A reflection on what Allah say in the Koran about Jews and Christians.

A commonly heard claim is that Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in “the same God.” These are comforting words and of great assistance to those wishing to engage in interfaith dialogues and tri-faith ventures. But is this true? To answer that question, let’s look at what is said and taught about Jews and Christians by Allah, the god of Islam, and Muhammad, Allah’s prophet. We’ll start with the Koran.

The Koran

Muslims believe the Koran is the infallible, timeless and perfect word of Allah. So what does Allah say in the Koran about Jews and Christians?

To set the stage, Allah states that the only religion acceptable to him is Islam (e.g., 3:19 and 3:85). And Allah states that Islam is to be made superior over all other religions, even if the non-Muslims don’t like it (e.g., 9:33, 48:28, and 61:9).

Allah states that he is angry with the Jews, and the Christians are misguided in their beliefs (1:7). In fact, Allah curses the Jews and Christians (9:30). He states that the Jews and Christians are among the worst of creatures who “will abide in the fire of Hell” (98:6), while Muslims are the best of creatures (3:110 and 98:7). He forbids Muslims from being friends with Jews and Christians (5:51). Instead, Allah commands Muslims to fight the Jews and Christians until those Jews and Christians pay the jizyah (protection tax), with willing submission and feeling themselves subdued (9:29).

Allah specifically states that the Jews are among the worst enemies of Islam (5:82).

Allah states that Christianity is a false religion. Allah says that Jesus was not crucified, but it only appeared so (4:157-158). Allah states that he took Jesus bodily into paradise and made one of Jesus’ disciples look like Jesus; it was that disciple who was crucified. So Muslims who know their religion look at a crucifix or a painting of the Crucifixion and see an imposter hanging on the cross. And of course, if there was no Crucifixion, there was no Resurrection. So Islam teaches that Christianity is based on a fraud.

Allah also states that those who believe that Jesus is the Son of God commit the one unforgiveable sin in Islam, Shirk (e.g., 4:48 and 4:116). In fact, Allah curses Christians specifically for this belief (9:30) and says that those who so believe will go to Hell (e.g., 3:151 and 5:72-73).

Muhammad

Islam teaches that Muhammad spoke for Allah (4:80), and Allah commands Muslims to obey Muhammad (59:7). And Muhammad is considered the timeless standard by which Muslims should conduct themselves (33:21). So what did Muhammad have to say?

He said Jews and Christians are worth only half as much as a Muslim,[1]and he gave the following advice about what to do when meeting Jews and Christians:

Do not greet the Jews and the Christians before they greet you and when you meet any one of them on the roads force him to go to the narrowest part of it.[2]

Muhammad said that the Jews were grave robbers,[3] and he said,

The Hour will not be established until you fight against the Jews, and the stone behind which a Jew will be hiding will say, ‘O Muslim! There is a Jew hiding behind me, so kill him.[4]

Muhammad said that on the Day of Resurrection, mountains of sins would be removed from the backs of Muslims and put onto the Jews and Christians.[5] Muhammad even said that Jews and Christians would take the place of Muslims in Hell.[6]

And on his death bed Muhammad said:

I will expel the Jews and Christians from the Arabian Peninsula and will not leave any but Muslims.[7]

These are timeless commands and statements from Allah and Muhammad, and Muslims are not allowed to disagree with them (33:36).

So if Allah is God and the Koran consists of statements and commands from Allah, if Muhammad spoke for Allah, and if Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in that same God, then Jews and Christians believe in and worship a God who hates and curses them, orders Muslims to fight them, and condemns them to Hell simply because they are not Muslims.

Either we are talking about a pagan god of multiple, compartmentalized personalities, or the claim that Jews, Christians and Muslims all believe in the same God is theological nonsense.

Al Aqsa Mosque-goers, including children, break out in spontaneous prayer to slaughter Jews.

A shockingly, disturbing video has recently surfaced exposing the true and pernicious face of Palestinian extremism and xenophobia. The video, made available by Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) shows a bearded sheikh giving what appears to be an impromptu sermon on the Jews. (After all, what else is there to talk about?) The venue is the Al-Aqsa Mosque, considered by those who practice the “religion of peace” to be their third holiest site after Mecca and Medina.

The speech itself is filled with gut-wrenching anti-Semitism, the kind that would even make the editors of the New York Times blush. The sheikh describes how the Jews possess the vilest of traits, how they were responsible for killing the “prophets,” how they attempted to assassinate Muhammad, how their time for “slaughter is near,” how they will be slaughtered “without mercy,” and of course there’s the perfunctory, “Jews are apes and pigs” thing.

Interestingly, the speaker doesn’t mention the longing for Palestinian statehood or independence. Instead, he talks of the establishment of the “Islamic Caliphate.” “Oh Allah’” he states, “Hasten the establishment of the State of the Islamic Caliphate,” and further rants, “Oh Allah hasten the pledge of allegiance to the Muslim Caliph.” He spews forth the latter statement three times to chants of “Amen!” from the large, approving crowd congregating around him.

These comments, which would register horror and revulsion in the West (at least in some quarters) are almost banal among Palestinians. In fact, a similar video featuring a different speaker some days earlier at the same venue, conveyed identical sentiment, expressing admiration for the Islamic State and calling for murder of Jews and annihilation of America.

Guttural anti-Semitism is ingrained and interwoven in the fabric of Palestinian society. Despite their minuscule numbers, 78% of Palestinians believe that Jews are responsible for most of the world’s wars while a whopping 88% believe that Jews control the global media and still more believe that Jews wield too much power in the business world.

Much of the blame for this can be placed squarely on the doorstep of Mahmoud Abbas’s Palestinian Authority, which subjects the Palestinian population to a steady diet of hate-filled, Judeophobic rhetoric through state-controlled media and educational institutions. It is so well entrenched that the process of deprogramming, if it were ever attempted, would take generations to reverse.

Some of the blame however, rests with the Obama administration and the European Union, which continues to fund the Palestinian Authority with an endless supply of taxpayer money without demanding any form of accountability. Western money is openly used to fund the Palestinian Authority’s hate apparatus with money flowing into institutions that propagate anti-Semitism and encourage terrorism.

Some Western media outlets are also culpable in perpetuating the Palestinian culture of hate. The New York Times for example has frequently and diligently covered so-called “price tag” vandalism attacks; a practice universally condemned by nearly all Israelis and vigorously prosecuted by Israeli authorities but rarely, if ever, covers the type of venomous hate speech witnessed in the above-noted videos.

Hate crimes inspired by this type of pernicious speech are also routinely ignored. Highlighting this point is the disturbing case of Asher Palmer, an American citizen who, along with his infant son was murdered when a rock thrown by a Palestinian crashed through the windshield of the car he was driving, hitting him flush in the face. The New York Times ignored the gruesome murders and only mentioned the incident in passing a few days later in the context of a reprisal “price tag” attack against a mosque. Under the unbelievably skewed editorial policies of the New York Times, it took an act of vandalism, ostensibly committed by Jews, to highlight the horrific murder of Asher Palmer and his infant son at the hands of Arabs.

The practice of ignoring such malevolence partly stems from the fact that the New York Times wishes to present a certain narrative at the expense of the facts and partly stems from a systematic inability of some Western media outlets to hold Arabs to a Western standard of decency and morality. Thus, Arab anti-Semitism, the same kind of anti-Semitism practiced in Europe some 75 years ago, is either ignored or attributed to mere cultural differences.

Indeed, the New York Times no longer even bothers to hide the fact that it engages in duplicitous double standards when it comes to reporting Palestinian-Arab racism and hate speech as evidenced from a telling exchange between New York Times’ opinion page staff editor, Matt Seaton and Tamar Sternthal, a director at the Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting in America (CAMERA).

Rarely is the sort of vitriol witnessed in the videos expressed in English to Western audiences. Only the crassest among them publicly share their feelings about Jews, and the West for that matter. But behind closed doors it’s an entirely different story. Groups like MEMRI, CAMERA, Palestinian Media Watch (PMW) and many others do an excellent job in exposing the malevolence hiding just beneath the surface. The problem is no one seems to care. No one cared 75 years ago either.

Avner wrote:

Some brave hearts defied the ban. Each year, as the Yom Kippur service ended – Ne’ila – a member of Betar, the youth movement of Ze’ev Jabotinsky and Menachem Begin’s Irgun underground, would surreptitiously sound the shofar, and the police would move in and hit out in every direction. Menachem Begin was witness to one such Ne’ila on the Yom Kippur of 1943.

What he saw was a battalion of British policemen, armed with rifles and batons who, in starched, ironed uniforms, brassy parade-ground belts, navy-blue peaked caps and polished boots, looked invincible. With the cool confidence of jailers taking the measure of a prison yard’s inmates, they scanned the worshipers cramming the Western Wall’s narrow alleyway, trying to pick out who might turn out to be the blower. And when the sun went down and the shadows lengthened they squeezed in among the pious, elbowing their way towards the Wall, weapons angled and primed.

And then they heard it, and it drove them into a frenzy. A ruddy-faced sergeant, livid at the insolence, dashed toward a short figure clutching a shofar to his lips and, slapping the lad hard across the face, bellowed, “‘Ere, stop blowing that thing.” Other policemen set upon worshipers trying to defend him, clobbering them with their batons.”

Choked dumb with emotion, Menachem Begin was later to write: “Our ancient stones are not silent. They speak of the House that once stood here, of kings who once knelt here in prayer, of prophets and seers who declaimed their message here, of heroes who fell here, dying; and of how the great flame, at once destructive and illuminating, was kindled here. This House and this land, with its prophets and kings and fighters, were ours long before the British were ever a nation.”

Begin vowed that Jews would have the right to pray freely in Jerusalem.

As Avner continues,

Came the Ne’ila climax of Yom Kippur and in the ever-deepening twilight the white-clad cantor, facing the gigantic shadowy blocks of the antique Wall’s weathered stones, chanted in a voice that swelled and soared, “Sh’ma Yisrael… Hear, O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.” and the whole congregation affirmed this declaration with single-minded intensity.

As the shofar sounded then, the Jews rejoiced. Today, at the Temple Mount the Jewish right to prayer is restricted. Many years ago, Menachem Begin fought for the right of Jews to pray at the Western Wall – and today too Jews must fight for the right of freedom of prayer.

The Temple Mount is the historical location of the First and Second Temples, the holiest place in the world for Jews – and Jews must be allowed to pray there.

As one holds a copy of Dr. Phyllis Chesler’s updated book “The New Anti-Semitism” in their hands, we can all breathe a collective sigh and exclaim “this tome hasn’t come a minute too soon.” Thanks to the excellent research and prophetic analysis conducted by this acclaimed author, lecturer and activist, the reader is afforded the necessary context and perspective with which to understand the invidious phenomenon of contemporary Jew hatred.

Written over a decade ago in a compelling, easy to read and free flowing style, Dr. Chesler’s premise was and still is that classical anti-Semitism as espoused by such nihilists and evil madmen as Hitler and the scores that preceded him has now been deemed to be “politically correct” by the trendy denizens of the Western academy and the “intellectual” crowds. Chesler was among the first to have seen and denounced the suicidal alliance between the Western intelligentsia and fundamental Islam. The anti-Semite needed a new and more acceptable veneer and the little place on the globe known as Israel would serve as the perfect subterfuge. Thus, Zionism does not equal racism but anti-Zionism does. In fact, it is part of what makes the new anti-Semitism “new.”

There is no doubt that the al Aqsa intifada and the traumatic events of 9/11 served as an impetus for Dr. Chesler to pen this book as she naturally drew a correlation between the kind of terrorism that had become endemic to the state of Israel and the Jihadic terrorism that was let loose upon the world. “War and a new kind of anti-Semitism had been declared,” she writes.

In the decades prior to the 9/11 and the advent of al Qaeda, Chesler is acutely aware of the festering anti-Semitism that appears to be increasingly more ubiquitous with each passing moment. She details major events that she personally encountered during her years as part of the vanguard of the second wave feminist movement and the reader can easily connect the proverbial dots to see and feel the palpable resentment of those who championed the politically correct cause against Israel, now known as liberalism.

