And yes, it was all Bush's fault.

Dan Rather and Mary Mapes had a great story about the time George W. Bush illegitimately got into the Texas Air National Guard. There was only one problem. Their damning letter was written with a copy of Microsoft Word which didn’t exist back then.

So their letter proved to be as real as Robert Redford’s hair color.

Rather refused to retract the story, then retracted it, then unretracted it, and hangs around Cuban’s network pretending to be a journalist while insisting that a time traveling computer was to blame.

Now the exciting story of that time traveling computer is coming to a theater near you (probably not).

Directed by James Vanderbilt of the Vanderbilt clan, responsible for those two new Spider Man movies you hated, and White House Down, an Obama fanboy flick about Obama killing Republicans, and starring the still mostly-alive Robert Redford and Cate Blanchett, the movie will adapt producer Mary Mapes’ ridiculous self-serving time-traveling computer memoir “Truth and Duty”.

And yes, it was all Bush’s fault.

The media coverage of Truth, true to form, avoids mentioning the whole Microsoft Word problem and just mentions offhand that the documents were alleged to be forgeries. (The only way it could be an allegation is if there was a time traveling computer with a copy of Microsoft Word.)

Mapes’ book is an unintentionally hilarious read.

“There had been anything like it, a mobilization of right-wing internet users… they would use their numbers, their volume and their sheer insistence to rip at a respected anchor/reporter, a news program and a network,” the elitist Mapes writes, outraged that ordinary people could dare challenge her.

“Their partisan claims, unsubstantiated as they were to any observer who clung to objecitivty, were stated and restated incessantly as absolute, unshakeable facts,” Mapes writes of the conservative bloggers who took her and Rather down.

Mapes misses the irony that this is exactly what her media does.

One of those bloggers, Charles Johnson, has gone to the left and spends his time ranting about Sarah Palin. But even he hasn’t backed away from the document scam.

“The reputations we had worked so hard to build were trashed repeatedly by bloggers who sat in the dark and signed off on angry missives,” Mary Mapes whined.

But the liberal elites take care of their own and Mapes is getting a belated bailout while Rather is getting his reputation rehabbed. All it will take is a few liberal investors willing to subsidize this propaganda flick.

Couric hopes to persuade other TV veterans make the transition into online programming.

Katie Couric, CBS’s second-worst mistake after airing a report based on a Vietnam War era document types up on Microsoft Word, is following Dan Rather into obscurity as “news anchor” for Yahoo.

Considering that Yahoo is on its last legs and Katie Couric has worn out her welcome everywhere else, this seems like a good fit. And if Yahoo folds, Couric can always join former CBS anchorman Dan Rather on ASX TV doing “news reports” alongside Drinking Made Easy and Bikini Barbershop. And if she gets really desperate, she can start doing Newsroom recaps just like Dan Rather.

Yahoo officially announced Monday that Couric is joining its ranks as its “global anchor.”

After more than three decades on the air as a journalist and talk show hostess, the 56-year-old will now add Internet explorer to her resume, helping to develop global coverage for Yahoo. As part of her new position, which is still being defined, Couric will conduct monthly interview series and serve as the “face” of Yahoo News.

Does an internet news feed really need a face? Apparently it does.

No one watched Couric on CBS. Now no one can watch her on Yahoo. Which is easy because who really wants to tune in to watch Katie Couric’s interviews with Yahoo interns.

“Katie’s depth of experience, her intellectual curiosity, and her charisma make her the perfect choice to anchor Yahoo News and the whole Yahoo Network. Her unmatched energy, savvy, and versatility enables her to connect with audiences across the globe,” said Marissa Mayer, CEO of Yahoo. “News is a definitive daily habit for our users — and Katie will work with our talented editorial team to pioneer a new chapter of digital journalism.”

Given a choice between pouring gasoline the company and setting it on fire… appointing Marissa Mayer CEO, Yahoo should have exercised its gasoline option.

Anyone who still uses Yahoo Mail probably already knows why.

The only question is was Katie Couric stupid enough to accept stock or did Marissa Mayer just blow a crazy amount of money to get Katie Couric to appear in videos that no one will watch?

“I am particularly excited about hopefully attracting other people to this platform and venture,” Couric said in an interview with The Associated Press. “We are in a major, transformative time in terms of media in this country.”

Katie Couric is hoping to attract people to the internet? In 2013. Oh boy.

She hopes will help persuade other broadcast TV veterans make the transition into online programming.

Dan Rather did it first. Speaking of Rather…

Notably, CBS did not include Rather in its own planned coverage of the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination. Rather appears only in archival footage.

