Throughout the Muslim world, from Morocco to Nigeria to Indonesia — and even occasionally in Western Europe and North America — Christians are being harassed, tortured, and murdered. Reuters reported in January 2012 that a hundred million Christians were being persecuted, while a few years earlier Britain’s Secret Service, M16, put the number closer to two hundred million. In November 2012 German Chancellor Angela Merkel called Christianity “the most persecuted religion worldwide,” a statement that elicited condemnation from many world leaders. The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe estimates that a Christian is killed for his faith every five minutes.

What is the reason for such atrocity? By any measure, the persecution of Christians is one of the dramatic stories of our time. So why is it ignored? Raymond Ibrahim, a fluent speaker of Arabic and a fellow at the David Horowitz Freedom Center, answers these questions and explains both the sources of Islamic violence and the infirmities that cripple the West in his new book Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians.

History provides a large part of the answer. Islam, from its beginnings, in contrast to Christianity, promised its followers worldly success and prosperity. From Mohammed’s first raids, down through the centuries of conquests that followed, Islam has been a religion of victors vanquishing victims. Contemporary Muslim lands in the Middle East and Africa include what were once great centers of Christendom, such as Jerusalem, Alexandria, Damascus, Antioch, and Constantinople. Lest anyone forget, imperialism is not a Western invention.

Having conquered vast territory, Muslims then went on to dominate it by imposing the cruelties of Sharia law and dhimmitude, both of which reduce “infidels,” non-Muslims, to servile positions. Ibrahim provides examples of brutal conditions under Muslim rule during these early conquests when, “according to one medieval Muslim historian, over the two year course of a particularly ruthless Christian persecution campaign, some 30,000 churches were burned or pillaged in Egypt and Syria alone.” Under the Abbasid rule in A.D. 936, the Church of the Resurrection in Jerusalem, believed to have been built atop the tomb of Christ, was burned down. Nearly a century later, Caliph Hakim bi-Amr Allah (996-1021) ordered the dismantling of what was left of the church, including the digging up of its foundations, in addition to the destruction of “Golgotha and the church of Saint Constantine as well as all the sacred grave stones. They even tried to dig up the graves and wipe out all traces of their existence.” Though apologists for Islam admit that Hakim was a madman, they coyly offer him as an aberration, implying that Christians suffered only under his rule. Not so, writes Ibrahim, for there is “no dearth of Muslim leaders throughout the whole of Islamic history that have persecuted Christians and their churches.”

Many of us in our youth read stories of medieval Europe in which “Mohammedans,” “Moors,” “Saracens,” and “Turks” were fearsome antagonists. When we got to high school and university, somehow that feature of European life played a less prominent role or was even absent from history courses. It seems, though, that our earliest stories were accurate, and Ibrahim provides a broad set of facts to support this.

In the first decades of its existence, Islam had conquered half the Christian lands in the world and appeared to be on such a roll that it would soon squash Europe into a single Islamic polity. “In fact,” Ibrahim writes, “Europe as we know it was forged in large measure by the Islamic conquests, which severed the Latin West from the Greek East, turning the once highly trafficked Mediterranean into a ‘Muslim Lake’ — so that, in the words of medieval Muslim historian Ibn Khaldun, ‘the Christians could no longer float a plank upon the sea.’” Belgian historian Henri Pirenne makes the same point when he writes, “The classic tradition was shattered because Islam had destroyed the ancient unity of the Mediterranean” (Mohammed and Charlemagne, 1959).

In 1798 Napoleon invaded and handily conquered Egypt, in the heart of the Muslim world. This conquest was followed in the nineteenth century by other European powers subjugating and colonizing Muslim territories. These invasions traumatized Muslims, for prior to this their centuries-long winning streak intensified the triumphalism inherent in their religion. Muslims’ loss of confidence fell further as they witnessed close-up the power and dynamism of Western ideas and technology. Ibrahim quotes the late Osama bin Laden to the effect that “when people see a strong horse and a weak horse, by nature, they will like the strong horse.”

