The Islamic State’s threats to strike in Canada are carried out – while the media search for a motive.

Canada has experienced two murderous jihad terror attacks in the last three days, not long after the Islamic State called for such attacks – but the denial and obfuscation are as thick as ever.

On Monday, Ahmad Rouleau, a convert to Islam, hit two Canadian soldiers with his car, murdering Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent. Then he led police on a high-speed chase, during which he called 911 and explained that he was doing it all “in the name of Allah.” The chase, and Rouleau’s jihad, ended when he flipped his car and then, brandishing a knife, charged police, who shot him dead. One of Rouleau’s close friends said: “It was a terrorist attack and Martin died like he wanted to. That’s what happened….He did this because he wanted to reach paradise and assure paradise for his family. He wanted to be a martyr….The caliphate called all the Muslims on earth to fight. He listened to what they had to say and he did his part here.”

Then on Wednesday, Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who has been widely reported to be a recent convert to Islam but whose father is a veteran of the jihad in Libya and who has been a Muslim for at least three years, went on a shooting rampage in Ottawa, murdering military reservist Corporal Nathan Cirillo and engaging in a gun battle inside Canada’s Parliament building. Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird said that there was “no evidence at this stage” that Zehaf-Bibeau had connections to any jihad groups, but CNN reported that “according to a U.S. counterterrorism source, Zehaf-Bibeau was connected to Hasibullah Yusufzai through social media. Yusufzai is wanted by Canadian authorities for traveling overseas to fight alongside Islamist fighters in Syria.” And “other radicalized people connected to Zehaf-Bibeau are still believed to be living in Canada, two U.S. law enforcement officials said.”

So Zehaf-Bibeau had connections to at least one jihadist who went to Syria to wage jihad, and Rouleau listened to what the Islamic State was saying, and “did his part” in Canada. What was the Islamic State saying? Late in September, the Islamic State’s spokesman, Abu Muhammad Al-Adnani, urged Muslims to murder non-Muslims in the West. “Rely upon Allah,” he thundered, “and kill him in any manner or way however it may be. Do not ask for anyone’s advice and do not seek anyone’s verdict. Kill the disbeliever whether he is civilian or military, for they have the same ruling.” He also addressed Western non-Muslims: “You will not feel secure even in your bedrooms. You will pay the price when this crusade of yours collapses, and thereafter we will strike you in your homeland, and you will never be able to harm anyone afterwards.”

Al-Adnani told Muslims to murder non-Muslims with any weapon at hand, or anything that could be used as a weapon: “If you are not able to find an IED or a bullet, then single out the disbelieving American, Frenchman, or any of their allies. Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him.” Zehaf-Bibeau found a bullet. Rouleau found a car.

Yet despite the indications that Rouleau and Zehaf-Bibeau were heeding the Islamic State’s call to wage jihad at home by any means possible, the mainstream media was ready before the blood had dried to swing into the usual denial and obfuscation about the motives and goals of their attacks. Before Zehaf-Bibeau’s identity was known, CBC’s Doug Stoffel tweeted: “Amid the speculation in the #OttawaShooting in #Canada, it’s important to remember #ISIS hasn’t shown interest in attacks abroad.” Once Zehaf-Bibeau was identified as the shooter and was known to be a Muslim, ABC News one-upped Stoffel’s flagrantly counter-factual statement with the claim that “authorities in Canada are trying to understand what motivated a gunman to kill a soldier in the country’s capital Wednesday.”

In reality, what motivated him was blazingly obvious, but it was the one thing most Western government officials and all of the mainstream media have determined to ignore, and so the search was one for some other remotely plausible motive that could be sold to a public that is increasingly suspicious of what the government and media elites are telling them. Toronto’s Globe and Mail quoted a friend of Zehaf-Bibeau saying, “I think he must have been mentally ill,” although the only evidence for this that the paper presented was that “his friend frequently talked about the presence of Shaytan in the world – an Arabic term for devils and demons” – in other words, that Zehaf-Bibeau spoke frequently of what are standard beliefs of mainstream Islam.

Speaking of mental illness, in the wake of the Ottawa shootings, the police chiefs of Toronto and Ottawa wrote to local Muslim leaders, assuring them of their good will and urging Muslims to contact them in case of a “backlash.” These politically correct police chiefs seem to have imbibed the lesson well: after every jihad attack, Muslims are the victims, and need special reassurances. Of course, there should be no “backlash” against any innocent people and almost certainly won’t be, but this endless pandering is grotesque. Who is reassuring non-Muslims about keeping them safe from jihad attacks? Who is calling upon Muslim leaders in Canada or anywhere else to back up their condemnations of jihad terror with real action against it, including programs to teach young Muslims to reject that understanding of Islam?