This wasn’t exactly unexpected, said Rather–it’s been happening since he lost his job in a somewhat mysterious sequence of events after he reported on “60 Minutes” that a series of memos questioning President George W. Bush’s Texas Air National Guard service record had been discovered.

Mysterious? Was there a second Microsoft Word typist on the grassy knoll?

The LA Times story never mentions the words "Microsoft Word". Instead there's a conspiracy.

And you can’t blame CBS. When your fake journalist’s pathetic attempt at a gotcha story turns out to have come from a Vietnam War era copy of Microsoft Word, you shove him into the biggest darkest hole there is where he does television recaps of the Newsroom. (No, really.)

The LA Times story never mentions the words “Microsoft Word”. Instead there’s a conspiracy. Evil corporate interests are mysteriously removing Dan Rather from history because they’re being all corporatey.

Maybe CBS killed JFK. Before killing Dan Rather’s career. You never know.

Former “CBS Evening News” anchor Dan Rather participated in a media conference call Thursday to discuss AXS TV’s one-hour special, “My Days in Dallas: A Remembrance With Dan Rather,” which premieres Monday at 5 p.m. PST.

What is ASX.tv? Well it’s the home of such quality programming as Bikini Barbershop and World’s Greatest Tribute Bands, Bikini Destinations, Tom Green and Drinking Made Easy with Zane Lamprey.

Also Dan Rather Reports.

Yes, that’s how low he has sunk.

Rather was present in Dallas 50 years ago when Kennedy was assassinated and became a go-to presence on the scene for CBS as those dark days unfolded.

Yes, it’s mysterious. Someone mysteriously presented a mysterious letter typed up on Microsoft Word, which Dan Rather claimed dated back to the Vietnam War.

There’s only one possible explanation. Time travel.

Or maybe Dan Rather is a lying liar.

The authenticity of the documents was soon called into question, although Rather defended the truth of the story.

“This follows the pattern that they’ve had for some years of in effect trying to airbrush me out of their history,” Rather said of CBS’ choice to not include him in their Kennedy assassination coverage. “That doesn’t bother me all that much nor should it…But I think the news consumer might want to question whether you want large corporations trying to change history for their corporate interests.”

Dan Rather is delusional enough to think that CBS not including the guy whose program airs on the same channel as Bikini Destinations is changing history.

“Our story, the Bush story for which I eventually lost my job and other people lost theirs, was a true story,” Rather said. “One can argue about the process by which we got to the story but ours was a true story, never been denied by the president.”

Also President Bush never denied using hologram planes to fake 9/11. It must be true!

Dan Rather will be remembered for two things. Fake but accurate. And. “What’s the frequency, Kenneth.” It seems he’s doubling down on Fake, but Accurate.

And by “Journalism”, Dan Rather means lying.

Rather said good reporting was in decline, and with the “new Internet,” “traditional journalism” remains “so susceptible to manipulation, deception, and distraction that it allows lies to get started and then spread like mildew in a damp basement.”

Rather and Schultz were criticizing conservative new media outlets like Breitbart News for writing stories about President Barack Obama’s nominee for Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel’s refusal to disclose financial documents in his confirmation hearings.

Rather sorrowfully recounted his glory days, when the American mainstream media “was the gold standard for the world.” If a reporter received false information from a source, he claimed, “he found it out because he wore out shoe leather, he made telephone calls, his organization had other reporters who would check it out, and they’ve exposed the lie.”

The last time Dan Rather wore out his shoe leather, he was chasing after Richard Nixon. The American media has not been the gold standard for the world since the country was on the gold standard. It was just big. Now it’s getting smaller.

The entire media has become a classier version of BuzzFeed combining such vital topics as amusing internet videos, celebrity mishaps and left-wing think-tank talking points into bland stories.

Occasionally someone in the media will write an actual in-depth story, a prestige piece that reminds you of what the media used to be even twenty years ago. But these stories will invariably be on non-political issues or political issues that the left doesn’t really care about because they’re overseas. The rest of the time even the prestige pieces are just a collection of talking points with biographical backing.

The media killed its own credibility when it went from inserting bias into legitimate coverage to turning its bias into the coverage. Like the Boston Globe cover up top, they’re no longer pretending. There is no difference between DailyKos, Think Progress and the Boston Globe.

And who helped make that happen? Dan Rather, who exists as a reminder of a time when a media figure would actually be fired for telling a lie.

Silence from leftists on the racist statements from within their ranks.

