Are you smarter than a 5th grader? Probably not if you’re a University of California San Diego college student.
As I discuss in an upcoming FPM+ Article, college students are routinely taking remedial classes in basic literacy and mathematics. At the University of California San Diego, 1,000 incoming students needed to take remedial math courses. In a remedial class, 1 in 4 could not correctly answer the following math problem.

If you can answer this question, you’re uh overqualified for college.
How bad is it? The dismantling of standards at the high school level was followed by the dismantling of standards at the college level and the result is that no one knows anything.
One in eight UC San Diego freshmen have math skills that fall below high-school level, a 30-fold increase since 2020. One in 12 have math skills below middle-school levels. Yet the average high-school math GPA was an A- for students taking a middle-school remedial course. This suggests rampant grade inflation in high schools. Its effects were exacerbated by the UC Board of Regents move in May 2020 to stop requiring the SAT in the name of making admissions more equitable and improving “educational quality.”
Oh they did. By their standards. The freshmen may not be able to count without using their fingers, or more likely, ChatGPT, but I bet they can correctly identify
1. Systemic racism
2. Fat-shaming
3. Slut-shaming
4. Sexism
5. Genocide in Gaza
6. Islamophobia
And their classes in podcasting (not joking), toxic masculinity (not joking either) and social media branding (see above) have more than prepared them for their emerging careers as podcasters and social media influencers. Or running their accounts.
Declining student preparation appears widespread at the state’s universities: About half of UC campus math chairs say that the “number of first-year students that are unable to start in college-level precalculus”—which used to be a standard course for California’s top high school sophomores—doubled over the last five years. The other half of chairs said the number tripled.
But who’s counting anyway? Not UC San Diego students.

Why quibble about math? When in power, the enumerate do not need math to redistribute what others produce and own. They may not know what 100% means, but they know what all of it is.
To engineers everything looks like an engineering problem. That carries over to the field of social engineering to which many academics and politicians eventually find their way.
In 1960 American High School students, undergraduates, and graduates scored 100, 108 and 114 respectively on IQ tests. As of 2006 that had fallen to 93, 100 and 106 respectively. Bear in mind these are averaged out across all subjects from STEM to Mickey Mouse and denote the peak and not the lower edge of the Bell Curve, certainly the dumbest lower edge of the Bell Curve of the dumbest courses. Also take note, no figures have been released since 2006. It’s almost as they have something to hide!

The damage has already been done. The public schools have been flooding America with uneducated. young adults for a long time. Not sure if a nation can recover from something like this. In the meantime, in China, for instance , they insist on excellence in school. Students learn Algebra as a concept starting in Kindergarten., are doing pre-calculus in 7th 8th grade to prep them for Calculus in High school. We are doomed….

In defense of Jeff, the box isn’t a generally recognized math symbol and may not be standard at all. This could be the fault of the graphic artist who created the image for the article. And as best as I can recall, no box symbol was ever part of the “New Math” of the sixties. Perhaps someone familiar with computer programming might recognize it as an instruction symbol in some computer command. (Then again, it may just be a box for reasons unexplained.)

I initially thought the straight lines used for the box were signaling some sort of cisgender supremacism. I think there is a PhD topic in Intersectionality Studies lurking here. Anyone care to write a grant proposal?
Furthermore, the right angles used were not only very reminiscent of ungroovy squares, but a second layer of latent racism since they suggest the idea that there is a right answer. I am ambivalent about the ambiguous use of a rectangle. On the one hand, being less boringly symmetric than a square, it is therefore groovier than a square, despite no actual further grooves (wild paradox, man), but on the other hand I still hate nontrivial (symmetry) groups. Moreover, etymologically, rect comes from the Latin for right, or straight, so that back we go to that cisgender supremacism. (Don’t go the path of the rectum connection, please.)
Also, the use of an equality sign rather than an equity sign is a violation of People Whose Lives Matter rights. At least it wasn’t an inequality sign. My gosh, if that had appeared in the question, the SPLC would have had to bring suit to shut down UCSD. (Although, come to think of it, that last prospect does have its upside.)
But I think most importantly there may also be an opportunity here for a new cult for those of us whose right frontal lobes and left frontal lobes see each side of the non-actually-existent equation independently. Shaming used to be a way of forcing universally-accepted values on people. All citizens in a country should hold the same values and traditions, like morals, ethics, patriotism, and respecting positions of authority. The average Black IQ in America is only about 85 or less, where the average of America is only 100. Our military will not take in recruits who have an IQ of less than about 83 or so. I just finished “Unbalanced: Memoir of an Immigrant Math Teacher” by Yellow Heights. It is another indictment of our absurdly inefficient, government-dominated education system. When you compare the SAT/ACT scores of students who major in education to the subsequent high GPAs those students get, and then do the same for those in STEM majors, we understand grades are to woke educators what prices are to socialists: irrelevant.
I’ve been told that into today’s college environment, my high school diploma would be the equivalent of a bachelors degree in general education.
The modern bachelor’s degree is more like equivalent to your middle school level.
Some might think that it would be roughly equivalent to saying that your high school diploma would be equivalent to a master’s degree, but I’m pretty sure that they would be wrong. Actually the average master’s degrees may be equivalent to your elementary school credential. And that is all too much depressing equivalence.
If the above was unnecessarily confusing, maybe it would help to recall that, as Dennis Prager has pointed out, college makes you stupider. After that it gets Piled Higher and Deeper (PhD).
Math is based on absolute truth. Communism is based on absolute lies. Communist death democrats control the public school systems and the Universities and the truth is the deadly enemy of communism therefore only lies are taught in these schools. Islam by the way operates under the same dogma as Communism. Here’s an equation that should be taught in our schools – Communism + Islam = Evil. After I turned 50 I moved from being a consulting engineer/physicist to being a college instructor. I also became a father for the first time at age 56, and again at 59, and a college trustee at age 58; so I’ve had an unusual look at what goes on in education especially math education from three sides.
Something that was puzzling until I did a bit of investigation was that students who’d taken two years worth of calculus in high school were arriving in college with dismal skills. When they took a math placement exam most of them would place into elementary algebra, a ninth-grade class. How could this be when they’d progressed, supposedly, four or five classes beyond this level?
The answer to this was that high school teachers were much more interested in teaching calculus than that boring old algebra and they coaxed and pushed students into more advanced math before they’d mastered more foundational materials. In fact, many of the high school math teachers weren’t very skilled at algebra themselves and had no business teaching calculus. There was so little supervision and assessment that no one recognized the disconnect and heaven forbid the public school provide any accountability.
Over a few years I learned the same story applied to teaching high school science, especially physics. Teachers poorly prepared in physics themselves were teaching students a hodge-podge of topics that were sort of fun but nowhere near what we expected these students to have mastered for entry into college engineering. Again, no supervision or assessment against expectations and no accountability
Public education is like mass production on an assembly line without any QA/QC department to identify and correct problems. And just like such a malfunctioning assembly line, it represents an enormous waste of time and money as valuable raw materials (students) are turned into products (graduates) no one wants to buy (employ).
In 2005 I was given an award by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and in my remarks I said that much of the service economy could stand to learn how precision manufacturing works and employ similar thinking. Nowhere is this more true than in the K-16 pipeline.

that before an improvement in standard operating procedures can be made to an organization
whoever does not like the outcome or results
must force whoever runs the organization
to take responsibility for the poor performance
and be replaced by someone willing to improve performance.
And the goals and objectives of the organization must align with whatever is defined as “improvement.”
