How a constitutional loophole could enable a Democratic power-grab.

The events in Ferguson, Missouri this past week have triggered calls for President Obama to push for an anti-race profiling-bill to prevent police from “disproportionately targeting ethnic minorities for investigation, interrogation and arrest” – Obama has helped pass such legislation when he was a state senator –Senator Ben Cardin (D-Md.) has urged Congress to introduce legislation that would “once and for all prohibit racial profiling by law enforcement officials.”

In spite of “racial profiling” more naturally being a state matter (insofar that it’s regulatable), such a power grab by the federal government is entirely possible due to the gradual expansion of the Thirteenth Amendment’s ban on slavery. Although relatively dormant during the first 100 years of its passage, the Thirteenth Amendment’s Section 2 enforcement power, which authorizes Congress to enact “appropriate legislation” to end the “badges and incidents of slavery,” has dramatically widened since the 1960s and could “justify” such a bill.

But Senator Cardin and his supporters, like Rep. John Conyers, may have to act quickly. Next term, the Supreme Court will likely take up US v. Cannon, a case which legal commentators say may result in the culling of this disconcertingly imprecise “badges and incidents”standard and pare back further legislative overreach by the federal government.

Ever since the Supreme Court began signaling to Congress that there may be some limits to what they can pass under the Commerce Clause, liberal legal scholars have argued that Section 2 can be used to justify everything from hate speech regulations and minimum-wage laws to bans on payday lending and even the regulation of environmental problems in black communities. The source of this overreach comes from the fact that Congress during the Amendment’s enactment failed to flesh out what exactly they meant by “badges and incidents” of slavery. Still, cases from that era treated the clause as narrowly relating to Section 1’s general ban on slavery; over and over again courts decided that legislation passed under Section 2 had to relate to “incidents” that could specifically lead to the re-establishment of slavery.

This was the approach until the racially charged 1960s when the Supreme Court decided in Jones v. Alfred H. Mayer & Co., a case involving housing discrimination, that the power to ban “badges and incidents” included the power to forbid anything that Congress determines might be “rationally related” to those badges and incidents; a standard that, according to critics, is deferential enough to give Congress the power to legislate on topics with little connection to slavery.

It was under this interpretation of the Thirteenth Amendment that Congress in 2009 passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Hate Crimes Prevention Act (HCPA) which sought to criminalize acts that “cause bodily injury to any person … because of the actual or perceived race, color, religion, or national origin of any person.” In Cannon, three white homeless males were charged under the Act because they used racial slurs after drunkenly assaulting another homeless male who was black – Apart from the nightmarish abuse one envisions from such a vague and flexible standard, this area of criminalization generally falls under the policing powers of individual states. Federalizing this part of the law is not only unnecessary and in violation of states’ rights, say critics, but it also raises double jeopardy concerns in that it allows for the federal government to re-prosecute a defendant already acquitted in state court. As was seen in the Zimmerman trial, this danger is especially serious when hysterical subjects like white-on-black “hate crime” are involved.

Since the passage of the HCPA, courts have expressed concern about its constitutional validity. Judges in Hatch v. US, a Tenth Circuit case involving white-on-Native American violence, acknowledged that, post-Jones, there were “few limits” on what conduct might be prohibited under the Act and that given slavery’s lasting effects, “nearly every hurtful thing one human could do to another and nearly every disadvantaged state of being might be analogized to slavery.” Last year’s landmark decision in Shelby County, a voting rights case involving a nearly identical enforcement power in the Fifteen Amendment, the Supreme Court noted that although Congress has the power to enforce the right to vote, it is not unlimited. Like the police power, the Court noted that states, not the federal government, have historically been given voting law powers and that “exceptional conditions” would have to exist to justify such an “extraordinary departure from the traditional course of relations between the States and the Federal Government.”

As civil rights expert Gail Heriot has noted, the approach the Supreme Court took in the late sixties “essentially interprets the Thirteenth Amendment as giving Congress a general police power over all conduct concerning race.” Given the cynical abuse of racial issues by the White House, the Democrats in Congress and groups like the ACLU and SPLC, it’s critical that the power to define what constitutes “incidents of slavery” or “racial profiling” always be closely scrutinized and kept away from potential politicization as much as possible.

K. Carl Smith explains his winning strategy for liberty at the Freedom Center's Texas Weekend.

Editor’s note: Below are the video and transcript to K. Carl Smith’s address at the Freedom Center’s 2014 Texas Weekend. The event took place May 2nd-4th at the Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas.

KCarl Smith from DHFC on Vimeo.

K. Carl Smith: Thank you so much. I want to thank David Horowitz for putting this event on. And thank you for coming.

If you’re a veteran, please stand. If you’re a veteran, please stand. I just want to say to you –

(Applause)

– on behalf of a grateful nation, thank you for your service to our beloved country. Thank you so much.

It’s an honor for me to be here. It really is. And I just want to say that I’m tickled to death that I was called and asked to come and share a message of empowerment — how we’re going to save this nation, how we’re going to broaden the base of the conservative movement and restore and secure the blessings of liberty for our posterity.

I want you to leave here empowered. I want you to leave here with a sense of knowing that there’s something that you can do to make a difference. You don’t have to wait for the next rally. You don’t have to wait for Candidate Smith. You are Candidate Smith. We don’t need to have just a politician be a Candidate Smith; that’s what we need to do. We got to learn how to engage and talk to our friends, our fellow citizens and our family members. Every family got somebody that’s a liberal.

(Laughter)

They make Thanksgiving times tough.

(Laughter)

It gets so tough, you get up and you leave, you go to the tiny table with the kids. I know that, I been there.

(Laughter)

(Applause)

You’re so funny.

But we all know that United States — we’re in a serious problem. There’s those who are in leadership now of our country — they want nothing more than to fundamentally transform our country into a European and socialist nation. And we must stop them. As conservatives, we can’t fail. We can’t fail.

(Applause)

We cannot fail. I mean, this is about our children and our grandchildren. And the other side, they’re playing for keeps. We got to stop them. We’re the only thing that’s standing between them and their goal of — like I say — of fundamentally transforming our beloved nation.

With that in mind, let me share this with you. I contend there are two major challenges facing the conservative movement. If we don’t find an answer to these two challenges, we’re toast. We’re history.

Challenge number one is this — we must find a way how to inspire — not recruit, but how to inspire more minorities — blacks, Latinos, Asians — to join the ranks of the conservative movement. How to inspire more women and young people to join the ranks of this movement.

According to a Gallup Poll survey that I read two months ago, maybe a month and a half ago, most Americans identified themselves as conservatives. More so than liberals. If that’s the case, why are we having such a difficult time to get people to join the ranks of our movement?

We don’t have a message problem; we have a messaging problem. There’s nothing wrong with our values. And compromising our values is not the answer. We’re not going to stop being who we are. So we don’t have a message problem; we really have a method problem. The way that we try to share our conservative values with people — we do it in a way where it doesn’t resonate. What happens — we’re the victim of the propaganda attacks of the Left.

So the first challenge is this — we got to inspire more minorities, more women and more young people to join the ranks of our movement. The second one is this — we got to find a way how to defeat the vile and the malicious attacks of the left-wing propaganda machine. They call us racists. They call us sellouts, homophobes, women-haters. They do that for a reason — to keep control of the narrative.

They accuse us what they’re guilty of. They call that projection. I’ll get into it later; it’s really a Satanic strategy. I’ll tell you now, Revelation 12:10 — Satan sits at the throne of God all day long, and all night long. He’s the accuser of the brethren to [maintain] control of the narrative.

But how do we turn this thing around, K. Carl? How can we save this nation in our lifetime? By 2014 and 2016? How can we do this?

What has to happen is this — we are in need of a conservative hero. We need someone who can reignite America’s passion for liberty and spark an emotional appeal for conservative values. The answer is Frederick Douglass.

You’re going to hear me share this with you — the Left don’t have an answer for Frederick Douglass.

(Laughter)

Once we get this Frederick Douglass Republican message on a national level, the liberals — they’re going to go back to France and start jumping out of windows. They don’t have an answer for it.

(Laughter)

Don’t have an answer for it.

The quintessential American Dream story, and the quintessential constitutional conservative, is Frederick Douglass. And thank God we have a literary legacy of the writings of Frederick Douglass to refute the lies and propaganda of the communist Left.

They don’t have an answer for Douglass. You remember Frederick Douglass? Born 1818, in Maryland. Frederick Douglass was born below poverty. See, Dr. Ben Carson and Herman Cain — they were born into poverty. But when you’re born into slavery, you’re born below poverty. You don’t even own your own body. He was a sub-zero-percenter. He was a slave for the first 20 years of his life. Never owned a pair of shoes until he was eight years old, never slept in a bed until the age of 10.

Frederick Douglass was home-schooled, self-taught. He learned how to read and write while he was a slave on a plantation. Ninety percent of black Americans at that time in history could not read or write.

He was a slave for the first 20 years of his life. Escaped from slavery in 1838. Wait a minute now — he escaped from slavery in — what did he escape from? Slave master providing Douglass with food, shelter, clothing, healthcare and a cell phone.

(Laughter)

(Applause)

Slavery by government’s still slavery. He escaped from that. He ran away from it. Slave master entitlements.

Now, while he was on that system, he used it to jumpstart his life. He learned how to read and write. In other words, he maximized educational opportunities [while as] a slave. Escaped from slavery age of 20, 1838.

Frederick Douglass, when he escaped from slavery, of course — people don’t know this, but Frederick Douglass was an advisor to five Republican Presidents. Five Republican Presidents. Abraham Lincoln, Ulysses S. Grant, James Garfield, Rutherford Hayes and Benjamin Harrison. That’s not bad for a man with zero days of formal schooling.

Frederick Douglass was a capitalist. Let me say that again, so you don’t think I said something else differently. Frederick Douglass was a capitalist. He a free-market entrepreneur. He wrote three autobiographies. Three autobiographies. He was a lecturer on the anti-slavery circuit.

When Frederick Douglass passed away in 1895, as the result of a heart attack, Frederick Douglass had amassed $300,000 in savings. $300,000 back then is more than $10 million today.

So here’s a man who was a zero-percenter. He was a slave for 20 years, getting that free stuff. He was a 47-percenter. He died a one-percenter.

(Laughter)

The Left don’t have an answer for Douglass.

(Applause)

But more importantly, we should thank God that we have a literary legacy of the writings of Frederick Douglass to refute the lies and propaganda of the Left.

I’m going to say something very provocative. Hold tight. I’m going to explain what I mean by that in a minute. Here’s my point. The political insight of Frederick Douglass is more important than the political insights of the Founding Fathers. That’s heresy, K. Carl.

(Laughter)

Blasphemy. Oh, I can’t believe he said that. Let me say that again, so you don’t think I said something differently.

(Laughter)

The political insight of Frederick Douglass is more important than the political insights of the Founding Fathers. Here’s why I say this. The Founding Fathers gave us two magnificent documents — the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Some of the Founding Fathers owned slaves. So when the Constitution was ratified, that’s not when they freed their slaves. Some of the slaves were freed after the death of some of the Founders. So when it comes to liberty, and the Founding Fathers, the Founding Fathers are tainted. And the Left plays on that. They demonize the Founding Fathers, demonize the Constitution.

On the other hand, Frederick Douglass did not own any slaves. He was a slave. And in his writings and his speeches, he affirmed both the Founding Fathers and he affirmed the Constitution. Douglass said on one occasion — about the Constitution, Douglass said — the Constitution reads “We the people.” It does not read “We the white people.”

(Laughter)

Douglass said — if black folks are people then, they are to be included as benefactors of this Constitution. Douglass closed that whole thing out by saying — the problem is not with the Constitution; the problem is in the application of the Constitution.

Ah. Douglass writes with a former slave perspective that the Left cannot attack. For the past five years, I’ve been traveling the country. And we do a workshop called Frederick Douglass Republican 101.

And let me explain this right quick, because y’all look — when I first got in yesterday, I had my sport coat on, and even this morning — this lapel pin says — FDR is not who you think — Frederick Douglass Republican.

(Laughter)

So I want to make sure I get that clear.

(Laughter)

Douglass is the answer. He is the answer to save this nation and broaden the base of the Republican Party. I am a conservative. I’m a Republican. But that’s not how I describe myself politically. The word “conservative,” the word “Republican ” — that word has a negative connotation because we’re losing the propaganda battle. Those words are synonymous with the word “racist.”

If you call yourself a black conservative, a black Republican, a Reagan conservative, a Reagan Republican, a Tea Party conservative, you might as well drop that last word and call yourself a black racist. Especially when you’re out here trying to engage.

See, the way we save this nation — Karl Rove has it partially right. He wants to do these ad campaigns and send us up through the atmosphere, what I call the Tokyo Rose strategy. That’s not how you win the war. We’ve got to grow a powerful ground force who know how to engage

So as a conservative, how do I talk to my friends, my family members and my fellow citizens about my conservative values without the fear of them calling me a racist? Or a sellout? And at the same time, I can inspire them to join the ranks of the movement? Because why? Most folks are conservative at heart. The answer’s Frederick Douglass.

So I’m a conservative. Matter of fact, if you call yourself a Constitutional conservative, you might as well call yourself a racist racist.

(Laughter)

And so when that happens, the wall is up. When you’re out here trying to engage, the wall is up. Black conservative. Black racist. The wall is up. We’re out here trying to engage. How do you stop that wall from coming up, where you can create an atmosphere of political dialog? I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican.

