What happens to a Christmas play when Joseph Stalin is more known than the biblical Joseph.

This “life imitates the People’s Cube” moment comes from St. Petersburg, Russia. What seems to be a spoof is a legitimate story via RIA Novosti, a Russian news agency. As a historical footnote, Nativity plays are a new concept in Russia, where Joseph Stalin is more known than the biblical Joseph, which occasionally causes Freudian slips like this one.

A St. Petersburg student mistakenly showed up dressed as Joseph Stalin to the Christmas play where he was supposed to play the biblical character of Joseph.

“Yesterday, my 12-year-old son participated in a school play. He told us ahead of time that he got the role of Joseph Stalin who is talking to some woman. It wasn’t a big surprise to us, as he has played parts in school plays before, and once he was even a watermelon,” wrote the student’s father Fyodor Gavrichenko on his Facebook page.

Gavrichenko said the whole family worked on making the costume – especially the grandmother, who sewed trouser stripes to the pants, found some old army boots, made a generalissimo mustache and a red folder with a big star.

They didn’t realize the mistake until the last moment because the play was in German as part of the boy’s foreign language class, and no one understood what the son’s lines meant. Apparently, the boy hadn’t been paying attention in class either. Instead of bringing the costume to school before the play, he showed the teacher its picture on his cell phone. The teacher thought it was a joke and said that the costume “rocks.”

The family sensed trouble when they saw their son’s classmate dressed as Magi. “Who are you?” asked the Magi. “I’m Mary’s husband… Joseph Stalin,” said the boy. His confidence shaken, the classmate went to the teacher: “Our Joseph turns out to be Stalin… Is that a good thing?” “What?” asked the teacher, as he pulled the curtain revealing the Nativity scene with Joseph and Mary. It was too late to change.

The plot thickened before the drama began. According to the father, Stalin’s outfit was a smash. The boy’s lines were accompanied by fits of hysterical laughter through the tears from other parents, some of whom reportedly fell off their chairs.

Those who can read the original Facebook post in Russian will notice that the father knows as little about the Nativity story as his son, confusing characters and their roles in the story. This is rather a norm in Russia, where erstwhile official atheism is only now being replaced by the official Orthodox Church. This St. Petersburg father couldn’t tell the shepherds from angels even if his son’s play weren’t in German. But at least he’s trying.

A new biography celebrates a racist and anti-Semite who was rejected by the civil rights movement he claimed to serve, and fled to Africa and into the arms of its anti-American dictators.

A project is underway to rehabilitate the self-exiled Sixties radical, anti-Semite and “black power” advocate Stokely Carmichael.

The opening salvo in this revisionist project of the Afro-centrist Marxist Left in academia is Stokely: A Life, by Peniel E. Joseph, which was recently published by BasicCivitas Books.

It is more infomercial than biography, calculated to transform its negligible subject into a towering figure of historic importance, and to whitewash the damage he did. Joseph’s central argument is that Carmichael was a “rock star” activist who inspired generations and who singlehandedly changed the course of American history.

Perversely, Joseph calls Carmichael a civil rights leader. If that fairly summarizes Carmichael’s work, he was a civil rights leader only in the bizarre modern sense that racial arsonist like Al Sharpton is a civil rights leader.

It is difficult to imagine an American civil rights leader making common cause with ruthless African dictators but that is what Carmichael did. He changed his name to Kwame Toure to honor two of them. In his self-imposed exile he was a courtier to brutal racist tyrants. He was a friend of Ugandan butcher Idi Amin, and rationalized away the relationship by reminding himself that Amin was anti-American and anti-Zionist. Carmichael even accepted Ugandan citizenship.

He was also a friend of Libyan dictator Muammar Qaddafi. Libya came closest to accomplishing Carmichael’s vision of a socialist state, according to Joseph.

It is difficult to image an American civil rights leader going abroad to help hostile powers, but this is what Carmichael did.

