And it continues all the time.

At the end of yet another brutal week where Israelis were killed while praying, the lessons of Zionist hero Ze’ev Jabotinsky are relevant, as before there was a Jewish State he wrote:

It is very, very sad that Jews are compelled to learn to shoot. But we are compelled and it is useless to argue against the compulsion of historic reality. That compulsion says you may be well educated, you may learn to plow the land and to build houses, you may speak Hebrew… but if you do not at the same time know how to shoot there is no hope. That is the lesson of the reality of our time and that is the prospect for the lifetime of our children.

What Jabotinsky said in the 1930’s in Europe remains true today. So, too do the words of his former secretary, Ben-Zion Netanyahu, the Prime Minister of Israel’s father who said in 2009: “The Holocaust didn’t end. It continues all the time.” The brutal images of Jews being killed at prayer this week in Jerusalem could have come from any other tragedy in Jewish history.

Ze’ev Jabotinsky noted,

Where it is a question of war you do not stand and ask questions as to what is “better,” whether to shoot or not to shoot. The only permissible question in such circumstances is on the contrary “what is worse” to let yourself be killed or enslaved without any resistance or to undertake resistance with all its horrible questions. For there is no “better” at all. Everything connected with war is bad, and cannot be “good.” When you shoot at enemy soldiers do not lie to yourself or persuade yourself that you are shooting at “guilty” ones. If you start calculating with what is “better” the calculation is very simple; if you want to be good let yourself be killed and renounce everything you would like to defend: home, country, freedom, hope. The blackest of all characteristics is the tradition of the cheapness of Jewish blood.

In the legendary essay “Ethics of the Iron Wall,” Jabotinsky, the father of the Likud Party wrote:

Human society is based on reciprocity. If you remove reciprocity, justice becomes a lie. A person walking somewhere on a street has the right to live only because and only to the extent that he acknowledges my right to live. But, if he wishes to kill me, to my mind he forfeits his right to exist – and this also applies to nations. Otherwise, the world would become a racing area for vicious predators, where not only the weakest would be devoured, but the best.

Danny Danon, a Likud Knesset Member said recently that “Israel must flex muscle to crush terrorists,” and this PR Agency owner joins all decent people in mourning the deaths of innocents in Jerusalem, Israel. Terrorism must be fought and challenged.

Immediate measures Israel should take to stop the Islamic jihad against the Jewish people.

Originally published by the Jerusalem Post.

What we are seeing in Jerusalem today is not simply Palestinian terrorism. It is Islamic jihad. No one likes to admit it. The television reporters insist that this is the worst possible scenario because there is no way to placate it.

There is no way to reason with it.

So what else is new? The horrible truth is that all of the anti-Jewish slaughters perpetrated by our Arab neighbors have been motivated to greater or lesser degrees by Islamic Jew-hatred. The only difference between the past hundred years and now is that today our appeasement-oriented elite is finding it harder to pretend away the obvious fact that we cannot placate our enemies.

No “provocation” by Jews drove two Jerusalem Arabs to pick up meat cleavers and a rifle and slaughter rabbis in worship like sheep and then mutilate their bodies.

No “frustration” with a “lack of progress” in the “peace process,” can motivate people to run over Jewish babies or attempt to assassinate a Jewish civil rights activist.

The reason that these terrorists have decided to kill Jews is that they take offense at the fact that in Israel, Jews are free. They take offense because all their lives they have been taught that Jews should live at their mercy, or die by their sword.

They do so because they believe, as former Jordanian MP Ya’qub Qarash said on Palestinian television last week, that Christians and Muslims should work together to forbid the presence of Jews in “Palestine” and guarantee that “not a single Jew will remain in Jerusalem.”

Our neighbors are taught that Muhammad, the founder of Islam, signed the treaty of Hudaybiyah in 628 as a ploy to buy time during which he would change the balance of power between his army and the Jews of Kuraish. And 10 years later, once his army gained the upper hand, he annihilated the Jews.

Throughout the 130-year history of modern Zionism, Islamic Jew-hatred has been restrained by two forces: the desire of many Arabs to live at peace with their Jewish neighbors; and the ability of Israeli authorities and before them, British authorities, to deter the local Arab Muslims from attacking.

The monopoly on Arab Muslim leadership has always belonged to the intolerant bigots. Support for coexistence has always been the choice of individuals.

Haj Amin el-Husseini’s first act as the founder of the Palestinian Arab identity was to translate The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and serialize them in the local press.

During the Arab jihad of 1936-1939, Husseini’s gangs of murderers killed more Arabs than the British did. He targeted those who sought peaceful coexistence with the Jews.

His successor Yasser Arafat followed his example.

During the 1988-1991 Palestinian uprising, the PLO killed more Palestinians than the IDF did. Like Husseini, Arafat targeted Palestinians who worked with Israel.

Since Israel imprudently embraced Arafat and the PLO in 1993 and permitted them to govern the Palestinians in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, and exert direct influence and coercive power over the Arabs of Jerusalem, the Palestinian Authority’s governing institutions have used all the tools at their disposal to silence those who support peaceful coexistence with Israel, and indoctrinate the general public in Islamic and racial Jew-hatred.

Much has been made of the recent spike in incitement of violence by Palestinian leaders led by Arafat’s successor Mahmoud Abbas. But the flames Abbas and his comrades are throwing would not cause such conflagrations if they hadn’t already indoctrinated their audience to desire the destruction of the Jews.

You cannot solicit murder among those who haven’t been taught that committing murder is an act of heroism.

Today Israel must take swift, effective action to stop the slaughter. The damage that has been done to the psyches of the Arabs of Jerusalem and their brethren in Judea, Samaria and Gaza, cannot be repaired in a timeline relevant to the task of preventing the next massacre.

This means that for the time being, on the tactical level, Israel’s only play is strengthening its deterrence.

Israel faces two major constraints in meeting this challenge.

First, the European Union and the Obama administration, as well as the US foreign policy elite, are obsessively committed to a policy of empowering the Palestinians against Israel.

The Spanish parliament’s decision to go ahead with its planned vote to recognize the “State of Palestine,” just hours after the massacre at the Bnei Torah Kehillat Yaakov synagogue in Jerusalem’s Har Nof neighborhood shows that the EU’s dedication to strengthening the Palestinians against Israel is entirely unrelated to events on the ground.

They don’t care who the Palestinians are or what they do. For their own reasons they have made supporting the Palestinians at Israel’s expense their top foreign policy priority.

Similarly, US President Barack Obama couldn’t contain his compulsion to pressure Israel even in his statement condemning the massacre. Even there, Obama called on Israelis and Palestinians equally to restrain themselves.

Obama’s unabated hostility toward Israel was brought to bear on Tuesday afternoon when the State Department restated its rejection of Jewish property rights in Jerusalem and its desire to see the homes of terrorist murderers left intact for the welfare of their terror-supporting families.

On Tuesday, Israel’s social media outlets were filled with angry rebukes of Western media outlets from CNN to MSNBC to CBS, to the BBC. All these networks, and many others, did everything in their power to explain away the synagogue slaughter as just another instance of a cycle of violence. That is, they all sought to frame the discussion in a way that would lead their viewers to the conclusion that the slaughter of praying rabbis was justified.

While appalling, the coverage was not the least surprising. The Western elite media’s devotion to their false narrative of Israeli culpability for all the problems in the region is absolute. Networks would rather wreck their professional reputations than tell the truth.

Together with the EU, the American policy elite and the Obama administration, the media place Israel’s leaders in a bind. Every step they take to defend the country and protect the rights of Jews meets with automatic and libelous condemnation.

The other impediment Israel faces in deterring anti-Jewish violence against its citizenry is its own weakness. Since the inception of the phony peace process, Israel has continuously rewarded the Palestinians for their murderous violence against its citizenry.

