And the Democratic effort to suppress the information.

A Democratic congressman tried to use the might of the federal government to crush an investigation into reports that an Islamic terrorist group is using the Mexican border town of Ciudad Juarez as a base for launching an attack on the U.S. using car bombs or other vehicle borne improvised explosive devices (VBIEDs).

The Islamofascist group in question is the extraordinarily brutal Islamic State of Iraq and Greater Syria (ISIS) that has been conquering swathes of the Middle East with the long-term goal of establishing an Islamic Caliphate. (ISIS is also known as the Islamic State group and by the Obama-preferred acronym ISIL, which stands for Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.)

U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke of El Paso, Texas, contacted the local offices of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and the U.S. Border Patrol (USBP) “in an effort to identify—and evidently intimidate—sources that may have been used by” Judicial Watch, federal law enforcement sources told the nonprofit good-government group.

Judicial Watch, which has been legally recognized by the courts as a media outlet, reported on the terrorist conspiracy on August 29. Citing high-level federal law enforcement, intelligence, and other sources, the group reported that the federal government was bracing for an imminent terrorist attack on the southern U.S. border.

Agents in the departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Justice are all reportedly on alert and have been directed “to aggressively work all possible leads and sources concerning this imminent terrorist threat,” Judicial Watch reports.

O’Rourke’s office denies wrongdoing, but according to Judicial Watch the congressman’s telephone calls were followed by “a memo that came down through the chain of command threatening to terminate or criminally charge any agent who speaks to media of any kind.”

According to the Obama administration, Islamic terrorists are not operating in Ciudad Juarez. But the administration isn’t known for truth-telling. The White House has long downplayed the wave of violent crime, much of it committed by drug cartels, that rages along the U.S.-Mexico border.

The U.S. Border Patrol instructed its officers to steer clear of the most crime-infested portions of the border because they’re “too dangerous” and patrolling them could lead to an “international incident” involving a cross-border shooting, Judicial Watch previously reported.

Yet a parade of Democratic politicians including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and former Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano have declared the southern border to be secure despite overwhelming evidence to the contrary.

In addition to being soft on immigration and national security issues, left-wing lawmakers also don’t like being exposed by reporters.

In the Obama era Democratic politicians have a habit of punishing pesky journalists for doing their jobs. Many suspect the Obama White House played a decisive role in investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson’s abrupt departure from CBS News this past March after several of her news stories proved embarrassing to the administration.

Eric Holder’s Justice Department cracked down on investigative reporter Matthew Boyle, compounding its wrongdoing by unethically coordinating with the George Soros-funded character assassins at Media Matters for America.

And the Obama administration, in the words of CNN’s Jake Tapper, has used “the Espionage Act to go after whistleblowers who leaked to journalists … more than all previous administrations combined.” At least twice federal investigators have meddled in newsroom practices and put journalists in legal jeopardy.

Obama’s hostility to press freedoms doesn’t end there. His Federal Communications Commission wanted to place federal observers in newsrooms, ostensibly to study the news-gathering process. The media cried foul and the study has been dropped, at least for now.

Federal Election Commission chairman Lee E. Goodman, a Republican, warns that his Democratic FEC colleagues could try to ban books during election season by regulating book publishers. “We have wounded the free-press clause of the First Amendment,” Goodman said earlier this year after the commission failed to rule that a book by Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) was entitled to a routinely granted so-called media exemption.

This is “the same exemption that typically lets newspaper editorials, television channels and other outlets say what they want about political figures without worrying about campaign finance laws,” Fox News reported.

Many leftists want to go even farther in regulating the media by abolishing private news organizations altogether.

While the Obama administration dithers, the Australian government dramatically dismantled an ISIS plot to murder Australians for propaganda purposes.

Police in Sydney, Australia thwarted a plot Thursday by Islamic State supporters down under to randomly behead Australians.

“The raids involving 800 federal and state police officers – the largest in the country’s history – came in response to intelligence that an Islamic State group leader in the Middle East was calling on Australian supporters to kill, Prime Minister Tony Abbott said,” according to the New York Post.

“Abbott was asked about reports that the detainees were planning to behead a random person in Sydney. ‘That’s the intelligence we received,’ Abbott told reporters. ‘The exhortations – quite direct exhortations – were coming from an Australian who is apparently quite senior in ISIL to networks of support back in Australia to conduct demonstration killings here in this country.’

Will the Obama administration be as conscientious and effective as Australia has been when U.S.-born jihadis fighting for ISIS begin to return to America?

We’re going to find out, and probably sooner than you think.

When terrorists finally exploit our open borders, how will progressives save face?

Fox News correspondent Geraldo Rivera accused Matt Drudge’s website of “the worst kind of jingoistic rhetoric ever” for carrying news stories about the dangers of illegal immigration. He said Drudge “is doing his best to stir up a civil war. I mean, shame on Matt Drudge.” Republican Rep. Todd Rokita and his Indiana delegation have been criticized for suggesting the possibility that Latin American children pouring across our southern border are carrying deadly diseases. Some of them have already been discovered to be carrying lice and suffering from disease. We’ve yet to find out what kind of communicable diseases they could spread to American children when schools across the country are forced to admit them.

Unfortunately, many people approach our recent southern border problem as a “humanitarian crisis” and hint that congressmen who want to make securing our border our No. 1 priority are, as President Barack Obama says, “mean.” Others who argue for border security run the risk of being dismissed as racists. The Democrats are hoping that painting the Republicans as mean racists will help them with the Latino vote in November.

Securing our border is not only an immigration issue but, more importantly, a national security issue. International terrorists know that our southern border is insecure. They can simply fly to a Latin American country and then sneak across the border with deadly germ or chemical warfare weapons and dirty bombs, which could be planted anywhere.

According to Breitbart, “a leaked intelligence analysis from the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reveals the exact numbers of illegal immigrants entering and attempting to enter the U.S. from more than 75 different countries.” It reports that 28 “individuals from Pakistan were caught attempting to sneak into the U.S. this year alone, with another 211 individuals either turning themselves in or being caught at official ports of entry.” Texas Gov. Rick Perry says that the number of apprehended illegal aliens who come from countries with “substantial terrorist ties” is at a record high, countries such as Yemen, Somalia and Saudi Arabia.

On top of this, individuals from nations currently suffering from the world’s largest Ebola outbreak have been caught attempting to sneak into the U.S.

Deroy Murdock’s article titled “The Southern Border: Our Welcome Mat for Terrorists,” for National Review Online (April 25, 2013), reports that “Somalia’s Ahmed Muhammed Dhakane told authorities in 2011 that he earned up to $75,000 per day smuggling East Africans into America. His clients included three al-Shabaab terrorists. As the House report states: ‘Dhakane cautioned that each of these individuals is ready to die for their cause and would fight against the United States if the jihad moved from overseas to the U.S. mainland.’” Many Syrians and Iranians have been caught making illegal entry. Both Syria and Iran are supporters of Hezbollah, have chemical weapons and materials for dirty bombs, and hate “the Great Satan.”

Murdock makes reference to the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Oversight and Management Efficiency study titled “A Line in the Sand: Countering Crime, Violence and Terror at the Southwest Border.” It explained that between September 2001 and September 2012, there were 59 homegrown violent jihadi plots within the United States. The study said that the more violent threat to Americans is the ability of Islamist terrorist organizations, resulting from their growing presence in the Western Hemisphere, to exploit our porous southwestern border and enter the United States undetected.

Here are some questions that should be of concern to every American: Can the U.S. Customs and Border Protection assure Americans that it has arrested every terrorist attempting to make illegal entry to our country? Can it assure us that there are no terrorist cells operating in our country and awaiting word from our enemies to attack us? There’s another question that’s just as important: If there is a terrorist attack through our southern border, will Americans allow President Obama, congressional Democrats, the news media and progressives and liberals to deny that their weak border security policy was responsible?

Tijerina was held by authorities without bond on Jan. 26, 2010, and sentenced to a nine-month jail term and given a $100 fine.

The foreign gunmen had obtained firearms from the U.S. government as part of President Obama’s morally reprehensible Fast and Furious program. Under the program Mexican gangsters were provided with guns by the U.S. in the hope that they would go on a killing spree that would whip up public hysteria that might have led to a crackdown on gun ownership.

The ongoing assault on the Border Patrol is completely preventable. Evidence strongly suggests it is part of President Obama’s plan to cause chaos on the border as part of his larger assault on the nation’s free institutions. Obama’s policies encourage illegal aliens, including gang members and other violent criminals that are part of the Democratic Party’s natural constituency, to invade the United States in record numbers.

It is a kind of Mariela boatlift in reverse in which the U.S. president is aggressively recruiting and importing the dregs of Latin American society into the U.S.

It is taking a grave toll on the people of the United States.

As Breitbart News reports, a new report from the U.S. Department of Justice states that roughly half of all federal criminal cases in 2013 were filed in regions close to the southern border.

To no one’s surprise, the news report states:

During [Fiscal Year] 2013, U.S. Attorney’s offices filed a total of 61,529 criminal cases against defendants, according to the DOJ. Regions along the border each had more convictions than in any other district. 6,341 cases were filed in Western Texas, suggesting it is home to the country’s most severe crime patterns. 6,130 cases were filed in Southern Texas; 4,848 were filed in Southern California; 3,889 were filed in New Mexico; and 3,538 were filed in Arizona.

The lawlessness will continue and undoubtedly escalate in the remaining two and a half years of Obama’s term of office.

More Border Patrol deaths are inevitable thanks to the dangerous policies of this malevolent administration.

Taking matters into their own hands.

Before Friday night’s DACA-gutting immigration bill was passed in the House, rookie Majority Whip, Steve Scalise (R-La.) had been getting pounced on by the liberal media for his “inability” to push wavering House Republicans into getting something out the door before the recess-break. Ever since the Gang of Eight’s amnesty bill was introduced last year, the media has claimed that it’s Republican intransigence that is obstructing immigration and border security “reform.”

Whether true or not, it’s important to point out that this has never been the case for our conservative representatives at the state and local-level. In 2007 alone they introduced over 1,500 immigration bills in state assemblies across the nation with 240 being enacted into law. They’ve been just as busy since, probably because they’ve had to. The problems from decades of open-borders faced by state and local governments are getting ever closer to crisis-proportions. Given that Friday’s much improved bill will surely not survive the Senate’s or Obama’s chopping block, it may be time to reassess what our representatives at the state-level can and have been doing to deliver true patriotic immigration reform.

In a newly published book of academic essays about state-level immigration regulation, Strange Neighbors, immigration law guru Kris Kobach declares that “every state is a border state now.” Indeed, immigration-induced problems are the “new normal” for most state governments which will be compounded by a perennially underperforming national economy and budget-busting pension and welfare obligations. Drawing on Milton Friedman’s statement that “you can’t have free immigration and a welfare state,” Kobach reminds us that “[a] massive influx of individuals who either pay very little in income taxes or evade income taxes entirely, but consume public services at a relatively high rate, is costly for any receiving state.” This is clearly seen in the predominately Democrat-run “sanctuary cities,” which have some of the most unstable governments in the nation.

Despite the flurry of state and local bills over the past few years, states have been restrained from regulating immigration where it really hurts: education costs. It’s now estimated that around 50 percent of the increase in the national school-age population going forward will come from illegal aliens. But in the landmark 1982 decision of Plyer v. Doe, statutes denying free education for illegal alien children were deemed unconstitutional by a bare majority of the Supreme Court. In a display of ignorance startling even for liberals, then-Chief Justice William Brennan wrote for the court that “few if any illegal immigrants come to this country… in order to avail themselves of a free education.” On the contrary, says John Eastman, constitutional lawyer and fellow contributor to Strange Neighbors, a free top-notch education is “one of the three great magnets” for illegal aliens to come across our border – the others being employment and birthright citizenship.

According to Brennan in the Plyer decision, the statute in question (which originated from Texas) was struck down because “the record in no way supports the claim that exclusion of undocumented children is likely to improve the overall quality of education in the State.” Although there may not have been a lot of data available to counsel for Texas then, that was over 30 years ago and we now have a ton of statistics on education costs from illegal immigration. According to a 2010 report from the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the largest cost of illegal immigration to states today is, in fact, education. Just in Arizona that year alone, it cost taxpayers close to $1.5 billion. It now looks likely that what was missing for Brennan can now be met.

In 2011, Alabama attempted to build such a challenge to Plyer. It enacted a law that sought to gather information on education costs of illegal aliens and how it affected state-wide education in general. Although it sought to merely gather data, the statute was immediately challenged by treasonous lawfare groups, like the SPLC and ACLU, and implementation of the law has been delayed. But for states hoping to turn off the education magnet, Alabama’s efforts are instructive.

Since Plyer, Eastman reminds us, the Supreme Court has made some positive shifts towards states’ rights, as seen in such cases as US v. Lopez, US v. Morrison and Chamber of Commerce v. Whiting. It is hoped patriotic state legislators and attorneys general across the nation will follow Alabama and take up similar legislative initiatives. Considering our congress is compromised and our president wants the borders erased, it may be our only hope.

A conservative-led uprising among House Republicans scuttled Speaker John Boehner’s worse-than-useless border crisis and immigration legislation yesterday but party leaders vowed to try again today to pass the emergency funding bill.