No one. And that’s why Ahmad Rouleau and Michael Zehaf-Bibeau are likely to be only the first two in a long line of Muslims in Canada who heed the Islamic State’s call and murder their infidel countrymen. As long as politically correct fictions are allowed to befog the harsh realities of jihad, the bottom line is simple: more people are going to die.

The mother of the Muslim terrorists who attacked Canada’s parliament building on October 22 says she is weeping for her son’s victims, not for her son. What a contrast with the mothers of Palestinian terrorists who murder Israelis.

Mrs. Susan Bibeau, the mother of Canadian terrorist Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, told the Associated Press on October 23: “If I’m crying it’s for the people, not for my son…I am mad at my son.”

If only Palestinian mothers felt the same way! Instead, they have the jihad mentality, too.

Last year (on Jan. 27, 2013), the Facebook page of Fatah, the movement headed by Palestinian Authority chairman Mahmoud Abbas, posted a feature about the mother of 23-year-old Wafa Idris, the first female Palestinian suicide bomber. She murdered one Israeli, and wounded over 100, by blowing herself up in a Jerusalem supermarket in 2002. The posting quoted Wafa’s mother as saying “She is a hero…My daughter is a Martyr (Shahida).”

The Fatah page added: “Wafa’s mother said that she is proud of her daughter, and hopes that more girls will follow in her footsteps.”

More recently, in an interview with Israel Television on June 29, the mother of one of the Hamas terrorists involved in the kidnap-murders of three Israeli teenagers said: “If they [the Israelis] accuse him of this [the kidnapping], and if it is a true accusation, I will be proud of him until Judgment Day. If the accusation that he did it is true…My boys are all righteous, pious and pure. The goal of my children is the triumph of Islam.”

Of course, that is not to say that no Palestinian mothers have any regrets about their children carrying out suicide bombing. But those regrets are not always the kind one would hope for. For example, on June 6, 2004, PA Television broadcast these remarks by the mother of a 15-year-old who died during a suicide attack: “It was sad and joyous what happened to him, meaning, he always liked the Shahada (Martyrdom). All children at his age do. He always cared for me. I would have preferred that one of his other brothers would have attained Shahada instead of him, because he was the joy of my life.”

(All translations courtesy of Palestinian Media Watch.)

How can one explain the stark contrast between the Canadian mother and the Palestinian mother? It’s not really so complicated. Different cultures have different values. Canadian culture promotes Judeo-Christian values — democracy, equal rights, respect for minorities, non-violence.

By contrast, Palestinian society is dominated by a “culture of Jihad,” Israeli Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said this week. On his Facebook Page, Ya’alon wrote that the latest Palestinian terrorist attacks are “clearly the outcome of those in the Palestinian Authority who educate the younger generation to hate Jews and expel them from their homeland.” He added: “The Palestinian Authority does not, and never did, have a culture of peace, but rather a culture of incitement and jihad against Jews. It starts with Abbas’s lying statements against Israel from the UN podium, continues with persistent Palestinian attempts to delegitimize us in the international arena and ends with incitement in the Palestinian education system. These are the harsh consequences.”

Yet another convert to Islam takes center stage.

The nation of Canada is reeling today from a brutal terrorist attack in the capital city of Ottawa that claimed the life of Canadian reservist Nathan Cirillo. The attacker has been identified as Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, a 32-year-old convert to Islam, who was killed by authorities as he opened fire inside the Canadian Parliament. The incident comes just two days after two Canadian soldiers were deliberately struck by a speeding vehicle driven by another Islamic convert, leaving one soldier dead. The twin attacks have demonstrated that even the unassuming nation of Canada is not immune to the threat of Islamic terrorism, which once again has been allowed to flourish under a lax regime of global leadership.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Wednesday morning, Zehaf-Bibeau, using a keffiyeh to cover his face and brandishing a long-barreled rifle, approached the Canadian National War Memorial, dedicated to the memory of Canadian soldiers who have lost their lives in defense of their country. Clp. Cirillo was standing watch at the Tomb of the Unknown solider when he was shot in the abdomen by Zehaf-Bibeau at point-blank range. Zehaf-Bibeau then ran into the Canadian Parliament, where he was killed following a shoot-out with authorities.

Cpl. Cirillo, a 24-year-old father, was rushed to the hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries. A parliamentary guard sustained a gunshot wound to the leg during the attack and is said to be recovering.

