Protests kick off against the pro-terrorist opera, "The Death of Klinghoffer."

Leon Klinghoffer’s daughters Lisa and Ilsa Klinghoffer say that the play The Death of Klinghoffer, which premiers Monday evening at Lincoln Center, is unacceptable, stating, “We are outraged at the exploitation of our parents and the coldblooded murder of our father as the centerpiece of a production that appears to us to be anti-Semitic.” Countless media outlets, including The New York Daily News, noted that The Death of Klinghoffer has been “reviled as anti-Semitic and horribly sympathetic to the killers.”

Daniel Pearl’s father, in a letter that will be read at the protests Monday outside of Lincoln Center, notes that the Met is wrong to air this play. The letter reads in part as follows:

In joining you today to protest the New York Metropolitan Opera production of this opera, I echo the silenced voice of my son, Daniel Pearl, and the silenced voices of other victims of terror, including James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and including thousands of men, women and children who were murdered, maimed or left heartbroken by the new menace of our generation, a menace that the Met has decided to accept and orchestrate as just another activity of normative civilized society, just another phenomenon worthy of artistic expression. They tell us that the composer tried to “understand the hijackers, their motivations, and their grievances.”

I submit to you that there has never been a crime in human history lacking grievance and motivation. The 9/11 lunatics had profound motivations, and the murderers of my son, Daniel Pearl, had very compelling “grievances.” In the past few weeks we have seen with our own eyes that Hamas and ISIS have grievances, too and, they, too, are lining up for operatic productions with the Met.

Yet civilized society, from the time of our caveman ancestors, has learned to protect itself by codifying right from wrong, separating the holy from the profane, distinguishing that which deserves the sound of orchestras from that which deserves our unconditional revulsion. The Met has smeared this distinction and thus betrayed their contract with society. I submit to you that choreographing an operatic drama around criminal pathology is not an artistic prerogative, but a blatant betrayal of public trust.

We do not stage operas for rapists and child molesters, and we do not compose symphonies for penetrating the minds of ISIS executioners. What we are seeing here in New York today is not an artistic expression that challenges the limits of morality, but a moral deformity that challenges the limits of the art. This opera is not about the mentality of deranged terrorists, but about the judgment of our arts directors. The New York Met has squandered humanity’s greatest treasure — our moral compass, our sense of right and wrong, and, most sadly, our reverence for music as a noble expression of the human spirit. We might be able some day to forgive the Met for de-criminalizing brutal minds, but we will never forgive them for poisoning our music — for turning our best violins and our iconic concert halls into mega-phones for excusing evil.”

Meanwhile, the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), which describes itself as “the nation’s premier civil rights/human relations agency,” has rubber-stamped the Met’s airing of this anti-Semitic opera. While The Death of Klinghoffer includes libels that Jews get fat from the poor and chea, and has countless anti-Semitic themes, the ADL has cited “artistic freedoms” in approving the Metropolitan Opera’s decision to feature the anti-Semitic opera. Shame on the ADL – they are wrong.

On the side of truth and justice: the Klinghoffer family, Daniel Pearl’s family, terror victims, countless Jewish organizations (including the Simon Wiesenthal Center), the former United States Attorney General Michael Mukasey, Former NY Governor George Pataki, numerous other religious organizations and a slew of others oppose the play and will protest outside on Monday. Rabbi Avi Weiss will lead a morning prayer vigil where participants will raise a voice of outrage against this play which celebrates terrorist murders. They will have a wheelchair to illustrate the plight of Klinghoffer, an American World War II veteran who was killed by terrorists of the Palestine Liberation Front (PFLF).

I live across the street from Lincoln Center – it’s despicable and horrible that the Lincoln Center allows the show to go on. Terrorists kill Americans – and that is not art.

The Metropolitan Opera is romanticizing murder and terrorism.

French jihadists return home.

