A reflection on the suffering of the Cuban people under a vicious communist tyranny.

Crazy with fury I will stain my rifle red while slaughtering any enemy that falls in my hands! My nostrils dilate while savoring the acrid odor of gunpowder and blood. With the deaths of my enemies I prepare my being for the sacred fight and join the triumphant proletariat with a bestial howl.

—Che Guevara, Motorcycle Diaries

President Obama’s recent move to cozy up to Communist Cuba is a crucially important moment not just diplomatically, but as a moral one in regards to human rights, dignity and justice. As we witness a Radical-in-Chief throwing an economic lifeline to a barbaric tyranny, it is our duty and obligation to shine a light on the dark tragedy of the Cuban Gulag — and to reflect on the unspeakable suffering that Cubans have endured under Castro’s fascistic regime.

Until July 26, 2008, Fidel Castro had ruled Cuba with an iron grip for nearly five decades. On that July date in 2008, he stood to the side because of health problems and made his brother, Raul, de facto ruler. Raul officially replaced his brother as dictator on February 24, 2008; the regime has remained just as totalitarian as before and can, for obvious reasons, continue to be regarded and labelled as “Fidel Castro’s” regime.

Having seized power on January 1, 1959, Fidel Castro followed the tradition of Vladimir Lenin and immediately turned his country into a slave camp. Ever since, Cuba has distinguished itself as one of the most monstrous human-rights abusers in the world.

Half a million human beings have passed through Cuba’s Gulag. Since Cuba’s total population is only around eleven million, that gives Castro’s despotism the highest political incarceration rate per capita on earth. There have been more than fifteen thousand executions by firing squad. Torture has been institutionalized; myriad human-rights organizations have documented the regime’s use of electric shock, dark coffin-sized isolation cells, and beatings to punish “anti-socialist elements.” The Castro regime’s barbarity is best epitomized by the Camilo Cienfuegos plan, the program of horrors followed in the forced-labor camp on the Isle of Pines. Forced to work almost naked, prisoners were made to cut grass with their teeth and to sit in latrine trenches for long periods of time. Torture is routine.[i]

The horrifying experience of Armando Valladares, a Cuban poet who endured twenty-two years of torture and imprisonment for merely raising the issue of freedom, is a testament to the regime’s barbarity. Valladares’s memoir, Against All Hope, serves as Cuba’s version of Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago. Valladares recounts how prisoners were beaten with bayonets, electric cables, and truncheons. He tells how he and other prisoners were forced to take “baths” in human feces and urine.[ii]

Typical of the horror in Castro’s Gulag was the experience of Roberto López Chávez, one of Valladares’s prison friends. When López went on a hunger strike to protest the abuses in the prison, the guards withheld water from him until he became delirious, twisting on the floor and begging for something to drink. The guards then urinated in his mouth. He died the next day.[iii]

Since Castro’s death cult, like other leftist ideologies, believes that human blood purifies the earth—and since manifestations of grief affirm the reality of the individual, and thus are anathema to the totality—mourning for the departed became taboo. Thus, just like Mao’s China and Pol Pot’s Cambodia,[iv] so too Castro’s Cuba warned family members of murdered dissidents not to cry at their funerals.[v]

The Castro regime also has a long, grotesque record of torturing and murdering Americans. During the Vietnam War, Castro sent some of his henchmen to run the “Cuban Program” at the Cu Loc POW camp in Hanoi, which became known as “the Zoo.” Its primary objective was to determine how much physical and psychological agony a human being could withstand. The Cubans selected American POWs as their guinea pigs. A Cuban nicknamed “Fidel,” the main torturer at the Zoo, initiated his own personal reign of terror.[vi]

The ordeal of Lt. Col. Earl Cobeil, an F-105 pilot, illustrates the Nazi-like nature of the experiment. Among Fidel’s torture techniques were beatings and whippings over every part of his victim’s body, without remission.[vii] Former POW John Hubbell describes the scene as Fidel forced Cobeil into the cell of fellow POW Col. Jack Bomar:

The man [Cobeil] could barely walk; he shuffled slowly, painfully. His clothes were torn to shreds. He was bleeding everywhere, terribly swollen, and a dirty, yellowish black and purple from head to toe. The man’s head was down; he made no attempt to look at anyone. . . . He stood unmoving, his head down. Fidel smashed a fist into the man’s face, driving him against the wall. Then he was brought to the center of the room and made to get down onto his knees. Screaming in rage, Fidel took a length of black rubber hose from a guard and lashed it as hard as he could into the man’s face. The prisoner did not react; he did not cry out or even blink an eye. His failure to react seemed to fuel Fidel’s rage and again he whipped the rubber hose across the man’s face. . . . Again and again and again, a dozen times, Fidel smashed the man’s face with the hose. Not once did the fearsome abuse elicit the slightest response from the prisoner. . . . His body was ripped and torn everywhere; hell cuffs appeared almost to have severed the wrists, strap marks still wound around the arms all the way to the shoulders, slivers of bamboo were embedded in the bloodied shins and there were what appeared to be tread marks from the hose across the chest, back, and legs.[viii]

Earl Cobeil died as a result of Fidel’s torture.

Maj. James Kasler was another of Fidel’s victims, although he survived the treatment:

He [Fidel] deprived Kasler of water, wired his thumbs together, and flogged him until his “buttocks, lower back, and legs hung in shreds.” During one barbaric stretch he turned Cedric [another torturer] loose for three days with a rubber whip. . . . the PW [POW] was in a semi-coma and bleeding profusely with a ruptured eardrum, fractured rib, his face swollen and teeth broken so that he could not open his mouth, and his leg re-injured from attackers repeatedly kicking it.[ix]

The reign of terror against American POWs in Vietnam was just a reflection of Castro’s treatment of his own people. In addition to physical hardships even for those who don’t wind up in prison or labor camp, Cuba’s police state has denied Cubans any freedom at all. Cubans do not have the right to travel out of their country. They do not have the right of free association or the right to form political parties, independent unions, or religious or cultural organizations. The regime has outlawed free expression; it has consistently censored publications, radio, television, and film. There is a Committee for the Defense of the Cuban Revolution (CDR) for every single city block and every agricultural production unit. The CDR’s purpose is to monitor the affairs of every family and to report anything suspicious. A Cuban’s entire life is spent under the surveillance of his CDR, which controls everything from his food rations to his employment to his use of free time. A vicious racism against blacks accompanies this repression. In pre-Castro Cuba, blacks enjoyed upward social mobility and served in many government positions. In Castro’s Cuba, the jail population is 80 percent black, while the government hierarchy is 100 percent white.[x]

Cuban Communism follows Lenin’s and Stalin’s idea of “equality,” wherein members of the nomenklatura live like millionaires while ordinary Cubans live in utter poverty. The shelves in the stores are empty, and food is tightly rationed for the average citizen. Teachers and doctors drive taxis or work as waiters to support their families. Under the system of tourist apartheid, ordinary Cubans are not allowed inside the hotels designated for tourists and party functionaries. There are, of course, police inside every such hotel to arrest any unauthorized Cuban citizen who dares to enter.

The $5-billion-a-year Soviet subsidy that just barely kept the Cuban economy afloat during the Cold War is long gone. And notwithstanding the $110 billion that the Soviets pumped in over the decades, Cuba has become one of the poorest nations in the world. Its sugar, tobacco, and cattle industries were all major sources of exports in the pre-Castro era. Castro destroyed them all.[xi] Because of his belief in “socialism or death,” Cuba is now a beggar nation. Even Haitian refugees avoid Cuba.

Denied the right to vote under Castro, Cubans have voted with their feet. Pre-Castro Cuba had the highest per-capita immigration rate in the Western hemisphere. Under Castro, approximately two million Cuban citizens (out of eleven million) have escaped their country. Many have done so by floating on rafts or inner tubes in shark-infested waters. An estimated fifty thousand to eighty-seven thousand have lost their lives.[xii]

Not content to trust the sharks, Castro has sent helicopters to drop sandbags onto the rafts of would-be escapees, or just to gun them all down. Epitomizing this barbarity was the Tugboat Massacre of July 13, 1994, in which Castro ordered Cuban patrol boats to kill forty-one unarmed Cuban civilians—ten of them children—who were using an old wooden tugboat in their attempt to flee Cuba.[xiii]

These are the heart-breaking stories, and only a few among many, of the Cuban people who have suffered excruciating pain and agony under an evil tyranny that now, as it stands on its last legs, is having its life extended by an American president.

It is food for thought.

This week’s Glazov Gang was joined by Dr. Mark Christian, the President and Executive Director of the Global Faith Institute. He is the son and nephew of high ranking leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood in his home country of Egypt. A former Islamic Imam who converted from Islam to Christianity, he dedicated his life and work to the proposition that “the first victims of Islam are the Muslim themselves.”

Dr. Christian discussed Islam vs. Female Menstruation, pointing to the Islamic texts that dehumanize women for possessing fertility and spawning life (starts at 9:51 mark). The discussion occurred within the context of a dialogue about Islam’s Assault on Women’s Sexuality, in which Dr. Christian analyzed the misogynist texts of Islam and their earthly incarnations:

Don’t miss this week’s second episode with Dr. Bill Warner, a scientist who has studied Islam since 1970. He has used the scientific method in the study of Islamic texts and has made its doctrine easy to understand. As an example, he had produced a Koran that anyone can read and understand. Visit his site at politicalislam.com.

Dr. Warner joined the show to discuss Measuring Extremism in Islam, illuminating how Sharia compliance defines a way to measure civilizational “extremism” that goes beyond beheadings:

The biggest and angriest whiner wins.

In America there are two types of people; the oppressed and the oppressors.

The oppressed oppress the oppressors. And everyone including the oppressors agrees that this is only fair because the oppressors deserve to be oppressed. After all they are the oppressors.