Warning signs for Canadians have abounded in recent weeks. In early October, reports broke that an ISIS-connected terrorist plot, allegedly targeting a shopping mall and the U.S. embassy in Ottawa, had been thwarted by authorities. A day before the public learned of the attack, Canadian intelligence and security agencies briefed Canadian lawmakers on the threat of Islamic radicalism growing inside the country. However, while officials ultimately downplayed the idea that an attack was imminent, less than a week ago the government quietly raised the domestic terrorism threat level to medium for the first time in four years.

“This week’s events are a grim reminder that Canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world,” a visibly shaken Prime Minster Stephen Harper said in a statement to the nation Wednesday. Harper vowed that the attack would lead Canada to “strengthen our resolve and redouble our efforts, and those of our national security agencies, to take all necessary steps to identify and counter threats and keep Canada safe here at home.”

Worried Canadians should not be heartened by Harper’s pronouncements given what we have learned about officals’ alleged monitoring of Zehaf-Bibeau and other like-minded terrorists embedded in Canadian society. Zehaf-Bibeau, born Michael Joseph Hall, had been known to Canadian authorities for his jihadist proclivities and potential for violence. He had recently been designated by the government as a “high-risk traveler” and had his passport seized out of fear that he was liable to commit acts of terrorism abroad. Despite a long criminal history of drug trafficking, credit-card forgery, robbery, and multiple stints in jail, Zehaf-Bibeau could not be taken off the streets.

The disconcerting facts surrounding Zehaf-Bibeau are eerily similar to those of Martin Couture-Rouleau, a.k.a. “Ahmad LeConverti” (Ahmad the Converted), the Canadian Muslim convert who ran a car into two Canadian soldiers on Monday in the Quebec city of Saint-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, claiming the life of one of the victims. Couture-Rouleau was arrested and questioned in July when he attempted to fly out of Canada to Turkey. Couture-Rouleau’s passport had also been seized in an attempt to prevent him from traveling abroad and taking up arms with fellow Islamic terrorists.

Ninety other individuals like Zehaf-Bibeau and Couture-Rouleau are reportedly on a Royal Canadian Mounted Police watch list due to suspicion that they have or are planning to participate in militant activities abroad. At least 80 individuals present in the country are believed by Canadian intelligence to have gone overseas to participate in terrorist activities, and as many as 145 Canadians around the world are said by intelligence to be actively involved in terrorist groups.

The same is true for many Western countries. Approximately 100 individuals from the U.S. are believed by the National Counterterrorism Center to have attempted to leave the country to fight alongside ISIS jihadists. The FBI estimates that a dozen Americans are currently fighting in Iraq and Syria, while Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) reports that that some 40 U.S. citizens have been allowed re-entry into the country after fighting with ISIS. According to the Obama administration, this is their right.

“Ultimately, an American citizen, unless their passport is revoked, is entitled to come back,” FBI Director James Comey declared earlier this month. “So, someone who’s fought with ISIL, with an American passport wants to come back, we will track them very carefully.”

Yet the events in Canada of the last several days have cast doubt on the reliability of the purported “careful tracking” strategy.

“If you want to go to Syria and Iraq, please go, but never come back,” Geert Wilders told FrontPage’s Jamie Glazov on this week’s episode of The Glazov Gang. In this prophetic warning against the policy of barring known ISIS jihadists from exiting Western countries, Wilders pinpointed why Canadian soldiers like Cpl. Cirillo needlessly, and tragically, lose their lives at the hand of jihad. By refusing to allow highly “motivated” jihadists to leave, Western governments have made, in Wilders’ words, “our own streets, our own airports, our own train stations, our own malls, very dangerous places to be.”

*

Don’t miss Geert Wilders on this week’s Glazov Gang explaining why terrorist attacks like the one that just happened in Canada occur — and what the West must do to preserve itself:

Gavin Boby is well worth hearing, but Canadian newsmakers don’t want you to know that.

Gavin Boby is a British lawyer who established the Law and Freedom Foundation in 2011 to work with communities to resist Islamization, particularly the campaigns of harassment and dominance that mosques routinely bring in their wake. Dubbed the “mosque-buster” because of his success in defeating 16 of 17 mosque applications in British neighborhoods, Boby spoke in Ottawa, Montreal, and Toronto this past week about the principles underlying his pro bono work. When I heard him make his presentation in Ottawa on Monday, February 4, his measured, soft-spoken manner and fact-based analysis contrasted suggestively with the melodramatic denunciations and biased reporting that surrounded his appearance.

