Spelling out the absurd implications of an absurd theory.

The idea of “white privilege” has made the news recently. The truth, though, is that it has been a fetish of leftist academics for quite some time.

“White privilege,” as one sage puts it, “is a form of racism” that’s “predicated on preserving the privileges”—by which he means the “social and economic benefits”—of whites. Because “white privilege” is maintained via “hegemonic structures, practices, and ideologies,” individual whites “do not necessarily intend to hurt people of color,” even though “they inevitably do.”

So, white privilege is all about “preserving the privileges of white people” by way of those white privilege-producing things that “reproduce whites’ privileged status.”

That the definition of “white privilege” is rigged from the outset to paint all whites as victimizers and all non-whites (particularly blacks) as victims can be seen by its viciously circular reasoning. But it is also, necessarily, highly abstract. Once we make concrete its implications, however, its ridiculousness is exposed.

Statistically, blacks, say, have far higher rates of criminality than do whites. This, it is held, is a legacy of “racism” or “white privilege.” Of course, raw numbers in and of themselves go zero distance in establishing anything. Inter-racial statistical disparities no more signify injustice than does the fact that there are statistical disparities between the rates at which men and women are struck by lightning indicate injustice.

Back in 2000, Reginald and Jonathan Carr, two black brothers, beat, tortured, sexually humiliated, and robbed five white victims: Jason Befort, Brad Heyka, Aaron Sander, Heather Muller, and a woman known only as H.G. The Carrs repeatedly raped the women before shooting all five of their prey in the backs of their heads and driving over their bodies in a stolen pick-up truck. H.G. was the lone survivor.

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, then the Carrs are the real victims and those whose lives they destroyed are the victimizers, for in the absence of “white privilege,” the Carrs would have been decent, law-abiding citizens.

In 2007, in Nashville, Tennessee, a young white couple, Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom, were out on a date. They were carjacked, abducted, raped, and murdered by five blacks. Newsom was sodomized and shot. His body was wrapped and set on fire. Christian was raped anally, orally, and vaginally. She was forced to ingest bleach to remove traces of her assailants’ DNA and stuffed alive in garbage bags. Over the span of hours, she gradually suffocated to death.

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, these black criminals are the real victims and those whites whose lives they destroyed were actually the victimizers, for in the absence of “white privilege,” these black rapist murderers would have been decent, law-abiding citizens.

Last summer, Delby “Shorty” Benton, an 89-year-old white World War II veteran, was jumped and beaten to death by two black teenagers in Seattle.

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, then Benton’s murderers are the real victims and this WWII hero was the victimizer, for in the absence of “white privilege,” these thugs would’ve been decent, law-abiding citizens.

On Christmas Eve 2010, in Houston, a 12-year-old white boy, Jonathan Foster, was kidnapped, bound, and killed by way of a blowtorch courtesy of a 44-year-old black woman, Mona Nelson. His remains were discarded in a ditch along the side of a road.

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, then Nelson was the real victim and young Foster was the victimizer, for in the absence of “white privilege,” Nelson would’ve been a decent, law-abiding citizen.

Last year, a 99-year-old white woman, Fannie Gumbinger, was greeted by a 20-year-old black male intruder in her Poughkeepsie, New York home. Gumbinger was subsequently murdered. Police say she died of “multiple injuries.”

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, then the black man who beat Gumbinger to death was the real victim and Gumbinger was the victimizer, for in the absence of “white privilege,” this robber and murderer would’ve been a decent, law-abiding citizen.

In my hometown of Trenton, New Jersey, back in 1992, black career criminal Ambrose Harris carjacked Kristin Huggins, a young white female. Harris carjacked Huggins, and while she pleaded with him not to deprive her of her virginity, he sodomized her. While begging for her life, Harris put a bullet in the back of Huggins’ head and left her body in a shallow grave.

If the theory of “white privilege” is true, then Harris is the real victim and Huggins is the victimizer, for in the absence of “white privilege,” Harris would’ve been a decent, law-abiding citizen.

The 18th century philosopher David Hume remarked that many an absurd theory has taken refuge behind high levels of abstraction.

To this list we can add the theory of “white privilege,” surely one of the most absurd positions of them all.

The obscene ideology being promoted by thousands of public school teachers.

What would you think if your 8-year-old came home and told you that “white privilege is something that white people have, meaning they have an advantage in a lot of things and they can get a job more easily”? You would have heard that at the recent 15th annual White Privilege Conference in Madison, Wisconsin, attended by 2,500 public-school teachers, administrators and students from across the nation (http://tinyurl.com/lkoqj9b).

The average parent has no idea of the devious indoctrination going on in classrooms in many public schools. What follows are some of the lessons of the conference.

In one of the workshops, “Examining White Privilege and Building Foundations for Social Justice Thinking in the Elementary Classroom,” educators Rosemary Colt and Diana Reeves told how teachers can “insert social justice, anti-racist information” into their lessons that “even little kids” can understand.

Kim Radersma, a former high-school English teacher, hosted a session titled “Stories from the front lines of education: Confessions of a white, high school English teacher.” She said that teaching is a purely political act and that neutral people should “get the f—- out of education.” (http://tinyurl.com/q5adt2d). She also explained: “Being a white person who does anti-racist work is like being an alcoholic. I will never be recovered by my alcoholism, to use the metaphor. I have to every day wake up and acknowledge that I am so deeply embedded with racist thoughts and notions and actions in my body that I have to choose every day to do anti-racist work and think in an anti-racist way” (http://tinyurl.com/q4z969q).

But the propaganda and lunacy go even deeper. Jacqueline Battalora, professor of sociology and criminal justice at Saint Xavier University, informed conference participants that “white people did not exist before 1681. Again, white people did not exist on planet earth until 1681″ (http://tinyurl.com/lkoqj9b). That’s truly incredible. If Professor Battalora is correct, how are we to identify William Shakespeare (1564), Sir Isaac Newton (1642), John Locke (1632), Leonardo da Vinci (1452) and especially dear Plato (428 B.C.)? Were these men people of color, or did they not exist?