They deserve to have the money they earn taken away. They deserve to be sent to the back of the line when applying to a college or looking for a job. They deserve to be beaten, robbed, raped, and taunted with slurs that would lead to national outrage if it were directed at the oppressed.

But they’re the oppressors. They deserve it.

If they complain, they deserve to have their speech censored. They are the oppressors. There’s no telling how much oppression they might dish out if the oppressed don’t keep them down.

That’s just life in the Victimocracy.

With one sob story too many, one whine too great, one more PBS special, special report about the plight of the oppressed and episode of Donahue, the country changed. The oppressors still had the democratic refuge of elections where they could by sheer numbers vote to retain their civil rights, but most of the other mechanisms of governance had ceased to be democratic and instead became victimocratic.

To have real power you had to be a victim or one of their protectors.

The Victimocracy is a lot like any other tyranny. In an aristocracy, power belongs to the nobles, in a theocracy, power belongs to the clergy, in a meritocracy, to anyone with skill and a work ethic.

But in a Victimocracy the biggest and angriest whiner wins.

In a Victimocracy, suffering is the exclusive privilege of the elites. No one else is allowed to suffer except them. No one else has ever been oppressed, has felt pain, been insulted, abused, degraded, enslaved and ground down into the dirt except the very people who are grinding you into the dirt now.

Victimhood is what entitles them to special privileges, it’s what ennobles them as a superior class of people and gives them the right to rule over you. They are the victims. What they say goes.

Victimization is the currency of their power. They have 1/16 Cherokee blood and high cheekbones. They are ‘triggered’ by loud noises and differing opinions. They spent their twenties “coming to terms” with something because of the lack of sitcom role models for their favorite sexual preferences or skin color. They are all survivors of something or other. They were activists and someone once said mean things to them. And if all else fails, they are deeply passionate about the plight of the oppressed.

Like, seriously.

Now stop oppressing them and educate yourself by recognizing their right to oppress you.

The Victimocracy is based around the superior moral power of their suffering. That is why no one else is allowed to suffer except them. Their convoluted theories of social justice eliminate the very possibility that the source of their exclusive moral power can be experienced by anyone else. They have strived to warp language around their political narcissism to define suffering as an experience unique to them.

They will assert, for example, that anti-white racism cannot exist because racism is not interpersonal but a structural product of power relations. Since everyone knows that America is a white male patriarchy, white people cannot be oppressed. They can only be the oppressors. Because of the patriarchy, men cannot be sexually assaulted. Christians cannot be religiously discriminated against. Americans can’t be blown up by Muslims. Any claim otherwise is a lie intended to oppress our oppressed oppressors.

Victimocrats are narcissistically infuriated by the suffering of others. Many tyrannies applied the whip and the lash, the prison cell and the gulag, but they at least left those they abused in possession of their suffering. The Victimocracy denies its victims even their suffering. Victimocrats reject the humanity of their victims as thinking and feeling beings with the same needs and boundaries as themselves.

The Victimocracy rations empathy. Empathy is the election of its system. The biggest victim wins and his suffering licenses his abuses. The bigger the victim, the bigger the abuses he is entitled to commit. If the empathy flows the wrong way, then power shifts and the entire system collapses. To take over a society, the Victimocrats must control its education and entertainment to structure its empathy flow their way.

Victimocrats must appear weak to gain power. They must always seem beleaguered, under siege, abused and threatened from a thousand different directions. They must be made to seem underdogs. Even if a Victimocrat sits in the White House, unilaterally dispensing with the lives and fortunes of a nation with phone and pen, he must remain a vulnerable victim of a terrible history of racism.

The Victimocrat must always be seen as a weak victim in need of rescue from those he oppresses.

Never able to argue a thing on its merits, the Victimocrats shift the debate to the moral high ground of their own oppression. It is impossible to disagree with them without somehow invoking stereotypes, flashbacks and the return of the white male patriarchy riding back into town on the last thing you said.

The Victimocrats are always in need of rescuing. No matter how much power they have, someone is always abusing them. And once that happens people of good will are called upon to condemn the abuse and to reinforce their power structure of the oppressed oppressor and the oppressive oppressed.

Victimocrats don’t win arguments. They convince others that they are entitled to avoid the argument.

In the Victimocracy the illusion of weakness is power. The weak are entitled to disproportionate power to protect themselves from the rest of us. The weaker they are, the more power they need. And the more power they get, the weaker they grow until we live under a tyranny of the absolutely powerless who wield absolute power.

Sometimes the oppressors wonder where their incredible power is supposed to be. They don’t have all that much money and no one seems to have taught them the secret handshake that will unlock the heavy iron doors of the heteronormative patriarchy where the patriarchal plutocrats sit around the table drinking the tears of Obama, Oprah and various Hollywood celebrities from human skulls.

Their oppressors tell them about their privilege, an invisible power to oppress others that they never even knew they had, but the privilege never really explains why they have to work harder, die sooner and be berated constantly for even existing. And they die and their oppressors take what they have.

There is no end to the oppression because the Victimocracy has to grow. America is always more bigoted than it was last year because the Victimocrats need more power this year. The more oppressed Americans become, the more they must be denounced for victimizing all the nice people running their lives and robbing them blind.

The Victimocracy rules by manufacturing an urgent crisis of oppression. It demands special measures to deal with the crisis. The temporary measures become permanent. Rolling them back would be an act of oppression. The permanent measures turn out to be insufficient. They must be redoubled.

Each Victimocrat victory is “a significant step forward” but there is always “more work to be done.”

And like all lust for power, the work never ends.

The oppressed want more. The oppressors make do with less. The protectors of the oppressed, who actually run the Victimocracy, announce that more speech must be censored, more wealth redistributed and more must be made unequal to achieve equality. A better world is around the corner, but first the one we have must be destroyed. Only when the balance shifts permanently and the new world is born, will the oppressors be allowed to see for the first time that they had been the oppressed all along.

And then it will be too late.

In this special episode, our brave and compassionate host takes a look at some real-life examples of microaggression and the deep harm such assaults can really do. See the video and transcript below:

TRANSCRIPT:

OUR MICRO-AGGRESSIVE UNIVERSITIES

I’m Andrew Klavan and this is the Revolting Truth.

Well, it’s back to school time and all across our country, college students are suffering from an insidious form of oppression called microaggressions. These are defined as commonplace verbal or, behavioral indignities… that communicate racist or sexist slights or insults…”

Microaggressions take place when, for instance, a woman sees a black male and clutches her purse more tightly making it too damn hard for him to snatch the thing away from her… or when two men hear a woman speaking and look at one another like this [makes a face] the universal sign language for “irrational woman.” So don’t let them see you do that because you know women. [makes the face]

To combat the tragedy of microagression, we here at the Revolting Truth have collected some real life MA experiences and submitted them to experts for commentary and advice. Trigger warning: these are genuine examples of microaggression and may cause you to experience some of the terrifying injustice of being a minority or female college student in today’s America.

All right, here’s one from the website, The MicroAgressions Project: [quote] “I wanted to get my nephew a My Little Pony coloring book since I like MLP… My brother, however, objected… I ended up getting my nephew a Batman one, but I don’t like Batman. It made me feel angry and sad that my brother is so entrenched in stereotypical gender roles.”

Wow. We submitted this sad story to Aran, an Iraqi Yazidi women, who sent this reply:

“Dear American College student. I am very sorry to hear of your My Little Pony incident. I perhaps can identify with some of your suffering as I was forced to watch while Islamists murdered my beloved husband and children before selling me into sexual slavery. Like you, I too felt forced into stereotypical gender roles. I hope your nephew enjoys his Batman.”

Here’s another tragic tale of micro-aggressive woe from a powerful performance piece called I Too Am Harvard: [quote] “I am a Harvard university student of mixed race, and people sometimes come right up to me and ask, ‘What are you?’”

We sent this description to our friend Lisa in the Central African Republic. Lisa gave this helpful reply:

“Dear Harvard student. How rude to be asked what race you are. It reminds me of the time I was hunted down by Muslim Seleka Rebels, dragged into the jungle and raped for hours before being set on fire. Even though I know how difficult it is there, I too sometimes dream of going to Harvard.”

Well, thanks to Lisa for that sympathetic reply. Here’s one more true life atrocity from an American female pre-med student. [quote] “My MCAT instructor keeps referring to the unnamed writers of certain passages with male pronouns. It made me feel stupid and unvalued…”

Our correspondent Fairly in Afghanistan responds… “Dear American pre-med student. How terrible to have to overcome such difficulty as male pronouns in getting to go to school. I too have suffered difficulties getting to school when men rode by on motorbikes and threw acid in my face. Of course this is nothing compared to male pronouns, but I do sort of miss my face sometimes. I used to be very pretty.”

Well, I hope this advice has been helpful to all those American college students suffering from microaggression. We here at the Revolting Truth understand that this sort of savage oppression can really harsh your buzz, especially if you already have a hangover and crabs.

I’m Andrew Klavan with the Revolting Truth.

A country on the precipice.

Last Thursday, Mozilla, the company that’s home to the web browser Firefox, forced the resignation of CEO Brendan Eich. What, precisely, had Eich done wrong? Back in 2008, Eich had donated $1,000 to the Proposition 8 effort backing traditional marriage in California. Dating website OKCupid posted a ban on Firefox traffic, issuing a message to Firefox users instead: “Those who seek to deny love and instead enforce misery, shame, and frustration are our enemies, and we wish them nothing but failure.” That ban reportedly prompted the action at Mozilla.

Of course, it was the people pushing for Eich’s ouster who were enforcing “misery, shame, and frustration.” Eich had never brought his politics into the workplace. Mozilla had no history of treating homosexuals differently, and no single instance of Eich doing so could be documented. Nonetheless, he had violated the dictates of the Thought Police. And thus he was ousted.

It’s a disturbing story, to be sure. But it’s also just the tip of the iceberg: Unfortunately, the same folks administering the private Thought Police would love to extend their control into the realm of government. These are not libertarians arguing for the right to hire and fire as you see fit in the private market. These are power brokers seeking to use whatever means necessary to quash opposition.

