Karl Marx was wrong about virtually everything, but he was spot on when he said, “history repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” For the third time in six years, the European Union (EU) is on the verge of recession, a tragedy fueled by slow or non-existent growth, a strong possibility of continent-wide deflation, and debt burdens that remain onerous, if not catastrophic. Enter farce: the economic doyens of the EU have determined that Italy is no longer in recession due to a new way of measuring economic growth and GDP—one that counts illegal activities such as drug trafficking, prostitution and arms smuggling as part of the mix.

The new method of measuring economic data is called SEC2010 (also known as ESA2010) and is occasioned by the differing laws individual EU nations have regarding the legality of dubious activities. SEC2010 was originally published in June 2013, but it was implemented beginning last month. It is aimed at realizing “developments in measuring modern economies, advances in methodological research and the needs of users,” according to a statement by Eurostat.

As a result, the third largest EU economy has seen its “growth” rate revised by the Italian National Institute of Statistics from a 0.1 percent first quarter decline, to zero. Italy also had a 0.2 percent decline in the second quarter which was left unrevised. But because of the first quarter’s revision, the two consecutive quarters of negative growth necessary to define a recession has now been averted.

The move ostensibly gives Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi a brief respite in his effort to boost the economy, while staying below European Central Bank’s (ECB) requirements that budget deficits not exceed 3 percent of GDP, and gross debt not exceed 60 percent of GDP. Italy is one for two in that regard as its national debt remains more than double the ECB limit at 132 percent, even when black market activity is taken into account.

Renzi is attempting to reform Italy’s economy with a budget containing tax cuts for businesses and lower-income individuals, which he characterizes as “the biggest tax cut ever done by a government in a year,” and “a sign of Italy’s great strength, solidity, and determination.” But the government will remain saddled with debt and despite spending reductions to fight it, the budget deficit will rise from 2.2 percent to 2.9 percent. Moreover, Italy still intends to maintain its delay in reaching a structurally-adjusted balanced budget until 2017.

Italy is far from the EU’s only basket case. Germany, the EU’s largest economy, has seen its recovery falter and it endured an economic contraction of its own in the second quarter. France, the EU’s second largest economy, was flat over the same period, and growth in the EU as a whole was near zero.

Adding fuel to the debt-laden EU fire is an anemic rate of inflation, moving precipitously towards deflation. It has fallen to 0.3 percent in Sept. in the 18-member Eurozone, a level not seen since 2009. It is only marginally better in the EU as a whole at 0.4 percent. By comparison, inflation in the Eurozone in Sept. 2013 was 1.1 percent, with the EU at 1.3 percent during the same time frame, Eurostat reported. This marks the 20th straight month the ECB has missed its target inflation rate of 2 percent. Moreover, it looks like the region’s GDP will contract in the third quarter, precipitating the aforementioned triple-dip recession.

During an August 7 press conference, ECB president Mario Draghi promised the bank’s monetary policies would remain “highly accommodative.” “We are strongly determined to safeguard the firm anchoring of inflation expectations over the medium to long term,” he said. And once again, and equally as farcical, the ECB will embrace quantitative easing to “fix” the problem, which is also once again being blamed on too much “austerity.”

As Steve H. Hanke, professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University explains, the EU definition of austerity is a joke. “The leading political lights in Europe–Messrs. Hollande, Valls and Macron in France and Mr. Renzi in Italy–are raising a big stink about fiscal austerity,” he writes. “They don’t like it. And now Greece has jumped on the anti-austerity bandwagon. The pols have plenty of company, too. Yes, they can trot out a host of economists–from Nobelist Krugman on down–to carry their water.”

Hanke supplies a chart showing a continent sinking “under the weight of the State,” with the percentage of government spending relative to GDP that comes in at 58.5 percent for Greece, 57.1 percent for France, and 50.6 percent for Italy. In fact, out of the 30 European nations listed, only Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Romania and Slovakia spend less than 40 percent of their respective GDPs on government.

In a column for Bloomberg News, Leonid Bershidsky presents an equally compelling chart. It reveals that between 2007 and 2013, spending in the 28-member EU “reached 49 percent of gross domestic product in 2013, 3.5 percentage points more than in 2007,” Bershidsky writes. He further notes it was slightly higher than 50 percent in 2009, but the subsequent decline had nothing to do with spending cuts. “Rather, the spending didn’t go down as much as the economies collapsed, and then didn’t grow in line with the modest rebound,” he explains.

So much for austerity and spending “cuts.”