Liberal racism sightings have become like a lunatic’s version of “Where’s Waldo?” Kevin Baker of Harper’s magazine says Romney’s referring to his “five boys” in last week’s debate was how he “slyly found a way” to call Obama a “boy.” Says Baker: “How the right’s hard-core racists must have howled at that!”

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews says the word “apartment” is racist because black people live in apartments. He also says the word “Chicago” is racist because — despite its well-known reputation as the home of Al Capone and the Daley machine — a lot of black people live there, too. (And don’t get him started on “Chicago apartments”!)

As we go to press, Matthews is working on an exciting new hypothesis that peanut butter is racist.

Meanwhile, my new favorite actress, Stacey Dash, sends an inoffensive little tweet supporting Mitt Romney and is buried in tweets calling her “an indoor slave” and a “jiggaboo,” who was “slutting (herself) to the white man.” (And those were just the tweets from the Obama 2012 Re-election Campaign!)

Could we get an expert opinion from Chris Matthews or Kevin Baker about whether any of that is racist?

It’s a strange thing with liberals. They spend so much time fawning over black nonentities — like Maya Angelou, Eugene Robinson, Barack and Michelle Obama, and Rachel Maddow’s very, very, very special black guest Melissa Harris-Perry — that, every once in awhile, they seem to erupt in racist bile to restore their mental equilibrium.

After President George W. Bush appointed Condoleezza Rice the first black female secretary of state, she was maligned in racist cartoons portraying her as Aunt Jemima, Butterfly McQueen from “Gone With the Wind,” a fat-lipped Bush parrot and other racist cliches.

Kevin Baker didn’t notice any of that because he was working on his theory that referring to your sons is racist.

When Michael Steele ran for senator from Maryland, he was depicted in blackface and with huge red lips by liberal blogger Steve Gilliard. Sen. Charles Schumer’s Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee dug up a copy of Steele’s credit report — something done to no other Republican candidate.

Is that more or less racist than Romney mentioning his sons? More or less racist than the word “apartment”?

Mia Love, a black Republican running for Congress in Utah had her Wikipedia page hacked with racist bile, heavy on the N-word. Her campaign headquarters has been bombarded with racist graffiti and slimy mailings with pictures of Klansman next to photos of her family.

Some would say that’s even more racist than Romney talking about his sons.

On less evidence than the birthers have, liberals slandered both Clarence Thomas and Herman Cain with the racist stereotype of black men as sexual predators.

As the preceding short list suggests, liberals usually limit their racist slime to conservative blacks. But not always.

In 2008, Bill Clinton said of Obama “a few years ago this guy would have been carrying our bags.” Democratic Sen. Harry Reid praised Obama for not speaking in a “Negro dialect.” Joe Biden complimented Obama for being “clean” and “articulate.”

Did I mention that Kevin Baker thinks that Romney referring to his “five boys” is racist?

Two years ago, liberal newsman Dan Rather said the criticism of Obama was that he “couldn’t sell watermelons if you gave him the state troopers to flag down the traffic.” (I immediately called for Rather’s firing for that, and then remembered that he didn’t have a job.)

Last week, Rather won the 2012 Edward R. Murrow Award for Lifetime Achievement from Washington State University. That’s not a joke — or at least not my joke.

Meanwhile, evidence of alleged Republican racism invariably consists of tenuous connections and apocryphal signals normally associated with schizophrenics and sufferers of “Thrilled Leg Syndrome.”

Since February 2008, the primary evidence of racism has been failure to fully support Obama’s election, policies or re-election. As Slate magazine’s Jacob Weisberg put it during the last presidential campaign, only if Obama were elected president would children in America be able to “grow up thinking of prejudice as a nonfactor in their lives.”

I wish I had a nickel for every kid who’s come up to me in an airport and said, “What I wouldn’t give to be able to think of prejudice as a non-factor in my life …”

Curiously, liberals weren’t concerned about what children in America would think if Clarence Thomas’ Supreme Court nomination had been defeated. No, only electing the most liberal person ever to seek the presidency on a major party ticket would prove that the country could “put its own self-interest ahead of its crazy irrationality over race.”

The left’s racial demagoguery worked: In 2008, Obama received a larger proportion of the white vote than any Democrat running for president in nearly 40 years. (Though he tied Clinton’s 1996 white vote record.)

And look how well that turned out! We haven’t heard another peep about racism since then.

To read more about what a smashing success the left’s utterly self-serving racial bullying has been, read my new book, “Mugged: Racial Demagoguery From the Seventies to Obama.”
