The greatest media enemies of Israel exposed.

Burson-Marsteller – one of the world’s largest PR firms – who refused to represent Israel, yet accepted Muslim Brotherhood as a client recently issued its annual Twiplomacy study. As they explain the study, “World leaders vie for attention, connections and followers on Twitter.” Social media of course continues to grow worldwide.

To no surprise, their study basically reveals that Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is a world leader with a very keen understanding of how media and influence works. Some years ago, Prime Minister Netanyahu reportedly said in an interview that the two main enemies facing Israel are The New York Times and Israeli newspaper Haaretz. “They set the agenda for an anti-Israel campaign all over the world. Journalists read these publications every morning and base their news stories … on what they read in the New York Times and Haaretz.”

Indeed, the “Twiplomacy study” revealed that for world leaders, The New York Times is the single most popular news source on Twitter – and Haaretz is the most-followed Israeli news source on Twitter amongst world leaders. Both of these media outlets are virulently opposed to Israel’s policies.

The journalists most followed by world-leaders should also be concerning to Israel supporters. The most-followed journalist by world leaders is CNN anchor Christiane Amanpour, whom many consider virulenty anti-Israel. Glenn Beck has called Amanpour “anti-Western,” “anti-Jew” and media watchdog organization CAMERA has called her a “frequent Israel basher.”

The 2nd most-followed journalist by world leaders on Twitter goes to another CNN anchor, Fareed Zakaria, who last year asked the Israeli Ambassador to the United States why Israel needs to be a Jewish state. Rounding out the top 5 comes NYT Columnists #3 Nicholas Kristof, #4 Paul Krugman (who has written that the policies of the current “narrow minded” Israeli government “are basically a gradual long-run form of national suicide”), and perpetual Anti-Israel critic Uncle Tom Friedman. (In 2011, Friedman described the Israeli government as “drunk,” “out of touch” and “in-bred,” and wrote that congressional ovations for Prime Minister Netanyahu were “bought and paid for by the Israel lobby.”)

The media is unabashedly Anti-Israel – and undoubtedly affects world policies.

Ze’ev Jabotinsky, the Zionist prophet some years ago noted,

Who were the first to teach us to always interfere in matters that are not ours, to judge people and nations, even though we were never chosen for the position of judge? The work of the publicist is a legacy from the Prophets of Israel…Our passion is to speak, to proclaim—‘Shouting” is what the same audience calls it, ‘we have no need for words, give us actions.’ One thing that audience forgets is that speech is also an action – Perhaps the most authentic of all actions. Cities have been destroyed, and more will fall, but what was shouted in the wilderness thousands of years ago is alive and still relevant. The world was created by the Word. The world will be mended by the Article.

Media bias hurts Israel – and anyone with the ability to influence media to tell the truth should do all they can to help improve Israel’s image.

Obama administration minions are dispatched to publicly condemn the Jewish State.

Let us engage in a brief thought experiment. Imagine if a top American official during World War II, say Eisenhower or perhaps Bradly, publically blasted Britain while British troops were slugging it out with German panzers at Caen, while British blood was being used to secure the Allies’ left flank and the roads to Paris. It is an inconceivable thought, but had it occurred, evidence of a fissure among allies would have served to embolden Hitler and would have had a devastating demoralizing effect on our British partners.

Of course, the Allies had their differences (Montgomery and Patton were notorious critics of one another) but generally kept them hush and within the family. It would be unfathomable for members of the Allied powers to publically censure one another, for such action would be deemed counterproductive. On the rare occasion where a ranking member of the Allied forces veered from accepted protocol and issued public criticism, he was scolded and quickly forced to issue a retraction or apology.

Fast forward to July 2014. Israel is currently in the midst of a vicious asymmetrical war with Hamas, an Islamist organization rooted in fascism whose charter would likely make the most ardent Nazi blush. Rockets of all shapes and sizes are deliberately being fired by the terrorist group from civilian areas into civilian areas. While Israel is in crisis and in need of political allies, a ranking member of the Obama administration has chosen this among all times to blast Israel.

On July 8, at a conference organized by Israel’s premiere leftist daily Ha’aretz, Phillip Gordon, President Obama’s special assistant and White House coordinator for the Middle East, issued harsh condemnation of Israel claiming that Israeli policies were a source of regional instability and showered praise on the Palestinian Authority’s unelected strongman, Mahmoud Abbas. Ironically, the conference was interrupted by rocket fire from Israel’s Palestinian “peace partners,” forcing attendees to disperse and seek safety in more secure rooms.

Gordon is merely echoing the views of his boss, who expressed similar sentiment in an opinion piece written exclusively for Ha’aretz. It is ironic that the President chose Ha’aretz out of all forums to express his views. Ha’aretz maintains a daily circulation that barely hovers at five percent and is near financial ruin for lack of readership. It is a marginal, radical leftist daily that caters to the views of Israel’s most extreme fanatics and on more than one occasion, Ha’aretz was forced to retract featured stories that were proven to be defamatory and false. These facts mattered not to Obama for the radical views espoused by the Ha’aretz editorial board are in line with his own.

As for Gordon’s claim that Israel’s policies contribute to regional instability, the indefatigable David Horovitz said it best when he noted that it’s as though a clueless Gordon had just arrived from the “Planet Zog” and had “mistaken the Middle East for Finland.” That is an accurate summation. With 200,000-plus dead in Syria, Iraq unraveling, Egypt teetering, Iran on the verge of nuclear breakout and the rest of the Arab world imploding, Gordon chooses Israel as the source of the region’s troubles and does so while some 40% of the country is under rocket fire from the very people he expects Israel to do business with. Now if that doesn’t represent the zenith of chutzpah, I don’t know what does.

The praise heaped upon Abbas by Gordon and his boss is equally puzzling and quite disturbing. Abbas is an unelected autocrat whose term of office expired in 2009. He is also an unqualified Holocaust denier who referred to the death of 6,000,000 Jews as a “fantastic lie,” denied the existence of gas chambers and alleged, somewhat contradictorily, that, “The Zionist movement led a broad campaign of incitement against the Jews living under Nazi rule, in order to arouse the government’s hatred of them, to fuel vengeance against them, and to expand the mass extermination.” In other words, the Jews are to blame for their own mass extermination, which incidentally, never actually occurred. Lastly, Abbas has partnered with Hamas, the very group that seeks Israel’s destruction, the very group responsible for the recent kidnapping-murder of three Israel teens and the very group that’s currently trying to inflict maximum civilian casualties by targeting Israeli cities with deadly rockets. These inconvenient truths are seemingly ignored by the Ostrich-like White House.

But to get a true sense of how insidious Abbas is one need look no further than comments he recently made in connection with Israel’s recent counter-insurgency efforts. He alleged that Israel is committing genocide and compared Israel’s defensive measures to atrocities carried out by the Nazis at Auschwitz concentration camp, where at least 1,080,000 people, the majority of them Jews, were murdered.

President Obama and his minions have noted on different occasions that the bonds between Israel and the United States are iron clad and when the chips are down, the administration has Israel’s back. Well Mr. President, you have indeed lived up to expectations. The chips are down and the knife you’re sticking in Israel’s back today has nearly come out the other side.

Israel's Pravda champions putting Jewish baby girls into comas.

Something like 6% of Israelis, or one in 16, begins his or her morning each day with a little serving of treason du jour known as Haaretz. Not only is this the Palestinian newspaper printed in Hebrew, its ideological line no longer differs in any noticeable way from the party line of the Israeli communist party, except when it comes to economics. (In bizarre only-in-Israel manner, Haaretz’ business section is the most strongly pro-market in all Israeli media.)

In the darkest days of Stalinism, communists and Soviet “citizens” would open Pravda (and its clones) each morning to discover just what it is that they think and are expected to think. In some cases, what they were commanded to think might change throughout the day. The infamous example was the day when the morning edition of all communist papers in the world gushed about the deep friendship and lasting trust between Comrade Stalin and his ally and friend Adolf Hitler. Then the afternoon editions screamed denunciations of Nazi Germany and Hitler for invading the Soviet Union in Operation Barbarossa.