“The bill as it was had more loopholes than a knitted afghan,” Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) said in a statement released exclusively to FrontPage late yesterday.

Tonight, many members were able to come together and hammer out many of those problems so that we could live with the result. Whether the final product gets the needed 218 votes will depend on how the final product looks once it is typed and printed.

Conservatives are apparently doing the people’s will. A new poll suggests Republican voters side with conservative lawmakers over House GOP leadership. Breitbart News reports:

Polling data compiled by Tea Party Patriots and provided exclusively to Breitbart News shows that a majority of Republican voters think Republicans standing strong on immigration is more important than repealing Obamacare, getting to the bottom of the Benghazi or IRS scandals—or anything else for that matter.

When asked by TPP’s pollster which issue they think is the [most] important for Republicans in Congress to deal with, 34.6 percent of GOP voters said stopping the flow of illegal immigrants across our southern border. Stopping Obama’s ‘illegal overreach’ with executive power came in a distant second with 24 percent of GOP voters saying that’s the most important, while 23 percent saying repealing Obamacare is the most important and just 7.2 percent say the IRS scandal is the most important issue and 2.8 percent say the Benghazi scandal is most important. A total of 8.4 percent of GOP voters said they don’t know or refused to answer.

The poll was conduc[t]ed with 1,000 likely GOP voters on Thursday, July 24 via a combination of cell phones and landlines nationwide, with a margin of error of 3.2 percent.

The showdown between rank-and-file Republicans and their leaders in the House comes as Americans grow increasingly angry over the border crisis that has been staged and carefully choreographed by the far-left levelers of the Obama administration.

President Obama threatens to plunge the nation into a grave constitutional crisis after Labor Day by using executive orders to grant a huge amnesty to millions of illegal aliens now in the United States. Of course, in the American system of government, Congress, not the president, is supposed to make laws. Congress has repeatedly refused to grant the amnesties that Obama seeks, but the president refuses to take no for an answer, pressing on regardless of how much damage he does to the country.

Lawmakers in the nation’s capital had been racing to wrap up legislative business and leave Washington for a five-week summer recess yesterday but Boehner put their vacation plans on hold after a revolt forced him to temporarily shelve his border bill that conservatives say is really amnesty legislation.

Some House members were already at the airport preparing to fly back to their congressional districts but “a sudden and fierce backlash forced Boehner to rescind the decision” to put the bill on the back burner, Breitbart News reports.

Lawmakers held a two-hour emergency meeting in mid-afternoon and agreed to stay in town and try to get some kind of legislation aimed at the border crisis to a vote.

Tea Party-backed Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa), a prominent anti-GOP establishment figure, said he was optimistic that a legislative package would pass.

“We are a good working team in there, it didn’t start with acrimony and didn’t end with acrimony, and now we’ve got a little work to do and I think we’ve got a shot to get’r done,” he said.

House Republicans are scheduled to meet at 9 o’clock this morning for a strategy session.

Conservatives scratch their heads, complaining that excessively risk-averse GOP leaders refuse to take aim at the Democrats’ unpopular immigration policies — even when the American people overwhelmingly side with Republicans.

The Boehner measure is so Obama-friendly that it constitutes the political equivalent of “catching your opponent’s Hail Mary pass and running it into your own end zone for them,” said Daniel Horowitz, policy director for the Madison Project.

Conservatives don’t like the bill because it would boost and speed up the migration of low-skilled workers from Latin American, give Democrats and lobbyists a chance to resurrect the Senate-approved amnesty measure from last year, but do zilch to prevent President Obama from unilaterally, unconstitutionally handing out millions of work authorizations to illegal aliens.

Instead of pounding away at Obama, whose poll ratings are deteriorating dramatically because of his irresponsible immigration polices, GOP leadership is content to let Obama walk all over them, conservatives say.

Republicans cannot exploit Obama’s political weaknesses because the party’s leaders “suck at politics,” Horowitz said, a viewed also held by Sens. Jeff Sessions (R-Alabama) and Ted Cruz (R-Texas), who has been trying to convince House members to reject any bill that fails to curb Obama’s amnesty-granting powers.

The immigration measured backed by leadership “is a plan for expedited asylum, not expedited removal” of the more than 100,000 illegal aliens from Central America, Sessions said.

Reps. Mo Brooks (R-Alabama) and John Fleming (R-La.) say few lawmakers, even those with Rs after their names, are serious conservatives.

“In my judgment, a majority of the senators and the House members of both parties are more than happy to betray America and the principles who made us who we are, first and foremost of which is the rule of law,” Brooks said. “Those of us who are fight for hard-working families, unfortunately, we’re in a minority.”

Fleming said that the “GOP leadership has two audiences, two bases.”

“One is the established Chamber of Commerce group that is looking for less expensive labor and they’re the ones who contribute a lot of money and so the [leaders] want to keep them happy,” the Louisiana lawmaker said.

“On the other hand, the Republican voting public out there wants the problems fixed, they want illegals treated humanely and they want border security and they want the newest wave sent back,” he said.

But if President Obama gets his way, no one will be deported.

The huddled masses yearning to get free stuff who insert themselves into the U.S. through the Rio Grande Valley are going to be held in relative luxury in a newly renovated 532-bed immigration detention complex for women and children near San Antonio, Texas.

Word of American taxpayers’ decadent generosity will no doubt spread at lightning speed to prospective uninvited immigrants in Matamoros, San Salvador, Tegucigalpa, and points beyond.

“I will refer to everyone in this facility as a resident,” said Enrique Lucero, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) San Antonio field office director. ”

“ICE generally refers to people in custody as detainees,” he added sanctimoniously.

While the nation’s veterans suffer and die after being stuck on the falsified waiting lists produced by Obama administration bureaucrats, federal officials plan to roll out the red carpet for the alien invaders whose housing and amenities will cost the government an average of $140 per day per detainee.

Newly arrived lawbreakers will be housed in what federal officials call “suites,” that will feature bunk beds, flat-screen TVs, and landline telephones. The facility also has a soccer field, ping pong tables, a weight room, and basketball courts. A playground will be added soon. Children will attend a nearby charter school and receive medical screenings, dental care, and new clothes.

It is unclear if youthful aliens will be taken to Disneyworld or to branches of the more modestly priced Chuck E. Cheese restaurant chain for birthday celebrations.

Meanwhile, CNSNews reports that “a thousand children said to be fleeing the violence in Central America will be welcomed to Chicago, where local children are routinely in the cross-fire of gang-related grudges.”

“The influx of unaccompanied child migrants is a growing humanitarian crisis that we can no longer ignore,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, an Alinskyite charlatan who no doubt helped to engineer the ongoing invasion when he served as President Obama’s White House chief of staff.

“While we have our own challenges at home, we cannot turn our backs on children who are fleeing dangerous conditions,” Emanuel said of young people who are probably just fleeing the ordinary perils and inconveniences of everyday life in Latin American banana republics. “We will do our part to ensure that these children are given access to services and treated fairly and humanely.”

Socialist kook Luis Gutierrez, a Democratic congressman from Illinois who wants to import even more illegals into the U.S. in order to help President Obama destabilize the country, said the fact that Chicago is “welcoming migrant children and working with them as their cases are resolved” made him proud of the Windy City.

Those young people aren’t exactly healthy, reports suggest. A Department of Homeland Security study indicates that the “unaccompanied alien children,” or UACs, from Central America are spreading tuberculosis (TB), chicken pox, and scabies, a contagious skin disease spread by mites. Several DHS workers at the various facilities where these aliens are being warehoused have been infected.

Many of the facilities are filthy because the new arrivals don’t know how to use bathroom facilities and have been relieving themselves at will, exposing DHS employees to human waste.

And over on the Left Coast, California’s far-out governor, Democrat Jerry Brown, offered the startlingly idiotic suggestion that climate change will somehow exacerbate the invasion of the U.S. by Central Americans, the Wall Street Journal reports.

“We can see how some are fearful of children walking across the border,” said the man who is presiding over California’s ongoing fiscal collapse. “What will they think when millions of people are driven north from the parched landscapes of a world degraded by intensifying climate change?”

Perhaps Gov. Brown needs to lay off the medical marijuana.

One of the biggest illegal immigration lies debunked.

It’s been reported everywhere — The New York Times, The Washington Post, Fox News — that the William Wilberforce Sex Trafficking Act requires that any non-Mexican children who show up on our border be admitted and given a hearing. (New York Times, July 7, 2014: “Immigrant Surge Rooted in Law to Curb Child Trafficking.”)

The problem, we’ve been told, is that a loophole in the sex trafficking law mandates these hearings — or “removal proceedings.”

But there is no such loophole.

The fact that people on both sides of the aisle are telling the same lie about this law is worrisome. Are Republicans being tricked into thinking we need an emergency bill, so that, two weeks later, we’ll see them emerging from a conference, saying:

We fixed the loophole! We didn’t get everything we wanted, but you can hear about that later.

No, tell me now.

Well, remember amnesty? It’s kind of in this bill. But the headline is: We closed the loophole! So no more worries about that loophole. But yeah, amnesty passed.

Why else would everyone be carrying on about a non-existent loophole? I know they’re mistaken because I read the law.

The Wilberforce law states, in relevant part:

“Any unaccompanied alien child sought to be removed by the Department of Homeland Security, except for an unaccompanied alien child from a contiguous country (i.e. Mexico — or Canada, so as not to sound discriminatory) … shall be — placed in removal proceedings … eligible for relief … at no cost to the child and provided access to counsel.”

Obviously, that’s the whole ball of wax. Once a kid is in, given La Raza attorneys and a hearing date, he’s never going home. No immigration judge is going to listen to a lawyer-manufactured sob story and say, “No, I’m sorry, that didn’t touch my heart. You have to go back to Huehuetenango.”

But the law’s definition of “unaccompanied alien child” limits the hearings to kids who have no relatives in the United States. If your relatives live here, the law assumes you’re not being sex-trafficked — you’re trying to join them.

Here’s the definition — note subsection (C):

“(g) Definitions

“(2) the term ‘unaccompanied alien child’ means a child who –

(A) has no lawful immigration status in the United States;

(B) has not attained 18 years of age; and

(C) with respect to whom –

(i) there is no parent or legal guardian in the United States; or (ii) no parent or legal guardian in the United States is available to provide care and physical custody.”

The law is not — as George Will suggested on “Fox News Sunday” — a general humanitarian mandate allowing all 2 billion poor children of the world to show up at our border and be told, “Welcome to America!” It’s a law to combat sex trafficking.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein and Vice President Joe Biden wrote the law — and Feinstein isn’t stupid. She’s well aware of illegal immigration. That’s why the law specifically excludes two huge categories of illegal aliens from getting hearings: (1) Mexicans; and (2) children who have relatives in the U.S.

Those cases look more like illegal immigration than sex trafficking. (Didn’t anyone wonder why Mexican kids are excluded?)

Mexicans make up the lion’s share of illegal immigrants in the U.S., and children with relatives already living in the U.S. are probably just trying to rejoin family — not trying to escape a fiendish kidnapper about to sell them into sex slavery.

According to last Friday’s New York Times, almost 90 percent of the 53,000 illegal alien kids given refugee status since October have already been transferred to parents or relatives living in the U.S. By the law’s clear terms, those 47,000 kids should have been summarily turned away at the border — just as Mexican children are.

(Democrats wailing about a “humanitarian” crisis — after calculating the precise number of voters they need — evidently don’t care about the Mexican kids.)

No law needs to be fixed. The only thing that needs to be fixed is the president.

Obama has gone mad and is defying the law in order to “fundamentally transform America” — as he pledged to do during the 2008 campaign — into Latin America. (Luckily for George Will, he won’t be around by the time Latin America gets to his neighborhood.)

Any Republicans pushing for an immigration bill to seal an imaginary loophole aren’t fighting Obama; they’re helping him.

Constitutionally, the remedy for a president defying the law so he can assist an alien invasion is impeachment. But the media won’t let us impeach Obama — and Republicans don’t have the votes, anyway. The only way for Americans to fight back is to put large Republican majorities in the House and Senate this November.

For the Left, maintaining the chaos is preferable to the solution.

House Republicans offered a dozen recommendations Wednesday to address the illegal immigration crisis. “Our focus has been to ensure the safety of the children and it has remained a top priority throughout this process,” said task force leader Rep. Kay Granger (R-TX). “In our personal meetings with the Presidents of Honduras and Guatemala they both stated that they wanted their children back, and we believe that is in the best interest of all the countries involved in this crisis. We look forward to working with these countries as they prepare to receive their children back.”

The recommendations offer a mixture of strategies that include more forceful border control and the elimination of intra-governmental turf fights interfering with Customs and Border Protection (CBP) operations on federal land. Border enforcement in Mexico and Central America, along with repatriation centers for minors set up in those countries are also part of the mix, as is an aggressive messaging campaign clarifying the downside of illegal immigration. Other recommendations include an acceleration of immigration hearings by adding additional judges to hear asylum requests, including a mandate to process “family units” within 5-7 days, tougher penalties on human traffickers, aka coyotes, and initiating law enforcement operations in both Mexico and Central America to stop the tide of illegals before they reach the U.S. border.