That’s why gay couples have sued photographers, bakeries and florist shops, attempting to shut them down if they refuse to cater to same-sex weddings. That’s why the Obama administration has attempted to fine businesses that do not wish to pay for health coverage they deem sinful. The underlying idea: If the left dislikes what you do, the left can compel you not to do it. As Kevin Williamson of National Review writes, American society is quickly morphing into a system governed by T.H. White’s totalitarian principle: “Everything not forbidden is compulsory.”

Freedom is secondary to the yays and nays of the governing few in this vision. Freedom is merely that which the government allows — and the government should only allow you to do the bidding of the left. If you, recognizing that sometimes people will take action with which you disagree, believe that government should stay out of people’s business, you must therefore be an advocate for discrimination and brutality. To allow Eich to work is to discriminate against gays. To allow religious businesses to reject contraceptive mandates is to push women into back alley abortions. Forget the notion of disagreeing with your opinion, but defending your right to say it — in the view of the leftist totalitarians, such a notion is inherently unworkable.

When fascism comes, it will come not with jackboots but with promises of a better world. The jackboots come later, when we’ve all been shamed into silence — when we’ve been taught that to allow that with which we disagree is to agree with it, and when we’ve accepted that the best method of preventing such disagreement is government power. We’re on the verge. All it will take is the silence of good people — people on all sides of the political aisle — who fall prey to the ultimate temptation in a republic: the temptation to force their values on others utilizing the machinery of government. We’re already more than halfway there.

Why is the international community silent about Iran's atrocities against women?

Only a few days after a United Nations Special Rapporteurs announcement on the situation of human rights in Iran, a woman was hanged by the Iranian regime in the Lorestan province, as the local media reported.

Even with the seemingly moderate President Hassan Rouhani leading the Islamic Republic of Iran, no action has been taken to address the discriminatory legal and social laws regarding women and young girls. Women are not allowed to exercise basic civil rights in Iran as well.

To be more specific, some of the laws in the Islamic Republic totally contradict internationally accepted human rights standards, reinforcing the superiority of men over women.

In verse 34 of the Quran, which is increasingly cited by Islamic officials, “men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth. So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband's] absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance – advise them; forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them.”

This verse has been applied to various areas of Iranian law. For example, when it comes to criminal law in the Islamic law of Iran, girls can be held criminally responsible at the ages of 8-9 years old, while criminal responsibility for boys begins at 15 years old. Why should girls be regarded as mature adults at 8-9 years old?

If a woman is killed in Iran, her blood money (money the family receives in compensation) is not equal to that of man. Women are worth half of that of a man. For criminal laws, according to Islamic Sharia law, sexual intercourse outside of marriage is punishable through the stoning of men and women. However, evidence indicates that women have been stoned at a greater proportion than men.

Honor killing is still practiced in provinces such as Eilam, Khuzestan, Kordestan, Fars, Lorestan, Azerbaijan, and Kermanshah, while the Iranian regime ignores these cases. In addition, a woman’s testimony in court is worth half that of a man’s testimony, based on criminal law.

In addition, while women are required to wear a Hijab, backed by Article 683, which states: “Those women that appear in the streets and public places without the Islamic hijab, shall be sentenced from ten days to two months’ imprisonment or fined from fifty thousand to five hundred thousand Rials,” there is no similar law and penal code for men.

Regarding family law, girls are legally allowed to marry at 8-9 years old, while boys must be at least 15 years old. Further, the father is the natural guardian who can marry off his daughter; even if the girl is an adult, she cannot marry someone on her own. Wives and daughters cannot leave the country without the official permission of their husbands or natural guardian. They also cannot obtain a passport without the consent of their husbands.

Muslim men can marry women from other religions (religions of the book), while women cannot marry a non-Muslim unless the man converts to Islam.

Also under family law, it goes without saying that the woman can only contract one marriage at one time, but there is no restriction on the number of wives a man can have. Though many follow Quranic verses that allow four wives, under the Shia Islamic belief system, a Mut’a (temporary marriage) can provide a loophole. In Mut’a, Muslim men are allowed contract an unlimited number of temporary marriages, for a fixed period of time.

Article 1105 of the Civil Code states, “In relations between husband and wife, the position of the head of the family exclusively belongs to the husband.”

One of the most appalling laws is Tamkin, meaning submission or obedience. To be more specific, Tamkin has been defined as the full accessibility and unhampered sexual availability of the woman to her husband. Sexual availability is considered a woman’s duty and a man’s right.

When it comes to employment laws, Article 1117 of the Civil Code indicates “The husband can prevent his wife from an occupation or technical profession which is incompatible with the family’s interests or the dignity of him or his wife.” Men can initiate a unilateral divorce.

In family law and inheritance rules, women only receive half as much as their brothers or other male relatives. Even if a husband dies, the wife will receive only one-eighth of the inheritance if she has a child. The law also prevents women from being judges.

The protection of every person’s human rights “without distinction of sex” are enshrined in Article 2 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and Article 2 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).

Hypocritically, while the Islamic Republic of Iran is a signatory of the ICCPR, and while there is a so-called moderate president in power, the discriminatory laws against women remain intact.

The litany of attacks is long: St. George Church, St. Mary’s Church, Good Shepherd’s Church, the Pentecostal Church, in Minya; St. Therese Church, Church of the Reformation, Church of the Apostle, Holy Revival Church, St. John’s Church, in Assiut; Church of the Virgin Mary in Cairo, St. Damiana Church, the Evangelical Church, and Joseph’s Church, in Fayoum; Church of the Archangel Michael, St. Saviors Anglican Church, the Greek Orthodox and Franciscan churches, in Suez; Fr. Maximus Church and St. George’s Church, in Alexandria

This is a repeat of history — history that has occurred since great tyrants of the Muslim faith have ruled over Egypt. By learning from history we can predict that a major massacre of the Copts is inevitable. Al-Hakim, a past tyrant who believed himself to be Allah reincarnated, and was called an antichrist by the Christians, massacred many of the faithful; he burned down the Egyptian city of Babylon for its Christianity, beheaded saints, seized the property of the followers of Christ and tore down thirty thousand churches. He forced Christians to wear a huge cross around their necks, Jews to put a round piece of wood around theirs, outlawed Christian holidays and burned any cross discovered. [1]

Years later, under a different ruler, a man named Nekam denied Christ to preserve himself, but once guilt seeped into his heart, and he realized that “whosoever will save his life shall lose it,” (Matthew 16:25) he confronted tyranny directly, threw away his Muslim garb and wore Christian dress, and openly proclaimed Christ. He was arrest and sentenced to death, and when his father came to visit and convince him to leave his zealotry, he had already professed who his Redeemer was, and was beheaded. [2]

The patriarch of Egypt in the early thirteenth century, Nicholas, had this to say on the persecution occurring in a letter to Pope Honorius in Rome:

“If any Christian church from any accident happens to fall, we dare not rebuild it; and for these fourteen years past each Christian in Egypt is compelled to pay a [Jizya] tax of one bezant and fourteen karabbas; and if he be poor, he is committed to prison and not set at liberty until he have paid the whole sum. There are so many Christians in this country that the Sultan derives from them a yearly revenue of one hundred thousand golden bezants. What further shall I say when Christians are employed for every unfit and sordid work, and are even compelled to clean the streets of the city?” [3]

On one afternoon in June 1320, mosques throughout Egypt were observing the Friday prayers, and in multiple congregations men arose and cried out “God [Allah] is great! God is great! O my brethren, let us go forth and destroy the churches!” In Cairo the same rallying cry was heard in three places at the same moment. It was a calculated plot, the conspirators understood the easily shaken conscious of the masses, and it worked sufficiently to rouse the mob to violence.

They attacked the church of Zehry, and not one stone of the sanctuary was left upon another. They then raided and ruined the church of St. Mena in the Hamra quarter. The mob broke through the Church of the Maiden, took out every nun and stripped them all naked, plundered the church of its valuables and then set it on fire. The same rabble destroyed another 56 churches and countless convents. A crowed rushed to the sultan and screamed, “Let there be no faith except that of Islam! God protect the faith of Mohammad! O thou commander of the faithful, help us against the infidels. No favour to the Christians!”

The sultan unwillingly acquiesced to the wants of the masses just as Pilot had done, and the crowed was ecstatic at such freedom given to them. The details of the violence is left only to our imagination, but we know that they ferociously reduced the Christians into servility, with any Christian caught wearing a white turban or riding a horse swiftly put to death. [4]

This mob violence continued on for years. One Christian was tortured for a whole week and then beheaded for denouncing the wickedness and anarchy of the Muslims. Churches were frequently leveled to the ground and Christian tombs were torn open and the bodies burnt. One multitude of jihadists even went so far as to make a large pit to throw Christian in. (5) One Christian named Gabriel was seized, and under the order of the sultan, tortured and forced to parade naked through the streets as an official screamed, “Thus shall it be done to every Christian in the employ of the Sultan.”

This type of violence is only going to occur again, but this era of persecution will be the ultimate one, unlike the past oppression. A holocaust of the Copts is coming, it is inexorable. But there is a great hope, for the prophet Isaiah prophesied:

In that day shall there be an altar to the LORD in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to the LORD. And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto the LORD of hosts in the land of Egypt: for they shall cry unto the LORD because of the oppressors, and he shall send them a saviour, and a great one, and he shall deliver them. (Isaiah 19:19-20)

The global religious genocide the West refuses to acknowledge.

As Egypt’s Islamists blame Christians for the ouster of Mohammed Morsi, anti-Christian violence has reached epidemic levels, with an estimated 82 churches across Egypt attacked and heavily damaged by Morsi supporters in a mere 48 hours.

Unfortunately, the persecution of Christians is nothing new in Egypt or other Muslim-majority countries. But thanks to the mainstream media, few Westerners understand the true scale or nature of the horrors involved.