Which brings us to why the EU really fears deflation. As economic correspondent Ambrose Evans-Pritchard illuminates in an Oct. 10 column for The Telegraph, it is debt-addled governments that need inflation to manage their irresponsible debt burdens. All of this is framed in “eco-speak,” such as “demand stimulus” and “deflationary traps,” but the bottom line is clear: unless many of these governments can “inflate away their debt” with monetization, sovereign default becomes a genuine possibility.

Investment advisor Peter Schiff puts this lunacy in terms most people can understand, noting that “politicians and central bankers (and their academic, journalistic, and financial apologists) have concocted a variety of tortured theories as to why inflation is not just good for overly indebted governments, but an essential economic good for all. In a propaganda victory that even Goebbels would envy, it is now widely accepted that purchasing power must decrease for an economy to grow,” he writes.

The clearest current example of this propaganda is the semi-hysteria surrounding the fall in global oil prices. CBS News speaks to worldwide “economic and political shockwaves” related to government “budget shortfalls,” even as it is forced to admit such price cuts are an absolute boon for fuel consumers. One suspects most ordinary Europeans (and Americans as well) prefer lower fuel prices than “taking one for the government/banker team” desperate to substitute inflation for the kind of staggering tax increases and genuine cutting it would take to balance budgets throughout the EU. Thus, Andrew Roberts, credit chief at the Royal Bank of Scotland, sounds the predictable alarm. “We are reaching the end game in Europe,” he warns. “If they don’t launch real QE and start reflation by the end of the year or soon after, the consequences are too awful to contemplate.”

Compared to what? In Greece, the current unemployment rate is 26.7 percent. In Spain, it is 25.3 percent. Even in “recovering” Ireland, 11.8 percent of the workforce remains unemployed. What Roberts is really talking about is a massive debt crisis, one where the proverbial can must be continually kicked down the road—lest the true scope of the fiscal fecklessness engendered by years of unsustainable government spending be revealed.

Hence the continuing desire to mask the truth by literally throwing money at the problem, all in the name of saving the Euro and in turn the European Union, despite the reality that the marriage of spendthrift nations such as Greece, Spain and Portugal, with the relatively level-headed nation of Germany is a triumph of politically-motivated fantasy over fiscal reality. And while the bankers and politicians undoubtedly bear the lion’s share of the blame for the current predicament, the people themselves are hardly blameless. Their appetite for big government knows no bounds, and thus, what constitutes “courageous” behavior by politicians to get a handle on the problem assumes comical proportions. The Economist cites a great example, noting that Italy employs ushers in gold-braided uniforms at the Italian Parliament whose top salary for carrying messages to lawmakers used to be $181,590 a year, before Renzi imposed “austerity” by cutting it—to $140,000. Using email is apparently out of the question.

So is genuine austerity. Instead, the specter of deflation will be held up as the ultimate bogeyman, and the debt crisis that never really went away, despite the mainstream media’s lack of attention, will continue. And if it becomes necessary to calculate the economic output of hookers, gunrunners and drug dealers to boost GDP, so be it.

Although it verges on resembling a slogan, the Obama administration is embroiled in yet another scandal. The story involving Secret Service agents busted for hiring prostitutes during an official trip to Cartagena, Colombia in 2012 has re-emerged. According to the Washington Post, “senior White House aides were given information at the time suggesting that a prostitute was an overnight guest in the hotel room of a presidential advance-team member–yet that information was never thoroughly investigated or publicly acknowledged.” That revelation stands in stark contrast to denials made by Obama administration officials, who repeatedly insisted that no one from the White House was involved.

The original scandal broke when one of two dozen agents on the detail failed to pay one of the prostitutes for her services. All of the agents were punished or fired. But as the paper reveals, former White House presidential advance team member and volunteer Jonathan Dach not only registered a prostitute as his overnight guest, but White House officials were aware of it. Moreover, they allegedly attempted to sabotage the Inspector General office’s (IG) investigation.

The Secret Service reportedly shared the information on two different occasions with with top White House officials, including former White House Counsel Kathryn Ruemmler. Both times those officials conducted interviews with Dach. Both times they concluded he had done nothing wrong.

While this was occurring, a separate investigation conducted by the IG’s office of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for a Senate committee looking into the scandal discovered additional evidence, courtesy of records, along with eyewitness accounts from people who had accompanied Dach in Columbia. The lead investigator in the case subsequently told Senate staffers that pressure was brought to bear from his superiors in the offices of then-acting Inspector General Charles K. Edwards. “We were directed at the time . . . to delay the report of the investigation until after the 2012 election,” lead investigator David Nieland told Senate staffers, according to three unidentified people with knowledge of his statement. Nieland further revealed those superiors told him “to withhold and alter certain information in the report of investigation because it was potentially embarrassing to the administration.”