The primary recommendation for altering the current equation is a revision of the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 that would allow children from Central America to be processed and deported as quickly as those from Canada and Mexico. A revision of the anti-trafficking law is a critical necessity. Despite admirable intentions when it was enacted six years ago, the latest onslaught of 57,000 unaccompanied alien children (UACs) over the last nine months—more than seven times average number that came across the border each year prior to the law’s enactment—has rendered it obsolete.

The numbers tell the story: of those 57,000 UACs only 2,000 have been repatriated and immigration courts are overwhelmed with a backlog of more than 350,000 cases. As a result it will be years before many of these children will be called to show up for their day in court.

If they show up at all. Juan Osuna, who heads the Justice Department’s immigration courts, revealed the predictable truth at a recent congressional hearing, telling lawmakers that 46 percent of UACs failed to appear at their hearings between the start of the FY2014 last Oct. 1 and the end of June. And even when they do appear and get a deportation order or are allowed to return home voluntarily, there is no guarantee that they will abide by the law. In FY 2013 two-thirds of the 6,437 cases adjudicated reached that outcome, but data from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) shows that only 1,600 children actually returned home.

House Republican address this reality as well. UACs who do not wish to be voluntarily returned to their home country must remain in the custody of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) while awaiting an immigration court hearing that must occur no more than 7 days after they are screened by HHS.

That last item is as critical as changing the anti-trafficking law. Right now the Obama administration is dispersing thousands of UACs and other illegals throughout the nation in an effort that facilitates the human trafficking they claim to oppose. That reality was affirmed by Mark Greenberg, Health and Human Services Acting Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families, at a Senate hearing earlier this month. Under questioning he admitted that it was policy not to verify the immigration status of those to whom the children were being released.

Furthermore, the government doesn’t even run fingerprint checks on every potential sponsor who arrives to claim a child. According to HHS spokesman Kenneth Wolfe, such checks are limited to those sponsors who aren’t parents or legal guardians, if the child is under the age of 12 or if they “detect” other safety concerns. The only all encompassing criterion is a public records check of each sponsor. After that they hand the sponsor a handbook dealing with the child’s right to enroll in school and offering warnings regarding trafficking and traumatic stress. With such minimal oversight it is no surprise that a nonprofit warned that as many as one-in-ten children end up in unacceptable or dangerous conditions.

There is little doubt that amending the 2008 law, coupled with keeping UACs and other aliens in custody until their immigration hearings, would be enormous disincentives with regard to the current status quo that encourages thousands to risk life and limb to get here. Thus it is totally unsurprising that Democrats are against the GOP plan in general, and amending the law in particular. “Almost every Democrat I talk to says we should hold the line on the laws passed to protect children from sex trafficking and smugglers,” said Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) who also accused Republicans of trying to “exploit” the border crisis. “The Republicans seem to be divided between the ones who don’t think the money is necessary, the ones who want to weaken laws protecting children and the ones who want to deport all of the DREAMers and other undocumented immigrants before we do anything else,” he added.

The price tag for the GOP’s plan is $1.5 billion in emergency funding they would offset with spending cuts. It stands in sharp contrast to the president’s $3.7 billion request that is best summed up by Center for Immigration Studies fellow Dan Cadman who analyzed the package. He called it a “closed circle of illogic” in which the government “takes a hands-off approach to the UACs being smuggled, and after a few days of detention and make-work processing, passes them over to the ones who initiated the venture.” Moreover, it scrupulously avoids addressing any changes to the 2008 law, as once again Democrats, lead by the president of the United States, insist their orchestrated humanitarian crisis be addressed before the border breakdown that feeds and worsens it.

And make no mistake: it is an orchestrated crisis because it is occurring even as crime rates in Honduras, Guatemala and El Salvador—that Democrats like to cite as the primary impetus for the surge—have been declining for the last two years, even as the number of UACs coming to America has skyrocketed in the same time frame. The real impetus behind the surge is what it has always been: President Obama’s unilateral legalization of Dreamers in 2012, coupled with just released data showing a marked decrease in the number of children turned away at the border. In 2008, the last year of the George W. Bush administration, there were 8,143 turn-a-ways. Last year there were only 1,669. There has also been a decrease from the 600 minors ordered to be deported each year from non-border states 10 years ago, to the paltry 95 deported in 2013.

Add the administration’s determination to conspicuously ignore an agreement between Mexico and Guatemala facilitating the passage of UACs through Mexico on their way to the United States—which Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto insists will be expanded to include Honduras and El Salvador “to make Central American migration more organized and safer”—and the message remains clear: if you get here, chances are excellent you can stay here.

In addition, Senate Democrats are formulating a $2.7 billion plan of their own that omits any effort to amend the trafficking bill. That means even under the best of circumstances, some sort of reconciliation process between the two chambers will have to take place before anything meaningful can happen. That reality pokes a giant hole in incoming House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy’s (R-CA) hopes that any bill will be voted on before Congress recesses in August.

It’s not going to happen.

Thus the massive influx of 57,000 UACs–along with the additional 240,000 illegals that have arrived here from April through June, yet somehow remain largely under the media radar–will continue. There is little doubt that under-reported reality would take much of the air out of the “humanitarian” balloon, as would multiplying the three-month influx by four to reach an annual total of nearly 1.2 million illegals who could come across our Southwest border, if the current rate remains constant.

And why shouldn’t it remain constant? We have a president who won’t even visit the border, much less act on a crisis of national proportions. We have a Democratic Party pushing that president to expand his Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) plan to include their parents, as well as halt further deportations. We have an Obama administration looking to put illegals in the military, even as it aims to cut the military to pre-WWII levels.

In short, the entire nation is being held hostage to a despicable leftist agenda, aided and abetted by an equally compromised GOP Establishment: either Americans embrace comprehensive immigration reform, or the Cloward-Piven-inspired, “crash the system” chaos at the border will continue. The dispersal of illegals, not just to questionable individuals, but to locations in towns and cities throughout the nation, will continue. The aiding and abetting of human trafficking by our own government will continue. The utter contempt for the rule of law and our national sovereignty will continue.

A letter signed by the governors of Alabama, Kansas, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Utah and Wisconsin was sent to President Obama this week. “The failure to return the unaccompanied children will send a message that will encourage a much larger movement towards our southern border,” it stated. Exactly.

Gov. Perry sends a message to Central America -- and the White House.

Texas Governor Rick Perry announced Monday afternoon that he is sending 1,000 members of the Texas National Guard to the U.S.-Mexican border. “Over the years I have repeatedly called on the federal government to live up to its responsibility of protecting this great nation by securing the border,” said Perry, who added that he will “not stand idly by while our citizens are under assault and little children from Central America are detained in squalor.”

Under assault might be an understatement. According to Perry, more than 203,000 illegal aliens responsible for committing more than 640,000 crimes, including 3000 homicides, have been booked into Texas county jails since 2008. He further pointed out that the thousands of unaccompanied minors apprehended crossing the border comprise less than 20 percent of total influx and while enforcement agents are giving humanitarian aid to these children, “drug cartels, human traffickers and individual criminals are exploiting this tragedy for their own criminal opportunities.”

Perry’s contention about the percentage of children that illegally gain entrance to the United States was given substantial credence by the Obama administration itself. In a late Friday afternoon news dump aimed at minimizing media coverage, U.S. Border Patrol data revealed that while the number of unaccompanied alien children crossing the border has doubled to 57,525 in the nine month period from the beginning of FY2013 to the present, what the agency refers to as “family units” has seen a 493 percent increase from 9,350 to 55,420 over the same period. As the Daily Caller’s Neil Munro explains, the far more explosive growth of these family units “has been hidden by White House and agency officials, who have tried to portray the influx as a wave of children fleeing abuse and violence.” He further notes this portrayal “has been picked up and spread by Democratic legislators, reporters and bloggers” in an effort to mute the public’s anger regarding the Obama administration’s failure to secure the border.

In other words, a de facto invasion becomes a “humanitarian” crisis.

Perry was forced to address that portrayal on Sunday with Fox News’s Brit Hume who wondered if sending the National Guard to the border would actually work when children who have “undergone these harrowing journeys to escape from the most desperate conditions in their home countries” are confronted by troops “who won’t shoot them and can’t arrest them.” Perry replied that Hume was talking about “two different things” and that it was necessary to “send the message back now so that we can staunch (sic) the bleeding” even as the humanitarian crisis that already exists is addressed. “The issue is with being able to send that message,” Perry said. “The visual of it is more important. We know that. We listen to those conversations–or, I should say, conversations are being monitored with calls back to Central America–and the message is, ‘Hey, come on up here, everything is great, they’re taking care of us,’ and that needs to stop.”

The 1,000 troops are ostensibly a stopgap measure until Congress and the Obama administration address Perry’s request to hire 3,000 additional border patrol agents to work the Texas corridor. In a meeting with Perry and other officials in Dallas on July 9, Obama made it clear that despite Perry’s request he act unilaterally to address the crisis, he would not do so. “He suggested, well maybe you just need to go ahead and act and that might convince Republicans that they should go ahead and pass the supplemental,” Obama said. “I had to remind him, I’m getting sued right now by Mr. Boehner apparently for going ahead and acting instead of going through congress. Well, here’s a good test case.”

Nonsense. In 2006 George W. Bush ordered 6,000 troops to the border, (a number that has since dwindled to a current level of approximately 300) and Obama could do the same were it not for the reality that he prefers holding such action hostage to Congress passing his massive $3.7 billion emergency funding package. It is a package designed to remain in legislative limbo, as Republicans insist the primary focus should be stopping the influx at the border, while Democrats demand that the “humanitarian” crisis — in the form of new facilities and legal services — be the first agenda addressed.

In the meantime, the border remains a sieve.

Thus it was no surprise that Perry accused the federal government of paying “lip service” to the border crisis as he announced his deployment of “Operation Strong Safety.” He explained the National Guard will function as a “force multiplier on the ground and providing additional air assets beyond their current efforts.”

Because Perry has been forced to take this action after repeatedly asking the Obama administration to do it, Texas, rather than the federal government, will be picking up the tab for the deployment, expected to cost approximately $12 million per month. This arrangement also makes Perry the commander in chief of the troops unless Obama is willing to take over the mobilization at the federal level.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest made it clear that isn’t going to happen anytime soon, even as he characterized Perry’s efforts as symbolic. “Gov. Perry has referred repeatedly to his desire to make a symbolic statement to the people of Central America that the border is closed,” said Earnest. “And he thinks that the best way to do that is to send 1,000 National Guard troops to the border. It seems to me that a much more powerful symbol would be the bipartisan passage of legislation that would actually make a historic investment in border security and send an additional 20,000 personnel to the border.”

Again, utter nonsense with a dollop of disingenuousness plopped on top. As the Washington Post reveals, “top officials at the White House and the State Department had been warned repeatedly of the potential for a further explosion in the number of migrant children since the crisis began escalating two years ago, according to former federal officials and others familiar with internal discussions.” And the very same Lackland Air Force base that was opened up as a shelter for illegal youths in May, served in precisely the same capacity more than two years ago. “There were warning signs, operational folks raising red flags to high levels in terms of this being a potential issue,” one former senior federal law enforcement official, speaking on the condition of anonymity, told the paper.

As for Perry’s symbolic statement, it is far better than the no-so-subtle message sent by the Obama administration as recently as last week. That’s when the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) was on the verge of completing a deal with non-profit network BCFS to house as many as 600 illegal alien children between the ages of 12-17 at a resort hotel complex in Texas, replete with three swimming pools, lighted tennis courts, and a Jacuzzi. The deal fell through when the reality of taxpayers footing the bill for the resort—along with a combination of BCFS services and newly-hired workers that could have cost as much as $50 million—became a public relations nightmare.

That would be the same Obama administration that initiated a public relations campaign in June to deter the massive influx of illegals from Central America. Americans might ask themselves which message resonates more: the notion that those getting into the country might not be able to stay here, or the one that lets those who do know there is a possibility they could be ensconced in a luxury hotel?

Yet even that message pales in comparison to another agenda being pursued by the Obama administration. A rule change known as the “Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule” introduced by the administration in 2013 and set to take effect in October would give the administration vastly increased power over local zoning laws in any municipality that that accepts block grants from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The rule is backed by pro-amnesty advocates who see it as a vehicle allowing the administration to force those municipalities to house illegals.

Thus, it is unsurprising that Gov. Perry’s announcement was met with derision by Democrats who accused him of “militarizing” the border. “Militarizing our border is the wrong response to the arrival of children,” said Rep. Joaquín Castro (D-TX) in an email. “I remain hopeful that our state can provide a more helpful response than to send armed soldiers to greet children seeking refuge from violence.”

Perry rejected that notion. So did Congressman Louis Gohmert (R-TX). “Our nation is being invaded in what the U.S. Commanding General of SOUTHCOM described as an ‘existential threat,’” he said in a statement. As articulated in Article I, Section 10, of the United States Constitution, the State of Texas has the right to defend herself, as the largest invasion is coming into Texas.”

The Americans must decide which assessment is closer to the truth. Thus, a critical question arises: is the current fiasco occurring on our Southwest border a humanitarian crisis that has engendered an invasion, or an invasion that has engendered a humanitarian crisis? Our national sovereignty may depend on the answer.

With thousands of foreign nationals allowed to infiltrate the U.S., Eric Holder warns of terrorist threat.

After years of working hard to comfort America’s terrorist enemies and erase U.S. borders, the nation’s perpetually embattled attorney general is suddenly concerned that Middle Eastern jihadists are working together to create undetectable explosives that could be used to blow up U.S. airliners.