As you read this, Christians around the world are being murdered, raped, plundered, abducted, forcibly converted to Islam, or otherwise oppressed by Muslims. Christians in Muslim-majority areas are some of the most vulnerable and horribly oppressed people on Earth; they live at the mercy of the mob and receive little or no protection from the police or other government institutions.

The reach of this silent tragedy is sweeping – a global religious genocide on “slow burn” with occasional conflagrations that make it into the mainstream media. There are an estimated 100 million persecuted Christians.

This massive crime is documented in shocking and painstaking detail in Raymond Ibrahim’s new book Crucified Again: Exposing Islam’s New War on Christians. The book is required reading for anyone who cares about religious freedom, human rights, and/or the survival of Christians in their ancestral lands.

In Crucified Again, Ibrahim methodically presents overwhelming evidence of Muslim persecution of Christians (documented with about 700 footnotes). His exhaustive, scholarly, and compelling study uses many news and historical sources, and statements by contemporary Muslim clerics. The evidentiary details are far too numerous to summarize here, but a few examples stand out.

Ibrahim explains the theological basis for Muslim persecution of Christians. He notes the Islamic belief that Koranic verses from later in Muhammad’s career abrogate contradictory verses from earlier. The hostile verses naming Christians “infidels” occur towards the end of his career, so they override any tolerance for Christians in earlier verses. Ibrahim writes: “The Koran’s final word on the fate of Christians and Jews is found in Koran 9:29 [where] Allah commands believers, [to fight them]…’until they pay the jizya with willing submission and feel themselves subdued.’”

Ibrahim cites the writing of renowned Muslim scholar Ibn Khaldun [1332-1406]:

[Jihad] is a religious duty, because of the universalism of the Muslim mission and the obligation to convert everybody to Islam either by persuasion or by force … The other religious groups did not have a universal mission, and the holy war was not a religious duty for them…But Islam is under obligation to gain power over other nations.

Ibrahim explains: “The Conditions of Omar…[details] exactly how [Christians and Jews] are to feel themselves subdued.” The laws applicable to “dhimmis” (non-Muslims treated as second-class citizens under Islamic hegemony) made life so miserable for Christians over the millennia that these rules gradually transformed thousands of miles of formerly Christian territory into what is today the “Arab world.” Ibrahim also highlights a tragic historical absurdity: many of the Muslims persecuting Christians today are themselves descendants of Christians who converted because of persecution.

Having established the theological basis for Muslim oppression of Christians, Ibrahim reviews the endless historical examples of these crimes. He cites one medieval Muslim historian reporting that “30,000 churches were burned or pillaged in Egypt and Syria alone” in just two years. During the Abbasid rule (in 936), “the Muslims in Jerusalem…burnt down the Church of the Resurrection [believed to be built atop the tomb of Christ].” Ibrahim notes the “1453 conquest of Constantinople by the Ottomans and the subsequent attack on…the Hagia Sophia and its transformation into a mosque.”

After reviewing the more notable examples from history, Ibrahim catalogs the extent to which such Muslim persecution of Christians continues today across the entire Muslim world, “from Afghanistan to Zanzibar” – regardless of race, ethnicity, culture, or language. Crucified Again details how these anti-Christian crimes are often incited by governments and/or religious leaders of Muslim countries. Ibrahim “broke news” in 2012 merely by translating into English that Saudi Arabia’s highest religious authority declared it “necessary to destroy all the churches” in the Arabian Peninsula. The shocking statement by Abdulaziz ibn Abdullah Al al-Sheikh, the Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, was widely reported by Arabic-language media, but the Western mainstream media avoided coverage of the outrage. As Ibrahim argues, the media willfully ignore such news because it contradicts their narrative that all Muslim violence is motivated by some socio-economic or political grievance.

But the West risks its own demise by ignoring four truths: 1) a hateful, absolutist ideology drives Islamist violence against non-Muslims; 2) sharia’s draconian penalties for apostasy and blasphemy maximize Muslim demographic growth because nobody can safely criticize or leave Islam (including those converted under duress); 3) sharia destroys the rights and freedoms cherished by the West; 4) sharia creates a Muslim monopoly on the marketplace of ideas – something antithetical to any free society. To survive, the West cannot let sharia laws take root in Muslim-majority communities of Europe and North America.

With documented examples, Crucified Again also debunks the myth of the “moderate” Muslim state. So-called “moderate” states like Turkey or the Maldives may not be as atrociously violent towards their Christian minorities as countries like Pakistan, Iraq, and Egypt, but they follow the same patterns of anti-Christian persecution and are far from Western standards when it comes to treating their non-Muslim minorities with equal rights, justice, and dignity.

Ibrahim has argued elsewhere that the Koran’s violent verses, unlike “their Old Testament counterparts…[use] language that transcends time and space, inciting believers to…slay nonbelievers today no less than yesterday.” According to Ibrahim, Old Testament violent verses are fundamentally different because they are merely a descriptive account of historical incidents – not a prescriptive exhortation to attack non-believers in the future.

Ibrahim shows how the Western media, academia, and the Obama administration have all whitewashed Muslim oppression of Christians and/or supported Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood to the point of enabling anti-Christian persecution and obscuring it from the public. Indeed, of Ibrahim’s 680+ cited news sources reporting on Muslim abuse of Christians, only about 6% were from the mainstream media. Biased media coverage of the Middle East deserves a book of its own, but to cite one powerful example (not mentioned in Crucified Again), consider how CBS’s “news” program, Sixty Minutes, defamed the only Mideast country where Christians are actually safe (Israel) while missing the real story of Mideast Christian persecution so thoroughly documented in Crucified Again.

Western passivity over the maltreatment of minority Christians has only encouraged Islamists to attack them for any perceived wrong by the West – whether it’s offensive cartoons, movies, or any other grievance. Worse, the apathetic West has forgotten that the Islamic prohibitions (against apostasy, blasphemy, and proselytism) used to justify Muslim oppression of Christians completely negate Western values like freedom of speech and religion.

Ibrahim elsewhere makes an excellent point about Muslim animus towards Israel: “if grievances…were really about justice and displaced Palestinians, Muslims – and their Western appeasers – would be aggrieved by the fact that millions of Christians are currently being displaced by Muslim invaders.” Indeed, the truer explanation for Muslim hostility towards Israel is that it’s the only non-Muslim state in the entire Middle East and North Africa. As long as Israel thrives as a strong, non-Muslim state, the Islamist mission of global jihad has failed in that region where Muslims are strongest. But if Israel were ever to fall, one can only imagine the genocide that would descend upon Israeli Jews – and the Israeli religious minorities sheltered in Israel (Christians, Bahá’ís, etc.).

Despite the grim signs for the West, it’s worth noting that there is a tiny but brave reform movement within Islam that should be robustly supported. Courageous humanists like Irshad Manji, who questions received doctrines with critical-thinking and a preference for tolerance over conquest, are the best hope for a reformed Islam that builds on its virtues, fixes its problems, and is at peace with itself (regarding the Sunni-Shia divide) and the non-Muslim world. Of course, anyone who reads Crucified Again will be unsurprised that Irshad Manji lives in the West.

Responding to the self-anointed representatives of the Religion of Peace.

I often receive a plentitude of messages from pro-Islam scholars – primarily those living in Western democratic societies and who are Western-educated – arguing that the real and true Islam is different from what I write or talk about. For example, one such recent debate surrounded my article and talks on the beheading of people based on their faith and political affiliation that occurred in Syria; the beheadings were committed in the name of Allah, Islam, and Sharia laws.

The main argument I receive from the Western-based, pro-Islam and Sharia law scholars is that Islam has a different and distinct characteristic. They provide me with a few statements from the Quran or Hadith (the Prophet Muhammad’s sayings) – statements from over a thousand-and-four-hundred years ago – suggesting that Islam prefers dialogue and reconciliation as an approach to conflict resolution. They also point out that those people who are committing these brutal acts are not real Muslims and are only choosing portions from the Quran and Hadith that justify committing murder.

First of all, it is worth shedding light on the intriguing phenomenon that the pro-Islam Western scholars appear to be oblivious to: the strategy and tactics that they are utilizing to support their argument bear exact resemblance to the approaches that the Islamist groups are applying. In other words, although the pro-Islam Western scholars argue that other groups – such as Jubhat Alnusra, Al-Qaeda and Hezbollah – are selecting specific statements and verses from the Quran and Hadith to legitimize their actions in the name of Allah, they themselves are also cherry picking the statements and verses that they like in order to depict Islam as the most attractive religion.

Putting aside these cherry-picking tactics and for a moment ignoring the fact that the most dominant and powerful aforementioned Islamist groups strongly believe that they are the real essence of Islam, the real fact remains that the religion of Islam inequitably provides a violent, gender-biased, and oppressive language and, thus, justification for those who desire to use it. Islam can provide the platform and statements to justify murder, beating women, and committing oppressive acts such as beheading. As a result, it provides the “rationale” for those Islamist groups that strongly believe they are the essence of Islam to justify their actions as the real Islam.

One example among hundreds of other examples is my father’s oppression. Whenever my Iranian father desired to use violence and to beat my Syrian mother, he would justify his actions through Allah, Muhammad, and the religion of Islam. He would quote verses from the Quran, for instance, “Men are in charge of women what Allah has given one over the other” (Quran 4:34), and “So righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in absence what Allah would have them guard. But those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance—advise them; forsake them in bed; and beat them” (Quran 3:34).

In addition, the scholars who advocate for Sharia and Islamic law rebuff those who criticize Islam as foreigners – Westerners, Christians or Jews who lack knowledge of Islam and who only desire to change the religion. I mentioned the previous example of my personal family story to explain that I am not from any foreign group, but rather come from an Islamic background.