So when I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, that gives you a glimpse into my political psyche. And when I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, what I’m saying is I believe in the four life and party values of Frederick Douglass — number one — respect for the US Constitution; number two, respect for life; number three, I believe in limited government. In other words, I’d like to keep more of the money that I make. And four, I believe in personal responsibility.

So to become a Frederick Douglass Republican is not based on your skin color or your ethnicity. It is based on your embracing those four life-empowering values of Douglass. It’s not about color; it’s about values. It’s about values.

Been doing this for four years now. This is a game-changer. When someone says — I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, you can’t call them a racist. Because you believe what Douglass believed in.

You’ve heard of Senator Elbert Guillory, out of Louisiana? Man was a Democrat, switched; became a Republican? If he was here, he would tell you the reason why he became a Republican and left the Democrat Party — because the Democrat Party no longer represented his values of his grandmother, he would say.

Now, if you ask him what inspired him to come out the closet, he’d have to tell you that — I sat down with K. Carl Smith two months in advance. And the Louisiana GOP had been trying to get Senator Guillory to switch parties for three years. Because as a Democrat, Senator Guillory had a very, very conservative voting record. They tried to get him to switch parties.

What the Louisiana GOP couldn’t do in three years I did in 30 minutes. And I shared the Douglass message with him.

(Applause)

So this Frederick Douglass message is what gave him the inspiration and the grit to come out of the closet. So when he did this video, he embraced Douglass. Ah. Powerful approach. Powerful approach. And we’re growing.

So our goal is grow a nationwide army, if you will, of Frederick Douglass liberty messengers. Something like a Candidate Smith, but more powerful than a Candidate Smith.

You can’t play the race card on a Frederick Douglass Republican. You can’t say that a Frederick Douglass Republican don’t care about the poor. Nobody did more for the poor than Frederick Douglass.

When you look at those four voting blocs we did poorly in in the last general election — blacks, Latinos, women and young people — Douglass resonates with all the dem — Douglass has a universal appeal. Number one, I don’t care which victim category the Left will put people in; they cannot out-victimize Frederick Douglass.

(Laughter)

Number one. Dr. King is not the father of the Civil Rights movement. He is the son. The father is Frederick Douglass. Dr. King got many of his ideas from the writings of Frederick Douglass. The first ever women’s rights convention was held in Seneca Falls, New York in 1848. Susan B. Anthony was there, Elizabeth Cady Stanton was there. [Sedona Truth] was there. Two hundred women were there. Thirty-two men were invited. Of those 32 men, only one man was invited to speak — Frederick Douglass.

He was affectionately referred to as a women’s rights man. Because he worked with the women as part of the anti-suffrage movement. And they worked with him in the anti-slavery movement.

How did Douglass resonate with the Latino community, or minority community as a whole? In the 1800s, the Chinese were being brought to work on the railroad. They went to Douglass. And Douglass one time gave a speech entitled “Our Composite Nationality.” Douglass said in that speech — for humanity reasons, let them come to this country. This is the greatest country in the history of the world, where you can take your God-given gifts, your God-given talents, and you can take your obsession and make it a profession, improve the quality of life for your family. Douglass said let them come.

In that same speech, Douglass says there’s a process. Douglass said, number one — and I quote — he said — they must bow to the same law, bow as a form of respect, respect [of] law. Douglass said, number two, they must speak the same language — English. We got to have a common language for the marketplace.

Then, number three, Douglass said, they must understand the duties of citizenship in this country. The first duty of citizenship is obey the law, and to value and study the significance of our Constitution.

This is a game-changer. My parents are Frederick Douglass — I grew up in a Democrat household. I knew I was born black; I thought I was born a Democrat.

(Laughter)

And I was not converted to conservatism. I’ve always been one; I just didn’t know it. Just didn’t know it.

My brothers, now — everybody in my family — family reunion time in my family is different now, for me. I used to be isolated. Now I’m the center of attention. Because they want to know about this Frederick Douglass message.

My organization — we were contacted two weeks ago by 25 black pastors in Alabama, 13 black pastors in Milwaukee. I’m going there the end of this month. They want to be trained in this Frederick Douglass Republican message. Because reason why — if you’re a pastor of a predominantly black church, you’re crazy if you think you’re going to go at your church and talk about conservative this, conservative that. Why? It has a negative connotation. They think you lost your mind. You’re going to lose your members.

So they called us, my brother and I, and asked us to teach them how to advance the cause of conservatism without using the word. That’s Frederick Douglass Republican. The quintessential Constitutional conservative is Frederick Douglass.

So what we have to do — we got to grow this nationwide army. If you’re waiting for the RNC cavalry to come, the cavalry ain’t coming. We’re the cavalry. We’re the cavalry. We got to be empowered. We got to be equipped. And we got to be trained how to go out and make a difference in this country by spreading the message of liberty.

And I say to you — I got to say this to you — I contend that the greatest asset we have to save this nation is not being utilized. It’s not being utilized. And that greatest asset are white conservatives. The conservative [boot] is predominantly white. But no one up to now has taught them how to engage. How to get out here in the streets and engage folks in the trenches, without the fear of being called a racist or a sellout.

For the past five years now, we’ve been doing this training called Frederick Douglass Republican 101. It’s a three-hour training. And we’re teaching conservatives how to engage.

I am purposely traveling the country preaching to the choir. The choir got to be trained. The choir got to be equipped. The choir has to be empowered how to go out and get new choir members.

You’re heard of Forsyth County, Georgia? You know about that — that’s supposed to be a KKK haven. Matter of fact, it’s supposed to be so bad that one time Oprah Winfrey broadcast her show from Forsyth County, Georgia. Well, last year, the Forsyth County Tea Party and the Forsyth County GOP invited my organization to come, and they wanted to hear this Frederick Douglass message.

I couldn’t make it, so I sent my brother. I had a scheduling conflict. Okay, nobody laughed. That’s good. I’m serious — it was a scheduling conflict.

(Laughter)

He came back in one piece.

(Laughter)

And he went there and share this message of how to engage, teaching them how to engage.

The point is this — two months after he left, they decided — we’re going to try this Frederick Douglass Republican message of engagement. Within two months, they had inspired six blacks to join that local Tea Party. That’s a 600 percent increase.

(Laughter)

Now, they didn’t join as Tea Party active; they joined as Frederick Douglass Republicans, or Frederick Douglass liberty messenger.

You know the name Sharon Engle, out of Nevada, who ran against the Senate seat, ran for Senate against Harry Reid? I met Sharon last summer. Share the Frederick Douglass Republican message with her. She called me one day, and said — K Carl, I have a testimony. I said — what is it? She said — this Frederick Douglass Republican message works. I said — share your testimony with me; I want to hear it.

She said — I was in the Reno Airport. I was going to fly to Atlanta. Matter of fact, she was going to fly there to meet me. I wasn’t there. I was going to speak with her at an event. I couldn’t make it; I sent my brother to that one, too.

(Laughter)

And so, three black women approached her at the airport. They recognized Sharon. And they asked her — Mrs. Engle, where are your travels taking you this time? And Sharon had made up her mind — I’m going to try this Frederick Douglass Republican thing out.

So Sharon responded by saying — I’m traveling to Atlanta to meet a Frederick Douglass Republican friend of mine. The three women, the three black women, looked at her — Frederick Douglass was Republican? Said yes, he was Republican, and he believed in four life-empowering values — respect for the Constitution, respect for life; he believed in limited government, and he believed in personal responsibility. The three black women responded to Sharon by saying — hmm. Can you come to our church and share that message?

So, I think, about another couple months, maybe a month, I’ll be going to Reno, and going to that black church with Sharon to share that message. That’s what we have to do. It’s that powerful. It would never happen without Douglass.

Sharon was so excited, so empowered, that through her PAC, she bought 10,000 copies of our book to help me get the message out. It’s a game-changer.

If we’re serious about defending liberty, if we’re serious about defending the Constitution, we got to put Frederick Douglass as an integral part of our message.

See, what the Left does to keep control of the narrative — they do two things — they accuse, and they rewrite history, to control the narrative. They accuse us of being racist. They play the race card to control the narrative. Douglass trumps the race card. Douglas defeats those accusations of racism. That comes off the table.

They rewrite history. I mentioned this, for those that were in Florida with me when I spoke during a breakout session — the Left — they rewrite history. If you go to the Democrat Party’s website tonight — this is your homework assignment — go to democrats.org — their website. Go the About link. If you have a Smartphone, you can do it now. Go to the About link. Then there’s a sub-link, says — our history.

On their website, here’s what you’re going to find. And I quote — for more than 200 years, we have led the fight for civil rights.

(Laughter)

Come on. Women’s rights. Workers’ rights. When I read that, I said — pardon my language, since you started it — I said –hell.

(Laughter)

I said — slaves were workers.

They accuse, and they rewrite history. Thank God we have a literary legacy of the writings of Douglass to refute the lies and propaganda of the Left. Douglass was alive during that timeframe. Two hundred years ago was 1814. Douglass was born in 1818. So this timeframe, this 200 years that they’re talking about — when they said they led the fight for civil rights — Douglass was alive back then. He wrote about these things.

Matter of fact, Douglass wrote an essay, an editorial, called “The Slavery Party.” And I quote — Douglass said — the best representation of slavery in politics is the Democrat Party.

So somebody is a liar. Either it’s Douglass, or it’s the leadership of the Democrat Party. The rank-and-file folks of the Democrat Party — they don’t know this. It’s the leadership, from the White House to the state houses. They deceive. They distort. They accuse and rewrite history. We have to get control of the narrative. How do you take control of the narrative?

In this workshop — I’m going to give a little training right now. When I say — well, let me put it this way — I used to do liberal talk shows. I don’t do them anymore, because I’m not invited.

(Laughter)

Wherever I do a show, or whenever I go speak, and I know I’m going to get questions — especially a show — before even the conservative shows I go on — before we take any phone calls, I have to set up my perimeter. There’s some things I know I must say first. If not, they’re going to attack me.

When I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican — and that’s not the same thing as Republican — I’ll get to that in a minute — I know there’s three things that I must say right after that. When I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, and it’s not the same thing as Republican — see, the Republican Party today does not resemble the party of Frederick Douglass, in Douglass’s time, when it was the defender of the Constitution and it made the plight of the poor and the working poor a legislative priority. Not in terms of keeping the poor on entitlements, but to elevate the poor to become employees and entrepreneurs.

My organization and this movement — we are anti-status quo Republican Party. We don’t want the Republican Party to stay the same; we want it to improve, so we can be a viable political force again.

So when I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, three things I got to say right after that. [The] best way to put it is this way. Let me add this, too. I got to make sure, when I say this, you really get it. I don’t want you to wait two weeks and then you get it; you got to get it before you leave here.

(Laughter)

Let me put it this way. Okay. I wrote a book. The book is entitled “Frederick Douglass Republican: The Movement to Re-Ignite America’s Passion for Liberty.” This is not a dissertation on the political views of Douglass. This is a conservative action handbook. It’s a book that gives you information so you can engage.

I take those four life-empowering values of Douglass — the Constitution, his respect for life, limited government, and personal responsibility. And painstakingly, I went through a lot of the writings of Douglass. And I give you five quotes what Douglass said about the Constitution, what Douglass said about respect for life. What did Douglass say about limited government? Douglass said on one occasion — Douglass said — the duty of a national government — he said the first duty of the national government is protection. He said that. Then, the five things Douglass said about personal responsibility. So this book gives you information.

Then I wrote a companion guide to the book. The companion guide that comes with the book is titled the “Most Asked Challenges.” In this companion guide, I identify the 12 most asked challenges that we face as conservatives and as Republicans, and how you take that challenge, you turn it around, you make it a teachable moment, and you inspire that person to join the ranks of the movement.

So you’re out here engaging. You got to engage, we got to get in the trenches. Karl Rove is doing this stuff in the political ads; we’re in the trenches.

And somebody asks you — are you a conservative, what would you say, before you met me?

(Laughter)

If you say yes, you just lost. That word has a negative connotation. I’m not saying you don’t ever use a word. But before you use it, you got to make sure you define your definition. Because most folks have a different definition of conservatism.

When I was a Democrat, and grew up in a Democrat family — when you said “conservative,” I’m thinking about George Wallace, Bull Connor. Their definition of conservatism was this — they wanted to secure the doctrine of their racist fathers. As Republicans, our definition is different. We’re using the same word, but our definition is different. We want to secure the values of the Founding Fathers, not the racist fathers.

K. Carl, you’re conservative. I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. There’s a difference between the — that’s the wrong one. K. Carl, are you a conservative? I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. And I believe in the four life-empowering values of Frederick Douglass — respect for the Constitution, respect for life — I go through that pattern. And you got to turn it around on them — do you share the values of Douglass? Most folks in America would say yes. And you say to them — guess what? That makes you a conservative. Better still, that makes you a Frederick Douglass Republican. And that’s the hook. That’s the hook.

You can do this. I need you to stop believing the lie that because you are a white conservative you cannot engage somebody of a different ethnicity. Stop believing that lie. It’s not true.

I know some black conservatives who cannot engage black folks. I was one of them. When John McCain won the nomination, 2008, I went out and bought me a McCain-Palin T-shirt. Caught myself going to the ‘hood, and going to engage.

(Laughter)

I was engaged, all right. I didn’t realize it was a bull’s eye. This was before God gave me Frederick Douglass.

(Laughter)

I was ostracized, I was humiliated. I was almost decapitated.