From Israel’s transfer of control over all the Palestinian population centers in Judea and Samaria, to its forcible expulsion of its own people from Gaza, to its repeated releases of terrorists from prison, to its continued transfer of hundreds of millions of shekels in tax revenues to the PA, Israel has showed the Palestinians at every turn that far from being punished for murdering Jews, they will be rewarded for doing so.

Given the US and European support for the Palestinians, Israeli declarations that there will be no future releases of terrorists have no credibility. If terrorists aren’t killed on the spot, they can assume that they will eventually be released; if not in exchange for an Israeli hostage, Israel will release them in an attempt to placate the White House.

But even with these constraints on its actions, Israel can take steps to deter its hate-filled enemies from attacking.

Since the current campaign of murder is being carried out by terrorists largely acting on their own accord, the measures Israel adopts to stop the attacks should be directed primarily against individual terrorists. As for action against the PA, it needs to be credible, consistent and directed to where it will hurt Palestinian leaders the most: their wallets.

With regard to the individual terrorists, the government has made much of its intention to destroy the homes of terrorists. While it sounds good, there is limited evidence of the effectiveness of this punitive measure, which is a relic of the British Mandate.

Rather than destroy their homes, Israel should adopt the US anti-narcotics policy of asset seizure.

All assets directly or indirectly tied to terrorists, including their homes and any other structure where they planned their crimes, and all remittances to them, should be seized and transferred to their victims, to do with what they will.

If Israel hands over the homes of the synagogue butchers to the 24 orphans of Rabbi Moshe Twersky, Rabbi Kalman Levine, Rabbi Aryeh Kupinsky and Rabbi Avraham Goldberg, not only will justice be served. The children’s inheritance of the homes of their fathers’ killers will send a clear and demoralizing message to other would-be killers.

Not only will their atrocities fail to remove the Jews from Israel. Every terrorist will contribute to the Zionist project by donating his home to the Jewish settlement enterprise.

Just as Israel has repeatedly buckled under US pressure to release terrorists from jail, so it has bowed to US pressure to continue to fund the PA by transferring the tax revenues it collects on goods imported to the PA.

Assuming that the government is too weak to stand up to the Americans, at a minimum it can see that the money is properly used.

To that end, the Knesset should pass a law permitting Israeli terror victims to sue the PA for actual and punitive damages in Israel courts. The sums awarded to the victims should be taken from the tax revenues Israel collects for the PA. The law should apply retroactively to all victims of Palestinian terror carried out since the establishment of the PA in May 1994.

Not only should the law permit Israeli terror victims to sue the PA. It should dictate actions the Justice Ministry must take to assist them in bringing suit.

Israel should also revoke citizenship and residency rights not only from terrorists themselves, but from those who enjoy citizenship and residency rights by dint of their relationship with the terrorists.

Wives who received Israeli residency or citizenship rights though marriage to terrorists should have their rights revoked, as should the children of the terrorists.

Since Tuesday’s massacre, aside from Abbas’s phony condemnation, the Palestinian leadership and public from Fatah to Hamas have been unanimous in their praise for the atrocity.

Today Israel is powerless to influence the hearts of our Arab neighbors. But we can influence their minds. We can deter them from attacking us.

The actions set forth above: asset seizure, revenue seizure and citizenship/residency abrogation for terrorists and their dependents are steps that Israel can take today, despite the hostile international climate.

If the government and Knesset adopt these measures, they will rectify some of the damage Israel has inflicted on itself by showing the Palestinians over two decades that they will be rewarded for their aggression.

If our leaders fail to take these or similar actions, and suffice with complaining about incitement, their condemnations of the murder of Jews will ring as hollow as those sounded by the BBC, Obama and Abbas.

This week’s terror attack in a Jerusalem synagogue evoked a 300-word unsigned editorial from the New York Times.

Seemingly, this was a straightforward case: two terrorists with a gun, axes, and knives entered the synagogue and proceeded to butcher peaceful, unarmed worshippers. But for the Times, nothing involving Israel is straightforward.

Yes, the Times called the attack a “bloody rampage” and said Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas “has a duty to make the moral case that such brutality and inhumanity can only bring shame upon the Palestinian people” (which, by the way, he’s never going to do).

But the Times also called the attack

a tragedy for all Israelis and Palestinians. The two communities appeared increasingly locked in a cycle of hatred and hopelessness, where chances for stability, much less permanent peace, seem nearly impossible.

… it also is part of an alarming wave of violence fueled by a dispute over a holy site in the Old City known to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary and to Jews as the Temple Mount.

The drift of that could not be clearer: both sides are at fault, both evincing “hatred” and “violence” that make peace “nearly impossible.”

But is that really true?

The attack on the synagogue immediately killed four Jews, three of them rabbis; a fifth person—an Israeli Druze policeman who fought the terrorists—died the following day.

In addition to those five, six other people have been killed by Palestinian terror since October 22: a three-month-old Israeli girl and an Ecuadorian woman in a car-ramming attack, an Israeli Druze border patrolman and a 17-year-old Israeli youth in another car-ramming attack, an off-duty Israeli soldier in a stabbing attack, and an Israeli woman in a car-ramming/stabbing attack.

Another Israeli, Rabbi Yehuda Glick, survived an attempt to shoot him to death by a Palestinian terrorist. And three other soldiers were injured in another car-ramming incident that now also turns out to have been a terror attack.

Now, in those five weeks, how many Palestinians have been killed or injured in terror attacks? The answer, of course, is none. The only Palestinians killed in the “conflict” have been those shot by Israeli policemen or soldiers during or after attacks.

By this standard, the United States and ISIS have been “locked in a cycle of hatred” and violence. Innocent Americans have been killed by ISIS; ISIS members have been killed in U.S. air strikes. It’s the same thing, isn’t it?

If you go back to last July 2, you’ll find a brutal murder by three Israelis of a 16-year-old Palestinian boy named Muhammad Abu Khdeir (supposed “revenge” for the earlier killing of three Israeli youths by Hamas members). The Israeli perpetrators of that crime, which shocked and horrified the whole country, are now in jail awaiting trial. The leader of the three was an individual so aberrant that he had earlier threatened to murder his one-month-old daughter.

Anyone who keeps track at all of this “conflict” knows the situation is very different on the Palestinian side, where murderers of Israelis—any Israelis—are systematically honored, glorified, and if possible, remunerated.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, behind the haze of disinformation and distortions of the New York Times and other big media, a sad but heartwarming event occurred in Israel.

Zidan Sayif, the 30-year-old Druze policeman who along with two other policemen fought the synagogue terrorists on Tuesday, paid for doing so with his life, and is survived by a wife and five-month-old daughter, was buried in the Druze village of Yanuh-Jat in northern Israel. The thousands in attendance included Druze notables and the Israeli president, internal security minister, police commissioner, and other officials.

And they also included hundreds of ultra-Orthodox Israeli Jews. The synagogue attacked on Tuesday was ultra-Orthodox. Although ultra-Orthodox Jews tend to be insular, they came out in appreciation of Zidan Sayif’s heroism as he and his fellow officers prevented what could have been a much larger massacre.

At the funeral, ultra-Orthodox Member of Knesset Eli Yishai said:

We all weep alongside the family. We are here to pay our last respects to a great hero who gave his life. . . . Your memory is forever engraved in our hearts.

Risha Segal, an ultra-Orthodox Jerusalem resident, had earlier posted online:

We are calling for widespread solidarity throughout Israel, with an emphasis on gratitude. We will not be ungrateful and will show our thanks for those who sacrificed their lives for us. This is one of the most important principles in Judaism.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu called Sayif’s father on Wednesday and said:

Your son’s bravery prevented many victims. On behalf of the citizens of Israel I want to offer my condolences for his death while fulfilling his duty. It is precisely at this time that you must raise your heads high with pride and know that the death of your son was not in vain. Thanks to him many citizens can now continue their lives.

And Sheikh Moafaq Tarif, spiritual leader of the Israeli Druze community, had this to say at the funeral:

The entire Druze community lowers its head together with the families of the victims of the terrible massacre in Jerusalem, and we hope for safer, quieter days ahead. We must take our covenant of blood and turn it into a covenant of life. We are a peace-seeking people, and our sons serve this state and the entire public, and we will continue to do so.