Carmichael visited Communist Cuba, giving aid and comfort to America’s enemies abroad. While there he called Abraham Lincoln a racist and helped Cuba’s propaganda effort against the United States. After spending three days with Fidel Castro he told reporters that the conversations he had with him were the “most educational, most interesting, and most enlightening of my public life.”

Carmichael praised the world’s most prolific mass murderer, Mao Zedong, as “a great Chinese leader, the greatest Chinese leader there is.” He palled around with Communist Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh and called for the U.S. to be defeated in Vietnam.

Not surprisingly, Carmichael was friends with Communist propagandist Howard Zinn and an acolyte of Nation of Islam demagogue Louis Farrakhan. Carmichael received political and financial support from Farrakhan’s organization.

It is impossible to imagine an American civil rights leader’s of the Martin Luther King Jr. era urging his followers to destroy their own country, but this is what Carmichael did. Revolutionary violence was the way to promote black power, in Carmichael’s view.

“It’s your town, if you want to burn it, burn it!” he said in a speech. “Don’t pray for power, don’t beg for power!” He called for an armed revolution capable of inflicting “maximum damage with a minimum of losses of black people.”

Although author Joseph strains to suggest Carmichael and Martin Luther King enjoyed a friendly relationship based on mutual respect and admiration, he leaves out his subject’s angry denunciations of King. As he urged blacks to seek “national liberation” from the rest of the U.S., Carmichael denounced King as an “Uncle Tom,” and rejected integration as a sellout to “white supremacy.”

Carmichael, who popularized the phrase black power, was a demagogue who believed that the ends justify the means. He was a leader who had no qualms about hurting other people on the long, blood-drenched road to utopia.

“When you talk of black power,” Carmichael said, “you talk of building a movement that will smash everything Western civilization has created.”

More moderate civil rights leaders at the time thought Carmichael was dangerous and possibly deranged. They urged that he be ostracized, treated as a “black Trotskyite.” Roy Wilkins of the NAACP said black power was a form of racism that could lead to “black death.” “It is a reverse Mississippi, a reverse Hitler, a reverse Ku Klux Klan.”

Professor Joseph, the founder and current director of the Center for the Study of Race and Democracy at Tufts University, is ideally suited for the task of performing plastic surgery on Carmichael’s legacy. He isn’t a serious historian but a professional apologist for black racism. A devotee of the cult known as “engaged scholarship” — academic argot for leftist propaganda disguised as scholarship — he forfeits the privilege of being taken seriously by serving as hero worshiper instead of honest chronicler.

This vein of so-called scholarship is widespread in the academy. For example, Syracuse University-based Imagining America, a consortium of more than 100 colleges and universities, is devoted to rewriting the American narrative along the lines of Communist Party USA member Howard Zinn’s bestselling book-length fiction, A People’s History of the United States. The professor-propagandist boasts at his online home that he is “the founder of a growing subfield in American History and Africana Studies that he has characterized as ‘Black Power Studies’ which is actively rewriting postwar American and African American History as well as related interdisciplinary fields of Africana Studies, law and society, sociology, political science, Women’s and Ethnic Studies, philosophy, anthropology, literary studies, and American Studies to name a few.” [italics added]

Not surprisingly, the book itself is fluff more appropriate to the pages of Rolling Stone or People magazine. It papers over or downplays Carmichael’s many egregious flaws.

In reality, Carmichael was not heroic. He was a paranoid, racist, who was rejected by the civil rights movement he claimed to serve. He was widely hated across America — and distrusted by actual civil rights leaders — for his virulently anti-American pronouncements and his calls for revolutionary violence to be used to destroy both the United States and all of Western civilization.

His hatred of America was profound. The United States, he said, was “the most disgusting country in the world.” The Trinidadian-born agitator urged that black power be used not only to cripple America, his adopted homeland, but also to bring down the civilized world.

Joseph papers over Carmichael’s worst attributes.

