The land of enlightenment becomes the land of darkness.

The Land of Enlightenment is fast becoming the land of darkness for France’s Jewish citizens.

And many in the French Jewish community have been aware of this sad situation for some time, a realization that was reinforced by the attack on two synagogues by Muslim rioters in Paris last summer during the Gaza conflict. But the latest shocking, anti-Semitic crime that occurred early in December in the same city has deepened the community’s feeling that the possibility of living peaceful lives with a Jewish identity in France is rapidly disappearing.

The latest outrage produced by France’s growing anti-Semitic climate, found especially in its Muslim community, concerns the brutal and horrifying robbery of a Jewish family in their home in Creteil, a Parisian suburb. Three gloved and masked men, armed with pistols and a sawed-off shotgun, gained entrance to the family’s apartment after ringing the doorbell. Present in the apartment were a young man, 21, and his 19-year-old girlfriend, who answered the door. Both were immediately tied up and robbed of jewellery, cellphones, computers and bank cards.

“They said they knew we had cash in the flat ‘because Jews have money and they never keep it in the bank’,” the young man, identified only as Jonathan, said in an interview on French radio.

But the worst was yet to come. While one of the robbers left to use the bank cards, the man and his girlfriend were placed in different rooms, and the young woman was then raped.

Police arrested the suspects soon after the robbery, while a fourth accomplice is being sought. French law does not allow the immediate publication of their identities; but a German newspaper reported their first names as Ladji, Yazine and Omar, while a British publication stated two were “of African and North African origin.”

French Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve stated the “anti-Semitic character” of the attack “appeared confirmed.” Unsurprisingly, the savagery perpetrated on the young Jewish couple also may not have been the gang’s first violent, anti-Semitic crime. Police suspect the criminals of having beaten a man in his seventies in Creteil in November because he was Jewish. Two young Jews, aged 18 and 23, were also viciously assaulted last May in the same suburb, which is home to many Parisian Jews. The two victims had just left their synagogue on a Saturday evening. Their assailants are unknown.

Regarding the home invasion, it was reported the gang had been monitoring their target for some time. It was reported that a couple of days before the robbery, one of the criminals had even gone to the apartment under a phony pretext to check whether Jews really lived there. The gang verified the family’s religious identity when the father appeared wearing a kippa.

“The horrible side of this aggression is its premeditation,” Haim Korsia, the grand rabbi of France, told Le Figaro newspaper. “It is not a crime of opportunity. It was thought through and reflected on. This act was ripened through a deeply rooted hatred over a length of time. It is therefore a very serious act that poses the question about the cohabitation of different persons in a same space.”

Some French Jews, however, have been answering with their feet the “cohabitation” question Korsia brings up. According to the German newspaper, Die Welt, immigration of French Jews to Israel is set to almost double over last year, when 3,280 left for the Jewish state, an increase of 70 percent over 2012. French Jews also formed the largest group of new immigrants to Israel this year. France has the largest Jewish community in Europe with an estimated 350,000 to 500,000 members.

According to Le Figaro, young, French Jewish families are also leaving France for Israel both because of the country’s increasing anti-Semitism, which, they believe, endangers their children, and the French economy’s poor performance. Parents fear putting their children into Jewish schools and summer camps because of anti-Semitic attacks. And who can blame them when one recalls French jihadist Mohammed Merah, who murdered four people, three of them children, at a Jewish school in Toulouse in 2012. Muslim rioters yelling “Death to Jews” in Paris during last summer’s anti-Israeli demonstrations have probably spurred others to head for France’s exits.

Former Soviet dissident Natan Sharansky is the director of the Jewish Agency for Israel, the country’s official immigration organization. In an interview with Die Welt, he related a telling incident concerning anti-Semitism in France and the fear it has engendered. Accompanying a plane full of French Jews immigrating to Israel last summer, he said he asked the passengers, after they had received instructions concerning how they should react to rocket attacks in their new country, whether they had any fear?

“And they answered me: ‘No, in France we had fear. That’s over with here; we don’t have to hide’,” recalled Sharansky.

Sharansky also stated in the interview that anti-Semitism in parts of Paris has become so prevalent, it is dangerous even to go for a walk wearing a kippa.

“The threat here in Israel is different. Here, one can fight for his home,” he said. “In Europe, on the other hand, especially in France, the feeling is becoming stronger and stronger among Jews that they don’t have a home there anymore.”