Only in a nation hobbled by political correctness of the most mind-boggling sort could a speaker proposing nothing more shocking than residents’ right to defend their neighborhoods be so vociferously denounced. The self-righteous outcries at Boby’s “fearmongering” came not only from the predictable sources—in this case the Canadian arm of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-CAN), fawningly reported on by the press despite its close ties to terrorist organizations—but also from self-proclaimed free-thinkers and mainstream journalists. When everyone involved declares their commitment to free speech while seeking to suppress, distort, and censor Boby’s message, one is left staggered by the House of Mirrors confusion passing for informed debate in this country.

A week before Boby’s scheduled appearance, an editorial appeared in the Ottawa Citizen by two conservative-leaning commentators, Fred Litwin, founder of Ottawa’s Free Thinking Film Society, and Salim Mansur, author of Delectable Lie: A Liberal Repudiation of Multiculturalism. Emphasizing the necessity of distinguishing peaceful from violent forms of Islam, the authors identified Boby as one among a number of “misguided” activists who have apparently made “all Muslims and Islam their enemies.” While not explaining how one can distinguish good from bad Islam in advance—once a mosque has been built and radicalized, it’s too late to deny its permit—Litwin and Mansur charge that Boby’s work is “counter-productive” and imply that his effort to oppose extremism is itself a factor promoting extremism. This position—that merely advocating local, case-by-case legal action to oppose mosque construction is unacceptably intolerant—became the main tenor of the attacks on Boby in the days that followed, attacks that accused him of seeking to “marginalize entire communities” and of engaging in “the most dangerous form of conflict-generation.” Concerns about the self-sequestering of Muslims and their well-documented aggression received only lip service at best from the anti-Boby pundits.

With even self-proclaimed anti-Islamists decrying the talk, it was not surprising to see CAIR-CAN labeling Boby an “anti-Muslim hate-monger” and calling for the Ottawa Public Library to cancel his appearance. Claiming that a tax-payer funded venue should not be used to legitimize Islamophobia, CAIR-CAN cited as proof of Boby’s bigotry his reputed statements that “Islam encourages pedophilia, sex abuse, and pimping.” Has Boby made such statements? And if he has, are they false? The Ottawa Citizen wouldn’t say; it also refrained from any comment on CAIR’s own highly illiberal and immoderate positions and associations. It did, however, see fit to investigate the grassroots organization responsible for bringing Boby to Ottawa: ACT! For Canada. Modeled on Brigitte Gabriel’s Act! For America, it was established by Valerie Price, who maintains its website. The Citizen was not impressed. Noting ACT’s claim to defend Canadian “national security” and “democratic values,” the article focused with disapproval on the fact that ACT’s website “is given over almost entirely to discussion of Islam and terrorism” (yes, these are the threats to security and democracy that concern the organization) and that its presentation was “highly inflammatory.” The single example of “inflammatory” material was the website’s claim that Hitler’s Mein Kampf is a bestseller in the Muslim world—which it is. But truth is no defense against the findings of the thought police: the implication of the article was that ACT! For Canada is a Muslim-hating organization bringing in a Muslim-hating speaker.

Members of ACT (and I am one of them) consoled themselves that so much negative press could lead to wide dissemination of Boby’s message and prompt a good turnout on a very cold (-20 Celsius) Ottawa evening; or perhaps it might keep controversy-averse Canadians away. On Monday night, there was a modest turnout (about 80 people) and limited protest: a small group of dissenters gave interviews in the library lobby but did not seek to disrupt the talk—nor to attend it.

Boby himself did not disappoint. He spoke in lucid and quietly impassioned terms of his advocacy, asserting that it is based not in hatred for Muslims but in love for the British tradition of decency, restraint, and public order that he wished to preserve for future generations. He used reliable studies and poll results to show why mosques are different in kind from churches, synagogues, or other places of worship, being not centers of religious contemplation only but command centers of jihadist recruitment where believers are indoctrinated to support and commit violence against non-believers. A 2011 study by Mordechai Kedar and David Yerushalmi found that 81% of 100 American mosques randomly surveyed contained materials promoting “moderate” (30%) or “severe” (51%) violence, while only 19% of the mosques contained no material promoting violence. (As Boby pondered, what would constitute “moderate violence?”) Perhaps even more significantly, Muslims attending the pro-violence mosques vastly outnumbered those attending the non-violent mosques. The researchers found that non-violent mosques had a mean attendance of only 15 worshipers; on the other hand, violence-promoting mosques, whether falling in the “severe” or “moderate” category, had a mean attendance of 178 worshipers. It is Muslims themselves, Boby concluded from such statistics, who have defined what form of Islam they find authentic.