Secondly, and more fundamentally, these pro-Islam scholars who reject even the most minor criticisms towards Islam are doing so in the safety and comforts of Western society. In these countries they enjoy freedom of speech, press, assembly, rule of law, democracy, social justice, high-quality education, fellowships, and social welfare. If they are so eager to be advocates of all nuances of Islam, why not live under Islamic and Sharia law rule of governance? If they so strongly criticize Western societies, why not experience life under the rule of Imams, Ayatollahs and clerics, such as in the Islamic Republic of Iran? I am not suggesting that I have a deeper insight on this matter due to the fact that I have lived in such societies; rather, I am recommending that these pro-Islam scholars try gaining first-hand experience by actually living in one of the dozens of countries that practice Islamic and Sharia law.

Thirdly, although these pro-Islam, Western-based scholars claim that they condemn the actions committed by the Islamists in Syria and other countries, they are in fact indirectly and directly contributing to the oppression, suppression, and brutality conducted under the name of Allah. The reason is that these scholars – instead of criticizing and attempting to reform Islamic and Sharia law – are perpetuating the status quo in Islamist-ruled societies and strengthening the ruling establishments by supporting their narratives.

This means that through the concerted attempts to project a picture of Islam as the most attractive and efficient religion in the world, they are in fact contributing to the cause of various Islamic establishments that are suppressing minorities, women, freedom of speech and the rule of law.

There is a fascinating story underway at the fringes of election-eve Israel. Israel’s radical Left has always been anti-democratic, and is showing increasingly fascist tendencies these days. One manifestation of this is that the Left tries at every opportunity to suppress the freedom of speech of non-leftists. It does so in a variety of ways, including legislation, court lawfare, suppression of pluralism in many of the country’s media, and so on.

After Yitzhak Rabin was assassinated by a radical nationalist religious law student in 1995, the leftist-controlled media led a McCarthyist campaign in Israel, claiming that the assassination was actually caused by the exercise of freedom of speech of non-leftists. The Left insisted that freedom of expression for “rightists” presents a clear and present danger of violence and murder and so must be criminalized. Much of the political establishment followed the lead of the leftist media McCarthyists, prosecuting “rightists” who dared to express their opinions. Later Rabbis have been dragged into police headquarters by the bushel and accused of “racism” because they endorsed a book some considered bigoted. In the mind of leftists, recommending to people that they read such a book is a crime, unless it is an anti-Semitic leftist book.

But the most amusing twist to all this is the growing number of complaints coming from the same anti-democratic leftists about how freedom of speech for leftists is supposedly under attack by Israeli conservatives! And they are increasingly pointing to the supposed surveillance and “spying” activities against them being carried out by critics of the far Left.

Several watchdog groups and web sites, led by Isracampus.com, keep tabs on and monitor the radical tenured Left in Israel, the extremists who are on the faculty at Israeli universities. They operate a bit like Campus Watch in the US. The monitoring consists of citing verbatim what the radicals write and say in public. The Israeli Left has long claimed that such monitoring is equivalent to creating “blacklists,” supposedly like the lists of people boycotted in the days of Joseph McCarthy. Of course a more accurate description of these exposure and monitoring efforts would be “citation.” The Left claims that these watchdogs are plotting to silence leftists. But the main way that they silence leftists is by giving broad publicity to what leftists publish and proclaim in their public lectures.

The claims by the Israeli Left about “blacklisting” are a bit amusing, given that many of these very same complainers have long promoted international blacklisting against all of Israel. This has been the “complaint” by the Fascist Left against Isracampus.com and the NGO Monitor group led by Professor Gerald Steinberg, both of which expose the political mischief and anti-Israel activities and publications of the Israeli far Left.

Another group that has been very successful in exposing the far Left has been the Zionist student movement Im Tirtzu, headed by Ronen Shoval. In the past few years Im Tirtzu has become the most important and popular student organization in Israel; it regularly holds counter-protests against the smaller communist party and Arab fascist student groups when they organize anti-Israel pro-terror demonstrations. The Im Tirtzu students have also (gasp!!) recorded what left-wing professors say in their classroom lectures and published these statements. Left-wing professors have accused the students of “spying” because they obtain course outlines and syllabi from propaganda courses operated by tenured leftists in the universities and publish their contents. In other words, the students are engaging in journalism. The far leftists insist this is really spying and McCarthyism.

Israeli universities, like many American universities, are crawling with far-leftist faculty members, and there are many departments in which no non-leftist opinion may be voiced and no pro-Israel or anti-Marxist instructor may teach. Academic standards have been trashed and hiring procedures corrupted in order to fill these departments with wall-to-wall radicals. The worst institutions engaged in these things are Ben Gurion University and Tel Aviv University, but the other schools are also at fault.

A few months back Shoval and his Im Tirtzu students filed a huge libel suit against a small gaggle of leftists for setting up a Facebook group accusing Im Tirtzu of being a “fascist organization” and accusing its leaders of being “fascists.” The suit is for 2.6 million shekels ($660,000) in Jerusalem District court. As part of their court action, Shoval and his people are also keeping tabs on the radical political activism of the lawyer representing the defendants, the ultra-leftist Michael Sfard. He is associated with Israel’s “Association for Civil Rights in Israel,” a far-leftist NGO group that has no interest in defending any civil rights for Jews or in defending freedom of speech. The ACRI has long been headed by the Stalinist writer Sami Michael. Student leader Shoval dared to provide information on Sfard’s activities to two newspapers. I guess that makes Shoval guilty of journalism.

Israel’s far-leftist daily Haaretz is roughly analogous to The Nation in the US. It has been covering the story of the “spying” on Sfard in detail, which is a bit amusing because one of the defendants in the libel action is herself a Haaretz writer and editor. Haaretz even cites the claim by one of the far-leftist defendants that reporting what leftist NGOs do is a form of terrorism.

In that story, the paper cites the student leader as proudly admitting collecting a dossier on the political extremism of Sfard.

It writes:

When asked by Sfard what methods were used to uncover such anti-Zionism, Shoval said: “We read the publications and listen to the claims and look at the motives people talk about, and then we reach conclusions.” When asked if Im Tirtzu had ever used material collected by private investigators, Shoval said: “Definitely.” In response to a question that the organization had used documents obtained from Sfard’s office, Shoval replied, “We see you as someone who is consistently involved in harming the State of Israel. Your ideological rejectionism from [your time in the] army has continued until now, in providing your services to organizations that consistently persecute IDF soldiers and identify Zionism as racism.

Sfard is claiming that documents about his political activities were stolen from the ACRI offices and leaked to the press. There is no evidence that these were taken in any sort of Watergate-like incursion, and, even if they were, there is no evidence that the Im Tirtzu students were involved. But the very same radicals who have always claimed that Daniel Ellsberg’s espionage was the highest form of patriotism and that the Wikileaks people are the world’s greatest heroes are suddenly aghast at the leaks to the press about the political activities of Israel’s far Leftists.

Of the two newspapers who used the leaked materials, the spokesman for one of them (Israel Hayom) said: “The newspaper acted according to the principles of the law.” The other newspaper, Makor Rishon, said they had no stolen documents and did not send “reporters or ‘plumbers,’ like in the Watergate affair, and of course we have not stolen any documents. We received the documents and cannot reveal their source, as is accepted here.”

This is just the tip of the oppressive iceberg to suppress the radical Left, screams Haaretz. In an op-ed by its educational reporter this week, it points to a long litany of supposedly anti-democratic initiatives by the Israeli Right. First there was a petition to bar an Arab woman from running for the parliament just because she had herself engaged in terrorism and violent attacks against Israeli soldiers. Never mind that the Supreme Court foolishly overruled the initiative and let her run. Then there was the case of the “boycott” of a leftist professor at Tel Aviv University by Benjamin Netanyahu. She was “boycotted” in the sense that Netanyahu declined to invite her to attend a state reception with the German Prime Minister which she wished to attend. Then there was the case of a radical leftist who was pushed into an archives job from his research position in the parliament because he insisted on filling all his reports with his far-leftist opinions. Also a bureaucrat in the Ministry of Education was canned for churning out textbooks for use in civics classrooms that were filled with anti-Israel bias and historic revisionism based on Arab pseudo-history. And to top it all off, the Minister of Education called for closing down the Department of Politics at Ben Gurion University simply because the department refuses to allow any conservative or pro-Israel opinion to be voiced, because its courses are anti-Israel and Marxist indoctrinations, because its academic standards are so awful that an international panel of experts demanded that the department be shut down altogether, and because it harasses students if they dare to question the extremist indoctrinations by the professors.

So from all the above, you can see that the complaints by the Left that freedom of speech and pluralism are under a McCarthyist assault in Israel are completely valid. The only problem is that the assault against freedom and democracy is coming from the Fascist Left.

The prominent journalist Sven Egil Omdal, a former leader of the Norwegian Union of Journalists, has warned in the regional daily Stavanger Aftenblad against my dangerous critical views on Islam. At the same time, he thinks we should look into economic factors and social exclusion of Muslim immigrants in order to explain radicalization in ghettos, and not focus on Islamic ideas or culture. According to such socialist thinking, jihad is seen as caused by European and Western xenophobia, oppression and racism rather than the Islamic mentality.

For some strange reason, this theory has never been able to explain why Islamic expansionist aggression started about a thousand years before European colonialism, and long before the USA or Israel existed as countries.

Symptomatically, Mr. Omdal criticized the supposedly inhumane acts of American special forces who in 2011 killed the Islamic terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, after his terror network had murdered thousands of American civilians. At the same time, Omdal does not hesitate in defining society’s “enemies” as Islamophobes on the political Right, who in his view held “responsibility” for creating the basis for Breivik’s massacre.

If you follow this line of thinking, Islamic terrorism is caused by poverty and oppression, whereas non-Muslim terrorism is caused by evil ideologies. But is this view correct? Does Islamic terrorism really have absolutely nothing to do with Islamic doctrines? And if we are to look for underlying problems causing radicalization in the Islamic world, should we not also look at real problems causing potential radicalization in the West?