Intelligence reports suggest Islamic terrorists in Yemen and Syria have joined forces to make the stealthy bombs and this development is “more frightening than anything I think I’ve seen as attorney general,” Eric Holder said on ABC’s “This Week.”

The collaboration between Islamist militants in the two Muslim countries is a “deadly combination” of those who have technical skills and “people who have this kind of fervor to give their lives in support of a cause that is directed at the United States and directed at its allies.”

“It’s something that gives us really extreme, extreme concern,” Holder said.

Holder’s comments come as the U.S.Department of Homeland Security announced it was ratcheting up security measures at international airports. Individuals will now be made to demonstrate that their electronic devices such as cellphones and laptop computers are not bombs by turning them on at security checkpoints.

Such measures are “prudent steps that are necessary to protect the flying public,” Holder said.

Yet while Holder pretends to be a responsible adult, at the same time evidence has surfaced that security measures have been all but suspended at U.S. airports for newly arrived illegal immigrants in the southern states.

Breitbart Texas reports that illegals are being allowed to board commercial airliners without valid ID. “The aliens who are getting released on their own recognizance are being allowed to board and travel commercial airliners by simply showing their Notice to Appear forms,” said Hector Garza, a spokesman for Local 2455 of the National Border Patrol Council. (NBPC is the labor union representing about 17,000 Border Patrol agents and support personnel assigned to that law enforcement organization.)

“This is not the CBP [Customs and Border Protection] or another federal agency renting or leasing an aircraft, these are the same planes that the American public uses for domestic travel,” said Garza.

This just adds insult to injury. Not only are we releasing unknown illegal aliens onto American streets, but we are allowing them to travel commercially using paperwork that could easily be reproduced or manipulated on any home computer. The Notice to Appear form has no photo, anyone can make one and manipulate one. They do not have any security features, no watermark, nothing. They are simply printed on standard copy paper based on the information the illegal alien says is the truth.

Added Garza:

We do not know who these people are, we often have to solely rely on who they say they are, where they say they came from, and the history they say they have. We know nothing about most of them, ICE releases them into the American public, and now they are boarding aircraft at will with a simple paper document that anyone can easily alter or reproduce themselves.

Central Americans are not the only people crossing our border and being released. Does anyone actually think that cartels and others criminal or possible terrorist organizations are not taking advantage of the fact that we are having to leave our border wide open while we reassigning the majority of our agents to process family units and minors? Of course this situation is being exploited by such threats.

NBPC Vice President Shawn Moran told Washington, D.C. radio station WMAL’s Larry O’Connor yesterday that the ongoing invasion by illegal aliens is straining Border Patrol resources.

“We don’t normally have these large groups of people trying to surrender to us,” Moran said. “They are tying up officers in the field and we believe this is being orchestrated for the benefit of the drug cartels.”

The Border Patrol has caught plenty of illegal immigrants from countries that the U.S. regards as state sponsors of terrorism, he said, adding he is concerned that terrorists are “trying to fit in with the groups that we’re catching.”

Obama administration officials like Holder are now giving Oscar-worthy performances, posing as public servants deeply worried about the nation’s porous southern border. They are providing political cover for the president who has been trying ever since his January 2009 swearing-in to generate disorder at the border.

President Obama gave a green light to the current wave of illegal immigrants when he indicated he has no interest in enforcing U.S. immigration laws.

Obama has provided executive amnesty and work permits for illegal immigrants covered by the proposed “DREAM Act” that Congress has repeatedly rejected. That legislation, if enacted, would cover individuals who claim to have entered the U.S. as minors under their parents’ guidance.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a directive in August 2013 expanding that amnesty to illegal immigrant relatives of “DREAM Act” beneficiaries. DHS issued another directive in December 2012 reinforcing the existing policy under which almost all immigration offenses were deemed unenforceable absent a separate criminal conviction.

Throughout all of this, Holder has functioned more as Obama’s consigliere than as the American people’s lawyer.

And just last week Holder met with officials in Oslo, Norway and London in an effort to get European allies to do more to stem the the possible flow of terrorists into their countries. The meetings were an opportunity to “exchange information in the way that you can’t if you’re not present” and “come up with techniques to thwart those who would try to do us all harm.”

It is unclear if the foreign dignitaries laughed in the face of Holder, who has long worked to frustrate policy initiatives aimed at making Americans safe from terrorist attacks and invasions.

Every month tens of thousands of illegal aliens, some of whom may be terrorists or part of organized crime, are now streaming unimpeded into the southern United States from Mexico. Some of these illegals are being allowed on domestic airline flights without providing proper identification. And everyone knows that in Democrat-administered regions these illegal immigrants won’t be asked for ID when they try to vote for Hillary Clinton or Elizabeth Warren for president in 2016.

After all, Holder is a poster child for “man-caused disasters,” the Obama administration’s hideous euphemism for acts of terrorism. He is the top law enforcement official serving a president who has provided military and other support to Islamic totalitarians in Libya, Egypt, and elsewhere.

Holder orchestrated or at least silently assented to the Obama administration’s Fast and Furious gun-running operation that cost Border Patrol officer Brian Terry and hundreds of Mexican nationals their lives. This Reichstag fire-like piece of political theater that provided firearms to drug cartels was designed to cause an outbreak of violence and mayhem in an effort to whip up public hysteria against the Second Amendment.

Holder himself has done more to undermine U.S. national security than just about anyone else in the Obama administration, except perhaps for Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Janet Napolitano, and President Obama.

The ultimate political fixer, Holder has a long history of aiding, and in some cases, abetting terrorists. Like Obama, he appears to have a soft spot for bombers in particular, and also like Obama, he has become the envy of sociopaths the world over for his impressive lying and obfuscation skills.

While serving as deputy attorney general, Holder was a principal figure in the vetting of the Clinton administration’s infamous 176 last-minute clemencies in January 2001. Those benefitting from Holder’s questionable recommendations included former Weather Underground members Susan Rosenberg and Linda Evans. Rosenberg was a suspect in the deadly 1981 armed robbery of an armored car and was given a 58-year prison sentence for possessing more than 700 pounds of explosives and an arsenal of illicit weapons. Evans received 40 years for harboring a fugitive from the robbery and using false identification to purchase firearms. She also received five years in connection with eight bombings. (Note: July 18 is the first anniversary of the untimely passing of Larry Grathwohl, a Vietnam War veteran who infiltrated the Weather Underground and later provided evidence against Evans.)

Holder was also involved in President Clinton’s 1999 pardon of 16 members of FALN, Armed Forces of National Liberation—a violent terrorist organization (as designated by the FBI) that was active in the U.S. from 1974 to 1983. The Marxist-Leninist group detonated almost 130 bombs in government and corporate buildings in Chicago, New York, and the nation’s capital in a failed bid for Puerto Rican independence. FALN bombs killed six individuals — including Chile’s ambassador to the U.S. —and wounded at least 80 others. Congress subsequently condemned the acts of clemency by votes of 95-2 in the Senate and 311-41 in the House.

An enabler of Islamic terrorists, former lawyer Lynne Stewart was released from prison last year after serving only three years of a 10-year prison sentence for terrorism-related offenses. The premature return to society of Stewart, who has terminal cancer, was made possible after Holder’s Justice Department relaxed the criteria for early release on compassionate grounds.

During George W. Bush’s presidency, Holder was a partner at the Washington, D.C., law firm of Covington & Burling, which represented Islamic terrorists. At one time he condemned the terrorist detention center in Guantanamo Bay as an “international embarrassment.” As U.S. attorney general, Holder has sought to try Muslim terrorists in civilian courts instead of military tribunals and has lauded Supreme Court decisions that undermine what the previous administration called the Global War on Terror.

With policies like these, more Holder-made disasters are a dead certainty.

For all intents and purposes, the Obama administration is engaged in human trafficking.

At a Senate hearing Wednesday, Health and Human Services Acting Assistant Secretary for the Administration for Children and Families Mark Greenberg admitted that, even if the Obama administration knew it was releasing Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs) to other illegal aliens, they would do so based on the “totality of the circumstances” that apparently justifies such irresponsibility. However, when pressed by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK), Greenburg made it clear the Obama administration doesn’t even want to know to whom they are releasing the children, disclosing the reality that HHS does “not verify the immigration status of the individual.”

Pressed further by Coburn, who wanted to know if HHS thinks it would be less likely for illegal alien parents to bring their children back to deportation hearings, Greenburg dug himself a deeper hole. “This is about who the child should live with while they’re awaiting the removal proceedings and during the removal proceedings,” he insisted. Coburn wanted to know if the refusal to inquire about the status of family members taking custody of illegal immigrant children was HHS policy. “Yes, that is the case,” Greenburg replied.

National Review’s Victor Davis Hanson emphasizes the utter lawlessness of such a policy. “Here in the U.S., how can our government simply choose not to enforce existing laws?” he wonders. Hanson then eviscerates the administration’s “Catch and Release” policy. “How can American immigration authorities simply send immigrant kids all over the United States and drop them into communities without firm guarantees of waiting sponsors or family? If private charities did that, would the operators be jailed? Would American parents be arrested for putting their unescorted kids on buses headed out of state?”

Hanson further notes the Mexican government is abetting the human trafficking. Despite having some of the “harshest” immigration laws in the world, where those illegally crossing the Mexican border are either summarily deported or jailed, there are “tens of thousands of Central American children crossing with impunity hundreds of miles of Mexican territory, often sitting atop Mexican trains,” he writes.

The network of Mexican freight trains to which Hanson refers are so well known that they have a name: Tren de la Muerte,” or “Death Train.” That appellation refers to the reality that children must hop aboard the trains while they are moving, and those that don’t make it are often severely injured. “The couplings between the cars are notoriously dangerous. I see children who have lost an arm and a leg or both legs,” said Erica Dahl-Bredine, an El Salvador representative for Catholic Relief Services. An aid group in Honduras confirms that assessment, tallying more than 450 illegals who have been mutilated.

And it’s not as if the Mexican government is unaware of the situation. The trains, also known as La Bestias, aka The Beasts, are a regular feature on the evening news in Mexico. They regularly depart from a depot at Arriaga, in the state of Chiapas near the Guatemalan border for the two-week journey to the U.S. border, during which they are routinely accosted by gangs, and drug traffickers who subject the “passengers” to rape, kidnapping, extortion and mugging. In addition, corrupt local officials demand bribes in exchange for allowing those passengers to continue on their journey.

How is this possible? “Human despair has been turned into a commodity, a flourishing business for illicit enrichment,” explains Huffington Post contributor Homero Aridjis.

It is illicit enrichment that flows overwhelmingly to a number of drug cartels. They have taken over a largely informal border smuggling business formerly operated by “coyotes” and turned into a sophisticated human trafficking operation where they maintain control of the entire border, as well as the routes leading up to it. As a result there has been a tenfold increase in the cost of getting across the border, from approximately $300 to $500 often paid to a single coyote, to as much as $3,000 to $6,000 per person, with prices often determined by age, gender and country of origin.

Furthermore, this “business model” may be successful to the point where it might be more lucrative than drug smuggling. According to statistics from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), total seizures of cocaine, heroine, marijuana and methamphetamine have declined in every state that shares a border with Mexico. Yet most telling, that decline has been greatest in Texas, which is the epicenter of the current crisis. The DEA and the U.S. Border Patrol refuses to confirm that the two are causally related, but Arizona Border Patrol spokesman Peter Bidegain insists the smugglers will “use what’s successful, so they’ll try anything.”

The apprehension of a staggering 57,000 UACs since October 2013—the latest revision of the total revealed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Gil Kerlikowski at a Senate hearing Wednesday–coupled with the additional 240,000 illegals apprehended since April, suggests the success has been overwhelming. If one takes the lowball figure of $3,000 per person and multiplies it by the number of apprehensions, human trafficking has turned a profit of $891 million over the last eight months.

And all of it is being abetted by an Obama administration that knows the overwhelming majority of UACs released into the general population will never show up for their deportation hearings. At the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs hearing Wednesday, Thomas Winkowski, deputy assistant secretary for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement admitted as much, revealing that only 1300-1500 of the UACs from El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, the three countries fueling the crisis, have been deported so far. That number represents just over 3 percent of the total number of UACs apprehended to this point.

Statistics presented at a House Judiciary Committee just over two weeks ago paint an even grimmer reality. First, Committee Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) revealed that since 2011, ICE has only been able to remove fewer than 2,000 minors per year. Tom Homan, the official overseeing ICE’s removal operations, revealed a big reason why. “Last year we removed 1,800, but again as I said about the immigration courts: When we looked at all the unaccompanied alien children that were filed with the immigration court in the last five years, 87 percent of them are still in proceedings. We have no final orders,” Homan said.

Naturally, President Obama blamed Republicans for the crisis. At a press conference Wednesday night he insisted their opposition to his $3.8 billion spending request—along with their failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform–is facilitating it. “Are folks more interested in politics or are they more interested in solving the problem?” Obama said he asked Texas governor Rick Perry. “If they are interested in solving the problem then this can be solved. If the preference is for politics then it won’t be solved.”