Always sensing a strong undercurrent of such bigotry in the various human rights movements that came to define her raison d’etre, Chesler is most disheartened when women’s conferences and forums such as Copenhagen and a pre-Durban one were hijacked by Jew hating agendas. She justifiably laments the fact that some important conferences are cancelled because of anti-Semitic and anti-Israel bias. “Women, you see, cannot be accused of racism – unless, of course, they are Jewish women,” she sardonically writes.

Because she is keenly aware that anti-Semitism may start with the Jews but never ends with the Jews, she makes the logical connection between the opprobrium that is harbored for both America and Israel by those who assign blame to all forms of human oppression in terms of colonialism, capitalism, and imperialism. “The Palestinian uprising has increasingly been seen as the uprising of all oppressed peoples against their colonial oppressors, that is, Jews, Zionists and Americans,” she ruefully observes. And, she notes, few understand that Muslim history is one of imperialism, colonialism, conversion by the sword, gender and religious apartheid, and slavery. Only the post enlightenment Judeo-Christian West are seen as mighty sinners.

Unlike other authors who have offered works of this genre, Chesler’s meticulous research is beyond impeccable as she explores the genesis of post 9/11 Islamic terrorism specifically directed against the West and their global interests. Israel, of course is viewed as the little Satan by the retinue of pro-Palestinian apologists and their Western lackeys and Chesler takes the Big Lies and bold propaganda to task by exposing their motives. Case in point: The unfortunate Muhammed Dura incident and the use of “fauxtography” are given more than an ample dose of good old fashioned sunlight as she reveals one of the most egregious anti-Israel hoaxes ever sold to the public; however deceptively.

While reading this book, one is in retrospective mode as we imbibe a seemingly endless litany of horrifying anti-Israel and anti-Jewish events at university campuses that took place in the first decade of the new century and compare them to how much worse they are today. It should come as no surprise that the BDS movement and physical and verbal violence against pro-Israel Jewish students has gained a dangerous degree of momentum, power and economic viability in institutions of higher learning.

Chesler cites the palpable but surreal bellicosity that has become an endemic part of campus life for Jews who wish to express pro-Israel sentiments. Physical attacks, heckling of speakers, academic boycotts, incendiary street theater predicated on distortions, the lies being promulgated at the annual Jew roasting, better known as Israel apartheid week and the infinite amount of Orwellian rhetoric being circulated in every facet of academic life to just name a few. “The New McCarthyism on campus consists of the anti-Israeli and pro-Palestinian point of view. No other view will be tolerated,” she writes.

Chesler is under no illusions and does not even attempt to sugarcoat the obvious. European anti-Semitism is at pre-World War II levels and the flames of destruction are being consistently fanned not only by the “usual suspects” but by the formidable fourth estate. The European press she writes “have continuously held Israel accountable for Palestinian terrorism, and justified human homicide bombing as a function of Palestinian “despair.”

This book is easy to read yet it is filled with a voluminous amount of facts and is definitely driven by concrete and verifiable data. What causes the words to leap off the pages, however, and to embed themselves in our collective psyches are the nuanced and urbane analyses proffered both by Chesler and by an extensive array of experts. Frightening as it may be, they provide us with the kind of perspective we need to tackle anti-Semitic diatribes.

Yes, Dr. Chesler cautions us to grant this matter the gravitas it deserves and not to dismiss it as mere blather. In the expanded last chapters of the book she prodigiously confronts the Big Lies and blood libels as she challenges the sheer mendacity of pseudo and rather lethal Palestinian narratives in ways that are both comprehensible and thought provoking. On an uplifting note she provides us with ways in which each of us can support Israel and Judaism, either through economic empowerment against boycotts of Israeli made products and development of community and college based pro-Israel programs connecting with individual Israelis as part of our families.

In one of her final exhortations, Dr. Chesler has stumbled upon what may be the most important component in staying afloat as a people as we navigate the turbulent tide of anti-Semitism. She writes: “Dare I say it? I must. I implore Jews to stop fighting with each other. Even if we disagree, we must try to do so respectfully, soulfully….We are an eternal people engaged in an eternal struggle with evil.”

Definitely words to heed.

The Jewish people have a right to pray on the Temple Mount.

Jewish presence in the land of Israel goes back more than 3,000 years. Jews prayed for millennia, while separated from the land, to be able to return. Once they did return, the people sacrificed in order to build and protect the land.

And now, the Jew who is passionate about Jewish rights and Jewish attachment to the land is viewed as a “radical right winger,” a troublemaker.

The world at large certainly sees matters this way: If only nationalist Jews would relent already, then Israel could reach an agreement with the Palestinian Arabs and there could be peace. But the fanatic and troublesome right-wingers keep getting in the way.

The reason that Jews who seek Jewish rights are seen as troublemakers is because the Arabs tend to negotiate by way of violence and threats.

A tendency towards violence is inherent in the Arab Muslim culture. We are not looking at a modern phenomenon, but at a situation that has persisted for centuries. We see it in the way children are treated in this society, and the fact that it is considered permissible if not necessary sometimes to kill women for the sake of family honor. It is well known among those who deal with these issues that terrorists who kill Jews then mutilate their bodies. Relief and satisfaction derive from gruesome expressions of violence?

The true roots of deep Muslim Arab anger, expressed via overt violence, are not “the occupation” or the lack of a Palestinian state. Social scientists find it in such things as sexual abuse of young boys (also common in the culture); this perpetuates violence as the boys grow up angry.

But now the situation is being exacerbated by Palestinian Arab leaders, so-called, who use this tendency towards violence for political gain, inciting their people rather than seeking to reduce tensions in the street. They are manipulating the crowds. For the Muslim Arab culture that is so prone to violence is also an honor/shame culture. The perception that they have been “dissed,” treated with disrespect, foments anger and then violence. And the messages being delivered by the likes of Mahmoud Abbas to the Palestinian Arabs is precisely this: that they are being treated with disrespect by Israel.

This culture is not big on compromise, either. To compromise is to forgo part of what you are entitled to, and this diminishes your honor.

What happens then is that the Jew who seeks his or her rights is seen as “causing” Arab riots and attacks. How much more peaceful it would be, if only these Jews would stop insisting on things that irritate the Palestinian Arabs. Sounds crazy/unreasonable/simplistic, but that indeed is what is happening. Palestinian Arabs, who are collectively bullies, are being broadly embraced anyway. Either their violence is perceived as justified, or it is simply deemed wise to give them what they want to keep them quiet.

It is particularly important to deal with this issue now because Rabbi Yehuda Glick, who speaks for Jewish rights on the Temple Mount, endured an attack on his life in Jerusalem last Wednesday and faces a long struggle for recovery. Since he was shot, he has been referred to again and again in the media as “far right,” “radical” and more. No one says, “Well, he deserved it.” But implicit is the notion that if only he, and others like him, were less passionate about the Temple Mount there would be less Palestinian Arab anger. People like Rav Yehuda are seen as stirring the unrest.

But this has precious little to do with who Yehuda Glick really is:

Invariably, his friends and family say he is a gentle, non-confrontational soul, who would be delighted for good relations with Muslims.

He calls the Temple the House of Prayer for All Nations. This concept is built into Jewish tradition: In the days to come, all monotheistic religions are to have a share in the Temple to be built on the Mount one day. Isaiah 56:7 – “…for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all peoples.”

While he doesn’t back down from Jewish rights he readily explains this vision, describing the possibility that the Muslim Dome of the Rock could be retained as part of the Temple, if the Muslims would be peaceful and share in an effort to cooperate.

And he has been filmed joining in a prayer session with Arabs at the Mount.

Some radical extremist!

When Israel liberated the Old City and the Temple Mount in 1967, Defense Minister Moshe Dayan made a very foolish – a very bad – decision. He turned to the Muslims in charge on the Mount – the Wakf or Muslim Trust – and told them that they would continue to manage day to day affairs there.

The worst of what he did was to rule that there would be no Jewish praying on the Mount, so as to not upset the status quo there.

It is not at all certain that Dayan’s motivation in doing this was proper, and it is clear that, as he was not a religious Jew himself, he saw the Mount more as a site of historical interest than one of on-going religious concern. But we can give him the benefit of the doubt in this respect: he probably didn’t understand Muslim Arab mentality or how matters would evolve.

Over the years Jews have petitioned for the right to pray on the Mount. This issue was last brought before the High Court in 2006, at which point it was said that only if “there is concrete information about actual danger to life” should Jewish praying be forbidden. But ultimately, the matter was left in the hands of the police, who prefer preventing Jewish prayer so that it is not necessary to send in reinforcements to contend with Arab rioting.

But how outrageous that in the Jewish state, where the rights of all religious groups are protected, it should be impossible for Jews to pray in the place that is holiest to Jews.

Over the last few years, there has been movement by Muslim groups to libel Israel, in order to arouse the people: The totally fallacious claim that Jews are about to destroy the Al Aksa Mosque on the Mount has been put out regularly.

But now it has gotten much worse: there is a battle cry that the Mount is totally the heritage of the Muslims and that Jews have no business setting foot on it. Declared Abbas just days ago:

“It is our sacred place, al-Aksa [mosque] is ours, this Noble Sanctuary [as Muslims refer to the Temple Mount] is ours. They have no right to go there and desecrate it.”

Abbas put out calls to “protect” the Mount from Jews. And then, when it was closed to everyone for a day, after the attempted assassination of Yehuda Glick, he called for a “day of rage,” because Muslims may never be prevented from entering the Mount for any reason. This unleashed additional violence – with the throwing of pipe-bombs at police and much more in eastern Jerusalem Arab neighborhoods on Friday night and Saturday.

Palestinian Media Watch has reported that last week, before the conference on the Temple Mount, at which Yehuda Glick spoke:

“[F]ormer PA Prime Minister and PLO Executive Committee member Ahmed Qurei (Abu Alaa) issued a press release in which he condemned ‘the danger’ of the conference organized by Glick and warned of ‘extremist biblical plans encouraging settlers and extremist Jews to carry out large-scale invasions of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and calling on the entire Jewish nation to invade the Mosque.’ He also stated that Jerusalem and the Al-Aqsa Mosque are ‘undergoing one of the most dangerous periods since the beginning of the Israeli occupation’ and that it necessitates ‘immediate intervention.’”

At the same time, there has been a growing sense of outrage among religious Jews that prayer on the Mount is not permitted. Members of the Jewish Home party have been advancing legislation that would allocate different periods of time and different areas for Jewish and Muslim prayer on the Mount. This proposal, which is altogether fair and equitable, is modeled after the pattern of shared praying time for the Machpela [Cave of the Patriarchs] in Hebron.

It will not succeed at this point, however, because Prime Minister Netanyahu will block it. His rallying cry has been one of calling for “restraint” and maintaining “the status quo” on the Temple Mount.

To Israelis, he is saying that he will not permit the advancement of legislation for praying on the Mount, and to Arabs, that he will not permit the co-opting of the Mount by Muslims in a way that excludes Jews.

It is easy to understand Netanyahu’s unease. Now even the Arab League has weighed in with threats. Arab League deputy chief Ahmed Ben Hilli has called on Arabs and the international community “to put a stop to these practices by the Israeli occupation authorities in Jerusalem. Touching Jerusalem will lead to results with untold consequences.” But these are only threats. The Arab states have enough on their plates to contend with, without throwing their weight around on this issue.

However, we must be honest and recognize that the time of the “status quo” has already come to an end. Rabbi Yisrael Ariel, Director of the Temple Institute, says the Mount “has become a stronghold of Islam. The Arabs get tons of money just to have a presence there and intimidate Jews who dare to ascend the Mount.”

Unless the Jewish presence on the Mount is strengthened, Israeli influence will continue to diminish, with consequences that are unthinkable.

As mentioned above, it is the Muslim Wakf that is in control on the Mount, at least theoretically. And it is a Jordanian Wakf (not a PA Wakf). The Jordanians have a role in what is going on.