Omdal has previously compared Israel to Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. No, not Israel’s jihadist enemies in Iran or elsewhere who openly advocate genocide, nor Hamas which does the same, but rather Israelis who might conceivably defend themselves against those who publicly brag about their nation’s coming annihilation.

Serious studies have time and again documented that Islamic jihadist terrorists often have above average education and income. In 2011, a secret MI5 file was leaked which indicated that two-thirds of terror suspects in Britain are from middle-class backgrounds. Those who become suicide bombers are often highly educated. The security service stated that most Islamic terrorists and suicide bombers have a large number of friends.

Marc Sageman, a forensic psychiatrist, had conducted an earlier analysis of 500 members of the Islamic terror organization al-Qaida which revealed that the majority of them were well-educated, upwardly mobile men in their twenties from a middle-class background. The recruits also tended to come from the wealthier Arab countries. The common stereotype of Islamic terrorism as a product of poor men is clearly wrong, Sageman indicated.

The perpetrators of the attacks on September 11th 2001 that killed thousands of unarmed civilians largely came from Saudi Arabia, a very wealthy oil country which has never been under European colonial rule but is itself the cradle of one of the world’s most brutal imperial traditions, as noted by the gifted author V. S. Naipaul.

Mohamed Atta has been identified by the FBI as the pilot of American Airlines Flight 11, the first plane to crash into the World Trade Center in New York City during the September 11, 2001 attacks. Atta was trained as an architect and pursued a master’s degree in city planning at the Hamburg University of Technology. As a student in Germany, he was described as quiet and polite. This strategy of using religious deception, smiling at the infidels while plotting to kill them, is a common feature of many would-be Jihadists in Western countries.

The medical doctor Bilal Abdullah, a British-born Muslim of Iraqi descent, has been sentenced to life in prison for plans to use car bombs to murder as many people as possible in London, England and Glasgow, Scotland. He is said to be a “religious extremist and a bigot” who promotes violent Jihad against non-Muslims. This does not square with the Hippocratic Oath of “never do harm to anyone,” but then Hippocrates was a part of the European tradition.

The Koran (3:110) teaches Muslims – Arabs in particular – that they are “the best of peoples,” far better than non-Muslims in every conceivable way. They have a God-given right to impose their rule on the rest of humanity, by force of necessary. Their claim to be “hurt” is mainly the complaint of a people who see themselves as a divinely ordained “master race” who have been tricked out of their rightful rule and privileges solely because of scheming Jews, Crusaders, Americans, Europeans, Hindus or other evil infidels.

Muslims make up a vastly disproportionate number of the inmates in many Western jails. That is not because of “discrimination.” The free-thinking psychologist and writer Nicolai Sennels, who worked with Muslims in Denmark that had been convicted of serious crimes, reports how these inmates rarely feel any personal responsibility for what they have done. They usually see themselves as innocent victims of outside forces. In their own minds, these Muslims never do anything wrong, but many wrongs are imposed upon them by others.

The TV host, columnist and author Michael Coren covered a 9/11 vigil in Toronto, Canada, in 2012. At the same time, Muslim protesters clashed with the police in Sydney, Australia during a wave of unrest against an obscure movie that mocked Islam. They carried slogans such as “Behead all those who insult the Prophet.”

As Coren remarked about this threatening Muslim crowd, “We are supposed to be free to speak our minds. The issue here is not the movie but the Islamic reaction to the movie. Remember, the same week this tiny film was made public, the internationally celebrated Venice Film Festival gave an award to a movie showing a naked woman masturbating with a crucifix. The Christian response was an e-mail.” Most of these Muslims seemed to have the latest iPhones, iPads or other electronic gadgets. Coren did not see any signs of poverty among them.

As the author Ibn Warraq has repeatedly stated, the root cause of Islamic terrorism is Islam’s teachings and the example of Muhammad and his companions as described in traditional sources. Those who claim that Islamic terrorism is caused by poverty and oppression are parroting Marxist dogma, where violence is caused by “oppression.”

Sven Egil Omdal was suspiciously quiet during the international Islamic riots in September 2012, with their attacks on Western embassies and calls for beheading those who insult Islam. Was all of this really caused by poverty? By contrast, the same month he interviewed the pro-multicultural author Carsten Jensen in Denmark about where to put the external “responsibility” for Breivik’s ideas. As was to be expected, hardly a single critical word was uttered about the largest and fastest mass migrations in recorded human history. Instead, the two men focused only on the supposedly irrational and hateful reaction of native Europeans against their own displacement.

Interestingly, although he was normally against the death penalty, Carsten Jensen was of the opinion that he might be willing to reconsider his stance in the exceptional individual case of Breivik, given the latter’s immense cruelty and total lack of remorse. Yet, although he considered ABB to be unique, the author indicated that he grew out of a fertile soil of right-wing extremism and the hateful, anti-Islamic xenophobia of the Danish People’s Party, whose long-time leader Pia Kjærsgaard in 2012 stepped down in favor of Kristian Thulesen Dahl.

It is unclear what kind of “hate” the DPP has been spreading, however. The party’s former MP Søren Krarup has been one of the country’s sharpest conservative and Christian intellectuals for decades. The priest Jesper Langballe, who was Member of Parliament for the DPP from 2001 to 2011, is renowned for talking about serious subjects with a great sense of humor. Should any mention of problems caused by mass immigration be a social taboo?

Yet unless these organizations are willing to engage in a thorough self-criticism and change their ways, Carsten Jensen averred that groups which are critical of Islam, multiculturalism and mass immigration “share a responsibility” for the massacre at Utøya with Breivik. The author took it for granted that Anders Behring Breivik is a rational but evil person who committed his atrocities based on a certain ideological world view.

This is not beyond dispute. It is conceivable that Breivik’s twisted, unbalanced and borderline insane mind, filled with medieval knights and a strange fetish for self-made uniforms, was at least as much motivated by family issues and problems in his private life, which he wrapped in an ideological mantle to justify his misdeeds.

However, if we assume that Anders Behring Breivik was at least partly affected by the undercurrents of fear and quiet anger that are present in nearly all Western nations now, which seems likely, then we must also admit that these undercurrents have been fueled by the policies of mass immigration promoted for decades by the Western ruling elites, including opinion-shapers such as Sven Egil Omdal and Carsten Jensen in the mass media.

Consequently, one might claim with considerable justification that Breivik’s radicalization was to some extent facilitated by the extreme immigration policies promoted by the ruling multicultural establishment. If that is indeed the case then Western multiculturalists, too, need to engage in some healthy self-criticism regarding the rapidly rising tensions caused by their dangerous polices and failed ideological experiments.

Imagine that the president overnight decreed that women must cover themselves from head to toe lest they be imprisoned. Imagine suddenly a new brigade of morality police appears on the scene to patrol for unacceptable behavior, jailing and beating transgressors on sight. Imagine a new regime of rules that sentenced women defending themselves against rape to death. This is the world that Nazanin Afshin-Jam, a Canadian-Iranian human rights activist, and her family left following the Islamic revolution in Iran. Below, Afshin-Jam recounts her amazing story and successful campaigns to save lives in the Islamic Republic of Iran through her own individual initiative. Addressing an audience at the 2011 TEDx event in Vancouver, Canada, Afshin-Jam reveals her hope to one day create an international body of justice for the victims of human rights abuses in the world.

Tariq Ramadan "contextualizes" the Palestinian and Muslim Brotherhood's yearning for a Mideast Holocaust.

On Sunday, C-Span ran the Cooper Union panel with Tariq Ramadan, grandson of the founder of the Muslim Brotherhood and — until recently — banned from America for funding terrorists and working with their networks. On the platform were Slate’s Jacob Weisberg, the moderator, and George Packer (who provided the only illuminating moment in the proceedings) and Joan Wallach Scott, a notorious academic enabler of Ramadan and terrorist Sami al-Arian, and a professor at Princeton’s Institute for Advanced Study. Also present was Dalia Mogahed, a Muslim version of Scott. Ramadan claimed to be an all-American democrat (but kept attacking the Iraq war which brought democracy to millions of Muslims as “illegal”).

Mogahed and Scott deflected questions from Weisberg about the oppression of women in Islam — an international scandal — by 1) talking about economic inequality and joblessness among Muslim immigrants in Europe and 2) in Scott’s case — the oppression of women in Catholicism. This was an instance of immoral equivalence brought to a new low. Weisberg asked Ramadan about his revealing statement that there should be a “moratorium” on the stoning of women for alleged infidelity. Here Ramadan introduced a word he was to use throughout the evening: “contextualization” — the verbal equivalent of a fog machine. If you contextualized “stoning” you could forget the barbarity of it and see it as a cultural oddity which needed to be reconsidered. Wallach Scott, professing to be a “feminist,” thought the moratorium to be a good idea, and in doing so raised progressive hypocrisy to new levels.

The discussion got really interesting when Packer brought up the fact that Ramadan’s grandfather had declared the Hitlerite grand mufti of Jerusalem — the father of Palestinian nationalism — a hero and helped to save him from being tried as a war criminal after the Holocaust was over. Ramadan contextualized this, saying his grandfather would not support a Nazi except as a nationalist and only supported the mufti because he opposed Zionism. Precisely. “Kill the Jews” is what the Palestinian cause and the Muslim Brotherhood are about, and why both seek to destroy the only democracy in the Middle East and the only state that is tolerant towards others. Packer held his ground manfully but neglected to mention that Ramadan’s grandfather had Mein Kampf translated into Arabic in the thirties and that the war against Israel in the hands of the Brotherhood and its offspring Hamas is a war against the Jews in precisely the sense that the Nazis conducted its precursor. In fact, the mufti — who is the George Washington of the Palestinian cause — was conducting a genocidal campaign against the Jews in the Twenties before Hitler got his going. Joan Wallach Scott supported Ramadan’s contextualization throughout, even when it came to rationalizing the murder of her own people.

When it was over I took a shower.