(Laughter)

I said — God, you got to give me something else. And God started giving me Douglass. And God started perfecting this message in me.

You’re out here engaging. Somebody asks you if you’re a Republican, what would you say?

Audience: Frederick Douglass Republican.

K. Carl Smith: Before you met me?

(Laughter)

If you said Republican, you just lost. Again, we’re losing that propaganda battle; that word has a negative connotation. K. Carl, are you a Republican? I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. There’s a difference between the two. You don’t need to write this down; it’s in the book.

(Laughter)

So, what I’ve learned over the past five years — the way you change hearts and minds — I think it was Vladimir Lenin who said this — he said — most of the people who support communism are not even communists. I’ll take it a step further. Most of the people who support the liberal agenda or the Democrat Party aren’t even liberals. They’re conservative at heart. My parents are not socialists. They’re conservative at heart.

So what I’ve learned is — you got to have a message that provides some information and gives them inspiration. Information and inspiration. Information and inspiration. The Information — that’s the writings of Douglass. Douglass wrote about the Three-Fifths Clause. I’m a graduate of a historical black college. I was taught — and they still teach this today — that the Founding Fathers gave us slavery in the Constitution, referring to the Three-Fifths Clause, saying that blacks were three fifths of a human being. I was taught that.

But in 1861, in Glasgow, Scotland, Douglass was in a debate. Douglass gave clarity to the Three-Fifths Clause. It’s in the book. And Douglass said — that’s not what that was about, Douglass said. Douglass said the Three-Fifths Clause has nothing — was not about saying that black people were not human, but it was a compromise used by the Northern free states upon the Southern slave states that limit their way of how they were counting their population. It limit their congressional representation. Douglass wrote about that. Thank God we got a literary legacy of the writings of Douglass.

You got to become Frederick Douglass liberty messengers. You got to be willing to step outside the conservative closet and step into the arena of the political dialog confident and informed. You’re the army. You’re the army. Just got to be empowered, equipped and trained how to do it.

We’re doing this all over the country. Because we are a grassroots organization. Grass, grass group. We got very little grass; we got a lot of bald spots in our yard, but we’re coming up. And we’re a game-changer.

Of the 60,000 people right now who’ve been trained in this methodology — and they refer to themselves as Frederick Douglass Republicans, or Frederick Douglass liberty messengers — 59 percent of them are white. Fifty-nine percent. It’s not about color; it’s about values.

And they’re learning how to engage, how to trump the race card. That’s a big one. How many of you are sick and tired of being called a racist, and you know you’re not one? This is time — how you trump the race card. You got to have Douglass.

But what you have to do — you got to carefully study, to show yourself approved. Just can’t say this — I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. You have to get K. Carl’s book.

(Laughter)

You know what I’m saying — and understand the message that’s in it.

And here’s my capitalist joke. The books come as a set. And the books are free. The autograph inside each book is $20, though.

(Laughter)

I’m a capitalist, what can I say?

But this is the answer. And my message to you is this — there is hope. And the way we win this whole battle for the future of our children and our grandchildren — each one of us must be willing to become a Frederick Douglass liberty messenger, and learn how to engage. How to take the issue of race; put that on the table. How to take the class warfare tax; put that on the table.

What’d they say about us? They said that Republicans and conservatives don’t care about the poor. Here’s how you respond to that, and it’s in here. K. Carl, conservatives, Republicans, don’t care about the poor. Remember, they’re going to attack you. I never said I was a conservative or a Republican; I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican. Nobody did more for the poor than Frederick Douglass.

When the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, technically freeing four million blacks from slavery, the government came to Douglass and asked Douglass — what shall we do with the negro, since all these black folks are going to be free? Douglass — in an editorial called “What the Black Man Wants,” he said — what do you mean, what should we do with — don’t you think you did enough? You made him a slave. Douglass said leave him alone, and mind your own business.

(Applause)

That’s what Douglass said. Leave him alone, and mind your own business. Douglass said — my gosh, you didn’t do anything special for the Irish.

(Laughter)

Douglass is the answer.

What are your questions? What are your thoughts? I’ll be happy to address — yes, ma’am?

(Applause)

Unidentified Audience Member: Recently on my radar was a children’s animated storybook about — it was either Bastiat or “Democracy in America.” And I was just thinking, that would be a really cool project also to translate the literary legacy of Frederick Douglass to children.

K. Carl Smith: Oh, that’s what they were doing. I appreciate your question.

We have to — our goal is to get this message into the culture. In addition to doing children’s books, we’re working on a Douglass movie. Not a documentary; we’re working on a Douglass movie.

Matter of fact, I just took a look at the treatment last night. I interviewed six screenwriters. Five of them want to do a documentary, one wants to do a movie. I wanted the movie guy. Because what I’m thinking, what we got to do is this — when people come and see this movie, they must be entertained and educated, [in order] to being educated.

That’s what we’re going to do. And that’s part of this whole thing as part of our goal to save this nation.

Yes, ma’am?

Unidentified Audience Member: Not too many people are aware of the fact –

K. Carl Smith: Yes.

Unidentified Audience Member: — that in the state of Texas, the Republican Party was actually founded by 120 blacks and 20 whites. And President Bush put more blacks into public office than any other President. And people aren’t aware of that. Nor are the black community aware –

K. Carl Smith: That’s right.

Unidentified Audience Member: — of the fact that when the Civil Rights Act was enforced and was signed into law, none of the Democrats voted for it. It was all voted for by Republicans. And many black people –

K. Carl Smith: Majority [of them].

Unidentified Audience Member: — should recognize the fact that their grandparents were Republican.

K. Carl Smith: Yes.

Unidentified Audience Member: So these are facts that I would hope and pray that you’re able to transmit to your audiences, as well as the fact that — you know, as a Jew, people have asked me repeatedly — how come you voted for Obama, you Jewish people voted for Obama? And I believe it was Dennis Prager who said — or it may’ve been Rabbi Lapin — that many Jewish people have this need to show how ecumenical we are. And they forget that Moses’s wife was pitch-black.

And my granddaughter — who recently came back from Ethiopia on a tour of the Jewish community there, which is mostly now in Israel — was amazed, my granddaughter was amazed that the black Jews of Ethiopia were surprised that there were white –

K. Carl Smith: Jews.

Unidentified Audience Member: — white Jews.

K. Carl Smith: Yeah.

Unidentified Audience Member: So, this is just information.

K. Carl Smith: This is key.

Unidentified Audience Member: I don’t have a question. But I do want you to please remind — so the black community –

K. Carl Smith: Here’s what has to happen. I can’t do this alone. My message to you is this — you need to be empowered, trained and equipped how to deliver this message. How to start flipping people in your own circle of influence. That’s what this message is. Stop believing the notion you got to have a black person to go talk to a black person about conservatism and the Republican Party message for it to work.

Here’s what I’ve learned — when someone that’s not a black American says — I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican — in other words, it’s more powerful when you do it than when I do it.

Because why? What do we hear through the media? Conservatives are racist. White conservatives are racist. Republicans are racist. They have no redemptive qualities in their life; they’ll always be racist. Then you have one that carefully studied, showed themselves approved, they bought K. Carl’s book. And they said that I’m a Frederick Douglass — and now you got a white person saying — I hold Frederick Douglass in high esteem.

Now, you just took control of the narrative. I can’t call you a racist. You’re driving the narrative now. Now you’re changing hearts and minds. That’s what it does.

Yes, ma’am?

Unidentified Audience Member: Okay. First of all, would you write a blog for me for PolitiChicks?

K. Carl Smith: Okay. Okay, I will.

Unidentified Audience Member: Yeah. Do.

K. Carl Smith: Okay. And I know — well, you told me I’m going to do it, and so I’ll do it.

(Laughter)

Unidentified Audience Member: Okay, good.

And also, when are you going to do a one-on-one class in Los Angeles, where we need it desperately?

K. Carl Smith: Here’s what we’re doing. And the way we got to do — you know, you got to invite us to come. You got to invite us to come, and we’ll do that.

Unidentified Speaker: FOA.

Unidentified Speaker: FOA.

K. Carl Smith: What’s FOA?

Unidentified Speaker: Oh, that’s the secret thing we’ll tell you –

K. Carl Smith: Okay, FOA.

(Laughter)

We do this all across the country. We do it based on invitation. Does the message make sense to you? I kind of hit on some things. But this is the answer — we can’t do it without Douglass. And thank God we have Douglass on our side to refute the lies and propaganda of the Communist Left. They don’t have an answer for it.

So thank you for inviting me, Michael.

(Applause)

Unidentified Speaker: Question.

K. Carl Smith: Yes?

Unidentified Speaker: K. Carl, how can they buy your book?

K. Carl Smith: I have a — I guess I have a table out here. And I have the books with me. You get, again, both sets. They come as a set. The books are free. The autograph in each book — don’t say you want a book without autograph; all of them [is] pre-signed — I’m just kidding. But I’ll be out here with a table.

And I want to look at my notes right quick — I want to make sure I covered everything. I got to make sure.

Unidentified Speaker: What were the last four points? You said, when you get questions –

K. Carl Smith: Oh, here’s what happened. When I say that I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican, there are three things you must say right after that to take control of the narrative.

Number one is this — I’m a Frederick Douglass Republican; that’s not the same thing as Republican. Republican Party today do not represent the party of Douglass. Number two, we need people in both political parties with a Frederick Douglass perspective.

I think the RNC’s making a huge mistake. They’re trying to recruit people to become Republicans. That’s not what you want to do. What you want to do — you want to inspire them to vote their values. They’ll figure out where they want to land. You go ahead and try to get a Catholic to become a Protestant. You got to go through the same kind of emotions when somebody — trying to get them to become a Democrat, Republican. We need people in both parties with a Frederick Douglass perspective.

And last thing is this — we got to make the plight of the poor a legislative priority, and elevate them to become employees and entrepreneurs.

I’m here to tell you, the Left has no answer for this whatsoever. But you got to carefully study, to show yourself approved.

I’ll be outside, at my table. Thank you.

(Applause)

In reply to a recent article in which I disclosed some neglected facts concerning race and slavery, a reader inquired as to the point in unveiling them. Before answering, let’s review some of the tidbits that I shared in the interest of that “honest discussion” of race that the Eric Holders of the world continually charge the rest of us with deferring:

(1) For centuries, millions of white European Christians were enslaved by Asian and African Muslims;

(2) The first slaves in Colonial America were white;

(3) Blacks were in America prior to slavery;

(4) A significant portion of African blacks who eventually became slaves in America were already Christian;

(5) These black slaves had been converted by the African blacks who sold them into bondage;

(6) During the antebellum period, there existed several thousand slave owners who were black;

(7) The first slave master in America was a black man, Anthony Johnson, an Angolan who had originally been sold into slavery by his fellow Africans to Arabs and who owned black and white servants.

There is still other historical “trivia” that defy the conventional narrative on race and slavery.

The civilized world, justly, expresses outrage over the abduction and enslavement of hundreds of young Nigerian schoolgirls at the hands of the African Islamic terrorist organization, Boko Haram. But the stone-cold truth of the matter is that this sort of thing has been transpiring in Africa from time immemorial. For millennia upon millennia, black Africans have seized upon and enslaved other black Africans. And, as notes famed Islamic scholar, Bernard Lewis, among others, from the dawn of Islam, Muslims have abducted and enslaved non-Muslims—both black and white.

It is estimated that well over 100 million black Africans died over the span of 14 centuries as they were marched across the scalding hot sands of the Sahara Desert by those Arab raiders and traders intent upon reducing them to a life of bondage in foreign lands.

In spite of the tremendous number of blacks transported to the Middle East, the latter consists of relatively few blacks today. Why? For one, African boys were frequently forced to undergo castration, a practice so barbaric that but a tiny percentage survived it. Those who did, however, fetched a purchasing price several times that of their peers who were not made into eunuchs.

Another consideration accounting for the miniscule black population in the contemporary Middle East is that African girls were sold as concubines and into sex slavery to Arab masters. This reflected the Islamic belief—most recently articulated by the leader of Boko Haram but first stated in the Koran and practiced by Muhammad—that girls can and should become wives once they are nine years of age. Upon begetting their masters’ offspring, many eventually became assimilated into their families.

But, thirdly, the tragic fact is that many slaves were simply worked to death.

What follows are some other fascinating truths that are a “must” for any truly honest discussion of race and slavery:

While whites were by no means unique in practicing slavery, they were indeed unique insofar as they were the first people in all of history to have developed a moral revulsion against this age-old institution. No one liked being abducted and enslaved by others. But many of these same unfortunates wouldn’t have hesitated to do the same to others if the opportunity had arisen. Whites, more specifically, English white Christians, personified and led by the conservative William Wilberforce, succeeded in prevailing upon the British Empire—the most economically and militarily powerful presence on the planet at that time—to abolish slavery, not just in England or even within the Empire, but in every area of the globe over which Britain could hope to exercise any of its influence.

More scandalously, the British met with much resistance from Arabs, Asians, and Africans. Bernard Lewis relays an exchange between a British Consul General in Morocco and the Sultan of that land that typifies precisely the challenges to its campaign against slavery that the English had to surmount. When the Sultan was asked what he had done to relegate to the dustbin of history the trade in human flesh, he “replied, in a letter expressing evident astonishment, that ‘the traffic in slaves is a matter on which all sects and nations have agreed from the time of the sons of Adam…up to this day.’” The Sultan added that slavery’s permissibility was “manifest to both high and low and requires no more demonstration than the light of day.”