The Israeli radical Left works pretty much the same way. It opens Haaretz each morning in order to discover what it thinks. And it then spends the rest of the day mouthing these opinions and advocating what its gurus have instructed it to advocate.

Of the 6 percent of Israelis who read the “newspaper,” my guess is that 4 out of the 6 read it for the business/economic supplement, which is the best on these subjects in Israel. Go figure. Of the remaining 2 percent, some like me read it so they can see just what the enemy is thinking and planning. The remaining 1 to 2% are the true believers, the goose-stepping rank and file of the ultra-Left, many of these of course being tenured leftists.

Haaretz is openly anti-Zionist and pro-terror and pro-jihad. It opposes any sanctions and aggressive policy against Iran. Every day the paper is filled with mailman-bites-dog stories, about how settlers supposedly attack Arabs or vandalize Arab property. If Haaretz were reporting on World War II using its staff of today, the paper would be filled with reports about the sufferings of innocent German and Japanese civilians as a result of the aggressions of the Western imperialist powers: America and Britain. With no comment at all about Axis aggression.

The newspaper of the thinking Israeli, as it likes to dub itself, openly cheers on Palestinians who throw rocks and molotov cocktails at Jews. After all, the Palestinians have grievances. The paper only uses the “T” word “terrorist” to refer to Jews, never to Arabs. Last week Jack Teitel, the mentally ill ex-American who killed two Arabs and placed a small explosive device near the home of radical anti-Israel professor Zeev Sternhall, was denounced by Haaretz (he was just sentenced to two life terms in prison) as a “Jewish terrorist.” The rest of the Left repeated the mantra in unison: Teitel is not a terrorist but a mentally ill person.

Arabs who murder Jews are always militants and activists in Haaretz lingo. So are al-Qaeda members. You will never read about any of those proven cases where Arabs intentionally vandalize Arab property as a provocation to make it look like Jews were the perps. Haaretz of course was also involved up to its kaffiya in the Anat Kam, – Uri Blau espionage scandal.

A couple of weeks back, Arabs throwing rocks mortally injured a Jewish baby girl in the West Bank, who was put into a coma. Haaretz’ responded to the terrorism by running a special Op-Ed by Israel’s Tokyo Rose, Amira Hass, a Haaretz regular, cheering on Arabs who throw rocks at Jews and demanding more rock throwing by Arabs at Jewish babies to end “occupation.” You can read about her declaration of war against Jews here. Of course, if anyone were to claim they have grievances and then throw rocks at the Haaretz building in Tel Aviv, THAT would be terrorism.

Haaretz recently ran a long piece about a group of four innocent Arab victims of Israeli aggression. It seems they were shot by soldiers when they were minding their own business and merely throwing molotov cocktails at Jews. You know, the same molotov cocktails used in World War II to destroy Panzers. That story is written by “reporter” Gideon Levy, the most openly anti-Israel and pro-terror columnist in the entire Israeli media — a guy who makes the late Alexander Cockburn (I always called him Alexander Burncock) look like a US patriot. Levy tries to paint one injured bomb thrower as a truly sympathetic character. The bomb thrower’s father is asked what his son dreams about. The father says, replacing the tin roof over his bedroom with a solid construction. Why the father let his son throw bombs instead of sending him to get a job and earn the money needed for the roof is one of those Haaretz imponderables. Another story is about how settler bullies beat up some poor innocent Palestinian youths who were merely throwing rocks at them and trying to put them into comas like the above mentioned baby.

But Haaretz outperforms even itself in its reporting about the Jimmy Carter debacle at Yeshiva University.

As you probably know, Yeshiva University in NY evidently did not lose enough money and support in the huge Madoff scandal and so has decided to finish Madoff’s work by losing all remaining support for the institution by granting a special Law School award to Jimmy Carter. Not only was Carter the very worst president in the entire history of the United States, but he is also an open anti-Semite. Since being kicked out of the White House with its indoor plumbing and being sent back to his peanut plantation, Carter has spent much of his time demonizing Israel and Jews, denouncing Israel as an “apartheid” regime, backing Islamist terrorists, legitimizing the phony “elections” in dictatorships, and seeking Israel’s extermination. So what better reason for Yeshiva University to grant him an honor? I mean, do the YU chiefs seriously think that Carter’s anti-Semitic groupies will respond to the award by raising money for the university? Maybe Yeshiva U chose Carter for its reward simply because Louis Farrakhan and David Irving were unavailable for one.

But the stupidity of Yeshiva University is nothing when compared with the spin given the story by Haaretz. According to the newspaper for the non-thinking Israeli leftist, it is all a vast right-wing conspiracy by American Jewish neocons to paint Carter as a demon. “Extremist” is the adjective used by Haaretz for any American protesting the award to Carter. It is never an adjective applied to Carter. And who are these fanatical right-wing Americans? Well, Haaretz informs us, they are lead by that notorious right-winger Alan Dershowitz, who happens to be a notorious liberal two-state-solution guy but one who knows an anti-Semitic ex-president when he sees one. Dersh says that Carter has never met a terrorist he does not like.

Haaretz adopts the jargon and rhetoric of the Neo-Nazis when it denounces the critics of the award to Carter as “Israel Firsters.” Yes, that is the term used in the article. Haaretz would never be suspected by anyone of being pro-Israel, let alone a newspaper of “Israel Firsters.” But can you imagine the NY Times or Washington Post denouncing people who are pro-American as being “America Firsters”? Among the radical right-wingers named by Haaretz as opposing the award to Carter are the Anti-Defamation League and the Simon Wiesenthal Center. These “fascists” are becoming the ugly face of Israel as seen in New York, screams the newspaper whose major stockholders include some German ex-Nazis.

Haaretz, the newspaper read by Hamas Firsters and cited all over the world as the authoritative proof that Israel is an anti-democratic apartheid regime, continues to provide ammunition to the world’s Israel Bashers. It continues to serve up its treason du jour with the lattes sipped by the Israeli yuppie Ashkenazi leftist’s who continue to battle against their own country’s survival.

Demonizing Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors.

On the left-wing Israeli website Haaretz.com, correspondent Amira Hass posted an article recently with the unwieldy title, “On an ostensible Holocaust website, the U.S. right’s opposition to Obama is the message,” in which she attacked the work of the Los Angeles-based Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors (CJHS) for its pro-Israel and anti-totalitarian stance, two positions the left cannot tolerate.

Hass wrote that CJHS caught her attention a few months ago with an email containing a “hair-raising photograph of the train tracks to Auschwitz.” Hass, herself a child of Jewish Holocaust survivors, “assumed that this group that I wasn’t familiar with somehow considered me one of their own… and I let myself read what the group had to say.” I’m pretty certain that CJHS does not consider Hass one of its own, since her work perpetuates the standard leftist lies about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In any case, what Hass then read on the site prompted her to attempt a withering response.

“On the site of Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors,” Hass wrote, “the right wing uses one of the 20th century’s greatest atrocities for political gain.” This disgusting accusation is a cynical ploy to gloss over the fact that it is the unholy alliance of the left and Islamic fundamentalists who want to diminish the historical truth of the Holocaust – or deny it altogether – for their own political gain.

“The first thing I learned” from the site, she continued, “was that I should be gravely worried by Chuck Hagel’s possible appointment as the next U.S. defense secretary.” Actually, Israel should be gravely worried, but Hass has nothing to fear, since neither she nor Hagel is a friend of our Middle East ally. Next, she read that CJHS is “committed to the promotion of Western values against the dual threats of complacency and the spread of Islam.” Hass found this amusing, claiming “that the social and biologically-based hierarchy, white supremacy, racial purity, country above all and man in service of the state and race are Western values.” If Hass considers those to be the West’s values, then she fits right in with the deranged Islamic fundamentalists whose genocidal agenda she is abetting.

She went on to complain about the CJHS website linking to politically conservative sites. “Surfing the site was like wandering through a meeting held by the American right.” How unsettling that must have been, to find herself in the virtual belly of the pro-Israel beast. She noted with disapproval that CJHS linked to an article on a different site that compared President Obama to Hitler; her concern is understandable considering that, as FrontPage’s Daniel Greenfield wrote, “Hass has repeatedly written sympathetic pieces about the genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organization whose members often revere Hitler.”