Muslims saw the West, synonymous for them with Christianity, as the strong horse, and they both feared and admired it. As Ibrahim writes with characteristic directness, “The reason for this admiration is simple: Islam, the quintessential religion of might makes right, teaches respect for power.” Some twentieth-century leaders like Mustafa Kemal Attaturk in Turkey, the Shah in Iran, and Gamal Nasser in Egypt attempted to emulate, at least in theory, Western ideas of nationalism, modernism, and secularization. During this time of Western confidence and hegemony, which extended to about 1950, Christians were tolerated in Muslim countries, and some even called this a “Golden Age for Christians” in the Islamic world.

Of course, some Muslims remained loyal to their old ways, but by the early twentieth century Western scholars saw Islam as “a spent force, an ideology on the wrong side of history.” That they would think this is understandable. After all, the much-extolled “secular city” had triumphed in the West, and it became difficult to imagine that the appetites for consumer items and sexual freedom it unleashed could abate.

But then the West began pulling up stakes in the Islamic world and elsewhere, while simultaneously adopting the religion of sentimentality as a replacement for Christianity. Soon, influential Westerners filled the air with mea culpas for their earlier imperialism and other alleged sins. Ibrahim shows in this book, as well as in his first book, The Al-Qaeda Reader, that the West’s orgy of self-criticism handed the Muslims all the propaganda weapons they required to rationalize the renewal of their attacks on the West. These rationalizations were so eagerly swallowed by our useful idiots that bin Laden poured it on even thicker by writing that the 9/11 attack was partly motivated by America’s failure to ratify the Kyoto treaty on climate change!

What few understood amid this confessional pose adopted by the West was that Islam sees imperialism as the normal exercise of power. So when Westerners began apologizing for what to Muslims were normal actions, Muslims’ respect for the West declined further. At the same time, they grabbed these propaganda clubs handed to them and proceeded to bash the infidels with their own words. Ibrahim argues further that this loss of respect spiraled downward into contempt when Islam saw “the new culture of sexual licentiousness, moral relativism, godlessness, and even the Western self-hatred that flooded Western societies in the late 1960s and 1970s, though they had roots going back decades earlier.” Sayyid Qutb, the twentieth century’s most renowned Islamic scholar and author of a thirty-volume commentary on the Koran, came to the U.S. in the 1940s. Though he had advocated that “Muslims should emulate Western science and technology,” visiting America radicalized him. Qutb insisted that, using Sharia law, Muslims must first clean up their own countries and then those of the rest of the world. Islamic supremacy and aggression, features of that old-time religion from the seventh century, were revived.

Nothing better exemplifies this revival than the Iranian Revolution of 1979, when Islam reasserted itself in the fiery leadership of the Ayatollah Khomeini and various bearded and morose mullahs who inveighed against “the Great Satan.” Their exaltation of Islam and loathing of America led to the overthrow of the Shah and the takeover of the U.S. embassy in Tehran — not only an act of war but also a repudiation of centuries-old international protocols. “Islam is back!” these actions screamed loudly, though many people saw them as isolated episodes, perhaps the last gasp of an antiquated ideology, rather than the harbinger of thirty-five years of terrorism. Still wallowing in ignorance, many Westerners dismiss Muslims’ ravaging and killing as merely an extended bad-hair day, a departure from Islam’s enlightened and peaceful past. But the truth is the reverse: The former period of tolerance toward Christians in Muslim lands is an exception, and the present attacks on Christians are the norm.

American and European opinion-makers in the universities, among the intelligentsia, and in the media began to demonize Western tradition in the 1970s and to favor “indigenous peoples” and any exotic “ethnic identity.” Thus came the growth of “multiculturalism” and “diversity,” categories implicitly justified as compensation for centuries of mistreatment. Unfortunately, many ethnic traditions include varieties of tribalism, sometimes expressed as racism or anti-Semitism. Via “noble savage” quackery, Western intellectuals broadened the pathway for once Westward-looking Muslims to return to their roots. History became a melodrama wherein the West is the villain and Islam the noble victim. Within these assigned roles, the true history of the relationship between the West and Islam reversed, with the West cast as greedy, violent crusaders who invaded peaceful, prosperous Muslim lands.