Incidentally, England’s success was a long time coming, for in some parts of the non-European world, places like India and Saudi Arabia, slavery didn’t become illegal until the 1940s and 1960s, respectively.

My reader who inquired as to the “point” in raising these facts at no time denies any of them. Thus, he confirms what some of us have long suspected: in their tireless promotion of the conventional orthodoxy on race and slavery in America, neither he nor his ilk has ever been in the least bit interested in history for its own sake. Rather, there has always been a “point” to their campaign, the advancement of a political agenda involving fictions concerning perpetual black suffering, white oppression, and white guilt.

The facts to which I allude here frustrate that agenda.

And this, by the way, is “the point” of mentioning them.

Islam is not the victim here.

It is a common refrain of pious Muslims in the face of atrocities done by other Muslims in the name of Islam that Islam must not be shamed. Whenever an Islamic atrocity potentially dishonors Islam, non-Muslims are asked to agree that ‘This is not Islamic’ so that the honor of Islam can be kept pristine. The real issue, however, is not what would be good or bad for Islam’s reputation; Islam is not the victim here. The pressing issue is not to get people to think well of Islam, but how, for instance, in the case of Boko Haram’s kidnapping of the Nigerian schoolgirls, the girls can be rescued and, above all, how Boko Haram’s murderous rampage can be halted.

Qasim Rashid, an American Muslim, recently published on FoxNews.com a heart-felt expression of deep distress at the kidnapping of Nigerian girls by Boko Haram (‘What would Muhammad say to Boko Haram’). He declared that Muhammad himself would not recognize this group as acting in line with his teachings:

“Boko Haram’s claim that Islam motivates their kidnappings is no different than Adolf Hitler’s claim that Christianity motivated his genocide. This terrorist organization acts in direct violation of every Islamic teaching regarding women.”

Qasim Rashid is not the only Muslim who has been speaking out in support of the kidnapped girls, while denying that their plight has anything to do with Islam (see here).

Qasim Rashid is a member of the Ahmaddiyah community, which is regarded as unorthodox by most Muslims. Indeed Ahmaddiyahs are often severely persecuted for their beliefs in Islamic nations. Although Qasim Rashid does not speak for mainstream Islam, he is nevertheless to be commended for speaking up against Boko Haram’s repugnant acts.

But does the claim that Boko Haram is not Islamic hold up to scrutiny?

What counts as a valid manifestation of Islam? Ahmaddiyah beliefs can be considered Islamic, for those who hold them do so on the basis of a reasoned interpretation of Islamic canonical sources, even if the majority of Muslims reject them as Muslims. By the same token, the beliefs of Boko Haram must also be considered a form of Islam, for they too are held on the basis of a reasoned interpretation of Islamic canonical sources.

It needs to be acknowledged that Boko Haram has not arisen in a vacuum. As Andrew Bostom has pointed out, violent opposition to non-Islamic culture has been a feature of Nigerian Islam for centuries. Today this hatred is being directed against Western education and secular government, but in the past it was indigenous Africa cultures which were targeted for brutal treatment, including enslavement and slaughter. The modern revival of absolutist Sharia-compliant Islam in the north of Nigeria is a process which has deep roots in history. It has also been in progress for decades. Khalid Yasin, an African American convert to Islam and globe-trotting preacher, waxed lyrical about the advance of Sharia law in Nigeria on Australian national radio in 2003:

“If we look at the evolution of the Sharia experiment in Nigeria for instance. It’s just a wonderful, phenomenal experience. It has brought about some sweeping changes, balances, within the society, regulations in terms of moral practices and so many things. …What did the Sharia provide? Always dignity, protection, and the religious rights?”

But let us consider the evidence Qasim Rashid gives for his view that Muhammad would disown Boko Haram. His arguments can be summarized as follows:

‘Boko Haram violates the Koran 24:34 [i.e. Sura 24:33] which commands, “and force not your women to unchaste life,” i.e. [this is] a condemnation of Boko Haram’s intention to sell these girls into prostitution.’

‘They violate Koran 4:20 [i.e. Sura 4:19] which declares, “it is not lawful for you to inherit women against their will; nor should you detain them,” i.e. a specific repudiation of Boko Haram’s kidnapping and detention.’

‘Prophet Muhammad’s dying words embodied these commandments. He implored, “Do treat your women well and be kind to them, for they are your partners and committed helpers.”’

The seeking of knowledge is an obligation on all Muslims, including ‘secular knowledge’.

‘Islam … commands female education.’

Although Qasim Rashid’s views are sincerely held, his reasoning is weak. Let us consider his points in order.

Compel not your slave-girls — Sura 24:33

Contra Qasim Rashid, Sura 24:33 does not say ‘force not your women’ but:

“… compel not your slave-girls to prostitution when they desire to keep chaste, in order to seek the frail goods of this world’s life. And whoever compels them, then surely after their compulsion Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (The Quran translation used here is cited from a translation by Ahmaddiya scholar Muhammad Maulana Ali).

The word translated ‘slave-girl’ here can also mean a young woman, but in this passage it clearly refers to female slaves. A standard interpretation of this verse by Sunni commentators – such as Ibn Kathir – is that if someone owns a slave girl, he should not prostitute her, but if he does, Allah will forgive her.

Strictly speaking, this verse does not appear to apply to the situation of the Nigerian girls taken by Boko Haram. The outrage is that they were taken captive and enslaved in the first place, becoming what the Koran refers to as ‘those whom your right hand possesses’. That they may have been raped by their captors seems highly likely, but this is not the same thing as being prostituted to produce income for their owners. Islam permits men to have sexual intercourse with their slave women, and also to sell them into the service of another, but it frowns on hiring them out for prostitution.

In Sura 33:50 of the Koran it is stated that it was permissible for Muhammad to have sex with his female slaves:

“O Prophet! We have made lawful to thee thy wives to whom thou hast paid their dowries, and those whom thy right hand possesses, out of those whom Allah has given thee as prisoners of war”,

and in verse 23:6 this prerogative is extended to Muslim believers:

“Successful indeed are the believers … who restrain their sexual passions except in the presence of their mates [their wives], of those whom their right hands possess.”

The actions and teaching of Muhammad also support the practice of sexual slavery for women taken captive in jihad. Chapter 547 of the Sahih Muslim, a revered collection of sayings of Muhammad considered reliable by most Muslims, is entitled ‘It is permissible to have sexual intercourse with a captive woman…’. Abdul Hamid Siddiqi, the translator and editor of the Sahih Muslim, added the following footnote to this chapter:

“As for the expression malakat aymanukum (those whom your right hands possess) [it] denotes slave-girls, i.e. women who were captured in the Holy War … sexual intercourse with these women is lawful with certain conditions.”

Boko Haram is reported to be intending to sell the girls at a slave market. This is no doubt based upon the precedent of Muhammad’s own practice. There are many examples from Muhammad’s actions and those of his companions which could be cited. For example, after putting the men of the Jewish Quraiza tribe in Medina to the sword, Muhammad’s biographer Ibn Isaq reports that he sold some of the Jewish women and used the money to buy horses and weapon:

“Then the apostle divided the property, wives, and children of B. Qurayza among the Muslims, and he made known on that day the shares of horse and men, and took out the fifth. … Then the apostle sent Sa‘d b. Zayd al-Ansari brother of b. ‘Abdu’l-Ashhal with some of the captive women of B. Qurayza to Najd and he sold them for horses and weapons. (Sirat Rasul Allah, by Ibn Ishaq)

The rest of the Jewish slaves were divided among the Muslims. Muhammad himself took one of the leading Jewish women, Rayhana, for his concubine, but she refused to marry him:

The apostle had chosen one of their women for himself, Rayhana d. ‘Amr b. Khunafa, one of the women of B. ‘Amr b. Qurayza, and she remained with him until she died, in his power. The apostle had proposed to marry her and put the veil on her, but she said: ‘Nay, leave me in your power, for that will be easier for me and for you.’” (Sirat Rasul Allah, by Ibn Ishaq).

Rayhana, who became Muhammad’s concubine by capture in warfare, is revered to this day as one of the ‘wives’ of the prophet of Islam.

In addition to the support for this practice found in the Islamic canon, historical sources give ample evidence that enslavement of women as captives of war and resulting sexual servitude has been a persistent feature of Islamic warfare conducted by pious Muslims. Consider for example the report of Imad ad-Din al-Isfahani, Saladin’s chronicler, of the fate of 8,000 Christian women in Jerusalem who were unable to pay a ransom for their release after the conquest of that city by Saladin:

“Women and children together came to 8,000 and were quickly divided up among us, brining a smile to Muslim faces at their lamentations. How many well-guarded women were profaned, how many queens were ruled and nubile girls married, and noble women given away, and miserly women forced to yield themselves, and women who had been kept hidden stripped of their modesty, and serious women made ridiculous, and women kept in private now set in public, and free women occupied, and precious ones used for hard work, and pretty things put to the test, and virgins dishonoured and proud women deflowered, and lovely women’s red lips kissed, and dark women prostrated, and untamed ones tamed, and happy ones made to weep!” (Arab Historians of the Crusades, ed. by Francesco Gabrieli, pp. 96-97).

It is has been widely accepted by Islamic jurists down the ages that Islam permits Muslim men to have sex with women who have come into their possession through being taken captive in war, either because they personally captured them, or because they acquired them by purchase or gift from another. Indeed this was the legal basis in Islam for the harem system: the women of the harem were mainly sourced from jihad campaigns waged against non-Muslim communities.

It is simply incredible that Qasim Rashid would quote a verse which prohibits Muslim men from hiring out their concubines for sex as evidence that Islam is against the use of sexual violence against captive women. If we are supposed to deny the label ‘Islamic’ to Boko Haram, are we also to conclude that Saladin and even Muhammad himself cannot be called Muslims?

Inheriting and troubling wives — Sura 4:19

Sura 4:19 is another passage cited by Qasim Rashid. Maulana Muhammad Ali’s translation throws a different light on this passage:

“O you who believe, it is not lawful for you to take women as heritage [i.e. to inherit them] against their will. Nor should you straiten them by taking part of what you have given them …”.

The standard explanation of this verse is that it prohibited two practices: a man ‘inheriting’ the wife of his male relative, which had apparently been a pagan Arab custom before Islam; and oppressing one’s wife in order to make her seek a divorce, so that she will pay back the bride-price. This latter practice had been occurring in Muhammad’s time, because if a Muslim man divorced a wife, he was not entitled to any financial compensation, but if a woman initiated divorce proceedings, she had to compensate him for her bride-price. (See Ibn Kathir and also Muhammad Ali’s explanation in footnotes which both concur with the explanation given here.)

Sura 4:19 is thus not a prohibition against detaining women: it has absolutely nothing to do with the situation of the captured Nigerian girls.

Treating Your Women Well:

With regard to Muhammad’s command to Muslims to treat their wives well, these words could apply as an instruction for the men who have married the captured girls, taking them as their wives. It says nothing, however, about the issue of their capture, enslavement or sale.

On Seeking Secular Knowledge:

With regard to Qasim Rashid’s next point, most pious Muslims would agree that seeking knowledge, including Western scientific knowledge, is an obligation for Muslims. Most Muslims do not agree with Boko Haram’s desire to banish all learning apart from Islamic instruction. However antipathy to non-Islamic education and knowledge has had a long history in Islamic thought. This is not a new idea, nor even a particularly aberrant one, but is part of the broad range of Islamic theological perspectives.

Learned Muslim Women in the Past:

With regard to Qasim Rashid’s fifth argument, it is of course possible to find examples in history of capable Muslim women who were well-educated. On the other hand there are traditions of Muhammad which denigrate the intellectual capacity of women, such as the following:

Once Allah’s Apostle went out to [to pray] … Then he passed by the women and said, “O women! Give alms, as I have seen that the majority of the dwellers of Hell-fire were you (women).” They asked, “Why is it so, O Allah’s Apostle ?” He replied, “You curse frequently and are ungrateful to your husbands. I have not seen anyone more deficient in intelligence and religion than you …” The women asked, “O Allah’s Apostle! What is deficient in our intelligence and religion?” He said, “Is not the evidence of two women equal to the witness of one man?” They replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her intelligence. Isn’t it true that a woman can neither pray nor fast during her menses?” The women replied in the affirmative. He said, “This is the deficiency in her religion.” (Sahih Bukhari, Book 6, Hadith 301)

In any case, asking what Muhammad would say on the subject of educating women is irrelevant to what Boko Haram has done. It did not attack the girls’ school because Boko Haram believes women should not be educated. They did it because they are opposed to secular, non-Islamic education per se, and they believe they have the right to kill, enslave and plunder people who they count as their enemies. They also wish to terrorize their enemies by stirring up as much fear and emotional trauma to them as possible.

Islam Is Not The Victim Here:

Qasim Rashid writes: “Do not give the terrorists known as Boko Haram the dignity of attributing any religion to their name.” This is a common refrain of pious Muslims in the face of atrocities done by other Muslims in the name of Islam: whenever an atrocity dishonors Islam, non-Muslims are asked to agree that ‘This is not Islamic’ so that the honor of Islam can be kept pristine.

However the real issue is not what might be good or bad for Islam’s reputation. The sight of Boko Haram’s leader saying on video that ‘by Allah’ he will go to market and sell the captive girls, because his religion permits him to do so, has already dishonored Islam. Muhammad and Saladin, by their actions, could equally be considered to have dishonored Islam, but this is beside the point. The real challenge here is not preserving the honor of Islam, but what can be done to counter Boko Haram.