Their peace treaty with Israel notwithstanding, they participate in threats, and have done everything in their power to diminish Israeli influence on the Mount. King Abdullah has just declared that he will work against “Israeli unilateralism” in Jerusalem and there have been mumblings about Jordan breaking its peace treaty with Israel over these matters.

King Abdullah is shaky on his throne. He is contending with a host of radical forces at his border, thousands of Syrian refugees inside of his border, and pressure from Palestinian Arabs. Thus he plays it in a manner that he believes will best protect him.

And, consequently, Netanyahu has always done a very careful balancing act with Jordan. It is in the Israeli interest that the king should not fall.

With all of this said, however, it is instructive to consider the text of the 1994 Peace Treaty Agreement between Israel and Jordan. With regard to this issue, it says (emphasis added):

ARTICLE 9

PLACES OF HISTORICAL AND RELIGIOUS SIGNIFICANCE

1. Each party will provide freedom of access to places of religious and historical significance…

2. In this regard, in accordance with the Washington Declaration, Israel respects the present special role of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Muslim Holy shrines in Jerusalem. When negotiations on the permanent status will take place, Israel will give high priority to the Jordanian historic role in these shrines. (This has to do with Israel not giving the PA priority on the Mount.)

3. The Parties will act together to promote interfaith relations among the three monotheistic religions, with the aim of working towards religious understanding, moral commitment, freedom of religious worship, and tolerance and peace.

Not only does this not give Jordan great power on the Mount, it would seem that Jordan has been severely remiss in meeting its responsibilities. Freedom of access to places of religious significance? Freedom of religious worship? Well, now.

Housing Minister Uri Ariel (Habayit Hayehudi) has it right:

“I hear the Jordanians are threatening the peace agreement and [I] wonder if they have forgotten the Six Day War and the years in which King Hussein leaned on Israel. The Temple Mount and Jerusalem are under Israeli sovereignty just as Amman is under the absolute rule of Jordan. They should internalize this fact.”

THIS is the sort of talk we need to hear more of from the Israeli government.

Yehudah Glick has spent the better part of the last 20 years championing the right of Jews to pray on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem – Judaism’s holiest site. On Wednesday night, the Palestinians sent a hit man to Jerusalem to kill him.

And today Glick lays in a coma at Shaare Zedek Medical Center.

Two people bear direct responsibility for this terrorist attack: the gunman, and Palestinian Authority President and PLO chief Mahmoud Abbas. The gunman shot Glick, and Abbas told him to shoot Glick.

Abbas routinely glorifies terrorist murder of Jews, and funds terrorism with the PA’s US- and European-funded budget.

But it isn’t often that he directly incites the murder of Jews.

Two weeks ago, Abbas did just that. Speaking to Fatah members, he referred to Jews who wish to pray at Judaism’s holiest site as “settlers.” He then told his audience that they must remain on the Temple Mount at all times to block Jews from entering.

“We must prevent them from entering [the Temple Mount] in any way…. They have no right to enter and desecrate [it]. We must confront them and defend our holy sites,” he said.

As Palestinian Media Watch reported Thursday, in the three days leading up to the assassination attempt on Glick, the PA’s television station broadcast Abbas’s call for attacks on Jews who seek to enter the Temple Mount 19 times.

While Abbas himself is responsible for the hit on Glick, he has had one major enabler – the Obama administration. Since Abbas first issued the order for Palestinians to attack Jews, there have been two terrorist attacks in Jerusalem. Both have claimed American citizens among their victims. Yet the Obama administration has refused to condemn Abbas’s call to murder Jews either before it led to the first terrorist attack or since Glick was shot Wednesday night.

Not only have the White House and the State Department refused to condemn Abbas for soliciting the murder of Jews. They have praised him and attacked Israel and its elected leader. In other words, they are not merely doing nothing, they are actively rewarding Abbas’s aggression, and so abetting it.

Since Abbas called for Palestinians to kill Jews, the White House and State Department have accused Israel of diminishing the prospect of peace by refusing to make massive concessions to Abbas. The concessions the Americans are demanding include accepting the ethnic cleansing of all Jews from land they foresee becoming part of a future Palestinian state; denying Jews the rights to their lawfully held properties in predominantly Arab neighborhoods; and abrogating urban planning procedures in Jewish neighborhoods in Jerusalem built within the areas of the city that Israel took control over from Jordan in 1967.

The US claims that it has great influence over the Palestinians. If this is true, then as Fatah’s official celebrations of Glick’s attempted murder make clear, that influence is being intentionally exercised in a negative way. The Americans are encouraging the Palestinians to be more violent, more radical and more extreme in their demands of Israel and propagation of Jew-hatred.

The Obama administration is abetting Palestinian terrorism today. And it is doing so after it spent last summer siding with Hamas and its state sponsors Qatar and Turkey in its illegal war against Israel.

Moreover, it is important to note that the most outrageous statements the administration has made to date against Israel came after the first terrorist attack in Jerusalem directly inspired by Abbas’s call to murder Jews.

The most outrageous statements the administration has made about Israel came of course this week with The Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg’s report that senior unnamed Obama administration officials called Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu “a chickensh*t” and a “coward.” They also described an administration in a state of “red hot anger” against Netanyahu and his government. Those statements were made after three-month old Chaya Zissel Braun, an American baby, was murdered by a Palestinian terrorist in Jerusalem in an Abbas-incited attack.

The most distressing aspect of Goldberg’s quotes is that in and of themselves, these profane, schoolyard bully personal attacks against Israel’s elected leader were the mildest part of the story.

The most disturbing thing about the gutter talk is what they tell us about Israel’s role in Obama’s assessments of his political cards as they relate to his nuclear negotiations with Iran.

The senior administration officials called Netanyahu a coward because, among other reasons, he has not bombed Iran’s nuclear installations.

And now, they crowed, it’s too late for Israel to do anything to stop Iran.

They are happy about this claimed state of affairs, because now Obama is free to make a deal with the Iranians that will allow them to develop nuclear weapons at will.

The obscene rhetoric they adopted in their characterization of Netanyahu didn’t come from “red hot anger.” It was a calculated move. Obama knows that he has caved in on every significant redline that he claimed he would defend in the nuclear talks with Iran.

Obama has chosen to demonize Netanyahu and castigate Israel now as a means to transform the debate about Iran into a debate about Israel. The fact that the trash talk about Netanyahu was a premeditated bid to capture the discourse on Iran is further exposed by the fact that Obama has refused to take any action against the officials who made the statements.

He isn’t going to punish them for carrying out his policies.

Obama knows that after next week’s midterm elections, he will likely be facing a Republican-controlled House and Senate. He has no substantive defense against attacks on his policy of enabling the world’s most active state sponsor of terrorism to acquire nuclear weapons. The threat a nuclear- armed Iran poses to the US is self-evident to most people who pay attention to foreign affairs.

Since he can’t win the substantive debate, he wants to change the subject by pretending that the only country that opposes Iran’s nuclear weapons program is Israel, which, his senior advisers insinuated to Goldberg, was apparently bluffing about its danger. After all, if it was a reason for concern, Netanyahu would have bombed Iran three years ago rather than try to accommodate Obama.

As a consequence, any congressional opposition to his deal makes no sense and therefore must be the result of the nefarious Israel’s lobby’s control of Congress. Loyal Americans, like Obama, must stand up to the cowardly, power grabbing, warmongering Jews, led by the coward in chief Netanyahu.

In other words, in castigating Netanyahu and Israel, the Obama administration has decided to use Jew-hatred as a political weapon to defend its policies of abetting Palestinian terrorism and enabling Iran’s nuclear weapons program.

There are critical messages to the Israeli people and our leaders embedded in the Goldberg article.

First, the unbridled attacks against Israel’s democratically elected – and popular – prime minister show us that when we are faced with an inherently hostile administration, the wages of appeasement are contempt.

No Israel leader has done more to appease a US administration than Netanyahu has done to appease Obama. Against the opposition of his party and the general public, Netanyahu in 2009 bowed to Obama’s demand to embrace the goal of establishing a Palestinian state.

Against the opposition of his party and the general public, in 2010 Netanyahu bowed to Obama’s demand and enacted an official 10-month moratorium on Jewish property rights in lands beyond the 1949 armistice lines, and later enacted an unofficial moratorium on those rights.

And Netanyahu bowed to Obama’s pressure, released murderers from prison and conducted negotiations with Abbas that only empowered Abbas and his political war to delegitimize and isolate Israel.

And for all his efforts to appease Obama, today the administration abets Palestinian terrorism and political warfare.

As to Iran, Netanyahu agreed to play along with Obama’s phony sanctions policy, and bowed to Obama’s demand not to attack Iran’s nuclear installations. All of this caused suffering to the Iranian people while giving the regime four-and-ahalf years of more or less unfettered work on its nuclear program.

Netanyahu only cut bait after Obama signed the interim nuclear deal with Iran last November where he effectively gave up the store.

And for Netanyahu’s Herculean efforts to appease Obama, Netanyahu found himself mocked publicly as a coward by senior administration officials who snorted that now it is too late for him to stop Obama from paving Iran’s open road to nuclear power.

One of the assets that Netanyahu’s continuous attempts to please Obama was geared toward securing was US support for Israel at the UN Security Council. And now, according to the senior administration officials, Obama has decided to spend his last two years in office refusing to veto anti-Israel Security Council resolutions.

Before formulating a strategy for dealing with Obama over the next two years, Israelis need to first take a deep breath and recognize that as bad as things are going to get, nothing that Obama will do to us over the next two years is as dangerous as what he has already done. No anti-Israel Security Council resolution, no Obama map of Israel’s borders will endanger Israel as much as his facilitation of Iran’s nuclear program.

As unpleasant as anti-Israel Security Council resolutions will be, and as unpleasant as an Obama framework for Israel’s final borders will be, given the brevity of his remaining time in power, it is highly unlikely that any of the measures will have lasting impact.

At any rate, no matter how upsetting such resolutions may be, Goldberg’s article made clear that Israel should make no concessions to Obama in exchange for a reversal of his plans. Concessions to Obama merely escalate his contempt for us.

Bearing this in mind, Israel’s required actions in the wake of Goldberg’s sources’ warnings are fairly straightforward.

First, to the extent that Israel does have the capacity to damage Iran’s nuclear installations, Israel should act right away. Its capacity should not be saved for a more propitious political moment.

The only clock Israel should care about is Iran’s nuclear clock.

As for the Palestinians, whether Netanyahu’s willingness to stand up to Obama stems from the growing prospect of national elections or from his own determination that there is no point in trying to appease Obama anymore, the fact is that this is the only pragmatic policy for him to follow.

The proper response to the assassination attempt on Yehudah Glick is to allow Jews freedom of worship on the Temple Mount. The proper response to Obama’s nuclear negotiations is a bomb in Natanz. Obama will be angry with Israel for taking such steps. But he is angry with Israel for standing down. At least if we defend ourselves, we will be safe while isolated, rather than unsafe while isolated.

Anti-Semitic violence has France’s Jews heading to the exits.

The lights are going out in the land of the Enlightenment.

The violent, anti-Semitic nightmare Europe thought it would never see again after the Nazi Holocaust is raising its ugly head once more, this time on French soil.

Jew-hatred, mostly among France’s six and a half million Muslims, is reaching such threatening proportions that an increasing number of the country’s 500,000 Jews feel forced to leave their native land to ensure their safety. At one Jewish agency that assists French Jews to emigrate to Israel the telephone, it was reported, “does not stop ringing.

“For 2014, one will have to register a record number of departures of French Jews for Israel since its creation in 1948,” the agency’s director told the French newspaper Le Figaro. “It will safely exceed 5,000 people. In 2013, there were already 3,300, an increase of 73 percent compared with 2012.”

And one can expect the numbers to climb even higher after the recent displays of Jew-hatred in France that “shocked” and “dumbfounded” the country’s Jewish community. In two demonstrations on successive July weekends in central Paris, demonstrators, mostly Muslims of North African and Middle Eastern descent, allegedly protesting Israel’s invasion of the Gaza Strip, shouted anti-Semitic slogans, attacked police, burned vehicles and damaged stores.