“And I wasn’t at all surprised,” Hass continued, “to find among the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors’ guests people like former ultra-right-wing MK Aryeh Eldad and right-wing Israeli group Women in Green.” In other words, Hass disapproves of staunch supporters of Israel, which says much more about her than it does about CJHS.

She went on to complain that CJHS links to articles on other sites that criticize Obama for raising taxes and threatening gun confiscation, which Americans are now realizing is an urgent goal of the radical Obama administration. Hass concludes sarcastically that CJHS believes that “to prevent a new Holocaust, it is necessary to leave untouched the free use of guns in the United States.” I’ll concede this one to her, although there is no “free use of guns” in the US, and the Founding Fathers established private gun ownership in order to defend against a tyrannical government; but yes, it’s also a good start toward staving off a new Holocaust.

Hass also was disturbed by a post on CJHS’s Facebook page which condemns “American Jews who voted for Obama against their own interests.” CJHS is right to condemn them. Obama has proven over and over again that he is an enemy of Israel and the Jews, arming the Jew-hating fundamentalist regime in Egypt, for example, with weapons that will one day be used against Israelis and Americans.

Furthermore, Hass seems suspicious that CJHS seems to consist of just one person – its founder and president:

Maybe I’m more Web-challenged than I thought, or maybe this woman really can do everything on her own, including searching the Web, organizing discussions, linking other articles, sending emails to tens of thousands of people (in her own words), writing press releases, keeping up on events and updating a Facebook page.

Hass does not name “this woman,” probably in a petty move to avoid giving her any free publicity. Allow me to name her now: Doris Wise Montrose.* Hass is correct that Doris really can and does do everything that Hass lists on her own, because she is a driven warrior against America’s and Israel’s enemies, foreign and domestic, and a passionate defender of human rights against totalitarians like Obama and Hamas.

As for the CJHS events, some of the speakers and topics CJHS has sponsored or co-sponsored for Los Angeles-area residents include, to name a few recent ones, Larry Schweikart discussing “A Patriot’s History of the Modern World”; Professor Abraham Sion on “How the Jewish Community Should Confront the Israeli Left and Arab Propaganda”; FrontPage’s own Caroline Glick on “Israel on the Eve of U.S. Elections”; and “Is Our First Amendment in Danger?” featuring Alex Kozinski, Chief Judge of the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, and Eugene Volokh, UCLA Professor of Law.

What Hass and her ilk resent is that, unlike too many Holocaust groups, Doris and CJHS are not content to merely memorialize and mourn the horrors of the past. Recognizing that Jews and Western civilization itself are facing a global hatred that threatens us anew, CJHS exists to do its part, through educational events and awareness-raising news and commentary, to prevent another Holocaust. As its motto states, “Never again is now.”

Amira Hass’s attempted condemnation of the Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors simply confirms that Doris Wise Montrose must be doing something very right.

* Full disclosure: the David Horowitz Freedom Center has co-sponsored many of CJHS’s important events, and Doris is a very close friend of mine, so I have firsthand knowledge of the courageous, critical work she does through CJHS.

Amira Hass is practically Haaretz’ designated Hamas spokeswoman. And considering that Haaretz is the left’s Always Blame Israel outlet, that is saying a lot.

Hass has repeatedly written sympathetic pieces about the genocidal anti-Semitic terrorist organization whose members often revere Hitler and even illegally snuck into Gaza to manufacture more propaganda pieces. But like many Israeli leftists, Hass also trades on a family connection to the Holocaust, even as she does her best to empower those Islamofascists whose covenant includes a call for another final Holocaust.

This time Hass (whose last name in German means ‘hatred’) chose to attack an organization of the children of Holocaust survivors and its founder.

I have participated in events by Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors and met its Doris Wise Montrose, which leads me to be even more disgusted by Amira Hass’ attack on CJHS. While Hass argues the cause of a genocidal group like Hamas, Doris Wise Montrose works tirelessly to prevent another Holocaust by Hitler’s Islamist allies.

The existence of the article proves that if nothing else, Amira Hass is desperately short of material. Even the Israeli left is running out of ways to depict Israel as a bloodthirsty monster gorging itself on Palestinian suffering. Even a dedicated hack like Hass has to struggle to find an outlet for the hatred for everything Jewish that burns inside her. A hatred that no amount of pro-terrorist propaganda can slake.

Responding to Hass’ hatred, Doris Wise Montrose wrote,

“Amira Hass, a reporter for the leftwing Israeli newspaper Haaretz, has blasted Children of Jewish Holocaust Survivors over the group’s opposition to the appointment of Chuck Hagel as U.S. Secretary of Defense. Describing CJHS’s website as an “ostensible Holocaust website,” the reporter criticized the CJHS logo for being too-heavy handed and then linked the group to among other things “Republicans’ apocalyptic war against Hagel.”

“While it might be considered unusual for a reporter caught publishing anti-Israel lies to lecture others on ethics,” said CJHS founder and president Doris Wise Montrose, referencing a May 2010 scandal in which Hass was forced to recant a report accusing Israel of expelling a Palestinian youth from the West Bank to the Gaza Strip, “and while the tone of Hass’s piece might be considered unprofessional and grating,” she continued, alluding to the use of sarcasm and feigned shock throughout the article, “it’s important to stay focused on the substance of this debate.”

“Hass didn’t actually address anything we wrote,” concluded Montrose.”

The Israeli left never addresses anything of substance. Its past is a dark territory that it is forever fleeing. Everything it has done has come undone and all it has left is its hatred for the settlers and the soldiers. Without that, the left would wither up in a corner and die.

Maariv, one of Israel’s leading newspapers, is on the verge of closing, and Ha’aretz, a far left-wing newspaper, is also under threat of closure – and that’s life in the big leagues. Israel is a small country which has a relatively large number of media outlets, so it’s not a surprise that media will have a shake-out. One wonders why newspapers being closed in a small market like Israel is worthy of international media headlines, including in The New York Times, The Guardian and other major outlets.

The answer is clear – just as Al Gore invented the Internet, if you read media reports one may believe that one of the richest Jews in the world, conservative Sheldon Adelson, is responsible for the fact that amongst other reasons, digital media is hurting print newspapers worldwide. All over the world, newspapers are seeing layoffs and feeling the effects of the economic malaise – why should anyone be surprised that it affects Israeli media?

Sheldon Adelson believes in free-enterprise and founded a free newspaper five years ago, Israel Hayom, which today has the largest weekday distribution of any Hebrew paper. Fair and square, Israel Hayom has defeated other ideological papers — including Ha’aretz (which the Prime Minister of Israel deemed an enemy of Israel and is owned by ideological far-leftists). Just as Ha’aretz invested millions in pursuit of its ideology and business to express its freedom (and money), so too did Adelson.

This is free-market economics, like it or not, and Adelson has no monopoly. Mainstream media ignore the fact that George Soros, a far-leftist who recently said, “The main obstacle to a stable and just world order is the United States,” is the one who has financial affiliations with more than 30 mainstream news outlets – including The New York Times, Washington Post, and ABC. Prominent journalists like Jill Abramson, executive editor of The New York Times and the vice president of the Washington Post, and others serve on boards of organizations that take millions from Soros.

In 2007, conservative billionaire Rupert Murdoch paid $5 billion for the Wall Street Journal—and now, the value is less, and some economists have said the Wall Street Journal was a bad financial investment. Should Murdoch blame liberals? A recent documentary by filmmaker Mark Birnbaum, “Stop the Presses: The American Newspaper in Peril,” showed the rash of closed American papers – and in Israel it’s no different.

Despite the whining of the liberal elite, “mainstream” media worldwide is indeed biased and left-wing – and Adelson has said, “We are too fair. We intended to make it fair and balanced because the other newspapers are so far to the left. The problem in education and in the press is that everybody is to the left.” And he has further added, “What political involvement? I am not involved politically in Israel. Period.” Everything Adelson has done is fair – he is simply a principled, driven man who believes it is his right to influence people.