The Palestinian Arabs of the West Bank and Gaza, too, could live peacefully with the Jews of Israel and other peace-loving peoples of the Middle East. They could work out their differences with Israel without ramming, shooting, hacking, and stabbing men, women, and children. Realizing that, though, seems beyond the ken of the New York Times.

Where was the media sympathy for immigrant children when Castro slaughtered them at sea?

No ethnic group in the U.S. matches Cuban-Americans in their rejection of the Democratic Party. This might explain why most of you, amigos, have probably never heard of this atrocity against “Hispanics” attempting to enter the U.S. This week marks the 20th anniversary of the Communist massacre.

You know it’s bad (or good, depending on your viewpoint) when a mainstream media luminary himself admits to mainstream media “negligence.” To wit:

“In the summer of 1994, something terrible happened out there,” ABC’s Ted Koppel was reporting from Havana in 1998 as he pointed towards the Florida straits. “It was an incident that went all but unnoticed in the US media. The Cuban-American community protested but they protest a lot and as I say, we in the mainstream media all but ignored it. Now we welcome Cuban-American author Humberto Fontova for more details.”

“Thanks Ted! I’ll take it from here.” (Actually I’m making up the part about appearing on ABC. Actually Fox News is among the few who will tolerate me. But thanks to Ted anyway for notifying the world of this Castroite atrocity, even if four years later.)

In the predawn darkness of July 13, 1994, 72 desperate Cubans — old and young, male and female — sneaked aboard a decrepit but seaworthy tugboat in Havana harbor and set off for the U.S. and the prospect of freedom.

Let Jimmy Carter gush that “Cuba has superb systems of health care and universal education.” Let Jack Nicholson label their captive homeland “a paradise.” Let Bonnie Raitt rasp out her ditty calling it a “Happy Little Island.” Let Ted Turner hail their slavemaster as a “Helluva guy.” Let Michael Moore hail the glories of Cuba’s Healthcare in Sicko. Let Barbara Walters add gravitas while soft-soaping Castro during an “interview”: “You have brought great health to your country.”

The people boarding that tug knew better. And for a simple reason: the cruel hand of fate had slated them to live under Fidel Castro and Che Guevara’s handiwork.

The lumbering craft cleared the harbor and five foot waves started buffeting the tug. The men sprung to action as the impromptu crew while mothers, sisters and aunts hushed the terrified children, some as young as one. Turning back was out of the question.

A few miles into the turbulent sea, 30-year-old Maria Garcia felt someone tugging her sleeve. She looked down and it was her 10-year-old son, Juan. “Mami, look!” and he pointed behind them toward shore. “What’s those lights?”

“Looks like a boat following us, son,” she stuttered while stroking his hair. “Calm down, mi hijo (my son). Try to sleep. When you wake up, we’ll be with our cousins in a free country. Don’t worry.” In fact, Maria suspected the lights belonged to Castro patrol boats coming out to intercept them.

In seconds the patrol boats were alongside the tug and – WHACK!! – with its steel prow, the closest patrol boat rammed the back of the tug. People were knocked around the deck like bowling pins. But it looked like an accident, right? Rough seas and all. Could happen to anyone, right?

Hey, WATCH IT!” a man yelled as he rubbed the lump on his forehead. “We have women and children aboard!” Women held up their squalling children to get the point across. If they’d only known.

This gave the gallant Castroites nice targets for their water cannon. WHOOSH! The water cannon was zeroed and the trigger yanked. The water blast shot into the tug, swept the deck and mowed the escapees down, slamming some against bulkheads, blowing others off the deck into the five-foot waves.

“MI HIJO! MI HIJO!” Maria screamed as the water jet slammed into her, ripping half the clothes off her body and ripping Juan’s arm from her grasp. “JUANITO! JUANITO!” She fumbled frantically around her, still blinded by the water blast. Juan had gone spinning across the deck and now clung desperately to the tug’s railing 10 feet behind Maria as huge waves lapped his legs.

WHACK! Another of the steel patrol boats turned sharply and rammed the tug from the other side. Then – CRACK! another from the front! WHACK! The one from behind slammed them again. The tug was surrounded. It was obvious now: The ramming was NO accident. And in Cuba you don’t do something like this without strict orders from WAY above.

“We have women and children aboard!” The men yelled. “We’ll turn around! OK?!”

WHACK! the Castroites answered the plea by ramming them again. And this time the blow from the steel prow was followed by a sharp snapping sound from the wooden tug. In seconds the tug started coming apart and sinking. Muffled yells and cries came from below. Turns out the women and children who had scrambled into the hold for safety after the first whack had in fact scrambled into a watery tomb.

With the boat coming apart and the water rushing in around them, some got death grips on their children and managed to scramble or swim out. But not all. The roar from the water cannons and the din from the boat engines muffled most of the screams, but all around people were screaming, coughing, gagging and sinking.

Fortunately, a Greek freighter bound for Havana had happened upon the scene of slaughter and sped to the rescue. NOW one of the Castro boats threw out some life preservers on ropes and started hauling people in, pretending they’d been doing it all along.

Maria Garcia lost her son, Juanito, her husband, brother, sister, two uncles and three cousins in the maritime massacre. In all, 37 people drowned, 11 of them children. Carlos Anaya was 3 when he drowned, Yisel Alvarez 4. Helen Martinez was 6 months old.

And all this death and horror to flee from a nation that experienced net immigration throughout the 20th Century, where boats and planes brought in many more people than they took out – except on vacation. (Despite what you saw in The Godfather, actually, in 1953, more Cubans vacationed in the U.S. than Americans in Cuba. And they all happily returned home, as befit a nation with a bigger middle class than most of Europe.)

Thirty one people were finally plucked from the seas and hauled back to Cuba where all were jailed or put under house arrest. They hadn’t been through enough, you see. But a few later escaped Cuba on rafts and reached Miami. Hence we have Maria Garcia’s gut-wrenching testimony presented to the UN, the OAS and Amnesty International, who all filed “complaints,” reports, “protests.”(with the customary results.)

This was obviously a rogue operation by crazed deviants, you say. No government could possibly condone, much less directly order such a thing! Right?

Wrong. Nothing is random in Stalinist Cuba. One of the gallant water-cannon gunners was even decorated (personally) by Castro. Perhaps for expert marksmanship. A three-year old child presents a pretty small target. A six-month old baby an even smaller one. “Magnificent job defending the glorious revolution, companero!”

Obama's jihadist allies are purging the country -- while the world is silent.

The worst Christian massacre—complete with mass graves, tortured-to-death women and children, and destroyed churches—recently took place in Syria, at the hands of the U.S.-supported jihadi “rebels”; and the U.S. government and its “mainstream media” mouthpiece are, as usual, silent (that is, when not actively trying to minimize matters).

The massacre took place in Sadad, an ancient Syriac Orthodox Christian habitation, so old as to be mentioned in the Old Testament. Most of the region’s inhabitants are poor, as Sadad is situated in the remote desert between Homs and Damascus (desert regions, till now, apparently the only places Syria’s Christians could feel secure; 600 Christian families had earlier fled there for sanctuary from the jihad, only to be followed by it).

In late October, the U.S-supported “opposition” invaded and occupied Sadad for over a week, till ousted by the nation’s military. Among other atrocities, 45 Christians—including women and children—were killed, several tortured to death; Sadat’s 14 churches, some ancient, were ransacked and destroyed; the bodies of six people from one family, ranging from ages 16 to 90, were found at the bottom of a well (an increasingly common fate for “subhuman” Christians).

The jihadis even made a graphic video (with English subtitles) of those whom they massacred, while shouting Islam’s victory-cry, “Allahu Akbar” (which John McCain equates to a Christian saying “thank God”). Another video, made after Sadad was liberated shows more graphic atrocities.