John A. Powell, a University of California, Berkeley law professor, told his audience, “And right now, I’m going to suggest to you that race is driving almost everything that’s happening in the country.” He explained the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans by saying, “They took money away from protecting the levees because the levees were protecting black people.”

Stephanie Baran’s message to conference participants was that capitalism is the cause of racism in the world today. This adjunct professor at Kankakee Community College, who calls herself a vulgar Marxist, added that racism was invented in Colonial America by white capitalists as a tool to divide labor and keep the working class in their place.

Educator Paul Kivel explained what he sees as Christian hegemony, saying, “Very simply, I define it as the everyday pervasive, deep-seated and institutionalized dominance of Christian values, Christian institutions, leaders and Christians as a group, primarily for the benefit of Christian ruling elites.”

Speaker Leonard Zeskind, citing work done by the MacIver Institute, explained that “the longer you are in the tea party the more racist you become.” He added, “Parents put their kids in private schools because they’re racist.”

University of Iowa Professor Adrien Wing gave some of her observations about white privilege, asking, “Does having a black president change that? Has it changed that? Unfortunately, it hasn’t. … (President Obama) ends up being the front man for the system. … He works for the master of the system of white privilege.”

I can’t imagine people being stupid enough to believe all that was said at the White Privilege Conference. There’s something else at work. I think it’s white guilt. That’s why, for almost three decades, there has appeared on my website a certificate of amnesty and pardon that I’ve granted to Americans of European ancestry in the hope that they stop feeling guilty and stop acting like fools (http://tinyurl.com/opd8vgd).

Maybe we ought to hold some leftist privilege conferences.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you our moral superiors in all their glory. I don’t think we can aspire to the heights of their moral superiority.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, the University of Wisconsin System, and the City of Madison have all sponsored a conference at which one organizer flatly declared that rape isn’t intrinsically bad.

The stunning exchange between an investigator and the unidentified organizer went like this:

Investigator: “Would you define discrimination as something intrinsically bad?”

Organizer: “No I wouldn’t say it’s intrinsically bad…As a sociologists, I think context means everything, history and context, and in some contexts I think some things are appropriate and other contexts…”

Investigator: “Rape isn’t intrinsically bad?”

Organizer: “It’s not.”

How original. There is nothing good or bad, but that we think it so.

It’s a pity we never do find out in which historic contexts discrimination is appropriate. Obviously we know that affirmative action discrimination is appropriate. But when else does the ideology of anti-racism think racism is appropriate.

Maybe instead of holding white privilege conferences, we ought to hold some leftist privilege conferences. And then leftists can unpack what they mean by rape and discrimination being appropriate in some contexts of their choosing.

I have checked it -- and I apologize for nothing.

Originally published by the The Princeton Tory.

There is a phrase that floats around college campuses, Princeton being no exception, that threatens to strike down opinions without regard for their merits, but rather solely on the basis of the person that voiced them. “Check your privilege,” the saying goes, and I have been reprimanded by it several times this year. The phrase, handed down by my moral superiors, descends recklessly, like an Obama-sanctioned drone, and aims laser-like at my pinkish-peach complexion, my maleness, and the nerve I displayed in offering an opinion rooted in a personal Weltanschauung. “Check your privilege,” they tell me in a command that teeters between an imposition to actually explore how I got where I am, and a reminder that I ought to feel personally apologetic because white males seem to pull most of the strings in the world.

I do not accuse those who “check” me and my perspective of overt racism, although the phrase, which assumes that simply because I belong to a certain ethnic group I should be judged collectively with it, toes that line. But I do condemn them for diminishing everything I have personally accomplished, all the hard work I have done in my life, and for ascribing all the fruit I reap not to the seeds I sow but to some invisible patron saint of white maleness who places it out for me before I even arrive. Furthermore, I condemn them for casting the equal protection clause, indeed the very idea of a meritocracy, as a myth, and for declaring that we are all governed by invisible forces (some would call them “stigmas” or “societal norms”), that our nation runs on racist and sexist conspiracies. Forget “you didn’t build that;” check your privilege and realize that nothing you have accomplished is real.

But they can’t be telling me that everything I’ve done with my life can be credited to the racist patriarchy holding my hand throughout my years of education and eventually guiding me into Princeton. Even that is too extreme. So to find out what they are saying, I decided to take their advice. I actually went and checked the origins of my privileged existence, to empathize with those whose underdog stories I can’t possibly comprehend. I have unearthed some examples of the privilege with which my family was blessed, and now I think I better understand those who assure me that skin color allowed my family and I to flourish today.

Perhaps it’s the privilege my grandfather and his brother had to flee their home as teenagers when the Nazis invaded Poland, leaving their mother and five younger siblings behind, running and running until they reached a Displaced Persons camp in Siberia, where they would do years of hard labor in the bitter cold until World War II ended. Maybe it was the privilege my grandfather had of taking on the local Rabbi’s work in that DP camp, telling him that the spiritual leader shouldn’t do hard work, but should save his energy to pass Jewish tradition along to those who might survive. Perhaps it was the privilege my great-grandmother and those five great-aunts and uncles I never knew had of being shot into an open grave outside their hometown. Maybe that’s my privilege.

Or maybe it’s the privilege my grandmother had of spending weeks upon weeks on a death march through Polish forests in subzero temperatures, one of just a handful to survive, only to be put in Bergen-Belsen concentration camp where she would have died but for the Allied forces who liberated her and helped her regain her health when her weight dwindled to barely 80 pounds.

Perhaps my privilege is that those two resilient individuals came to America with no money and no English, obtained citizenship, learned the language and met each other; that my grandfather started a humble wicker basket business with nothing but long hours, an idea, and an iron will—to paraphrase the man I never met: “I escaped Hitler. Some business troubles are going to ruin me?” Maybe my privilege is that they worked hard enough to raise four children, and to send them to Jewish day school and eventually City College.