What is crystal clear is that nothing can be gained by denial of the truth about the jihadis’ religious ideology. Other Muslims may — and do! — disagree with Boko Haram’s beliefs. That is a not a bad thing. But what will not help anyone – least of all the victims of this outrage – is putting forward weak arguments that no-one should judge Islam on the basis of Boko Haram’s actions. That line of thought is completely irrelevant to addressing the problem.

Islam is not the victim here. The pressing issue here is not to get people to think well of Islam, but how these girls can be rescued, and above all how Boko Haram’s murderous rampage can be halted.

To achieve progress with this second goal it is necessary first and foremost to acknowledge the theological character of the challenge. In historical contexts, such as colonial India and the Dutch East Indies, colonial governments were able to turn the tide on long-running and costly Islamic insurgencies by acknowledging the religious character of the challenge they were facing – that they were up against a jihad. This enabled them to pursue appropriate strategies, such as:

Getting leading mainstream Muslim scholars to issue credible rulings (fatwas) which declared the specific jihad insurgency to be sinful and forbidden by Islam. (Such fatwas continue to be used by Islamic regimes today to counter their home-grown insurgents.)

Making it a primary military objective to pursue and take out the ideologues – Islamic clerics – who were driving the insurgency through recruitment and religious formation of the jihadi combatants. It is essential to cut off the flow of ideology. US Navy Seals may be able to go in and rescue the kidnapped girls, but many more girls will continue to be kidnapped until the transmission of the ideology is disrupted.

Attempting to persuade non-Muslim Westerners that Islam is not the problem actually makes it much harder to formulate an effective strategy for countering jihadi insurgencies. The aversion of the US State Department to acknowledge that Boko Haram was an Islamic religious movement – they only classified it as a banned terrorist organization in late 2013 – has had a crippling effect on America’s ability to make a difference in Nigeria (see Nina Shea’s analysis).

Boko Haram will not be contained by sending in hostage negotiation experts, or making public statements about poverty, disadvantage and ‘poor government service delivery’. These are not the cause of all this hatred. Acknowledging the potent religious roots of the insurgency movement is the basic first step in shaping a credible response. To accept this is not the same as saying that Boko Haram’s interpretation of Islam is correct. One can be completely agnostic about what is or is not true Islam but yet grasp that Boko Haram is an interpretation of Islam, which at least for its followers has become the most compelling interpretation around. Finding a solution to the challenge of Boko Haram can only start from this premise.

Where an "honest discussion" about race should start.

“The truth is harsh.”

So spoke the philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, back in the 19th century.

On no topic is the truth harsher than on that of race.

The Eric Holders of the world incessantly bemoan the absence of an “honest discussion of race” in America. But such a discussion, beginning, as it must, with a discussion of slavery, is actually the last thing that they could afford to have, for such a discussion would include facts that would undermine much of the ideologically-invaluable conventional wisdom concerning this topic.

For instance, the very word “slave” stems from “Slav,” i.e. a reference to the experience of millions of (white) Slavish people who endured centuries of slavery at the hands of African Muslims. This, of course, is a most inconvenient truth, for it is a most Politically Incorrect truth. But it is the truth.

Yet the Slavish aren’t the only whites who spent centuries in captivity: Europeans of various backgrounds were enslaved by African Muslims as well. All of this is heavily documented in such neglected pieces of scholarship as Robert Davis’s Christian Slaves, Muslim Masters: White Slavery in the Mediterranean, the Barbary Coast, and Italy, 1500-1800 and Paul Baepler’s White Slaves, African Masters: An Anthology of American Barbary Captivity Narratives.

Nor is it just that millions of whites in Europe were made to toil in bondage for hundreds of years. Don Jordan’s White Cargo: The Forgotten History of Britain’s White Slaves in America and Michael Hoffman’s They Were White and They Were Slaves: The Untold History of the Enslavement of Whites in Early America impeccably establish that whites were enslaved in colonial America as well. Moreover, these brave authors show that the conditions that whites, including, most tragically, white children, had to endure both en route to the colonies as well as once they arrived were at least as dreadful as those experienced by Africans.

This last point would as well be included in an honest discussion of slavery. The word “kidnapping” that is so often, but erroneously, used to describe the circumstances that allegedly resulted in the transportation of Africans to the New World derives from the fact that British children—kids—were regularly “nabbed’ off of the streets of England and sold into slavery in America.

An honest discussion of race would mention what no less a figure than black Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates recently discovered: free blacks were in America before slavery. While researching the book and documentary The African-Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, Gates admits to having been shocked to discover that blacks freely came to America, to Florida, as early as 1513—over 100 years earlier than the standard date of 1619. And the one black man whose name is now known was a conquistador who came in search of the Fountain of Youth with Ponce de Leon.

Gates also notes that it is simply not true that blacks didn’t become aware of Christianity until they were enslaved by Europeans. Many Africans who were eventually sold to Europeans—at least one out of four—came from the Kingdom of Angola, where they had been converted to Roman Catholicism as early on as the 15th century.

Gates delivers a double whammy to the orthodox line on race and slavery in America when he reveals both that it was the “African elites” who “converted” the African masses to Christianity and that it was these same elites—not European abductors—who sold their fellow black Africans into slavery across the Atlantic.

Of the 12.5 million Africans sold during the era of the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, Gates further observes, only about 388,000 were shipped to America.

An honest discussion of race in America would include the fact that whites were slaves, for sure, but it would also have to accommodate the obscene truth that as many as 4,000 free black families owned slaves in the antebellum South. More stunning still is that, arguably, the first slave master in early America was a black man.

Anthony Johnson—a name, doubtless, of which few people today, black or white, would have heard—was an Angolan who was first sold by Africans to Arabs before winding up as an indentured servant in Virginia. There, he attained his freedom, became a planter, and acquired his own indentured servants. One of the latter, John Casor, a black man, served his mandatory seven years—but Johnson refused to set him free. Through a long, windy series of court battles, Johnson succeeded in prevailing upon the courts to declare Casor Johnson’s servant for life. Slavery was born, as this was the very first time in the colonies when it was legally determined that a person who had committed no crime had to spend the rest of his remaining existence in bondage.

We are a long ways off from having a truly honest discussion of race. Now we see why.

This week’s Glazov Gang was joined by Dr. Mark Durie, a theologian, human rights activist, pastor of an Anglican church, and an Associate Fellow at the Middle East Forum.

Dr. Durie discussed Islam vs. Human Conscience, analyzing how Islam wages war on humans moral judgment and intuition (starting at 5:30 mark). The discussion occurred within the context of Boko Haram’s kidnapping of 276 schoolgirls in Nigeria and the Islamic roots of that barbaric act. Dr. Durie shed light on the Islamic theology that inspires and sanctions Muslims to enslave and rape kafir women.

Our guest also focused on Islam-Denial in our culture, the subjects of abrogation and taqiyya, the forces that brought him into this battle, and much, much more.

Don’t miss it:

Don’t miss Frontpage’s second episode this week with Phyllis Chesler, an Emerita Professor of Psychology and Women’s Studies at City University of New York, best-selling author, legendary feminist leader, Fellow at the Middle East Forum and the author of 15 books. She is the author of her new memoir, An American Bride in Kabul.

Dr. Chesler joined the program to discuss her memoir and all of its ingredients, including being trapped in Afghanistan as a young bride, her terrifying experiences under Islamic Gender Apartheid, her views on the burqa and on how the feminist Left has betrayed Muslim women, her main message, and much, much more:

Behind the sudden concern for Boko Haram's Islamist atrocities.

The outrage over the kidnapping of nearly 300 schoolgirls by the Nigerian jihadist gang Boko Haram reeks of Western hypocrisy and moral idiocy. Boko Haram has for years been slaughtering Christians – up to 2500 this year alone – and burning churches in a classic Islamic jihad against infidels. These depredations apparently weren’t enough to get the group designated a terrorist organization by Hillary Clinton’s State Department. But this indifference to what under international law is a genocide has been indulged as well by our celebrities and the mainstream media, who rarely mention that the group is specifically targeting Christians, and before the girls were kidnapped displayed little interest in the suffering of those Christians. So why this sudden attention?

The recent burst of self-indulgent selfies tweeted by millions, including celebrities and the First Lady, and the sentimental news coverage all reflect the fashionable and selective obsessions of our political and cultural elite and those who ape their fashions. First there is the need to display what Alan Bloom called “conspicuous compassion” for distant misery and suffering. Especially fashionable are compassion and pity for people in the Third World, the display of what Pascal Bruckner called the “tears of the white man” shed for all those victims of Western crimes like colonialism, imperialism, and global capitalism. Like Veblen’s conspicuous consumption, photogenic public displays of compassion, “outrage,” and “concern” for global suffering function like a designer label, indicating one’s moral superiority and finely calibrated sensitivity to oppression and suffering. Of course, ignored in all this emotional bluster and self-indulgence is any understanding of why this atrocity is happening, or the motives and aims of the perpetrators, information that would be important if we were really serious about doing something about it other than morally preen for the cameras.

Next is the despicable selectivity about which victims deserve our outrage. Why haven’t the thousands of Nigerian Christians already slaughtered by Boko Haram been worthy of this same uproar as the kidnapped schoolgirls? Of course suffering children are always triggers of easy sentiment and emotion – “I want to reach out and save those kids,” Obama said at Steven Spielberg’s house, at the same time he pretty much implied he wasn’t about to actually do anything. But plenty of children have already been raped and killed by Boko Haram, and many more are dying in Syria, Sudan, Egypt, and numerous other venues. Maybe the fact that the Nigerian girls are destined to be slave-wives – as Robert Spencer points out, a practice legitimate under Islamic doctrine and law – fires up leftists, who are always ready to decry a “war on women” and privilege the travails of females over every other kind of oppression and suffering. People who think that a sorority girl who gets drunk at a party and has sex with an equally drunk fraternity brother has been the victim of “sexual assault” are not going to miss this opportunity to highlight the sexist “patriarchy” and the universal rottenness of men.

But notice that not a word will be said about the misogynistic Islamic doctrines that justify this atrocity, even though a video has been released that claims all the girls have converted to Islam, and shows them dressed in full shari’a regalia. Sentimental Third Worldism and its domestic offspring, multiculturalism, are hypersensitive to the feelings of any and every religious faith except Christianity, which has been tainted by alleged Western crimes and intolerance. That’s why the media and this administration have ignored the slow-motion genocide against Christians in the Middle East. People whose dudgeon reaches the stratosphere over some graffiti on a mosque or the word “crusade” have nothing to say, no outrage to publicize, no selfies to tweet, over the church-bombing, kidnapping and rape of girls and women, forced conversions, torture, and execution of Christians that have continually been taking place long before the Nigerian girls were kidnapped.

But that suffering doesn’t serve the left-wing multiculturalist narrative. After all, every orthodox multiculturalist knows that Christianity is the religion of Crusades and Inquisitions, violence and intolerance. It is Islam that is the religion of peace and ecumenical tolerance. Don’t think about the extensive documentation of theologized violence in Islamic doctrine and practice. Keep quiet about the genital mutilation, honor killings, sex segregation, and forced marriages inflicted on girls and women in Islamic countries. Don’t let an eloquent victim of such misogyny, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, be your commencement speaker, lest she speak truths hurtful to Muslims. Instead listen to the slick Muslim apologists and Western useful idiots who explain all that as the malign fantasies and slanderous distortions invented by “orientalist” shills for neo-colonial oppression and Zionist hegemony.

Most important, outrage is determined by the political needs of an administration whose foreign policy has been an unmitigated disaster. The sentimental orgy over the schoolgirls distracts us from the disorder and violence that Obama and his foreign policy team have left in the wake of their misguided, ignorant, and ideologically corrupted actions and policies abroad. From Ukraine to the South China Sea, Iran to Latin America, our enemies are invigorated, our rivals heartened, our allies dispirited, and our security and interests compromised.

All this failure is the consequence of Obama’s bad ideas about foreign policy: unilateral military action angers our allies and creates new enemies; diplomacy and apology will restore good will; negotiation with a committed enemy can make him change his mind and ignore his own interests; abstract idealism about democracy and human rights can substitute for grim calculations of zero-sum interests and tragic trade-offs; killing bin Laden and droning an endless parade of al Qaeda “number 2’s” will neutralize the organization; establishing a Palestinian nation will eliminate the Muslim grievance against the West that fuels jihadist terror. Worst of all, these debacles reflect the overweening narcissism of a foreign policy tyro ignorant of history and political philosophy, but supremely confident in the power of his personality and public relations, when in fact he has acted on the world stage like a pampered child in the company of hard men who despise him.

Finally, the spectacle of the kidnapped schoolgirls provides a convenient distraction from all those failures, especially one of the worst – the bungling and political opportunism that resulted in the murder of four Americans, including a diplomat, in Benghazi. This disaster began with Obama’s collusion in the removal of Libya’s Ghaddafi, who was behaving himself as far as our interests were concerned. Into the subsequent vacuum rushed any number of jihadist gangs, now armed with the weapons from Ghaddafi’s looted arsenals, and unrestrained by any government control. To hide this failure, our diplomatic mission was left short of military protection lest anyone wonder why this glorious triumph for human rights and democracy had left a failed state full of violent factions from whom our diplomats needed to be protected. And don’t forget the election-year narrative that al Qaeda was “on its heels” and “bin Laden is dead,” a fairy tale challenged by the well-coordinated, sophisticated military attack on September 11, 2012. Hence the spin about an obscure video, a despicable cover-up abetted by Hillary Clinton when she tried to sell it to the grieving parents standing next to their sons’ coffins.