Leftist and Muslim thugs shut down discourse on campus.

Of the many intellectual perversions currently taking root on college campuses, perhaps none is more contradictory to what should be one of higher education’s core values than the suppression of free speech. With alarming regularity, speakers are shouted down, booed, jeered, and barrage with vitriol, all at the hands of groups who give lip service the notion of academic free speech, and who demand it when their speech is at issue, but have no interest in listening to, or letting others listen to, ideas that contradict their own world view.

Coincidentally, just recently two Israeli officials, Deputy Foreign Minister Daniel Ayalon and ambassador to the United States Michael Oren had the unpleasant experience of confronting virulent anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian Muslim students whose ideology on academic debate seems to be “free speech for me, but not for thee.”

Ayalon, who spoke at Oxford University, had his speech interrupted by several audience members, including one who yelled incessantly and called Ayalon a “racist” and “a war criminal” while waving a Palestinian flag, another student who loudly read passages of the incendiary Goldstone Report, calls from one charming scholar to “slaughter the Jews,” the intrusion of a third student who remained standing for the entire balance of the lecture while she hurled anti-Israel invective, and another radical brat who threatened to Ayalon that “we will do to you what we did to Milosevic.”

The genteel, soft-spoken Ambassador Oren did not fare much better during his visit to the University of California at Irvine, a notorious hotbed of radical anti-Israelism by Muslim students. During the aborted speech to some 500 people about U.S.-Israeli relations, which was loudly interrupted ten times, boorish hecklers screamed over Oren’s talk such profound observations as “Michael Oren, propagating murder is not an expression of free speech,” “I accuse you of murder,” “How many Palestinians have you killed?” and “Israel is a murderer.” Even after he took a 20-minute recess to let the crowd cool off and regain its collective composure, he returned to the podium with more volleys of invective, shouting, and speech-stopping bombast from the Muslim students, eleven of whom―eight from UC-Irvine (including the Muslim Student Union’s president) and three from UC Riverside—were eventually escorted out of the hall and arrested.

The fact that UC-I’s habitually craven administrators, led by feckless Chancellor Michael Drake, were even motivated enough by the students’ errant behavior to have them ejected from the event is a promising sign. While the University has always claimed to be dedicated to encouraging debate and scholarly inquiry by letting the Muslim Student Union mount annual hate-fests to demonize and vilify Israel and Jews, the MSU has effectively hijacked all discussion of the Middle East on campus, and their odious events are not platforms at which opposing views are aired and discussed. In fact, these so-called pro-Palestinians seem to care very little about the actual self-determination and state building of the hapless Palestinians. As is frequently the case when speaking about the Israeli/Arab conflict, the discussion often glosses over the real problems of Palestinian culture, politics, and society (including its cult of death), and targets all criticism on the perceived defects of Israel, Zionism, and Jewish power.

Ambassador Oren is hardly what even his staunchest critics could consider an Islamophobe or even a rabid Zionist, perfectly willing to trample the Palestinian’s aspirations for their putative state. A Columbia and Princeton graduate, former Georgetown professor and fellow at Jerusalem’s Shalem Center, the American-born Oren is also the author of two seminal books on the Middle East, Six Days of War: June 1967 and the Making of the Modern Middle East and Power, Faith and Fantasy: America in the Middle East: 1776 to the Present, all of which clearly make him at least as qualified to speak about the Israeli/Palestinian situation as the raucous, boorish students who had decided, in advance of his UC-I appearance, that Oren was morally unfit to even appear on their campus.

This notion—that pro-Israel speakers and scholars do not even deserve, on a moral or intellectual basis, an opportunity to participate in scholarly debate is a very dangerous one, even if it comes from tendentious students. It starts with the assumption that Israel, because of its perceived moral defects and its oppression of the hapless Palestinians and the theft of their lands, does not even have the right to participate in intellectual debate, that academic free speech in Israel’s case can be modified and is not absolute. And while Muslim students and other campus radicals have, both at UC-I and other college campuses, seen to it that speech that they do not approve of, spoken by people with whom they disagree, is shut down with the “heckler’s veto,” they have never missed an opportunity to invite their own stable of slimy, anti-Israel, anti-American speakers. What is more, these speakers have never been shouted down, chased away, or jeered by those students and professors who might well have found their views to be repellant.

A closer look at the ideas tossed about by some of the MSU’s invited guests suggests both the moral incoherence and intellectual debasement that characterizes the human output of these events. Amir-Abdel Malik-Ali, for instance, former Nation of Islam member, convert to Islam, and cheerleader for Hamas and Hezbollah, has been a ubiquitous, poisonous presence on the Irvine campus who never hesitates to castigate Israel, Zionists, Jewish power, and Jews themselves as he weaves incoherent, hallucinatory conspiracies about the Middle East and the West. Speaking from a podium with an execrable banner reading “Israel, the 4th Reich” in May 2006, Malik-Ali referred to Jews as “new Nazis” and “a bunch of straight-up punks.” “The truth of the matter is your days are numbered,” he admonished Jews everywhere. “We will fight you. We will fight you until we are either martyred or until we are victorious.”

At a 2008 event, dubbed “Never Again? The Palestinian Holocaust,” Malik-Ali was at his hateful best once again, standing behind a banner that read “Death to Apartheid“ while he wildly contended that “The Islamic revival should only be feared by those who support imperialism, colonialism, racism, occupation . . . Groups like Hamas and Hezbollah” are not the real terrorists at all, he proclaimed. No, the actual “terrorists are the United States; the terrorists are Israel!”

Another odious guest speaker who regularly makes appearances on the hate-fest circuit is Muhammad al-Asi, an anti-Semitic, anti-America Muslim activist from Washington, DC who has written, among other notorious ideas, that “The Israeli Zionist are [sic] the true and legitimate object of liquidation.” At a MSU-sponsored event in February 2008, “From Auschwitz to Gaza: The Politics of Genocide,” which repulsively tried to draw parallels between the Holocaust and Hamas-controlled Gaza, al-Asi was a featured speaker. In his speech, he repeated the canard of Jewish control of world politics, suggesting that “Zionists or what some people call the Jewish lobby” had reduced the United States to playing “second fiddle to the Israeli government.”

Just months after 9/11, al-Asi had similar invective to utter towards Jews, in the context of Israeli oppression of Palestinians. Using his favorite image of the ghetto when describing Jews, he observed that “We have a psychosis in the Jewish community that is unable to co-exist equally and brotherly [sic] with other human beings. You can take a Jew out of the ghetto, but you can’t take the ghetto out of the Jew, and this has been demonstrated time and time again in Occupied Palestine.”

If ever there were utterances which deserved to be shouted down and drowned out with reason and fact, al-Asi’s hallucinatory ravings probably would qualify. But despite continual complaints from the Orange County Task Force on Anti-Semitism and other concerned UC-I stakeholders, the tenor and frequency of speakers at the MSU’s lurid hate-fests continue unabated, seemingly with the tacit approval of the university administration. The same Muslim students who could not abide even the presence of Israel’s ambassador to the United States, listen rapturously to the loathsome bloviating of Malik Ali, al-Asi, Norman Finkelstein, Ward Churchill, and any other ideological thug who have come to UC-I’s campus with the purpose of vilifying Israel and defaming Jews.

It is, of course, the MSU’s choice to hear whatever opinions they wish from whichever speakers to whom they choose to listen. What is not their choice, however, is to be able to prevent other views from being heard on campus, particularly the complex and thorny Israeli/Palestinian conversation, merely because pro-Palestinian students have decided that they will not recognize the very existence or legitimacy of a sovereign nation, Israel, nor hear that ideas of individuals who are able to defend it and explain the Israeli side of the argument. University officials must repeatedly make clear that campuses must allow many different views and perspectives, and should not try to exclude unpopular thought from being heard in the proverbial marketplace of ideas.

Concern for the long-suffering Palestinians may be a commendable effort, but the exclusion and demonization of Israeli speakers and government officials from the academic community as a tool for seeking social justice for that one group “represents a profound betrayal of the cardinal principle of intellectual endeavor,” observed commentator Melanie Phillips, “which is freedom of speech and debate,” something universities should never stop diligently defending. And they should certainly never abandon that pursuit to the baleful whining of ideological bullies intent on suppressing the views of others.

Richard L. Cravatts, Ph.D., director of Boston University’s Program in Publishing, just finished a book about the world-wide assault on Israel taking place on college campuses, “Genocidal Liberalism: The University’s Jihad Against Israel.”

It’s Groundhog Day! If you haven’t seen the movie, watch the trailer first.

And now here is today’s Jihad Watch news:

1. Some jihadis somewhere will blow something up and kill some people.
2. In their public statements they will quote Qur’an, invoke Muhammad, and explain that they did it all to advance Islam.
3. Mainstream media stories about the attack will never mention Islam, or Jihad, and will speculate about the desperate poverty and political oppression that led this group to carry out this attack.
4. Obama will lament this “tragedy,” call the attackers “isolated extremists,” and announce a new U.S. aid package for the area they come from, again without ever mentioning Islam or jihad, except to praise the great and noble religion of Islam.
5. I will post the attackers’ public statements here at Jihad Watch.
6. Leftist and Islamic supremacist groups will see #5 and call me an Islamophobe and a bigot, without ever taking notice of #2.

Tune in again tomorrow, when:

Evangelical leftist Brian McLaren searches for “truth” in “Palestine.”

“Emergent Church” guru Brian McLaren is a key figure on the Evangelical Left who is trying shift Evangelicals, who are America’s most pro-Israel demographic, into a more neutralist stance. Currently, he is leading a delegation through Israel and “Palestine” to broadcast the sins of Israeli oppression against Palestinians by “listening, learning, thinking, observing, reflecting.” His blog is providing daily updates of his discoveries, all of which confirm his previously often declared bias against Israel.