Last February, French authorities broke up a terrorist plot they described as “imminent,” seizing nine hundred grams of explosives from the apartment building of a twenty-three year-old Islamist recently returned from Syria where he was suspected of having waged jihad. Two men escaped the police raid, in which several wills were also found, one belonging to a 25-year-old man described as “a candidate for the jihad.”

“This case is emblematic of that which one has always feared,” a police source close to the investigation told the French newspaper, Le Figaro, at the time, explaining that young French Muslims who had participated in the Syrian jihad and returned “radical, trained, hardened” with a terrorist project in mind are France’s newest terrorist threat.

This fear became a reality for French authorities when Mehdi Nemmouche, 29, a French Muslim and veteran jihadist of the Syrian war, was arrested Friday in southern France “in possession of firearms and large quantities of ammunition.” Nemmouche is suspected of having killed three people in a shooting rampage in Brussel’s Jewish museum on May 24. After the arrest, police apparently found a video he made, claiming responsibility for the attack.

The French government’s growing concern about the danger posed by returning jihadists to France (and now to other countries) manifested itself last April when Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve announced a plan to prevent young French Muslims from leaving home for Syria. Once there, they join the al-Qaida-connected al-Nusra Front to battle the regime of Bashar al-Assad. Some also enlist in the even more extreme terrorist group, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). All of which only deepens their radicalization and hatred for the West.

The French government’s plan contains about 20 measures, chief among which is a “green number”, active since April 29, which people can privately inform authorities about potential jihadists. In its first ten days of operation, the anti-jihad “green number” was reported in the French media to have registered 24 cases (18 by phone and six by internet) of interest to authorities. They involved people between the ages of 14 and 34, of which eight were women and 16 men.

“These calls have already established five actual departures for Syria,” an interior ministry source told Le Figaro.

But opposition political leader Marine Le Pen of the National Front Party called Cazeneuve’s plan “cosmetic.”

“It does not attack the root of the problem, the speech in some mosques that are genuine calls to jihad,” Le Pen told a French radio station. “Nor does the plan attack recruiters and funding from foreign countries known to support terrorist fundamentalism, such as Qatar.”

What triggered France’s sudden concern for citizens and residents taking part in the Syrian war three years after its outbreak was not security issues but rather the deaths of two young brothers killed there last December. They were part of a group of 12 young French Muslims that had left France to fulfill their jihad duty in Syria. The brothers’ deaths and this group’s departure “unleashed a mobilization against jihadist indoctrination” in France early this year.

But another, perhaps more important, reason regarding the French government’s sudden interest in returning French jihadists concerns numbers. Cazeneuve revealed the disturbing fact that the number of Syria-bound French jihadists has increased 75 percent over the past few months. Security officials are calling this “an unheard of exodus.” Altogether, according to Cazenueve’s figures, 285 French Muslims are currently involved in “the Syrian quagmire,” 120 are in transit, a further 100 had returned to France and about 30 have perished in the conflict.

These are astonishing numbers when compared to the approximately 50 French jihadists intelligence officials identified as having taken part in the Afghanistan jihad from 2001 to 2011. In total, about 2,000 European Muslims are believed to have reached the Syrian battlefields, according to the military news website strategypage.com. About 100 Americans jihadists are also believed to be in Syria, one of whom last week became the first American suicide bomber there.

And as if all this wasn’t cause enough for concern, French authorities have admitted they will not be able to keep track of the expected large numbers of returning jihadists, stating that surveillance “is going to cost a fortune.” In other words, they will be overwhelmed – if they aren’t already. One observer perhaps illuminated this unsettling situation best when, using dark humour, he commented that, at this rate, there will be so many former French jihadists from the Syrian war the government will have to build a veterans homes for them.

The extent of the France’s jihadist problem is actually worse than Cazeneuve portrayed. There are also French citizens waging jihad in North Africa as well as in Yemen where two French nationals were recently arrested in connection with the war al-Qaeda is waging against Yemen’s government. So the number of current and former French jihadists is actually estimated by some at about 800. But this may not include those flying under the radar and as yet unknown to authorities.