From such melodrama, Ibrahim reports, we get Robert Fisk, correspondent for The Independent, who follows this script of “spot the victim.” Fisk has criticized Christians for supporting status-quo candidates like Ahmed Shafiq in Egypt, not understanding that Christians are the victims and that jihadist alternatives to these regimes will kill Christians and burn their churches while imposing Sharia law. Former President Bill Clinton misreads the situation in much the same way when he relies on materialist explanations. “What’s fueling all this stuff,” he says, is “inequality and poverty.” When the Nigerian government uses force against the Boko Haram jihadist gang for killing Christians, Mr. Clinton preaches that such “violence” will not solve the problem. Violence, however, is the problem. From these ignominious examples, Ibrahim points to a pathetic irony: The Muslims presently persecuting Christians are themselves descendants of Christians who were persecuted by the same ideology and in the same terrible circumstances.

Raymond Ibrahim was born in America of Coptic Christian parents and has traveled widely in the Middle East. He has appeared before the U.S. Congress and on national radio and television, and he writes regularly for major newspapers and scholarly journals. His comprehensive description of the persecution of Christians by Muslims is extensively documented. While Crucified Again might not provide much comfort, it is necessary reading for those who wish to understand the dynamic that propels the Islamic threat.

Shillman Fellow Raymond Ibrahim's indispensable analysis of the bloody rise of Islamic supremacism.

Raymond Ibrahim’s new book, Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians, is an essential text — not merely for its thorough and deliberate documentation on the phenomenon of Islamic persecution against Christians from one end of the Muslim world to the other, but primarily for its contribution to our overall understanding of the challenge facing us from Islam. What I mean by this is that Mr. Ibrahim not only collects and collates data, and delivers it in a readable form. But far more importantly, he presents the historical record of Islam’s interaction with Christian communities in such a manner as to give us a corrective to the faulty understanding of Islam many have formed as the result of an historic aberration in recent times.

Here you will find clear definitions of classic Islamic doctrines of jihad, the dhimma contract, the Conditions of Omar, and more. Crucified Again serves very well as a primer for someone wanting to get up to speed on the threat of Radical Islam. But it is much more than an introductory book.

The book’s title is a subtle hook. For many, the eruption of Islamic violence against Christians the last couple of decades, and increasingly these last several years, indeed seems like a new war of Islam against Christians. Even the mainstream media is dropping its guard at times, and occasionally reporting (however haltingly) on the undeniable Muslim attacks against Christians. However, the idea that this might be a resumption of a very old war is literally unthinkable to many, whose knowledge of Islamic history is usually rather limited.

The accumulation of evidence presented by Raymond Ibrahim offers ominous proof that Muslim extremists are relentlessly persecuting Christians, from Morocco in northwest Africa to Nigeria in the Sub-Sahara; from the headline-grabbing church burnings, rapes, murders and forced conversions in Egypt, the Sinai and Syria, through Pakistan and Afghanistan; and from exotic locales like Malaysia and Thailand to the Philippines and Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim country. Literally everywhere in the Islamic world, Christians are under mounting pressure and worsening conditions. Safety and coexistence are a thing of the past.

But did a “coexistent past” between Muslims and Christians ever really exist? This important question is also at the crux of Ibrahim’s presentation.

In fact, there was, for about a century or so, a quasi-peaceful period between Christians and Muslims. Mr. Ibrahim calls this the “Christian Golden Age,” but as he convincingly proves, this quasi-peace was due not to any inherent tolerant strain within Islam itself, but rather to the incontestable dominance (both military and economic) of the Western European “Great Powers” (which also included Tsarist Russia) beginning about 1850, which interrupted centuries of Islamic supremacist tradition. This “Christian Golden Age” was also by no means universal; anti-Christian pogroms and persecutions continued, yet were not as widespread or frequent. (A horrific example of persecution during this period is the Armenian/Orthodox Genocide, which historians agree actually stretched from 1894 to 1922, and resulted in the death of 4 million Christians at the hands of the Turkish Muslims.)