Boby spoke of the stages of intimidation and neighborhood control that typically follow the establishment of a mosque. At the beginning, there is the relatively non-serious headache of parking problems, the so-called “parking jihad”: residents find their driveways blocked and every space on the street taken up by mosque attenders’ cars. The problems become more severe with time, including verbal harassment (“You can’t dress like that; this is a Muslim area”); attacks on dog owners; the grooming of teenage girls for sexual exploitation; vandalism of non-Muslim homes; and vaguely-threatening visits by Muslim men to non-Muslim home-owners to encourage them to sell up. The most extreme result—seen in some British areas as well as throughout European cities—is the establishment of Islamic-controlled no-go areas where the national law has ceased to operate—complaints to police at any of the stages tend to be worse than useless—and where Sharia compliance is forced on all. The consequences are particularly harsh for Jews, homosexuals, and women who refuse the veil.

Mosques tend to be built in poor neighborhoods where residents—often pensioners, widows, and blue-collar workers—lack the financial resources or cultural confidence to protest. They are rightfully suspicious that their concerns will be dismissed by local councilors as racist. They don’t know how planning applications work and they have been made to feel that any criticism of Muslim ideology or behavior is unacceptable, possibly even criminal. Boby points out that he is merely helping them to use the legal channels created precisely to foster citizen involvement in town planning. Contrary to so many reports on his work, he does not wish nor does he have the power to stop all mosques or to prohibit Muslims from worshipping.

If there are errors in Boby’s evidence or reasoning, none of his detractors could find them, resorting instead to tactics of emotional accusation and misrepresentation. Dissenters at his Ottawa talk asked why he targeted Muslims when there were bad apples in every religion, ignoring his thorough explanation of the special case presented by mosques. Others wondered whether he was appropriately supportive of the “moderates” attempting to renew Islam, ignoring his evidence that mosque-attending Muslims favor the firebrand variety. No matter how patiently Boby set out his proofs—often in the form of devout Muslims’ own horrifying statements of belief—the politically correct charged him with extremism.

Lazy and ideologically slanted representation also dominated press coverage after the event, the exception being the conservative-oriented SUN News Network, which gave fair coverage. An article by the notoriously left-wing Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) referred repeatedly to Boby’s position that “mosques should not be built in non-Muslim areas,” never mentioning why residents might legitimately fear mosques and leaving readers to construe that Boby’s stance (always presented as a lunatic lone crusade) was based on racism. The Ottawa Citizen’s report was just slightly more informative, referring to Boby’s resistance to “what he sees as Islam’s anti-democratic direction.” No evidence for “what he sees” was included, making it seem like a far-out personal opinion. A pious editorial in the Ottawa Citizen following Boby’s talk downplayed his representation of the British situation and asserted that even if some problems do exist, “there are laws” to deal with them.

The overall message of such reporters was clear: there was nothing to learn from Boby, nothing to fear from Islam. As the Ottawa Citizen reporter put it in the first line of his account, “Despite the advance controversy … the city greeted the speech with a collective shrug.” The real shrug, of course, was the reporter’s own when he decided to rely on his politically correct talking points rather than report the substance of Boby’s sober and informative presentation. Many such journalists are determined not to hear what they don’t like—and to prevent others from hearing it as well. They are protected from the outside world by the hard shell of politically correct ignorance: no noise annoys an oyster.

A film festival that really makes a difference.

Last year at around this time, I wrote here about Ottawa’s Free Thinking Film Society (FTFS), founded a few years ago by music producer Fred Litwin. His idea: to bring to the Canadian capital documentaries and other worthwhile films whose content, for one reason or another, pretty much guarantees that they’ll be politically anathema to the people who decide which documentaries get to be seen in mainstream and “alternative” venues. The annual highlight of the FTFS’s schedule is the Free Thinking Film Festival (FTFF), which this year was held last weekend. I was lucky enough to attend.

Among the films I saw was Israel Inside (2011). When the popular author and Harvard professor Tal Ben-Shahar returned to his native Israel after fourteen years, he found a country that “had not only joined the twenty-first century,” but “was in many ways leading the way.” Israel is second only to the Silicon Valley in IT start-ups. With only eight million people, it has more firms listed on the NASDAQ exchange than any country except for the U.S. (pop. 315 million) and China (1.34 billion).