No, better to put on an emotional show over the kidnapped school girls, a terrible event stripped of context and reduced to sentiment, a perfect occasion for displays of self-righteousness and sensitivity – especially when the House has inconveniently established a select committee to get to the truth about Benghazi and the administration’s cover-up. Just forget that none of the tweeting and “outrage” will do anything to get those girls back and punish the perpetrators. But they will distract us for a bit from one of the worst records of foreign policy failure in American history.

Frontpage editors have decided to shed light on the Islamic context of Shekau’s barbaric acts and words by reprinting a segment of an interview from our November 23, 2007 issue, in which Dr. Bill Warner discussed the inspiration and sanctioning that Muslims find in Islam for slavery and rape:

*

Frontpage Interview’s guest today is Bill Warner, the director of the Center for the Study of Political Islam (CSPI) and spokesman for politicalislam.com. CSPI’s goal is to teach the doctrine of political Islam through its books and it has produced an eleven book series on political Islam. Mr. Warner did not write the CSPI series, but he acts as the agent for a group of scholars who are the authors. The Center’s latest book is The Submission of Women and Slaves, Islamic Duality.

FP: Bill Warner, welcome back to Frontpage Magazine. This is the second part in our two-part series with you on the Center’s most recent book. In the first part we discussed Islam and its doctrine on the submission of women. In this second and final part we will discuss the matter of slavery.

Warner: It is a pleasure to work with Frontpage.

FP: So tell us in general where Islam stands on slavery.

Warner: Islam’s stand on slavery is based on its political principles of submission and duality. The principle of submission could not be clearer. By definition a slave is the most submissive of all people. You become a slave only when you have no more choices. A slave has completely submitted to a master.

The principle of duality is shown by the fact that Islam does not enslave Muslims, only kafirs (non-Muslims). Since only kafirs are enslaved, it assures that more of the world submits to Islam.

Islamic slavery is based on the Trilogy of the Koran, the Sira (Mohammed’s life) and the Hadith (the Traditions of Mohammed). All three texts say that slavery is permitted, ethical, desirable and a virtue. There is not one single negative word about slavery.

Slavery is seen as a process that brings kafirs to Islam. It is a virtue to free slaves, but Mohammed only freed slaves who submitted to Islam. If the kafir slave does not submit, then their children will. So given enough time, slaves convert to Islam. That is one of the reasons that Islam sees slavery as a positive.

Of course, there is another reason that Islam sees slavery as being so “good” and that is the money. Mohammed and the other jihadists made a fortune out of enslaving kafirs. Mohammed used the money for more jihad. So slavery financed the spread of Islam and jihad from the beginning.

FP: What were the ingredients of Mohammed’s own life in terms of slavery?

Warner: Mohammed is the perfect pattern for all humanity and his life was saturated in slavery. When his mother died, it was a freed slave who nursed him. His first wife owned slaves. One of his first converts was a slave. His closest friend, Abu Bakr, traded one of his black kafir slaves for a Muslim who was enslaved by a kafir.

But all of this was small change compared to his envolvement with slavery once he turned to jihad. In his first major battle at Badr, he stood by and prayed as his henchmen beat and tortured captured slaves to get information about the enemy kafirs.

Slaves made Mohammed’s pulpit. Slaves mended his cloths, cooked his food, and did every thing that a slave does for the master. He gave away slaves as gifts and received them as gifts. He went to war to kill the males so that the remaining people would surrender to be sold as slaves. Mohammed sold slaves on both the retail and wholesale markets.

He offered captured slaves their freedom if they would first agree that he was the prophet of Allah. A kafir slave then became a slave of Allah, because all Muslims are slaves of Allah. For a slave, the religion of Mohammed started and ended with slavery.

FP: Can you talk a bit about Islam and sexual slavery?

Warner: All morality in Islam is patterned after the example of Mohammed. Everything that he did and said defines what is permitted or “good”. Mohammed repeatedly sanctioned forced sex (rape) with kafir females after they were captured. The Hadith clearly reports that he got first choice of the women. In one case, he repeatedly demanded one particular woman for himself and swapped two other kafir slave women for his choice. So if Mohammed was involved in the rape of kafirs, then rape is a virtue, not a sin or error.

When Mohammed destroyed the B. Qurayza tribe, all of the adult male Jews were beheaded, so that no husbands were left. Mohammed then took the children and gave them to Muslims to raise as Muslims and he sold off the Jewish women as slaves.

We know from another story that the women were divided into sex slaves and domestic slaves. In one scene, a jihadist is trying to obtain a high ransom for a woman and he is told that her breasts are flat and her mouth is cold, so her value was less. In short, she was only good for work around the house, not in the bedroom.

The Hadith tells of another story where the Muslims used coitus interruptus to avoid impregnating the kafir sex slaves. The reason was purely for business. If the kafir sex slave was pregnant, then she was worth less money.

Islamic doctrine says that kafir women should not be used for prostitutes, only for the pleasure of the master.

When Mohammed attacked the Jews at Khaybar, many moral precedents were set. Sexual slavery received an entire set of rules. Muslims were not to rape pregnant or menstruating women until they had delivered the child or finished their periods. At Khaybar, Mohammed’s god Allah, announced that even married women were fair game for rape.

Mohammed only killed some of the Jews at Khaybar. The male and female survivors were needed to work the land as dhimmis. (The original dhimmis were semi-slaves with no civil rights. Today, dhimmis are ignorant kafirs who apologize for Islam.) Since Islam needed the men to work, husbands were left alive. That was the reason that the Koran said that in this case, even with the husbands looking on, it was good to rape the women.

Sexual slavery was not only fun and profitable for the Muslim men, but rape was a powerful tactic of war, then and today. The women are forced into submission to Muslim men and the husbands are humiliated. Humiliated men are weakened men, so more kafirs were less able to resist Islam.

For some time Mohammed’s favorite sex partner was a Christian slave from Egypt named Mary. One of Mohammed’s wives caught him in some state of intimacy with Mary in the wife’s bedroom and raised hell. Mohammed promised to not do it again and moved Mary to her own apartment in Medina.

Mohammed had received Mary and her sister as gifts. He gave her sister away to a Muslim poet. He was used to giving away sex slaves. He gave several of his top lieutenants kafir sex slaves. Umar, who later became caliph, gave his sex slave to his son. [As an aside, when he was caliph, his son got drunk and Umar beat him to death.]

FP: This institution of Islamic sexual slavery isn’t just a reality of the past is it?

Warner: Everything that has been said up to now is not only history; it is Sunna (the example of the perfect pattern of action and morality found in Mohammed). So today we don’t have a beautiful blonde Christian girl on the block in Mecca, but we have continuous and ongoing rapes by Muslims in kafir cities. This goes on everywhere that Islam goes because it is Sunna.

This is a continuous 1400-year history of jihad. In every detailed history that comes from the original documents from history, rape is a constant. You have to look in the original documents, since our historians refuse to report it in so-called history books.

Rape is Sunna. Rape is not a sin. Rape is permitted and encouraged by Mohammed and the Koran. Islam is the only political system in the world that includes rules for rape and war. Rape is jihad. How good can it get? A Muslim gets to rape a kafir girl and get heaven credits. All jihad is a ticket to Paradise.

The most disgusting aspect of the Islamic rape of kafirs is not the rapes, but the kafir response. Kafirs become dhimmis by ignoring the rapes. I challenge you to find one, even one, mention of Islamic rape in the history books.

Islamic rape is more taboo than the N-word in the media. At least the N-word is acknowledged to exist. Even unicorns exist in media fantasy. But Islamic rape is forbidden to even exist as a fantasy.

And to reach a fevered rant: our so-called “feminist” scholars are absolutely intellectually and morally bankrupt hypocrites. They are traitors to our culture and a shame and a disgrace. They remain silent in the face of heinous crimes against women. They are arch-dhimmis when they refuse to speak of the Sunna, history and current rapes of our daughters, mothers, and sisters.

And our tax dollars support their evil in our public universities.

The real enemy of minorities unveiled.

The Democratic Party, the party of slavery, which openly practices the only form of discrimination that is acceptable today in American politics – class warfare – and discrimination against the successful, yesterday, for the third time in recent weeks, wrongly accused the Republican Party of racism.

Yesterday’s folly saw New York Congressman Steve Israel assert that “to a significant extent, the Republican base does have elements that are animated by racism and that’s unfortunate.” This follows remarks by Attorney General Eric Holder, who claimed at a forum on civil rights that the past five years in Washington have been marked by “unprecedented, unwarranted, ugly and divisive adversity.” “If you don’t believe that … you look at the way the attorney general of the United States was treated yesterday by a House committee.”

The reality is that Holder was treated appropriately – as he is inept and this administration is constantly lying to the public. Americans indeed should know no color when inept people govern; they should be challenged and condemned. It is unfair to assert “racism” when caught lying and cheating as a way to defend yourself.

Earlier this week, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi blamed racism as to why congressional Republicans do not want to act on comprehensive immigration reform, claiming “I think race has something to do with the fact that they’re not bringing up an immigration bill.” As the Republican National Committee rightly noted, “Democrats are desperate to try to discredit conservatives because they don’t have the facts on their side.”

The Democrats’ claims are unfair, un-American, and most importantly, so untrue. It forces me, Ronn Torossian, to ask: Do the Democrats think minorities are stupid? Those practicing bias today are the Democrats who say if you are successful, it is permissible to discriminate.

When did the revisionist history commence about which party is racist? The Republican Party was born just prior to the Civil War for the sole purpose of combating slavery and it fought against the party of slavery. The Republican Party is the party of freedom and economic liberty and prosperity – as it was then and now. The Democrat platform of the 1860s was a pro-slavery policy that sought to keep people enslaved. In the 1950s and 1960s, the Democratic Party was the enforcer of “Jim Crow” laws and segregation. In 1964, there was a filibuster of the Civil Rights Act by Democrat Senator Robert Byrd (D-WV) which lasted 14 hours. The Act was crafted and supported by a vast number of Republicans in the Senate, while opposed by southern Democratic senators (including Al Gore Sr).

Today, the Democrats continue to keep people in place and pursue centralized government, as a further way for more government control, particularly over the poor. The Democratic Party seeks to tell people how to eat, raise their families, and in this administration, how to have healthcare.

The concepts of freedom and individualism, and pulling oneself up by one’s bootstraps, are Republican values which should be embraced. The Democrats’ continual race accusations offer an opportunity for Republicans – which include Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz– to jump on this discussion. The Democrats – who wrote and enforced the Jim Crow laws – have not and will not lead minorities (or the rest of this country) in the right direction.

While minorities – wrongly – overwhelmingly vote Democrat, why is it that jobs under this President for African-Americans continue to drop? Total numbers of employment-aged African-Americans in the workforce slid from 58.6 percent in June 2007, to 52.8 percent by August 2012. There is ample history and facts which can be shared to show the long history of the Democrats with racism.

After so many years of supporting liberals, conservatives must pursue a wide-ranging public relations campaign to remind all Americans to pursue smaller government and reduced spending as a way for all Americans to be more free, and have more opportunity. Yes, the Republican Party needs more diversity – and perhaps the Democrats’ continually raising of these issues is a way to create a campaign where dialogue with minorities can change the minds of many. The Democrats raise fear – rather than facts.

Now that there has been an African-American President, it’s time for all Americans to realize that liberty, freedom and opportunity come best with small government and economic freedom. The liberals’ continued false accusations of race offer an opportunity the GOP must jump upon to educate minorities on the true facts of which party is best for all Americans.

In the name of “altruism.”

Within the context of keeping the Syrian jihad alive, it seems there is no end to the attempts of some Islamic clerics to legitimize otherwise forbidden behavior in order to gratify the sexual urges of the jihadis and keep them fighting Syrian president Bashar Assad.

First, there was the now infamous “sex-jihad” fatwa, which holds that any Muslim woman who willingly allows her body to be used by the sexually-deprived jihadis becomes herself a jihadi, if not a “martyr,” deserving of all the honor and rewards associated with those titles. (Much has been written about the sex jihad, including videotaped testimonials—and how one teenage girl, after copulating with countless jihadis, got pregnant and contracted aids—even as pro-Syrian war Western entities like Foreign Policy try to deny it.)

Another fatwa permitted the jihadis in Syria to enslave and rape any non-Sunni women—including Alawites (Assad’s sect), Christians, Druze, and all Shia—in the context of their status as melk al-yamin or “right hand possessions,” per Koran 4:3 (a verse that permits the enslavement and sexual use of conquered “infidel” women).

Now, the same Islamic cleric who issued this last “rape fatwa” has issued another fatwa urging destitute women in war torn Syria to become the “right hand possessions” of any man willing to support them—basically, to sell themselves into sex-slavery.

In a video that appeared in December 2013, Jordanian Sheikh Yassin al-Ajlawni, who says he lived in Syria for 17 years, asserted that “the needy, disenfranchised Syrian woman is permitted to ask the Muslim man who is capable of supporting her, to enter into a “right hand possession” contract with him, whereby she becomes his right hand possession.”

Ajlawni’s logic is that, because Syria is in a state of war, and the numbers of men are dropping, needy and displaced women are permitted to seek out support by selling themselves into concubinage.