As I have written about also on my blog, the European Great Powers severely constrained the reach and ambitions of the Ottoman Empire, which justly became known as the “Sick Old Man of Europe” as the 19th century advanced. Indeed, it was largely due to Russian intervention that the Serbs and Bulgarians won their independence in the latter half of the 19th century. The Armenians might have had their own nation-state also, had not the British intervened at the end of the Russo-Turkish War. But even without universal independence for all the Christian peoples under rule of the Ottoman Caliphate, the lot of Christians improved greatly due to European pressure on the Turks.

Nineteenth century European strength and self-assuredness also led to a reassessment by Muslims of their traditional cultural and political values. The appeal of the ascendant West, with its prosperity, scientific and medical advancements, and educational opportunities, inspired respect by Muslims and ushered in a secular era in the Islamic world, which largely eclipsed traditional Islam. Thus a dramatic westernization took place within the Islamic world. As Ibrahim notes, “many Muslims emulated Western ways, naturally sloughing off their Islamic identity and mentality and [their] contempt for ‘infidels’.”

Many effects were specific and dramatic. In 1856, under pressure from the Great Powers, the Ottoman Empire instituted reforms reversing 1200 years of Islamic law, recognizing non-Muslims as equal to Muslims, and granting freedom of religion. Many of the Christian churches today in the Islamic world were built following these reforms, and by the mid-20th century, Christians were generally viewed as equal citizens throughout the Middle East.

However, this “Christian Golden Age” has had an unexpected effect over the last few decades. Because our cultural memory stretches back only so far, many in the West are inclined to believe that the relative Muslim-Christian coexistence as seen from 1850-1950 is the norm, that it has always been thus. So most Westerners struggle with understanding the root causes of contemporary Muslim-on-Christian violence, without being able to consider Islam itself as the primary force. As Mr. Ibrahim writes, “They fail to comprehend that the Golden Age was the historical aberration—an exception to the rule, not the rule.”

Mr. Ibrahim offers an equally rigorous historical analysis of Islam’s dramatic and violent turn away from Western values. There are many lessons for the United States and Europe packed into this aspect of his study, which concentrates on Muslim rejection of the cultural and sexual revolution of the 1960s. Ironically, the “hyper-criticism” of the West by its own leftist intellectuals also helped turn the Muslim world against the United States and Europe, to where the 1970s saw the tipping point of Islam’s anti-Western shift, capped by the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran.

As Muslims have turned back to traditional Islam, Ibrahim continues, they have re-embraced more and more aspects of Islamic life, including the Sharia, and, as we are seeing in epidemic form, increased persecution of Christians:

The myopic West cannot comprehend that Muslims have gone back to treating Christians in the exact same ways Muslims treated Christians before Muslims began to emulate the West. That history is all but lost.

Raymond Ibrahim warns that the “cognitive dissonance between what the multiculturalists in the West believe about Islam, and what is reported as actually taking place in the Muslim world, is so great that many Westerners simply cannot take in the facts.” The net result is a systemic blind spot in Western analysis of Islamic motives, purpose, strategy and ultimate goals, which has crippled Western foreign policy in response to Islamic terrorism and the supremacist push of the “Arab Spring” revolutions.

None is so blind as he who will not see, and we have a great deal of work to do to open the eyes of America’s ruling classes, most of whom have been steeped in the leftist, multiculti worldview all their lives. But there is no denying any longer the facts, now reported even on the nightly news. As Mr. Ibrahim summarizes his historical section:

The persecution of Christian minorities in Muslim nations is among the most visible aspects of resurgent Islam. Nowhere does Islam behave like Islam as it does at home—where it is in power and not in need of pretense. Today, as the Islamic world reclaims its identity, Christians are further demonized as the “main transmitters of Western and modern attitudes.” And the work of eradicating them, which was begun some 1,400 years ago, is now on its way to fulfillment.

Towards the end of his book Raymond Ibrahim takes his gloves off, and lays into the compromised elements of academia, the mainstream media and Western government leaders. Fluent in Arabic, he is just the one for the job, as it is Ibrahim himself who has brought to the West many of the stories about Muslim persecution of Christians in the Islamic world, which would have never seen the light of day had he not been monitoring and translating into English reports from Arabic news sources.