He argues that Carmichael’s opposition to the existence of the State of Israel was misinterpreted as anti-Semitism. The fact that the activist praised Adolf Hitler as a “genius” did not make Carmichael a Jew-hater because he tacked on the proviso that what the German dictator did was “wrong” and “evil.”

He called Israel a proxy for U.S. imperialism and sided with the Palestinians over the Jewish state. He equated Zionism with racism before the United Nations followed suit in 1975.

But Joseph leaves out Carmichael’s chilling statement in 1967 that “The only good Zionist is a dead Zionist.” and launched the revival of overt anti-Semitism in the black left and eventually in the left generally.

Carmichael flirted with nonviolence for a time. He was elected chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee or SNCC (pronounced snick) defeating now Congressman John Lewis (D-Ga.), an integrationist, for the position. As Joseph notes in a moment of rare candor, the decline of SNCC can be traced directly to Carmichael taking the group over in 1966, and turning his back on King’s legacy.

In a major unforced error, Joseph accuses the FBI of Red-baiting Carmichael. The agency “routinely investigated wild rumors and false sightings that connected the SNCC chairman to the Communist Party and related organizations,” Joseph writes.

But elsewhere in the book, the author describes Carmichael’s ties to Communist Party USA officials and notes that he attended Young Communist League meetings. So they weren’t “wild rumors and false sightings” at all.

Carmichael mocked calls for “integration,” saying they amounted to “a subterfuge for the maintenance of white supremacy.” Upon taking the reins at SNCC, he fired all white staff members and badmouthed whites who had backed the cause previously.

Around that time he publicly spoke of the importance of “offing the pigs” and “killing the honkies.” He urged the dynamiting of businesses and expressed hope that black U.S. soldiers serving in Vietnam would one day come home and “kill in the streets” of America. He encouraged blacks to riot in order to give white America “a little taste of chaos” and vowed that “[t]he Negro [was] going to take what he deserves from the white man.”

During his time as leader, or “prime minister” of the Black Panther Party, he urged the group to sever all its alliances with whites. Joseph ignores the fact that he failed and “this tactical disagreement led to Carmichael’s expulsion from the party and a ritual beating by his former BPP comrades.”He died at the age of 57 of prostate cancer that he accused the U.S. government of giving to him. That cancer “was given to me by forces of American imperialism and others who conspired with them,” he claimed.

But by the time of his passing in 1998, Carmichael was largely forgotten. He marginalized himself by emigrating to Africa and pursuing a political agenda that few cared about.

Even the New York Times, the agenda-setting, politically correct house organ of American progressivism, thought of Carmichael as a relative nobody when he died.

The newspaper published an unflattering obituary that essentially deemed the life’s work of Carmichael, who upon moving to Africa rechristened himself Kwame Ture, a waste of time that in the end had little impact:

“Mr. Ture, who changed his name in 1978 to honor Kwame Nkrumah and Ahmed Sekou Toure, two African dictators who had befriended him, spent 30 years in Guinea, calling himself a revolutionary and advocating a Pan-African ideology that evoked few resonances in the United States, or, for that matter, Africa.”

Yet Joseph portrays Carmichael as a giant of the civil rights movement who changed the course of history. “Carmichael’s bold antiwar rhetoric provided the intellectual and political contours for whites to engage in a global assault against American imperialism,” Joseph swoons.

Like a modern-day Obama zombie, the author characterizes Carmichael as courageous, intelligent, physically attractive, charismatic, and in possession of a robust sense of humor. It is reminiscent of the cartoonishly hagiographic treatment Kim Jong-un might receive in the North Korea press.

Joseph calls Carmichael “a rock star whose political speeches proved no less popular than a musical performance,” and likens him to John the Baptist.

Carmichael was not only “the most important black radical activist of his generation,” but also “the most effective and controversial activist of his generation,” Joseph opines, elevating his subject over Martin Luther King Jr. and the leaders of the various influential countercultural and political movements of the 1960s and 70s.

He played a “central role in reshaping domestic race relations and reimagining American democracy,” Joseph writes breathlessly.