To give an idea of the extent of the European jihadist phenomenon, according to strategypage.com, Turkey, a major entry point to Syria, currently has a list of about 4,000 European Muslims that their governments believe are jihad bound and have asked be detained. Turkey has caught and returned about 500 so far.

Some of the French jihadists have been arrested upon their return to France and put on trial for associating with a terrorist group. But, if convicted, the punishments they receive are usually light. And if they are minors, then none at all.

One of the problems the French legal system faces in prosecuting returned jihadists is that they have not committed a crime on French soil. It is also sometimes difficult to establish whether they actually joined a banned terrorist group when abroad. Some of the accused have said they had left France simply to go on holidays. Le Figaro reports that there are currently 40 cases before the courts regarding French jihadists. Some concern crimes, such as armed robbery, committed by jihadi hopefuls before leaving France to finance their trip to the Syrian battlefields.

Some of the reasons offered for jihad’s attraction for young French Muslims range from poor integration into French society (between 50 and 60 percent of men in French prisons are Muslim, although Muslims make up only ten percent of France’s population), testing the limits of authority of a society that has set few for young people, and the doctrine of Islamic supremacy. The latter is inculcated by radical preachers who do not like non-Islamic societies and do not accept that other religions are equal to Islam. Rather, France and other western countries must become Islamic, by force if necessary.

Because of the large numbers of French Muslims taking part in the Syrian jihad and the resulting danger they represent, many in France are now questioning the meaning of French citizenship. This issue may now become a burning one after Nemmouche’s arrest.

It is currently argued that returning jihadists may be French nationals, but are citizens only on paper. In addition, many French jihadists, like the two arrested in Yemen, possess dual citizenship, often from an Islamic state. As one observer commented, they are not French “neither by culture, nor by their mode of living, nor by any attachment to France.”

“They have only a French identity card,” stated another. “It is the difference between being and having.”

As a result, it has been proposed that French jihadists not be allowed to return to France because of the increasingly visible security risk. Some believe they should not even be prevented from leaving the country, only prevented from returning. This argument was given a boost when four French journalists, kidnapped and held eleven months by ISIL, said after their release last April that some of their captors spoke French. This topic will probably receive greater attention after the Brussel’s tragedy.

Gilbert Collard, a National Front federal parliamentarian, put forward the non-return argument on French television last April after the kidnapped journalists’ homecoming. He prophetically stated it is necessary to prevent the jihadists’ re-entry into France in order to avoid more killings like those committed by Mohammed Merah, a French Muslim terrorist who murdered three Jews and four soldiers in France in 2012. Regarding the danger these jihadists pose, Collard said one would have to be “completely mindless, decerebrated, not to be worried.”

“One is going to have …people who have left to conduct holy war return to French territory trained, equipped and who are going to be unmanageable,” he said.

Unfortunately, due to an unshaken belief in multiculturalism and an attachment to the Muslim vote, France’s socialist government will most likely never adopt Collard’s common-sense, life-saving proposal, especially since he belongs to the party French socialists love to hate. But this unwillingness and inability to look reality in the face and confront the danger radical Islam and jihad pose to France, insures that returning jihadists do not have much to fear in the future, while law-abiding French and European citizens, especially Jewish ones, do.

For Hollywoodites, even the murder of Jews in the Holocaust is all about them.

Hollywoodites aren’t exactly known for their firm grasp of history. In Hollywood’s view, World War II was an aimless exercise (The Thin Red Line, Saving Private Ryan), the Vietnam War was an excuse for brutal white trash to go hog-wild (Platoon, Casualties of War), and JFK was shot by everybody but the Communists (JFK). But there is one thing Hollywoodites know: it’s all about them. That’s why there have been more movies made about McCarthyism than 9/11.

It’s also why this week, two A-list music stars demonstrated their complete ignorance and self-centeredness on a worldwide scale.