Elsewhere, Mr. Ibrahim excoriates slanted reporting in the West, which seems always intent on glossing over Muslim persecution of Christians, or portraying Muslims in the best possible light, often by referring to one-sided attacks on defenseless Christians by armed Muslim mobs as “sectarian clashes” and the like, as if there were two evenly matched groups of equally guilty miscreants. After countless examples of such biased reporting, Ibrahim concludes:

Christian persecution is perhaps the most obvious example of a phenomenon the mainstream media wants to ignore out of existence—Islamic supremacism… If the mainstream media were to report honestly on the persecution of Christians under Islam, the obvious implications that Islam is dangerously hostile to all non-Muslims would be inescapable. Hence, journalists develop an instinct—or make a deliberate choice—to ignore or minimize these uncomfortable facts. No wonder so many Americans, including most self-professed Christians, are either totally unaware of the phenomenon or have no idea of its extent or significance.

This is precisely why, of all books on Islam, Raymond Ibrahim’s new work Crucified Again is indispensable. The lessons contained within it are many, and it will bear repeated readings, as well as serving as an essential resource text. Exhaustive documentary of Muslim persecution of Christians, corrective historical analysis, antidote to the poison of a false multicultural narrative perpetuated by academia, the media and government—this is Raymond Ibrahim’s herculean counter assault to the global challenge of an emboldened Islam. He is striving with the pen to advance a paradigm shift in our epistemology, our very worldview, and the stakes for our civilization couldn’t be higher.

Islamic supremacism is back, in a very big way, and Raymond Ibrahim is at the forefront of Western scholarship in opening our eyes and minds to the crisis now hammering away at our front door.

Raymond Ibrahim is a widely published author, public speaker, and Middle East and Islam expert, and author most recently of Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians. Follow him on Twitter @RaymondIbrahim5

Venn Institute: Most Americans see persecution of Christians and other minorities in Muslim majority nations as a recent phenomenon. Why is that not the case?

Ibrahim: It’s been going on, and the same exact patterns, for centuries. Such persecution is well recorded in the world’s primary historical texts—western and eastern. It’s not so well known in the West, however, because Western mainstream media are less interested in reporting ugly truths than they are invalidating their secular, liberal narrative—a narrative which maintains that Muslims are fundamentally peaceful, and, far from being persecuted, Christians are the oppressors.

Venn Institute: What are the Conditions of Omar and how are they being revived worldwide?

Ibrahim: They are a set of stipulations purportedly ratified between the second caliph of the same name and a conquered Christian community in the 7th century. Among other debilitations and humiliations, churches must not be built or fixed; crosses and bibles and even church singing must be suppressed around Muslims; Christians must get out of their seats if Muslims want them and over all “honor” Muslims. Today, as Muslims reclaim their Islamic heritage—to applause from Western multiculturalists—they are increasingly enforcing the Conditions on Christians.

Venn Institute: Most Christian traditions encourage their followers to study, research, and ask the hard questions so they can be confident in their faith. Yet Sharia outlaws apostasy, so-called blasphemy, and proselytism to Muslims, all in an effort to prevent Muslims from leaving their faith. How does this religious and social control impact culture in Muslim majority countries?

Ibrahim: To those Muslims who can still think—and they are not a few—they immediately see through Islam’s low self-confidence and thus need to keep people from critically thinking or questioning, and they often become apostates, even if only secretly. Conversely, those with less critical skills—who are popularly called “Islamists”—often buy into the Islamic worldview, based on Sharia teachings, and become “radical,” or, in short, espouse the 7th century mentality of a desert Bedouin they deem infallible, that is, their prophet.

Venn Institute: You wrote extensively about the horrific and systematic rape, beating, kidnappings, and forced conversion of Christian women and girls including the frequent targeting of girls as young as 9 years old. How is it that Americans are not more aware of this epidemic of violence, and why aren’t women’s rights groups speaking out about it?

Ibrahim: I discuss this at some length in Crucified Again. Suffice to say, so many so-called Western “humanitarians” and “feminists pick and choose who is worthy of their support—and considering that so many of these are of the liberal/secular mentality—which often is tinged with anti-Christian sentiment—Christian victims of rape, etc., are unworthy of attention.