Perhaps it was my privilege that my own father worked hard enough in City College to earn a spot at a top graduate school, got a good job, and for 25 years got up well before the crack of dawn, sacrificing precious time he wanted to spend with those he valued most—his wife and kids—to earn that living. I can say with certainty there was no legacy involved in any of his accomplishments. The wicker business just isn’t that influential. Now would you say that we’ve been really privileged? That our success has been gift-wrapped?

That’s the problem with calling someone out for the “privilege” which you assume has defined their narrative. You don’t know what their struggles have been, what they may have gone through to be where they are. Assuming they’ve benefitted from “power systems” or other conspiratorial imaginary institutions denies them credit for all they’ve done, things of which you may not even conceive. You don’t know whose father died defending your freedom. You don’t know whose mother escaped oppression. You don’t know who conquered their demons, or may still conquering them now.

The truth is, though, that I have been exceptionally privileged in my life, albeit not in the way any detractors would have it.
It has been my distinct privilege that my grandparents came to America. First, that there was a place at all that would take them from the ruins of Europe. And second, that such a place was one where they could legally enter, learn the language, and acclimate to a society that ultimately allowed them to flourish.

It was their privilege to come to a country that grants equal protection under the law to its citizens, that cares not about religion or race, but the content of your character.

It was my privilege that my grandfather was blessed with resolve and an entrepreneurial spirit, and that he was lucky enough to come to the place where he could realize the dream of giving his children a better life than he had.

But far more important for me than his attributes was the legacy he sought to pass along, which forms the basis of what detractors call my “privilege,” but which actually should be praised as one of altruism and self-sacrifice. Those who came before us suffered for the sake of giving us a better life. When we similarly sacrifice for our descendents by caring for the planet, it’s called “environmentalism,” and is applauded. But when we do it by passing along property and a set of values, it’s called “privilege.” (And when we do it by raising questions about our crippling national debt, we’re called Tea Party radicals.) Such sacrifice of any form shouldn’t be scorned, but admired.

My exploration did yield some results. I recognize that it was my parents’ privilege and now my own that there is such a thing as an American dream which is attainable even for a penniless Jewish immigrant.

I am privileged that values like faith and education were passed along to me. My grandparents played an active role in my parents’ education, and some of my earliest memories included learning the Hebrew alphabet with my Dad. It’s been made clear to me that education begins in the home, and the importance of parents’ involvement with their kids’ education—from mathematics to morality—cannot be overstated. It’s not a matter of white or black, male or female or any other division which we seek, but a matter of the values we pass along, the legacy we leave, that perpetuates “privilege.” And there’s nothing wrong with that.

Behind every success, large or small, there is a story, and it isn’t always told by sex or skin color. My appearance certainly doesn’t tell the whole story, and to assume that it does and that I should apologize for it is insulting. While I haven’t done everything for myself up to this point in my life, someone sacrificed themselves so that I can lead a better life. But that is a legacy I am proud of.

I have checked my privilege. And I apologize for nothing.

Why the Left made a dialogue about the “yellow complex” off-limits.

Remember when Attorney General Eric Holder called Americans a “nation of cowards” who put “certain subjects . . . off limits”? Holder, of course, was referring to “subjects” that in fact we do nothing else but talk about non-stop – the refusal of whites to admit the persistence of white racism and its responsibility for all the ills afflicting the black underclass. To quote Paul Krugman for this received wisdom, “Race is the Rosetta Stone that makes sense of many otherwise incomprehensible aspects of U.S. politics.”

Yet Holder was unwittingly accurate, for there is a subject the mainstream culture and political discourse never touches: what Harlem Renaissance novelist Claude McKay called the “yellow complex.” This is the psychological condition of light-skinned blacks that was explored in novels of the 1920s like McKay’s Home to Harlem and Wallace Thurman’s The Blacker the Berry. Back then, the mulatto or light-complexioned black, especially the well educated, lived in a social and psychological limbo, excluded by racism from the white world, and forced by segregation to live among darker blacks whom they often despised and looked down on. Yet darker blacks themselves experienced conflicting emotions, at once attracted to and resentful of the light-skinned who scorned them.

Thurman’s Emma Lou is a sympathetic portrait of this complex from the perspective of a woman whose mother is a mulatto, but who inherited her father’s black skin: “Emma Lou had been born in a semi-white world, totally surrounded by an all-white one, and those few dark elements that had forced their way in had either been shooed away or else greeted with derisive laughter.” When she matriculates at an exclusive Negro college, she despises Hazel, another dark-skinned girl who attempts to befriend her, as “just a vulgar little n***** from down South.” Emma Lou “was determined to become associated only with those people who really mattered, northerners like herself or superior southerners, if there were any, who were different from whites only in so far as skin color was concerned.” What she discovers, however, is that most of the light-skinned students to whom she is attracted despise her as much as she despises Hazel.

A creation of racism and segregation, the psychology explored in this persistent theme of classic black literature was supposedly transcended by the “black is beautiful” movement of the 1960s. In black identity politics the poles of value were reversed: the snobbish mulattoes or blacks who lived by so-called “white” values were attacked for “acting white,” and authentic black identity comprised everything that separated blacks from the white majority, whether complexion, accent, or especially political ideology, morality, and virtue. Blacks of any shade who adopted proper English, social decorum, or traditional virtues were scorned as “Uncle Toms” and “race traitors.” Though millions of American blacks rejected much of this ideology, it reshaped public discourse and popular culture, and created today’s racial orthodoxy.

Partly because of the understandable commitment to racial solidarity among the majority of blacks who just want to live their lives and get ahead like everybody else, publicly the melodrama of white racism has overshadowed all the other complexities of black American life. Yet those issues still exist, and no doubt are still alive among black people who are loath to break ranks in front of white people. The presidency of Barack Obama, however, has exposed how detrimental to our collective political life and race relations has been the refusal honestly to confront these issues, mostly by empowering a race industry that benefits the black elite and middle class, even as it worsens the plight of the black underclass.