Sheldon Adelson has said: “I suppose you could say that I live on Vince Lombardi’s belief: ‘Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.’ So, I do whatever it takes, as long as it’s moral, ethical, principled, legal.” That’s the way of the world and business, and it works that way even when the liberals don’t win.

The Israeli left-wing media's cluelessness in their own words.

At the annual American Jewish Press Association (AJPA) Conference, held recently in Philadelphia, a newsworthy session was held with Chemi Shalev, the newly appointed US correspondent for the English language edition of HaAretz.

Working with foreign journalists in Jerusalem for the past 25 years, the significance of HaAretz reaches beyond its scope as a daily newspaper in Israel.

The HaAretz English edition, sold in Israel together with the International Herald Tribune, is the paper of record for reporters who cover complexities of Middle East issues.

Therefore, the opportunity for AJPA to hear Shalev’s insights into Middle East reporting policies was significant.

After hearing Shalev’s insightful analysis of current Israeli politics and the current state of Israeli-Arab negotiations, our news agency posed a question to Shalev:

Why does HaAretz not report what the Palestinian Authority communicates to their people in their language, on the PBC TV, the PBC radio, Palestinian Authority newspapers and the Palestinian Authority schools?

After all, over the past few weeks, PBC TV has conducted daily features that promote the armed struggle to liberate all of Palestine, praise for those who martyr themselves while murdering Jews, transforming Israeli cities into Arab cities, and worse.

And then there are the new school books of the PA, which indoctrinate the next generation to liberate all of Palestine by the force of arms, while the theme of PA education remains the “right of return” to Arab villages from 1948 within the green line which no longer exist.

15 years ago, access to PBC TV and to PA school books was difficult.

Our agency would dispatch messengers to the heart of Ramallah or Gaza to buy DVDs of PBC telecasts or purchase new PA school books and then commission translations of both.

Today, all a journalist has to do to view PBC TV is to peruse the PMW or MEMRI web sites, or to do what our agency does: we paid a technician 125 shekels to adjust our TV to gain access to PBC TV.

Today, all a reporter has to do to see the new PA school books is to buy the PA school books which are sold on Salach A Din Street in Jerusalem. And the PA school books can now be seen online.

Leftist newspaper maligns Jews who try to find creative ways of buying homes from racist Arabs.

Reading a recent Ha’aretz article was stupefying — headlined: “The settler behind shadowy purchases of Palestinian land in the West Bank,” one may think that Ha’aretz had discovered a mass scandal worthy of a “shadowy” headline. In reality, what the newspaper “exposed” were the Jews who work to purchase homes for Jews to live in – because Arabs won’t sell to Jews. Sad that Ha’aretz proudly exposing patriots is a headline in the Jewish State – while anywhere else in the world not selling to someone because they are Jewish would be deemed racism.

Unfortunately, in the 21st century Jews can’t use their real names to purchase homes because Arabs kill other Arabs if they dare sell to the Jewish infidel. Reporting the story: Uri Blau (who was recently charged by Israel’s attorney general with unauthorized possession of stolen classified documents from the Israel Defense Forces), who proudly ran the first photo of a Jewish patriot who did the valiant work of ensuring Jews live in all areas of the holy State of Israel. Exposing a man who works privately to defeat racism would win awards in many countries — in Ha’aretz it’s deemed “shadowy” and “mysterious.” What’s glossed over is that every single activity they mention is completely 100% legal.

Assisting Ha’aretz and Blau shamefully in aiding the enemy is New Yorker Evelyn Hayes, who claims to be very passionate about the Land of Israel and Kever Rachel – but clearly is more concerned about Evelyn Hayes than anything else. From reading this article, one learns that Evelyn Hayes refused agreed upon nationalist mediators to collaborate with Blau and Ha’aretz – in an action which can only harm Jewish residents of these areas. Shame on Ha’aretz, Blau and Hayes.

The great Jewish religious leader Hillel, one of the most important figures in Jewish history, said: “If I am not for myself, who will be for me? And when I am for myself, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?” Reading this article, one can only say words of thanks to brave men like Benny Elon, Tzahi Mamo, Chaim Silberstein, Matti Dan, Shlomo Zwickler, and others who work to ensure that Israel remains the Jewish nation and on a daily basis fulfill the words of Hillel. These people act and work tirelessly for the people of Israel. And they do it with tremendous self-sacrifice, facing perpetual negative publicity and threats to their safety.

The infamous Israel-hater is denied entry into Israel; the Israeli Left is up in arms.

This week Noam Chomsky, the famed MIT linguist and radical political writer and activist, was denied entry into Israel. The Israeli Left is up in arms.

Boaz Okon, legal commentator for left-leaning Yediot Aharonot, Israel’s largest daily, called the barring of Chomsky “a foolish act in a…series of recent follies” that “may mark the end of Israel as a law-abiding and freedom-loving state, or at least place a large question mark over this notion.” Going on to call Chomsky a “globally recognized intellectual,” Okon claimed “it would not be exaggerated to say that the decision to silence Professor Noam Chomsky is an attempt to put an end to freedom in the State of Israel.”

For his efforts, Okon made it to the New York Times where he was quoted by its Israel correspondent Ethan Bronner. Bronner called Chomsky “an outspoken critic both of American and Israeli policy.” Bronner was also able to quote Mark Regev, spokesman for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, that “The idea that Israel is preventing people from entering whose opinions are critical of the state is ludicrous; it is not happening. This was a mishap. A guy at the border overstepped his authority.”

In Bronner’s telling, “Mr. Regev suggested that if Professor Chomsky tried to enter again, he would succeed.”

If it wasn’t paranoid, one might suspect that even the “right-wing” Netanyahu government has a special department for tripping up people who are loyal to Israel and want to defend it. In 2008—under the left-of-center Olmert government—Israel barred two other virulent enemies, Richard Falk and Chomsky’s disciple Norman Finkelstein, from entering. Regev—in the name of his boss—should either explain that those, too, were mistakes and Israel should gladly welcome all of its worst slanderers, or not speak until he and his boss work out some sort of coherent policy.

But to get back to the Israeli Left’s reactions, Bradley Burston of the far-Left daily Haaretz also quoted Okon on the barring of Chomsky. In doing so, Burston kicked off an 1100-word diatribe against Israel as a “state headed for fascism” that uses the words fascism, fascist, and fascistic a total of twelve times, including calling Chomsky’s exclusion “fascism by rubber stamp.” Another Haaretz commentator, Gideon Levy, was more precise, asserting that “When Israel closes its gates to anyone who doesn’t fall in line with our official positions, we are quickly becoming similar to North Korea.”

But the honors went to Haaretz’s editorial on the issue, haughtily titled “Declaring War on the Intellect: Israel and Noam Chomsky.”

“By stopping the illustrious American scholar Prof. Noam Chomsky at the Allenby Bridge,” Haaretz wrote,

and barring his entry into Israel and the Palestinian Authority, the government’s outrageous treatment of those with the audacity to criticize its policies has reached new heights. Israel looks like a bully who has been insulted by a superior intellect and is now trying to fight it, arrest it and expel it.

Going on to call Chomsky “a controversial and bold intellectual” who “bluntly and acerbically attacks any government that he thinks deserves it,” Haaretz said it would be

hard to imagine any country that would not feel honored to be visited by Chomsky, apart from Israel, which has its own accounts to settle with him…. Chomsky has roundly condemned the occupation and displayed sympathy for the Palestinian struggle against it.… Israel, however, has lost its last remnants of tolerance for anyone who does not join its shrinking chorus of supporters.

So there you have it. Chomsky, according to Okon, Bronner, Regev (speaking for Netanyahu), Burston, Levy, and Haaretz is at most a “critic,” but more significantly, for some of them, an “illustrious scholar,” a “superior intellect,” and a “bold intellectual” whose presence should honor anyone including the state of Israel, which could only have barred him in an act of careless folly or fascistic madness.