Venn Institute: Americans are typically uncomfortable with religious value claims or offending people of other faiths. Presumably critics consider you anti-Islam when reading quotes from your book such as,

“The long record of Muslim violence specifically targeting churches, monasteries, and crosses is conclusive evidence of Muslim hostility toward the Christian religion itself. This centuries-old, continents-wide pattern of violence cannot be explained by the race, culture, or particular circumstances of the perpetrators…The common factor in all these attacks on Christian worship-the real reason behind them-can only be Islam itself.” How do you respond to claims that you are anti-Islam and how do you hope your research will make a difference amongst skeptics?

Ibrahim: I document, For example, one of the things even critics of the book have extolled is that Crucified Again has some 60 pages of endnotes and citations alone. Thus, my assertions, such as the one you quote, are borne out by a myriad of sources which I document. Unfortunately, those who whitewash Islam are not held to the same standard. If you read one of Karen Armstrong’s popular pro-Islam books, it all sounds good and sensible to the Western mentality—but for those who know better, we are left wondering where she gets her facts, as she rarely documents. On the other hand, because a book like mine is critical of Islam, I need to document all my findings—not that doing so will still fend off the anti-Islam charges that you mention come my way.

Venn Institute: You gave many examples of how the Obama Administration has supported terrorists and Islamists who have in turn persecuted minority faith and political groups, suppressing human rights and democracy. Why would the US government pursue a foreign policy so contrary to American values and national interest?

Ibrahim: Because Americans are only half awake—saturated as they are by a mass media campaign dedicated to making them oblivious to reality while directing their gaze to meaningless and vain things—I can barely listen to the mainstream media for more than a few minutes before running for shelter, as the things they highlight as “newsworthy” are beyond silly, even as the U.S. administration openly empowers Islamic jihadis around the world—the same fellows behind 9/11 and any number of other anti-American attacks. So we have a situation today where people around the world are insisting that Obama is in league with the jihadis, while Americans are busy talking about Kim Kardashian.

Venn Institute: Why should people of all faiths or no faith be concerned about the resurgence of Islamism worldwide, and what can they do to protect and promote religious freedom or all?

Ibrahim: The story of Crucified Again is about Christian suffering under Islam. However, the same hostility that Christians experience is felt for all non-Muslims. The only difference is that Christians are currently under Islamic hegemony—as most of the so-called Islamic world is really conquered Christian territory with Christian remnants—and so they are vulnerable to persecution. The U.S. for the moment is not; but if the opportunity ever comes, the same attacks on Christians will come to everyone who becomes vulnerable.

Venn Institute: How can people keep up with your research and publications?

Ibrahim: When it comes to the topic of Christian persecution by Muslims, my book really says it all. But for up to date research and publications, my website carries them all, www.RaymondIbrahim.com.

To order Raymond Ibrahim’s Crucified Again, click here.

Our rights in Egypt, as Christians or converts, are less than the rights of animals. We are deprived of social and civil rights, deprived of our inheritance and left to the fundamentalists to be killed. Nobody bothers to investigate or care about us. – Maher Al-Gohary, Muslim apostate

One of the most disturbing consequences of the “Arab Spring,” the tragic misnomer given by the giddy news media to a violent surge of Islamic fundamentalists against despised Western “puppets” such as Libya’s Qaddafi and Egypt’s Mubarak, is an undisguised genocide against Christian communities in those regions. Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians, the new book by the Freedom Center’s Shillman Fellow Raymond Ibrahim, exposes that genocide not so much as a new war but as the renewal of a very old one.

Ibrahim is, as FrontPage readers well know, a Middle East and Islam specialist best-known for The Al Qaeda Reader. He has appeared in media venues from MSNBC to Reuters to Al Jazeera to Fox News, lectured at universities and before government agencies, and even testified before Congress on the plight of Egypt’s Christian Copts.

“Christians are being persecuted in Muslim countries today,” Ibrahim writes,

for the same reasons as in past centuries. And the patterns of persecution – the same motivations, the same actions, and the same horrific results – recur in countries as different as Kenya and Denmark. Those patterns emerge from themes in the Koran, in Islamic theology, in Sharia law, and in Islamic culture.

