I think that we need to see our fear of giving offence as being itself a spiritual issue. The powers of darkness deal in intimidation. Paul, writing to Timothy who was based in Ephesus, the home of the pagan Diana cult, said “For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and love, and self-control” (2 Timothy 1:7). So if it isn’t from God and doesn’t have the righteousness which is claimed for it (and note that Jesus did not hesitate to say things that “triggered” people), what is its origin?