Obama’s public career reflects some dimensions of the “yellow complex” that persist today. At the beginning of his political rise there was briefly some talk that he wasn’t “black” enough. After all, he was raised by whites in Hawaii, one of the whitest states, where he attended an exclusive prep school before moving on to exclusive, white-dominated universities. Joe Biden let the cat out of the bag when he said in 2007 that Obama was “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy.” A year later Harry Reid was amazed that Obama was “light-skinned” and had “no Negro dialect unless he wanted to have one.” In other words, not “black.” Jesse Jackson also revealed this tension in the black community when he responded to candidate Obama’s “moral lectures” to blacks by saying, “I wanna cut his nuts out” for “talking down to black people.” Perhaps Jackson heard the snobbery of Emma Lou in Obama’s scolding. But the media and race-industry quickly snuffed out these modern evocations of the “yellow complex,” with Biden, Reid, and Jackson all issuing groveling apologies. Ever since then, Obama’s public persona is of an authentic “black man,” that is, a victim of white racism (“If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon”) fighting to improve the lives of his struggling “brothers” and “sisters.”

Yet is it just a coincidence that Obama has been surrounded by so many lighter-skinned blacks who, like himself, come from middle or upper class backgrounds? There’s Jeremiah Wright, Obama’s trusted counselor until he had to be thrown under the bus when his racist sermons were exposed. His father was a Baptist minister, his mother a high school teacher and a vice-principal. Obama’s senior advisor and closest confidante is Valerie Jarrett. Her father is a pathologist and geneticist, and she spent her early life in Iran and London. She is a Stanford graduate with a J.D. from Michigan law school. Eric Holder’s father and maternal grandmother were immigrants from Barbados. His father was a real-estate broker. He graduated from Columbia University with a B.A. and J.D. Susan Rice’s father was a Cornell University economics professor and the second black governor of the Federal Reserve, and her mother is a fellow at the Brookings Institute. Her grandparents emigrated from Jamaica. Rice is a Stanford and Oxford graduate. In other words, all of them are untypical of the lives of ordinary black Americans whose ancestors were slaves or lived under legal segregation.

All of this should be irrelevant, and would be if Martin Luther King’s dream that blacks be judged by character rather than color had been realized. But the racial orthodoxy created by identity politics assumes a Jim Crow one-drop rule that bestows on every black in America – no matter how privileged, no matter if their parents and ancestors, like Obama’s, never suffered through American slavery and legal segregation – the mantle of victim of racism, which qualifies them to be spokesmen and less threatening proxies for millions of other black Americans who lack their advantages. By this ahistorical and incoherent racialist calculus, the child of a Kentucky coal miner or a Dust Bowl migrant has more social capital by virtue of a genetically endowed “white skin privilege” than a half-white Harvard-trained lawyer. The immense advantages bestowed by parents with college degrees and non-ghetto zip codes are invisible. Many middle and upper class blacks enjoy what David Horowitz and John Perazzo call “black skin privilege,” even as in the sixth year of Obama’s presidency millions of their underclass fellows remain mired in unemployment, dependence, crime, addiction, and broken homes.

The “yellow complex” is just one of the necessary topics of the adult conversation about race in America we should be having. Of course, after the Civil Rights movement, affirmative action programs, and the expansion of the black middle class, complexion has not been as important as socio-economic class, education, and especially politics. But it still is a factor, and one necessary to address if we want a dialogue on race that, rather than trading in crude simplifications of “black” and “white” identity, instead acknowledges those nuances and complexities that liberals claim to love so much. But don’t hold your breath waiting for those “embarrassing” subjects, as Holder called them, to go public. Too many people get too many economic and political benefits from keeping things just as they are, no matter how many generations of black Americans have to be sacrificed.

A melanin-deficient Santa remains the default in commercials

As Oprah might say, “America will only make progress when old white Santa is dead.”

Aisha Harris, one of Slate’s experts in the field of everything being racist, describes feeling “insecurity and shame” over Santa’s race.

Two decades later, America is less and less white, but a melanin-deficient Santa remains the default in commercials, mall casting calls, and movies. Isn’t it time that our image of Santa better serve all the children he delights each Christmas?

Not to mention female Santa, disabled Santa and transgendered Santa. But Aisha Harris has a perfectly reasonable solution.

I propose that America abandon Santa-as-fat-old-white-man and create a new symbol of Christmas cheer. From here on out, Santa Claus should be a penguin…

Making Santa Claus an animal rather than an old white male could spare millions of nonwhite kids the insecurity and shame that I remember from childhood…

That this genial, jolly man can only be seen as white—and consequently, that a Santa of any other hue is merely a “joke” or a chance to trudge out racist stereotypes—helps perpetuate the whole “white-as-default” notion endemic to American culture (and, of course, not just American culture).

Santa is the new/old face of white privilege. But what is Aisha Harris planning to do about Jesus, since this is Christmas after all? Replace him with a penguin?

And once we’re on a penguin kick, why not replace the Founding Fathers with penguins to avoid the pernicious idea that the American default is white. To balance things out, we’ll also replace Martin Luther King with a penguin.

We can’t stop there.

There are still more white people than black people in this country. Even with birth rate demographics, it’s going to take a while until the vast majority of adults are non-white. Until that day comes, the government can mandate that everyone buy and wear penguin masks.

Everyone likes penguins. As long as they’re not albino penguins.

It would seem that New Mexico got its own Abner Louima case. And this time the race of the victim is white.

The horrifying story about a man who was subject to repeated anal probes over a completely baseless suspicion that he was harboring drugs because he was “clenching his buttocks” has been widely reported already…

While there, Eckert was subjected to repeated and humiliating forced medical procedures. A review of Eckert’s medical records, which he released to KOB, and details in the lawsuit show the following happened:

1. Eckert’s abdominal area was x-rayed; no narcotics were found.

2. Doctors then performed an exam of Eckert’s anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

3. Doctors performed a second exam of Eckert’s anus with their fingers; no narcotics were found.

4. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

5. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema a second time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

6. Doctors penetrated Eckert’s anus to insert an enema a third time. Eckert was forced to defecate in front of doctors and police officers. Eckert watched as doctors searched his stool. No narcotics were found.