“Through speeches, books, and interviews, Carmichael transformed the discourse on race, war, and democracy … [and] shaped the contours of civil rights and Black Power activism through participation in sit-ins, Freedom Rides, independent political organizing, and antiwar protests.”

Joseph’s comrades in the academy are fawning over the book, only too happy to help push this new narrative on an unsuspecting public.

Pseudo-intellectual race-baiter Michael Eric Dyson of Georgetown University is part of this push to craft Carmichael into a founding father of a new America. The MSNBC talking head calls the book “a magisterial biography of one of the most important figures in the history of the black freedom struggle in America.”

Following the Left’s playbook, which requires characterizing evil men of the Left not as evil but as complex and difficult to understand, Dyson said if Martin Luther King “was the King of civil disobedience, then Carmichael was the Prince of black revolution, and Stokely is the brilliant chronicle of his complicated and remarkable reign during tempestuous times.” Dyson lays it on thick, hailing Joseph’s competent but dull prose as the product of a “poetic pen.”

Al Sharpton’s Marxist political adviser, Cornel West, who is better known for palling around with Hugo Chavez and acting in two Matrix sequels, than for his so-called scholarship, predictably calls Stokely a “marvelous book.”

The book highlights “Carmichael’s profound love affair with Black people [which] made him one of the great revolutionary figures of the twentieth century,” says West, currently with Union Theological Seminary. West has also defended Farrakhan’s racism and anti-Semitism as reflecting a profound love of black people.

His reference to Carmichael’s “love affair” with blacks also brings to mind sociopathic tee shirt icon Che Guevara’s creepy aphorism about true revolutionaries being “guided by a great feeling of love.” (Carmichael identified with Guevara, who spoke of launching a nuclear attack against New York City, and referred to him as one of his personal heroes.)

The academic embrace of this anti-American, anti-Semitic race-hater is just another sign of how the left has destroyed a great institution and turned it into a propaganda mill.

Joseph, who has co-edited a book with CNES director Susan Slyomovics, is considered a pioneer in the field of Middle East women’s studies, accolades which—as is, sadly, often the case—translates into apologetics for the oppression of Middle Eastern women.

Joseph announced she was perturbed about the title of her lecture; she couldn’t decide whether “Arab” was an appropriate term to use for identification purposes. Yet, she contradicted herself (and followed the Arabist practice of her discipline) by referring to the Middle East exclusively as the “Arab world” and by questioning the identities of Jews, Assyrians, Chaldeans, and other distinctive, regional minorities. She wondered why these groups perceive themselves as separate from Arabs when the answer is readily apparent both in the distinctive histories of theses peoples and in their persecution at the hands of Arab Muslim majorities. The very term “Arab”—often used arbitrarily to describe anything Middle Eastern—is loaded with a perilous and extreme nationalism that has made ethnic minorities such as Mizrahi Jews and Assyrians victims of the majority.

Joseph questioned, and at times denounced, studies examining the status quo of women in the Middle East. She argued that the representation of Arab women as subjects is a “problematic category and necessary one,” and that there is serious fault with characterizations—particularly in Western research and media—of Arab women as the victims of patriarchy, culture, politics, and religion. Instead, Joseph contended, notions of self are changing and malleable.

Predictably for contemporary Middle East studies, Joseph paid tribute to Edward Said’s deeply flawed book Orientalism, which helps explain her rejection of any implied Western superiority regarding women’s rights. In asserting that Westerners shouldn’t assume women in the Middle East wish to imitate secular, Westernized women, she encapsulated the ideology widespread on college campuses: multiculturalism, a form of cultural relativism that denies the ability to judge non-Western cultures on their merits, and which, in practice, judges all non-Western cultures as superior. She made no reference to universal human rights or to the possible reasons for rising Arab immigration to secular European nations and to North America.

