Marijuana lobbyists promised states like Colorado and California that they could legalize marijuana and make lots of money.
What actually happened is that the illegal businesses, especially those controlled by cartels and triads, soared, while the ‘legal’ taxable businesses struggled to compete because of high taxes and high prices. Social problems caused by a boom in marijuana use soared, boosting the homeless crisis in Denver, ground zero for drug legalization, and major cities where pot had been legalized.
There’s also another side effect.
As legalization and commercialization of cannabis have spread across the United States, making marijuana edibles more readily available, the number of cannabis-related incidents reported to poison control centers has sharply increased: from about 930 cases in 2009 to more than 22,000 last year, data from America’s Poison Centers shows. Of those, more than 13,000 caused documented negative effects and were classified by the organization as nonlethal poisonings. These numbers are almost certainly an undercount, public health officials say, because hospitals are not required to report such cases. More than 75 percent of the poisonings last year involved children or teenagers. In 2009, just 10 such cases were reported to poison centers; last year, there were more than 620 — a vast majority of them children or teens. More than 100 required ventilators. Dr. Robert Hendrickson, an emergency physician and professor at Oregon Health & Science University, said that in recent years he has treated more patients for cannabis poisoning, including a toddler who ended up in the I.C.U. after eating a cannabis cookie. “The child had a seizure and then was put on a ventilator” and had several more seizures, he said. The toxicity of cannabis depends largely on the potency of the product and the size of the person. A high enough dose of T.H.C. can be so sedating that a person’s tongue blocks his windpipe, or it can trigger a seizure that requires intubation. But in general, an adult would have to consume a very large amount of cannabis to get that ill, doctors said: It might take hundreds or even thousands of milligrams of T.H.C. to cause severe side effects in a 150-pound adult — but far less for a child.
“It can be just devastating to watch a child in that state,” said Dr. Laurén Murphy, an emergency physician and medical toxicologist at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. The city’s poison control center said cases involving young children had become “almost a daily occurrence,” including some who had breathing problems or fell into a coma.

You should see what legalizing alcohol did and it’s way more deadly.. progressives always know whats best for the government educated retards.
Al Capone here. I know what making alcohol illegal did.
Wow! Government set the price and/or tax too high allowing the black market to thrive. Shocking that!
Trigger warning: the following is advanced logic. Maybe we should consider trade-offs.
We have an obesity epidemic that affects far more people, including children, than the number of children who get their hands on gummies left out by irresponsible parents. Outlaw donuts, sausages, ice cream and potato chips?
Here’s a photo of all the adults who ever overdosed on marijuana–> <–
"Play faster. Faster!"
Price and tax are non existent when alcohol is illegal. You have heard of prohibition, right?
Did Al Capone and company just give the booze away? One reason the illegal market in pot thrives is because the tax on legal pot.
How many people, even children, have overdosed to death on pot? (That’s a rhetorical question.)
How many tens of thousands of people die in car accidents each year, including children? It involves trade-offs.
I would like to think people on a conservative website would appreciate that government frequently screws things up….
How can a parent or guardian of a child be alert to child safety if they are stoned?
Lemme say this. I purchased cannabis cookies from a local dispensary hoping it will take the edge off my senior citizen body pain from past injuries, orthopedic surgeries and aging, I tried the oxys and other opioids and that cure is worse than the pain for pain management. I would only take an opioid now post surgery and stop when the surgery site is healed. One cookie is enough to numb the pain sufficiently enough and I don’t eat one every day.
It’s a no brainer that I am an experienced adult and work out and have a strong mind, strong enough to cold turkey prescribed opioid when the pain of surgery has subsided.
But a child? I am assuming this is elementary school aged children?
If the parent or guardian of a child that gets into their parent’s “stash” or guardian’s or even visiting their grandparents and damn near OD’s. that adult should be arrested and brought to justice then these things will stop happening.
Adults with minor children will lock up their stash as they do their firearms.
I have always oppose legalizing drugs In fact I can still remember the old anti Drug ads WHY DO YOU THINK THEY CALL IT DOPE?
I saw this story on the TV news. Marijuana is not poisonous. Any story written by the New York Times should be considered a pack of lies. It’s not like the Times corroborates this article in any way.
Sorry, cannabis is permitted in Genesis 1:29, but I’m sure you won’t take the same stance with pharmaceuticals… no no, we need those, right? ridiculous.
Genesis:129 refers to plants for food, not for getting stoned.
Genesis 1:29
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
King James Version (KJV)
It could be debated that you don’t really eat herbs…and please let’s not smoke but let’s use the essential oils like they used to annoint with?
For context.. The problems are 1. Yes the body is a temple don’t smoke. 2. They don’t ever free the seed like a pack of tomato seeds from Ferry-Morris. They have to control it and make all that money! 3. This is old folks medicine from God.. I have found that it helps my osteoarthritis for pain and mobility. It helps old dogs that once couldn’t get up the stairs anyymore…and by God the dogs are not smoking it!!!!! Do kids need it? Hades no! 21 and up like aunt bettys cupboard.
Gob Bless Us All!
