Let’s call it what it is: not anti-imperialism but dressed-up anti-Americanism. It’s more Trump Derangement Syndrome from an elite that can’t let go of how much it immensely hates the most consequential U.S. President of modern times.
The media establishment’s reaction to the US-Israel combat operation in Iran has been marked less by measured analysis than by a strain of historical amnesia and rhetorical excess. One might conclude, from the tone of much coverage, that this is an unprecedented and uniquely reckless intervention, rather than an episode that fits within a long and complex tradition of geopolitical conflict and Iranian aggression, hastened by legacy hatred of both the United States and Israel. Such commentary appears driven more by sentiment than by a sober assessment of precedent or strategy.
Trump Derangement Syndrome, clinically, may look a lot like anxiety or OCD: people have constant intrusive thoughts, struggle to control their emotions, and it starts to affect their daily lives. They report sleepless nights, endlessly checking the news, and feeling restless or on edge. Many say they can’t stop thinking about Donald Trump — even when they want to.
You could call it “obsessive political preoccupation” — basically, when a political figure becomes the center of someone’s thoughts, triggering stress and a constant urge to keep checking for updates — and it also means that it becomes so pervasive that questions about abhorrent behavior from terroristic regimes like Iran become secondary.
It is also worth questioning the prevailing narrative of failure from these elite Trump haters. Reports suggest that significant elements of the Iranian regime’s infrastructure have been degraded, including weapons installations and nuclear facilities, and that senior figures have been removed. Against this backdrop, early claims of a decisive “strategic defeat” for the United States seem at least as premature as assertions of swift victory.
More disquieting, however, is the reaction among certain constituencies in the West. Public demonstrations sympathetic to the Iranian regime, alongside commentary that appears to welcome setbacks for the United States — and Trump personally — point to a broader ideological shift. What is often presented as anti-imperialism can, at times, resemble a more generalized skepticism — if not outright hostility — towards Western power and values.
This raises an uncomfortable question: whether opposition to particular interventions has, in some quarters, become entangled with a willingness to see illiberal regimes (especially Islamist ones) prevail, provided it entails a diminution of American influence and as long as Trump himself loses. Few would dispute that the conflict should ideally be brought to a close as swiftly as possible. But the terms on which it ends — and the principles implicitly endorsed in the process — remain of considerable consequence.
By throwing shade and scorn at Trump and the combat operation that the US and Israel seek to achieve in Iran, these very critics provide oxygen and succor to an Islamist political order in Iran that never did, and still does not, aspire to embrace the benefits of modernity; rather on the contrary, it remains implacably hostile to any semblance of cultural modernity, democracy and hope of embracing liberal values, while still remaining extremely skeptical of, if not outright hostile to, the mere concept and idea of the nation state.
And then there’s the fact that these same western elite, Trump-hating technocrats have nothing to say about the mullahs’ barbaric repression of their own people, nor about their violent anti-Semitism. These arrogant critics have seemingly forgotten that Iran’s bosses, new and old, hold the repugnant view that Jews are a force for Satanic evil, which must be purged from the world.
And instead of pouring scorn on this manifest aversion to modernity, hostility to democracy, cynicism towards the nation state, and intolerance towards alternative views — these critics would prefer to call out Donald Trump personally, focusing on a few hundred dollars a year extra at gas pumps instead of eliminating a pernicious, existential threat. Priorities, priorities.

World consumption of oil is about 105 million BPD. Multiply that by 2 months = 6.3 billion barrels.