And they most likely won’t, at least in France, if the political reaction to the anti-Semitic outrage in Creteil is anything to go by. The right words of condolence and outrage were said afterwards by all officials about the tragedy, but solutions to counter France’s growing Jew hatred were noticeably lacking.

President Francois Hollande serves as a good example of this phenomenon. He called the rape and robbery “unbearable violence” and “an assault on all France holds dear,” adding it proves the “fight against anti-Semitism must be carried out every day.” However, what Hollande left unsaid was how this fight was to be conducted and how it could be won.

Moreover, while Hollande says anti-Semitism must be fought, his Socialist Party (SP) supports a pro-Muslim immigration policy, since the SP views France’s six million strong Muslim community as its voting and ideological constituency. An increase in Muslim immigration, however, is a disaster for any struggle against anti-Semitism, as Jew hatred is highest among French Muslims. Many arrive in France from North African and other Islamic countries already possessing a strong hatred for Jews.

Korsia found it encouraging that “the social body” in France felt revulsion over the crime in Corteil, which, to him, was a “note of hope.” France’s Grand Rabbi would now like to see both Muslims and Jews approach each other and “encourage dialogue between the religions …especially, to reinvest in the national community.”

“It is necessary to work ceaselessly to make France a place of intelligence, of sharing, of respect, and to fight against those who do not want this,” he said.

Despite Korsia’s excellent, humanitarian intentions, however, the cards appear to be stacked against him. It is difficult to see how civilised dialogue will ever stop Islamist brown shirts, steeped in a deep, SS-like Jew hatred, from committing future barbarisms similar to that in Creteil, if not worse.

But France’s people should take note. A similar, virulent and violent anti-Semitism destroyed another leading European state 70 years ago. And if Jew hatred in France is left unchecked, their country appears destined for a similar, tragic fate.

“The hate against Jews in France is only the beginning,” warns Sharansky. “History shows that there, where Jews are being excluded, other people later become victims of the same ideology.”

The video is significantly different than the three previous high production Islamic State beheading videos of Americans James Foley and Steve Sotloff and British hostage David Haines. The Algerian jihadist group kidnapped Gourdel, a 55-year-old mountaineering guide, while he was hiking in the Djurdjura National Park in Algeria. They released a video two days prior to the beheading giving France an ultimatum, either stop the aggression against the Islamic State or Gourdel would die within 24-hours. France rejected the ultimatum and the jihadists made good on their threat.

The civilian outfit does not make blood illegal to spill, and the military uniform does not make blood legal to spill. The only things that make blood illegal and legal to spill are Islam and a covenant (peace treaty, dhimma, etc.). Blood becomes legal to spill through disbelief. So whoever is a Muslim, his blood and wealth are sanctified. And whoever is a disbeliever, his wealth is legal for a Muslim to take and his blood is legal to spill. While the Obamas frequently decry the excesses of private-sector wealth, characterizing it as the product of ill-gotten gains, they have demonstrated time and time again that they have little difficulty emulating the same behavior when Americans are footing the bill. Meanwhile, incessant regulations, attacks on industry and on middle class paychecks through ObamaCare, are crushing ordinary Americans, with no end in sight.

Three hundred and forty-eight guests took part in the state dinner for President Hollande. In an uncharacteristic burst of honesty, the New York Times noted that while many presidents have used state dinners to promote America, those that have taken place during the Obama administration “have been elaborate events and criticized for expenses that have risen with the number of guests and high-cost entertainers like Beyoncé, who may waive their fees but still require equipment, lighting, technicians and even wind machines.”

Tuesday’s soiree was no exception. The event began with a reception in the State Dining Room on the second floor of the White House. A selection of cheeses and fresh vegetables were served along with Maine trout, smoked on Maine hardwood. After that, guests headed downstairs and took trolleys from the White House’s south portico, rolling across the South Lawn to a heated tent. The tent contained chandeliers, and was decorated to resemble a scene from French impressionist Claude Monet’s “Water Lilies.” Elegant place settings were accompanied by elaborate floral arrangements composed by the White House florist, who studied in Paris. The “deconstructed” arrangements, as in flowers and greenery in separate vessels, were comprised of quince branches, acacia leaves, white and purple iris flowers and bamboo.