Edwards countered at the time, telling Senate staffers that changes to the report were part of the normal editing process and that he was trying to maintain the focus on DHS employees. In a summary letter submitted to Congress in September 2012, he reveals that his investigation “did find a hotel registry that suggests that two non-USSS personnel may have had contact with foreign nationals.” But because his investigation was limited to DHS personnel, he “did not conduct any additional investigation into this finding and has made no determination related to these individuals because they are not DHS personnel.”

In April 2012, the White House itself tried to defuse the allegations against advance team members, claiming they had conducted their own investigation and had found nothing wrong. But they refused to any share details, with then-Press Secretary Jay Carney insisting that “I don’t have, and I’m not going to give you, a blow-by-blow of what is involved in the review.” Carney was also contemptuous of Internet “rumors” published by writers “with no editors and no conscience.” “If someone comes to us with some credible allegation that anybody at the White House was involved in any inappropriate conduct, I’m sure that we’ll look at it, but there isn’t that,” he said. “There is an attempt by some to throw rumors out there.”

Edwards eventually resigned due to allegations of misconduct stemming in part from an ongoing dispute between the investigators and their superiors regarding the possible pursuit of involvement by White House team members. The Post notes that “staffers who raised questions about a White House role said they were put on administrative leave as a punishment for doing so,” and that “the way the White House handled the scandal remains a sore point among rank-and-file members of the Secret Service more than two years later.”

Unsurprisingly the White House has pushed back. On Wednesday, spokesman Eric Schultz insisted Obama and his advisors did not interfere with the investigation, and cited a Senate report on the IG’s office, saying an inquiry was unable to substantiate Nieland’s allegations. “As was reported more than two years ago, the White House conducted an internal review that did not identify any inappropriate behavior on the part of the White House advance team,” Schultz insisted.

The “old news” meme was amplified by White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest who tweeted, “Supposed WaPo ‘exclusive’ was previously reported by AP, CBS, ABC, Politico, The Hill & others – 2 years ago,” and hyperlinked to an AP piece of the Obama administration—exonerating itself. Carol Leonnig, one of the writers who broke the Washington Post story tweeted back, noting, “such different stories. None tell of evidence WH had in hand & decision to stop looking when it got more.”

Jonathan Dach, the man at the center of the storm, was a 25-year-old Yale University law student at the time. His father, Leslie Dach, contributed $23,900 to the Democratic party in 2008 to help elect Obama, and in his former job as a top lobbyist for Wal-Mart he worked with the White House on a number of projects, including Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” campaign. In July he joined the administration as a senior counselor with the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Part of his responsibilities include working on the next phase of ObamaCare.

Jonathan has a new position as well. He has been appointed as policy advisor — for the State Department’s Office of Global Women’s Issues. According to their website, the Office of Global Women’s Issues “seeks to ensure that women’s issues are fully integrated in the formulation and conduct of U.S. foreign policy,” and “works to promote stability, peace, and development by empowering women politically, socially, and economically around the world.” Apparently allegations of paying a woman for sex were insufficient to derail Dach’s post. Those allegations now include a Washington Post review of the hotel logs for Dach’s stay, “which showed that a woman was registered to Dach’s room at 12:02 a.m. April 4 and included an attached photocopy of a woman’s ID card.”

Dach has declined to be interviewed, but his attorney insists he denies hiring a prostitute, or taking anyone to his hotel room. “The underlying allegations about any inappropriate conduct by Jonathan Dach in Cartagena are utterly and completely false,” said Richard A. Sauber, who represents Jonathan and his father. “In addition, neither he nor anyone acting on his behalf ever contacted the DHS IG’s office about its report.”

The revelations are an additional headache for a White House already reeling from a series of Secret Service debacles. They include a fence-jumper who managed to get as far as the East Room of the White House, allowing an armed security contractor with three charges of assault and battery to get on an elevator with the president, and promoting an agent who has regularly served in Obama’s protective detail — despite the reality his gun was stolen from his car in 2009. Those lapses led to the resignation of Secret Service Director Julia Pierson following her disastrous testimony before a House committee on Sept. 30. Ironically she was hired following the resignation of her predecessor Mark J. Sullivan in 2013—ten months after the Cartagena hooker scandal.