Who, actually, is Noam Chomsky? This useful overview notes, among much else, his admiration and apologetics, sustained over a decade and a half, for the genocidal Pol Pot regime in Cambodia. Closer to Israeli concerns, Chomsky—an American Jew who lived briefly in Israel during the 1960s and knows Hebrew—has made the following statements (again, among many others) over the years, each of them documented on this site:

* “I see no anti-Semitic implications in denial of the existence of gas chambers, or even denial of the holocaust. Nor would there be anti-Semitic implications, per se, in the claim that the holocaust (whether one believes it took place or not) is being exploited, viciously so, by apologists for Israeli repression and violence.”

* “I objected to the founding of Israel as a Jewish state. I don’t think a Jewish or Christian or Islamic state is a proper concept. I would object to the United States as a Christian state.”

* “The Hebrew press is much more open than the English language press, and there’s a very obvious reason: Hebrew is a secret language, you only read it if you’re inside the tribe.”

* “Of course [suicide bombers are] terrorists and there’s been Palestinian terrorism all the way through. I have always opposed it….But it’s very small as compared with the US-backed Israeli terrorism.”

Robert Wistrich, a historian at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, notes in A Lethal Obsession, a widely praised overview of contemporary anti-Semitism published in January, that Chomsky “stooped to the level of offering support to [notorious French] Holocaust denier Robert Faurisson and defending his credentials.” Chomsky, who contributed a preface to a 1980 Holocaust-denial book by Faurisson,

told Le Monde on January 19, 1981, that he was personally “agnostic” about the Nazi massacres. He did not want people “to have religious or dogmatic positions about the existence of the Holocaust.” This, too, was grist to the mill of many Holocaust deniers and neo-Nazis, who eagerly promote Chomsky’s books and speeches condemning American and Israeli imperialism on their websites. They understand that Chomsky’s backing for Faurisson and such left-wing libertarian Holocaust deniers as Pierre Guillaume has considerably bolstered the “revisionist” cause. (Wistrich, A Lethal Obsession, Random House, 2010, p. 532)

Two and a half decades later, in May 2006, Chomsky’s enthusiasm for Jew-hatred was again on display when he paid a fawning visit to Hezbollah in Lebanon and said “Hezbollah’s insistence on keeping its arms is justified.” Chomsky was also quoted (see the video) as telling his hosts that “the victory achieved by the resistance is a victory for all the peoples that fight injustice and oppression,” and had himself filmed standing beside a destroyed Israeli vehicle.

Less than two months later, when Hezbollah used its arms to mount the murderous cross-border attack against Israel that triggered the Second Lebanon War, Chomsky told a radio interviewer that he hoped Hezbollah’s actions could yield results.

Okon’s and Haaretz’s reactions, then, to Israel denying entry to Chomsky—an apologist for genocide, exponent and promoter of Holocaust denial, and terror groupie—can at best be ascribed to gross, inexcusable ignorance. Or, if it is not ignorance, one does not like to think what else could drive them to verbally pommel their government and country and extol Chomsky in this episode.

And, to repeat, the Prime Minister’s Office has acquitted itself miserably in this affair as well.

A leftist editor smears a fallen Israeli solider as a "jihadist."

“I don’t want to live in the country of Captain Eliraz Peretz or his mother. My consolations to the family…a family of Jihadist Fascists, and don’t dare let anyone say he was killed for my sake.”

The above quote is from Uri Tuval, editor of the magazine section of Israel’s left-wing daily Haaretz. He said it in a Facebook chat with other left-wing journalists, and even some members of his milieu were said to be dismayed at his words. This mini-scandal comes at a time when Haaretz is under attack for its central role in the much larger scandal of the Anat Kam espionage affair.

Dishonoring the dead: Haaretz editor Uri Tuval.

Eliraz Peretz was a 32-year-old Israeli soldier who was killed last month in a gunfight with terrorists in Gaza. His older brother Uriel died in combat in Lebanon in 1998. Miriam Peretz, the mother, was interviewed on Israeli TV after Eliraz’s death (it being customary in Israel to interview close relatives after the loss of soldiers). The Peretz family are observant Jews; Eliraz lived in the West Bank settlement of Eli.

To his credit, Tuval wrote a gracious apology to the Peretz family. He noted that he too is a soldier and that his father was killed in the 1973 Yom Kippur War. He said he had “stated my personal opinion on the reality we face in a provocative manner, on a forum that I viewed as private,” and that “We seem to disagree over the best way in which to build our national home.”

But if Tuval’s words were indeed meant to be private, those of two other Israeli leftists, playwright Shmuel Hasfari and attorney Eldad Yaniv, were meant for as much public consumption as possible. Hasfari and Yaniv have self-published a manifesto called The National Left as a blue-and-white booklet timed for Israel’s Independence Day (Monday evening and Tuesday). They got Tsomet Sfarim, Israel’s largest bookstore chain, to offer it at the checkout counter for a mere shekel ($0.27) along with a small blue-and-white flag.

Within days, however, Tsomet Sfarim announced that they had pulled the book because of complaints. As the company put it: “Tsomet Sfarim is a chain for all of the people of Israel and has no political affiliation. It is never responsible for the content of the books that are distributed in its stores. Because we received many complaints that the book hurts the feelings of some of our customers, we decided to stop selling it.”

The complaints centered on statements in the book that, again, focused on the bête noire of the Left—“settlers,” or Israelis, particularly religious, ideological ones, who live in Judea and Samaria (the West Bank).

For Hasfari and Yaniv these people—known for their high rates of volunteering for the army’s officer corps and elite combat units—are “extremist crazies and wackos [who] don’t even pay [Palestinians who work in the settlements] minimum wage, because they’re just ‘Aye-rabs.’” But even this kind of verbiage is too mild for Hasfari and Yaniv, who go on to say:

“The settlers operate on a different type of fuel, which is called messianism. Their god appeared at once and defeated their enemies. After his mishap during the Holocaust—he is back and mightier than ever….”

No one realized that the “new pioneers” were possessed by demons of messianic madness. Think about the brainwashed minds, hypnotized zombies, gangs of horny teenagers forcing themselves on the country….”

Viewing themselves as the pinnacle of enlightenment, it doesn’t occur to Hasfari and Yaniv that their own words display bigotry of the crudest kind for which even mockery of God and the Holocaust is not going too far. From the fact that such words quickly ignited public protest they learn—nothing, having already bragged that they’ll go on offering their manifesto for free at university campuses and other locales.

Meanwhile the settler community, which includes large numbers of secular and ultra-Orthodox Israelis along with the religious Zionists for whom Tuval, Hasfari, Yaniv and their ilk have such special loathing, has reached 300,000 and keeps growing. As Independence Day approaches, ideally the anti-settler Left would liberate itself from its failed dream of keeping the post-1967 lands Jew-free and learn to relate to this demographic with tolerance—which might even include asking why, in a theoretical Palestinian state, its presence as a minority should be so unthinkable.

No chance. The Israeli Left has fallen on hard times, having captured 16 out of 120 Knesset seats in the 2009 elections. Socialism has faded and most Israelis have awoken from “peace” dreams. Hatred, then, is too precious to give up.

He is not his father’s son.

In a stunning revelation, the son of a Hamas founder told an Israeli newspaper this week that he once served as an Israeli intelligence agent. Mosab Hassan Yousef, 32, told the Israeli daily Haaretz that he spied for more than ten years on the Iranian-backed terrorist organization that has ruled the Gaza Strip since 2007.

In his role as Israeli informant, Yousef is credited with helping arrest high-ranking terrorists. Much more important, however, is that he also saved the lives of “hundreds of innocent people” with the information he provided the Israeli intelligence service, Shin Bet, about pending suicide attacks. “So many people owe their lives to him and don’t even know it,” Yousef’s unidentified Shin Bet handler told Haaretz.

Yousef’s Israeli handler went on to relate how the “Green Prince” – Yousef’s codename, taken from the color for Islam – personally picked out a suicide bomber in a Ramallah square and followed him until an arrest could be made.

Next week, Yousef’s memoir about his experiences in the terrorist organization will be published in the United States. Aptly named Son Of Hamas, the book is described on Yousef’s Facebook site as “a gripping account of terror, betrayal, political intrigue, and unthinkable choices.”