The first course consisted of American Osetra Caviar, farm-raised in Illinois estuaries, Fingerling Potato Veloute, consisting of twelve varieties of potatoes from farms in New York, Idaho, and California, and Quail Eggs from Pennsylvania. The second course was a Winter Garden Salad with petite mixed radish, baby carrots, and merlot lettuce, all of which were reportedly grown in a hot house. Individual salads were served in large glass bowls made to resemble terrariums.

The main course consisted of dry-aged, rib-eye steaks, raised on a family-owned farm in Greeley, Colorado. Each one weighed approximately six ounces. The steaks were accompanied by Jasper Hill Farm Bleu Cheese from Vermont, charred shallots, oyster mushrooms and braised chard. The dessert course consisted of Hawaiian chocolate-malted ganache (layer cake), vanilla ice cream, and tangerines from Florida. An after dinner treat included fudge made from Vermont maple syrup, lavender shortbread cookies, and cotton candy dusted with orange zest.

Three wines were also served during dinner. They included a Morlet “La Proportion Doree” 2011, from Napa Valley, CA, a Chester-Kidder Red Blend 2009 from Columbia Valley, WA, and a Thibaut-Jannison “Blanc de Chardonnay” from Monticello, VA. Also included were a combination of sugar roses and fleur-de-lis, the official flowers of the U.S. and France respectively. “We made 38 of each–that’s more than 1,800 petals,” revealed Pastry Chef Bill Yosses.

The guests were entertained by R&B singer Mary J. Blige, and it was reported that First Lady Michelle Obama’s black and liberty blue Carolina Herrera gown cost approximately $12,000. The cost of the dinner remains unknown, but state dinners in Obama’s first term ranged from approximately $203,000 spent on a State dinner for President Lee Myung-bak of South Korea, to around $570,000 spent on a State dinner for Prime Minister Manmohan Singh of India. This latest one is thought to be on the expensive side of the spectrum. The taxpayers will pick up the tab.

It took 13 months for the State Department to release information regarding the cost of five previous state dinners hosted by the Obamas, which ran to a total of more than $1.9 million. A sixth dinner was held for British Prime Minister David Cameron on March 14, 2012, but the State Department has refused to respond to a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) filed seven months ago regarding the costs.

One suspects most Americans understand the requirements of the presidency demand adherence to a certain set of protocols. Moreover, Obama is not the only president who has held state dinners at the White House. Yet for a man seemingly obsessed with income inequality, the level of excess that attends not only this dinner, but the numerous private parties and lavish vacations he and his family have taken — including those involving dog airlifts and separate jet travel to the same destination, simply for convenience sake — reeks of hypocrisy.

The Morning Call, a Lehigh Valley newspaper, published an article in August of 2013, regarding the Obamas’ vacation bills that best summed up the level of that hypocrisy: “President Obama is the most expensive president in U.S. history,” the paper stated.

In the meantime, the taxpayers underwriting the Obamas’ lavish lifestyle have seen their household incomes decline by 4.4 percent since the recovery began in 2009.
While the elitists dine on aged beef, a record-setting one-in-five American households use food stamps to pay for their food. Those same elitists, who inhabit Silicon Valley and the Chamber of Commerce clamor for comprehensive immigration reform that would pit millions of low-skill, low-wage American job-seekers against newly-amnestied illegals, lowering wage levels in the process, according to the CBO. Obama and the rest of his inner circle applaud the actions of the Federal Reserve, whose newest chairwoman, Janet Yellen, has promised to remain accommodative to Wall Street (while Main Street America remains saddled with pitiful interest rates on their savings) and to remain committed to an ongoing Quantitative Easing policy that fuels market speculation, even as it debases our currency.

While the president and his party bemoan income inequality and joblessness, four of the five richest counties in the nation are suburbs of Washington, D.C. A supine Republican Party is praised by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) for approving a clean raise of the debt ceiling, allowing the nation’s unconscionable borrowing habits to continue. That those unconscionable borrowing habits will either bankrupt the nation, or lead to a vastly lower standard of living for future generations of Americans is dismissed as exaggerated nonsense that only animates “radicals” like the Tea Party faction of the GOP.

All while the president and his friends party hearty. Ordinary Americans can likely imagine the conversation at such parties occasionally addressing the latest theories regarding social justice for the benighted masses — in between sips of Chardonnay or bites of oyster mushrooms. No doubt the atmosphere is thick with the aroma of self-aggrandizement that surrounds people who earnestly believe the historical wreckage attached to every attempt to achieve a socialist utopia was due to the fact that the wrong people were in charge.