Here are the words of Archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh, Syriac Orthodox Metropolitan of Homs and Hama (another detailed account, with pictures, appears here):

What happened in Sadad is the most serious and biggest massacre of Christians in Syria in the past two years and a half… 45 innocent civilians were martyred for no reason, and among them several women and children, many thrown into mass graves. Other civilians were threatened and terrorized. 30 were wounded and 10 are still missing. For one week, 1,500 families were held as hostages and human shields. Among them children, the elderly, the young, men and women…. All the houses of Sadad were robbed and property looted. The churches are damaged and desecrated, deprived of old books and precious furniture… What happened in Sadad is the largest massacre of Christians in Syria and the second in the Middle East, after the one in the Church of Our Lady of Salvation in Iraq, in 2010.

In the Iraqi attack of 2010, al-Qaeda linked jihadis stormed the church during service killing some 60 Christian worshippers (see here for graphic images of the aftermath).

While the archbishop is correct that this is the “largest massacre of Christians in Syria,” it is but the tip of the iceberg of the persecution the nation’s Christian minority has suffered—including beheadings, church bombings, kidnappings, rapes, and dislocation of hundreds of thousands of Christians—since the war broke out (see Syria entries in monthly persecution series).

A month before Sadad, another ancient Christian region, Ma‘loula, one of the world’s very few regions that still spoke Aramaic, the language of Jesus, was besieged by the jihadis, its churches bombarded and plundered, its inhabitants forced to convert to Islam or die. The last words of one man who refused were: “I am a Christian, and if you want to kill me for this, I do not object to it.”

The archbishop concluded his statement concerning Sadad by asking: “We have shouted aid to the world but no one has listened to us. Where is the Christian conscience? Where is human consciousness? Where are my brothers? I think of all those who are suffering today in mourning and discomfort: We ask everyone to pray for us.”

Serge Trifkovic—who hails from a European region especially acquainted with Islamic jihad—responds to the archbishop as follows:

That no “human consciousness” is to be found in the White House, or in the editorial offices of the leading Western media, is now a matter of well-established record. Just try searching for “Sadad” (or alternatively “Saddad”) on the websites of the Department of State or The New York Times. Ditto the leading European dailies, the CNN/BBC/RTF, the human-rights defending “NGOs” et al.

The problem, of which Archbishop Selwanos Boutros Alnemeh appears unaware, is no longer in the Western elite’s mere indifference to the impending demise of Christianity in the lands of its birth, but in its active, ongoing, and open contribution to that demise. Cyprus (1974) and the Balkans (1991-9) provided the test, Iraq (2003-today) the conclusive proof. In Syria the Obama administration remains committed to supporting the rebels—ah, yes, only the “moderate” ones, like the Christian-murdering “Free Syrian Army” (discretion advised again), not “even though” the result will be the same, but precisely because it will be.

In one of the Arabic videos documenting the aftermath of the Sadad massacre, as the mutilated bodies of one family are drawn from a well (around :30 second mark), a middle-aged male relative, in tears, says:

The most precious in the whole universe [his family], are now gone, leaving me alone, but thank God I am still surrounded by these loving people who remain. I want to say, let people [the jihadis] return to their minds. The problems of the world can only be solved by knowledge and brains. Enough insanity, the nerves of the people are shredded. Enough, enough—return to your minds; you people, you humans—return to your humanity, enough crimes.

As a sign of the times, here is a Syrian, an “easterner,” evoking rationalism and humanity, products of Christian civilization, at a time when the post-Christian West is governed by anything and everything—propaganda, emotionalism, mindless indoctrination—but the twain.

Why is the White House dragging its feet?

The Clarion Project has started a petition to designate the Nigerian terrorist group Boko Haram as—well, a terrorist group. The Obama Administration’s desire to end the war on terror and not pick any new fights is overriding common-sense and moral clarity. The United Kingdom has just branded Boko Haram as a terrorist group, so it’s up to American citizens to sign the petition and tell their government to stop dragging its feet.

Boko Haram, which loosely means “Western education is sacrilege,” just carried out an attack on the “sacrilegious” by massacring about 30 students and one teacher in a boarding school. The toll of the attack goes beyond the casualty numbers. Think about the parents who had to identify the scorched bodies of their children and the innocents that shiver in fear every school day. This is the third attack on a school this month, and we’re less than two weeks in.

In May, the Religious Liberty Director of the Institute on Religion and Democracy, Faith McDonnell, wrote that “Nigeria had a higher death toll from anti-Christian persecution and violence than the rest of the world combined.”

Boko Haram has carried out a bombing almost every week since August 2011. Churches are a frequent recipient of the group’s Islamism-fueled wrath. It is for this reason that the Christian Association of Nigerian-Americans is demanding that Boko Haram be designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization “for the umpteenth time.”

Although three of Boko Haram’s leaders were labeled as “Specially Designated Terrorists” in June 2012, the group as a whole is not labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization. The State Department says that a Foreign Terrorist Organization must obviously be foreign, engaged in terrorist activity and threaten the U.S. and its nationals.

There is no way to contest that Boko Haram meets this criteria. The reason it has not been designated comes down to the simple fact that the Obama Administration doesn’t want to. President Obama says that certain Al-Qaeda affiliates shouldn’t be on the target list because “not every collection of thugs that labels themselves al-Qaeda will pose a credible threat to the United States.” He argues that Boko Haram and other African extremist groups are motivated by a frustration over poor governance.

Similarly, Johnnie Carson, an Assistant Secretary of State in the Bureau of African Affairs, told Congress in July 2012 that Boko Haram shouldn’t be labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization because “our understanding is limited at best” and its violence is triggered by “social, economic problems.” He discredited his own thesis by referring to Boko Haram as a “terrorist organization” in his answer.

As McDonnell explains, “In their many publicly released statements and videos, Boko Haram has never declared poverty and marginalization to be a motive for their actions. On the contrary, they state clearly that their actions are a ‘jihad’ (Holy War).”

In fact, Boko Haram leader Abubaker Shaker makes it clear that altering policy isn’t his objective. He said, “We will consider negotiation only when we have brought the government to their knees…we will only put aside our arms—but we will not lay them down. You don’t put down your arms in Islam, you only put them aside.”

Nor is Boko Haram’s goal limited to Nigeria. In November 2012, Shekau said, “O America, die with your fury,” and said the group supports jihadists in Afghanistan that are fighting U.S. forces, as well as jihadists in many other Muslim lands.

According to the State Department, if a group is labeled a Foreign Terrorist Organization then it becomes illegal for anyone in the U.S. to provide material support to the group; any financial institution must freeze and report its assets; and members of the group are barred from entering the U.S. and ones that are already here could potentially be deported. It is shocking to think that these measures aren’t already in place.

Boko Haram’s connections with other Al-Qaeda affiliates considered to be Foreign Terrorist Organizations further highlight the absurdity of the exception made for the Nigerian group. A spokesman said in January 2012, “We enjoy financial and technical support” and that its leaders have met with Al-Qaeda in Saudi Arabia. Boko Haram has also been linked to Al-Shabaab, Al-Qaeda’s branch in Somalia and Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

In February, a former Al-Qaeda chef in Mali said that hundreds of Boko Haram members had trained in northern Mali, and personally prepared food for 200. They “arrived in Timbuktu in April 2012 in about 300 cars, after al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) swept into the city.”

Amazingly, the campaign to get Boko Haram designated for what it undeniably is has received scant attention from the media. The petition was sent to major outlets with no response. The Premium Times of Nigeria and AllAfrica.com are, thus far, the only two news sites to pick it up.

The silence is even more surprising when you consider how clear-cut of a case this is. Unlike the Muslim Brotherhood or Hezbollah, Boko Haram doesn’t have eloquent defenders in the West. It doesn’t sit in a grey area to portray itself as “moderate.” It is, by its own reckoning, in Al-Qaeda’s ideological camp and acts accordingly.

Sign the petition now and send it to your friends. It’s time to let the White House know that the country will not be silent as Boko Haram slaughters Christians and rival Muslims.