7. Doctors then x-rayed Eckert again; no narcotics were found.
8. Doctors prepared Eckert for surgery, sedated him, and then performed a colonoscopy where a scope with a camera was inserted into Eckert’s anus, rectum, colon, and large intestines. No narcotics were found.

…but his lawyer is saying that the stop was racial.

The apparent justification for the search, Kennedy said, was that police believed Eckert’s buttocks were clenched during the traffic stop.

But, she said, it’s also possible the officers just didn’t like how her client looks.

“Maybe the officers who did this don’t like him living in their community,” said Kennedy. “He’s a white boy, a scraggly white boy, and all these officers are Hispanic. It’s a New Mexico thing.”

I blame white privilege.

With the War in Afghanistan won and the Taliban defeated, not to mention an attack on the Benghazi mission successfully repulsed with a combination of air power and the United States Marines, the Pentagon is free to go on focusing on important things, like expensive Green fuels for ships, promoting gay marriage and fighting White Privilege.

This brings us closer to fulfilling the progressive dream of the day when a Marine will be indistinguishable from a community organizer and just as useless in a fight.

A controversial 600-plus page manual used by the military to train its Equal Opportunity officers teaches that “healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian” men hold an unfair advantage over other races, and warns in great detail about a so-called “White Male Club.”

“Simply put, a healthy, white, heterosexual, Christian male receives many unearned advantages of social privilege, whereas a black, homosexual, atheist female in poor health receives many unearned disadvantages of social privilege,” reads a statement in the manual created by the Defense Equal Opportunity Management Institute (DEOMI).

DEOMI instructors were also responsible for briefings at bases around the country that falsely labeled evangelical Christians, Catholics and a number of high-profile Christian ministries as domestic hate groups.

The subject of white privilege emerged in a 20-page section titled, “Power and Privilege.”

“Whites are the empowered group,” the manual declares. “White males represent the haves as compared to the have-nots.”

The military document advises personnel to “assume racism is everywhere, every day” and “notice code words for race.” They are also instructed to “understand and learn from the history of whiteness and racism.”

On page 181 of the manual, the military points out that status and wealth are typically passed from generation to generation and “represent classic examples of the unearned advantages of social privilege.”

Like being the grandson of a bank president and the son of a diplomat who is selected for his teleprompter-reading abilities to be the leader of the free world… because he’s black.

Earned advantages of social privilege like that,

Short answer, it’s lib on lib political violence and an identity politics conflict.

There’s been a conflict within the feminist movement for a while stirred up by self-identified “Women of Color” who claim that the white feminist establishment marginalizes them.

Like a lot of the left’s insane internecine struggles, this one is ridiculously ugly and ridiculously pointless to anyone on the outside. The so-called women of color claim that white feminism is racist based on… pretty much a variation of the old white privilege argument that all white people are racist and instinctively dominate everything without even knowing it.

(This has a certain ironic resemblance to Kevin McDonald’s similar argument about Jews. It almost makes you wonder whether McDonald just ripped off white privilege and applied it to Jews or whether some leftists decided that McDonald’s argument about Jews is worth applying to white people in general.)

Like most of the left’s ideological wars, this is really about activists using identity politics to angle for power within the movement.

Lately the WOC tagline has been the hashtag #solidarityisforwhitewomen. This is an improvement over its old White Womens Tears. Like 99 percent of identity politics, it can be summed up as

1. You don’t understand our pain!

2. Give us more power!

As obnoxious as this kind of thing is within the feminist context, it becomes even more toxic when its proponents begin applying it to creative fields.

What that means is denouncing writers who use black characters as racist for commodifying black stories, white musicians as racist for commodifying black music, etc. The theme is that only official black people should be able to make use of these things.

It’s really a toxic form of special affirmative action that doesn’t just seek privileges, but to entirely exclude white people, and it’s becoming a problem in certain fields where white liberals suddenly find themselves being mau-maued by psychotic talentless people whose only calling card is their black skin privilege. It can be funny to watch, but is still an online flashback to the 70s.

Both came together around the Miley Cyrus thing as white feminists defended her, only to be attacked by the loonier WOC core of activists for commodifying black music and culture and othering them. If I were black and white people wanted to take twerking, I would pay them to take it. But that’s not what this is really about. This is about racializing everything in order to politicize it and then write long essays about how you wished your hair was straight while growing up and how white feminists don’t care about that.

In other words, it’s like MSNBC but even worse.

Government officials caught red-handed promoting racist left-wing ideology.

To read and order David Horowitz and John Perazzo’s pamphlet, Black Skin Privilege, click here.

CNS News reports that the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI), the state agency that purports to advance public education and libraries, recently promoted materials urging its white VISTA volunteers to obsess over the “privilege” their race apparently confers on them.

AmeriCorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) is a national service program whose members commit to serve full-time for a year at a nonprofit organization or local government agency, working to fight illiteracy, improve health services, create businesses, and strengthen community groups. DPI notes that its VISTA volunteers serve in schools that are culturally and racially diverse, and therefore DPI provides “multiple opportunities for training…that help the volunteers better serve the schools and communities in which they are placed.”

Part of that training apparently includes helping the white VISTA volunteers understand the degree to which they unknowingly have been “privileged” socio-economically by the color of their skin. Toward that end, the “VISTA Hub” of the DPI site includes a page devoted entirely to “Power and Privilege.” CNS News reported that the page included links to racial justice workshops and online tests where VISTA volunteers can “learn about your personal bias.” So begins the process of brainwashing the volunteers into believing that the invisible lubricant of a collective racial privilege they didn’t even know they had has greased their path to an imbalance of power and prosperity.