Authorities banned the second demonstration after the first one saw two synagogues and a kosher grocery store attacked, all accompanied by shouts of ‘Death to the Jews’. But the ban didn’t make any difference. The demonstration went ahead anyways. Mob rule and barbarism won out over law and order. And the government’s apparent powerlessness, or unwillingness, to enforce the ban was very noticeable.

“Saturday at the synagogue, there was only talk of packing one’s suitcases,” said the publication manager of a Jewish newspaper after the riots. “One has the feeling that this is only the start, that this is going to become more radical…”

According to Le Figaro, some young, French Jewish families are leaving both because of the country’s increasingly anti-Semitic climate, which, they believe, endangers their children, and the French economy’s poor performance. Representatives of France’s Jewish community told the newspaper parents fear putting their children into Jewish schools and summer camps because of possible anti-Semitic attacks. And who can blame them when one recalls French jihadist Mohammed Merah, who murdered four people, three of them children, at a Jewish school in Toulouse in 2012.

“In the face of civil society’s indifference, one senses a keen anxiety of some families concerning their ability to lead a quiet life of Jewish identity in France,” said the emigration agency director.

While this indifference is disturbing enough, the outright support the demonstrators receive from leftist segments of the French political class is equally disconcerting. France’s radical left parties, such as the Green, Communist and New Anti-Capitalist Party have made an alliance with the anti-Semitic demonstrators from the ‘banlieues’ (France’s immigrant ghettos). The New Anti-Capitalist Party, for example, helped organise the first demonstration, and a mayor, also a Green Party member, took part in the banned protest.

This alliance, according to French philosopher Robert Redeker, is due to radical leftists having abandoned their traditional hope of using the working class as the instrument to destroy society. To the radical left’s eternal disappointment, French workers were not revolutionary enough. But Muslim rioters are. In them, the extreme left sees the proletariat’s replacement in carrying out the historic duty of violent revolution.

Members of radical left parties have also made statements that are outrageous in content but nevertheless contribute to the increasingly poisonous and threatening anti-Semitic climate facing France’s Jews. For example, a French deputy to the Europe-Ecology-The Greens (EELV), another environmental political outfit, justified the attacks on the synagogues, claiming on Twitter they are like “embassies.

“When the synagogues are acting like embassies, it is not surprising that they are subjected to the same attacks as an embassy,” he wrote.

Unsurprisingly, the communists were also not behind in making similar, illogical claims to rationalise the violence and Jew-hatred. France’s Communist Party, along with the other radical left parties, was upset authorities banned the second demonstration. It issued a communique calling this measure a “very serious and extremely worrying hindrance concerning the right to demonstrate.” The communique also claimed “small, pro-Israeli groups” were the cause of the first demonstration’s “acts of violence and incitements to hatred.”

Well, one has to admit, it is nice to see someone finally calling for human rights and freedom of political expression while waving the hammer and sickle. But it seems to have escaped the French communists’ notice, along with their party’s history between 1917 and 1991, that it was rioting, anti-Semitic Muslims attacking synagogues and not Jews attacking mosques that led to the ban. Besides, Islamists hardly need anyone to incite them to hate Jews. They’re self-starters.

One communist deputy to France’s national legislature even asked President Francois Hollande, in an open letter, to ban the Jewish Defense League (JDL), whose members defended the synagogues during the attacks. He called the JDL a “criminal, fascist organization,” since it was equally “responsible for the provocations” that led to the violence. Again, this particular communist politician needs a serious history lesson when it comes to “a criminal, fascist organisation.”

France’s mainstream Socialist Party (SP), which currently rules the country, is also a cause for concern. The head of France’s Jewish student union said Jewish students are still waiting for the government to “provide not only answers regarding security, but real proposals to re-establish co-existence in our neighbourhoods, our universities.

“We are posing questions on the ability of the Republic to protect its citizens,” he said.

These students might have to wait a while longer, however, if the SP’s left wing is charged with finding security and co-existence solutions, since it appears to be in the anti-Israel camp. Thirty-three SP deputies of the National Assembly signed a joint communique “for peace and justice in the Middle East” that was sent to media outlets. It called for “French and European authorities to use all their influence to stop immediately and without delay the violence which has been going on since July 8,” the date of Israel’s Gaza invasion. No mention was made of the rockets Hamas had fired at Israel prior to this date that brought about the Israeli military response.

“Together, we have the duty to use our freedom of expression and right to demonstrate peacefully,” the communique further stated.

Understandably, some editors took the communique as a SP call to demonstrate against Israel’s Gaza intervention at an upcoming protest march. Several signatories immediately denied this and blamed the media for misinterpretation, professing their opposition to anti-Semitism. However, about 30 SP deputies did take part in the authorised demonstration, which went off peacefully, possibly because the organizers had to put up security guarantees.

But the socialist deputies’ presence at the demonstration can be understood in a different, darker context as concerns France’s Jews. After the synagogue attacks, Francois Hollande, France’s president and SP leader, declared the fight against anti-Semitism “a national priority.” But the fact that a block of his party’s national deputies chose to be present at an event where anti-Semitic outbursts, possibly violent ones, could have occurred, shows they are not interested in any project that rejects this evil, even one initiated by their own leader. This also casts doubt on their professed anti-Semitism.

Even worse, the Socialist deputies’ presence at the protest can be viewed as a silent endorsement of the previous demonstrations’ anti-Semitic violence. While the extreme left directly supports such vileness by openly blaming the Jews, mainstream socialists are doing the same, but indirectly and with subtlety. Which can only encourage further, anti-Jewish attacks.

France’s Jewish community should also not place much hope on their country’s political class resolving the deteriorating security situation, which, some believe, is now not only unresolvable but “explosive.” Hollande himself, for example, switched from a pro-Israeli position at the start of the Gaza conflict to one now termed “balanced.” This was obviously done to please France’s Muslims, which his party regards as a voting constituency. So after first appearing resolute in supporting Israel, he is now vacillating. France’s Jews can probably expect similar treatment in the future, especially around election time. Besides, one also must be quite cynical to begin with to be able to strike a “balanced” position between Israel and Hamas.

Considering the recent anti-Semitic riots and jihadist attacks their community has endured over the years, including murders, it is no surprise Jews are fleeing France in record numbers. And it is wise they do so, since, with increasing Muslim immigration, one can only expect a corresponding rise in anti-Semitism. No one speaks of a decrease.

But the best reason for France’s Jews to emigrate was revealed in the open letter the communist deputy sent to Hollande, calling for the JDF’s banning. By wanting to strip the synagogues of any defense, such as the JDF represents, the radical left displays its true goal, albeit its short-term one, which is for France to have its own ‘Kristallnacht’.

This also converges nicely with the aims of their anti-Semitic Muslim allies, already experienced in destroying synagogues and churches in Islamic countries. In a nice, Nazi-like touch, the radical left can also be expected to twist any future synagogue destruction to appear as the French Jews’ own fault. The two allies’ long-term goal, which, history has shown, occurs after a ‘Kristallnacht’, is a second Holocaust.

So when anti-Semitic demonstrators are yelling ‘Death to Jews’ on central Parisian streets, France’s Jews should realize they mean it. Some of those leaving now know that they do.

Why normative Jewish life in Europe is unsustainable.

The May 24, 2014 terrorist attack at the Brussels Jewish Museum that killed four people (including an Israeli couple) has spurred serious discussions about European anti-Semitism in European capitals and at the European Union (EU) headquarters in Brussels. The jihadist killer was a French Muslim of Arab North African extraction, named Mehdi Nemmouche, 29, who spent over a year in Syria, and had links with radical Islamists.

Earlier, in 2012, a horrible murder of a rabbi and three children at a Jewish school in Toulouse, France committed by Mohammad Merah, a jihadist, North-African Arab Muslim, points to a pattern. Both Merah and Nemmouche had a history of petty crime, were radicalized in jail, and both were in touch with jihadists abroad, Merah in Afghanistan, and Nemmouche in Syria.

The leniency in which European authorities treat the radicals among their Muslim minorities has encouraged violence against Jews. Whether it is colonial or white guilt, fear of Islamic terror, or of being accused of Islamophobia, the EU tolerance, learned following the Holocaust, has been misdirected. Instead of protecting the victims of intolerance – the Jews – EU authorities are more interested in cultivating their radicalized jihadist Muslim constituents, regardless of the consequences.

In November, 2003, the European Union’s racism watchdog group, the European Monitoring Center on Racism and Xenophobia, shelved a report on anti-Semitism which it had commissioned earlier from a Berlin-based research group. The center’s staff apparently objected to the study’s definition of anti-Semitism, which included some anti-Israeli rhetoric, and to its conclusion that Muslims and pro-Palestinian activists were largely responsible for anti-Jewish vandalism and violence. Yet the Commission saw nothing wrong with publishing a survey claiming that Israel was seen by Europeans as the greatest threat to world peace.

Gabriel Schoenfeld’s book “The Return of Anti-Semitism” (Encounter Books, 2005) documented the anti-Israel backlash that has often taken the form of physical attacks on Jews, including beatings of Jewish children in schools, assaults on Jews wearing religious garb in the streets, and vandalism against Jewish cemeteries and synagogues. But there is also the question of what Schoenfeld regards as a more “genteel” anti-Semitic bias perpetrated by progressive intellectuals. By depicting Zionism as a racist or imperialist creed, these progressive intellectuals are seeking to undermine the legitimacy of Israel, and holding it responsible not only for Palestinian suffering but also for Islamic terrorist attacks on the West.

The greatest threat to Jews in the West now comes from an unholy alliance of leftists and Islamists. The new anti-Semitism in the West, as Schoenfeld put it, usually begins with hostility toward Israel, but it does not stop there. By identifying prominent Jews as “Zionists,” and casting doubt on their allegiance to their native countries, and by attributing to them disproportionate power and influence, the new anti-Semitism has grown to monstrous proportions while cloaking itself in a mantle of political correctness.

The rise of anti-Semitism and hatred of Jews in Europe, and the simultaneous victories of fascist parties (France’s National Front, Greece’s neo-fascist Golden Dawn party, Hungary’s Jobbik Party, to name a few) in the recent European parliamentary elections, has prompted many European Jews to consider abandoning the continent where Six Million European Jews were murdered during WWII, better known as the Holocaust.

A 2012 survey on anti-Semitism conducted by the EU’s Fundamental Rights Agency (FRA) reveals that 66% of Jewish respondents (5847 Jews surveyed) said that anti-Semitism in Europe is increasing, particularly on the Internet. Two thirds of the respondents consider anti-Semitism to be a problem across the eight EU Member States surveyed (Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Sweden and the UK). 76% of the respondents also believe that the situation has become more acute and that anti-Semitism has increased in the country where they live over the past five years. In the 12 months following the survey, close to half of the respondents worry about being verbally insulted or harassed in a public place because they are Jewish. Furthermore, 66% of parents of school-aged children worry that their children could be subjected to anti-Semitic verbal insults or harassment at school or en route, and 52% worry that they could be physically attacked with an anti-Semitic motive while at school or en route. In the past 12 months, over half of the survey’s respondents (57%) heard or saw someone claim that the Holocaust was a myth or that it has been exaggerated.

Simon Heffer, a British journalist who edits the Daily Mail’s RightMinds section, suggested last week (June 6, 2014) that Britain should offer asylum to European Jews fleeing anti-Semitism in continental Europe. He wrote, “Britain may have been shamefully slow in the Thirties to grant asylum to Jews fleeing Hitler, but we should warmly welcome here those who are now seeking a new home.” He added that, “The shocking murder of four people at the Brussels’ Jewish Museum last week by a French Islamic extremist reflects an increase in anti-Semitism in Europe, and above all, in France, where there is a large Muslim population.”

Moshe Kantor, President of the European Jewish Congress, presenting the results of a study on worldwide anti-Semitism in 2013, on April 27, 2014 declared that “Normative Jewish life in Europe is unsustainable.” Kantor asserted that “Jews do not feel safe or secure in certain communities in Europe.”