A tale of terror: Mosab Hassan Yousef’s memoir will be released next week.

Besides offering a uniquely intimate glimpse into the murderous world of Islamic terrorism, Yousef’s revelation of his Israeli spy past represents another serious blow to Hamas. This week, police in Dubai indicated the senior Hamas operative killed in his hotel room in the emirate last month, reputedly by an Israeli hit team, may in fact have been set up with information provided by the terrorist organization itself.

Yousef’s admission, coming so soon after the Dubai reversal, will likely cause Hamas members to wonder how deeply their ranks have been penetrated by informers. History shows that terrorist organizations, such as the pre-revolutionary Bolshevik Party in Russia, suspecting such infiltration among their membership, sometimes carried out murderous purges that often claimed the innocent as well as the guilty. A few more such Israeli intelligence coups may see the same thing occur inside Hamas.

Shin Bet recruited Yousef in an Israeli prison in 1996. Thanks to his competence and professionalism, he came to be regarded as a very valuable asset, his existence known to only a handful of Shin Bet operatives. “His grasp of intelligence matters was just as good as ours – the ideas, the insights. One insight of his was worth 1,000 hours of thought by top experts,” said his former handler.

But what struck the Israelis the most was that in the shadow world of terrorism, where most things have a price, Yousef did not accept any payment. “The amazing thing is that none of his actions were done for money,” said the handler. “He did things he believed in. He wanted to save lives.”

The probable reason for a Muslim terrorist’s unusual regard for the sanctity of human life may prove to be as interesting a story as Yousef’s spying activities with Hamas. Over a decade ago, Yousef, who now lives in California, converted to Christianity.

While the conversion of Muslims to Christianity is less well known than from Christianity to Islam, it does occur. One of the reason Christian groups often keep them secret, or don’t keep statistics, is that Muslim apostates are subject to the death penalty under Islam’s Sharia law. So, even if Yousef had never worked for Israeli intelligence, his life would still be in peril. But the fact that a high-ranking Hamas member with such a sterling terrorist pedigree (his father is currently serving a six-year sentence in an Israeli prison) would convert, while highly unusual, is not unknown. There are reports that even members of the Muslim Brotherhood have abandoned their Islamic faith.

One such Brotherhood member, who once burned a church in his Middle Eastern country, converted after he was asked by a senior Brotherhood member to read the New Testament and write an anti-Cristian tract. Instead of producing the assigned anti-Christian screed, however, he was so drawn to Christ’s personility and the Bible’s central messages of love and forgiveness, that he not only converted but became an evangelist with another Brotherhood convert. In a grim warning to Muslim apostates, both were later hunted down by their former coreligionists and savagely murdered.

In discovering his new faith, Yousef appears also to have discovered a new value for human life. In particular, he has become an outspoken advocate of Israel’s security interests. Besides his life-saving work for Shin Bet, Yousef has strongly apposed any effort by Israel to exchange imprisoned terrorists for the Israeli soldier, Gilad Schalit, whom Hamas kidnapped three years ago.

Yousef knows probably better than anyone more people will be killed in terrorist attacks if the prisoners are released. He has already blamed Hamas for killing Palestinians and not Israel. His opposition is such that he told Haaretz he was willing to “put on an army uniform and join Israel’s Special Forces in order to liberate Gilad Schalit.” As Yousef puts it, “We wasted so many years with investigations and arrests to capture the very terrorists that they now want to release in return for Schalit. That must not be done.”

As for those who continue to counsel Israel to bend to the terrorists’ demands, Yousef speaks a hard truth founded on years of personal experience: “Hamas cannot make peace with the Israelis. That is against what their God tells them. It is impossible to make peace with infidels.” Those are hardly the words one would expect to hear from the son of a Hamas founder, but Mosab Hassan Yousef’s tale is extraordinary – not least because he has lived to tell it.

He was Israel's most valuable spy inside Hamas – and certainly the most unlikely.

For more than a decade, Mosab Hassan Yousef disrupted dozens of suicide bombings and assassination attempts by the militant group, saving hundreds of lives.

Infiltrating the upper echelons of Hamas came relatively easy for Yousef: He is the son of Hamas founder Sheikh Hassan Yousef.

“So many people owe him their life and don't even know it,” an Israeli security agent told the Israeli daily Haaretz on Wednesday.

“People who did a lot less were awarded the Israel Security Prize. He certainly deserves it.”

Yousef's astonishing career as a spy is chronicled in his soon-to-be released memoir, “Son of Hamas.”

Yousef, 32, was recruited by the Shin Bet, Israel's internal security agency, in 1996 after he was arrested.

Inside Israel's intelligence community, he became known as the Green Prince – a nod to the color of Hamas' flag and his pedigree as the son of one of its founders.

Yousef's exploits are the stuff of legend.

He once picked out a suicide bomber in a crowded square after the Shin Bet received a vague tip.

About 10 years ago, in the Palestinian uprising known as the Second Intifadeh, Yousef supplied intelligence that led to the arrests of several key Palestinian leaders.

The Prime Minister buffers Israel’s strength -- while great danger looms.

“Benjamin Netanyahu, a year into your term, observers seem to agree: You’re an impressive survivor, but just a survivor. The government you lead has no vision, no destination. It’s not going anywhere.”

Thus Ari Shavit, journalist for Israel’s left-wing daily Haaretz, to Prime Minister Netanyahu early this week. Netanyahu (who took office, actually, last March 31 and has been prime minister less than a year) naturally responded by denying the charge, saying “My vision is of an Israel that is a world technological superpower, anchored in values, reaching peace from strength…. we are working to jump-start the economy, to augment our security and to strengthen Israel through inculcating basic national values.”

Realizing that the charge of “lack of vision” from the Left means mainly “lack of negotiations with the Palestinians and Syria to hand them major Israeli strategic assets,” Netanyahu said the Palestinians and Syria were “present[ing] us with extremist preconditions that they did not present to earlier Israeli governments…. The critics expect us to accept the Palestinian and Syrian dictates; they describe the acceptance of those dictates as a vision. I don’t see it as a vision.”

Tentatively, after almost a year in office, Netanyahu can be described as handling the Palestinian situation artfully: positioning himself as a perceived moderate by expressing openness to the idea of a Palestinian state, while hedging such a hypothetical state with requirements (genuine acceptance of Israel, effective demilitarization, Israeli retention of considerable areas) that no Palestinian leader would accept; helping to position Palestinian Authority president Mahmoud Abbas as the intransigent party who—reportedly to American, if not European, annoyance—stonewalls talks.

As for the “Syrian track,” those with an awareness of the Golan Heights’ importance for Israel and of the radical nature of Bashar Assad’s regime can only welcome the fact that Netanyahu’s government has not resumed the previous Olmert government’s Turkish-mediated talks with Damascus.

What of Netanyahu’s other claims? Has Israel been “augmenting its security” this past year or just marking time while Hamas and Hezbollah continue their arms buildups on its borders? Israeli analyst Guy Bechor claims it’s the former, and notes that

“our borders are quieter than they have been in many years…. The IDF is training today as it has not done in dozens of years. Every day, from morning till night: Tanks, airplanes, helicopters, live-fire drills…. [The IDF] is now the first military in the world equipping its tanks with anti-missile systems, which are changing the rules of war. The IDF is also equipping itself with new APCs, advanced airplanes, and amazing technological systems, while Hezbollah and Syria are still stuck in the ’80s and ’90s…. Moreover, a series of daring assassinations attributed to Israel is prompting personal fears among axis-of-evil leaders.”

For Bechor, the upshot is that:

“Our enemies realize that the days where Israel conducted itself as a state without honor willing to give in to the advances of those who deceive it are over. They realize that Israel has matured, learned the art of creating deterrence, and that it is here to stay.”

Bechor’s analysis doesn’t say why enemies like Hamas, Hezbollah, and their patron Iran keep building ever-more-dangerous capacities if they’re simply cowed. But it is true that under the Netanyahu government, a trajectory of renewed deterrence has been well sustained up to such recent successes as the presumed Dubai exploit and the air force’s unveiling of a “super-drone” that can reach Iran.