Obama’s idea of “solving” the problem is to wait until Congress passes the appropriations bill before he will do anything about sealing the border—if at all. Hot Air’s Noah Rothman cuts through such transparent disingenuousness, explaining that in an emergency, “the executive branch does not wait for Congress to pass funding before it acts. It is beyond insulting to suggest that emergency supplemental funding is a precondition for a response to an emergency,” he writes.

It is even worse than that when one recalls Obama telling Americans in January that he has a pen and a phone, ”And I can use that pen to sign executive orders and take executive actions and administrative actions…”

And as hypocritical as the president is, the appropriations package is even more so. Dan Cadman at the Center for Immigration Studies analyzed the bill. He explains that 49 percent, or $1.8 billion, of the total requested by Obama would be spent on resettlement costs, not just for UACs, but entire family units. Another $5 million would be spent breaking the law because it would go to DHS attorneys tasked with defending UACs in court, even though “Section 292 of the Immigration and Nationality Act specifically prohibits representation of aliens in immigration proceedings at government expense.” Much of the enforcement portion of the funds would be spent on recouping costs for temporary detention and subsequent resettlement of illegals, 47 percent of whom are adults.

He also notes the “meager” $109 million being requested to facilitate anti-smuggling investigative efforts is destined to achieve limited success because the U.S. has “very little influence over ineffectual or corrupt police and military services in the source and transit countries, to ensure that they root out criminal gangs responsible for the smuggling.”

Cadman then levels the boom on the Obama administration.”On the U.S. side, the ones responsible for predicating the effort through contact with, and payment to, the gangs are often the parents or other relatives of those being smuggled and, rather than investigate and prosecute such individuals to the full extent of the law, the government instead acts as the ultimate delivery agent, passing along the smuggled-but-apprehended alien to the people who paid to have him or her smuggled,” he explains.

On Tuesday, Fox 11 News reporter Gigi Graciette tweeted that sources have informed her that three individuals on the government’s terrorist watch list attempted to cross the border from Mexico to California. Breitbart News reports that six individuals from Afghanistan, Iraq, and Yemen were recently picked up by the U.S. border patrol near Laredo, Texas. A November 2012 House Committee on Homeland Security report from the Oversight Sub-Committee revealed that “the U.S. Border Patrol regularly apprehends aliens from the 35 ‘special interest countries’ designated by our intelligence community as countries that could export individuals that could bring harm to our country in the way of terrorism.”

Between Fiscal Years 2006 and 2011, apprehensions of 1918 special interest aliens occurred at the nation’s Southwest border.

“The drug cartels will bring people into the country no matter who they are—for money,” explains Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX). “Everyone in the world knows that the border between the United States and Mexico is completely porous.” That includes an Obama administration that abets human trafficking—and a Commander-in Chief whose immigration agenda trumps any connect-the-dots commitment to national security. Pathetic.

One small town uses the Left's own playbook to fight Obama's orchestrated border chaos.

When President Obama began dumping busloads of newly arrived illegal aliens on small town America to force so-called immigration reform he probably didn’t expect residents of a small California city to take a heroic stand against his lawless assault on the nation’s immigration system.

But grassroots activists in Murrieta, California, near San Diego, have been using the Left’s own playbook against the Community-Organizer-in-Chief’s efforts to force an unprecedented loosening of the nation’s largely unenforced immigration laws. Last week the protesters used the tactics of civil disobedience by blocking federal authorities from bussing in hundreds of illegal immigrants who snuck into south Texas. The feds have vowed to don riot gear in order to transport the illegals to Murrieta but that has not happened yet.

The illegals turned back by angry crowds were bound for what federal authorities called a “housing facility,” but local residents say such a facility doesn’t exist in Murrieta.

Longtime Murrieta resident John Henry said it appeared federal officials intended to place the aliens in the local Border Patrol station, which has only five holding cells.

“There are no showers, and there’s only one toilet in each cell. There’s really no place to give them hot food and no beds. There’s nothing here for them–we literally don’t have any way to take care of these people.”

Henry added, “We additionally don’t have any places for these people to go after they are processed.”

Henry told Breitbart News that the illegals, unaccompanied minors and women from Central America, are being sent to Republican-supporting communities like his city to send those opposed to open borders a political message.

“The administration thinks that if it floods our streets, in small town America, they can force us into immigration reform,” he said. “These immigrants should not be here. The only reason that they are coming here is for political reasons.”

“This is a small town – it’s mostly conservative – and the federal government knows that. The main reason a lot of us are out here protesting is because we do not want these people being dumped into our small town where we do not have programs or the resources to take care of them properly.”

Henry and his fellow protesters have been attacked by left-wingers who prefer hurling epithets to answering arguments.

In a Huffington Post op-ed, commentator Raul A. Reyes smeared the protesters as “anti-immigrant.” The protests themselves were motivated by “racism and xenophobia” and constituted “a shameful, sickening display of anti-immigrant sentiment.”

Except there is no evidence the activists were motivated by anything other than disgust at the Obama administration’s failure to enforce federal law. Nor is there proof that the activists were “anti-immigrant.” Anti-illegal immigrant, sure, but that’s an altogether different thing.

A group calling itself the Tequila Party is demanding the activists be jailed for daring to protest.

California attorney Ruben Salazar, pro-amnesty activist Dee Dee Garcia Blase, and Nebraska attorney Shirl Mora James wrote a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder and FBI Director James Comey asking for an “outside investigation” of local politicians and law enforcement officials in Murrieta.

They accuse activists in Murrieta of being “homeland domestic terrorists (masquerading as patriots),” and claim that they were “obstructing federal law enforcement from performing their jobs and terrorizing small refugee immigrant children from Central America with racial slurs.”

Apparently civil disobedience is only acceptable when left-wingers do it.

Moreover, the Tequila Party doesn’t understand the meaning of the word refugee.

A refugee, under the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, a multilateral treaty that was ratified by the United States, is:

“A person who owing to a well-founded fear of being persecuted for reasons of race, religion, nationality, membership of a particular social group or political opinion, is outside the country of his nationality and is unable or, owing to such fear, is unwilling to avail himself of the protection of that country … ” [italics added]

Barring evidence of persecution under any of the five specific grounds, these people are in fact economic migrants, as opposed to refugees. The fact that life is less than optimal in countries like Honduras, Nicaragua, and El Salvador doesn’t make those who leave their countries to sneak into the U.S. legitimate refugees.

The chaos on the U.S.-Mexico border that is now being swamped by uninvited visitors has been a long time coming.

Obama and generations of leftist politicians before him have been using immigration to subvert the American system. In the 1960s the late Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) shepherded reform of that era’s immigration laws through Congress. The concept is simple: Flood America with people who don’t share Americans’ traditional philosophical commitment to the rule of law, limited government, and markets, in order to force changes in society.

It’s the Cloward-Piven Strategy of orchestrated crisis as applied to immigration policy.

In the Sixties, Marxist academics and activists Richard Cloward and Frances Fox Piven called upon activists to pack the welfare rolls in order to spread dependency, bankrupt the government, and cause uprisings against the capitalist system.

Overburdening government bureaucracies would cause “a profound financial and political crisis” that would unleash “powerful forces … for major economic reform at the national level,” they argued in their seminal 1966 Nation article.

Overwhelming local and state governments with illegal immigrants, who qualify for taxpayer-supplied benefits such as free health care, education, and housing aid, might make those governments so desperate that they throw their political support behind the kind of so-called comprehensive immigration reform that the Left favors. After all, when was the last time Congress refused a bailout to anybody?

Although the disorder at the border has been building over time, President Obama gave a green light to would-be illegal immigrants when he indicated he has no interest in enforcing U.S. immigration laws.

Meanwhile, local media reported late yesterday that no new arrivals are expected to fly into nearby San Diego for the rest of this week: “Murrieta police say Border Patrol officials notified them late Wednesday afternoon that there will be no flights of immigrants from Texas arriving in San Diego on Thursday or for the rest of the week.”

It’s a small, and likely temporary, victory.

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” President Barack Obama’s former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, once infamously stated. He never bothered to spell out the unspoken corollary to that appalling statement: And if there is no serious crisis available, manufacture one.

The American left has followed that pattern for generations. The left destroyed the nuclear family by incentivizing women to give birth out of wedlock. When out-of-wedlock births exploded, they used that as an excuse to elevate federal spending, elevate taxes and disestablish marriage between a man and a woman as a moral standard. The left crafted a health care crisis by instituting price and wage controls that led to employer-sponsored insurance, and then undercut that insurance with excessive regulation and easy lawsuits. They used elevating costs as an excuse to push Obamacare and elevate taxes.

Now, the left, under Obama, has crafted the mother of all crises: an influx of tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing America’s southern border. Some of these minors carry disease. Virtually all carry wounds, either physical or psychological, from their criminal coyote guides. That crisis is not Obama’s Hurricane Katrina, as some have speculated. Katrina was an act of God, and its botched handling the act of men. This entire situation is an act of Obama. And he couldn’t be happier as he watches frustrated Americans take to the streets in Murrieta, California, to protest his lawlessness.

Obama created this situation, and he certainly knows how to exploit it. Obama wants to campaign based on the suffering of these children. He wants to push for higher taxes based on their unequal economic status. He wants their eventual votes for the left. He wants the federal government to punish American citizens tired of watching their government abandon them.

It’s all part of the agenda.

Obama and the media maintain the absurd fiction that Obama was thunderstruck by this crisis.

Obama himself has assured the public that he wants all of the new arrivals sent home forthwith and that they were foolish to believe they could stay.
Foolish?

Four years ago, the Obama Justice Department sued the state of Arizona for daring to enforce federal immigration law, and sanctuary cities across the country remained unscathed. Two years ago, Obama declared that all illegal immigrants between the ages of 16 and 30 who had not committed criminal felonies — the so-called Dreamers — would remain in the country. This week, the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Arizona would have to hand out driver’s licenses to the Dreamers, and the city of Los Angeles announced it would no longer cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement in holding requested illegals for 48 hours after their jail terms expired.

Those desperate to come to America would be fools not to jump at the chance. And their dangerous decisions to send their own children across thousands of miles of desert in the company of likely drug cartel associates underscores their certainty: They’re willing to risk the lives of their children, knowing that so long as the children get to the border, Obama will legitimize them, and then, by extension, their entire families.

This, of course, is precisely what Obama wanted them to think. Now he has his crisis. And he’ll exploit it for everything it’s worth, no matter how much blood is spilled in the deserts of Mexico or the streets of Murrieta.

The president's two-faced game of decrying the border crisis while making it worse.

As the orchestrated chaos at America’s southern border remains unrelenting, President Obama is doing what he does best: ignoring another crisis in favor of fundraising. And despite that fundraising taking place in Texas, the state hardest hit by the onslaught of illegal alien children, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest insisted Monday that Obama had no intention of visiting the border. Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) was incensed. “President Obama needs a wakeup call — and visiting the border and seeing firsthand the severity of this ongoing crisis is that wakeup call,” he said in remarks prepared for airing on Senate floor.

It’s not going to happen, and even Democrats are beginning to get exasperated. On Sunday, Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-TX), whose congressional district sits on the U.S.-Mexican border, accused the White House of being late to the game. “With all due respect to the administration, they’re one step behind. They should have seen this coming a long time ago,” Cuellar told CNN’s Candy Crowley on “State of the Union.”

Actually they did, and not just recently. On January 29, 2014 an ad placed at the FedBizOpps.Gov website was looking to procure escort services for 65,000 Unaccompanied Alien Children (UACs). Contained in the same ad was a far greater indicator of the Obama administration’s ultimate intentions once that crisis developed. Whoever provided the escort services was also expected to transport “these juveniles to Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) shelters located throughout the continental United States.” That would be the ORR whose mission is to “provide people in need with critical resources to assist them in becoming integrated members of American society.”

In other the words, the administration was not only anticipating a crisis before one developed, it had seemingly decided that the massive influx of illegals would be categorized as “refugees.” Yesterday the United Nations got into the act, urging the administration to embrace that definition as a means of making thousands of illegals eligible for asylum, rather than sending them home. When asked whether the administration considered the current border assault a refugee crisis, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said it was “a humanitarian situation that requires urgent attention.”

Yet urgent attention is exactly what is lacking, and the administration is citing the William Wilberforce Trafficking Victims Protection Reauthorization Act of 2008 as the reason. Enacted by a Democratically-controlled Congress and signed by President Bush, the law offers additional protections to UACs who are not from Canada or Mexico. Those protections include an opportunity to appear at an immigration hearing, consult with an advocate, possibly retain counsel, and receive placement by the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which is tasked with placing the child “in the least restrictive setting that is in the best interest of the child.”

Unfortunately for Obama, another Democrat has challenged his interpretation of the statute. “That law already provides the administration with flexibility to accelerate the judicial process in times of crisis,” said Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) who helped craft the Act. “The administration should use that flexibility to speed up the system while still treating these children humanely, with compassion and respect.”

Again, it’s not going to happen, and Sundance at the Conservative Treehouse website nails down exactly why. He explains that the Obama administration’s strategy of telling the public one thing, and doing exactly the opposite behind the scenes, is in full swing. “In the foreground we will continue to see President Obama and fellow travelers say they are opposed to the influx and committed to stopping it,” he writes. “However, in the background they are giving specific instructions to the federal agencies to continue promoting the process and affirming the intent.”

