As the ancient proverb says, “if at first you don’t succeed at doing the idiotic thing you were trying to do, raise the price and try to do it all over again.”
CNN’s effort to launch CNN+, a paid streaming service, at a time when its core ratings are crashing is confusing observers who wonder why the news network thinks people will pay for CNN when they won’t even watch it for free.
CNN President Jeff Zucker billed CNN+ as being for “CNN superfans, news junkies and fans of quality non-fiction programming.”
Spoiler alert: CNN superfans are almost as real as Bigfoot and less likely to be spotted in the wild.
CNN charged $2.99 a month for CNN+ which launched in March of 2022, at a cost of $300 million, and shut down in April 2022, at a cost of $300 million.
Now let’s do it all over again but charge even more.
CNN is trying again at a full-service streaming subscription.
The news network announced Thursday its “All Access” subscription will launch in the U.S. on October 28 and cost $6.99 per month or $69.99 annually.
People didn’t want it for $4 a month in 2022, but with inflation, surely they will be ready to pay $7.00 a month for it. Right?
What are CNN’s ratings again?
Among all cable networks, CNN slipped to eighth place from sixth in total viewers and dropped from No. 13 to No. 21 in the demo during primetime. It fell to sixth place from fourth during total day with total viewers and dropped down one spot to No. 9 in the demo.
When you’re in eighth place and dropping, it’s the perfect time to launch a paid streaming service because when people won’t watch you for free, surely they’ll pay to do it.

CNN? That would be like paying to watch the Obama Channel or Heels Up Harris Channel. People would rather watch their own body parts be chopped off. “Hassan chop!”
If you subscribe to netflix you’re stuck with obama. harris, not yet.
Wow! Not just one CNN but two.
Guaranteed to be more fun than eating dirt.
I’m not one to enjoy the suffering the others, but witnessing their bewilderment as the earth crumbles beneath their feet, their embarrassment as they are blithely dismissed by the objects of their disdain, and their growing sense of horror as they fade like ghosts, unable to affect the corporeal world, has been exquisitely delightful and extremely satisfying.
Do companies pay to advertise on CNN? If so, why?
What a concept, doing the same thing over and over while expecting a different result.
So now the Crumby News Network will bribe people into watching their Fake News just Ignore the whole thing Boycott CNN into total Ruin
It’s a bold plan Cotton… let’s see how it works out for them.
“for…news junkies and fans of quality non-fiction programming.” That’s why I don’t watch CNN, it’s fake news and leftist propaganda.
FWIW:
I stopped watching CNN in the mid 1990s. I realized back then that CNN was less than objective in their news reporting. I had came to the realization that CNN was a media front for the DNC hiding behind the facade of being a legitimate news organization.
Of course, I could’ve been hasty in that realization back then but time and the amassed objective facts have proven my instincts correct.
And now CNN wants to charge a 70$ fee to watch? Over their dead body!!
Maybe CNN is hoping for the Veblen effect! (Eyes of readers who can’t understand how tariffs might get passed on to consumers glaze over.)
Aisha Imsix:
Or readers who can’t understand why tariffs are sometimes necessary. Without necessary and proper tariffs, virtually nothing would be manufactured in the US and most of the food products we consume. would be imported.
Why pay US minimum wage when you can pay a wage of 5 dollars per day in some turd world (i.e., 3rd world) country to manufacture products for you? Who needs American farmers when everything they grow can be imported at a far cheaper? Shareholders profits trumps the lives and needs of the American people.
On the other side, most things manufactured here in America and sold abroad are either priced beyond what people in other countries can afford or outright banned. In other worlds, countries put tariffs on American products. Putting tariff on their products is called leveling the playing field.
I’m reminded of an old joke that used to make the rounds in satirical media.
“First Prize is one case of Snicker Snacks.”
“And what’s Second Prize?”
“Two cases.”
Add this to the long list of decisions by the powerful elite that are certain to go wrong.. Anyone with half a brain could see that freeing criminals will increase crime; that net zero would increase costs, make energy scarcer, and make society poorer; that biological males competing in girls sports is unfair, and on and on and on….
I say, “Let the leftist morons spend their money on stupid fake news shows…
After all, idiots of a feather flock together…
Sorry. I’m busy watching paint dry.
Long ago I worked for a multi-division company. We had a combined management retreat to “exchange ideas”. I had a good relationship with a few guys from another division and asked why they did such illogical (I actually said STUPID) things. One guy said their Corporate Motto was “TSLDI”! I told him I’d never seen that acronym and he said it stands for That’s Stupid Let’s Do It!! After that division shut down I guess some of the more senior management must have migrated to cnn! Personally, I wouldn’t watch it if THEY PAID ME $7.00 PER MINUTE!
CNN may appear ridiculous in its practices. A similar example of this was a company that made frozen fish sticks. Its sales were behind the competition. It studied the others and found they were charging more for a product of lower quality. So the company raised its prices and reduced its quality. Sales increased. That is a sad reflection of the nature of consumers. However, CNN has competition not only of better quality, but others competing to lower quality that may be able to do worse better cheaper.