Joseph asserted that Arab women are the “most relationship-driven” of any with which she has worked. She described Americans, in contrast, as less “relationship-driven” and American women as having fewer expectations than their Arab counterparts. Joseph offered no factual evidence for either of these preposterous claims. Given the grave circumstances under which many Arab women live, one would think it is they who are forced to have fewer expectations and not, as Joseph contended, Western women.

Incredibly, Joseph theorized that Arab women want to be claimed by men, and therefore have no objection to being subjects of a patriarchal and theocratic society in which their individual rights are abridged. The audience, which appeared to consist mostly of Center for Near Eastern Studies and Women’s Studies faculty, nodded their heads in agreement with this troubling statement. In fact, those gathered reacted favorably to the lecture overall and asked no challenging questions of the speaker. Overwhelming (if understated) evidence of the systematic and institutionalized abuse of Middle Eastern women didn’t seem to factor into the equation.

In many regions of the Middle East, the basic standing of women and the attitude of men towards them are pre-modern. Were this not so, there would be no honor killings, female genital mutilation, child marriage, or legitimized wife-beating. Moreover, the West should consider the disturbing social implications for its societies as these barbaric customs are imported through Muslim immigration.

If I may end on a personal note: As a woman of Middle Eastern origin, the situation of women in the Middle East has always fascinated and troubled me. Although I come from a very traditional Middle Eastern family—albeit Jewish—the women in my family have always been empowered and independent. Therefore, I find it extremely difficult to come to terms with the theory that Middle Eastern women are a different breed who welcome abuse for some twisted concept of maintaining a “relationship-driven” society.

If one believes, as I do, in fundamental human rights, there are moral principles that define our basic freedoms. Middle Eastern women’s rights activists such as Shirin Ebadi and Ayaan Hirsi Ali do not excuse the misogynistic and theocratic elements in their native countries. Instead, they demand freedom, even in the face of their abusers and of Western apologists.

Unfortunately, Joseph’s lecture belongs in the latter category, demonstrating yet again that Middle Eastern women who seek intellectual and moral support from Western professors of Middle East studies will come away disappointed.

What would Jesus do about open borders? Leftist immigration activists claim to know.

The old Religious Left has long championed virtual open borders and slammed national sovereignty as idolatrous. Now the new Evangelical Left is chiming in with its own sentimentalization of illegal immigration, identifying Jesus Christ Himself as an illegal immigrant.

“We are exiles who follow an alien, undocumented, migrant Messiah,” insisted Debra Dean Murphy, a religion professor at United Methodist affiliated West Virginia Wesleyan College. Her recent column was carried by Jim Wallis’ Sojourners and illustrates the merging thought of old Religious Left and new Evangelical Left. Murphy cited Edgardo Colón-Emeric, director of Hispanic Studies at Duke University’s Divinity School in North Carolina: “Jesus did not have a valid birth certificate. Mother’s name: Mary; Father’s name: unknown. In fact, Jesus had no papers in his name, no title deed, no rental contract. Nothing. ‘Foxes have dens, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to rest his head.’” She further quoted Colón-Emeric: “Christians who do not recognize Jesus in the illegal do not know Jesus.”

Probably neither Jesus nor any other ancient Jew, or anybody else in the ancient world, had birth certificates. Jesus did have a legal father, Joseph. The Nativity Story famously reports that Jesus’ family lawfully returned to Bethlehem, the place of Joseph’s birth, to comply with a census. Jesus came from a lawful, Torah following Jewish family that seems to have lived in the same Nazareth except for their sojourn in Egypt to escape King Herod. There is no reason to think Joseph and Mary, with the infant Jesus, were in Egypt illegally. Nor did they remain there as refugees beyond necessity, after which they returned home. So it’s not clear how Jesus could be an “alien, undocumented, migrant Messiah,” except as the contrived icon for Religious and Evangelical Left immigration activists.