A high-ranking Secret Service agent interviewed by the New York Observer under condition of anonymity speaks to an agency enduring a “catastrophic failure of all procedures and protocols,” one that is “under-staffed, under-trained, under-funded, not being innovative in doing more with less.”

This latest scandal and the allegations of the administration’s efforts to cover it up obviously merit additional investigation. Much like the Bengahzi disinformation campaign, the IRS’s targeting of conservative non-profits, and the president’s ridiculous assertion that terror is “on the run,” the alleged derailing of this investigation fits the pattern of an administration willing to use any means necessary to suppress information that would have damaged Obama’s 2012 reelection prospects. Moreover, Dach’s promotion and his father’s new job in the administration has a stench of quid pro quo about it unlikely to dissipate anytime soon. For the last six years, Democrats and their media cheerleading section have furiously opposed the notion that this administration is a cesspool of corruption. The November election is likely to show them the error of their ways.

Daniel Greenfield’s blog at The Point deals with this shameful, outrageous and terrifying story: “UK Police Arrested Parents Trying to Stop Muslims from Raping their Children.”

The series crystallizes why the horrible details emerging about the discovered 1,400 children victims in Rotherham was a Muslim crime the Left allowed to occur.

In Part I, Boby shares his battle against “Muslim Rape Gangs in the U.K.” and in Part II, he discusses his report on this horrifying phenomenon, ‘Easy Meat,‘ and takes us “Inside the World of Muslim Rape Gangs”:

The strange thing about this decision is how its talk of values and its pretense that it isn’t taking a position on prostitution resembles the gay marriage rulings in the United States. Or maybe it isn’t surprising at all.

The Canadian Supreme Court struck down laws against deriving income from prostitution, aka a ban on pimps, because, and I quote, “It also criminalizes those who “increase the safety and security of prostitutes,” such as legitimate drivers, managers and bodyguards.”

Furthermore it found that a ban on solicitation in public was also illegal.

In addition, the law on prohibiting soliciting was designed “not to eliminate street prostitution for its own sake, but to take prostitution off the streets and out of public view in order to prevent the nuisances that street prostitution can cause. The provision’s negative impact on the safety and lives of street prostitutes, who are prevented by the communicating prohibition from screening potential clients for intoxication and propensity to violence, is a grossly disproportionate response to the possibility of nuisance caused by street prostitution.”

“These restrictions on prostitution put the safety and lives of prostitutes at risk and are therefore unconstitutional,” Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin wrote.

The prostitution decision follows much the same underlying logic as gay marriage. You can fully ban something… but you can’t partially ban something.

Civil unions legally made gay marriage inevitable. As long as prostitution is allowed, attempting to artificially restrict it by context, will be struck down by leftist justices.

Lawyers for the federal and Ontario governments argued that if prostitutes want to avoid the inherent risks of prostitution, they could simply choose not to engage in it.

But that would just be crazy. We all know that oppressed classes don’t have choices. Gay men don’t choose to be gay. Prostitutes don’t choose to be prostitutes. Transsexuals don’t choose to be transsexuals.

“Yes, great day for Canada, Canadian women from coast to coast,” declared Terri Jean Bedford, bedecked in dominatrix attire.

Kim Pate, executive director of the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, called it a “sad day.”

“We have now confirmed that it’s okay to buy and sell women and girls in this country,” she said. “I think generations to come, our daughters, their granddaughters and on will look back and say, ‘what were they thinking?’”

This is what happens when the left takes over.

Clerics find a good use for women in the war against the infidel.

Originally published by the Investigative Project on Terrorism.

News emerged a few weeks ago in Arabic media that yet another fatwa had called on practicing Muslim women to travel to Syria and offer their sexual services to the jihadis fighting to overthrow the secularist Assad government and install Islamic law. Reports attribute the fatwa to Saudi sheikh Muhammad al-’Arifi, who, along with other Muslim clerics earlier permitted jihadis to rape Syrian women.

Muslim women prostituting themselves in this case is being considered a legitimate jihad because such women are making sacrifices—their chastity, their dignity—in order to help apparently sexually-frustrated jihadis better focus on the war to empower Islam in Syria.

And it is prostitution—for they are promised payment, albeit in the afterlife. The Koran declares that “Allah has purchased of the believers their persons [their bodies] and their goods; for theirs (in return) is the garden (of Paradise): they fight in His cause, and slay and are slain (Yusuf Ali trans. 9:111).

