which is very important for security reasons, to say the least, and also in schools for reasons of integration. But Obama wanted to score political points against Sarkozy, the French President. He also wanted to win favor with Muslim radicals in Egypt who rioted against France. In the process, the President forgot to say what should have been said in defense of women’s freedoms and human rights. That part of his speech was probably written by his head-covered Islamic adviser, Dalia Mogahed, who supports Sharia, Islamic Law.

Many Muslim governments do not force the Islamic outfit on women. Egypt is one such country, and the problem for the majority of Egyptian women is not being forced by their government to wear the hijab, but rather, they are forced by radical Islamists and their families. Mr. Obama should have known that the Egyptian government itself often discourages women from covering up and actually forbids the wives of Egyptian diplomats from wearing the hijab and even head covering. The reason I know that is because my brother is an Egyptian diplomat. The social and religious pressure on Egyptian women is huge and tyranny does not necessarily come from the top but often from Islamist Sharia enforcers on the streets who often want to take matters in their own hands. They use ridicule, pressure, intimidation, humiliation, and even throwing acid on women who do not wear the Islamic garb. Going with his Islamic advisor’s suggestion, Ms. Mogahed, President Obama chose to please the radical tyrants in his statement on the hijab. He should have known and should have mentioned how many women in the Muslim world suffer from Islamist tyranny, even the Egyptian Christian women who often choose to cover the Islamic way so as to avoid social stigma and physical violence.

Pleasing Islamist tyrants is not difficult to do. Just agree with all their demands, confine women to a life of imprisonment in a Burka and in the home, hand them Israel on a silver platter and allow the spread of Islam in your country, preferably to such a degree that it will finally be taken over by Sharia. That is all that Islamists really want. Being true to goals of political and religious freedom and to human and women’s rights will only get you in trouble with Islamists. Why bother with that if you want them to love you and to stop their terrorism? It is not difficult or brave to try to please Islamists and to ignore Muslim reformists who, after all, form the minority.

Coincidentally, it is President George W. Bush who actually liberated Muslim women in Afghanistan and who stood up to the Islamists like a hawk. He destroyed the Taliban, who treated women like cattle on the street, prevented them from going to school or work. Now Obama has set a standard of appeasement with Muslim countries which will be hard to change for the next administration, which will be viewed as anti-Islamic if they stand up for freedom in the Muslim world.

Our brilliant media has constantly tries to portray the opposite image of the two presidents. Obama became the progressive pro-women liberator and Bush was the conservative oppressor. Nothing is further from the truth when it comes to the Muslim world.

Unlike many Muslim leaders, President Obama associates Islam with wearing the hijab, when that is completely unnecessary, especially when Muslim immigrants should be embracing Western culture and seeking to assimilate. Otherwise, why are they here? The Islamic head cover was never the way ordinary Muslim women dressed, until recently. It has been a fashion statement that started in the late 70’s early 80’s and Egyptian University graduation photos reveal that reality.

The trend in Egypt is gradually changing and several celebrities have taken off their Burkas. Even in Pakistan and Afghanistan, as shown in the photos below, college women photos in the 60’s showed no Burkas, but in the 90’s that blue Burka has become the norm.

The symbolism of radical Islam is encapsulated in the covering up of women and that trend needs to be exposed and rejected. Muslim women have been led to believe they are the champions of Islamic law by wearing the Sharia flag, the Burka. I have been told by a head covered Muslim college professor once: “Off the record, I wear the Islamic head cover for political reasons, the ethnic look always win in America.”

I and many Americans of Arab and Muslim origin are very troubled by the kind of influence Dalia Mogahed could have on our administration and policies regarding Islam in America. In her help in writing Obama’s Cairo speech, she catered to pleasing her friends, the Muslim Brotherhood rather than the anti-Sharia progressives of Egypt.

Wearing of the hijab outside of a Muslim country is very important to Sharia lovers, like Ms. Mogahed. Incidentally, the literal meaning of her name, Mogahed, is ‘the jihadist.’ Wearing the hijab in the West is a statement that says: “My loyalty is for Sharia first, I even support laws that oppress women and here I am as the example.” Mogahed herself never speaks against Muslim laws that allow men to beat women and never shows any sympathy for the women who suffer stonings or floggings in the name of Allah.

Just for comparison’s sake, below are the photos of Ms. Mogahed and the wives of the Egyptian president, the Syrian president, and the king of Jordan, no hijab.

Dalia Mogahed.

Suzanne Mubarak, left.

Queen Rania of Jordan.

Asma Al Assad, first lady of Syria.

Here is a photo of Miss Egypt:

Defying a trend of liberation for Muslim women, is, once again, an individual such as Dalia Mogahed, whose photo we saw above.

And guess who works for the White House?

In some circles in the Muslim world, the hijab has become a laughing stock and jokes tell stories of women cheating on their husbands with visiting men who hide under a woman’s Burka. Some Arab belly dancers put the Burka on as a sexy lure, as seen in the photos below.