Thus, as Fox News reports, Obama is “holding off on seeking legal changes to speed up the deportation process for illegal immigrant children.” Instead, the president is seeking a whopping $3.7 billion for housing, immigration judges, detention facilities, and legal aid, associated with latest influx of illegals. The AP lays out the details—and plays a devious game in the process. They note the largest allocations include $1.1 billion “for the Department of Homeland Security to help deter border-crossers and increase enforcement,” $433 million “for Customs and Border Protection to cover overtime costs and for additional facilities to detain unaccompanied children while they are in Border Patrol custody,” and $1.8 billion “to the Department of Health and Human Services for the care of unaccompanied children, including shelter and medical care.”

Note that the overwhelming amount of this spending is directed at maintaining a status quo that does nothing to address the ongoing assault on our borders. As for the level of seriousness, there is another $600 million dollar request in the package—for fighting wildfires in Western states. In the meantime, there is no timetable for speeding up the deportation process.

Yet note something far more important: last weekend, Immigration Customs and Enforcement (ICE) issued a calculating directive to its personnel. According to an internal ICE email obtained by the Center for Immigration Studies and shared with Breitbart News, usage of the term “UAC” is to be discontinued and replaced with “unaccompanied children.” The email goes even further. “The appropriate messaging on documents should be using the term : unaccompanied children all lower case. (Unless capitalizing would be grammatically correct),” the email states.

Less than a week later, the Associated Press has taken its cues, as the leftist impulse to control the narrative takes hold. That impulse was abetted to the point of absurdity by radical leftist Sally Kohn who contends the words “illegal immigrants,” or “illegals” are the equivalent of calling black Americans the n-word, and gay americans the f-word. “Today, most people find the n-word and the f-word incredibly offensive,” she explains. “Let’s hope that most if not all people will feel the same way about the words ‘illegals’ and ‘illegal immigrants’ in the not too distant future.”

As for the reality of speeding up the deportation process, Obama claims he will get to it, and the Republican House is reportedly working on an effort to change the 2008 law. But the president knows for certain the Democratically-controlled Senate that passed a comprehensive immigration reform bill last summer isn’t about to alienate its pro-amnesty constituency. A senior Democratic staffer in the Senate illuminated pre-ordained reality regarding Obama’s ostensible effort. “He can’t get it passed,” the staffer insisted.

And because Obama can’t get anything resembling an enforcement bill passed, the spending package is in jeopardy as well—which may be exactly what the president wants. That reality was inadvertently revealed by the Washington Post:

Republicans argue that Obama must stop the flow of illegal immigrants to the border and ensure that the entire border is secure before focusing on the tens of thousands who are already in detention facilities there…Democrats, meanwhile, say that the first step must be to provide more funding to pay for new detention facilities and legal services to work through the debilitating backlog of children who are already at the border. Providing an influx of money for detention centers and to pay for additional judges, several Democrats have argued, is more urgent than altering the 2008 law in terms of addressing the current crisis.

Such a stalemate aligns perfectly with a president far more interested in paying lip service to the nation’s problems than dealing with them, even as it allows him to once again paint Republicans as the obstructionist party for failing to embrace the “bigger picture” of comprehensive immigration reform.

As an added bonus, the president can get back to his fundraising. Fundraising that includes visits to Dallas and Austin, where he will be rubbing elbows with pro-amnesty Hollywood stars at events where ticket prices range from $5,000 to $32,400. One of those fundraisers will be at the Austin home of Mexican director Robert Rodriguez, whose movie “Machete” depicts the murders of people opposed to illegal immigration. Obama has even agreed to meet with Texas Governor Rick Perry on Wednesday in Dallas to discuss the current crisis.

In the meantime, the crisis continues unabated. Illegal immigrant children afflicted with tuberculosis, scabies, chickenpox and lice remain at Lackland Air Force base in Oklahoma, illegal alien criminals are being released in Virginia and Arizona, the ongoing protests in Murrieta, CA threaten to escalate, and a leaked DHS internal report from ICE reveals that only 0.1 percent of the Central American minors illegally entering the U.S. were deported in FY2013.

And amidst it all, the restrictions the Obama administration are attempting to impose on members of Congress and the media are astounding. The HHS is telling members of Congress visiting the immigration detention center at Lackland that they cannot take pictures, use recording devices, or interact with staff or children. On Thursday when the media’s tour begins, they will be subjected to the same restrictions.

The Media Research Center’s Brent Bozell offers the proper perspective on this administration’s efforts. “Imagine after Katrina that reporters are getting ready to go to New Orleans, and the Bush administration says to reporters, now one thing: no recording devices, no questions, no interacting with staff or children, no photos, and no interviews, but other than that you can cover Katrina,” he said yesterday on Fox’s “Your World with Neil Cavuto.” “The response would be that this is the statement of a dictatorship,” Bozell added.

This is indeed Obama’s Katrina moment with one giant difference: the same mainstream media that completely excoriated George W. Bush as indifferent at best, and racist at worst for flying above the city of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina remain appalling passive in the face of transparent insensitivity borne of nothing more than crass political calculation. “We’re not worried about those optics,” said White House spokesman Josh Earnest responding to a reporter who asked him if the Obama administration should be worried about how it will look for the president to be in Texas and avoid the border. Americans might ask themselves what kind of leader sees thousands of Third World children as “optics.” Or perhaps more accurately, political props for advancing a pro-amnesty agenda.

The bipartisan effort to reshape America.

Under the hot sun, sweating Hondurans trudge across Mexico headed for the United States and khaki-wearing hacks in comfortable D.C. digs pound out defenses of amnesty on their iPads. The men in the desert call the thing that they want “amnistía,” but its domestic defenders refuse to use the “A-word.”

To them it’s always immigration reform. But it’s not immigration that is being reformed; a word that comes from the Latin “reformare” which means to reshape.

It’s the United States of America that is being reformed and reshaped.

The consequences of that reformation are not only linguistic, but political. Amnesty’s reshaping of America will make conservative political positions untenable. That is why some establishment Republicans are pushing for amnesty. A political shift that will bury small government as thoroughly as the gold standard isn’t just to the advantage of the Democratic Party.

It’s also to their advantage.

Many assume that illegal alien amnesty means cheap votes for Democrats and cheap labor for Republicans. But that’s only partly true.

There are powerful men in both parties who believe that the United States must “reform” to be more like Europe. That it must have a stronger central government and more controlling social policies.

Amnesty is an opportunity to reshape national politics by eliminating opposition to everything from Common Core (support for Common Core in California is at 77% among Latinos and 57% among whites) to Global Warming crackdowns (90% of Latinos want government action) and nationalized health care (74% support “public option” government health care).

Super-Amnesty, many times bigger than the last amnesty, will kill conservative politics. The Tea Party will become a historical footnote. Taxes will go on rising. Government will grow unstoppably bigger.

There will still be a Republican Party. It will support nationalizing health care and expanding the welfare state. Think of today’s Democratic Party. That will be tomorrow’s Republican Party. Pick a radical left-wing party that barely registers on the polls. That will be tomorrow’s Democratic Party.

Articles that claim to be making a conservative case for amnesty are taking a left turn down a dead end street. There can be no conservative case for amnesty because there is no such thing as a conservative case for a policy that will not have a conservative outcome.

It’s possible to make a conservative case for just about anything by breaking conservatism down to a handful of supposed principles such as “free enterprise” or “stronger families” and then overlaying those principles on a policy.

That same technique can be used to make a conservative case for nationalizing health care or child slavery. The piecemeal principles argument is fine for constructing talking points, but it’s also cheap sophistry. It can be used to prove anything which means that it also proves nothing.

The only meaningful argument for a policy is based on outcomes.

If the outcome of a conservative policy is more liberalism, it was never a conservative policy to begin with. That is the simplest and most reliable acid test of any “conservative” policy agenda.

Will Policy X put the country on a more liberal or conservative track? That is a question that Republican advocates of amnesty don’t like answering. Their conservative case for amnesty is all about stronger families and free enterprise; they don’t want to talk about what the United States will actually look like after a generation of majority support for every possible big government gimmick.

72% of Hispanics in the US believe that the system favors the wealthy and that the government should intervene to reduce the gap between the rich and the poor. 60% believe that hard work does not guarantee success. The majority want higher taxes over tax cuts and spending more while raising taxes to pay for it.

And for those holding out hope on the social conservative front, the majority supports gay marriage and opposes abortion by only a narrow margin.

These aren’t racial or ethnic differences. They are political culture differences. Immigrants from brutal totalitarian left-wing dictatorships, like Cuba or the USSR, often lean to the right. However immigrants from countries that lean to the left without being giant death camps, tend to also lean to the left.

The Swedish immigrants that I’ve met think that gun control is so common sense that only a complete maniac would oppose it. Mexico has universal health care and no matter how badly it works, Mexican immigrants think that it’s only natural that the government should have a public option. China spends vast sums of money on a public education system. Chinese immigrants expect the US to do the same.

Immigrants who don’t leave a home country with the understanding that it is completely broken and should only be mentioned as a cautionary tale will support repeating those same tragic errors here.

The Mexican Constitution specifies a minimum wage, unionization and low-cost housing. Those aren’t unusual things in Latin American constitutions. They may exist more in theory than in reality, but they are a baseline expectation.

Amnesty advocates claim that legalization will assimilate illegal aliens. It’s hard to tell if they’re kidding themselves or us. They will be “assimilated” by the same left-wing social system that they have already been living in. They will be assimilated by public schools and state universities, by community activist groups and media outlets and by all the other arms of the Democratic Party and its left-wing satellites.

Republican advocates of amnesty speak of this country as a beacon of freedom. And they’re right. That beacon of freedom has been offered to immigrants around the world. And it is in their interest and ours that the beacon remain lit by opposing a Super-Amnesty of illegal aliens that would drown out its light.

The American culture of freedom is already under siege. Immigration should serve America’s culture of freedom. Anything else would be unfair to Americans and to the generations of future immigrants.

There can be no conservative case for Super-Amnesty unless it can be argued that it will make the country more conservative, freer and less taxed than it is today. Instead the numbers show that Super-Amnesty will create overwhelming support for government power, less freedom and higher taxes.

America will become California.

Super-Amnesty is radical social change in a can. Conservatives don’t believe in radical social change. Amnesty supporters insist that conservatives should lay out a policy alternative to mass amnesty, but the very idea that massive social problems have easy solutions is an intellectual error of the left.

Conservatives accept that social problems arise from human frailty, rather than fundamental inequities. We do not believe in push-button solutions to social problems. Instead we affirm that in maintaining our ideals despite human frailties, we will become a better nation.

Illegal aliens will always exist because there will be people on both sides of the border who will selfishly break the law, harming themselves and others. The solution to this social problem is not to reject the law, abandon borders and citizenship, but to affirm these things in the face of their violation.

We do not fight theft by rejecting ownership. Instead we defend the value of human labor. We do not stop killing by making excuses for murderers, but by championing the value of human life. We do not protect marriage by redefining it so that it means nothing, but by recommitting to the family. And we do not end violations of the border by watering down American citizenship, but by strengthening it.

Making America more Socialist can never be a conservative policy. Authentic conservatism is not misled by talking points that speak of conservative principles.

It accepts nothing less than a conservative outcome.

A grim example of the law of unintended consequences.

Last week, the lawlessness of Obama’s non-deportation policy came home to roost when Homeland Security (DHS) estimated 60,000 “unaccompanied alien children” were expected to enter the country illegally this year. The figures have since gone up to 90,000, which is more than a ten-fold increase from 2011. Unsurprisingly, according to interviews with those caught, the news waves are directly related to Obama’s rolling orders to DHS to ramp up amnesty efforts wherever possible. Yesterday, Senator Cornyn of Texas called Obama’s continued amnesty push an “extremely dangerous incentive for children” and “a painful example of the law of unintended consequences.”

Stories have been ongoing of illegal alien children, teens and adults being flown around the Border States in search of any government facility that may have available space. After it was reported last week that Greyhound stations in Phoenix were becoming drop-off points for detained-illegals flown in from border-checkpoints in Texas, Arizona’s Governor Brewer fired off a letter to the President asking him to end his “unconscionable policy.”

Considering the depth and scale of Obama’s subversion of our immigration laws, the prospect of thousands more children and teens illegally entering the country won’t likely change his approach to border security any time soon. After all, as it was revealed last December, DHS has actually been directly and proactively facilitating human-trafficking for quite some time.

In the case of U.S. v. Nava-Martinez, border agents busted a repeat-felon attempting to smuggle a 10-year old El Salvadorian girl across a checkpoint in Texas later discovering that the operation was organized by the girl’s mother, an illegal alien living in Virginia. But when the agents contacted DHS officials they refused to arrange for her arrest. Instead, according to Judge Andrew Hanen of the Southern District Court of Texas, DHS “successfully complet(ed) the mission of the criminal conspiracy” by flying the child to her mother in Virginia at taxpayer expense.

The order issued by Judge Hanen is a crushing rebuke of Obama’s DHS. In it he warns that such immoral and illegal policies would dramatically increase the number of minors attempting to make the dangerous trip across the border. With DHS’s new estimates and the huge problems hitting the Border States, we can now see how right the good judge was.

In just the previous month alone, Judge Hanen had seen four cases of “DHS completing [a] criminal conspiracy… by delivering [minors caught at the border] to the custody of parents illegally living in the United States.” In none of the cases were the children detained or the illegal alien parent deported.