Justin Bieber, the 19-year-old out-of-nowhere pop phenom, visited Amsterdam, where he dropped by the Anne Frank House – the home where Jewish teenager Anne Frank hid with her family from the Nazis before being caught and sent to Bergen Belsen, where she died. On his way out, Bieber made sure to leave a note: “Truly inspiring to be able to come here.” So far, so good. Then: “Anne was a great girl.” Flippant, but passable. And finally the bombshell: “Hopefully she would have been a Belieber.”

Yes, even the murder of Jews in the Holocaust was all about Justin Bieber. In what world does it matter whether Anne Frank would have liked Justin Bieber’s music? Would she have been whistling it as the Germans packed her into a cattle car? Confronted with the true nature of evil, the Hollywood mentality says: if it doesn’t affect me, I don’t truly care very much.

But that was hardly the only massive historical ego trip of the week. Jay-Z, President Obama’s favorite rapper and hip-hop fundraiser, took a trip to Communist Cuba with his wife, Beyonce. The Treasury Department approved the trip, although everyone else in the Obama administration from Jay Carney to the State Department denied involvement.

Nonetheless, stung by criticism, Jay-Z cut a rap about his controversial trip. The track was replete with brilliant witticisms: “I done turned Havana to Atlanta”; “You gettin’ too much bread, they try to jam you / Boy from the hood but got White House clearance”; “Obama said ‘Chill, you gonna get me impeached’ / But you don’t need this s*** anyway”; “Politicians never did s*** for me / Except lie to me, distort history.”

But when it comes to historical distortion, Jay-Z needed no help from politicians: “I’m in Cuba, I love Cubans / This communist talk is so confusing.” Yes, communism is confusing. It’s not as though it can be summed up in 22 words or so: government ownership of the means of production, resulting in compulsory labor and redistribution of wealth, mass starvation, and murderous crackdowns on freedom.

Communism is confusing for those in Hollywood, but only when they want to travel to Cuba. In their everyday lives, they are the ultimate capitalists: they stash their cash in offshore accounts, rake in dough at incredible rates, and as Jay-Z raps, buy basketball teams: “Would’ve brought the Nets to Brooklyn for free / Except I made millions off it, you f***in’ dweeb / I still own the building, I’m still keeping my seat / Y’all buy that bulls***, you’d better keep y’all receipt.” Good thing Jay-Z doesn’t live in Cuba. He just travels there.

Ignorance is forgivable. Loud ignorance is obnoxious. Egotistic ignorance is unforgivable. And whether it’s Justin Bieber hoping that a murdered girl from the Holocaust could have heard his music or Jay-Z feigning confusion over a system that has murdered millions, Hollywood forgives, over and over again.

You’ve heard of the Cat in the Hat? Welcome to “Jew in the Box.”

It sounds like some kind of sick joke, but it’s not.

There are 200,000 or so Jews living in Germany these days. At the Jewish Museum in Berlin, the powers that be actually decided it was a good idea to get a few of them to sit in a glass display case, one at a time, and answer questions.

It’s part of an exhibit called “The Whole Truth: Everything You Wanted to Know about Jews.” But everybody calls it “The Jew in the Box.” A different Jew is put on display every day, from four to six P.M.

The supposed point? To “help educate postwar generations.” You see,“few Germans born after World War II know any Jews or much about them.” Museum official Tina Luedecke: “A lot of our visitors don’t know any Jews and have questions they want to ask….With this exhibition we offer an opportunity for those people to know more about Jews and Jewish life.”

Of course. How else, after all, could they possibly find out about the subject?

Süddeutsche Zeitung provided an example of the kind of “education” provided by one of the Jews who volunteered to sit in the box. “There are Jews,” he told museumgoers, “who live on welfare. There are Jews who do not go to the synagogue to pray, but who do tai chi and yoga.”

Huh?

The reviewer for Die Welt, while admitting that he is not a fan of “Jew in the Box,” explained that’s it an effort to address the “tension” that German gentiles feel in regard to Jews.