In a June, 2004 interview with the Jerusalem Post while on a visit to Israel, French-Jewish Nazi hunter Serge Klarsfeld suggested that French Jews should pack their bags and get out. He pointed out that “One of the lessons of the Holocaust is that even if you want to fight against a wave of anti-Semitism, the best thing is to leave if you can.”

Things are unlikely to get better for Jews living in Europe. High unemployment, the result of economic stagnation, and the continued arrival of hundreds of thousands of Muslim immigrants from Africa and the Middle East can only mean the continued scapegoating of the Jewish diminishing minority. The growing electoral power of the Muslim community throughout Europe, and the political bonding between far-left and far-right parties with the Muslim community bodes ill for Jews. The failure of European societies to integrate the Muslim community cannot be ignored as a factor in producing anti-Jewish violence. The EU Member States policies that condemn Israel’s defensive measures against Palestinian terrorism, and the boycott of Israeli products, provide a backwind for both the Islamists and their allies in the far-left and far-right, and an excuse for violent anti-Jewish hate speech that ends up with deadly action. The media in the EU states has likewise been one-sided and biased in its coverage of Israel.

The EU must launch a widespread educational program that will instill the values of tolerance, empathy, and non-violence. Political-correctness is meaningless without a comprehensive coeducational campaign that will explore the common values shared by all religions. School children, both native French and immigrants, must be taught the history of anti-Semitism and the lessons of the Holocaust. And, last but not least, a fair and balanced presentation of Middle East realities is a prerequisite for a behavior change.

While the EU governments and politicians are busy conducting surveys, and at the same time pandering to their radicalized Muslim minorities, normative Jewish life in Europe is slowly disappearing, and for some, it is time to pack up and leave.

And why Jews are leaving.

You may not have noticed, but, over the weekend, Europe died.

“The First World” basically succumbed to a long illness. It gave up the ghost as an economic force, as a culture and even as a continental political entity.

Here are two very different signs:

“Anti-Europe” politicians swept to power in the European Union (EU) parliament on a crest anger at leftist EU bureaucrats who built up layers of regulation of daily life that are unpopular with millions of people;

A well-trained terror squad murdered four people in Brussels, the seat of the EU—only the latest episode of Jew-hatred in Europe’s greatest cities. from London, Paris, Toulouse, Marseilles, Copenhagen

“Oh don’t worry about the Fascists and Right-wingers who won one small election, and don’t get alarmist about one incident of extremism,” say the feel-good crowd, but they are fooling themselves and trying to fool others.

The anti-EU vote in the European Parliament elections is not just a passing phase, and it is not just an eruption of “fascist,” “nativist” or “right-wing” emotions.

There is significant anti-EU feeling among responsible and intelligent people in many countries in Europe—people who have seen years of fat-cat EU politicians living in a fantasy world of statist theories that leave economic and social chaos.

Greece—a country that endlessly rewards incompetence and then gets bailed out—is a prime example. Some Greeks get 14 monthly salaries in 12 months.

Official unemployment continues to rise in most European countries—England, France and even Germany—but the real joblessness has climbed over 20-percent in countries like Spain. Meanwhile, people in England, France and Germany no longer want to pay pensions for slack workers in Greece and Spain.

Frail European economies and the falling value of the Euro currency are not as disturbing as the collapsing values on the streets of London, Paris, Marseilles, Toulouse, Rotterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Brussels.

Europe’s core cities have become quite uncomfortable areas if you are not a Muslim immigrant. They are dangerous “no-go-zones” if you are visibly Jewish.

Slick salesmen coined the phrase “buy now, pay later,” and Europe is now paying.

Europe bought cheap manpower, importing young men from Pakistan, Morocco, Turkey to make up for the loss of European men in two bloody world wars. It was acceptable as a short-term policy, but Europe got addicted to cheap Muslim labor.

Europe made this worse with its very low birth rates, then sped up the import of Muslims laborers, without educating them about European values and history. These men kept to the edge of society, becoming bitter: good recruits for crime and terror.

Then the EU tried to buy the affections of the young immigrants and their second-generation families with big welfare programs. But you cannot buy love or loyalty.

Many of the Muslims felt un-British, un-French, un-Swedish. They could speak the language, but they had no appreciation of living in a mixed modern society.

Instead, many Muslim immigrants reverted to the authoritarianism of their home cultures and their tribal values. Extremist Muslim preachers–dispatched years ago to the West by Saudi money—grabbed the chance to turn the disaffected Muslim workers into a crop of jihadis.

The first target of the jihadis today, like the first target of fascists and Nazis in the 1930′s, is the Jews. Jews are an easy target and popular target.

But Jews are also a weather vein and a lightning rod. They tell us which way the wind is blowing, and they tell us a storm is coming. Jews are the default choice for hatred whether it is Hitler, Stalin or Osama Bin-Laden.

And the Jews have noticed. Jews are leaving Europe, and Europe will regret it. Nations that welcome Jews get richer in many ways. (Check out the Nobel Prize list.) Countries that evict or kill their Jews—whether the Spain of the Inquisition or the modern Arab states—get poorer.

The synagogues in Europe are mostly empty. Many of the Jewish sites in Europe are really memorials or museums, but it is Europe that will itself be just a memory.

Yes, it will take a few years, but it really happened this week.

Why Israel's existence is tied in with being a Jewish state.

What does “Being Jewish” have to do with Arab-Israeli peace? Why does Israel insist Palestinians accept Israel as a Jewish state? What causes Palestinians and other Arabs to be threatened by the “Jewish” character of Israel?

Answer One: Israel is designed to be “Jewish” in the sense that it is meant to be a spiritual home and a physical refuge for Jews—the world’s most persecuted minority.

If you pick a century—or even a decade—in history, you can find how the powers of the day set out to persecute, rob, enslave and kill the Jews of their time: Egyptian pharaohs, Babylonian kings, Roman emperors, European knights, Spanish Inquisitors.

In the last century alone, Nazis and their allies murdered 6,000,000 Jews—a third of the world’s population. In ecological terms, Jews are an endangered species. Israel is a nature preserve for Earth’s most persecuted and perhaps most productive minority.

Israel is a home where Jews can be safe to practice their religion (or not), to identify as Jews or Israelis (or not) without fear of persecution by German Nazis, Russian Cossacks, British Crusaders, French fascists, Islamic maniacs, etc.

Answer Two: Israel must insist on having its “Jewishness” recognized because Arab and Islamic individuals, states and organizations say Jews can only exist as a second-class status within a sovereign Arab or Islamic community. In Islamic terms, this is called being a dhimmi—having protected but limited second-class religious rights.

Making Muslims accept Israel as Jewish really means making them accept that Jews have political and cultural rights like Arabs and Muslims. Arabs have 22 sovereign states whose area is bigger than Europe. The Muslims have 50 or 60 states. No one questions that. So, the Jews can have one state the size of New Jersey.

The so-called “Arab World” and the “Islamic Community” say they do not have an ideological problem with Jews as a religion, but they are being misleading in asserting this. The truth is that they do not have a problem with Jews as long as the Jews “stay in their place.”

Many Arabs and Muslims have a huge problem with the Jewish nationalism known as Zionism. Recognizing Israel as Jewish means Jews are not just a religion but are also a nation, have national rights, and cannot be evicted from their homeland.

When Jew-haters (or genteel anti-Semites from Britain or Norway) say they do not hate Jews but only hate Israel or Zionism, they are lying. It is like saying they are not against Jews but only against Jews having arms, legs, eyes—the ability to see for themselves, build for themselves and protect themselves.

Zionism means a Jewish state, a Jewish refuge, a predominantly Jewish home. This is not just a practical option but a moral imperative. Worldwide, Jews are safer when there is a Jewish state, because it helps them.

In addition, non-Jews are also safer because a Jewish state does not persecute Muslims, Christians, Druze, Bahai, Circassians and others who live in that Jewish state, and that same “Jewish state” also helps to protect non-Jewish minorities in nearby states, and it often gives them refuge from persecution.

The 22 Arab states and 50-odd Islamic states cannot make that claim.

Answer Three: Many Arabs, many Muslims and particularly the Palestinians are threatened by a “Jewish” Israel because Israel is real and successful—a modern state with traditional values. The Jewish state’s very success casts a harsh light on the failures of the “Arab” and “Islamic” states and their values.

This is particularly true of the Palestinians who cannot even agree on who will lead them—the PLO in the West Bank or Hamas or Islamic Jihad in Gaza. Palestinians feel threatened by Israel because of their own internal weakness and incoherence.

This is not just political frailty but a weakness of spirit. Palestinians sense something artificial about their own identity. The concept “Palestinian” is relatively new in Arab thinking. It is a foreign word in Arabic. “Palestine” is never mentioned in the Quran, Islam’s holy book. “Israel” and “the Jews” are mentioned scores of times.

This internal Palestinian lack of identity may be the psychological reason for the PLO-Hamas long-time insistence that Israel cease to exist. Perhaps this explains why both PLO and Hamas refuse to recognize the Jewish character of Israel.

Even so-called Arab “moderates” (who are not really moderate) like PLO leader Mahmoud Abbas violate treaties with Israel. They try to boycott, isolate and hurt Israel. Indeed, Abbas and other “moderates” recoil in disgust at the suggestion of accepting a “Jewish” Israel.

On the other hand, staunch Israeli patriots or religious Jews do not fear Arab nationalism, Muslim religion or Palestinian sentiment. Most Israelis feel strong enough about themselves to accept Palestinian Arab nationalism, even as most Arabs still reject the very idea of Zionism or a Jewish state.

The real question remains: Are Arabs, Muslims and especially the Palestinians able to make peace by accepting the Jewish state as a real partner and neighbor?

*

Why Jew hatred and the BDS movement can't be separated.

Originally published by the Jerusalem Post.

On March 19, it will be two years since Mohammed Merah slaughtered three Jewish children and a rabbi in the courtyard of the Ozar Hatorah Jewish day school in Toulouse, France.

Far from being a wake-up call that forced the French to their senses, and compelled them to purge their society of the Jew-hatred that inspired Merah to film himself blowing his victims’ brains out, his act served as an inspiration for other anti-Semites.

According to the French Interior Ministry, anti-Semitic attacks rose 60 percent in 2012 over 2011 levels.

Over the past decade and a half, anti-Semitism has moved from the backroom to the living room throughout Europe.

All aspects of Jewish life are under assault.

Religious observance has become an act of near rebellion against social graces.

In 2009, the British Supreme Court ruled that Jewish schools that followed religious tradition and only admitted children who have a Jewish mother were guilty of racial discrimination.

In other words, the British Supreme Court said that traditional Judaism is racist.

In country after country, campaigns to ban Jewish ritual practices are in full swing. Government after government has passed or moved toward passing bans on shechita, Jewish traditional slaughter of animals. Mila, infant male circumcision, is also under assault. Both, of course, are foundations of Jewish observance.

Denmark is the latest European state to ban shechita. And the movement to implement a similar ban in Britain has grown so popular that Prime Minister David Cameron felt compelled to oppose it during his speech at the Knesset on Wednesday.

Of course, even more popular than accusing Jews of subjecting cows and chickens to monstrous slaughter is the practice of accusing Jews of subjecting Palestinians to monstrous slaughter.

For Europe’s elite, radical and increasingly, violent anti-Zionism has become the anti-Semitism of choice. Among other things, anti-Zionists believe that Israel is inherently illegitimate and necessarily, and purposely, evil. For them, Israel is Nazi Germany.

And supporters of Israel are for them the greatest evildoers in the world. They should be accorded no courtesy, and be treated as human scum.

This has been made clear, most vividly in recent years on college campuses where pro-Israel supporters are run off campuses, shouted off stages and barred from presenting their views.

One recent episode of this sort occurred on March 5 at the National University of Ireland, Galway, where British professor Alan Johnson tried to speak in opposition to an initiative to get the university to join the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel.

A YouTube video of the event showed how a mob of BDS supporters prevented him from speaking. They shouted curses at him and his colleagues and demanded they “get the f*** off our campus!” Writing of the experience and the hate movement that stands behind it in The Times of Israel, Johnson reported that the student leading the effort to silence him is the head of NUIG’s Palestine Solidarity Society named Joseph Loughnane.