Why this disproportionate success? Ben-Shahar provides a convincing answer, listing six factors, or “actualizers.” First, family: “Israel feels like a big, united family,” which breeds interdependence and independence. Second, a knack for turning adversity into advantage. (Example: Israelis broil in the hot sun – but that hot sun also makes for great solar power, which they’ve used since the 1950s.) Third, chutzpah: “not taking no for an answer, challenging the status quo.” Fourth, education: “no people,” Israel’s chief rabbi explains, “put education so much at the top of their priorities.” Fifth, taking action: in Israel, “it’s almost like there isn’t a barrier between theory and practice.” Sixth, tikkun olam, or “repairing the world” – meaning “striving to exemplify and promote goodness wherever we can.”

Ben-Shahar effectively illustrates the reality of these factors in Israeli life, and shows how they spur creativity and ingenuity – leading to such innovations as “drip irrigation” (which waters 40% more crops with half as much water, helping to make once-arid Israel the world’s top exporter of fresh fruits and vegetables). He also reminds us of Israel’s remarkable readiness, despite all its own problems and the worldwide eagerness to demonize it, to extend a helping hand to other countries – Haiti after its earthquake, Japan after its tsunami. All in all, Israel Inside is an impressive rebuke to glib, mendacious anti-Israel propaganda – and a moving reminder that the Jewish state is, indeed, an oasis of advanced and humane civilization in a desert of barbarism.

If only I could screen Israel Inside to the reality-challenged members of Queers against Israeli Apartheid (QUAIA), who were the subject of Why Is It Hate?, a documentary by gay Toronto lawyer Martin Gladstone, who, as Litwin noted in introducing the film, has waged a “one-man campaign” against the group. Gladstone shows QUAIA members marching in Toronto’s gay-pride parade, chanting idiotic anti-Semitic slogans and wearing t-shirts equating Israel with Nazi Germany. At a hearing considering the question of QUAIA’s right to take part in the parade, a city-council member asks a QUAIA spokeswoman: “What’s the status of the gay community in the countries that surround Israel?” The QUAIA member is indignant: “What does that have to do with anything!…The question is disingenuous and manipulative. Personally I don’t know how gays are treated in Arab countries.” From which Gladstone cuts, without comment, to that now-iconic picture of two gay teenagers being hanged in Iran.

QUAIA members could also learn a thing or two from The Invisible Men, a touching documentary by Israeli director Yariv Mozer about three gay Palestinians who live illegally in Israel to keep from being murdered by their families. Louie has a scar on his cheek because his father “almost slaughtered me, like a lamb, like a goat,” for being gay. Abdu tells about being beaten by Palestinian Authority cops who accused him of being a Mossad agent (a charge often leveled at gay Palestinians by PA officials). When we meet Faris, he’s in Ramallah, on the run both from his father, who has sworn to kill him, and from the PA cops, who are also hunting him down for being gay. Watching this film, I found myself wishing I could duct-tape the fatuous lesbian Sarah Schulman, that proudly pro-Palestinian, Israel-hating fool, to a chair and force her to watch it.

Israel wasn’t the only topic addressed at the FTFF. There were films – by all accounts stirring and illuminating – on China, North Korea, the Baha’i in Iran, the fall of the Soviet Union, Putin, the Romanian revolution, Rachel Carson, Winston Churchill, “the politics of food,” and much else. Many were obscure works that you might otherwise never get to see; others (Atlas Shrugged, Part One; Andrew Breitbart’s eye-opening look at the Occupy movement) were more high-profile. And there were non-film offerings. I gave a talk about my new book, and Tuvia Tenenbom served up a lively and powerful presentation about I Sleep in Hitler’s Room, his alternately grim and hilarious account (here’s my review of it) of a six-month journey around Germany, during which he discovered that Aryan anti-Semitism is alive and well – a conclusion at which a dapper, slippery bully of a reporter for Deutsche Welle took loud and obnoxious umbrage.

Some of the films screened at the FTFF can be ordered online and watched in the comfort of your own home – and I encourage you to do just that. But the FTFF is about more than just individuals sitting in the dark and watching a movie or two. It’s about a community of, yes, free-thinking people who’ve long recognized that their major news media, from the Canadian Broadcasting Company on down, are feeding them a highly slanted picture of the world – and who are determined to do something about that. Thanks to Litwin, they’ve found each other, and the excitement of that discovery is palpable, both in the Q&A sessions that follow some of the events and in the lively, urgent conversations during the intermissions. For these folks, attending the screenings and other events, which have opened their eyes to a whole world of sobering phenomena that the MSM have either ignored or misrepresented, aren’t an end in themselves – they’re calls to action. “What do we do about this?” people kept asking.