Those patterns lead Ibrahim to the inexorable conclusion which he hammers home throughout the book: “One thing alone accounts for such identical patterns in such otherwise diverse nations: Islam itself – whether the strict application of its Sharia, or the supremacist culture born of it.” Indeed, Ibrahim notes that of the top 50 countries documented for Christian persecution today, 42 are either Muslim-majority nations or have sizeable Muslim populations, and no other factors – economic, political, or ethnic – account for that overwhelming predominance.

After documenting some examples of recent Christian persecution in disparate regions, Ibrahim ties them together thusly:

Egypt, Nigeria, Indonesia, and the Philippines have very little in common. These countries do not share the same language, race, or culture. What, then, do they have in common that explains this similar pattern of church attacks during Christian holy days? The answer is Islam.

But what about Islam’s vaunted historic reputation for interfaith tolerance? Didn’t President Obama, in his servile Cairo address in 2009, claim that “Islam has a proud tradition of tolerance”? What about the relatively recent “Golden Age” for Christians in the Muslim world – from approximately 1850-1950 – during which they were largely unoppressed and laws governing dhimmis were abolished?

Ibrahim’s argument is that this era was primarily the result of the impact of Western civilization in breaking down fanaticism in Islamic lands. Muslims even began emulating Western ways, “sloughing off their Islamic identity and mentality and the contempt for ‘infidels’ that… is an integral part of that mentality.” That Golden Age, unfortunately, “was the historical aberration,” and what reversed the trend was a fresh contempt for the West’s “new culture of sexual licentiousness, moral relativism, godlessness, and even Western self-hatred that flooded Western societies in the 1960s.” Muslims also fed off “the hyper-criticism of the West and its values by leftist Western intellectuals,” a faction that remains complicit today.

Ibrahim traces the fascinating history and theological origins of Islam’s “innate hostility to Christianity,” which it targets in no small measure because Christianity, the largest religion in the world and Islam’s historical enemy, is a proselytizing faith – which Islam, with its rigid laws against apostasy, blasphemy, and proselytism, cannot abide. Also, Christians historically have embraced martyrdom rather than betray their faith. But he also notes that

Christians suffer violence at the hands of Muslims for reasons that go beyond conscious applications of Islamic doctrines. The hostility Sharia engenders toward Christians has permeated the culture, mentality, and worldview of the average Muslim.

Ibrahim goes on to catalog a jaw-dropping, relentless litany of examples of forced conversion, attacks on churches and the cross, and savage persecution of Christians throughout the Muslim world, a list broken down by country. He classifies this “climate of hate” into three general categories: harassment by Muslim governments, attacks by Muslim mobs, and attacks by jihadis.

As for why this crisis attracts so little attention, he points to three enormously influential institutions: Western academia, for whitewashing Islam and blaming the West; Western media, for obscuring the persecution; and Western governments for enabling it. They “have all refused to acknowledge what Christians are suffering… in keeping with their reluctance to recognize that Islam itself is the cause of this persecution.” It is this reticence that drives those institutions, for example, to portray “unprovoked Muslim attacks on Christians… as ‘sectarian strife.’” Blurring the line between victim and oppressor, Ibrahim writes, “is a regular tactic of the mainstream media, especially when it comes to reporting on Muslim persecution of Christians.”

Ibrahim rightly points the finger more specifically at the Obama administration, which in both words and actions “has not only ignored Muslim persecution of Christians, but also actually enabled it,” through Obama’s “wholesale support of the ‘Arab Spring.’” He also takes Western Christians themselves to task for buying into the mainstream narrative and for a tendency “to express compassion for anyone and everyone other than fellow Christians.”

“The return of the persecution of Christians under Islam,” Ibrahim concludes, “is the most visible aspect of a larger and more dangerous phenomenon: the return of Islam as a global force.” And we ignore that persecution at our peril.

Even for someone like myself and for FrontPage’s regular readers, who are acutely aware of the resurgent Islamic persecution of Christians in Muslim lands worldwide, Crucified Again is a gripping, must-read eye-opener.