Yeah – so was the Warsaw Ghetto.

Fox News says “Jew in the Box” is “a big hit” with the Germans. No kidding. Let’s just hope this doesn’t give them any ideas. If I were a Jew in Germany right now, I’d be keeping an eye out for people coming after me with large sheets of plexiglass and a tube of glue.

(Then again, come to think of it, whoever happens to be sitting in that box at any given moment may well be the safest Jew in the country. Given the way things are going in Europe these days, homemade plexiglass-box kits may well turn out to be this year’s hot Hanukkah gift.)

Aside from “Jew in the Box,” what else is included in “The Whole Truth”? According to Der Spiegel, “documents, photos, wall texts, installations, including movies, TV shows, comics,” and more. One highlight: a game called “Jew or Not?” that’s right out of the Howard Stern Show. Museumgoers are presented with photos of Charlie Chaplin, Justin Bieber, Bob Dylan, Marilyn Monroe, and other celebrities, and invited to guess whether they’re Jewish or gentile.

Is this how they trained the Gestapo?

At You Tube, you can watch an unbearably cutesy promotional trailer for “The Whole Truth.” Clearly, the goal here is to “educate” through whimsy. As the museum’s website puts it, the exhibit’s approach is “evenhanded and witty.” Program Director Cilly Kugelmann told one reporter: “An exhibition can sometimes be light and playful.” Yep, that’s German museums for you – always going for the light touch.

I was curious to hear what Tuvia Tenenbom, author of I Sleep in Hitler’s Room: An American Jew Visits Germany (currently a top German bestseller) would have to say about “Jew in the Box,” so I sent him a link to the Fox News story. His response was unambiguous: it’s “degrading, childish, stupid, sick,” the work of “people of no spine, no self-respect and no honor,” an “example of ‘apologetic’ Jews” who, “instead of attacking anti-Semitism head on…try to ‘understand’ it, by going the extra mile of ‘Let me show you a Jew.’”

Bingo.

If I Sleep in Hitler’s Room has been so successful in Germany, Tuvia suggested, it’s because it “takes an exact opposite direction; it tells the non-Jewish German straight in his/her face: You are an anti-Semite and there’s no way on earth you could justify it. And the German respects this direct talk.” Tuvia further pointed out that the Nazis “had this idea of putting Jews in a museum as exhibits; strange that these Jews make it a reality.”

Strange indeed. The folks at the Jewish Museum have provided yet another affirmation – as if we needed any – that, whatever the sickness is that’s afflicted so many Europeans for so many centuries when it comes to Jews, it’s still there.

In spades.

And it’s even infected some European Jews – at least those who gave the go-ahead to “Jew in the Box.”

Stepping into the world behind the Iron Curtain.

Recently I attended a private fundraising event at the Wende Museum in Culver City in the Los Angeles area. The Wende website describes it as “a collections-based research and education institute that preserves Cold War artifacts and history, making resources available to scholars and applying historical lessons of the past to the present.” A Cold War museum in the heart of the entertainment world – who knew?

Incorporated in Los Angeles ten years ago, the Wende was founded by young historian Justinian “Justin” Jampol to address the rampant destruction of Cold War artifacts in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union in the years following the fall of the Berlin Wall (wende is German for “turning point,” a phrase often used to refer to that historic event and the subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union). “Evidence of this critical period in world history is quickly disappearing,” said Jampol. So he made it his mission to collect and preserve that evidence.

The result is an amazing collection of over 70,000 artifacts, archives and personal histories from Communist-era Eastern Europe, including furniture, paintings, sculptures, posters, flags, signs, political propaganda, clothing, tapestries, books, films, electronics, remnants of Checkpoint Charlie, and the longest stretch of the original Berlin Wall outside of Germany. Nearly 75% of the objects in that collection originate from the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The Wende uses the history and culture of the GDR as a “lens through which to observe the larger cultural implications of Cold War-era Eastern European and the Soviet Union.”