As for “inculcating basic national values,” Netanyahu had in mind a new, 600-million-shekel program launched by his government to restore historical sites and reconnect young Israelis with both the ancient Israelite and modern Zionist past. But whether or not such a massive effort is necessary—and most of the country’s leadership agrees that it is—there are already signs of a revived self-confidence and assertiveness.

The Foreign Ministry’s reported snubbing of a congressional delegation sent by the faux “pro-Israel” group J Street was one such sign. Another is a brand-new, entirely novel initiative by the Foreign Ministry to encourage ordinary Israelis to present Israel’s case abroad with the help of a new website (in Hebrew) that had already been visited by 130,000 in its first five days.

There are also signs of a mounting, well-deserved intolerance toward the traitorous element from within: Tel Aviv University has come under fierce pressure to fire radical-Left academics who campaign abroad for a boycott of Israel; and the left-wing NGO known as the New Israel Fund is likewise under fire and Knesset investigation for funding anti-Israeli groups including some on which the Goldstone commission relied for its libelous report.

Netanyahu was right, then, to reject the allegation that his only real goal is now his own political survival as he leads a government that is “not going anywhere.” In less than a year his government has been rebuilding Israel’s strength on many fronts. But great danger still looms.

How radical critics distort Israel's alleged “siege” of Palestinian territory.

The past year brought a fresh wave of anti-Israel rhetoric and accusations, most of which cited Israel’s “siege” of Gaza during last winter’s Operation Cast Lead as evidence of Israel’s injustice toward the Palestinians. The international press frequently echoed calls by human rights groups and activists to “end Israel’s illegal blockade” and “liberate Gaza.” Such messages have been conceived to undermine Israel and present a very misleading picture of the actual Gaza conflict.

In a typical blockade, no supplies would be allowed to enter into enemy territory. Similarly, most English dictionaries define siege as an “act or process of surrounding and attacking a fortified place in such a way as to isolate it from help and supplies.” But in fact Israel has allowed substantial shipments of aid into Gaza. Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ website has reported that in 2009 alone, Israel allowed 703, 224 tons of humanitarian aid and 105,600,128 liters of fuel to be delivered into the Gaza Strip following Operation Cast Lead.

“The IDF invested major resources to enable the flow of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip,” said Col. Moshe Levi, the head of the IDF’s Gaza Coordination and Liaison Administration, in November 2009. According to Levi, humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip increased by 900 percent compared to the previous year. Over 22, 893 humanitarian aid trucks entered into Gaza throughout 2009.

All of this has been pointedly ignored by Israel’s critics. Most recently, the Gaza Freedom March illustrated the way in which pro-Palestinian organizations and left-wing groups have been able to use the international press and media to communicate their Gaza narrative using the “blockade” and “siege” narrative. Organized by Code Pink’s co-founder, Medea Benjamin, who also happens to be Jewish, the Gaza Freedom March received worldwide media attention as protestors set to break the “siege” of Gaza.

The march was able to attract some well-known celebrities, like Roger Walters of Pink Floyd and American novelist Alice Walker. But it was not the support of these two celebrities and others like them that attracted the attention of the press. The Gaza Freedom March organizers had Hedy Epstein, an 85-year old Holocaust survivor and pro-Palestinian activist affiliated with the radical International Solidarity Movement, put in the spotlight for their cause. When Epstein declared a hunger strike to support the Gaza Freedom March, she became an instant international poster girl for the march and made headlines across the world. In its reports about the Gaza Freedom March, the Huffington Post quoted Epstein explaining her support for the Palestinians by likening Israel to Nazi Germany. “[E]everything is due to the Holocaust,” Epstein explained. “But Israel is not being persecuted now. Israel is now the persecutor.”

Unfortunately, those who support the Gaza Freedom March and Palestinian rights, like Hedy Epstein and Medea Benjamin, disregard the other side of the Mideast conflict. Operation Cast Lead took place to stop the thousands of Gaza rockets striking Israeli schools, playgrounds, homes and communities each year. Equally absurd is the way such groups ignore Israeli policies that are set to ensure Palestinians’ access to humanitarian aid and goods – despite the fact that Palestinian terror attacks continue on the Israeli border crossings through which these goods pass.

The original intention of the Gaza Freedom March protestors was to demonstrate that Israel was the sole cause of hardship for Gaza’s Palestinians. Inadvertently, the Gaza Freedom March actually brought to light the siege-like policies of Hamas, the extremist Islamic regime that took over Gaza in 2007.

Haaretz reported earlier this month the Hamas government imposed a “siege” of its own on Gaza residents, prohibiting them from providing lodgings to several hundred international protestors. According to the article, “tough, Hamas security men,” accompanied the peaceful activists during their visit to Gaza and blocked them from speaking with ordinary Gazan residents. “The march turned into nothing more than a ritual, an opportunity for Hamas cabinet ministers to get decent media coverage in the company of Western demonstrators. Hamas hijacked the initiative and we gave in,” said one protestor quoted in the article.

There were barely any Palestinians who took part in the Gaza Freedom March, and absolutely no Palestinian women. Italian photojournalist Anna Selini reported that most of the marchers were international supporters. “Hamas did not encourage, even discouraged local people from participating,” Selini said. Haaretz has similarly reported that activists got the impression that “non-Hamas residents live in fear, and are afraid to speak or identify themselves by name.

This is not surprising. In December 2008, the Hamas parliament imposed Islamic Sharia law onto the Palestinian judicial system. Hamas punishments for Palestinian offenders include whipping, severing hands for stealing, crucifixion and even hanging. Few if any among the 1,300 international protestors of Israel’s alleged repression of Gaza realized that their message of freedom for Gaza would have been far more effective had it been directed towards Hamas.

Obama administration “anti-Semitism” czar Hannah Rosenthal makes non-liberal Jews her first target.

From Van Jones to Valerie Jarrett, the Obama has made a series of politically extreme personnel appointments that it has since come to regret. Its latest hire bids fair to continue the pattern. President Obama has appointed an “anti-Semitism czar,” Hannah Rosenthal, who appears singularly unqualified for the job. Her first target of criticism has not been an anti-Semitic exponent or event. Rather, it is Israel’s Jewish ambassador to the U.S., Michael Oren, who has drawn her ire for the offense of disparaging a liberal group with which Rosenthal has been affiliated.

Not surprisingly for a liberal-Democratic administration, Rosenthal has a liberal-Democratic background. She worked for the Department of Health and Human Services during the Clinton administration, and in 1992 and 1996 was a leader of the Wisconsin Clinton-Gore campaigns. From 2000 to 2005 she was executive director of the liberal Jewish Council for Public Affairs. More recently she’s been on the advisory council of the ostensibly “pro-Israel, pro-peace” J Street and JStreetPAC.

Ideally, it shouldn’t matter. Isn’t “to monitor and combat anti-Semitism”—from the “anti-Semitism czar’s” official job title—a bipartisan concern for Jews and a consensus concern for all decent people? Unfortunately, it’s not that simple. Some Jews define themselves highly invidiously in opposition to other Jews. Rosenthal appears to be one of them.

As the Jewish Press noted in an editorial,

“Speaking several years ago on the sharp increase in anti-Semitic incidents in Europe after the outbreak of the Second Intifada, [Rosenthal] said:

“‘I’ll tell you point-blank; I have two grown daughters, and I didn’t think that my kids were going to have to deal with the same anti-Semitism that I did as the daughter of Holocaust survivors. It’s a scary time, with people losing the ability to differentiate between a Jew, any Jew, and what’s going on in Israel.’”

As Michael Goldfarb observes,

“Parse that quote and it’s pretty clear what Rosenthal is saying—the Israelis have it coming, but the rest of the world needs to distinguish between the good progressive Jews who are not living on Palestinian land and the Israeli Jews who are committing daily atrocities in the name of colonialism and occupation.”