In the Muslim sheikh’s own words:

We hereby give fatwa permitting the Syrian woman who desires to be married to a Muslim man, via a “right hand possession” contract—whereby he becomes her master and she becomes his slave—that all this contract needs is for the woman be clean of her menstruation period, and that this contract be registered with the sheikhs or other authorities, either in a Sharia or civil court… Afterwards, once the woman says, “I give you possession over myself,” via contract of “right hand possession,” this woman becomes his loyal servant, and he her lord; she becomes a slave and concubine to him, and he must support her according to a previously agreed upon monetary fee … thus they become governed by the rulings of “right hand possession,” and there is no problem with this, Allah willing.

To bolster his fatwa, al-Ajlawni referred to a few hadiths (recorded words and teachings of Islam’s prophet Muhammad), including: “One of the signs of the [final] hour is that knowledge will decrease, ignorance will increase, adultery will appear, women will grow in numbers, while men will grow less, so that fifty women will be worth one [man].”

Al-Ajlawni also cited a hadith from the canonical Sahih Bukhari, which has the prophet saying: “whenever fitna [sedition from Islam] becomes widespread, Allah distinguishes his followers, so that 50 women follow one man, saying, ‘Oh Abdullah [“slave of Allah”], take care of me,’” adding that in the same narrative the woman says, “O Abdullah, have sex with me.”

In closing, the sheikh said: “We call on the ulema of Syria to adopt this [fatwa], for it is the only legitimate way to guarantee that displaced Syrian women who have no one to rely on but Allah are not physically or sexually exploited or beaten in ways that contradict Sharia. All prayers and blessings upon our prophet.”

While one may rationalize such fatwas away in the context of the chaotic situation in Syria, the fact is, the same fatwa, the same logic, was earlier issued in Egypt, soon after Muhammad Morsi became president in 2012. Then, Egypt’s first “sex slave” marriage took place, when a woman declared before her future master-spouse,” “I enslave myself to you,” before they kissed to an applauding crowd.

The justification for “right hand possession” marriages in Egypt was not displaced and destitute women, but rather young, sexually-frustrated men not able to afford wives, and women who wish to dress promiscuously—since the rules governing female “right hand possessions” forbid them from wearing the hijab (as sex-slaves, they are required to be partially naked, differentiating them from Muslim women, as explained by this Kuwaiti woman).

A country whose black population is deprived of civil rights. Where are the boycotts?

There is a country in the Middle East where 10 percent of the population is denied equal rights because of their race, where black men are not allowed to hold many government positions, where black women are put on trial for witchcraft and where the custody of children is granted to the parent with the most “racially superior” bloodline.

This Apartheid State is so enormously powerful that it controls American foreign policy in the Middle East even as its princes and princesses bring their slaves to the United Kingdom and the United States.

That country is Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia abolished slavery in 1962 under pressure from President Kennedy, who accomplished what the Ottoman Empire and the League of Nations had not been able to, but that hasn’t stopped its citizens from selling castrated slaves on Facebook or its princes from beating their black slaves to death in posh London hotels.

The Saudis had clung to their racist privileges longer than anyone else. When rumors reached Mecca that the Ottoman Empire might be considering the abolition of African slavery and equal rights for all, the chief of the Ulema of Mecca issued a fatwa declaring “the ban on slaves is contrary to Sharia (Islamic Law)… with such proposals the Turks have become infidels and it is lawful to make their children slaves.”

But Saudi Arabia’s oil wealth eventually made slavery economically unnecessary. Early on, African slaves worked for foreign oil companies which paid their masters, but they were a poor fit for the oil economy. The Kingdom no longer needed agricultural slaves and pearl drivers; it needed trained technicians from the West and international travel made it cheaper to import Asian workers for household labor and construction than to maintain its old trade in slaves.

The Saudis replaced the 450,000 slaves of the 1950s with 8.4 million guest workers. These workers are often treated like slaves, but they are not property and are therefore even more disposable than the slaves were. Exact numbers are hard to come by, but Nepal alone reported 265 worker deaths in Saudi Arabia in a single year.

Human Rights Watch has described conditions for foreign workers in Saudi Arabia as resembling slavery.

Meanwhile the three million Afro-Saudis are denied equal rights, prevented from serving as judges, security officials, diplomats, mayors and many other official positions. Afro-Saudi women are not allowed to appear on camera.

“There is not one single black school principal in Saudi Arabia,” the Institute for Gulf Affairs, a Saudi human rights group, reported.

Kafa’ah, equality in marriage, is used to establish that both sides are free from the “taint” of slave blood. The blood of Takruni, West African slaves, or Mawalid, slaves who gained their freedom by converting to Islam, is kept out of the Saudi master race through genealogical records that can be presented at need.

Challenges to the Kafa’ah of a marriage occur when tribal members uncover African descent in the husband or the wife after the marriage has already occurred. The racially inferior party is ordered to present “proof of equality” in the form of family trees and witnesses. If the couple is judged unequal, the Saudi Gazette reported, “Children’s custody is usually given to the ‘racially superior’ parent.”

These Saudi efforts at preventing their former slaves from intermarrying with them have only accelerated their incestuous inbreeding. In parts of Saudi Arabia, the percentage of marriages among blood relatives can go as high as 70%.

Saudi Arabia has the second highest rate of birth defects in the world, but a Saudi Sheikh blamed this phenomenon on female drivers, even though women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.

Equality has always been a foreign concept to the Saudis whose tribal castes determine the right to rule. In Saudi Arabia everyone has their place, from the Afro-Saudi, to the non-Muslim guest worker to the Saudi woman.

On the road to Mecca, a sign points one way for “Muslims” and another for “Non-Muslims.” Only Muslims are allowed into the holy cities of Islam. A Christian truck driver from Sri Lanka who wandered into Mecca was arrested and dispatched for trial to a Sharia court of Islamic law.

Likewise, women are barred from many jobs, kept from driving and even electronically tracked to prevent them from leaving the country. Guest workers in Saudi Arabia are treated as slaves, their identity papers held by their employers, preventing them from leaving without permission.

The guest workers however, if they survive the witchcraft accusations and sexual assaults, will escape back to Ethiopia, Sri Lanka or the Philippines with a fraction of the money that they were supposed to earn. The Afro-Saudis however have nowhere to return to. Saudi Arabia is the only home they know.

The Arab slave trade was longer, crueler and far more enduring than anything Europeans and Americans are familiar with and left behind large numbers of Afro-Arabs across the Middle East and Afro-Turks in Turkey. While African-Americans are prominently represented in American life, Afro-Arabs and Afro-Turks suffer from an inferior status which keeps them away from political power and out of public view.

American soldiers in Basra were surprised to discover large numbers of Afro-Iraqis. The hundreds of thousands of Afro-Iraqis are a legacy of the Zanj slave rebellion when 500,000 African slaves rose against their Arab masters. The Afro-Iraqis are free, but relentlessly discriminated against. In Gaza, 10,000 Afro-Arabs face daily discrimination. But it is the Afro-Saudis who are the Middle East’s best kept secret.

Nawal Al-Hawsawi was dubbed the Rosa Parks of Saudi Arabia when she took three women to court who insultingly called her “Abd” or slave. Nawal dropped the court case after she received an apology, but the taunt of “slave” is one that Afro-Saudis have to live with daily in Saudi Arabia.

“The monarchy’s religious tradition still views blacks as slaves,” Ali Al-Ahmed, the Director of the Institute for Gulf Affairs, wrote in Foreign Policy Magazine.

The Institute blames Deputy Saudi Foreign Minister Abdul Aziz Bin Abdullah, the son of the Saudi king, for being the architect of the Saudi apartheid state, but Saudi apartheid predates any one man.

Saudi slavery was intertwined with Islam, receiving sanction from the Koran and the Hadiths while relying on the Saudi role as the guardians of Mecca and Medina to lure African Muslims into slavery. African Muslims who made the pilgrimage to Mecca were defrauded and forced to sell their children into slavery to afford the return trip home. Slave traders lured African Muslims from Sudan, Mali and Burkina Faso by promising to take them to the holy places of Islam and teach them to read the Koran in Arabic.

Sheikh Saleh Al-Fawzan, a leading authority on Islam in Saudi Arabia, bluntly stated, “Slavery is a part of Islam. Slavery is part of jihad, and jihad will remain as long there is Islam.” The linkage between slavery, Jihad and Islam dates back to Mohammed whose followers were compensated with human property.

In The Legacy of Arab-Islam in Africa, John Alembillah Azumah writes that, “In pre-Islamic Arabia blacks were held in high esteem and did marry Arab women … the discrimination on account of the colour of their skin is a development within the Islamic period.”

Racism was a necessary prerequisite to the expansion of Islam through Jihad. The land that is today known as Saudi Arabia was at the center of those conquests, growing rich in slaves and loot. Today it is once again at the center of the new Jihad, its every atrocity justified by its role in the holy wars of Islam.

Hall's Egyptian parents sold her into slavery when she was 8 for $30 a month

The great perversity of the left’s obsession with promoting Third World migration to Western nations is how that migration undoes all the achievements of civilization.

240 years after Britain outlawed slavery, it’s forced to deploy Anti-Slavery units at airports.

Specialist anti-slavery teams are being deployed at Heathrow and other major UK airports to combat people-trafficking gangs.

The Border Force-led teams will work at identifying potential victims of trafficking, disrupting crime gangs and collecting intelligence on trafficked adults and children.

The squads will take on the work of the Met’s specialist Operation Paladin team which investigated the trafficking of children through Heathrow airport.

Meanwhile in the United States, Shyima Hall, an Egyptian girl who was sold into slavery at the age of 8, and lived as a slave in the United States until she was freed by law enforcement, has a book out, Hidden Girl.

A decade ago, Shyima Hall was smuggled into the United States as a 10-year-old slave, forced to cook and clean inside the home of a wealthy Irvine family and, at night, sleep on a squalid mattress in a windowless garage.

Hall’s Egyptian parents sold her into slavery when she was 8 for $30 a month, according to authorities. The Cairo couple who bought her moved to Irvine two years later, smuggling Hall into the U.S. where she toiled for them and their five children until she was 13.

Hall said she worked 16 hour days, scrubbing floors, cooking meals and cleaning house, and was rarely allowed outside the spacious home. She was forced to wash her own clothes in a bucket and was forbidden from going to school. She never visited a doctor or dentist and didn’t speak a word of English.

Her captors, Abdel Nasser Eid Youssef Ibrahim and his former wife, Amal Ahmed Ewis-abd Motelib, berated her and occasionally slapped her around, authorities said.

Stories like these remind us that it’s not all in the past. It’s happening right now. While the left denounces the West for the slave trade of a century ago, it celebrates an Islamic ideology which was built on enslaving men and women and which continues the traffic in slaves even today.

Looking back to Egypt, slavery there was only shut down by Western colonialism.

For a while the British agents of the Slave Trade Bureau roamed Egypt hunting for Egyptian slavers transporting African slaves from the Sudan. One such famous case in 1894 involved Ali Pasha Sharif, the head of Egypt’s Legislative Assembly, who was charged with purchasing a smuggled Sudanese slavewoman. A few weeks earlier Ali Pasha Sharif had called for shutting down the Slave Trade Bureau on the grounds that slavery no longer existed in Egypt.

Despite such British attempts at cracking down on the slave trade, it never went away.

Count Della Sella, the former head of the Slave Trade Bureau, said that all the laws against slavery proved useless. “Now there is a constant current of thousands of these petty dealers, each of whom brings three or four women slaves with him under the name of wives and servants. They sell their slaves in Egypt and as the price has now risen, three or four, are quite enough to allow of a profitable journey. The large caravans of former days are mostly stopped, but a constant stream of small lots of slaves sets into Egypt from the Sudan.”

There’s nothing new here. The Slave Trade Bureau is reborn again, but the slaves are now being smuggled by their Muslim masters into the UK itself. And the United States.

If "Right to Work" is slavery then so is any form of compulsory unionization.

I’m not sure which genius lawyer came up with that one, but it’s an argument that really cuts the other way.

A Michigan union invoked the provision of the state constitution that bans slavery in their argument against right-to-work, court documents show.

Teamsters Local No. 214 stated Dec. 6 that right-to-work was “a violation of the prohibitions against involuntary servitude” because members of the union had to work against their will on behalf of non-union members. The union then referred to Article I, Section 9 of the state constitution, which states: “Neither slavery, nor involuntary servitude unless for the punishment of crime, shall ever be tolerated in this state.”

The claim was made in response to a lawsuit filed by four city of Dearborn employees who were going to be charged $150 by the union for any grievance they filed after they left the union when they exercised their rights under state law.

If “compelling” union employees, who have a bargaining monopoly, to work on behalf of non-union members is slavery… then compelling non-union members to work and pay dues to union employees must likewise be slavery.

If “Right to Work” is slavery then so are all union monopolies and any form of compulsory unionization. The two arguments effectively cancel each other out.

Donate Now to Save Christian Lives.

This is a message from our contact in Pakistan (for our organization Rescue Christians) on a Christian girl named Tania Rebecca, who was raped and abused by Muslims in an attempt to force her to convert to Islam:

On 28th April 2012, Tania Rebecca, resident of the village of Daultabad, Tehsil Manawala, District of Shiekhpura, was kidnapped and forcibly converted to Islam. The aggrieved family luckily traced the kidnappers through a cell phone number.