Some leftists, told about the FTFS, would doubtless imagine an assemblage of resentful middle-aged straight white working-class men. On the contrary, the attendees were strikingly diverse – in age, race, religion, class, profession, sexual orientation, you name it. But the whole point was that they weren’t there to assert their group identities; at least in part, they were there in reaction to a mainstream culture that’s encouraged them to center their identities on superficial attributes. They were individuals – inspiringly intelligent, thoughtful, and curious, deeply concerned about multiculturalism, political correctness, the demonization of America and Israel, and the appeasement of Islam, and determined to safeguard their freedoms (and their children’s freedoms) against all threats foreign and domestic. Why, I kept wondering, as I have on previous visits to Litwinland, can’t this dynamic gathering be replicated all over North America?

A new promising frontier emerges in Canada in the terror war.

Visit Newsreal

Canada is adopting a new bill (Bill S-7) that will allow victims of terrorism to sue for terrorist acts in Canadian court, putting an onus of responsibility and accountability on terrorist states and/or organizations. Albeit a complicated task, it is a step in the right direction, targeting the pocketbooks of these reprobates.

For too long innocent taxpayers have been exploited by the Islamic fringe and although Bill S-7 won’t significantly benefit taxpayers directly, theoretically it balances the books a trifle in offsetting the reprehensible monetary endowments enjoyed by this fringe. Some examples: Hundreds of polygamous men who have brought their wives from abroad into Ontario are now being supported by state welfare; Mohamed Omary—on welfare for two decades—has alleged links to terrorism and toured Europe; and Mahr Arar, still listed as a U.S. terrorist, successfully sued Ottawa for 10.5 million dollars (on taxpayers’ backs) due to an RCMP investigative “injustice.”

To a lesser degree, yet still examples of the frittering away of taxpayer dollars, are the indiscriminate sums doled out to informants. For example, Shaher Elsohemy, the Muslim businessman who was paid $4 million by the RCMP to infiltrate a core group of “Toronto 18” suspects, plotting bomb attacks in southern Ontario:

The lucrative deal between the Mounties and their prized informant included cash, cars and homes for him, his wife, his daughter, his parents and his two brothers …

There is also Mubin Shaikh who successfully negotiated a tax free 2.7 million dollars after going back to the RCMP Oliver Twist style.

In the early stages of the investigation, he happily accepted $77,000 to infiltrate the group … Shaikh went back to the RCMP and asked them to boost his reward to an even $300,000. They agreed.

Two years later… Shaikh is proving to be as much of a Crown liability as an asset. As star witnesses go, he has become more star than witness. Since the arrests, he has outed himself on national TV, proclaimed the innocence of some of the accused, snorted cocaine on the taxpayers’ dime, and pleaded guilty to threatening two 12-year-old girls. During his recent testimony at the youth trial, the Crown accused its own hired mole of fudging facts to protect the defendant.
….
And now, after all that, Mubin Shaikh wants more cash — more than 30 times the dollar figure he originally agreed to.

There are those who argue that these millions are well spent, given the catastrophic outcome of what could have occurred without their help. Pelting huge sums of money at informants for their service is inarguably the simplest route. Yet the unfriendly portrayal of Shaikh in Macleans provides a menacing inside scoop and provokes a need for scrutiny of the methodologies used by the RCMP, calling into question its level of investigative expertise. Its sloppiness in the Arar case is no less sobering.

Now, a new frontier in Canada has emerged in this war on terror which could offer some promise, even though tricky to enforce: Bill S-7—the Justice for Victims of Terrorism Act. The bill allows lawsuits against any person, group or country that supports or abets attacks, to be filed through Canadian courts.

The bill is nothing new. One precendent lawsuit involves the Libyan government’s role in the disastrous 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland. Libya subsequently agreed to compensate Lockerbie relatives to avoid a diplomatic row, and retire the issue through a peaceful settlement to normalize its relations with the United Nations (UN) and the U.S., a key point.

Meanwhile in a separate legal action through a Manhattan federal court, families of victims of the 9-11 terror attacks and a 1983 bombing of U.S. Marines in Lebanon have filed a lawsuit against Iran for $2.6 billion, citing its involvement as a state supporter of terrorism. But, given Iran’s history of calling 9-11 a “big lie” and its irrational anti-Semitic ramblings about obliterating Israel, it’s doubtable Iran will pay up.

Yet such legal suits are still promising beyond the compensatory factor. They serve as one critical part of a multifaceted strategy in the War on Terror: to isolate, marginalize, embarrass and hopefully shed light on the heinous crimes of terrorists and their impact on innocent victims. Sadly enough, there are still too many ignoramuses among us branding the West as evil and Israel as an Apartheid State while Islamist lunatics vehemently spread their Salafi ideologies within our very borders.