On the basis of this fatwa, several young Tunisian Muslim girls traveled to Syria to be “sex-jihadis.” Video interviews of distraught parents bemoaning their daughters’ fates are on the Internet, including one of a father and mother holding a picture of their daughter: “She’s only 16—she’s only 16! They brainwashed her!” pleads the father.

Most recently, the Egyptian-based news service Masrawy published a video interview with “Aisha,” one of the Tunisian Muslim girls who went sex-jihading in Syria, only to regret her actions. While in Tunisia, Aisha said she met a Muslim woman who began talking to her about the importance of piety, including wearing the hijab; she then went on to talk about traveling to Syria to help the jihadis “fight and kill infidels” and make Allah’s word supreme, adding that “women who die would do so in the way of Allah and become martyrs and enter paradise.” (According to mainstream Islamic teaching, dying in jihad is the only guaranteed way to avoid hell.)

Aisha eventually came to the conclusion that she was being exploited in the name of religion and left.

While news that Muslim girls in hijabs are prostituting themselves in the name of Islam may surprise some, Islamic clerics regularly issue fatwas permitting forbidden things—so long as they help the jihad. For instance, not only did the original “underwear bomber” Abdullah Hassan al-Asiri hide explosives in his rectum to assassinate Saudi Prince Muhammad bin Nayef—they met in 2009 after the 22-year-old Asiri “feigned repentance for his jihadi views“—but, according to Shi’ite talk-show host Abdullah Al-Khallaf, he had fellow jihadis sodomize him to “widen” his anus to fit more explosives.

Al-Khallaf read the fatwa that purportedly justified such actions during a 2012 Fadak TV episode. After praising Allah and declaring that sodomy is forbidden in Islam, the fatwa asserted:

However, jihad comes first, for it is the pinnacle of Islam, and if the pinnacle of Islam can only be achieved through sodomy, then there is no wrong in it. For the overarching rule of [Islamic] jurisprudence asserts that “necessity makes permissible the prohibited.” And if obligatory matters can only be achieved by performing the prohibited, then it becomes obligatory to perform the prohibited, and there is no greater duty than jihad. After he sodomizes you, you must ask Allah for forgiveness and praise him all the more. And know that Allah will reward the jihadis on the Day of Resurrection, according to their intentions—and your intention, Allah willing, is for the victory of Islam, and we ask that Allah accept it of you.

While all these sex-fatwas may seem bizarre, they highlight two important (though little known in the West) points. First, that jihad is the “pinnacle” of Islam—for it makes Islam supreme; and second, the idea that “necessity makes permissible the prohibited.” Because making Islam supreme through jihad is the greatest priority, anything and everything that is otherwise banned becomes permissible. All that comes to matter is one’s intention, or niyya (see Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi’s discussion along these lines).

As for the intersection between sex and violence (jihad), it was once explored by the Arabic satellite program Daring Question, which aired various clips of young jihadis giddily singing about their forthcoming deaths and subsequent sexual escapades in heaven. After documenting various anecdotes indicative of jihadi obsession with sex, Egyptian human rights activist Magdi Khalil concluded that “absolutely everything [jihad, suicide operations, etc.] revolves around sex in paradise,” adding, “if you look at the whole of Islamic history, you come up with two words: sex and violence.”

Indeed, Islam’s prophet Muhammad maintained that death during jihad not only blots out all sins—including sexual ones—but it actually gratifies them:

The martyr is special to Allah. He is forgiven [of all sins] from the first drop of blood [that he sheds]. He sees his throne in paradise, where he will be adorned in ornaments of faith. He will wed the ‘Aynhour [a.k.a. “voluptuous women“] and will not know the torments of the grave, and safeguards against the greater terror [hell]. … And he will copulate with 72 ‘Aynhour (see The Al Qaeda Reader, p. 143).

This goes to one of the many seeming contradictions in Islam: Muslim women must chastely be covered head-to-toe—yet, in the service of jihad, they are allowed to prostitute themselves. Lying is forbidden—but permissible to empower Islam. Intentionally killing women and children is forbidden—but permissible during the jihad. Suicide is forbidden—but permissible during the jihad—when it is called “martyrdom.”

One may therefore expect anything from would-be jihadis, regardless of how un-Islamic the means may otherwise seem.

Even so, this uncompromising mentality, which is prevalent throughout the Islamic world, especially along the frontlines of the jihad, is the same mentality that many Western leaders and politicians think can be appeased with just a bit more respect, well-wishing, and concessions from the West.

Such are the great, and disastrous, disconnects of our time.