According to Tania:

On the day of the incident, I left home at around 9:00 A.M for Nankana City to my maternal uncle’s home. I was stopped by Rehana who offered to sit in the car and they would drop me to my uncle’s home. I accepted the offer and sat in the car as Rehana is well known to me. When I sat in the car, I observed that there were three men in the car: Muhammad Ashraf (the husband of Rehana), Rehana’s son, and an unknown driver. When I tried to resist they warned me and threatened me that if I would make a noise they would kill me. Then Rehana informed me that they were taking me to Multan for the delivery of their relative. Afterwards they put toxic powder in my eyes and put a black scarf on my eyes and started beating me.

I realized that they had kidnapped me. They informed my family that they are taking me to Multan for a delivery. Rehana and Ashraf took me to Dera Ghazi Khan and handed me over to Muhammad Zafar. I was completely out of my mind and unable to understand what was happening. Rehana and Ashraf left the place, then Muhammad Zafar sexually harassed me. Even his family members were forcing me to convert to Islam. I totally refused to embrace Islam. Later on I was sent to Muhammad Ismael, aged 50 – and Khadim Hussain, aged 45, the resident of Nawan Janoobi Dera Ghazi Khan. I was completely unaware of my sale and purchase. Both of them raped me again and again.

During this time the family of Tania was doing their best to track their daughter. They were lucky to track Muhammad Zafar through his cell phone SIM.

But when Robert (Brother of Tania) and Shafaqat Masih went to Dera Ghazi Khan to find Tania, Muhammad Zafar refused to tell anything about her. With the intervention of the ex-mayor of Dera Ghazi Khan, Muhammad Khan Khachela, they were able to get the exact location of Tania. Muhammad Zafar Informed the police and Muhammad Khan Khachela that they had paid 85,000 rupees (PKR) for Tania. Muhammad Zafar said that “if they are able to pay us 95,000 PKR we are ready to set Tania free.” Muhammad Zafar also said that presently she is in the custody of Khadim Hussain and Ismael.

Tania’s mother immediately put their house on lease for 200,000 PKR. On June 1, 2012, Robert (Brother of Tania) and Shafaqat Masih went to Dera Ghazi Khan, where they came to know that Khadim Hussian and Ismael had sold Tania to Atta Muhammad and Rub Nawaz. After knowing this, ex-mayor Muhammad Khan Khachela called Atta Muhammad and Rub Nawaz to bring the girl. Firstly, they did not agree to return the girl but later on they agreed to return her. After the long struggle, Tania was recovered by the family after paying the amount of 95,000 PKR .

A prejudiced action was shown by the police that there was an FIR (First Information Registered) against the culprits but police did not arrest them. And still Tania and her family are receiving threats from these culprits as well as from the police. Unknown people visited the house of Tania’s parents twice to get Tania back.

When she was recovered, one Pakistani NGO started claiming in the international community that they are helping this persecuted girl, whereas her experience with the NGO was bitter, which we will unveil in our interview with her soon to come.

During a counseling class with Tania, we discovered that she had been severely ill-treated physically and mentally by her captors, suffering barbaric torture that involved rape and sexual abuse. We immediately arranged her surgery and she is recovering. It is shameful for a Human Rights and Christian Rights Organization to have only used her to get funds and benefits. We would request that the international community look into such matters closely and to support the victims directly, rather than giving money for such people and organizations who use contributions for their own profit.

The movement to destroy human civilization as we know it.

Early in the morning, while most are still sleeping, groups of elderly Chinese women spread out across city streets. They tear open trash bags, pick through the litter and sort out bottles and cans that come with a deposit. And then they bring them to the local supermarket to a machine that scans and evaluates each can, accepting and rejecting them one by one, and finally printing out a receipt.

The interaction between the elderly immigrant who speaks broken English or the homeless man who is barely holding it together… and the machine is a stark contrast between what the new smart clean green economy pretends to be and what it actually is.

The machine, like so much else that we design, is impressive, but its existence depends on someone digging through the trash with their hands for much less than minimum wage to extract a generally useless item.

The entire bottle economy, which has more than a passing resemblance to the trash sorting operations in the Third World carried out by despised and persecuted minorities, like the Zabbaleen in Egypt, is artificial. The United States is not so poor that it actually needs to recycle. It recycles not under the impulse of economic imperatives, but of government mandates.

The elderly Chinese women dig through the trash because politicians decided to impose a tax on us and an incentive for them in the form of a deposit. All those useless 1980s laws created a strange underground economy of marginalized people digging through the trash.

Every time politicians celebrate a recycling target met and show off some shiny new machine, hiding behind the curtain are the dirty weary people dragging through the streets at the crack of dawn, donning rubber gloves and tearing apart trash bags. They are the unglamorous low-tech reality of environmentalism.

These are the Green Jobs that aren’t much talked about. They pay below minimum wage and have no workplace safety regulations. They are the Third World reality behind the First World ecology tripe. It’s not that the people who plan and run the system don’t know about them. But they don’t like to talk about them because they come too close to revealing the unsavory truth about where environmentalism is really going.

Environmentalism, like every liberal notion, is sold to the masses as modern and progressive. It’s the exact opposite. It’s every bit as modern and progressive as those sacks of cans being hauled by hand through the streets to the machine.

Prince Charles, that avid idiot and environmentalist, visited a Mumbai slum a few years ago and said that it had some lessons to teach the West.

“When you enter what looks from the outside like an immense mound of plastic and rubbish, you immediately come upon an intricate network of streets with miniature shops, houses and workshops, each one made out of any material that comes to hand,” Prince Charles wrote in his book, Harmony.

The Prince of Wales is quite the author. In addition to Harmony: A New Way of Looking at Our World, he has written Shelter: Human Habitats from Around the World, The Prince’s Speech: On the Future of Food and The Illustrated Guide to Chickens: How to Choose Them, How to Keep Them.

One might be forgiven for assuming that the royal brain twitching behind those watery eyes is preparing for some sort of apocalypse. And it is. The apocalypse is environmentalism. Or from the point of view of the environmentalists, who spare some time from their public appearances and their mansions to pen tomes on the future of food and how to choose chickens, the apocalypse is prosperity.

People of that sort think that instead of getting the slum dwellers of Mumbai into apartments, we ought to be figuring out how to build shelters out of random garbage. Think of it as the recycling can solution as applied to your entire life.

That is the sort of lifestyle that environmentalists think of as sustainable. Or as Hobbes put it, “In such condition, there is no place for Industry; because the fruit thereof is uncertain; and consequently no Culture of the Earth.” That is the natural state to which environmentalists would return us to.

More recently another deep thinker, Peter Buffett, Warren Buffett’s son, took to the editorial pages of the New York Times to denounce Third World philanthropy.

“Microlending and financial literacy — what is this really about?” Buffett asks. “People will certainly learn how to integrate into our system of debt and repayment with interest. People will rise above making $2 a day to enter our world of goods and services so they can buy more. But doesn’t all this just feed the beast?”

To the slum dwellers, the beast isn’t capitalism, it’s that gnawing feeling in your stomach when you haven’t eaten for a day. But Peter Buffett, who lives a life almost as privileged as Prince Charles, bemoans the idea of getting people to the point where they aren’t worried about where their next meal is coming from because it just turns them into capitalists and consumers. And before you know it, they’re buying big screen televisions and writing op-eds in the New York Times on the futility of philanthropy.

Instead of helping the Third World live like us, the perverse children of the rich dream of making us live like the Third World.

The elderly Chinese woman picking through the trash in search of empty beer bottles isn’t the past. She’s the future.

Recycling is big business because the government and its affiliated liberal elites decided it should be. It’s just one example of an artificial economy and it’s small stuff compared to the coming carbon crackdown in which every human activity will be monetized and taxed somewhere down the road according to its carbon footprint.

The ultimate dream of the sort of people who can’t sleep at night because they worry that children in India might be able to grow up making more than two dollars a day, is to take away our prosperity for our own good through the total regulation of every area of our lives under the pretext of an imminent environmental crisis.

The Global Warming hysteria is about absolute power over every man, woman and child on earth.

Environmentalism is wealth redistribution on a global scale. The goal isn’t even to lift all boats, but to stop the tide of materialism from making too many people too comfortable.

The liberal billionaire who clamors about sustainability likes progress. What he dislikes is the middle class with its mass produced cars and homes, cheap restaurants full of fatty foods and television sets and daily deliveries of cardboard boxes full of stuff and shopping malls. He thinks, in all sincerity, that they would be happier and more spiritually fulfilled as peasants.

Beneath all the empty chatter about social riches and sustainability is that need to impose progressive misery. Beneath the glossy surface of environmentalism is a vision of the American middle class learning to dig through bags of garbage, the detritus of their consumerism for which they must be punished, to become better people.

Rich Lowry's new book illuminates what a great president of the past has to offer the present.

American history can be defined by two pivotal presidents; George Washington, who ushered in the birth of the nation, and Abraham Lincoln, who oversaw its rebirth. It is even possible to see the history of the nation embodied in these two Americas; Washington’s former colonies struggling to assert themselves on a continent and settle the debate over their existence, and Lincoln’s expanding empire of technology and progress leading with idealism on the world stage.

That is Rich Lowry’s thesis in his book Lincoln Unbound: How an Ambitious Young Railsplitter Saved the American Dream–and How We Can Do It Again. Lincoln Unbound is less of a Lincoln biography — there are plenty of those out there already — than an inspirational book based on the life of Lincoln. Unlike the usual sort of inspirational presidential books, Lowry’s range isn’t the individual, but the nation.

After two disastrous elections, as conservatives struggle with self-definition, Lowry reaches back to a national crisis of self-definition that was fought out in a bloody civil war. Lincoln Unbound attempts to reclaim Lincoln from liberal revisionists and the iconic overfamiliarity that any great leader suffers from in order to reinvent him as the father of the modern age and the guiding light of genuine conservatism.

If Washington is often associated with determination, a refusal to give up or to allow any of the men under him to give up, Lowry associates Lincoln with aspiration. Lowry would like us to see not only the familiar Lincoln of the battlefield, but the conductor of the great industrial works that came afterward. Lincoln Unbound’s Lincoln is not only a man of his time, but of our time as well, extending through history from Gettysburg to Silicon Valley.

But more so, Lowry’s Lincoln represents a perfect balance, a golden mean in a tumultuous time, finding the right path between aspiration and labor, between freedom and progress and between individuality and order. Looking back to Lincoln, Lowry argues is vital. His American Dream is the American Dream that we ought to have. An American Dream that finds the balance between the extremes, building a new age out of the virtues of character and the opportunities of freedom.

The theme of Lincoln Unbound is that the answers to the modern social and economic conflicts can be found in the struggles of Lincoln’s day and in the virtues that allowed him to overcome them. Lincoln’s character as a believer in opportunity and industry, as an aspirational man of the book not the axe, who could nevertheless still wield the ax, promises to reinvigorate the modern American Dream by meshing opportunity with hard work.

Vital to the current conflict between the Democrats and the Republicans, both of whom have made a habit of claiming Lincoln for their own, Lowry emphasizes Lincoln’s Whig beliefs over the politics of the Jacksonian Democrat that he might have been expected to put on. Rather than romanticizing a class or engaging in class warfare, Lincoln understood that poverty was misery and that teaching men to rise out of it was more useful than waging an endless political and economic war on their behalf.

Lincoln did not believe that enduring opportunity could come about without the personal virtue of an industrious character. Lincoln had labored hard with both books and axes, and the setbacks documented in Lincoln Unbound make for a startling contrast with another Illinois politician whose political career was handed to him on a silver platter.

A believer in progress, Lincoln did not fear change. As a man who began by transforming himself and ended by transforming a nation, Lincoln was an eager acolyte of change, of industry and road building, of connecting people and linking together a scattered nation in a single web. But he believed that these could only come about from the virtues of labor rather than government mandated idleness.

A Free Labor man, Lincoln saw the freedom of opportunity coming about through hard work. The individual freedom of the farmer made his work meaningful and the work made the freedom that he possessed meaningful.

It is where Lincoln would have clearly and cleanly broken with the food stamp politics of the Illinois of the present, with the overburdened public school systems run by teachers who don’t want to teach and a new generation of students who no longer see any point in learning, possessed by the social justice idea that opportunity can only come through redistribution rather than hard work.

The connection between freedom and labor used to be the underlying factor of the American Dream. Now there is neither freedom nor labor, but there is always the lure of the “free.” Lincoln embodied, in both his life and his ideas, the firm notion that aspirational upward mobility was the manifest destiny of both individuals and nations, but that such mobility could only come through good character and the virtues of industry in both individuals and nations.

Growing up poor, Lincoln would have understood the unemployed American better than Obama ever could and he would have wondered at a nation whose great industrial systems and mighty government had stagnated into a convoluted maze of dams and canals, trapping and confining economic activity and opportunity, rather than opening the way for it and liberating the flow of its turbulent waters.

Lincoln had envisioned government as a liberating force, capable of unleashing the initiative of the ennobled individual. Today he would find a lack of both, with nobility and initiative held captive in the regulatory chains of an overzealous state.

In Lincoln Unbound, National Review editor Rich Lowry argues that there is much in our modern society that Lincoln would be impressed by and approve of. But there is also much that would sadden and shock him. The new America that Lincoln helped unleash is not all one thing. Its aptitudes remain impressive, but its horizons have diminished. It is still a place of great dreams, but a look back at Lincoln can remind us how many of the truly great dreams of the past have become lost in the chains of the present.

Lincoln Unbound suggests that by rediscovering Lincoln as a visionary of opportunity and labor, rather than the iconic wartime leader, the dreams of the past can inform the possibilities of the present.