In 2008, Loughnane said, “The Jews run the American media and push their agenda.”

Johnson wrote that “the border between being radical and transgressive [toward Israel] and being anti-Semitic is now porous.”

Although accurate, Johnson’s assertion understates the problem.

Opposing Judaism and Jews, denying Jewish rights to education and ritual observance, and attacking Jews; and opposing the Jewish state, denying Jews their right to self-determination and attacking supporters of the Jewish state, are two sides of the same coin. There is no border – porous or solid between them. They are one and the same.

And all anti-Semites know it.

On Monday, The New York Times reported that attempts by French authorities to silence the anti-Semitic comic Dieudonne M’bala M’bala have backfired. The performer who invented and popularized the inverted Nazi salute has bridged the divide between French Muslim anti-Semites and French fascist anti-Semites.

The habit of Dieudonne’s fans to have their pictures taken at Jewish sites and Nazi death camps while performing the salute caused French officials to ban his public performances, arguing reasonably that his incendiary anti-Semitic incitement is a threat to public safety.

Rather than listen to authorities and recognize that Dieudonne’s actions are obscene, hateful and dangerous, the official ban on his performances has only raised his popularity. According to the Times, his most recent YouTube video had two million hits in its first week.

The Times argues that by banning Dieudonne, French officials only helped him by raising his public profile and transforming him into a martyr for freedom of speech.

But this is not the real reason that the ban has backfired.

The ban backfired because the French don’t take the government seriously.

How can it be wrong for Frenchmen to parade through the streets of Paris ordering the Jews to leave the country, when the French government also trucks in anti-Semitism? How can French authorities’ 14-year defense of France 2 television network’s invention of the Muhammad al-Dura blood libel be squared with their denunciation of Dieudonne? It will be recalled that in October 2000, France 2’s Israel correspondent Charles Enderlain broadcast a story where he presented doctored footage that created the illusion Dura had been killed while crouching in fear, by venal IDF soldiers in Gaza. That doctored footage served as the impetus for massive anti-Semitic demonstrations, and murderous anti-Semitic attacks on Jews in Israel, throughout Europe and around the world.

In January 2006, Ilan Halimi was kidnapped and tortured to death because he was a Jew.

Despite the fact that during his 26 days in captivity Halimi’s kidnappers telephoned his mother 700 times, during which she heard the tortured cries of her son while his kidnappers recited verses from the Koran over the phone, French law enforcement officials insisted that Halimi’s abduction was a run-of-the-mill kidnapping for ransom, rather than an anti-Semitic hate crime. Consequently they refused to accept that his life was in danger, or that they should devote resources to finding and saving him.

And their denial of the nature of the crime didn’t end when Halimi turned up naked, at the railway siding, with burns over 80 percent of his body, only to die shortly thereafter.

It took French authorities another week to acknowledge that Halimi was murdered because he was a Jew.

Two years ago, French authorities tried to hide the fact that Merah was a Muslim, claiming instead that he was a Nazi. When they were finally forced to acknowledge the truth, they blamed Israel for his crime.

Speaking to reporters, then-French interior minister Claude Gueant said that Merah was associated with al-Qaida and that he was upset about what Gueant referred to as Israel’s “murder” of Palestinian children.

The 17,000 Frenchmen who marched through the streets of Paris on the eve of International Holocaust Memorial Day in January and called for the Jews to get out of France see through French authorities’ hypocrisy.

French and other European authorities who libel Israel by projecting onto the Jewish state the crimes committed by Muslim terrorists against Jewish children do not scare the likes of Dieudonne and his millions of supporters.

They know it is a joke when the same officials who cultivate and legitimize anti-Semitic blood libels profess shock and outrage at their unvarnished Jew-hatred. They are not intimidated.

And they certainly are not convinced of the error of their ways.

The simple fact is that you cannot fight anti-Semitism by endorsing it. The only way you can fight anti-Semitism is by fighting all forms of anti-Semitism, including the demonization and delegitimization of Israel.

The European have good company in denying this basic fact. Senior American Jewish leaders similarly ignore it.

EARLIER THIS month, the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Committee announced their opposition to state bills barring universities from using public funds to fund academic organizations that participate in boycotts against Israel. Bills of this type are being debated by the Maryland and New York state legislatures and are being drafted at the federal level by members of Congress.

Both groups claimed that they oppose the bills even though they oppose the BDS movement, because they claim that such actions limit academic freedom.

Three things stand out in their explanation.

First, preventing taxpayer money from being used to fund campaigns to demonize and criminalize Israel and so promote hatred of Jews has nothing to do with limiting academic freedom.

Second, the actions of BDS activists have nothing to do with academic freedom. By demonizing and intimidating students and faculty who oppose them, their aim is to end both free speech and academic freedom.

And conversely, fighting them advances both free speech and academic freedom.

Finally, it is simply bizarre that the ADL and the AJC felt compelled to weigh in on this issue to begin with. If they didn’t want to be associated with this action, they could have kept their mouths shut.

By entering the fray on behalf of the BDS movement, they gave legitimacy to it, despite their claims that they oppose anti-Israel boycotts.

Both the ADL and the AJC present themselves as among other things, Jewish civil rights groups that aim to defend Jews, including the Jewish state.

And yet, here they are making an artificial distinction between the two – a distinction not shared by the haters.

It is no doubt tempting to accept the artificial distinction between rejecting Israel’s right to exist and rejecting the right of Jews to practice Judaism. Doing so allows you to pretend that the problem isn’t as bad as it is, and to pretend that the fates of Israel and Jews of the Diaspora are not directly linked. It allows you to pretend that Jewish Americans who join the BDS movement are not anti-Semites. And it allows you to pretend that European leaders who minimize real anti-Semitic crimes by equating them with imaginary Israeli crimes are not inherently hostile to Jews.

But you cannot fight Jew-hatred by making distinctions between its various forms. They are all components of the same thing. And either you fight all of them, with no distinction, or you fight none of them, and even legitimize the bigotry.

Many books have been written about the financing of war, but Edwin Black’s latest book is about the financing of peace. That would seem like a positive theme, except that Black reveals that the financing of peace is really the financing of war.

Edwin Black has a history of writing investigative reports about the financing of conflict and Financing the Flames: How Tax-Exempt and Public Money Fuel a Culture of Confrontation and Terror in Israel is firmly in that tradition. Black picks up where he left off with his investigation of the Ford Foundation’s bigoted Anti-Israel shenanigans at Durban to look at the left’s financing of the conflict in Israel.

Israel is a small country and most Israeli Jews and Arabs already know that the conflict is stirred up by interested parties. They know that rocks don’t just get thrown randomly at soldiers and confrontations between Jewish and Arab villages are often staged by interested parties who don’t even live there.

The conflict was always externally encouraged, whether it was the British and the Nazis playing spy games or Iran and the Soviet Union funneling money and instructions to terrorists, but the perpetuation of the conflict has interwoven a mesh of conflict profiteers into the country, from hordes of stringers and journalists looking for a conflict photo or terror interview to sell, and over to the networks of non-profit organizations stirring up violence on an even larger scale and for even uglier motives.

It is this network of non-profits, some little known outside Israel, which is the topic of Black’s book.

The demonization of Israel, from the high range of official documents like the Goldstone Report to the low range of viral videos on YouTube, doesn’t just happen. It’s the for-profit work of non-profit organizations that finance a campaign that sometimes falls just narrowly short of open terrorism.

In Financing the Flames, Black tracks how American foreign aid funds terrorists and how tax-exempt contributions to the New Israel Fund finance violent clashes between soldiers and protesters linking them together in the new economics of the war against Israel and the perpetuation of the violence.

The business of peace resembles the business of war and much of the money being lavished on ending the conflict actually perpetuates it. Whether it’s foreign aid that ends up in the pockets of terrorists, motivating them to bomb and kill, or non-profit grants to social justice organizations like the New Israel Fund whose grantees seek to provoke confrontations to justify their existence, the flames of war are being fed by dollars and euros earmarked for promoting peace.

Financing the Flames breaks down everything from the dollar amounts paid to convicted terrorists ($400 a month for under 3 years, $1,690 for over 10 years and $2,000 for over 15 years) to how the viral videos of Israeli soldiers clashing with civilians are staged (taunt the soldiers, insult their mothers, get right in their faces, edit out the parts that show the incitement) to how a money trail that begins with George Soros ends with violence and hate.

Black doesn’t write in abstracts, instead he gets down and dirty with the personalities; from a meeting at a hotel with the arrogant director of the New Israel Fund to a trailer park in Florida that serves as the real base of operations for an anti-Israel activist group that uses false European fronts to cover its tracks. Financing the Flames takes the reader into encounters with Israeli soldiers and Arab sheiks who surprisingly agree on wanting foreign financed NIF social justice front groups like B’Tselem to go away and leave them alone.

An Arab farmer tells Edwin Black how social justice groups deliberately plant olives in a nature preserve and then stage confrontations for the cameras when the authorities tear up the trees.

“Why do they do it?” he asks rhetorically. “They are encouraged to make trouble.”

Financing the Flames establishes how often “peace groups” act in such bad faith ways, engaging in pointless confrontations and promoting boycotts that only hurt the people they claim to want to help while appearing utterly disinterested in working toward peace.

The culture of activism that has grown around the conflict has made things worse, Black suggests. This isn’t a new phenomenon. Western NGOs routinely make things worse when they egotistically and blindly interfere in foreign countries, but their actions in Israel are often uniquely malicious.

Some of the most shocking material in Financing the Flames includes the New Israel’s Fund involvement in child endangerment as children are dispatched to harass Israeli soldiers. Paying children to throw rocks at soldiers was a common journalistic tactic back in the Intifada 80s and produced plenty of dramatic photos and videos, but there is something disturbing about a non-profit that is being heavily supported by American tax-exempt contributions helping finance this sort of behavior.

The journalists and the non-profits have a profit motive and an ideological motive to perpetuate the conflict. The money comes from American billionaires and foundations, from the Ford Foundation, which made the New Israel Fund possible, from George Soros, a former Nazi collaborator, while the people on the ground are treated like puppets manipulated into dancing for their amusement.

Black’s journalism is meticulously researched and he brings to it the same moralistic eye for detail that informed his earlier work. Edwin Black had examined the funding mechanisms behind the Holocaust and with Financing the Flames he once again charts how modern day genocide is financed and promoted, from the Islamic Development Bank to the State Department to the donor down the block.

The wires cross as money from Islamic terror states and from liberal foundations in the United States go to finance the same organizations and seemingly for the same purposes revealing that when it comes to Israel, Saudi Arabia and the Ford Foundation, George Soros and the Saudi king are all on the same page.

Sheikh Zaid al-Jabari of Hebron, a city that has become a favorite target of social justice activists looking to shoot viral videos targeting Israeli soldiers and residents, says, “Millions of dollars are given to these organizations, and they say it is for peace… instead of putting water on the fire, they are fanning the flames.”

The non-profits of the left didn’t begin this conflict, but Edwin Black’s book establishes that they most certainly are fanning the flames.

The millions and billions of dollars flowing into Gaza and the West Bank from foreign aid and non-profits aren’t making things better. Even under the guise of peace, there is still more money in war.

Editor’s note: Remembering Eric Hoffer’s prophetic words from 1968:

The Jews are a peculiar people; things permitted to other nations are forbidden to the Jews. Other nations drive out thousands, even millions of people and there is no refugee problem. Russia did it, Poland and Czechoslovakia did it. Turkey threw out a million Greeks, and Algeria a million Frenchman.

Indonesia threw out heaven knows how many Chinese and no one says a word about refugees. But in the case of Israel , the displaced Arabs have become eternal refugees. Everyone insists that Israel must take back every single one.

Arnold Toynbee calls the displacement of the Arabs an atrocity greater than any committed by the Nazis. Other nations when victorious on the battlefield dictate peace terms. But when Israel is victorious, it must sue for peace.