One of the “diversity” training documents linked to the site suggests that white people “wear a white wristband as a reminder about your privilege, and as a personal commitment to explain why you wear the wristband.” It also suggests that white people ponder questions such as “How do I ignore privilege? What am I doing today to undo my privilege? How do I fool myself into thinking I am powerless?” For those white people who might find their thoughts drifting away from such self-flagellation during the day, here are its other suggestions for keeping unearned guilt in the forefront of one’s consciousness:

Set aside sections of the day to critically examine how privilege is working.

Put a note on your mirror or computer screen as a reminder to think about privilege.

Make a daily list of the ways privilege played out, and steps taken or not taken to address privilege.

Find a person of color who is willing to hold you accountable for addressing privilege.

This newfound awareness shouldn’t end with you, however; it should extend to everyone you interact with: “Not only should you examine the kind of privilege you bring to your (work) site but also how power is distributed among the families, community members, and students you work with,” the “Power and Privilege” page said. Presumably the next step would be to work toward the redistribution of that power. At the top of the page, CNS notes, was a quotation from feminist Gloria Steinem that reads, “The first problem for all of us, men and women, is not to learn, but to unlearn.”

That quote is gone now, as is all the other controversial material on the web page. It’s been replaced by an “Important Updated Message” claiming that the DPI has been the victim of “misconceptions and misinformation being spread by an out-of-state entity that has no connection with the work being done in public schools in Wisconsin.” The message doesn’t address why the DPI has a web page devoted to countering white “privilege” in the first place, indicating approval for such racist indoctrination; instead, it focuses entirely on distancing DPI from responsibility for only one aspect of the controversial training material – the white wristband worn as a reminder of race guilt:

First and foremost, and to be absolutely clear, no DPI official has asked, requested, or encouraged any school district, educator, or student to wear any wristband, and none of our VISTA volunteers have had any children put on any wristbands. To be clear, no Wisconsin students were given white wristbands.

The offending document may be gone from that DPI web page, but here it is, retrieved elsewhere from the Internet. It is attributed to a New Jersey organization called “Beyond Diversity Resource Center,” whose mission is “to build a society that sincerely honors individuals because of their cultural differences.” The site promotes a workbook on racial privilege for white people and The Anti-Racist Cookbook, a “recipe guide” for initiating conversations about race. Apparently they haven’t heard actor Morgan Freeman’s famous solution for combating racism: “Stop talking about it.”

Among the workshops about oppression and black incarceration offered by Beyond Diversity is one built around a book called Colorblind: The Rise of Post-Racial Politics and the Retreat from Racial Equality, which astonishingly argues that “the best way forward is to become more, not less, conscious of race” and “that colorblind policies actually worsen the problem of racial injustice.” The book is written by radical Tim Wise, who, as his page on the Freedom Center’s Discover the Networks site notes, finds the U.S. prison system racist and advocates reparations not only to the descendants of slaves, but to all “people of color.”

The Freedom Center has countered the race-obsessed left’s hateful – and by definition racist – construct of “white privilege” with a recent pamphlet, available online, by David Horowitz and John Perazzo called “Black Skin Privilege and the American Dream.” It points out that “the term ‘white skin privilege’ was first popularized in the 1970s by the SDS radicals of ‘Weatherman,’ who were carrying on a terrorist war against ‘Amerikkka.’” It has since become “an article of faith among all progressives, a concept that accounted for everything… racially wrong in America beginning with its constitutional founding.”

The pamphlet notes that the radical left’s goal is to ensure that “this collectivist view of guilt and debts that erases individuals and their accountability” becomes ingrained in the consciousness of white America, supposedly to level the socio-economic playing field for “people of color.” But as Horowitz and Perazzo observe:

In a free society composed of unequal individuals, the drive to level the playing field is a totalitarian desire and a threat to freedom because it empowers government to confiscate the talents and earnings of some for the benefits of those it favors.

Not equality for all, but for those the government favors. For the race-mongering left, the “white privilege” fabrication isn’t so much about redressing inequality as seizing power. So much for our “most-racial” President’s promise of a post-racial America.

If on April 14th, you find yourself standing on the edge of a bridge looking down into the swift waters wondering whether you should jump or go to the White Privilege Conference at the University of Colorado… you should probably jump.

Anyone who invokes a claim of White Privilege is already a racist. Holding a conference on the topic of why some people are evil based on the color of their skin with the backing of the University of Denver and Goddard College is like a Klan rally being held at MIT. The White Privilege Conference is predictably backed by the Seattle Housing Authority, which has been going rather crazy lately. And even more predictably, most of these social justice projects are really about the money.

The theme of the White Privilege Conference is “The Color of Money: Reclaiming our Humanity.” It’s the money part that really matters because 99% of these racial social justice gimmicks are about ways to drag more money out of the government for the benefit of hucksters running social justice organizations.

There’s a reason that Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton will never have to work for a living and they have a legion of imitators promising social justice at cut rate prices.

The White Privilege Conference stays true to its name by offering the next generation of radical money grabs for social justice.

And what does that mean? Government guaranteed jobs.

That’s right. They’re guaranteed. They’re from the government. How can this go wrong?

The federal government should establish a National Investment Employment Corps offering all citizens 18 years of age and above an employment guarantee at a minimum salary of $20,000 with $10,000 in benefits, including medical coverage and retirement support. An upper bound estimate of the expense of the program can be established by putting all 15 million persons unemployed at the peak of this crisis at a mean salary of $40,000, inclusive of materials and equipment per worker, with $10,000 in benefits. The total compensation package would amount to $750 billion,

Well that’s great. Only 3/4 of a trillion a year at a time when we’re already running trillion dollar deficits each year. And we can’t afford to subsidize the guaranteed jobs at the Post Office anymore.

But what would the people at these Guaranteed Government Jobs do? Besides take money from people who actually go to work.

This could include the construction, staffing and provision of high quality preschools, computer repair, upgrade and maintenance, sanitation workers, flood and other disaster service workers in hospitals and schools, and the extension, repair and maintenance of the public transportation infrastructure

So we’re going to put 15 million people to work renovating preschools, providing disaster relief and fixing roads?