All Christians would readily agree that illegal aliens, with all humanity, bear God’s image and merit lawful and decent treatment. But humanitarianism does not necessarily equal anarchically and endlessly open borders nor an automatic amnesty for all who cross the border illegally, much less the glorification of illegal immigration. The Religious and Evangelical Left sometimes practice a form of political antinomianism, asserting that rules are unimportant and only politically correct sentiments and intentions bring salvation.

Christian ethics, rooted in Jewish teaching, have for millennia taught lawful orderliness and warned against social anarchy. With Jews, Christians have traditionally understood their faith in God entailed reasonable obedience to civil authorities, except in the most egregious and idolatrous interference with faithfulness to God. But the Religious and Evangelical Left have decided that civil law should not really matter in cases of immigration. “The dominant narrative–the one about illegality, rule of law, blah, blah, blah–is persuasive because it provokes and exploits the one emotion that has driven American politics since 9/11: fear,” Professor Murphy opined. “We’re told by critics and commentators that Americans have never been so angry, that our public discourse has never been this strident and dangerously uncivil–all the red-faced name-calling, the ugly race-baiting, the shrill, snarky meanness.” Do expectations of border security and immigration law enforcement necessarily equal “shrill, snarky meanness?” For the Religious and Evangelical Left, evidently so.

In contrast, recently I attended a ceremony at the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. honoring “righteous gentiles” from the Netherlands who courageously hid Jews and other potential victims of Nazis in their church during the German occupation. The church sexton, Hendrik Pleijsier-van Burden, along with his wife Neeltje Alida, with the pastors and others in the church, were guided by their Christian faith to protect Jews, Dutch resistance fighters and German Army deserters, all of whom faced likely execution if captured. In such an extremity, Christian ethics certainly affirms resistance against a genocidal occupying power. As a child, my own native northern Virginia was filled with thousands of new Vietnamese immigrants who fled communist occupation after Saigon’s 1975 collapse. President Ford had resettled 130,000 Vietnamese who had served the U.S. during the war and who had escaped newly reunified and communist Vietnam, where they faced death or internment. A church in my neighborhood adopted a Vietnamese family. Church and state rightly welcomed refugees who had sided with America and who needed protection from a murderous enemy.

Strangely, the Religious and Evangelical Left give little specific attention to today’s political and religious refugees who flee communist and Islamist regimes. The implied disapproval of such anti-Western governments does not comport with the Religious and Evangelical Left narrative that the U.S. is the world’s most oppressive power and responsible for most political and economic suffering. For the Religious and Evangelical Left, the U.S. is the original cause for global poverty and therefore is obligated to offer automatic sanctuary to any and all who want to move here, legally or illegally.

Traditionally across the centuries, immigrants to America have seen their opportunity as a privilege. Undoubtedly many still do. But the religious U. S. champions of virtual open borders insist that immigration is not a privilege but an entitlement that the U.S. universally owes the world. According to Professor Murphy, any resistance to unlimited immigration just illustrates “Americans’ deep-seated xenophobia,” which was “carefully cultivated since the 9/11 terrorist attacks,” and “crucial in rallying the country to support two insupportable wars.” Darkly, Murphy fears that a “phrase formerly associated with interrogators of the Third Reich–‘let me see your papers’–will now enter the lexicon of law enforcement in Arizona,” thanks to its new immigration law. “Jesus–in the guise of the brown-skinned ‘other’–will be asked for documentation he doesn’t have.”

Adding to this theme of deifying illegal immigration, Professor Colón-Emeric at Duke has preached that “The Church is a van full of illegals crossing the border to travel to the true north, up, the kingdom of God, because as [Saint} Paul says, “our citizenship is in heaven.” Jews and Christians, in the tradition of Abraham, do understand their faith as a pilgrim journey through a strange land. But probably neither the Patriarch nor St. Paul would equate the quest for salvation with celebrating the willful violation of immigration law.

The affront that "equal access" poses to Muslims.

Last week saw an upsurge in Palestinian riots and attacks against Israeli vehicles in Gaza and the West Bank. What crime did Israel commit to invite the wave of violence? Israel’s government simply announced that it intended to honor the country’s heritage by including the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron, and Rachel’s Tomb in Bethlehem in a list of Israeli national “heritage” sites.