Everyone expects the Jews to be the only real Christians in this world. Other nations, when they are defeated, survive and recover but should Israel be defeated it would be destroyed. Had Nasser triumphed last June [1967], he would have wiped Israel off the map, and no one would have lifted a finger to save the Jews.

No commitment to the Jews by any government, including our own, is worth the paper it is written on. There is a cry of outrage all over the world when people die in Vietnam or when two Blacks are executed in Rhodesia. But, when Hitler slaughtered Jews no one remonstrated with him.

The Swedes, who are ready to break off diplomatic relations with America because of what we do in Vietnam, did not let out a peep when Hitler was slaughtering Jews. They sent Hitler choice iron ore, and ball bearings, and serviced his troop trains to Norway.

The Jews are alone in the world. If Israel survives, it will be solely because of Jewish efforts. And Jewish resources. Yet at this moment, Israel is our only reliable and unconditional ally. We can rely more on Israel than Israel can rely on us. And one has only to imagine what would have happened last summer [1967] had the Arabs and their Russian backers won the war, to realize how vital the survival of Israel is to America and the West in general.

I have a premonition that will not leave me; as it goes with Israel so will it go with all of us. Should Israel perish, the Holocaust will be upon us all.

A community that stands for nothing but openness, stands for nothing.

Reprinted from TimesofIsrael.com.

Will students like me remember 2013 as a year when the Boycott, Divest and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel made headlines with calls for academic boycotts? Will we remember it as a time when the American Jewish community debated how “open” our university campus Hillels should be?

As a graduate student at Harvard University, and a member of the local Harvard Hillel board, I have been disappointed to see many news outlets covering these respective, albeit related, news stories interview professors, administrators and university presidents, while leaving out an important voice: the very students these headlines effect.

In April, the Asian-American Studies Association became the first professional academic association in the United States to call for an academic boycott of Israel. In early December, the American Studies Association (ASA) voted to boycott Israeli universities and asked American scholars to sever ties with Israeli academic institutions. The Modern Language Association comprised of 30,000 members, opened its annual conference in early January with a panel on “Academic Boycotts: A Conversation about Israel and Palestine.”

Such boycott-resolutions are not only a clear violation of academic freedom but also part of a global campaign to undermine the moral and political foundations of the State of Israel. The BDS movement openly asserts its opposition to the existence of a Jewish State.

BDS activists have long relied on academic organizations and platforms to promote their cause. The college campus has become a hotbed for anti-Israel activity and while there are examples of students speaking out against student organized anti-Israel and BDS activities, in the classroom, it becomes more difficult. When a professor uses his classroom to espouse lies and hatred against Israel, many students do not speak up for fear of grade retribution.

With the rising surge of BDS on campus, it is becoming increasingly important that students have a safe haven to discuss, criticize and support Israel free from those who seek its destruction. Campus Hillels are one place, an important place, where students from a broad spectrum of backgrounds and viewpoints can and should be able to come together and find support to speak up against those who seek Israel’s demise.

Last year at Harvard, a group of students, the Harvard College Progressive Jewish Alliance, requested to cosponsor an event at the Harvard Hillel entitled “Jewish Voices Against the Israeli Occupation” with the Harvard College Palestine Solidarity Committee, a group that wholly endorses the BDS movement. Rabbi Jonah Steinberg, Harvard Hillel’s executive director, rejected the students’ request citing Hillel International’s standards of partnership, enforced at Harvard Hillel, that prohibit partnerships with or sponsorships of groups (Jewish or non-Jewish) that deny the right of Israel to exist. Subsequently, the student-organized event took place outside of Harvard Hillel, and the point was made that Harvard Hillel would not lend its name or resources to groups that support BDS.

Sadly, such is not the case at all Hillel Houses around the country. On December 8, the student board of Swarthmore College’s Hillel passed a resolution to defy Hillel’s national guidelines entirely. In rejecting Hillel’s guidelines for campus activities, Swarthmore’s chapter wrote “all are welcome to walk through our doors and speak with our name and under our roof, be they Zionist, post-Zionist, or non-Zionist.”

In response, Eric Fingerhut, the new President of Hillel International, stated in a letter to the Swarthmore Hillel student board that “Hillel International expects all campus organizations that use the Hillel name to adhere to [its] guidelines…Anti-Zionists will not be permitted to speak using the Hillel name or under the Hillel roof, under any circumstances.”

Since issuing this response, Fingerhut has received criticism from a variety of media sources decrying how Hillel International’s policy censors speech. But Hillel, like any private organization, has the right to refuse to underwrite, sponsor or endorse a speaker or event, particularly if the speaker or event discriminates against the Jewish people, and Hillel does not prevent such speakers from taking their message elsewhere.

Other outlets have acknowledged Hillel’s right to have guidelines, but have criticized the guidelines themselves, citing concern about the inability for Jewish students to engage in constructive dialogue with Palestinian students on campus.

Inside Hillel, as Fingerhut wrote in a post on Hillel’s website on December 29th, “Hillel welcomes all students, Jewish and non-Jewish, to discuss and debate topics.” There is a difference, however, between inviting individual students into the Hillel and hosting or providing a platform to a group that does not recognize Israel’s right to exist as a Jewish State.

This past September, a diverse group of students gathered for lunch at the University of Southern California Hillel. Jewish, Muslim, and Christian students came together to listen, learn and initiate an interreligious dialogue about peace building in the Middle East. Guest speakers included Rabbi Ron Kronish, founder and director of the Interreligious Coordinating Council in Israel and Qadi Iyad Zahalka, the judge of the Jerusalem Muslim Sharia Court of the State of Israel. According to Danielle Haberer, a Jewish student at USF who attended the event, “though sensitive, complex questions were asked, in the end, we left with more knowledge about one another than we had entered with and we left with the promise that dialogue would persist.” At the Drexel University Hillel, the pro-Israel student group, Dragons for Israel, recently cohosted a Middle East Peace Night with the Muslim Students Association.

The reason these events were possible? In each scenario, the Palestinian and Arab student groups and speakers did not endorse the BDS movement. Jewish and Muslim students were thus able to engage in constructive dialogue inside the Hillel House.

Hillel’s guidelines do not prevent students from engaging with Palestinian students on campus. Instead, the guidelines serve as a necessary signal to both Jewish and non-Jewish groups about the parameters that are necessary in order to achieve productive, peaceful and tolerant dialogue. Without Hillel’s guidelines, it is unlikely that students that support the BDS movement would ever come to realize the anti-Semitic, hate-filled nature of the movement and eventually, hopefully, withdraw their support.

Moreover, if Hillel were to abolish its guidelines and effectively provide a platform for speakers and groups that sought to destroy Israel, it would become much more difficult for students on campus to speak up and correct the misinformation and lies spewed by anti-Israel activists on campus. After all, if the Center for Jewish Life on campus is willing to host voices that seek to undermine the legitimacy of a Jewish State, how can I, as a student, credibly suggest (as I should) that such groups preach hate, not peace.

A community that stands for nothing but openness, stands for nothing. By taking a stand against groups that seek Israel’s destruction, Hillel serves to empower and encourage the next generation of American Jews to speak out and expose the anti-Semitic goals of the BDS movement. If not us, then who?

Can the advance of the anti-Israel movement be reversed?

Originally published by the Jerusalem Post.

In the 1960s, the American Left embraced the anti-Vietnam War movement as its cri de coeur.

In the 1970s, the Left’s foreign policy focus shifted to calling for unilateral nuclear disarmament by the US and its Western allies.

In the 1980s, supporting the Sandinista Communists’ takeover of Nicaragua became the catechism of the Left.

In the 1990s, the war on global capitalism – that is, the anti-globalization movement – captivated the passions of US Leftists from coast to coast.

In the 2000s, it was again, the anti-war movement.

This time the Left rioted and demonstrated against the war in Iraq.

And in this decade, the main foreign policy issue that galvanizes the passions and energies of the committed American Left is the movement to delegitimize Israel’s right to exist.

This week has been a big one for the anti-Israel movement. In the space of a few days, two quasi academic organizations – the American Studies Association and the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association – have launched boycotts against Israeli universities. Their boycotts follow a similar one announced in April by the Asian Studies Association.

These groups’ actions have not taken place in isolation. They are of a piece with ever-escalating acts of anti-Israel agitation in college campuses throughout the United States.

Between the growth of Israel Apartheid Day (or Week, or Month) from a fringe exercise on isolated campuses to a staple of the academic calendar in universities throughout the US and Canada, and the rise of the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement to wage economic war against the Jewish state, anti-Israel activism has become the focal point of Leftist foreign policy activism in the US and throughout the Western world.

Every week brings a wealth of stories about new cases of aggressive anti-Israel activism. At the University of Michigan last week, thousands of students were sent fake eviction notices from the university’s housing office. A pro-Palestinian group distributed them in dorms across campus to disseminate the blood libel that Israel is carrying out mass expulsions of Palestinians.

At Swarthmore College, leftist anti-Israel Jewish students who control Hillel are insisting on using Hillel’s good offices to disseminate and legitimate anti-Israel slanders.

And the Left’s doctrinaire insistence that Israel is the root of all evil is not limited to campuses.

At New York’s 92nd Street Y, Commentary editor John Podhoretz was booed and hissed by the audience for trying to explain why the ASA’s just-announced boycott of Israel was an obscene act of bigotry.

Many commentators have rightly pointed out that the ASA and the NAISA are fringe groups.

They represent doctorate holders who chose to devote their careers to disciplines predicated not on scholarship, but on political activism cloaked in academic regalia whose goal is to discredit American power. The ASA has only 5,000 members, and only 1,200 of them voted on the Israel- boycott resolution. The NAISA has even fewer members.

It would be wrong, however, to use the paltry number of these fringe groups’ members as means to dismiss the phenomenon that they represent. They are very much in line with the general drift of the Left.

Rejecting Israel’s right to exist has become part of the Left’s dogma. It is a part of the catechism.

Holding a negative view of the Jewish state is a condition for membership in the ideological camp. It is an article of faith, not fact.

Consider the background of the president of the ASA. Curtis Marez is an associate professor in the Ethnic Studies Department at the University of California, San Diego. His area of expertise is Chicano Film and Media Studies.

He doesn’t know anything about Israel. He just knows that he’s a Leftist. And today, Leftists demonize Israel. Their actions have nothing to do with anything Israel does or has ever done. They have nothing to do with human rights. Hating Israel, slandering Israel and supporting the destruction of Israel are just things that good Leftists do.

And Marez was not out of step with his fellow Leftists who rule the roost at UCSD. This past March the student council passed a resolution calling for the university to divest from companies that do business with Israel.

Why? Because hating Israel is what Leftists do.

The Left’s crusade against the Jewish state began in earnest in late 2000. The Palestinians’ decision to reject statehood and renew their terror war against Israel ushered in the move by anti-Israel forces on the Left to take over the movement. And as they have risen, they have managed to silence and discredit previously fully accredited members of the ideological Left for the heresy of supporting Israel.

This week, Harvard Law Prof. Alan Dershowitz retired after 50 years on the law faculty. His exit, the same week as the ASA and the NAISA announced their boycotts of Israeli universities, symbolized the marginalization of the pro-Israel Left that Dershowitz represented.

For years, Dershowitz has been a non-entity in leftist circles. His place at the table was usurped by anti-Israel Jews like Peter Beinart. And now Beinart is finding himself increasingly challenged by anti-Semitic Jews like Max Blumenthal.

The progression is unmistakable.

The question is, is it irreversible? Must supporters of Israel choose between their support for Israel and their affinity for the Left? Certainly it is true that the more the issue of support for Israel splits along ideological and partisan lines, the more reasonable it is for supporters of Israel to move to the ideological camp and the party that supports Israel, and away from the ones that do not support Israel.

The average voter is not in a position to change the positions of his party or the dogma of his ideological camp. He can take it or leave it. With rejection of Israel now firmly entrenched in the Left’s dogma, and with the Left firmly in control of the Democratic Party under President Barack Obama’s leadership, for those who care about Israel, the Republican Party is a more natural fit.

So, too, the ideological Right is far more congenial to the Jewish state than the Left.