Now the “right” people are in charge, and more than eager to realize their vision by any means necessary — while they enjoy the opulence to which they feel entitled for their efforts on our behalf. That’s what radical egalitarianism is really all about.

Unlikely allies band together in light of Obama's possible surrender to Iran.

Israel and Saudi Arabia are proving the old adage correct that “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” The Iranian regime is their common enemy. Israel sees a nuclear armed Iran as an existential threat. Sunni Saudi Arabia worries that Shiite Iran with nuclear arms will be emboldened to threaten other Sunni Gulf governments and ultimately try to force its will on Saudi Arabia itself.

Thus, the Jewish state of Israel and the Islamic state of Saudi Arabia, certainly not friends in normal times, find themselves planning to join forces if necessary to stop Iran from crossing the nuclear arms finish line. According to a November 17, 2013 article in the British newspaper Sunday Times, Saudi Arabia has agreed to “give the go-ahead for Israeli planes to use its airspace in the event of an attack on Iran.” The Saudis are also reported to be willing to assist the Israelis by making drones, rescue helicopters, and tanker planes available for the Israelis’ use.

“Once the Geneva agreement is signed, the military option will be back on the table. The Saudis are furious and are willing to give Israel all the help it needs,” an unnamed diplomatic source told the Sunday Times.

Israel and Saudi Arabia have good reason not to trust the United States to negotiate an acceptable deal that would dismantle Iran’s nuclear uranium enrichment and plutonium facilities in a fully verifiable manner. They have been pushed aside as the Obama administration plunges forward to reach an accommodation with Iran. Rather than take seriously the concerns of the countries in the region who would be most directly affected by a rash settlement on terms favorable to Iran, President Obama and his Secretary of State John Kerry are wearing blinders. They downplay how close Iran is to achieving its long-held ambition of becoming a nuclear-armed power and the danger that a bad deal will only serve to give Iran diplomatic cover while it moves ahead.

Israeli intelligence has concluded that the Obama Administration’s previous interim offer to Iran would only set back the Iranian nuclear program about 24 days. What was Secretary of State John Kerry’s response when he was asked about this assessment during his briefing of senators last week, as he tried to dissuade them from passing legislation to impose more sanctions on Iran? Kerry repeatedly told senators, Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) remarked to reporters after the meeting, to “disbelieve everything that the Israelis had just told [us].” A Senate aide familiar with the meeting was quoted by BuzzFeed’s Rosie Gray that “every time anybody would say anything about ‘what would the Israelis say,’ they’d get cut off and Kerry would say, ‘You have to ignore what they’re telling you, stop listening to the Israelis on this.’”

Whom do the president and secretary of state listen to and put in charge of negotiating a nuclear deal with Iran? None other than the same person involved in the botched negotiations with North Korea more than a decade ago, Wendy Sherman, the State Department’s Under Secretary for Political Affairs. Sherman fell for North Korea’s deceptions, admitting in congressional testimony in 1999 that she and others in the Clinton administration were “working hard” on “sanctions easing” for North Korea that would “allow for financial transactions, both bank and individual” and “the export and trade of consumer goods.”

A few years later, reflecting on her impressions of the former North Korean dictator Kim Jong-il, whom she had met on her visit to North Korea, Wendy Sherman said he was “smart” and “capable.” She thought he “was very polite,” a “hands-on leader” and “not some hysterical crazy person.” She admitted that at times he was brutal, but also compared him to “a big-city mayor who goes to see whether the garbage is being collected.”

Senator Kirk reminded reporters after the briefing with Kerry in which Wendy Sherman participated that “her record on North Korea is a total failure and an embarrassment to her service.” But the Obama administration rewarded her service as an appeaser of North Korea by empowering her to bring her Neville Chamberlain show on the road to Geneva to lead the U.S. delegation in negotiations with Iran. In fact, Sherman thought the draft interim deal she was negotiating with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif more than a week ago was so good that she and European Union foreign executive Catherine Ashton urged the foreign ministers of the six powers involved in the talks to come to Geneva for a signing ceremony. “The cake is ready for putting in the oven to bake,” she and Ashton are reported to have boasted. Fortunately, the French pulled the cake out of the oven before it had a chance to settle.

Indeed, France is now trying to decide whether to join the Israeli-Saudi opposition to the Obama administration’s half-baked efforts at détente with Iran.