Refuting the moral equivalency argument once and for all.

Ever since last year’s Norway massacre, when Anders Breivik killed some 70 people, the relativists and Muslim apologists of the world felt exonerated: for here at last, thought they, was proof positive that terrorism had nothing to do with Islamic teachings per se. If Christianity cannot be blamed for Breivik, why blame Islam for al-Qaeda?

This question was restated in a recent email to me from Gehan D. Sabry, editor of Cross Cultures, a website dedicated to “Promoting Harmony Through Knowledge and Better Understanding.” Regarding my recent article “A Tale of Two American Martyrs,” where I discussed the slayings of two American Christians in the Muslim world due to allegations of proselytizing, she wrote:

[…] I know enough fellow Christians who agree with me that the majority of Muslims and Christians, in fact the moderates of ALL religions … get along just fine, and only the radicals of each are the ones who make the news, and cause turmoil and tragedy in this world … when I read this article of yours, I immediately remembered the psycho from Norway who killed over 70 youth recently … why don’t you try to explain that away for me?

My explanation, which may be of general interest—this question of moral equivalency plagues the many who think on superficial terms—follows:

First, the two murdered American teachers were killed by Muslims under accusations of proselytism. As it happens, according to mainstream Islamic interpretations of Sharia, proselytizing Muslims is a capital offence. In fact, it is mentioned as far back as the so-called Pact of Omar, which Muslim doctrinaires still quote from, and which delineates what non-Muslims (it was first made with Christians in Syria) must—and must not—do to safeguard their blood.

One of the stipulations they had to agree to was, “We shall not manifest our religion publicly nor convert anyone to it.” At the very end of the pact, they had to agree that “If we in any way violate these undertakings for which we ourselves stand surety, we forfeit our covenant, and we become liable to the penalties for contumacy and sedition,” which is death.

Among the dead: 49 children and 34 women. The worldwide expressions of outrage at the massacre may be the impetus for further UN sanctions, as well as increasing the likelihood that Western nations will begin supplying the Syrian rebels with more sophisticated and deadly armaments. This, along with the increased effectiveness of the Free Syrian Army, could lead to a full scale civil war that could easily spread to neighboring Lebanon and other countries, or devolve into a religious war, which would dramatically worsen the humanitarian crisis now afflicting much of the country.

Eyewitness accounts from several sources indicate that the killing spree was conducted by the feared Alawite militia fanatically loyal to President Bashar Assad, the shabbiha. Filtering in from Alawite villages near Houla, the shabbiha attacks were conducted door to door, and were apparently planned and systematically carried out. To maximize the terror, children as young as five years old were either shot or hacked to death in the presence of their parents.

On Sunday, the UN Security Council unanimously condemned the attack — a potential turning point for the international community as both Russia and China voted along with the rest of the Council to condemn the Syrian government. The significance of this vote cannot be lost on Damascus. Russia and China have blocked every single previous attempt by the UN to condemn or sanction the Assad regime for its brutal crackdown. It is clear that the massacre has caused the two permanent members of the Security Council to begin a reassessment of their unflinching support for Assad in the face of more than 9,000 dead civilians since the revolt began.

And despite the extreme reluctance of Western nations — including the United States — to speak of military intervention, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey told Fox News on Monday that more atrocities like Houla could trigger “intervention” by the military.

In a statement, French President Francois Hollande said, “The murderous folly of the Damascus regime represents a threat for regional security and its leaders will have to answer for their acts.” But Russia, while voting with the rest of the UN Security Council to condemn Assad’s government for the massacre, believes that “both sides” are responsible for the massacre. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said, “Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children. This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the government troops.”

Accounts from several eyewitnesses belie that statement. The attack began after Friday afternoon prayers in Taldou, a village outside of Houla, when several thousand protestors were fired upon by Assad’s troops. Activists on the ground say that 5 demonstrators were killed by the indiscriminate fire. In response to that attack, elements of the Free Syrian Army hit army checkpoints in Taldou. Assad’s forces responded by firing tank shells and mortars directly into a Sunni Muslim area of the town. Activists say about 15 civilians died in the barrage.

But the bloodletting began in earnest with the arrival of several dozen shabbiha militia. The militia has made a name for itself by conducting violent sweeps through suspected rebel areas, arresting most of the male population while looting houses and torturing prisoners. They are also known to stand behind army units and kill any soldier who refuses to fire at unarmed civilians.

This time, they came for blood.

An 11-year-old boy describes the attack on his family:

“My mum yelled at them,” said the boy. “She asked: ‘What do you want from my husband and son?’ A bald man with a beard shot her with a machine gun from the neck down. Then they killed my sister, Rasha, with the same gun. She was five years old. Then they shot my brother Nader in the head and in the back. I saw his soul leave his body in front of me.

After looting the house of “three televisions and a computer,” the militiamen caught up with the young man’s father, brother and uncle. They shot them as they were fleeing out of the door of the house. The boy escaped by smearing his brothers blood on his face and playing dead until the shabbiha left.

Barack Obama and his supporters are no doubt hoping the lion’s share of the credit for the deposing and killing of Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi will go to the president, who himself expressed praise for the rebels back in September. “Today, the Libyan people are writing a new chapter in the life of their nation. After four decades of darkness, they can walk the streets, free from a tyrant,” Mr. Obama said at the time. They are indeed free from a tyrant. Whether they are free from tyranny is another matter. The final days of the fighting in and around the city of Sirte resulted in a massacre, with 53 people methodically executed at a hotel — apparently by a faction of the same rebels who have assumed control of the country.

“We found 53 decomposing bodies, apparently Gaddafi supporters, at an abandoned hotel in Sirte, and some had their hands bound behind their backs when they were shot,” said Peter Bouckaert, emergencies director at Human Rights Watch (HRW). “This requires the immediate attention of the Libyan authorities to investigate what happened and hold accountable those responsible.”

The Libyan authority at the moment is the National Transitional Council (NTC) chaired by Mustafa Abdel-Jalil, and the likelihood of a competent investigation taking place is slim: on Monday volunteers were busy scrubbing the garden of the Mahari Hotel, where the alleged atrocity appears to have taken place. The volunteers, who said the dead were comprised of “at least two former Gaddafi government officials, local loyalist fighters and maybe civilians,” have collected dozens of bodies. But other evidence of the massacre, such as shell casings, plastic ties used to bind the hands of the victims, and patches of bloody grass remain behind.

Complicating any investigation is the fact that the bodies, which were found clustered together, were already in an advanced state of decomposition when they were viewed by HRW observers on October 23rd. HRW noted that the “condition of the bodies suggests the victims were killed approximately one week prior to their discovery, between October 14 and October 19. The bloodstains on the grass directly below the bodies, bullet holes visible in the ground, and the spent cartridges of AK-47 and FN-1 rifles scattered around the site strongly suggest that some, if not all of the people, were shot and killed in the location where they were discovered.”

According to witnesses HRW interviewed, anti-Gaddafi rebels from the city of Misrata had been in control of that section of Sirte since early October. Anti-Gaddafi brigades are organized according to their city of origin, and the city of Misrata has more that 100 brigades (katiba) which contain small numbers of fighters who operated semi-autonomously during battle. The names of five of those brigades, the “Tiger Brigade” (Al-Nimer), the “Support Brigade” (Al-Isnad), the “Jaguar Brigade” (Al-Fahad), the “Lion Brigade” (Al-Asad), and the “Citadel Brigade” (Al-Qasba), covered the walls and entrance of the hotel. This was apparently due to the fact that they used the facility as a base of operations. HRW did not directly accuse these five brigades of conducting the massacre, but said their presence at the hotel when it occurred “requires immediate investigation.”