The violence-fueled Palestinian reaction may seem entirely disproportionate to Israel’s offense. But a look at the historical background shows that it is not without grim precedent.

For several decades, Palestinians have been attacking Jewish worshipers at the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, the Tomb of Rachel near Bethlehem, and the Tomb of Patriarchs and Matriarchs, Machpelah, in Hebron. After the Oslo and Hebron Agreements in the 1990′s, attacks intensified.

To protect visitors to Rachel’s Tomb, a fortified building was built around the tiny, 19th century building that had been built over the tomb. That wasn’t enough, since getting to the building from the closest Israeli checkpoint, a few hundred meters away, exposed Jews to sniper fire and bombs from adjacent buildings along the road. A new road was built, therefore, surrounded by high cement walls.

Palestinian riots against the rights of Jews to visit holy and historic sites are nothing new. In Jericho and Gaza, ancient Jewish synagogues from the Talmudic period have been destroyed and are off limits to Jews.

In Shechem, Nablus , the site of Joseph’s Tomb, was attacked by Palestinian mobs in 2000, fire-bombed and destroyed. A wounded Israeli soldier inside bled to death while Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and his Defense Minister, Shaul Mofaz, negotiated with the Palestinian Authority.

On the Temple Mount , the Palestinians have been systematically destroying Jewish artifacts and antiquities from the Second Temple period.

Why is attacking and destroying Jewish heritage sites so popular among Palestinians?

Arabs claim their own heritage sites. Their claims go back about 1,300 years, when the Al-Aksa mosque and golden Dome of the Rock were built on the Temple Mount. These buildings exist today under Muslim authority (Wakf); Jews are prohibited by Israeli police from praying, carrying holy books, or ritual objects on the Temple Mount, in deference to Muslim restrictions.

During the Muslim occupation of Israel, with the exception of about two centuries of Christian Crusader occupation, various public buildings, palaces, mosques and bridges were built. Remains of Crusader fortresses are popular tourist sites, along with Nabatean (pagan) sites in the Negev, many of which are UNESCO-designated.

All are part of the history and heritage of the Land of Israel. Except for their buildings on the Temple Mount, however, Muslims do not consider the Land of Israel, Judea and Samaria, Palestine, sacred in any way. During most of the Muslim occupation, these sites were neglected because they held little significance. The main focus, for Muslims, was Mecca and Medina, in Saudi Arabia. Muslims do not make aliyah to Palestine.

Christians and Muslims venerated holy sites in the Land of Israel, Palestine, but after visiting, or conquering, they went home. Their heritage was local, tribal, and familial. The Land of Israel was not part of their heritage. It was a heritage for Jews.

This explains why Palestinians are opposed to the designation of Jewish heritage sites. If it is important to Jews, what does that mean for Muslims? Indeed, what is their heritage?

Heritage is a legacy that connects generations; it’s not politics, but history. For Palestinians, however, the two are entangled – which chokes off rationality.

It’s not the Muslim significance of historical sites that inspires Palestinian riots; it’s that Jews claim it at all. Equal access to historical and holy sites is considered an affront by Muslims, as it questions their exclusivity and authenticity.

Under Muslim rule, for example, Jews were denied entrance to Machpelah, since, if Muslims don’t have exclusive control of the site, then no one else should, or will. Any attachment of Jews diminishes that of Muslims.

This deadly Arab zero-sum game is exacerbated by President Obama, whose opposition to the right of Jews to live beyond the 1949 Armistice Lines fueled Palestinian riots in eastern Jerusalem. Recently, State Department spokesman Mark Toner said “the administration viewed Israel ‘s move as provocative and unhelpful.” He did not deplore Palestinian riots.

If you agree with President Obama and Mark Toner, no need to do anything. If you disagree, however, let your voices be heard. Silence is acquiescence.