Jampol led those of us at the fundraiser on a tour through the small display rooms and a crowded downstairs warehouse packed to the gills with these items. We were also shown through a nearby building which houses a collection of Cold War-era surveillance equipment. The collection gives off a palpable sense of the oppressive history to which it bears witness.

The Wende Museum won’t have to endure cramped quarters much longer. The city council has just given it a 75-year lease in a high-visibility building near Sony Studios in Culver City. Not only that, but the museum will get a higher profile as the subject of an upcoming book from the major art publisher Taschen. Wayne Ratkovich, Chair of The Wende Museum Board, notes that “the book will present more than just an exhaustive documentation of The Wende’s collection and the artifacts of the Cold War. It will provide a unique view of life behind the Iron Curtain.”

The Museum focuses on pivotal moments in Cold War history – “beginnings, endings and transformative events” – such as the formation of the Warsaw Pact, the fall of the Berlin Wall, German reunification, the collapse of the Soviet Union and the evolution of former Communist countries to members of a pan-European union. But the Wende also recognizes history on a more personal level, as preserved through oral histories and material remnants like family photo albums, scrapbooks and home movies, to “explore the layered realities of everyday life behind the Iron Curtain,” the “symbols, rituals, mass organizations and state-approved creative expression generated across the region,” and “the ways that official ideology was subverted, rejected and given new meaning in the private sphere.”

The Museum serves as an unparalleled educational resource not only for insight into the Eastern perspective of the Cold War, but the legacy of the Cold War and its contemporary relevance as well. Jampol is always searching for unique, interdisciplinary ways to engage audiences, such as urban landscape projects, online tools, exhibitions that provide access to shared knowledge, and a wiki-catalog that allows the public to contribute to the creation of artifacts and to upload videos and other content. In addition, “We host an annual conference or workshop for international scholars and students, loan materials to museum and institutions around the world, and produce and publish research projects,” he says.

Organized by journalist/historian David Stein, who also heads up an organization of counterculture conservatives called the Republican Party Animals (“this is not your father’s GOP”), the fundraising event featured the city council has just given it a 75-year lease on a high-visibility building by Downtown Culver City, near Sony Studios.talk radio host Larry Elder among the speakers, as well as the prolific journalist/novelist/screenwriter Michael Walsh, who happens to be on the museum’s Board of Directors. Walsh shared some of his personal experiences in Berlin while writing for Time magazine and other publications at that time (I have interviewed him about his thriller novels for FrontPage Mag here, and reviewed his recent Encounter broadside The People v. The Democratic Party here).

U.S. Navy Commander J.E. Dyer also spoke to the capacity crowd at the event. Having served in Naval Intelligence from 1983 through 2004, beginning her career under Ronald Reagan and finishing it serving in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, Commander Dyer has written for The Weekly Standard, HotAir, Commentary, and elsewhere, and is working on a book about Ronald Reagan, whom she quoted several times in her brief presentation. “Reagan saw the Cold War as a battle for the hearts and minds of people,” Dyer pointed out, and she quoted from his 1987 “tear down that wall” address about that struggle:

After these four decades there stands before the entire world one great and inescapable conclusion: freedom leads to prosperity. Freedom replaces the ancient hatreds among nations with comity and peace. Freedom is the victor.

And so it was. The Berlin Wall came down two years after that famous speech, because, to paraphrase another Dyer quote from Reagan’ 1982 address on arms reduction, he demonstrated the will to rebuild America’s strength and force the Soviets to back down.

The arrival in movie theaters of Red Dawn, a remake of the Cold War cult favorite of the same name, has given reviewers occasion to trot out a tired but favorite phrase of the left: “Cold War paranoia,” a dismissive term which implies that the threat of Soviet Communism was only a chimeric obsession of jingoistic conservatives. Justinian Jampol and his Cold War museum are working diligently to preserve the evidence of the War’s oppressive reality in Eastern Europe.