While the most sensible place for supporters of Israel to be today is on the political Right, it is also true that it is neither smart nor responsible to abandon the Left completely. Jews should be able to feel comfortable as Jews, and as supporters of Israel everywhere. Ideological camps that castigate Jews for their pride in the accomplishments of the Jewish state, and for their support and concern for its survival and prosperity, are camps in desperate need of fixing.

But we should not fool ourselves. Challenging the likes of Marez, or the Swarthmore students, or Max Blumenthal or Peter Beinart to a reasoned debate is an exercise in futility. They do not care about human rights. They do not care that Israel is the only human rights-respecting democracy in the Middle East. They do not care about the pathological nature of Palestinian society. They do not care about the Jewish people’s indigenous rights and international legal rights to sovereignty not only over Tel Aviv and Haifa, but over Hebron and Ramallah.

Being hypocrites doesn’t bother them either.

You can talk until you’re blue in the face about the civilian victims of the Syrian civil war, or the gender apartheid in Saudi Arabia and the absence of religious freedom throughout the Muslim world. But they don’t care. They aren’t trying to make the world a better place.

Facts cannot compete with their faith. Reason has no place in their closed intellectual universe.

To accept reason and facts would be an act of heresy.

Marez may be a hypocrite, and even a servant of evil. But he is no heretic.

The only real way to mitigate the hard Left’s devotion to Israel’s destruction is by changing the power balance on the Left. For the past decade, donors like George Soros have been open in their commitment to elect Democrats who oppose the US’s alliance with Israel. A decade ago, Soros and fellow Jewish American billionaire Peter Lewis funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into Moveon.org. Moveon.org became a clearinghouse for anti-Israel and anti-Jewish messages that became the stock in trade of the ideological Left, and of Democratic candidates in need of campaign funding.

It was due to then-Democratic senator Joe Lieberman’s refusal to get on the Soros- and Lewis-funded anti-Israel bandwagon in the 2004 elections, that they turned Moveon.org against Lieberman in the 2006 Democratic primary for his seat in the Senate. His Democratic challenger, Ned Lamont, who won the primary, ran a campaign laced with anti-Israel and anti-Jewish propaganda.

There are Democratic funders, like Penny Pritzker, Lester Crown and Haim Saban, who support Israel. If they were so inclined, they could use their considerable funds to change the power equation in the Democratic Party. They could cultivate and support pro-Israel Democratic candidates. They could take the Democratic Party back.

This week ended with Democratic Sen. Charles Schumer finally breaking his silence on Obama’s Iran deal and joining forces with his fellow Democrat Sen. Robert Menendez and Republican Sen. Mark Kirk to defy Obama on Iran’s nuclear weapons program. Given Obama’s floundering popularity, it is possible that Schumer’s move will open the door for a change in the Democratic Party.

In truth, there is no reason for the Democratic Party to remain in place. It isn’t ordained that the Democrats must cleave to the hard Left.

The rejection of Israel is not a natural component of leftist dogma. It’s just that for the past decade, the smart money and the rising power on the Left has been with those who oppose Israel’s existence as a strong, independent Jewish state.

While the ASA and its comrades are on the fringes of academia, they are not fringe voices on the Left. The Left has embraced the cause of Israel’s destruction. And its financial power has made it difficult for pro-Israel Democrats to act on their convictions, and those of their voters.

The combination of an exodus of supporters of Israel – Jews and non-Jews alike – from the Left and from the Democratic Party on the one hand, and generous funding for pro-Israel Democratic candidates on the other, can change the equation.

America lost the Vietnam War. The Sandinistas are back in change in Nicaragua. But if people are willing to stand up now and be counted, America need not harm Israel.

Crown Heights' new councilwoman and her interesting views on black violence against Jews.

What do you think the face of racism looks like? The snarling, ugly, crooked teeth, hunched back, and stove-pipe hat of a Simon Legree?

Come on, man. This is 2013.

The face of racism today is pretty. Polished. Smooth talking. Cloying. It looks like the face to the left.

This is the Councilwoman-elect Laurie Cumbo, soon to represent the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn. The same place in the news for black-on-Jewish violence. Most recently taking the form of what people are calling the Knockout Game.

Call it what you will, in Crown Heights it features black people attacking Jewish people. Then laughing. And if there is a bit of robbery involved, that’s all good too.

The solons at the New York Times may be trying to figure out if the Knockout Game is real or a figment of this correspondent’s imagination. But Jewish people in Crown Heights are way past that: They know they are under constant threat of black mob violence. Whatever we are calling it this year.

That is nothing new for this neighborhood: I documented black on Jewish violence in Crown Heights and other areas in White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to American and How the Media Ignore It. (The Amazon #1 Best Selling Civil Rights Book in America, thank you very much!)

And if you want to go back to 1991, I was happy to see a recent article where the author pointed out the Crown Heights riots of that year so ably abetted by Al Sharpton were not “fights.” They were attacks. And city leaders allowed them to continue for three days.

The soon-to-be honorable Cumbo is also way past any doubt whether blacks are systematically beating and terrorizing Jewish people in Crown Heights. “As an African American woman, this is challenging, because I recognize that it is Black children and not Jewish children that are playing the ‘Knock Out Game’,” she said on her Facebook page – with approving comments from Eliot Spitzer, no less.

Cumbo is also way past explaining racial violence. That’s old news as well. Though she does go through the motions with a few half-hearted stabs at this institution failing that, this leader not talking about that.

Everyone knows that.

Cumbo is now in full reparations mode. Thanks to DNAinfo.com, we learned from the soon-to-be councilwoman how:

“Many African American/Caribbean residents expressed a genuine concern that as the Jewish community continues to grow, they would be pushed out by their Jewish landlords or by Jewish families looking to purchase homes,” Cumbo wrote in the 1,200-word letter, which was emailed to supporters and posted on her Facebook page.

“I respect and appreciate the Jewish community’s family values and unity that has led to strong political, economic and cultural gains. While I personally regard this level of tenacity, I also recognize that for others, the accomplishments of the Jewish community triggers feelings of resentment, and a sense that Jewish success is not also their success.”

She added that these sentiments among black Crown Heights residents “offer possible insight as to how young African American/Caribbean teens could conceivably commit a ‘hate crime’ against a community that they know very little about.”

Jewish success not their success?

This is the language of extortion. Blackmail. All we need is one final admission that she and her constituents don’t want it all, just enough to get their “beaks wet.” Toss in a few references to Al Sharpton’s diamond merchants and that completes the circle.

And you thought the face of racism and extortion was Simon Legree threatening to whip you if you did not hand over a fistful of silver dollars.

Come on, man.

Cumbo continues with lots of talk about history, and mutual understanding and how are we going to stop the violence and increase understanding and, my second-favorite: Why do we just care about it when it happens to Jews, and ignore black-on-black violence?

Only surpassed by these additional musings to her Facebook postings, where she identifies the real victims of the Crown Heights beat downs: Black people.

The recent November 26th article published in The Jewish Week, paints African American teens in a dangerous light, and could cause the vast majority of innocent young people of color to be seen as criminals in the Crown Heights community as a result of the actions of a dangerous small minority.

A classic script-flipping move: Please tell me you noticed how all of a sudden the victims are the predators. And the predators, victims.

And somehow, on some level, Jews are responsible for the violence against them. If not, why offer to meet to resolve the differences? When in fact the only real disagreement is whether black people should systematically and spontaneously — but not randomly — assault Jews in Brooklyn.

Now that Cumbo has re-established the natural order of life in Crown Heights, all that is left is a meeting or two to set the terms of surrender. And the amount of reparations.

It won’t take long.

Two race-obsessed celebrities work through their "issues" on the public stage.

Oprah, the self-anointed Queen of Everything Black, is back. This time we get a two-fer: She not only displays her personal pathologies, she also re-establishes her toxic-tribal bona fides among black people.

It’s a wicked mix: Damaging to herself and others.

During a recent BBC interview, Oprah pronounced that anyone who did not like President Obama was a racist. She also said “old” whites will have to die to end racism. To cap this pre-adolescent interview-rant, she adds that blacks are abused and disrespected the world over.

If these comments were just Oprah working through her “issues” again in a public place, then her remarks could be written off as typical comments from a racist. But Oprah is more than that, of course.

Oprah’s world view has no place for the decades of legal discrimination against non-blacks — affirmative action – that has victimized millions of people who have been passed over for promotions, or not even hired due to legal preferences for women and non-white minorities.

For decades black people have been given cuts-in-line in hiring and school admissions over non-black candidates who were more qualified.

We can discuss whether this is good or bad. Not whether it is true or false.

Oprah’s comments are just the latest in a long line of similar remarks from other celebrities that cultivate racial resentment: Racism is everywhere. Racism is permanent. You don’t have a chance if you are black. That is the mantra.

Then rap mogul Kanye West joined in, saying President Obama did not have the Jewish connections to become a successful president. The fantasies of persecution come from all quarters of the black chronic grievance industry, it seems.

This kind of institutional resentment represents the most profoundly powerful, false, and damaging ideas in the country today. Resentment is the most destructive emotion anyone can harbor. In my practice as a prison and private practice clinical psychologist, I have seen up close and personal the damage it does, and it is one of the top reasons people come for therapy.

Resentment stalls growth in anyone who is in bondage to it. Most people who sustain resentments reject personal responsibility for most all of their life choices and decisions. They believe they are given a pass on that pro-social, adult obligation.

Oprah did a great job in spreading – and reflecting – this resentment.

What can be the possible cause for someone with Oprah’s success to do such a thing? In a label: Toxic Shame. People who have suffered traumatic assaults as she did as a child – as we learn in her incessant autobiographies — being raped when she was age 9, among other gross psychological insults she endured, develop a sense of toxic shame that can dominate subconscious thinking for a lifetime.

At that early age, they absorb a pathological guilt for what happened to them, as if it was their fault. To a shamed person, their life is a mistake, regardless of the level of success, and they’re both fearful and angry about it.

Shamed people often develop eating disorders, most become very narcissistic, their religious preference is most often the narcissist-friendly “New Age” type, and they are prone to tantrums or rages.

They have a horrible time trying to establish a close and intimate personal relationship, and if they do, they become controlling, quarrelsome, and often, combative. In short, they don’t fall in love; they fall in sick. They’ll do most anything to keep from getting too close to someone, including sabotaging any positive bonding in the relationship. Many choose potential partners that are all but impossible to get close to. Others eventually choose to never get close to anyone – ever again.

When they explain what is tormenting them, real or imagined, at a particular moment they turn to pre-adolescent, “black and white” reasoning, the type that psychologists call, “splitting.” There are no exceptions in the minds of splitters, just like pre-adolescents. To them there are only absolutes. This compels them to often make blanket indictments against others even if there is no basis in fact.

The psychological defense of projection is also a common trait among the shamed population where someone blames others for what the blamer is guilty of. Oprah demonstrates this by saying blacks are abused the world over.

In Oprah’s world view, there is no room for personal responsibility for any of the pathologies that dominate black life in America today. Whether we are talking about crime, poverty, drug addiction, alcoholism, illegitimacy, HIV, irresponsible birthing, education, income; all these differences between blacks and non-blacks have one reason: White racism.

Then there are the America-wide assaults of blacks against non-blacks, especially against the most vulnerable non-black people such as the elderly and women. Someone should send her a copy of Colin Flaherty’s book, White Girl Bleed a Lot.

Her last psychological defense was her pronouncement that “old” whites must die to end racism. That’s called displacement, and with that primal declaration, she again regressed to pre-adolescence. The sadistic predator that brutalized her when she was a child just may be the real candidate for her wish of death on another. As a psychologist, I’d make serious book on it.

Oprah’s therapist or counselor, if she has one, might consider having her call when she feels the need to lash out at her pathology-based and distorted beliefs about non-blacks. Overall, she would do well for herself by canceling any future interviews regarding race and who should live and who should die.

This is not a prescription for public policy and debate. This is a prescription for serious and intensive therapy for someone who is in a lot more personal trouble that she sees so easily in others.