Even though Obama has spent the last four years shrieking that all our bridges are about to fall down, I really think 15 million people are a bit much for that.

With 15 million people we could build a build a bridge to China.

And at some point all the preschools will be finally renovated. The infrastructure will be in decent enough shape that the existing maintenance crews can take care of it and there won’t be a large enough disaster that 15 million people will be needed to clean up for it.

And then what will that 15 million people do?

But think of it as an investment

Furthermore, the income paid to the employees of the National Investment Employment Corps would restore tax bases at the state and municipal levels, alleviating their current budget crises

So the taxpayers will pay 3/4 of a trillion dollars to people to renovate preschools and these people will barely make enough money from the government to pay taxes on… but this will somehow restore the tax base?

I’m not sure that even Paul Krugman could get behind this math.

But if Gov.Jobs.Bankruptcy doesn’t thrill you, there’s a Baby Bond, which I would be very surprised if Obama didn’t propose in a future State of the Union address, to redistribute wealth over to minority children from birth.

We are not optimistic about the public will to directly address the racial wealth gap. Indeed, the surge in the post-racial perspective has moved the public sentiment strongly away from race specific social policies. But all is not lost. Since the distributions of white and non-white wealth are so disparate—85% of black families have wealth holdings below the median white family—wealth can be an effective non-race based instrument to eliminate racial inequality. A shift from an income based means test to a wealth based means test for transfer programs.

The Savings for Education, Entrepreneurship, and Down-payment (SEED) initiative which establishes Children’s Development Accounts (CDA) (what Manny Marable refers to as “Baby Bonds”) to create endowed trusts for children at birth.

The United Kingdom has moved beyond the demonstration stage. Beginning in 2005, every newborn in the UK receives a trust ranging from 250 to 500 pounds depending on familial resources.

Every year since 2004 the American Savings for Personal Investment Retirement and Education (ASPIRE) is introduced in congress to established universal CDAs in the U.S. (see Sherraden2009 for more details). Since the nation’s black president eschews race specific policies, perhaps a strongly amended ASPIRE bill designed to progressively distribute funds based on familial net worth can be the policy that enables him to “bind…[black America’s] grievances … to the larger aspirations of all Americans.”

We envision a “baby bond” plan of much greater scale and magnitude—progressively rising to $50,000 or $60,000 for children in families in the lowest wealth quartile and accessible once the child turns 18 years of age.

…the baby bond program would cost about $60 billion per annum

No reason this can’t work. I mean most lottery winners do well with their money. Dumping 60 grand on an 18-year-old kid whose big dream until this point was to be a rap star can’t possibly go wrong.

For anyone keeping track, we just passed 800 billion dollars in social justice spending.

And if blowing 60 billion a year, that we don’t have, so a bunch of 18 year olds can have the best summer of their lives doesn’t appeal to your deep sense of white guilt, how about attacking the axes of ability?

The White Privilege Conference journal will be taking an axe to all the axes of privilege. That includes ability. What, you didn’t know your ability was an axe, you ax?

Like the WPC, the journal is committed to examining not only white privilege and oppression, but the intersections of systems of privilege based on race, gender, sexuality, class, religion, ability, nationality, and other axes of inequality.

I want to hear about more religious privilege, but I want to hear even more about ability privilege. And if you want to learn more about why you should feel ashamed at your skin color, religion, gender, nationality, sexuality, ability to get up out of bed in the morning…

… come to the White Privilege Conference and Matrix Center at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. It’s got the word Matrix in it, so it’s bound to be good.

If you don’t go, you’re racist.

An African American Studies Professor teaches America a lesson in racist hate.

White privilege consists of being white. Black privilege consists of denouncing white people in ways that would be considered racist if the shoe were on the other foot.

Dr. Marc Lamont Hill, a man whose website modestly describes him as a “Professor, Author, Speaker, Public Intellectual,” has assembled a list of what he believes are the 15 most overrated white people to prove the point. Any college faculty member who tried assembling a list of the 15 most overrated black people would soon be the target of the most overzealous witch-hunt since Salem.

But if we were assembling a list of overrated black people, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill might just deserve his own place on the notepad. Hill’s bio is the usual intriguing world of African-American academia, complete with essays on social commentary in Hip Hop. Hill writes, so he’s an author. He speaks, so he’s a speaker. And he was once a weekly contributor to the Star Jones talk show, so he’s clearly a public intellectual. Best of all, he’s an affiliated faculty member in African American Studies at the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University. IRAAS has a logo that features two iguanas mating and offers all the usual navel-gazing courses that exist only to waste tuition money, except they’re African-American navel-gazing courses.

Dr. Marc Lamont Hill’s list of the 15 most overrated white people displays exactly the intellectual rigor you would expect from a man affiliated with such a fine academic institution. It isn’t a list that’s oriented around anything but race. To be on the list, you can be a playwright, a musician, an economist, a football player or a politician. You can be American or European. You can be alive in the present day or dead for 400 years. It doesn’t really matter so long as you’re white.

This is racism, but it’s also the kind of mindless unthinking racism that we have long ago come to expect from social justice commentators doing their best Malcolm X imitations while having lunch in the faculty dining room and public intellectuals whose intellectual activity consists of saying racist things about white people and then defending their racism with the ubiquitous cry of white privilege.

Hill denounces Christopher Columbus, the man whose discovery made Hill’s entire profitable career possible, and William Shakespeare, the man who helped shape the language that Hill mangles while giving a tiny fraction of the world his thoughts on how much change is needed. (A lot. When it comes to change, the answer is always a lot.)

But where would Dr. Marc Lamont Hill be without that “immoral treasure hunter,” Christopher Columbus? If we asked Hill that question, we would have to sit through a long answer about slavery and slave boats. And he’s right. If Christopher Columbus had never existed, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill may very well be a slave. Slavery existed in Africa and the Middle East long before Columbus and it went on existing there after it was abolished in the United States.

