How quickly does Hollywood become irrelevant? As quickly as a bunch of producers can tether a name actor, Ben Kingsley, to a widely known property that no one owns, the Bible, and fill in the rest with AI.
The AI is obvious, ugly and the end results are not especially appealing, but the low bar here is making something less offensive than Exodus Gods and Kings. Are people going to be deterred by the AI?
Probably not. And the AI is going to get better. Conventional Hollywood filmmaking won’t.
I’m not celebrating this, let alone promoting it, but we’re on an inevitable trajectory and once audiences get comfortable with movies that have a handful of actors while AI is used to fill in crowd scenes (CG is already used for that), cities and buildings (ditto) and effects (well obviously) the economics will change dramatically.
What happens when a movie that used to cost $300 million to make can be shot for a fraction of that?
And more specifically, what happens to Hollywood and its grip on the culture?
Oh well, I’ve got a lot of books that need reading, and they are certainly more intellectually and spiritually fulfilling than anything digital, not to mention in touch with reality.
What’s more, this can ultimately be done by anyone anywhere and dubbed into any language and with accurate lip-syncing and in much less time. However, I’m not approving of this, it’s just reality. Sad.

If I want to see Moses and Ramses, I’ll watch Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner in “The ten Commandments.” That one never gets old. “LET MY PEOPLE GO!”
Maybe he should protect American jobs by making it illegal to use AI. President Trump has imposed tariffs to “protect American jobs.” Government control of AI is exactly what…wait for it…Bernie Sanders just supported in an essay in the Wall Street Journal last week. People who understand international trade should read Don Boudreaux’s successful criticism of Sanders position.
I think, to create more jobs in the U.S., we should outlaw combines. Think of all the farm jobs that will be created! Next, outlaw tractors and shovels. Having to dig with spoons will create tons of jobs! It will be Liberation Day II ! We’ll all be liberated from the scourge of technology and the evil of low prices. A bonus is how those diggers will be at one with Mother Earth!