Besides the concerns that DHS’s facilitation of illegal activities works to decrease border agents’ morale and helps fund drug cartels (the chief operators of human smuggling rings), the remarkably prescient judge had noted that such a policy “undermines the deterrent effect the laws may have and inspires others to commit further violations.” The consequences of this undermining effect we’re now seeing and hopefully it’s becoming clear to the elite and media classes just how dangerous it is to play politics with immigration enforcement.

Since the first amnesty in 1986, the illegal alien population has ballooned from 3 million to 12 million with most of that increase coming in the last decade. Obama’s first administrative amnesty in 2012, the “Deferred Action for Children Arrivals” program, applied specifically to children and young adults, which, along with further mini-amnesties since, has acted as an announcement to the people of Mexico and Central America that the US is not at all serious about its border security.

Who knows what the next round of figures from DHS will be, but it’s possible they’ll be double or even triple the recent estimates. The same goes for deaths at the border, which have already been on the increase since Obama started his amnesty-push. As Judge Hanen devastatingly wrote at the close of his order, if DHS persists with such a policy, “more children are going to be harmed, and DHS will be partly responsible because it encourages this kind of Russian roulette.” It’s now time for Obama and Democrats to finally consider the consequences of their policies, which harm citizens on both sides of the border, and turn off the amnesty magnet.

TRANSCRIPT:

I’m Andrew Klavan and this is the Revolting Truth.

It’s time to take an hysterical and panicky look at fake global warming. Fake global warming is one of the most serious fake problems not actually facing our nation today. According to smarmy billionaire Al Gore, we must take useless and expensive actions immediately or the polar ice caps will be completely melted by two thousand and thirteen… which will be catastrophic when last year arrives.

And the polar bears — oh, the polar bears! Studies reveal that over the last twenty years, as computer models of the climate have progressively damaged computer models of their habitat, the polar bear population has steadily increased. But that’s only in real life! In the computer models, the poor creatures are dropping like flies.

Let’s examine the distorted facts. Between the years 1950 and 2000, the earth’s temperature increased approximately nine tenths of a degree Centigrade. Over the exact same period, the price of butter in Morris County New Jersey rose from 77 cents a pound to nearly four dollars. According to climate change logic, this means that if we give government the power to lower the price of butter in Morris County, the temperature should once again sink back to the levels of the 1950’s. And weren’t the 50‘s a fine old time! Who wouldn’t want those temperatures back again?

I realize there are some superstitious troglodytes who don’t believe in science. They insist we have to go on powering our country with oil and gas instead of using sustainable energy from the holy Vitraya Ramunong tree from that great, great movie Avatar. We’ve explained to them that 97 percent of scientists believe in global warming, but it means nothing to them, even though the number 97 percent has been scientifically selected as the most panic-inducing random number available.

But fake global warming is not just a fake problem for a computer generated future. Even as we speak, it’s creating a pervasive and irritating whining noise that sounds almost exactly like the President of the United States. This must be stopped.

I’m Andrew Klavan with the Revolting Truth.

Inside the conflict that threatens to tear a nation apart.

As mayhem in the Ukraine continues, and the death toll mounts, threatening a possible civil war, a heartwarming story emerges from this Ukrainian tragedy. The story involves Israeli humanitarian aid to injured protestors in Kiev. Ten Ukrainians wounded in clashes were airlifted, and brought to Israel’s Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot. Valeriya Babchuk, a Kaplan Medical Center doctor, on vacation in her native Kiev, volunteered to provide emergency treatment to Ukrainian activists being shot at the “Maidan,” or Independence Square, in Kiev, Ukraine’s capital.

Jeremy Borovitz, 26, a Jewish Service Corps Fellow with the American-Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC) in Kiev was on hand in Philadelphia to relate the story surrounding the “Maidan.” He was hosted by Louis Balcher, the regional representative of Kaplan Medical Center. Borovitz, a prospective rabbinic student at the Pardes Institute in Jerusalem, stopped in the Delaware Valley on his way to Israel from Kiev, where he spent a full year. In Kiev, he was involved in many projects including the “Our Shtetl” project, taking him to small villages and, with local Ukrainian non-Jewish students, made short documentary films about the Jewish history of the area.

The situation in the Ukraine has left an indelible impression on the young Borovitz, who worked closely with Ukrainian students seeking a freer, more Western-oriented state for their people. In the meantime, Russian President Putin reduced tension by suggesting that the referendum being staged by pro-Russia separatists in parts of Eastern Ukraine should be postponed. The separatists are seeking to rush the referendum, which they hope will result in an approval for the region to join Russia, much like what happened in Crimea earlier in March of this year.

It was apparent to Putin that open and unmitigated Russian support for the referendum could trigger additional and harsher EU and US sanctions. Moscow is, however, still opposed to holding presidential elections in Ukraine on May 25, 2014. USA Today reported (May 7, 2014) that “A Ukrainian candidate for president from the country’s restive Donetsk region said that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s pledge to pull his forces back from the Ukrainian border is ‘very good news,’ and a sign that diplomacy may have a chance.”

Putin would like to see a change in the Ukrainian constitution that will allow for federalism in Ukraine. This would give the regions greater powers, and provide Russia with increased influence over eastern Ukraine, and ultimately over the whole of Ukraine.

Ukrainians in the rest of the country and in particular in the western part of Ukraine have rejected the Russian over-lordship and seek closer ties with the West. To confirm this assertion, this reporter asked Jeremy Borovitz whether the demonstrators at the “Maidan” were genuine democrats who want to see a democratic, Western-oriented Ukraine, or were they simply demonstrating for jobs and better living conditions?

Borovitz observed that “The demonstrations at the ‘Maidan’ began with university students expressing their desire to be part of the West, and pushed for European integration. However, after the students were attacked by the police, it became something much more involved. It morphed into a movement that was simply yearning for some sort of change, for a better government that cares about its people. It swelled as the violence increased, with people simply taking a stand against the injustice they felt was taking place. It was a plea for honesty in government, for a people tired of living in a place that was simply Soviet Union redux, rife with corruption and fear. I went to Maidan a few times, and I was amazed at the sense of community that truly existed there among Ukrainians, Russians, Jews, Belarussians, Roma…it was a civil society created by individuals in a country where civil society has fallen short of the mark.”

Joseph Puder (JP): Is the Svoboda Party in the Ukraine anti-Semitic in nature or merely ultra-nationalist, and did President Vladimir Putin have a point in characterizing the demonstrators in the Maidan as anti-Semitic hooligans?

Jeremy Borovitz (JB): The Svoboda party certainly has anti-Semitic tendencies, as does Right Sector. However, they have been extremely open since the protest began, and have tried to make entreaties to the Jewish community. No anti-Semitic acts or comments have been tolerated since the protests began. In the end, they are much more anti-Russian than anti-Semitic. That being said, they are not as popular as they seem (under 10%, if you go by presidential polls), and nationalist parties seem much stronger in other parts of Europe. They also do not play a large role in the current government, which has Jews holding high positions, including the Deputy Prime Minister Volodia Groisman, whose father lives in Israel.

Putin was trying to paint all the protestors as anti-Semitic for his own political purposes. Many Jews have been involved in the protests, many were in leadership roles. There was even a Jewish self-defense brigade, whose leader served in the IDF and wears a Kippah. I believe that Putin has been the one to spark most of the anti-Semitic incidents, desiring to paint the protests as the work of right-wing nationalists being responsible, in order to sway world Jewry to his side.

JP: What has been the Israeli angle in the story you described?

JB: Israel has been extraordinary in the willingness to take on 10 injured protestors and treat them in Israel. Of the 10, five have already been sent home with a clean bill of health. Kaplan Medical Center treated the injured Ukrainian protestors without any promise of future payment, albeit, the bill has since been paid by Israelis, Americans and Canadians. Four of the protestors arrived unable to walk. Only one is still in a wheelchair, and even though Ukrainian doctors put his chances at 10%, Israeli doctors now say it is 50/50 that he will be able to eventually walk on his own. A group of over 100 Israeli volunteers have cared for the injured men and their families who came with them.

JP: Where do you see the Ukraine in the next few years, and is the Jewish community fully integrated in Ukrainian life?

JB: I hope that Ukraine, in five years, will be free, independent, secure, and a part of the global community. However, I fear that the current Russian aggression, which is being met by very little or only symbolic resistance from the West, will severely harm Ukraine in both the short term and long term. I believe that Putin will go as far as he thinks he can get away with, and as long as he is unchecked by the U.S. and Europe, he will continue his westward march.

The Jewish community is very much integrated into Ukrainian life. Many Jews were active in the protest movement, and are involved in politics, the arts, business, etc. This, however, is not to say that there is no anti-Semitism in Ukraine. There is. But I do not feel that the level is higher than in most European countries, and certainly it is less than in places like France. I wore my Kippah on the streets of Kiev, which I could not do in other places in Europe.

Borovitz, like many others, fears that if Russian aggression goes unchecked, the Ukrainian tragedy will spread elsewhere. Yet, the indomitable spirit of the young Ukrainian protestors seeking a free, open and tolerant society may overcome the odds facing them.

Hours after Ukraine’s acting president Oleksandr Turchynov announced an “anti-terrorist operation” against the numerous pro-Russian uprisings that have taken place in at least nine cities, government forces engaged about 30 armed militants at Kramatorsk airport, just south of the city of Slovyansk, approximately 100 miles from the Russian border. The exchange prompted a warning from Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev. “I will be brief: Ukraine is on the brink of civil war, it’s frightening,” he was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.

The move is part of an overall counteroffensive aimed at reclaiming control of the eastern part of the country, following the takeover of official government buildings by pro-Russian separatists in at least nine cities. According to eyewitnesses, Slovyansk itself was being surrounded by Ukrainian troops, backed by armored personnel carriers and two helicopters. Pro-Russian forces have had effective control of the city since last Saturday.

What happened during the fighting is largely unclear, but Russian media sources claim between four and 11 militants were killed when Ukrainian troops stormed the airfield, while Yury Zhadobin, coordinator of a pro-Russian defense force, claimed two people were slightly injured and were taken to a hospital. The Ukrainian government claimed there were no casualties at all, but that they had taken an unspecified number of prisoners. Gen. Vasyl Krutov, Ukraine’s security services anti-terrorist unit chief, spoke outside the airport, saying his men had repelled an attack by men in green uniforms who had attempted to storm the facility earlier that afternoon.

After the standoff, hundreds of locals surround the airport, fueled by rumors that Ukrainian forces were getting ready to attack the city of Kramatorsk itself. Some attempted to enter the airport facilities, prompting Ukrainian forces to fire warning shots. When Krutov appeared outside to defuse tensions, he was attacked by the crowd.

Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted a pro-Russian militiaman who said Ukrainian troops had seized the airfield, but Kramatorsk remained under their control. “We have, in fact, been pushed out of the airport, but the town is under our control,” the unidentified militiaman told the agency. “We won’t let anyone in.”

President Turchynov explained the reason for the move on his website. “The aim of these actions is to protect people,” he said. “Apart from Russian special forces and terrorists, there’s hundreds of thousands of innocent Ukrainian people deceived by Russian propaganda, and that is why we will take any needed anti-terrorist actions prudently and responsibly.”

Turchynov also addressed the Ukrainian parliament in Kiev. “I just got a call from the Donetsk region: Ukrainian special forces have liberated the airport in the city of Kramatorsk from terrorists,” he told lawmakers. “I’m convinced that there will not be any terrorists left soon in Donetsk and other regions and they will find themselves in the dock – this is where they belong.”

Another troop buildup is going on near the city of Izyum, which is close to the border of the Kharkiv and Donetsk provinces in the east, 32 miles northwest of Slovyansk. An Izyum official who requested anonymity said the city has been used by Ukrainian troops as a feeding and fueling area since their arrival beginning last weekend. An Associated Press reporter claimed to have seen at least 14 armored personnel carriers with Ukrainian flags, along with helicopters and military vehicles, stationed 24 miles north of Slovyansk. Additional military equipment was also nearby, as were at least seven busloads of government troops wearing black military fatigues. “We are awaiting the order to move on Slovyansk,” said a soldier identified only by his first name of Taras.

In the city of Donetsk, Mayor Alexander Lukyanchenko begged pro-Russian forces not to follow through on their threat to seize city offices. “If the city authorities are paralyzed, it would be to the detriment of all inhabitants of the city,” he told reporters.

The move by the Ukrainian military follows an ultimatum issued Monday by Turchynov that was promptly ignored by pro-Russian militants. That ultimatum then became an offer to hold a national referendum to determine Ukraine’s future, followed by yet another offer for a peace-keeping intervention undertaken by U.N. forces.

Unsurprisingly, Ukraine and Russia had completely different takes on the escalating tension. “We have to tell the Ukrainians the truth: the Russian Federation is waging a real war against Ukraine in the east, in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions in particular,” said ex-prime minister and presidential candidate Yulia Tymoshenko, who also called on the West to “recognize Russia’s aggression against eastern Ukraine as a war.” Ukrainian First Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Yarema echoed that assessment, saying Kiev had “evidence that those people occupying Slovyansk and Kramatorsk right now are servicemen of the Russian 45th Airborne Regiment.” Ukrainian security forces also claimed that a Russian foreign intelligence agent named Igor Strelkov, who had helped coordinate the seizure of Crimea, was part of those leading the resistance in Slovyansk.

Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, dismissed the allegations altogether. Putin himself called the military maneuvers “unconstitutional,” demanding an international crackdown in response. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov insisted Kiev was being contradictory. “You can’t send in tanks and at the same time hold talks,” he contended. “The use of force would sabotage the opportunity offered by the four-party negotiations in Geneva.” Those talks, scheduled to take place tomorrow, involve the Russians, the US, the European Union and Ukrainian officials. In the interim, the EU and the US are ostensibly considering widening sanctions against the Russians.

Or perhaps not. While the Obama administration is reportedly ready to up the ante, the EU is less enthusiastic, due to the reality that stronger sanctions would threaten an already weak economic recovery. Thus, while the US may suggest targeting Russian economic sectors such as financial services and energy, the EU prefers an expansion of individual asset freezes and travel bans. Without EU support, any additional sanctions by the US would have minimal effect. “The level of trade between the US and Russia directly is quite limited,” said Simon Mandel, vice president for emerging Europe equity sales at Auerbach Grayson & Co. “Whatever sanctions the US comes out with, unless the Chinese government or the EU are willing to support them, they will still have a minimal impact on the Russian government.”

Gary Greenberg, who oversees about $785 million in emerging-market stocks at Hermes, believes the latest move by Ukraine greatly accrues to Russian interests. “Russia is in an excellent bargaining position before the start of talks,” he contended. Having provocateurs in Ukraine or having the Ukrainian government forces start shooting puts Russia in much stronger position in its negotiating dance with Europe and the U.S. This is part of their strategy.”

It is a strategy underscored by a U.N. human rights report that contended ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine have falsely claimed to be under assault to justify Russian intervention. “Although there were some attacks against the ethnic Russian community, these were neither systematic nor widespread,” the report stated. “Photographs of the Maidan protests, greatly exaggerated stories of harassment of ethnic Russians by Ukrainian nationalist extremists, and misinformed reports of them coming armed to persecute ethnic Russians in Crimea, were systematically used to create a climate of fear and insecurity that reflected on support to integration of Crimea into the Russian Federation.”

The report further noted that during the Crimean referendum, there were “credible allegations” of harassment, arbitrary arrest and torture targeting non-supporters of the referendum, as well as “many accounts of vote rigging.”

It was blasted by Russian officials. “One gets the impression that the report was fabricated to correspond with conclusions formed in advance,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

In the meantime, 40,000 Russian military troops, replete with tank columns and fighter jets, remain based just outside Ukraine’s border. The situation is on a knife-edge and a wrong move by either party could ignite a deadly showdown.

The Iranian takeover of OPEC begins.

A few days after the Obama administration signed the nuclear deal with the Islamist state of Iran, after the easing of sanctions on the ruling cleric and Iranian authorities began to take off, the Mullahs initiated their first hegemonic ambition to reclaim and regain its No.2 position in OPEC, threatening to trigger an oil price war if the other 12 countries oppose Iran’s plan. In addition, Iran has put forward a candidate for the position of OPEC secretary general, considered to be the voice of the OPEC organization between meetings.

If the next time you stopped to fill up your car at a gas station, or to buy any other product, and you notice a sudden increase in prices, this can be attributed to the tireless efforts of the Obama administration to start lifting sanctions on Iran, easing pressure on the nation and integrating the Islamists of Iran into the international community, legitimizing them, giving them credibility, calling them rational actors, and pushing for the recent nuclear deal with the ruling cleric in the Iranian regime.

Last week, ahead of the upcoming OPEC meeting, Iran threatened to trigger a price war in the global oil markets. Iranian authorities warned OPEC’s 12 members that Tehran will ratchet up its oil output, no matter what the consequences would be, in an attempt to gain its former influential position. Bijan Zangeneh, Iran’s Oil Minister, said before going into the closed meetings that “we will not give up our rights on this issue.” The sanctions, accumulated through many years in the international community, reduced Iran’s leverage to disrupt and control the world economy through managing oil prices. However, the recent agreement with President Obama gave the Iranian Ayatollah and leaders a freedom to more aggressively reclaim and reassert their Islamist ambitions in the region and on the international scale.

There is a special quota assigned for each main oil exporter at OPEC. Iranian leaders stated that they will not comply with that quota. This will result in a disruption in supply and demand, which will ultimately create uncertainty in the market and lead to the rising of oil prices. For industrial countries, this will affect the prices of many other goods, because oil is used as a primary source for fuel. If Iran does not respect individual targets of oil sales in the global market and the quotas of OPEC members, Tehran’s attempts can definitely result in oil glut. In addition, this will lead to an increase in geopolitical tensions in the region and particularly among OPEC members.

An adviser to Iran’s oil minister, Mehdi Hosseini, was previously quoted in the Financial Times as saying that the Iranian government is developing a form of contract that could change the current system of buyback contracts, which currently do not permit foreign companies to book reserves or take equity stakes in Iranian oil, gas, or other projects. This can be viewed as a considerable increase in Iran’s growing power and leverage, which has previously been exposed to little investment in its oil and gas fields due to the international sanctions and pressure.

The primary reason that brought Iranian leaders to the negotiating table was the very sanctions that have accumulated over the past years by the international community and other US administrations. By the conciliatory and submissive stance that the Obama administration is taking towards Iranian and Islamist authorities, and by the easing of sanctions, the Ayatollahs have viewed America’s recent fragile position and the recent nuclear deal as a freehand to threaten the global economy, regain its no.2 position in OPEC, and increase its hegemonic ambitions in the region, particularly towards Israel. Empowered by the temporary nuclear agreement that was reached two weeks ago, Iranian leaders are aiming to increase their oil sale from nearly 2.5 million barrels a day to 4 million barrels.

Obama promised and pushed for a deal— beside the secret deals and talks with the Ayatollahs— arguing that Iranian leaders are rational actors, and if the international community eases the sanctions and trusts the Islamic Republic of Iran, this would be the most efficient deal to get Tehran to reciprocate, since there is a “moderate” cleric in power. But anyone who has studied the political structure of Iran closely would be cognizant of the fact that there is no fundamental differences between Iran’s political spectrum (reformists like Khatami, moderates like Rouhani, and hardliners like Ahmadinejad) when it comes to pursuing the regime’s Islamist revolutionary ideals; including obtaining nuclear weapons, supporting terrorists organizations, wiping Israel off of the world map, denying the Holocaust, and spreading their Islamist ideology across the world by force.

In addition, the final say rests in the hand of the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has clearly declared his denial of the Holocaust, his antagonism towards the United States and Israel, and his ambitions for the world to finally be an Islamist state under the rule of Allah. In fact, recently, Khamenei called Israel a “rabid dog,” adding, “Israeli officials cannot be called humans. They are like animals.” He furthermore called the United States a state criminal. All politicians and Ayatollahs in Iran support the current hegemonic and Islamist ambitions of the regime, with the Supreme Leader in charge of foreign policy.

The recent activities after lessening sanctions indicate that efforts by the Islamists in Iran to regain their influence economically— by controlling the oil market— and geopolitically— by further supporting and funding terrorist groups. Thanks to President Obama’s lessening sanctions on Iran, and his blocking of the bipartisan sanctions on the nation, Iran’s increasing control of OPEC’s main decisions and increasing influence in the global oil market is essentially handing over power and leverage to the Ayatollahs. If the current status continues, the United States will soon find itself on the other side of the spectrum, the weak position, in which it would have to struggle to bring the Iranian regime to the negotiating table, bargaining and probably accepting Iran’s demands, along with its hegemonic and nuclear ambitions in order to avoid Tehran’s threats and plans to significantly disrupt the oil market.

How one California city will help big-monied financiers make a bundle by confiscating property.

Once again, California is burnishing its reputation as the nation’s premiere location for oppressive government. In a 4-3 vote on September 11, the Richmond City Council approved a measure whereby the city would use the government power of eminent domain to seize hundreds of “underwater” mortgages. After seizing the mortgages, the city would offer the banks what it considers a fair market value for them. In turn, homeowners would be granted a new loan with lower monthly payments aimed at keeping those owners in their houses. Lenders have filed lawsuits to keep the plan from proceeding.

The Council set up a Joint Powers Authority aimed at bringing additional cities into the program, but two that had expressed interest, San Bernadino, CA and North Las Vegas, NV, backed off when they encountered stiff opposition from mortgage lenders and realtors. The first lawsuit against the plan was filed by Wells Fargo, acting as the trustee in the litigation for dozens of investment entities. That case was dismissed by US District Judge Charles Breyer on September 16. In his ruling, Breyer explained the case was about “future events that may never occur,” because the City Council had yet to officially enact their plan. If they do, the suit, along with others, will undoubtedly be re-filed.

The Council held another vote on September 17 in an attempt to continue moving forward. Despite another 4-3 approval, the Council was forced to concede that state law required them to have a super majority 5-2 vote, plus court approval in order to legitimize their efforts. Thus the program known as the Richmond Community Action to Restore Equity and Stability remains in administrative limbo.

Despite the setback, Mayor Gayle McLaughlin and the Council continue to argue that the city needs to use eminent domain to seize 624 mortgages they contend are in danger of foreclosure, insisting that such foreclosures would adversely affect remaining property values and threaten neighborhood stability. When they began implementing their efforts in late July, the city attempted to buy the mortgages at steep discounts, and they threatened lenders with eminent domain seizures if they refused to sell by August 14. “After years of waiting for a comprehensive fix, we’re stepping into the void with a local principal reduction program,” said Mayor McLaughlin at the time. Stepping in with a Soprano-like shakedown is a more accurate assessment.

The seizure plan was the brainchild of Mortgage Resolution Partners (MRP), a private firm who continues to aid Richmond in this blatant abuse of power. MRP plans to raise the money the city needs to buy the mortgages, and recruit buyers for the mortgages the city seizes. If they manage pull it off, Richmond will profit from each sale they make, and MRP will garner a $4,500 fee for each mortgage it helps refinance.

According to the Credit Union Times, the troubled mortgages being targeted were for properties in “working class and lower class neighborhoods.” Yet CNN Money reveals that Richmond “has targeted mortgages with balances averaging $370,000″ and some are “much pricier than that,” including homes bought for over a million dollars.

MRP chairman Steven Gluckstern contends the city is being forced to consider eminent domain because previous offers to buy the mortgages–at the aforementioned discounts–were rejected by the lenders. “If we could do this without going through this contentious process, we would,” he said. In other words, give us what we want, at a price we want–or we’ll try to take it anyway.

The lenders’ side of this story is clear. First and foremost, they consider any seizure made under the dubious auspices of eminent domain unconstitutional. They also debunk some of the city’s claims. In court documents, lenders revealed that Richmond was targeting performing mortgages and homeowners who were not in imminent danger of default. Lenders also explained that if homeowners do default, they are willing to help them with loan modifications, as they have already done in the past.

Another inconvenient reality for Richmond and MRP is the fact that home values in the city rose 20 percent last year with a similar rise projected for this year. In other words, the market is correcting itself without government interference.

Diana Dykstra, president and CEO of the California Credit Union League (CCUL) put this entire effort in the proper perspective. “Housing prices go up, housing prices go down,” she said. “Now every time there is a market correction should a homeowner be able to run to their elected officials to get their loan principal reduced?”

The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) wants no part of these pernicious efforts. The agency, which regulates mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, announced in August that it would instruct those entities to “limit, restrict or cease business activities” in any jurisdiction using eminent domain to seize mortgages. At the time, Fannie Mae Chief Executive Timothy J. Mayopoulos noted that invoking eminent domain to seize mortgages “has the potential to unsettle investors in mortgage securities.”

There is more than a little irony attached to that statement. Richmond, like countless cities across the nation were victims of the housing meltdown that was amply aided and abetted by the Democrat-controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Both lenders played a giant role in that crisis when they authorized increasingly flexible criteria for loan-making and then purchased the resulting loans. The flexible criteria were engendered by another Democrat creation, the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 that essentially turned owning a home into an affirmative action program, forcing banks to make questionable loans to minorities under the auspices of eliminating racial discrimination in lending. When it all blew up in 2008, the American taxpayer bailed out Fannie and Freddie to the tune of $187 billion.

Pushing the premise that the bailout was a good idea, CNNMoney contends that taxpayers may soon see a profit on that “investment.” Yet as the LA Times reveals, Fannie and Freddie have been avoiding potential long-term losses amounting to billions of dollars by delaying the implementation of new accounting methods. Those methods would require them to write off a larger number of non-performing mortgages. They have been allowed to delay the implementation of those accounting methods until 2015–by the FHFA.

Like the taxpayer bailout of Fannie and Freddie, the attempt to implement eminent domain in Richmond, CA is another testament to the dubious machinations of government officials more than willing to kick the rule of law to the curb if it interferes with their aspirations, and those of their well-connected friends. Even now, Richmond is attempting to partner with other cities that are also exploring the idea of seizing that which does not belong to them, in a manner that bears a striking similarity to the practices of a Third World totalitarian autocracy.

One of the primary reasons America has prospered while much of the Southern Hemisphere has struggled–despite being settled by the same groups of people–is due to the reverence for private property this country has enjoyed for more than two centuries. If that right is threatened, America will indeed be “fundamentally transformed.” Fatally and irreparable transformed.