Had Europe stayed out of America and out of Africa, the African slave trade would never have been disrupted by European colonialism and the millions of slaves who wound up shipped to America would never have found a place where millions of overrated white people would fight to free them from bondage.

Slavery still exists in the Muslim world and as a slave in Africa or the Middle East, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill would have been little better off than many of them. If not for Christopher Columbus, the odds are good that Dr. Lamont would not have a PhD, he would have a hoe. Indeed when overrated white people did liberate slaves and helped set up an African-American colony in Liberia, one of the first things that those former slaves did was set up their own system of forced labor for the African natives.

But black privilege means existing in a world where none of that matters; a world where a man who writes books on “Hip Hop Pedagogy” feels entitled to diss William Shakespeare. And who needs Shakespeare anyway? The guy probably never even listened to Jay-Z. According to Hill, Shakespeare is only well known because of “narrow-minded educational systems”; the kind that don’t teach Hip Hop.

Through Hill’s black privilege gaze, Reagan and Clinton are reduced to overrated figures guilty of shrinking the welfare state. And if all you can see is your entitlement to welfare checks, then that’s all that matters about two presidents in pivotal periods of American history. That’s black privilege too.

According to Hill’s black privilege, Elvis and Tim Tebow are only popular because they’re white and so he goes down the list of white people who took away all the fame that rightfully belonged to black people. Babe Ruth was only good because he played in a segregated league, Shakespeare probably couldn’t have measured up to Alice Walker and the NHL is just taking away attention from the NBA.

It’s arrogant, it’s racist and it’s also commonplace. It might be possible to assemble a list of overrated black people, but Dr. Marc Lamont Hill wouldn’t be on it because to be overrated, you first have to rate. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill is uninteresting as a figure; he attracts attention only as a specimen of the vapid core of what passes for African-American Studies.

Unlike any of the men he has listed, Dr. Marc Lamont Hill has contributed nothing, but he is in a position to contribute nothing. His entire field, like his article, is based around the negative; existing to take up space, to attract attention, to work up anger and to suck up money.

African-American Studies isn’t a research field; it’s what happens when grievance becomes academic. Dr. Marc Lamont Hill isn’t a public intellectual; he’s a poser in a field full of them.

White privilege is a degree in the post-evocative phase in semi-structured experiences. Black privilege is a degree in African-American post-evocative semi-structured experiences. The former is a fancy way of saying nothing at all. The latter is a fancy way of saying nothing at all while blaming white people for it.

Arrest of Duke rape accuser Crystal Mangum exposes the Left’s race-baiting immorality play.

Visit Newsreal

“She was black, they were white, and race and sex were in the air.” That’s how a Washington Post columnist described the atmosphere that led to the brutal gang rape of Crystal Mangum by a group of Duke University lacrosse players in 2006. You remember, right? That was the violent, racially motivated hate crime that never happened.

Mangum is in the news again, but this time she won’t find an army of race-obsessed charlatans, Marxist demagogues, and pandering politicians speeding to her defense. The Left only rolls out that treatment for struggling black single mothers when their harrowing tales bolster an ideological agenda. Pulling off the “virtuous victim of white privilege” shtick won’t be easy when Mangum faces charges of child abuse, arson, and attempted murder.

Guilty or innocent, the stripper who cried wolf is on her own this time. She was only worthy of the support of Jesse Jackson, NOW, the New Black Panther Party, and the Duke University “gang of 88” as long as she was able to help weave a compelling narrative of misogyny, class warfare, racial inequity, and systemic injustice.

Two weeks after Crystal Mangum falsely accused the Duke athletes of rape, English Professor Houston Baker publicly condemned the University’s “moral response to abhorrent sexual assault, verbal racial violence, and drunken white male privilege loosed amongst us.” In a letter to University Provost Peter Lange, he wrote:

The lacrosse team – 15 of whom have faced misdemeanor charges for drunken misbehavior in the past three years – may well feel they can claim innocence and sport their disgraced jerseys on campus, safe under the cover of silent whiteness. But where is the black woman who their violence and raucous witness injured for life? Will she ever sleep well again?

If Professor Baker and his Duke colleagues cared so much about Crystal Mangum getting a good night’s sleep, what did they do to prevent her from landing in prison on attempted murder and child abuse charges? If her race and socioeconomic status were enough to merit destroying the lives of a “scummy bunch of white males,” why did they abandon this underprivileged black woman without getting her the help she so obviously needed?

Mangum was a deeply troubled woman long before she falsely accused the Duke University athletes of rape. Her history of mental illness and unsubstantiated rape and violence claims began in her teenage years, and alcohol abuse has been part of the picture as well.

But that didn’t matter to the Duke faculty members who seized upon her false rape account to stir up racial animosity and resentment of “white, male, athletic privilege.” She made a convenient weapon in the race, class, and gender warfare waged by academics and abetted by the media and the reprehensible former district attorney, Mike Nifong.

Malik Zulu Shabazz, national chairman of the New Black Panther Party proclaimed, “to us she is a righteous and divine woman by nature.” 88 Duke faculty members jumped to her defense (and all but convicted the athletes) in a full-page ad that described a poisonous environment of racial hatred. And of course, the Rev. Jesse Jackson showed up to highlight the plight of a black single mother terrorized by a culture of rampant racism and sexism.

Mangum’s affirmative action qualifications became less valuable when evidence clearing the lacrosse players forced her to turn in her righteous victimhood card. To the Left, she was a cause, not a human being. When she couldn’t maintain the hoax, she wasn’t any less black or any less female. But she was no longer a politically useful black single mother, and thus, no longer of value to the race hustlers and class warmongers who rushed to her aid.

Once Crystal Mangum outlived her usefulness as the personification of social injustice in their heavy handed race baiting immorality play, the Left moved on without apology. And Mangum returned to her troubled life as just another ex-poster child for the leftist agenda, a mentally unstable, alcohol soaked liar who was chewed up and spit out by people in a position to help stop her from ruining more lives, including those of her three young children.