The current record of the National Transitional Council suggests such immediacy is a pipe dream for both practical and political reasons. Practically speaking, the rebels who ostensibly liberated the nation are comprised of several separate militias. Despite repeated attempts, the NTC has failed to establish a chain of command among those militias or form a national army. Thus, despite several alleged incidents of arbitrary arrests, torture or murder, the mechanisms for dealing with formal investigations and prosecutions remain largely undeveloped. Politically speaking, the NTC’s attempt to burnish its own legitimacy requires it to establish relationships with the leaders of those militias, which may lead to more than a few alleged incidents of extra-legal activity being downplayed, ignored altogether or blamed on Gaddafi and his loyalist forces.

This last fallback position appears to be the stance the NTC is adopting with regard to the killing of Gen. Abdul Fattah Younes, the rebel’s top military commander, as well as two of his aides, back in August. Younis, former aide and interior minister to Gaddafi, defected on February 20th, and was credited with helping the rebels overthrow the regime’s military garrison in the city of Benghazi. When the murders occurred, Younis was reportedly in the hands of rebel forces. NTC Chairman Abdel-Jalil had promised to investigate that incident, claiming no one, “not even the highest officials” would remain above suspicion. Yet he proposed that Gaddafi loyalists were responsible, even as other members of his organization revealed that rebels remained the chief suspects in the killing.

Andrew Klavan is here again with some sensitivity training, absolutely free. When pastor-slash-attention-seeking-kook Terry Jones committed the crude and nasty act of burning the Koran, Muslims in Afghanistan responded with thoughtful discussions and debates about the unpleasant edges of free expression… Whoops, just kidding! In fact, they cut people’s heads off! Sort of a different culture, huh. And you know what that means. Right! We have to learn how to treat blood-crazed Islamic madmen with respect and tolerance. So here are some tips…

The Christmas Eve Massacre and other attacks on the Muslim country’s religious minorities.

At midnight every January 6th, Christmas Eve Mass ends and the early hours of Christmas Day begin for the Coptic Church in Egypt. As Orthodox Christians, descendants of Egypt’s ancient Christianity that far outdates Islam, the Copts have to wait longer for Christmas festivities than those who celebrate on December 25. Perhaps to emphasize that the long-anticipated day has arrived, the Mass celebrating Christ’s birth ends with the joyous ringing of bells as Egyptian Christians, dressed in their finest clothes, head home to continue their Christmas celebrations.

It is unusual for church bells to ring before midnight. But such was the case this past January 6, 2010, at Mar Yohana (St. John’s) Church in Nag Hammadi, Upper Egypt, the town famous for the discovery of the Gnostic Gospels. The church’s pastor, Bishop Anba Kirollos, was concerned by threats made against the Christians and decided to start Mass an hour early. At 11:00 P.M., church bells rang and worshippers streamed out the doors. It was a perfect time for an attack on the Christian community.

Three cars drove by the church and masked men with automatic weapons shot into the crowd, eyewitnesses later told the Middle East Christian Association (MECA). The cars then drove down three nearby side streets, shooting more Copts. Eight Christians were killed, six young church deacons instantly. A Muslim security guard was also killed, and many worshippers injured.

“The Muslims promised us a wonderful Christmas,” one wounded parishioner told the Coptic News Bulletin, “I think the message is received now.” All further Christmas celebrations were cancelled. In a moment’s time, one of the most joyous days of the year for Christians was transformed into a day of horror and carnage. That was as much the goal of the Muslim gunmen as the actual shootings. Christian holy days and holy places are most often targeted. Just seven months before, Muslims in the village of Higaza opened fire on worshippers leaving an Easter Eve service, killing two young men and wounding a woman.

Bishop Kirollos believes he was the intended target of the attack. “I was the one intended to be assassinated by this plot, and when it failed the criminals turned round and started shooting and finishing off the young ones,” Kirollos told MECA. He received death threats over the weeks before Christmas, and told reporters from Free Copts that the Muslims wanted to “dispose of him” because he had criticized the State Security for failing to protect Christians attacked by Muslims in November in several towns within the parish of Nag Hammadi.

The November attacks took place when a local 12 year-old Muslim girl was allegedly abducted and raped by a Coptic youth. The only detail that the girl gave identifying her attacker was that he wore a black jacket. Raping Muslim girls is not the common practice of Copts, and considering the vulnerability of Christians in Egypt, including serial abduction and rape of Christian girls by Muslim men, it would be not just evil, but incredibly stupid for a Christian to commit rape. More likely, blaming a Christian who, unfortunately, wore a black jacket, served as a good excuse for a desired November rampage.

On November 21, a mob of some 3000 gathered in front of the police headquarters in Farshoot, attempting to abduct the accused Copt before his trial. When they failed, they turned their violence on the Coptic community. The mob torched Christian-owned stores and attacked Christians in Farshoot and nearby villages Kom Ahmar, Shakiki and Ezbet Waziri. According to the Assyrian International News Agency (AINA), several Coptic women were reportedly abducted by the mobs, and many people were injured, including a priest whose skull was fractured when the mob stopped his car and assaulted him. One witness said that Muslims threw some Coptic families out of their homes and were now occupying them.

“They want the Copts to be poor and therefore are destroying the Coptic economy in these areas,” Wagih Yacoub of the Middle East Christian Association told AINA. By the evening of November 21st, all the Coptic businesses were looted and burned. Security forces did nothing to stop the mob. Witnesses said that the police just “watched the mob” and dispersed them from one street “only for them to appear in the next,” according to AINA.

Bishop Kirollos was interviewed by Free Copts at the time of the attacks. He said that the violence was “definitely pre-planned,” and revealed that many in the mob were students from the Al-Azhar Institute in Farshoot. They were “incited by their Dean who sent them out on a rampage against the Copts,” he added. He said that even if the rape accusation was true, it was committed by one person and should not result in attacks on peaceful Christians who denounced this action “that does not comply with Christian teaching.” He demanded to know why there were such “barbaric attacks by mobs” and why the security forces had not prevented them.

The November wreckage was not enough to satisfy the Islamists. Kirollos told Agence France-Presse (AFP) that some of his congregation had received cell phone calls threatening them that Muslims would “avenge the rape of the girl” during Christmas celebrations. And Kirollos received text messages telling him, “you’re next.” He asked the police to increase security for the church at Christmas, but they refused.

AINA reported that most of the witnesses of the killings believed that there was collusion between the shooters and the State Security. It was the first time that none of them attended the Christmas Eve midnight mass. “They must have known in advance of the shootings and avoided the embarrassment of participating in the festivities inside church,” said one witness. Another witness told AINA, “Security came as everything was over, instead of trying to catch the criminals, they were interrogating us about the description of the cars.”

Armed with descriptions of the vehicles and the suspects, Egyptian State Security worked quickly and efficiently to round up … over 100 Coptic teenage boys. According to AINA, the police began random arrests the day after the massacre of Christian teens who were protesting the killings. On January 13 AINA reported that “multiple members of families have been arrested without warrants” with most of the arrests taking place at dawn. A Nag Hammadi teacher, Anwar Samuel, told Free Copts that State Security came looking for his nephew at four o’clock in the morning. The young man was out of the country, Samuel said, so they arrested his three other nephews instead, “and took them away in their pajamas.” They were subjected to electric shocks.

AINA explained that arresting Copts after every attack against Copts “is the usual scenario.” Holding Christians from Nag Hammadi without charges, the news agency reported, is the security services’ “balancing act” to pressure the church to drop the charges against the Muslim perpetrators in exchange for setting the boys free. The arrests of the Coptic teenagers specifically was meant to pressure Bishop Kirollos into recanting his past statements on the role of State Security in the attacks. Some families reported that their sons were tricked into going to the police station when police told them that Bishop Kirollos “wanted them to do so for their safety.”

The three Muslim men who were responsible for the Christmas Eve massacre were arrested two days after the killings. The main suspect, Mohamed El-Kamony is known as a hired killer and has been used by political candidates to intimidate voters in Nag Hammadi, according to AINA. A Dream Team of 25 Muslim attorneys is set to the defend the killers, claiming they acted as they did to avenge the “honor” of Muslims for the rape. Everyone knows how important honor is to Islamists — so important that girl victims themselves are usually shot, stabbed, stoned, or buried alive by a concerned male family member for honor’s sake.