But, only in America we must respect the Burka as sacred and must preserve it and never joke about how oppressive (and silly) it is – and has become in the 21st century. American female journalists often find it fun and perhaps a sexy novelty to wear the head cover when reporting from an Arab country. To them I say, it is unnecessary, since the first lady of that country often does not ever wear a head cover.

By hiring Dalia Mogahed, a Sharia supporter and defender, as an advisor on Islam in the White House, the Obama administration is choosing the radical side of Islam over reformist Muslims who chose to assimilate in the US. Obama is not supporting the side of the reformists, freedom lovers and women’s rights advocates in the Muslim world whose lives are threatened everyday. America is simply telling us not to assimilate and to wear the Burka, a symbol of women’s oppression which many of us escaped from.

The Burka, especially that covers the face, takes away women’s identity, physical freedom. It is unhealthy, unfriendly and sets Muslim women to a lonely isolated existence. Muslim women in America are very diverse and Mogahed should never represent them. It is a disgrace to bring Mogahed to the White House to represent American Muslim views.

Any American who believes that radical Islam does not represent a clear and present danger to western civilization should be required to spend a month living under Sharia Law in a Muslim country. It would ultimately be a less expensive, and more lasting, means of energizing the nation than waiting for a terrorist to successfully complete the kind of mission of destruction that Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab came so close to executing on Christmas day.

My first experience with Sharia Law occurred more than a decade ago, shortly after I had deplaned from the British Airways 777 that deposited me in Jiddah, Saudi Arabia, in the course of a consulting project involving the Kingdom’s oil industry. Waiting to pass through customs, I observed a Saudi soldier swinging a machete, casually decapitating a score of Kewpie dolls that an unsuspecting westerner had tried to bring into the country. The torsos were returned to the traveler and the heads were dumped in the trash, all in accordance with Sharia Law. As a “how do you do?” there are better ways to make a first impression.

But Sharia Law prohibits any representation of the human form, and it is quite strict about depicting Allah’s other creations among the animal kingdom as well. Fish seem to be exempt from this prohibition, for reasons that I still do not completely understand. In any case, Islam also assumes that portraying mythical creatures, from golden idols to Kewpie people, might tempt gullible believers away from the true path. Thus it is entirely logical – under Sharia Law – to separate the head of a Kewpie doll from its shoulders with extreme prejudice.

That fact made the recent appearance of Burka Barbie all the more amusing to those westerners in the know. If Mattel were to ship a case of these dolls to a nation living under Sharia Law, Muslim girls would be allowed to play with them, or at least part of them, but only after Barbie’s cranium was separated from her shoulders.

Religious police prowl the streets of Saudi Arabia, as they do in most Muslim nations, looking for those who dare to resist the will of Allah, as that will was recorded by his prophet/stenographer Muhammad. The religious police in the Kingdom come in both the official and unofficial variety, the latter mostly composed of elderly male busybodies who revel in the opportunity to harass a western woman daring to wear a dress whose sleeves leave a portion of her forearms shamelessly exposed. These amateur versions of Bharney bin Fife are, not surprisingly, even more fanatic about their mission than their professional counterparts.

During one of my stints in Saudi Arabia, an American woman was arrested by the religious police while walking her dog, a Scotch Terrier. The Scotch Terrier is distinctive in its appearance, with a face that features a long chin beard. Long chin beards are also a requirement for Muslim males living under Sharia Law. Put these two facts together and the unavoidable Sharia legal conclusion is that the Terrier’s beard must go, lest it serve to mock the sacred traditions of Islam. Thus this unfortunate American woman was compelled to bring her pooch in for an appointment with one of Allah’s barbers.

It’s patently obvious that any religion concerned about the threats to it posed by dolls and dogs has some serious self-esteem issues. These sorts of amusing examples of Islamic insecurity, of which we have merely scratched the surface, get virtually no play in western media circles. Surely that would not be the case if – say – a Christian or Jewish sect found it necessary to take barber shears to Rover in order to preserve religious purity. But, as we have learned, diversity has its limits.

Critics of Islam focus on the more horrifying aspects of the religion, and justifiably so. Honor killings and suicide bombings are far more troubling issues than toy mutilation and offensive canine whiskers. Still, there is a lesson to be learned here. Even if one discounts the murderous, fanatic elements of Islam that apologists assure us merely represent a disenfranchised minority motivated by the need to defend themselves against western bullying (aka: “Bush’s fault”), that which remains – so called mainstream Islam – doesn’t provide much comfort.

At its questionable best, “mainstream Islam” has no room for western traditions and values. That fact has been made painfully clear to any American who has spent any significant amount of time living in the nations subject to rule of Islamic governments. Back in the days when I was commuting to Saudi Arabia, I learned of the quiet joke that many Americans regularly repeated when their flight was on final approach to an airport in the kingdom. The joke privately replaced the usual before-landing announcement issued by the flight crew. It went something like this: “Ladies and gentlemen, we will be landing in Jiddah shortly. Please set your clocks back one thousand years.”

Recent events clearly demonstrate that this jest, with all of its ominous implications, still applies.