“I hope you will start questioning what you think you know about the situation here,” McLaren warned on his blog recently, with the assumption that most readers are deceived by pro-Israel partiality. “I’ve been an avid reader on the subject for quite a while, but being here now, I see how many of my most basic assumptions were skewed from a lifetime of half-truths, unfair and imbalanced news, well-planned propaganda, and misinformation.”

McLaren, of course, used to be a more traditional, conservative Evangelical. So his emergence into the Evangelical Left in recent years, including the requisite negativity towards Israel, is part of an ongoing spiritual rebirth into which he invites his fellow Evangelicals. Of course, McLaren insists that he is not anti-Israel, and certainly not anti-Jewish. He simply wants to liberate both Palestinians and Jews from the enslaving mindset of the “occupation” that holds both peoples captive.

“The struggle here is about people being held in various forms bondage – both occupiers and the occupied each in their own ways, and everyone needs liberation,” McLaren explained. He is himself apparently one agent of that “liberation.” In his typical post-modern way, he further posits that none of the people in that region are really responsible for the strife and horrors. Rather, it is the “harmful ideologies and world views and narratives that rule and exert power in and through people’s lives” and “cause them to do terrible things they would never do in their right minds.” Indeed, he warned, that “when hateful and dehumanizing ideologies take control, both victimizers and victims are dehumanized.”

Of course, though McLaren wants to liberate everybody from their various spiritual/political blindness, he implies that most or all of the spiritual confusion comes from Jewish Israel and its Christian supporters. He is very concerned about Israeli “razor wire and segregation walls,” as part of the “ugliness of occupation.” But he is not as interested in the Palestinian and Islamist terror that generate Israel’s defenses. He helpfully included photos of graffiti art on the infamous security wall, and other blank slates, by left-wing British graffitist Bansky. One shows the Statue of Liberty pulling out her empty pockets, perhaps illustrating the bankruptcy of American capitalism, or America’s hoped for inability to back Israel. Another graffiti artwork shows a Palestinian girl searching an Israeli soldier, in a hoped for role reversal.

McLaren recited first hand from his West Bank visit “heart-shattering stories of Palestinians being arrested without cause, tortured, humiliated, re-arrested, re-tortured.” Amazingly, he has discovered a “lack of hatred” and a thirst for “non-violent” action among Palestinians, despite all the abuse from their Israeli “victimizers,” and the mischaracterizations from the purportedly pro-Israel U.S. media. Revealingly, McLaren learned that Palestinians do not want a “two-state solution” but instead desire to “live in peace with Israelis” and want “Jews, Muslims, and Christians to learn to live together as neighbors.” In other words, the Palestinians want the eradication of Jewish Israel and the creation of a new Palestinian and Islamic dominated state where, purportedly, Jews and Christians also could live, at least for a time. McLaren finds this discovery to be very “powerful” and encouraging.

“We in the US have been given a terribly false impression – from the media, from political leaders, and from many Christian and Jewish leaders as well,” McLaren incredulously recounted of the “quiet but gracious attitude” he found among Palestinians towards Israel. “All of us who are here in Palestine are now witnesses to realities we can’t be silent about in the future.”

One of McLaren’s fellow pilgrims is former journalist Greg Barrett, author of The Gospel of Father Joe: Revolutions & Revelations in the Slums of Bangkok. Maybe not quite as naïve as the rose-tinted McLaren, Barrett blogged that Palestinians graciously endure American tourists despite all the torments that America purportedly inflicts on them through Israel because “we help buoy a difficult economy.” But deep down, Palestinians are justifiably “tired of us and our elected officials who look the other way while an oppressed people is bullied, robbed and mocked.” Christian tourists have too long visited Bethlehem to see Christ’s birthplace while “we’ve failed to follow His teachings.”

Appropriately, Barrett cited a favorite social activist/philosopher for the Left: “Seeing the infamous Wall built by Israel to imprison the Palestinians, I was reminded of Saul Alinsky’s Rules for Radicals: A Practical Primer for Realistic Radicals. In it, Alinsky writes about ‘the rules pertaining to the ethics of means and ends.’ First among them is the belief that a person’s concern with the ethics of a social action correspond to one’s distance from the consequences of action or inaction.”

Perhaps Barrett should instead have cited Alinsky’s better known quote about left-wing polemics: “Pick the target, freeze it, personalize it, and polarize it.” McLaren’s Holy Land tour, whether deliberately or cluelessly, seems like just another Alinsky-inspired cause from the Religious and Evangelical Left, which are determined to demonize Israel and its U.S. ally, in pursuit of “liberation” for Palestinians. But this brand of “liberation” would result in the eventual eradication of Jewish Israel in favor of an Islamist dominated “Palestine,” where fellow-travelling Christians like Brian McLaren would be tolerated largely for their political utility.

Is the popular science fiction film an allegory with blue Palestinians?

James Wall edited the Christian Century magazine for 27 years and remains as contributing editor. His brand of left-leaning politics and theology helped drive the once influential magazine, for which Reinhold Neibuhr once wrote, into near oblivion, from which it has barely recovered.

But Wall is unrepentant, and now he has blogged that the new science fiction movie Avatar is a metaphor for ostensible Israeli oppression of Palestinians, as well as American imperialism overall. Understandably, “Friends of Sabeel – North America,” which organizes anti-Israel opinion among church groups, is spotlighting Wall’s analysis.

Wall was delighted that the Obama family viewed “Avatar” on New Year’s Eve and excitedly hopes the film can be screened in the White House as a “teachable moment.” A frequent visitor to the Middle East, Wall is himself a die-hard critic of Israel and embodies the Religious Left’s 40 year old hostility to Israel. He often editorialized against Christian support for Israel while Christian Century editor but now must rely on his blog and further broadcasts by kindred spirits like Sabeel.

Avatar, of course is a futuristic fantasy in which wicked, American-like mercenaries invade a bucolic and distant moon of serene aliens so as to despoil them of their coveted natural resources. It is a science fiction version of “Dancing with Wolves,” in which natives are primitive but noble, while the technologically more advanced American invaders are vulgar, violent and materialistic. The Kevin Costner-like character is a former Marine dispatched initially by the evil American corporation duplicitously to befriend and inveigle the native aliens. Instead, he falls in love with the aliens and leads them, with their alien bows and arrows, allied with an aroused animal kingdom, and guided by a pagan Mother Deity, into successful resistance against the attacking Americans.

Naturally, an old-time Religious Left icon like James Wall would joyfully discern political metaphors in a film whose audience cheers for resisting natives against invading Americans. The native aliens could be Vietnamese, or Iraqis, or virtually any favored Third World victim group of American imperialism. But Wall preferred to imagine that “Avatar” illustrates the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, as well as Afghanistan and Pakistan.

“What viewers of Avatar discover is that the film immediately suggests the oppression of Native Americans by the U.S. government, because the Na’vi [the alien natives] and the land on which they live share a spiritual bond,” Wall opined. “The film also evokes the Vietnam War because the setting of the military struggle is a lush jungle. Gaza, Afghanistan and its neighbor Pakistan, are mountainous; there are no jungles. The dominant indigenous religion of Gaza and Af-Pak is Muslim, but like the Na’vi, the inhabitants live on land the outside invaders wish to control.”

Most Avatar viewers will be young people, Wall enthused, so it is an “incredible Teaching Moment” to shape impressionable minds. Indeed, it presents a “ built-in audience in which the way has been prepared to consider the foolishness of following the path to destruction which the military-industrial complex insists is necessary for human survival.” Wall was so excited that he suggested that any preacher wanting to affect young parishioners should stop reading Wall’s Christian Century and instead “race” to see Avatar. After all, “God works in mysterious ways. Why not through Avatar?”

Wall regretted that Obama is “already on the steady downward slope left to him by the Bush war-mongers” and “has to talk tough on terror to keep the Dick Cheney crowd at bay.” He hoped that a “progressive” would get Wall’s own musings to Obama to alert him to Avatar’s rich potential. After all, the “well-trained” Mainstream Media is so “fearful of Cheney and his neo-con gang to see anything in Avatar except an exciting sci-fi love story in the jungle which ends in a video game-like battle in the jungle.”

Tragically, the “political parallels to Gaza, Afghanistan and Pakistan were ignored,” Wall regretted of most film reviewers, who even spiked the revealing comment by one American commander who nastily refers to the alien natives as “terrorists” and urges his invading force to fight “terror” with “terror.” Wall is praying that Avatar creator James Cameron’s “vision” will help further persuade a “public that knows these invasions are not really in our national best interests.” And he assumed that “anyone with the slightest willingness to view our three current wars (Af-Pak directly, Gaza through our Israeli surrogates) will not miss Cameron’s vision.” Wall even hoped that Cameron, if he gets an Academy Award, might “startle America with an anti-colonial jeremiad.”

Meanwhile, as Avatar unfolds as a “Teaching Moment,” there are other marvelous events breaking forth, Wall rejoiced. Over 1300 anti-Israel activists from around the world descended on Cairo, Egypt, over New Year’s to march into Gaza in protest against Israel’s “destruction” after its “23-day military invasion of Gaza one year ago.” Of course Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, as a “US-Israeli tool, doing their bidding instead of supporting the Palestinians,” refused to let the marchers into Gaza. Eventually a small delegation was permitted to visit Gaza, while the hundreds of others will, Wall approvingly surmised, return home and angrily accelerate their anti-Israel pressure campaign.

“The times, they are a’changing, and we have to believe Barack Obama knows this,” Wall smilingly concluded. “Obama has seen the movie [Avatar]. He also knows the right thing to do in Gaza, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It is time to rally the public to make this consummate politician do what he knows, deep down, is the right thing to do.”

Probably the early writers and editors of Wall’s Christian Century, like Reinhold Neibuhr, would not have attached their loftiest political hopes to the perceived political metaphors of a science fiction thriller about translucent blue aliens. Maybe Wall’s fawning review of Avatar and dreams of a nation-changing White House film premier is itself a metaphor for the Religious Left’s intellectual and spiritual implosion.
