The only consistent thing about the seat of the federal government is that it’s never been able to run its own affairs. Whether it was brewing with ex-Confederates after the Civil War or outright criminals like former Mayor Marion Barry in more contemporary times, the ‘District’ is an extended catastrophe, a giant conceptual mistake that perhaps should never have been and would never have been if a mob of Philly veterans hadn’t attacked Congress and if keeping the nation’s capital in New York didn’t seem like an excessive power shift to a state with already too much power, and subject to a financial trade between Jefferson and Hamilton. In short, D.C. was a mistake. It’s impossible to navigate, govern or live in (and without air conditioning was impossible to live in during the summer.)
Trying to give D.C. a city government and an ability to run its affairs was a disaster even before Mayor Bowser decided to throw in with a mob of rioters back in 2020. Having Congress assume its traditional responsibility for the District would be helpful, but the larger issue, especially as Dems remain obsessed with granting statehood to D.C. and adding two Senate seats (if you think they’re not serious about that, think again) is who should govern much of the city.
And the answer is Maryland. What makes the most sense and always has is to return much of the city to Maryland (and the folks with the No Taxation license plates can start paying taxes to Maryland) and retain key federal areas for security purposes. Will that be ideal? No. But short of moving the capital out of D.C. (and there are good arguments for it), it’s the most feasible outcome.
Still just imagine how many swamp creatures would remain in the nation’s capital if the center of government moved to Montana.

Here in Montana, we have enough swamp creatures in Helena. We don’t need anymore. We already have enough loony Democrats in Missoula, Butte, Bozeman and Billings. Flying Pride flags as the county flag is enough.
Reuniting with Maryland is absolutely the right and best solution. The original portion of DC in Virginia was given back to Virginia in 1846, the Pentagon is there, no problem, so the remaining portion that is the current DC can likewise go back to Maryland.
Democrats are holding the people of DC hostage with their demand for statehood. There is no political leadership advocating DC-Maryland reunion, but Republicans (and Trump) could seize the initiative by passing a Congressional Joint Resolution promoting reunion. DC has just the right population number to be a Congressional district. That’s the Republican concession to Democrats. This solution gives DC residents full voting rights, like the citizens of all the other states. What does the result of such a Joint Resolution, signed by the President look like? Republicans show they are for voting rights, Democrats show they oppose voting rights.
Why would you inflict that on Montanans?
May I suggest a point some 60 miles west of Catalina.
DC Home Rule was a scam from the beginning, to get political advantages for the Democrats.
And there are plenty of no-go zones there because of the usual suspects.
The answer is direct federal rule. You can’t have the states able to hold the federal government hostage any more than you can have one political faction do it. The founders were right to establish a federal district.
Yes, a district, not a City. Bowser and the Capitol Police have got to go.
Best idea, remove the statehood issue once and for all by returning the district to Maryland.
The District was run much better when the Corps of Engineers was in charge, before Home Rule. We should go back to that. (I am a resident).
There is LOTS of empty land in NV. Just sayin…
I SEE TROUBLE WITH MARYLAND, HOME OF THE CIA.
The District of Corruption also has the highest per Capita crime rate in the country.
The federal government has seized control of the city before and should do so again. Stop talking about it President Trump and do it.