A sympathetic court will give a light, if any, sentence, and the killers will soon be released. Meanwhile, the police attempt to force the church and Coptic Christians to accept ‘reconciliation,’ in which Coptic victims give up all criminal and civil charges against the perpetrators. Eighty of the young Christians are still being held without charge.

The Christmas Eve killings and detention of the Egyptian Christians stirred outrage around the world, mostly by Copts who have fled Egypt and its persecution to live elsewhere. In Washington, DC, Toronto, Tampa, Seattle, New York, and elsewhere, Copts held public demonstrations. But the official response from both Egypt and from other governments, including the United States, has been lacking.

The Egyptian government has taken pains to portray the Christmas Eve murders as “criminal acts” with no tinge of sectarianism. Speaking to the Almasry Alyom newspaper, Mufid Shehab, the minister of legal affairs insisted that “no religious dimension should be attached to this incident, only a criminal one.” The Christmas Eve killings were not terrorism, just man-caused disaster.

AINA reported that the head of the Egyptian Parliament, Dr. Fathi Sourour, completely “misrepresented the facts” of the incident in an interview with BBC Arabic on January 31. Fathi said that “the Nag Hammadi shooting of Christians on Christmas Eve was a single criminal act, with no sectarian dimensions.” He added that this crime was “prompted by the ‘death’ of a Muslim girl as a result of being raped by a Copt.” The girl, who is alive, is scheduled to appear in court on February 17 in the rape trial. “Copts were shocked and angered by this statement which they consider to be another lie propagated by the government to trigger another wave of Muslim attacks against them,” AINA said.

The U.S. government, on the other hand, did not deny the sectarian impetus for the killings. On January 14 the AFP reported that U.S. Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor, Michael Posner, expressed the United States’ concern about the “tragic events in Nag Hammadi,” and that they revealed “an atmosphere of intolerance.” Further, said Posner, who was on his first State trip to Egypt, “There needs to be prosecution… there needs to be a break in the sense of impunity and there needs to be justice.”

But although Posner denounced such human rights abuses in Egypt as emergency law, prison conditions, torture, and religious freedom violations, he said “we know that in any society change occurs from within… It’s an Egyptian discussion.” The AFP report, posted by Free Copts, noted that Barack Obama has “placed less emphasis on political reform in the region than his predecessor George W. Bush.” The Obama administration’s rhetoric “has backed away from Bush’s robust calls for Egypt to release dissidents and ensure fair elections,” the AFP report concluded. Granting that there is a sectarian aspect to the treatment of the Copts and other religious minorities, the Obama Administration does not see it as a systemic problem in Islam but as something that can be resolved by an “Egyptian discussion.”

In Congress, on the other hand, some robust calls for the reform of Egypt sometimes are still issued. U.S. Representative Frank R. Wolf (R-VA), a long-time defender of human rights and religious freedom, introduced a resolution in the first session of this Congress “calling on the Egyptian Government to respect human rights and freedoms of religion and expression in Egypt.” .

After first acknowledging Egypt’s significance in the Middle East peace process and the fight against international terrorism and “fundamentalism,” the resolution is a laundry list of human rights violations. It notes the persecution of Copts and other religious minorities such as Ba’hai, Koranists, and Jehovah’s Witnesses in Egypt, as well as identifying government endorsed or tolerated written and recorded material vilifying Jews, such as the Protocols of the Elders of Zion. It mentions imprisoned bloggers, threats against democratic reform, and the violence against Sudanese refugees trying to flee from Egypt into Israel. The resolution also urges the President and the Secretary of State “to put human rights and religious freedom developments in Egypt very high on the U.S. government’s agenda during meetings with Egyptian officials.”

The bi-partisan resolution had garnered 32 co-sponsors when it was referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs on February 26, 2009. But it has never emerged from that committee. In light of the most recent attacks in Nag Hammadi and the extrajudicial arrests and detainments of Coptic young people that followed, it is time for pressure on the House Foreign Affairs Committee to take action on Egypt’s human rights abuses. No piece of legislation is a magic pill, especially a non-binding resolution. But it is a first step, it would raise the issues, and it would provide opportunity for briefings and hearings on the condition of Copts and other minorities in Egypt. Such efforts are needed to convince the Egyptian government that America is still committed to human rights and religious freedom.

If 2001 was the year when international terrorism hit American soil, then 2009 was the year when Americans became the targets of domestic terrorism. In November, Army Major Nidal Malik Hasan, born in Virginia to Palestinian Muslim parents, killed 13 and wounded 30 in his one-man attack on fellow soldiers at Fort Hood in Texas. The massacre, which Senator Joseph Lieberman properly labeled “the most destructive terrorist act to be committed on American soil since 9/11,” capped a year of terrorist plots or conspiracies inside the United States, most of which were stopped by law enforcement in their planning stages. The notable fact about all these cases is that they are examples of so-called homegrown terrorism—meaning that they were planned by individuals either born or raised in the United States and executed without significant assistance from overseas networks.

In October, the American-born David Coleman Headley, who had changed his name from Daood Sayed Gilani to disguise his half-Pakistani origins, was arrested for planning an attack on the Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting Muhammad in 2006 and for providing assistance to the Pakistan-based terrorist group that carried out the 2008 Mumbai attacks in which 170 were killed. Two days after Headley was charged, Pakistani authorities arrested five Muslim men born and raised in and around Washington, D.C., for planning to take up arms against coalition forces in Afghanistan. The Washington Five were all college students, “fun-loving, career-focused children that had a bright future for themselves,” in the words of a youth coordinator who knew them.

On June 1, 2009, a 23-year-old Army recruiter in Little Rock was shot and killed by an African-American convert to Islam who, upon his arrest, began complaining about American involvement in Afghanistan and Iraq. A week before that, the Joint Terrorism Task Force, which coordinates some 40 local and federal law-enforcement agencies, arrested four men for attempting to shoot down military planes based at an Air National Guard base in Newburgh, New York, and detonate bombs at two synagogues in the Bronx.

Of the 30-odd attempted terrorist plots against the United States or American installations abroad that have been foiled since 9/11, roughly a third have been uncovered in the past year alone. What is new, and particularly frightening, about these recent attempts is that the budding perpetrators were initially indoctrinated inside the United States, with help from extremist websites or Islamic preachers. It was only after they had been brought some ways along the road to holy war that at least some of these would-be jihadists sought training and logistical support from al-Qaeda and others overseas.

This development has come as a surprise. It had become accepted wisdom that the openness of the United States and its acceptance of minority faiths and communities had helped to prevent the spread of the kind of Islamic radicalism that has gripped Western Europe over the past decade. Whereas European Muslims, many of them descendants of manual laborers imported from North Africa and the Middle East, comprise a ghettoized underclass and face great difficulty adapting to the rigid notions of European national identities, Muslims in the United States are, on average, better educated than most Americans and earn about the same amount.

Is al-Qaeda terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki recruiting leaders of CAIR?

Following the November massacre that took place at Fort Hood, Texas and the failed terrorist plane attack by the so-called ‘underpants’ bomber, all eyes have been focused on Anwar al-Awlaki, an American-born al-Qaeda leader who had been in contact with the perpetrators of both acts. Statements from those involved show al-Awlaki’s influence played a key role in the violence. If indeed that is the case, how many other souls has al-Awlaki been able to fanaticize? And could one be a leader of a local branch of one of the largest Muslim groups in the U.S.?

Anwar Nasser al-Awlaki, a regional commander for al-Qaeda in Yemen, has been suspected of having direct participation in a number of past terrorist attacks against the United States and elsewhere. However, these attacks have not garnered nearly the amount of worldwide attention for al-Awlaki as that which occurred recently by the hands of two others.

On November 5, 2009, Nidal Hasan, a 39-year-old soldier in the U.S. Army, opened fire in a military processing center, murdering 13 of his fellow soldiers and wounding 30.