French President Francois Hollande and Foreign Minister Laurent, who branded the deal originally offered to Iran a “sucker’s deal,” are in Israel this week to discuss possible alternative options in dealing with Iran. This follows a number of meetings between French and Saudi Arabian officials, including a visit by French Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian to Saudi Arabia to discuss a new defense contract.

Debkafile ran a headline on November 16th: “Hollande and Netanyahu to consider forming a joint French-Israeli-Arab front against Iran.” The article reported on the option being offered to France of “aligning with the Middle East powers – Israel, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Egypt – which challenge President Barack Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry’s race for détente with Tehran.” If Hollande accepts the option, Debkafile explained, “the next decision facing President Hollande will be whether, how and when this grouping is willing to consider resorting to military action to preempt a nuclear-armed Iran.”

So far, France still gives no indication that it will meekly follow the Obama administration’s lead, no matter what the terms of the deal. During a joint news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hollande listed four demands which he said must be in place for any interim deal with Iran to work:

“The first demand: put all the Iranian nuclear installations under international supervision, right now. Second point: suspend enrichment to 20 percent. Thirdly: to reduce the existing stock. And finally, to halt construction of the Arak (heavy water) plant. These are the points which for us are essential to guarantee any agreement.”

“Surrender” Sherman and her merry band of negotiators are most likely not listening. They are hopeful for a compromise in the next round of talks scheduled to begin this week in Geneva, which no doubt the Obama administration would spin as a success. Only this time the final judgment on whether the deal is good or not may not rest with the Obama administration alone. Israel, Saudi Arabia and France may render their own verdict and act accordingly.

The decision by France’s richest man, Bernard Arnault, to seek Belgian citizenship has created a media frenzy over tax exiles, giving the increasingly unpopular Socialist President Francois Hollande a chance to grandstand.

It’s mildly impressive that Hollande has managed to become unpopular shortly after being elected. Arnault has been a critic of Hollande’s supertax scheme and is voting with his feet.

Arnault, the chief executive officer of LVMH Moet Hennessy Louis Vuitton SA (MC), the world’s biggest luxury-goods company, said his “personal action” is not aimed at sending a political message or escaping Hollande’s 75 percent tax on earnings of more than 1 million euros ($1.28 million). Still, the Liberation newspaper yesterday ran a front-page headline that said “Get lost, rich bastard,” and Hollande in a televised interview on Sept. 9 said it’s patriotic to pay taxes.

And it’s even more patriotic to pander to Muslims in your campaign and bleeding productive French citizens to fund the polygamous lifestyles of the Islamist ghettos.

“He should have reflected on what it means to ask for another nationality because we are proud to be French,” Hollande said in the 30-minute interview.

Clearly. Like the members of Hollande’s cabinet who hold dual citizenship in Muslim countries. Nothing says French pride like not even bothering to commit to France.

Arnault helped extend the debate further yesterday by announcing that he’s suing Liberation for its “vulgarity” and “violence” and noting the jobs he’s created in France since the 1980s, when he took control of LVMH.

But I’m sure all the taxes he won’t be paying will help Hollande create even more jobs. Patriotic gang rape jobs in the Banlieues.

Opposition politicians said Arnault’s case may just be the beginning of a brain-drain and departure of wealth from the country.

“Behind the Bernard Arnault affair there is a mountain of departures,” former Prime Minister Francois Fillon said yesterday on Europe 1 radio, adding “Who is more patriotic, someone who has created thousands of jobs and pays” millions of euros in tax or “the editorial writers?”

The editorial writers… obviously.

Besides who needs Louis Vuitton, Hennessy and Moet anyway. It’s not like those products make money. Belgium can have the jobs and France can have social workers teaching Muslims not to murder their sisters unless they really have to.

The president needs to rethink his approach. He may have something to learn about growth and job creation from Arnault, who over the past 25 years has built his luxury-goods company into one of France’s largest and most profitable enterprises. It now accounts for more than 5 percent of the Paris stock market and employs close to 100,000 people in France and around the world. It shouldn’t be held against him that along the way he has acquired a net worth of $25.7 billion, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index, making him the 15th-richest person on the planet.

France will lose billions and gain…. millions.

Hollande has recognized that the 75 percent rate on earnings of more than 1 million euros is largely symbolic: It will affect only 2,000 to 3,000 people and won’t raise much revenue. That lends credence to accusations by Arnault and others that the levy is designed to pump up the president’s falling approval ratings by stoking class resentment.