Forcing terrorist organizations and States into a position of public accountability before the international community is a welcome strategy that Canada has wisely endorsed through Bill S-7. Hopefully we will see more of this in the West.

A long-sought monument in Canada will thankfully soon be completed.

[This article is reprinted from the National Post]

In 1968, naive anti-establishment American and Canadian students considered themselves courageous for locking supine university presidents in their offices, throwing computers out of windows and even burning out-of-favour academics’ research work. They knew that in the free, indulgent West, their childish parody of a revolution would result in nothing more than a suspension from their studies.

In the same year truly courageous Moscow academic Yuri Glazov signed the famous “letter of the twelve,” protesting illegal arrests and trials of dissidents, knowing full well that this real act of revolution would result in a suspension of his human rights.

Glazov was predictably fired, meaning he was henceforth unemployable and deemed a “parasite” on the state. Warned by a friend, he narrowly avoided imprisonment on a trumped-up narcotics-dealing charge. Finally, through a stroke of luck, Glazov came with his family to the West, and in 1975 took up residence in Halifax as chair of the Russian Studies department at Dalhousie University, a position he held until shortly before his death in 1998.

[Yuri Glazov's family shortly before departure from Russia. From left to right: son Greg, Yuri, daughter Elena, wife Marina and son Jamie.]

An outstanding Canadian, Glazov deserves recognition, and so do many other brave dissidents for whom Canada has been a refuge. Nine million Canadians — that’s almost a third of us according to the 2006 census — came to these shores from communist-ruled countries. Many are now dead or very old. Their descendants deserve to see their sacrifices acknowledged and Canadians exposed to the full panoply of communist atrocities.

Prospects for educating Canadians about the human toll exacted by communism through their stories will brighten when a long-sought Ottawa Memorial to the Victims of Totalitarian Communism is completed, a project singled out for endorsement in the recent Throne Speech.

This memorial isn’t just a good idea, like an also-promised national Holocaust memorial, it is a necessary idea.

The exhaustively researched Holocaust is in no danger of being forgotten. The highest term of opprobrium in Western culture, whether from leftists or rightists (rightly or wrongly) is “Nazi,” not “communist.” That’s not because Nazis and communists have been compared and Nazis found to be worse. It’s because people don’t know how bad communism was and is.

In 2006 the Swedish Ministry of Education initiated programs teaching the crimes of communism because a poll had revealed only 10% of Swedish youth could identify the Gulag. Canadian youth would not fare better. All educated Canadians associate the word “Auschwitz” with “genocide.” The equally horrific “Holodomor” is more likely to draw a blank stare.

Why has communism escaped the moral condemnation Nazism attracts in such exuberant degree? In recent years several scholars have addressed the question and provided a litany of reasons, amongst them:

z Stalin was a war ally and therefore escaped the postwar censure he deserved;

z Only since the fall of the Berlin Wall has the most damaging data emerged; by then witnesses were aging and focused on economic priorities;

z There was no Nuremburg, no Truth and Reconciliation moment for communism as there was for other genocidal regimes;

z Communist propaganda machines are extremely efficient at positive branding (Trudeau bought in; his fawning patronage of Fidel Castro was beyond contemptible).

But all reasons pale beside the glaring failure of left-wing intellectuals to admit — and to teach — that communism isn’t simply an unfortunate contingency of socialist passion but an ideology as immoral and implacably ruthless and dramatically consequential as Nazism.

Actually it is more than intellectuals’ failure, which suggests passivity; it was, and is, active avoidance. Yuri Glazov was proud to become a Canadian citizen, but was shocked and chagrined at the ignorance and even denial of communism’s crimes he found amongst his fellow academics. As his son Jamie Glazov noted in his 2009 book, United in Hate: the Left’s Romance with Tyranny and Terror, “[W]hile we were cherishing our newfound freedom, we encountered … intellectuals in the universities who hated my parents for the story they had to tell …”

Left-wing intellectuals’ laundering of the truth about communism has translated into a vast lacuna in the teaching of 20th century history in our schools — one we can only hope the new memorial will help to fill.

The word “memorial” is somewhat misleading, though, suggesting that communism is a closed historical chapter. The fall of the Berlin Wall notwithstanding, communism in one guise or another still determines the fate of millions of hapless people around the globe. Victims in communist regimes are still starved, imprisoned, tortured and denied the most basic of human rights.

“Centre”? “Testament”? It is not too late to find a word to remind communism’s ongoing victims that right-thinking Canadians know the truth and will not abandon them.