On December 25, 2009, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, a 23-year-old Nigerian national, attempted to blow up a U.S. airliner using explosives found hidden in his underwear.

Subsequent to the violence, reports surfaced that both perpetrators had formerly been in contact with al-Awlaki. According to al-Awlaki, prior to the Fort Hood attack, Hasan had e-mailed him to discuss the subject of murdering American troops. And according to Yemeni authorities, it is believed that Abdulmutallab was fitted with his bomb at a home being used by al-Awlaki.

Question: How many more people has al-Awlaki been able to inspire in this way?

Hasan and Abdulmutallab were not the only ones taken in by him. Abdulmutallab said there were 20 more like himself still at large, and al-Awlaki’s charisma reached thousands, as evidenced by his popular (now defunct) Facebook fan page.

One possible recruit of al-Awlaki’s is a leader from the Southern California office of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Los Angeles), Affad Shaikh. Shaikh has written about how, following the September 11th attacks, he began “listening to” al-Awlaki.

He wrote, “I would not say that I became practicing [sic] becasue the I felt bad for the treatment by, as you say it, “kafrs”… But the deal was that there was a lack on connecting and community for me there that shared or [sic] experianced what I went through after 9/11. It was not easy for me to brush it aside… At first I didnt want to be [the ‘token Muslim’], but gradually with the treatment and [sic] pervalent atmostphere, I just went from one book to another, started with Espisito and Armstrong, went to Kotob and reading classical translations of Ghazzali and Ibn Taymiyya, and listening to people like Anwar Awlaki and Suhaib Webb.”

The “Kotob” whom he is referencing is Sayyid Qutb, a Muslim Brotherhood icon who is considered by many to be the father of the modern Islamic extremist movement. Certainly, it is well known that it was his ideology that was adopted by al-Qaeda.

Suhaib Webb is a popular speaker at various radical Muslim functions throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Shaikh’s quote is in reference to a piece he had penned in September 2006 for his personal blog, entitled ‘Five Years Ago an American Muslim was born.’ In it, he discusses how 9/11 transformed him into a fundamentalist Muslim. He said that, prior to 9/11, he “had no desire to be involved in” radical Islamic groups such as “the Muslim Student Association or the Council on American-Islamic Relations.”

Indeed, soon Shaikh became involved with both organizations – the latter, CAIR, having major ties to Hamas and its global leader Mousa Abu Marzook.

At the time, Shaikh was residing in San Diego, a former stomping ground to al-Awlaki and two of the 9/11 hijackers, Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf al-Hazmi, whom witnesses claim al-Awlaki became close with.

Another individual close to al-Awlaki was Edgar Hopida, the current Public Relations Director of CAIR-San Diego. Hopida attended al-Awlaki’s San Diego mosque, Masjid Ar-Ribat al-Islami, where al-Awlaki trained Hopida in the Islamic religion shortly after he converted from Catholicism. Hopida told a local television station that al-Awlaki was a “respected imam” and that people should not jump to conclusions regarding his terrorism ties.

However, if in fact al-Awlaki was involved in the above individuals’ lives more than merely knowing them, then those in charge need to jump to conclusions and quickly move to examine every individual that has ever had a connection to him.

Today, Affad Shaikh is the Civil Rights Manager of CAIR-Los Angeles, the main chapter of CAIR-California. He has held this position for nearly four years, since April 2006.

Within this time, in July 2008, Shaikh was stopped with others at the U.S./Mexico border by Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents. According to Shaikh, the agents, whom he described as “ignorant, incompetent and inhuman,” had reason to believe that Shaikh and his associates were plotting to assassinate President Bush. Shaikh complained that he was held for “three hours” at the checkpoint.

As well, Shaikh’s radical views tend to mimic those of violent extremists overseas. He has referred to Americans in Iraq as “Crusaders,” and he has said that “the United States is among the least peaceful nations in the world.”

Concerning Nidal Hassan, Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, and the 9/11 hijackers, warning signs and actual warnings (in the case of Abdulmutallab’s father), which could have possibly averted disasters, were overlooked. These signs must not be overlooked with regard to Affad Shaikh and the like.

In the name of national security, precautions need to be taken. About Anwar al-Awlaki, a.k.a. Abu Atiq, we cannot say we weren’t warned.

After Barack Obama won the election, several Bush appointees running the war on terror came by our offices to sum up. On each visit, one point recurred: Coming into this world from the outside, they soon realized the scale of responsibility was larger than anything they had imagined.

If the Hasan massacre at Fort Hood didn’t bring Barack Obama to this moment, I’m guessing the holidays’ two terror horrors did. On Christmas, a suicide bomber came close to filling the Michigan sky with several hundred bodies. Days later, physician and suicide bomber Humam Khalil Abu Mulal al-Balawi blew up and killed seven CIA officers or contractors in Afghanistan. The Taliban then released a pre-bomb video of Balawi promising more revenge “inside and outside America.”

The Internet guarantees there is little chance this madness will burn itself out. A Jordanian doctor and a kid from a Nigerian banking family show how for the first time in history we have a homicidal ideology yoked to religion, which relentlessly draws energy and soldiers from the new phenomenon of the Web.

We have arrived at a familiar place—a U.S. president realizing that he is facing a determined and cruel enemy. Who in our politics, besides his foreign policy team, will stay the course with him the next three years?

His own party?

As the United States prepares to try Nidal Malik Hasan for 13 counts of murder and 32 counts of attempted murder at Fort Hood last month, few question the suspect’s guilt, but many disagree about his motives. Yet the evidence is now conclusive: the Fort Hood massacre was an act of Islamic terror. Before his shooting spree, Hasan told colleagues that non-Muslims were infidels condemned to hell and that they should be beheaded and have boiling oil poured down their throats. Hasan traded 18 e-mails with Anwar al-Awlaki, an al-Qaida recruiter. On the morning of the massacre, he gave his neighbor a Koran as he was departing for the base, telling her that he was going to do “good work for God.” Wearing Pakistani garb, Hasan shouted “Allahu akbar” as he began firing at U.S. troops.

Despite the plentiful evidence, however, leftists refuse to accept Hasan’s Islamic inspiration. We’ve heard the rationalizations: Hasan was a nut; the stresses of serving in the military drove him crazy; he experienced anti-Islamic discrimination; anyone is capable of “losing it” under such stressful conditions; and so on. These reflexive denials are a logical continuation of the Left’s long tradition of denying the evil of our totalitarian enemies—or, when forced to acknowledge them, blaming them on the United States. This was the pattern throughout the Cold War, and it’s continued during the War on Terror.

When it’s proven beyond reasonable doubt that jihadism was in fact Hasan’s motive, here’s a prediction: leftists will either fall into apathetic silence or respond that it was American racism, oppression, and Islamophobia that forced Hasan’s hand. To recognize the evil of Nidal Hasan and his ideology, to admit the existence of pernicious enemies, is to concede that there are societies, cultures, and systems that are much more unjust than ours. This is an untenable step for leftists to take, because it means acknowledging that there is something superior about our civilization that’s worth saving and defending.

The notion that his own society is evil and unjust is the bedrock of the leftist’s vision. Wicked capitalists trample on the poor, the oppressed, and the downtrodden; the leftist appoints himself to rescue these victims. He is a self-styled social redeemer, leading a movement to liberate the masses, even if it results in the destruction of his own society. This political mission provides him with immense moral indignation and, therefore, moral superiority, dispositions from which, in turn, he derives emotional self-gratification. His whole belief system provides him with a sense of belonging; he joins other social redeemers, as well as the victims, real or imagined, who wait for him to break their chains.

Thus, the leftist’s political disposition is a faith that reinforces his personal identity and sense of belonging. Admitting that Hasan is a jihadist would undermine that faith. It would also expose the leftist to potential excommunication from his social community. He’d become politically suspect to his peers, perhaps even accused of becoming a reactionary right-winger. That’s why we will continue to witness more Fort Hood denial from the Left, with all of its irrationality and disregard for human life.