But the left isn’t really interested in wealth, so much as in destroying it. Driving out the 75 percenters accomplishes the goal of purging France of some of its upper class dissenters. Hollande wanted Arnault to leave and got his wish.

“Mr Arnault came to see me at the end of last year, wanting to be domiciled here, to live here,” Mayor Armand de Decker told the newspaper La Libre Belgique. “He has a feeling about the policies of his country, which he considers unfriendly to business.”

Was Arnault paving the way to Monte Carlo, the French press wondered. The route to Monaco via Belgium is a well-trodden one: once he had dual nationality, the businessman could theoretically renounce his French citizenship and move to the Riviera principality where Belgian nationals – but not French citizens – can live tax-free.

Au Revoir.

Beleaguered country on its way out of the euro-zone?

Voters across Europe have spoken in the last week and the message they have sent has upended the fragile consensus that budget cuts and fiscal discipline would bring the continent back from the brink of debt Armageddon.

In national elections in Greece and France, as well as local elections in Germany and Italy, voters turned out governments that backed so-called “austerity” programs that would have brought a measure of sanity back to budgeting and debt management, while electing socialist politicians who promised that economic problems could be solved by implementing “growth” policies — policies that include massive new spending, tax increases on the “rich,” and a rollback of budget cuts.

Greece appears to be a nation in full denial, rejecting the coalition that negotiated a bailout package worth 180 billion euros that would have kept the nation in the euro zone, and embracing a radical socialist party that wants to scuttle the deal. French voters had other problems with former President Nicholas Sarkozy, but it was primarily his tepid attempts to reform labor laws and the education system that led to his downfall in the May 6 election.

President-elect Francois Hollande has promised to restore what Sarkozy cut, while making it clear that he wants to “renegotiate” the carefully crafted “fiscal compact” that sets budget and deficit guidelines for the entire euro zone. The compact was the work of German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Sarkozy — “Merkozy” as the duo was referred to in the European press. The defeat of Sarkozy calls into question the France-Germany relationship, which is largely responsible for keeping the EU from disintegrating in these last two years of crisis, as the leaders of the two largest economies in Europe successfully navigated the panics that almost tore the euro zone apart.

In Spain, where one in four workers are unemployed, the government has come under massive pressure from the left to change course from the painful medicine of cutting services and firing government employees and embrace massive increases in spending. Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy is determined to stick with his budget cutting and deficit reduction. Madrid announced this weekend that it may take over the finances of an entire region because the local government may not be able to meet his deficit targets. He has also vowed to clean up Spain’s tottering banking sector, taking over Bankia, the country’s largest mortgage lender, just this week.

But for all of Rajoy’s cutting, it is likely he will not meet his deficit target for the year. Instead of a projected deficit of 5.3% of GDP, Spain is likely to see a 6.4% shortfall. This is down from 8.3% last year, but is not likely to appease investors in Spanish debt who will demand a premium that may lead to even more financing problems for the country. Ten year notes ballooned to over 6% this past week — an unsustainable level that would set off a ruinous debt spiral of increased deficits due to costlier debt servicing, which would panic investors even more, leading to higher interest rates on bonds to finance the debt.

Spain’s economy is expected to contract almost 2% this year, with anemic growth projected for 2013. With budget cuts just beginning to bite and no growth in sight to bring the unemployment rate down significantly, the future is not bright for Rajoy’s efforts. Hundreds of thousands took to the streets on Saturday in Spain’s major cities to protest against Rajoy’s efforts to bring Spain’s fiscal crisis under control. It is doubtful, given what we’ve seen across Europe this past week, whether he can hold together the consensus to continue his austerity program.

Spain may flirt with disaster in the coming months, but the spotlight this past week was on France, and especially Greece, where national elections have unleashed the socialist left and promise to bring the euro zone back into a full fledged crisis sooner rather than later.

The election of Francois Hollande in France — the first socialist to win the presidency since Mitterand 16 years ago — has had the immediate effect of breaking the alliance between Merkel and Sarkozy that proved to be the linchpin that held the EU together during the worst of the sovereign debt crisis. Their partnership produced several measures that will allow the European Central Bank more leeway in dealing with future crisis while their collaboration on the EU fiscal compact has tied the economies of the EU together in a way never before attempted.