To that must be added Rosenthal’s affiliation, in itself, with J Street. Indeed, the Obama administration likes J Street and sent National Security Adviser James Jones to give the keynote address at its October conference. That doesn’t change the fact that J Street has taken strange positions such as favoring the staging of the anti-Semitic play Seven Jewish Children and the (abortive) appointment of the anti-Israeli diplomat Chas Freeman as chairman of the National Intelligence Council.

Or as Israeli ambassador Michael Oren recently put it, J Street is “a unique problem in that it not only opposes one policy of one Israeli government, it opposes all policies of all Israeli governments….” As Oren went on to note, that has included criticizing Israel’s campaign in Gaza last winter, calling to include Hamas in peace talks, failing to reject the Goldstone report, and opposing sanctions on Iran.

And it is Hannah Rosenthal’s recent criticism of Oren’s remarks that has prompted a storm of anger and protest from Israeli and U.S. officials as well as American Jewish leaders.

Last week Rosenthal told Israel’s left-wing daily Haaretz that Oren’s statements against J Street were “most unfortunate” and that Oren, who declined J Street’s invitation to speak at its October conference, “would have learned a lot” by participating.

In response, Haaretz reports in a subsequent article, “Senior Israeli officials told their American colleagues that it was unacceptable for an administration official to publicly criticize Israel’s ambassador over his relationship with Jewish organizations.”

For its part, “the White House asked the State Department to issue a clarification notice.” And “Alan Solow, chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major Jewish Organizations and a confidant of…Obama issued a condemnation of Rosenthal’s remarks, casting doubt over her ability to fulfill her responsibilities as an opponent of anti-Semitism.”

While the complaints rightly focus on the inappropriateness of the anti-Semitism czar’s criticism of the Israeli ambassador, there is much else in Rosenthal’s quoted remarks to Haaretz that calls into question her suitability for her new post.

As when—apparently also in connection to Oren’s declining to address J Street—she “said she opposes blurring the lines between anti-Semitism and criticism of Israel. ‘It is not 1939,’ she said. ‘We have the state of Israel. We have laws in countries that are holding people accountable.’” This appears oddly inane, since Oren has never accused J Street of anti-Semitism.

Or when she says:

“We need to have as many people coming together to try and put an end to this crisis, the matzav [i.e., Israel’s ongoing conflict with some of its neighbors] cannot continue—it’s unacceptable and that’s why I always paid my membership to AIPAC, but I have always paid my membership to Americans for Peace Now—because they all need to be supported and they all need to be at the table.”

Or:

“I lived in Israel in 1973 in the bomb shelters. I don’t want my kids or my grandchildren to have to ever come visit their homeland and to live in a bomb shelter—that is what I mean when I say the matzav…. Sometimes I wonder what it does to the psyche of people and children to know that they have to know where the nearest bomb shelter is—that’s not okay. As a peace loving person and as a Jew who wants my kids to feel comfortable here—I think that’s what I mean that the matzav cannot continue.”

It’s peculiarly muddled, but she seems to be saying that everyone should be open to, and ultimately embrace, a liberal-dovish view of Israel’s conflict with some of its neighbors, because then the conflict would go away. Finding the situation “unacceptable,” not wanting children to live near bomb shelters or even be exposed to them on a visit, is somehow connected to ending the conflict. In other words, it’s Jews—bad Jews like Oren, or the Israeli government—who are responsible for keeping it going.

For the anti-Semitism czar, the enemy of the Jews or at least of Israel is not the anti-Semites, the violent attackers of Israel, but the Jews themselves – or at least the bad ones who don’t embrace J Street’s outlook and even find it objectionable.

That means Rosenthal lacks exactly what she ought to have: a clear, reality-attuned grasp of the actual, grim situation of Jew-and Israel-hatred in today’s world. And it means the Obama administration has failed to make a wise choice even for the seemingly nonpartisan task of “monitoring and combating anti-Semitism.” Instead, it has appointed a left-wing partisan who promotes the liberal delusions that help anti-Semitism thrive.

Hollow posturing from a terror-supporting, anti-Semitic regime.

It’s happening yet again. Syria, while simultaneously aiding and facilitating anti-American, anti-Israeli, and general anti-Western terror, is again trying to prettify its image in the West by, among other things, conveying an interest in “peace talks with Israel.”

Not only that, but Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee of the Knesset on Monday that Syria “is now willing to negotiate without preconditions”—meaning Damascus is no longer demanding, as in the past, that Israel concede the entire Golan Heights as a condition for starting talks in the first place.

Lest the excitement get unbearable, Netanyahu acknowledged that French president Nicolas Sarkozy had told him that “the Syrians…do not want to negotiate directly, only via a mediator. I replied to Sarkozy, ‘I prefer direct negotiations, but if the Syrians want mediation, you mediate.’”

Sarkozy, however, told Netanyahu that the Syrian choice of mediator was not himself, but Turkey—already a monkey wrench in the works?

Although Turkey mediated the latest round of indirect Israeli-Syrian “talks” in 2007 while Ehud Olmert was still Israeli prime minister, since then Turkey’s star has not shone brightly in Israeli skies. During the Gaza war, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan accused Israel of “perpetrating inhuman actions [that] Allah will sooner or later punish,” further stoking anti-Semitic agitation against Turkey’s Jewish community. In October Turkey ousted Israel from a planned NATO military exercise, prompting the United States and Italy to withdraw as well. Israeli-Turkish relations are currently—at best—in rescue mode.

But for Israel’s left-wing daily Haaretz—which, on Tuesday, gave major billing to Netanyahu’s words about talks with Syria—such details are, as usual, nothing to dampen the “peace” palpitations. Also on Tuesday Haaretz ran an op-ed by Hebrew University professor Elie Podeh complaining that “On peace with Syria, Israeli leaders only talk the talk.” Haaretz, particularly its English website, is one of the main forces in the world propagating the notion that the Arab Middle East is seeking peace with Israel while Israel is the obstacle, and this op-ed fits squarely in that inglorious tradition.

“Making do with noises about peace has a number of advantages,” Podeh grouses.

“Psychologically, it gives our leaders, and perhaps some of our citizens, the feeling that Israel really wants peace, while the other side just talks about it…. different pretexts are given for not negotiating with Syrian President Bashar Assad: His government bankrolls terror attacks, it’s in a strategic alliance with Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas, all he wants is to dip his toes in the Kinneret [i.e., regain the eastern shore of Lake Kinneret for Syria], and so on.

Without belittling the importance of these matters, it should be stressed that if Anwar Sadat’s positions had been scrutinized like this, there would have been no peace deal with Egypt….”

Well, not exactly. By 1977, when Sadat’s diplomatic overtures to Israel began, Egypt had already ended its alliance with the Soviet Union and was looking to realign with the West. A proper analogy would be Syria having already removed itself from the Iranian axis and then showing an interest in talks with Israel. But again, why look too closely at the truth.

If one did that, one might also want to check into this latest dispatch by Israel’s Intelligence and Terrorism Information Center, which reports that as recently as December 1, “Radio Damascus broadcast particularly offensive anti-Semitic propaganda employing The Protocols of the Elders of Zion and reviling Jewish religious figures.”

After setting forth the unlovely details, the ITIC notes that:

The article is the rule rather than the exception in the Syrian media, which is generally characterized by strong anti-Israeli propaganda laced with blatant anti-Semitic themes [and is] subject to the strict supervision of the Syrian regime. Bashar Assad’s regime proclaims its desire for peace with Israel as a strategic choice, and has again suggested the renewal of negotiations with Israel (on Syria’s terms). However, the regime not only does not make the slightest effort to prepare Syrian public opinion for coexistence with Israel and the normalization of relations between the two countries, it consistently permits and even encourages strong anti-Israeli and anti-Semitic propaganda and incitement.

Although one can’t expect Israel’s perennial peace inebriates to pay much mind to such things, one can expect better from Jerusalem. In fielding this latest transparently cynical “overture” from Assad, the highly image-conscious Netanyahu clearly sees another opportunity to disprove his own “hard-line” profile and build his credentials as a peace-seeker. He should not, at the same time, help Assad’s effort to get himself in the West’s wholly undeserved good graces.
